Haida Gwaii Eyes…Wide Open
Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges by Shellene Van der Beke
Ever a Challenge: Building a Better BC June 29th, 2017: two women, the Queen’s representative, Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon and Premier of British Columbia, Christy Clark, met and decided the political future of BC. BC Legislative Chambers in 1921 | Wikimedia Commons
The result: for the first time in Canada since 1926, the request of the elected government was denied. Proactive Solutions: What’s next?
The BC NDP/ BC Green minority government is formed: Once premier-designate John Horgan is sworn in, for the first time in 16 years, the government will be led by the NDP. Although not a coalition, the Green Party has agreed to support the NDP in running the BC government together. Optimism reigns for possible progress on issues such as electoral reform, a different approach to BC Ferries, protecting our environment and fair economics.
Getting things done: With the NDP having to select someone from their party to be the next Speaker, this will mean every single vote in the legislature may be 43/43 (the NDP/Green have 44 minus 1 person as the Speaker=43 which equals the same number of Liberal MLAs). More than any time in history, the question is, can our political representatives work together for positive change? The next point will play a BIG role in this. The importance of our participation: Haida Gwaii has only had a Member of the Legislature on the side of the government in power for 16.5 of the last 45 years. We here at Haida Gwaii Trader urge every single one of our readers to write our North Coast MLA, Jennifer Rice, to share their ideas on how BC can be better, and if you wish, send us a copy too. We’d love to read about the dreams and hopes of our neighbours here on Haida Gwaii. Gratitude is Good Medicine What are you grateful for? “Are you kidding me? I’m stressed at work, the kids are sick again, and our cat just died!” Agreed, that’s all tough, but in the midst of all those challenges, is there one thing you feel grateful for? “Well, at least the sun is shining today.” Feel the difference that one positive statement makes? The act of searching for one or two things you are grateful for, and then expressing that gratitude, can change your brain chemistry in a similar way that antidepressant medications do. Gratitude also increases our immunity, lowers blood pressure, and increases our feelings of joy, optimism and social connection. Gratitude is good medicine! To be grateful doesn’t mean we deny reality or sugar coat past traumatic events. But it does help us remember to look at our lives with a different lens where we can start to see opportunities and growth that come with loss and pain. To learn from a past difficult situation, ask yourself: What lessons did this experience teach me? What ability did the experience draw out of me that surprised me? How am I now more the person I want to be because of it? Has the experience removed an inner barrier so that I now can feel grateful?
To be grateful is a choice, albeit a hard one, to make when things are really stressful or painful. It helps us take the larger life perspective instead of only zooming in on what is going so badly.
When times are good, it’s easy to take people and circumstances in our life for granted. When things go wrong, we feel powerless and vulnerable. That’s when we might choose to feel grateful for what we had, and still have. In fact, it is essential for coping. Gratitude is an energizer, it brings hope and has the power to heal. There are three ways to grow gratitude. First, write three to five things each day or week for which you are grateful; little or big things that might include seeing a rainbow, getting a compliment, or your car not needing a new transmission after all. Secondly, write a gratitude letter to an important person in your life whom you have never properly thanked. If you can, deliver that letter in person. Both of you will feel a surge of well-being and increased connectedness and possibly a desire to pay the kindness forward. Thirdly, say thank you when ever you can. Gratitude also helps us realize it’s not all about us; that the positive events in our lives often come from the actions of others. It can be humbling to remember we need each other and that we are all inter-connected.

Great Eats
at the OV! By Yvonne Smith
One of my favourite places to eat has always been the Ocean View Restaurant and Pizzeria in Queen Charlotte, now at their new location overlooking the QC Harbour. The food and the view are worth checking out. Recently, I had the pleasure of being invited to a fun food tasting event that the OV hosted which featured dishes created by their new Chef, Joshua Higgins. Chef Higgins served up seven dishes, one at a time, and we were asked to rate them on a scale of 1 to 10 in addition to providing our thoughts and comments on each dish. The dishes included Curried Chicken Flatbread, Reduced Balsamic Spinach and Feta Flatbread, Seared Salmon (or Halibut) over Cold Roasted Gratin with Barbecued Corn and Broccoli, Prawn Sunomono Salad, and my favourite, Chicken Francese. Prior to moving to Haida Gwaii, Chef Higgins lived in Victoria where he worked at a restaurant called “10 Acres”. Before that he told me he followed a girl to France and got a job there on a food truck! This is where he developed an interest in cooking French and Italian foods. He then came to Haida Gwaii, on request from a friend, Jason Hovde, the General Manager of the Ocean View Restaurant, and he hopes to incorporate more seafood and locally harvested food into the menu. This includes fresh caught salmon, halibut, crabs and his favorite - mussels and clams. The tasting winners, which can now be ordered from the Ocean View’s menu, are the Balsamic and Feta Flat Bread and the Seared Salmon or Halibut dishes. Happy dining to all!

By Pete Moore
June 25th was the first ever Gwaii Haanas BioBlitz, a full day of outdoor exploring, learning, and most of all, FUN! The event was one of many BioBlitz’s that Parks Canada has held across the country this year. Over the day, there was an estimated 165+ people that attended! The morning kicked off with a Beach Blitz at 2nd Beach in Skidegate, just in front of the Haida Heritage Centre. There, participants got to explore the evervast world of the Haida Gwaii intertidal zone. Various local experts engaged the group in an array of activities, including trying different kelps, saying a prayer to the ancestors, and taking samples inside to check out under microscopes. After a quick lunch, the group moved over to the Spirit Lake Trail to follow guided tours with experts such as Linda Tollas, Stu Crawford, Sean Young, Kiku Dhanwant, and Aline Lachapelle. These tours included identifying some of Haida Gwaii’s foliage and what is edible, talking about the history of the forests, and explaining the evolution of the landscape. If you couldn’t make it, check out Gwaii Haanas’ other programming they have on this summer at the Haida Heritage Centre. Orientation sessions are held 9am Monday to Saturday from July 1 - August 12.

A WALK THROUGH 1000 YEARS
OF HISTORY Story by Pete Moore After a quick phone call to confirm, I begin packing my bag in preparation for a day out in the bush. June hasn’t been a particularly friendly month weather-wise, so I am sure to pack a rain jacket and some rain pants. But the next day, as morning comes, it’s what seems to be the first nice day in weeks; the rain gear won’t be necessary. At Queen B’s I’m met by Dale Lore, my guide for the day. Up until this point, the parameters of the adventure we are about to embark on have been somewhat ambivalent. But if you know Dale, you’ll understand that when he called me up to say “I have a story for ya,” I couldn’t resist the offer. Dale Lore has lived on Haida Gwaii for over 30 years, and served for many years as Counsellor and then Mayor of Port Clements. During that time, Dale made a historic move in siding with the Haida Nation over logging disputes on the islands. In recent years, however, Dale has begun doing tours for visitors, taking them out to see remnants of the many walks of life that have history on Haida Gwaii, from animal and plant, to Haida, to pioneer and industrial. After a quick stop at Bayview Market to pick up some sandwiches, we make our way down the rest of the paved road until we hit dirt. We are absolutely flying down the back roads, and Dale is doing so with a command that leaves me confident he could avoid the potholes with his eyes closed. Dale spent 20 years helping to build the back roads around Port Clements, and as a result his knowledge of the roads is encyclopedic. 10
We come to the end of the road and he instructs me to walk about 50 yards in said direction, but not without some forewarning: “There will come a point where you will most certainly get a chill down your back,” he says. “When I come in, I’ll ask you why you think that is.” I pace forward, and as I near the 50 yard point, I turn a corner: a shiver rockets its way down my entire body.
There’s no cell service for about an hour in all four directions. No Google Maps out here, just Dale. The first stop we take on the tour is one that Dale has been building up to the whole drive. To make a point, however, he lets me walk right past it, just to illustrate how easy it is to miss these things. It’s a culturally modified tree (CMT), which always have stories to tell. This one has a large, rectangular patch of bark removed, which was likely used for a blanket. At the base of the tree is a small hole, evidence that it was used for holding trap lines in later years. But that is not all the tree has to tell, for the other side of the tree is covered in deep scratches and the bark is worn away. The tree has been used by many beings over the years. We continue down a path and come up to an old logging camp near the water. The moss-coated, wooden frame that barely still supports the collapsing roof is a declining reminder of an economy and a way of life that is shifting. Like old ruins, the infrastructure of the past speaks for itself and tells its own story.
There, hidden under a blanket of thick moss, is a nearly finished canoe. The way it presents itself along this trail is indescribable. After a moment, Dale follows behind me and begins to define why you are guaranteed to feel a chill in the presence of this site. There are two main reasons: the first is that smallpox was brought to Haida Gwaii before the canoe could be finished. “They would not get this far on a canoe just to leave it behind,” explains Dale, elaborating that the canoe likely dates back to the 1860’s since the smallpox epidemic was around 1862. The second reason is much more pragmatic: the creek that runs parallel to the canoe carries cold air down with it, and so you are exposed to a sudden draft as you approach the site. “I like to tell people that if you don’t feel shivers, you don’t have a soul,” says Dale.
Again, we’re blasting down the roads. This time, Dale hangs a left down a path barely reminiscent of a road; we pause to fold in the side mirrors to protect them from the alder trees that crowd the roadside. At this point he tells me that he never buys new trucks, “I’m lucky if a truck lasts me 3 years before I absolutely wreck it,” he says.
The stage is now set for what we are walking among, and we continue onward to Dale’s next stop. We pull off to the side of the road, and try to find a decent entry point through the dense foliage that covers the sides of the road. After a tight slog through some thick salal and marshy underfoot, the landscape opens up and we are walking through a forest of skyscraping July 2017 11
cedar trees. It seems everywhere you turn there is another massive cedar towering above, and almost every time there is yew tree growing nearby. The Haida used yew for many of their tools, and would have used it to harvest cedar in various ways; its position near the large cedars is serendipitous. It isn’t long before we come across a site, this time another canoe, only in a less completed state. In these cases, you can tell what you are looking at is man-made in a few different ways, but the most obvious is to follow the tree back to the stump. If it’s a tree that’s been cut down, its a CMT. The area is decorated with different colours of flagging tape. The mountainside was proposed as both a potential logging area and mining area but was not used due to the unstable wet ground. The area was also surveyed by the Council of the Haida Nation. Although there are different colours of tape scattered around, one stands out among the rest: bright yellow with red polka dots. “That’s Captain Gold,” says Dale. CMTs are in every direction. Some test holes, some bark stripping, some fallen trees for canoes or poles. As we walk through this area, and I see the evidence of human activity all around me, I realize I am walking among a thousand years of history. In this mindset, I spot a new site along our descent. It’s very old, in a further-along state of decay compared to the other ones that we’ve looked at. The stump looks like it could have been cut, but looks different than others we’ve seen. Furthermore, a midsection of the log is missing. After some examination and discussion, we decide the best bet is to take some pictures and take them to Captain Gold.
Captain Gold, one of the island’s top knowledge holders, has surveyed all across the island (including the area we were in) as part of a volunteer archaeology program in the mid 70’s and 80’s. “I was just trying to get the history recorded,” he says to me as I am pulling up the pictures on my computer to show him. At the time, Haida Gwaii was being targeted for resource extraction, as per the aforementioned logging and mining proposals. It was up to the locals to prove that the Haida were more than just a coastal people – CMT’s and partially finished canoes on the top of a mountain, in the middle of the island, definitely help to prove this. “It’s just common sense,” says Captain Gold. He tells of accounts from early fur traders saying that the Haida’s were scared to go into the forest, yet they had longhouses made from massive cedars. When I show Captain Gold the pictures, he points out the missing midsection likely means the tree was used for a mortuary pole, which are shorter than house frontal poles. When adventuring, there’s a certain rush you get when you think to yourself that maybe no one else has ever stood in the exact spot that you’re standing in. You feel a sense of validation, like you are surmounting uncharted territory. After that day, however, that rush is pale in comparison to the rush you feel following in the footsteps of those before you. Weaving through the massive cedars, examining the carvings in the landscape, following game trails, spotting the flagging tape that jumps out as dots of unnatural colour, seeing the ruins of a recent past; all elements of a walk through history.

WHAT DO AGA T
ES
MEAN TO YOU
Submitted by April Dutheil and Abigail Mitchell from Crystal Cabin Did you know that Haida Gwaii is one of the few places in Canada where you can find agates right on the beach? Agate is a local stone of microcrystalline quartz with bands and translucent properties. These stones were formed over 62 million years ago during the islands’ volcanic past. While the geological origin of agates is known, for many, agates hold special stories connecting us to Haida Gwaii and each other. To further explore the story of agates, we reached out through social media to ask “What do agates mean to you?” Over 20 responses were received, with many stories shared in the 700+ member Facebook group, Beachcombing Haida Gwaii. Each story shared, from using agates as beautiful tributes, to memorializing a special moment or person, or even as weight to fill a fishing boat ballast - helps us to understand more, while we marvel and contemplate the meaning behind these magical stones. A former resident of Haida Gwaii shared how agates brought him to the islands, “Someone showed me a pamphlet on Haida Gwaii and their ‘agate strewn beaches’ - and that sealed my destiny. At one point, I tried to raise the cash (unsuccessfully) to buy a pretty little double-ender fishing boat - partly because the original owner had filled the hold with agates for ballast.” A local Haida weaver shared her connection to agates: “I like to collect the tiny, very clear ones and use them for my weaving. To me, the clear agates are sacred and represent purity.”
One visitor told us how agates helped her to keep the memory of Haida Gwaii alive, “Agates to me represent all of my memories and time spent on the beautiful serene beaches of Haida Gwaii. I’ve been to the islands six times and always bring some agates home.” Some told us that they still have the first agate they ever collected! Agate collecting has been remarked by many as a special way to create memories with families: “Agates bring our family together. We have friendly competitions to see who can find biggest, most beautiful, most red, orange, or blue, etc.” shared a local parent. With many hours spent on this local pastime, parents can rest assured that their children will inherit and carry-on the “agate-eye.” Agates are also believed to have metaphysical properties: “Agate’s grounding, calming and gentle energy embraced me as I walked my first beach in Haida Gwaii,” shared another. Even if you don’t feel a connection to this stone, it’s hard to dispute that the physical act of agate hunting is an unparalleled experience. You can spend many hours silently walking the beaches, eyes never leaving the ground, as you quietly collect these gifts from Mother Nature. You can learn more about the agates of Haida Gwaii in Crystal Cabin’s new pocket guide, “Agate Collecting with Dutes: Your Guide to Finding Agates on Haida Gwaii.” Want to learn more about Haida Gwaii’s geological story? You can attend Rock Talks at 11am every Friday at Crystal Cabin (info@crystalcabingallery.ca / 250-557-4383) in Tlell until August 25, 2017! July 2017 13

Haida Gwaii -
Islands of Light By Shellene Van der Beke
Since moving to Haida Gwaii eleven years ago, I have talked with many people that say a certain “something” has either drawn them here or kept them here. Whether they have lived here for many generations, only for a few years or are visiting for the first time, they commonly acknowledge that this area has an inarguable yet rather hard to nail down energy or “vibe”; something extraordinary.
With a job, a talented and handsome man, and an adventure presenting themselves all at the same time, I was in like Flynn. And so, Ben, his dog Scrappy and I sailed off to Haida Gwaii. No word of a lie - the name of Ben’s sailboat? Déjà Vu.
We arrived at this exact time of year in 2006 and…well, we never left. We have since married, purchased a house and Most everyone has met a person they swear they’ve known property and are proud to call these magical islands home. before. It’s also not uncommon for people to experience an My Grandmother, before meeting Ben, told me of her dream of uncanny sense of familiarity or lure for a specific place. Déjà a man, taller than me with blue eyes. She said she knew it vu? There is no denying that people, places or even things can was him the moment she saw him. often resonate with some sort of “energetic vibe”. Some make you feel good…others, not so much. Juju? Eleven years later, I was sorting through some family mementos and came upon an envelope with my My Experience with the Haida Gwaii Vibe name on it. Inside were various cards, letters and poems I had sent my dearly departed Many years ago, I worked at a wholesale grower of plants Grandmother and Grandfather ever since I native to the Pacific Northwest and I was offered the job to was a little girl. Among them was a neatly travel to Skidegate, Queen Charlotte Islands - now Haida Gwaii folded 1985 Kamloops newspaper clipping - to assist with a native plant installation at Skidegate’s newly dated November 14th. My birthday. The constructed Haida Heritage Centre. Even though I was born and clipping was a review of “South Pacific”, raised in BC, I hadn’t even heard of the Charlottes/Haida Gwaii a play I had performed in, and on the opposite side of the clipping was an before. article that made the hair stand up on my arms. The article’s title: Simultaneously, I met a dashing, blue-eyed sailor and woodcarver named Ben who, after studying Haida carver Bill “Haidas”. It was a report of the Lyell Island blockade. Over 30 Reid in college, yearned to sail to the mysterious islands that inspired Mr. Reid’s exquisite creations. Deciding to check off years after my Grandmother cut the clipping out. this item on his bucket list, Ben asked if I might join him on his exciting sailing trip. Destination: Haida Gwaii.

A Scientific Perspective of the Haida Gwaii Vibe Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Neil Blacklock, Doctor of Natural Medicine and Acupuncture. It turns out, Dr. Blacklock was also drawn to Haida Gwaii quite by chance. In a gift shop at an airport in Calgary, he happened to purchase and read the book “The Golden Spruce: A True Story of Myth, Madness and Greed” by John Vaillant. As an acupuncturist, Dr. Blacklock has always been interested in subtle energies that create and animate life at all levels. “The geometry of acupuncture is the geometry of light and the flow of this life force can be seen everywhere in nature,” Dr. Blacklock explains. “I had been researching the harmonic grids of the Earth [Earth Acupuncture or Geo-Meridian Theory] for a number of years and all this time, Haida Gwaii’s link to these grids had remained hidden.” That is, until about a year ago, when after reading “The Golden Spruce” his research unexpectedly changed direction and Haida Gwaii came clearly into his view. Since then, most of Dr. Blacklock’s available research time has centered on the sacred geometry of Haida Gwaii and last month, he and his wife Christine visited our magical island communities for the very first time. While here, Dr. Blacklock
appeared as a guest presenter at the Crystal Cabin’s “Tlell Stone Circle, 15th Year Celebration” and spoke about how Haida Gwaii resonates with the geometry of light. Geometry of light? I can feel my eyes squinting and my brow beginning to furrow. No doubt I look like a deer in the headlights. I ask Dr. Blacklock if he can explain it in simpler terms. “The geometry of light is like when you switch on a light bulb,” he explains. “We can see that light because the filaments or the gas in there is vibrating at a particular frequency. The geometry of that energy has a shape and a wavelength; a distance and a height. When you pluck a string on a guitar, it gives off a particular frequency that we can hear because it has a particular shape. If the string is tuned correctly, it will sound pure. It is pure because it is tuned to the correct note, frequency, shape and geometry. A perfectly tuned note will resonate beautifully and be very pleasant to hear and for many even feels wonderful. However, if the string is not tuned, the sound can be very unpleasant and can make a person flinch. This is exactly the same as the geometry of landscapes. Some places are so uniquely formed; they have a pure, harmonic resonance, which can be determined by the mapping of geometric formulas – this is the research I am doing.” For thousands of years, all around the world, people have been drawn to places that make them feel good. Places dotted July 2017 17
around the world, both natural and man-made. Many of which have been identified as sacred. Buildings built long ago or ruins of them such as England’s Stonehenge, Egypt’s Great Pyramid, and Saudi Arabia’s Mecca to name but a few. They are places of power and peace. Places that have been activated by the consciousness of people who revered them, respected them, listened to them and align with them. Places, as Dr. Blacklock’s research affirms, like Haida Gwaii.
Dr. Neil Blacklock
There is a wisdom resonating from the original people of the world; ancestors to us all. Like the people who have called Haida Gwaii their home for time immemorial, they did so by living in accordance with it. Taking directly from it their sustenance and, at the same time, giving back to the land the respect and care it needs to sustain itself. Renowned Mycologist Paul Stamets who, for decades, has studied the science of how plants thrive by working together, believes that the task that we face today is to understand the language of nature. “We need to have a paradigm shift in our consciousness,” affirms Stamets, “I believe nature is a force of good. Good is not only a concept, it is a spirit and so hopefully the spirit of goodness will survive.” When asked why it is important for us to know about sacred places, Dr. Blacklock responds, “Because they have the potential to help us at every level - the physical, mental, and spiritual - by raising the vibration of our consciousness and awareness.” As part of his field work, Dr. Blacklock hopes to visit Haida Gwaii again soon, and he wishes to extend an invitation to anyone who has a deeper understanding of the sacred nature of the history of the land of Haida Gwaii and its spiritual roots to contact him by email nblack333@gmail.com or phone 403678-1765.

Q. What is 8’ tall, 28’ long and has 14
stamps on it? A. An envelope on the south wall of the post office in Masset! This describes phase 1 of a mural project that I am painting for Canada Post. It uses existing stamps, from various dates, depicting some of the precious life of Haida Gwaii. Fortunately for me, there are many bird stamps to choose from! Sandhill crane, loons, peregrine falcon, Leach’s storm-petrel, raven, great blue heron, and in phase 2, northern goshawk, belted kingfisher, and Canadian geese. Part of the scene includes animals and fish also: harbour porpoise, sea otter, orca, and pacific halibut. Great painting pleasure was had working on the Bill Reid stamps of “Peace on Earth / xiid llageegahl dlaayadaa” and “Spirit of Haida Gwaii”, along with Emily Carr’s “Big Raven”. A simplified boat design, assembled from aspects of local marine craft, is “printed” on the envelope. 2’ diameter date stamps punctuate the collage with the date set at 2017-07-01, Canada Day. Using a play on words to provide a humorous touch, the sender is a Mr. Al Batross who addresses his letter to a Ms. Sal Monroe.
As an art piece it playfully borrows from Pop Art by taking every day common forms and cultural artifacts and transforms them with paint. But, rather than making comment on the ugliness and futility of our post-millennium culture, the intent here is to showcase and highlight the natural beauty, importance of meaningful communication, and the necessity of our shared oneness. Andy Warhol’s Marilyn is Emily Carr’s raven, Lichtenstein’s frame from a comic is an awesome orca, and Balloon Rabbit by Jeff Koons is the bronze canoe full of fantastic creatures. By increasing the size of an object like a stamp to 3’ x 4’, our perception can shift. Close up we have abstracted colour fields and shapes, and then, from across the street, the postage stamp size forms again. In life we can use the gifts that contemplating artworks give us as a substance and dependency free, nonaddictive way of shifting our world view. Like the electric car bumper sticker of recent times says…”Shift Happens”.

OUR YOUTH BOARD IS AWESOME!
One of the unique features of the Gwaii Trust is our Youth Board. We established this board in 2011 to give young people living on Haida Gwaii a bigger say about the programs that affect them, and to give them the opportunity to take on leadership roles. We also had an eye on the future - we believe that giving local young people experience on a board increases the possibility they will end up serving as Gwaii Trust directors down the road, or serving their communities in other ways.
The Youth Board mirrors our regular board, with eight directors and eight alternates representing the communities of Haida Gwaii, all between the ages of 13 and 21. They meet throughout the year to make decisions on applications for youth grants, talk about issues facing young people on Haida Gwaii, and come up with new ideas. Each year, they award approximately $100,000 worth of grants for educational and/or recreational projects aimed at youth. The Youth Board

is interested in funding projects that build relationships, support opportunities for youth in sports, culture, arts and outdoor activities, reduce barriers to participation, and promote youth leadership, and they are especially interested in applications from young people themselves. In addition to our regular Youth Grants, our 30 Under 30 program provides $30,000 a year (up to $5,000 per community) for projects spearheaded by islanders under the age of 30.
INTERESTED? Some of these directors are graduating this year and moving on to post-secondary studies, which means we are now looking for new directors to take their places - specifically for Graham Island South, Moresby Island, CHN Massett and CHN Skidegate. If you’re interested in this opportunity, check our website, contact your local director, or call our office for more information about how to apply!

Meet Sheila Gordon of
Sheila’s Sugar Shack in Queen Charlotte
Sheila is a professionally-trained cake baker. She started decorating at the tender age of 11 years old. Her mother was a chef and decorator and she took Sheila under her wing and taught her everything she knew. Cake-making for Sheila is just art that involves food instead of canvas, paints or clay. She originally began making cakes for fun and for close friends and relatives. But as word spread she was getting requests from all kinds of people, and her business just naturally evolved from there. Sheila shares that ‘in my arsenal of equipment there is an edible image printer perfect for adding company logos, and personal photos to your cake’. She adds that she loves making custom cakes that reflect the personality of the person it is for. Choose your flavours, colours and accessories. Whatever your theme, Sheila will impress you and your guests with cakes and cupcakes designed just for the guest of honour. You can view more of Sheila’s past designs on the Sheila’s Sugar Shack Facebook page. Sheila’s Sugar Shack is open from Wed-Sat and has a minimum order of $100. Sheila often has bookings 1-2 weeks in advance (or more) so you’ll want to plan with her for your wedding, birthday or business celebrations well in advance. Exciting Solar Announcement!
Solar: A Bright Future, works to reduce the camps’ environmental footprint, showing youth and local communities that we can be environmental stewards and positively shape our energy future. The solar installations demonstrate Haida Gwaii’s commitment to work towards a renewable and environmentally sustainable future. It is a symbolic shift marking a transition away from fossil-fuel power towards small-scale, local clean energy. The solar project offers an example that renewable energy is possible on Haida Gwaii.
Swiilawiid Sustainability Society (“Swiilawiid”) is thrilled to announce Solar: A Bright Future, a series of solar installations to take place on Haida Gwaii this summer. Swiilawiid will work with the ReDiscovery Haida Gwaii Program, Swan Bay Rediscovery Program, and Mount Moresby Adventure Camp to install solar panels at their remote youth summer camps.
Youth who attend the camp will have the opportunity to learn about solar power and see first-hand that small-scale clean energy is possible. Solar: A Bright Future is an opportunity for local people to learn more about energy systems on Haida Gwaii and it embraces the leadership and initiative in the transition to renewable energy. With support from:
We’re so excited to be putting up solar panels at our camp this year! Being off-grid, this will be a great opportunity to teach our youth about energy. We’re so used to walking into a room, flicking on a switch and having light. We’re totally unaware of where our electricity comes from. – Rosemary Hart, Steering Committee Member, Haida Gwaii Rediscovery - rediscoveryhg.com Swan Bay Rediscovery is dedicated to helping young people learn about the Haida stewardship laws that are founded in the cultural concept of yah’guudang (respect for all things and all things are connected and depend upon each other). This requires caring for the land and sea and not wasting. The solar panels will provide an opportunity to add renewable energy curriculum to our sessions. – April Churchill, Manager, Swan Bay Rediscovery - swanbayrediscovery.ca As an off-grid facility, Mount Moresby desires to minimize its impact on the environment through reducing diesel consumption for its lights and food systems. – Geoff Horner, Associate Coordinator, Mount Moresby Adventure Camp - mountmoresbyadventurecamp.ca This project is really meaningful to me. I went to Haida Gwaii Rediscovery when I was a teenager and it was so transformative. We are so excited to be helping foster the next generation of environmental leaders. – Valine Crist, Project Coordinator, Swiilawiid Sustainabilty Society – swiilawiid.org

Totems in the Forest
Examing the past and present of totem poles at Hiellen By Pete Moore
June 21st, the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and National Aboriginal Day, was celebrated in monumental fashion at the Hiellen village site this year. The Solstice Pole, carved by master carver Christian White and eight apprentices was raised as the first pole erected in the area in nearly 200 years. At an astonishing 51 feet, the pole stands above the trees that surround it, and is the tallest pole on Haida Gwaii. As the first pole to be raised in the area in a long time, it harkens back to the history before it, and is modeled after a prior totem that stood in the forest. The pole on the left was raised in 1820 on the east side of the Hiellen River (same as the Solstice Pole), and stood until about 1920. Comparing the two, you can spot a number of similarities in the design, including some repeated figures and crests (especially near the mid section on each). Althought White’s pole is based on a pole of the past, it has plenty of its own unique elements a intricacies. The monumental pole commands an impressive stature amidst the trees that surround it. Horoscopes for July, 2017
Aries (March 20-April 19) Even though, dearest Aries, you might feel like a bit of a homebody this month, take care to thoroughly enjoy what you are doing. Work in the garden, paint the shed or develop a new recipe and cook it for your family and friends. Creativity is the key to your happiness this month. Key Words: Imagination, Inspiration, Inventiveness Taurus (April 19-May 20) What unique passions await you once you get quiet enough to hear them? Summer is typically a time of increased activity, but for you dearest Taurus, this month asks you to slow down just a bit and smell the roses. This allows you the opportunity to see the path ahead, clearly and distinctly. Key Words: Internal, At Ease, Balance
Gemini (May 20-June 21) Although you are the royalty of multitasking, I’m going to ask you to do it with the deepest intentions this month, dearest Gemini. Think passionately about what you are trying to accomplish, and then go for it. Flailing about without knowing your purposeful path only wastes energy that could be focused and directed precisely to your intended target. Hit your bull’s eye! Key Words: Aim, Spotlight, Unwind Cancer (June 21-July 22) Your past is coming to highlight the balance between home and family and career pursuits. What is so important to you, dearest Cancer, that you cannot stop thinking about it? And what people can help you realize this dream? It’s important to allow your confidants to help you when you need it and not try to do 100% of it yourself. Key Words: Initiative, Dynamic, Spunk
Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) You might feel like you are going it alone, this month dearest Leo. But know that you have emotional support whenever you need it. It’s the month of endings followed by surprising beginnings. Don’t despair. You have a chance to create and expand on something that is bigger and brighter then you could even have imagined. Be okay not knowing what that is and just embrace where you are now. Stay thankful. Key Words: Oneness, Individuality, Expansive Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Let the harvest begin. It’s time to realize, dearest Virgo, that what you are currently dealing with is the accumulation of the energy you have put into your past experiences and relationships. If everything feels easy and free, then replant those same seeds for a future harvest. If not, re-evaluate the direction to go, and you will reshape your life for the future. Key Words: Unfolding, Gather, Destination
Monica Caulfield is a professional astrologer and has been since 2007. She is passionate about helpingclients develop the tools of awareness and purpose in life. For further information, check out monica@healingforlifeastrology.com
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Wow, talk about expansive and motivating energy this month, dearest Libra. For someone who can be indecisive, this is not the month for that. You are shining brightly out in the public eye and you have a lot of brilliant ideas and opinions. Take this power and use it for your good and the good of others. Your vitality may feel like it’s at an all time high. Enjoy it for what it is. Key Words: Intensity, Ambition, Pizzazz
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) If possible, dearest Scorpio, try and find the time and resources to step outside your box. Discover other cultural experiences; be it the new Vietnamese restaurant down the street or travel to a different country. It’s important now to not get caught up in believing everything you think. Instead, stay open-minded to the possibility that you can still learn something surprising that you were not expecting to see or feel. Key Words: Realize, Understand, Visualize Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Sometimes, dearest Sagittarius, we are just now ready to see some issues that we have not had enough time to address or not been ready to look at. Now is that time for you. Although it is not always the easiest thing to do, it can be the greatest fulfilling experience as it frees you up for future beautiful times. Let yourself witness the healing within you that may occur this month, when you process a challenging issue. With your intention, replace it with a passionate purpose for your future. Key Words: Clean House, Fierceness, Strength
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) There is no way around the fact that this month you need advice and guidance from others. One of your archetypes, dearest Capricorn, is the hermit. You typically need the down time to recover and process in your life. But not this month. To flourish and evolve, this month it takes a village. It’s not weakness to ask for help, it’s actually strength. To know that you don’t have to go it alone will allow you to complete your daily missions. And we know you like to do that. Key Words: Compromise, Consideration, Agree Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Finding your “right” work is important now dearest Aquarius, whether you volunteer at a local shelter, have a high-powered job or mentor young people. As long as you feel that you are doing meaningful work, this is all that matters. It doesn’t have to be attached to your career but it can be. Just realize that if “right” work is something that you feel you are lacking, now is the perfect time to change it. Key Words: Relevant, Worthwhile, Useful Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) What feels right for you this month, dearest Pisces, is creating something from nothing. Maybe this looks like art, maybe it’s taking a new class, or maybe you’ve finally realized that your opinion matters and you are going to be who you are, without apologizing for it. Whatever direction this . takes, just know that now is your time to embrace the life you came here to live. Key Words: Humor, Ecstasy, Frolic

Seeking Cargo Service / Will Pay. Wanted - a ride for two wooden chairs - one a rocking chair - from Vancouver to Queen Charlotte. Would be happy to help pay expenses. Please email jkinegal@hotmail.com WANTED: Ride Share from Haida Gwaii to South West Coast. Hello! I’m posting this way in advance but I’m hoping to confirm a ride as soon as I possibly can! My name is Shaunna - me and my dog Benson and friend Kate are sailing up to Haida Gwaii in the beginning of July. I can unfortunately only stay for a short time on Haida Gwaii before I have to return back to my home on Salt Spring Island. I would like to avoid putting my dog on the ferry from PR to Port Hardy as much as I possibly can, and flights are quite expensive so I’m looking to catch a ride back down to the south-west coast. I’m looking to leave from Haida Gwaii sometime in the last week of July. I can help with driving as well as costs of gas. Benson and I are both great company. Please be in touch. Thank you! Call Shaunna at (778) 402-4687 or email inheryouth@hotmail.com Room for freight? I am looking for a truck returning from south coast with room for my food order.
