Indigenous Voices at the VIRL As part of our efforts to facilitate reconciliation, the Vancouver Island Regional Library will be working with selected Indigenous elders to share stories and skills, and facilitate discussions on culture, heritage, protocols, skills, history and Truth and Reconciliation. The Indigenous Voices initiative starts in January 2018 at 24 branches across our system. Here on Haida Gwaii, Jiixa (Gladys Vandal) will be working with the Queen Charlotte branch, and Gaamdaamaay Sgaalanglaay (Vernon Williams) will be working with the Masset branch. Gladys Vandal is a skilled cedar weaver from Skidegate. She has been weaving since 1994 and has studied under other notable weavers, including renowned Haida weaver Delores Churchill. Gladys gathers much of her yellow and red cedar bark from the forests near Skidegate. Her work has been exhibited throughout BC including at the Haida Gwaii Museum and the Turtle Island Gallery in Kelowna, as well as in art shows such as the All Islands Art Show, the BC Festival for the Arts, and as far away as Scottsdale, Arizona. She has received several Awards of Merit. Vern Williams is a member of the Haida raven clan from Gaaw (Old Massett). He is a song carrier, drum maker and rattle maker, among other skills. He runs ceremonies in his home community and all others on Haida Gwaii, and is always helping out in the schools and preschools, teaching songs to students. He shares stories of life and choices to help heal and move forward with strength. He is always learning more about Haida ways, and welcomes opportunities to share his healing knowledge and stories about how he has struggled and moved forward with strength and dignity. All residents in all communities on Haida Gwaii are invited to listen to and learn from Jiixa and Gaamdaamaay Sgaalanglaay. Check at your local library for more information about events associated with our Indigenous Voices initiative in the coming weeks. The VI Regional Library – Haida Gwaii is now on facebook! Looking Back, Looking Ahead A time for self-reflection by Liz Wouters
Although we made it past the shortest day of the year, the darkness still holds us close. Maybe there’s time now, post-holidays, to take a few moments of reflection on what you enjoyed and created last year. Self-reflection is helpful in order to take a personal inventory: to see where you are, and to celebrate your successes (this is important and we don’t do it enough). You can also decide what you want to keep in your life, create more of, and what you want to release. So, sit back (maybe with family or friends) and take a few moments to reflect on these questions below. You may want to write your answers in a journal for help with staying on track and for when you need a dose of inspiration in the coming year.
The last question may surprise you! What if there were no mistakes? That everything offers another opportunity for more learning and growth. Author Neil Gaiman reminds us to believe in the value of so-called mistakes. “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.” 9.
What is my imagination and heart excited about for the coming year, even though it may still be only a whisper, or seem totally crazy, or impossible in this moment?
10. For whom and what am I grateful?
1.
What did I accomplish in 2017 that I feel happy about?
2.
What risks did I take?
3.
What brought me the most joy and aliveness?
4.
What didn’t I achieve that I hoped to? What have I learned from this?
5.
Do I still want to achieve that goal or has that changed?
For this is truly where it starts, and from there, it’s a ripple effect.
6.
In either case, what do I need more of to make it happen: for example, information, training, change of perspective or support from others?
These questions were inspired by Barbara Richards, Master Coach and author of “Give Your Dream a Plan: 7 Questions to Ignite Extraordinary Results in Your Business”.
7.
What is one small step I can take to start making that goal a reality?
8.
What “mistakes” am I willing to make?
And now, for the last question, which may be the most important of all: 11. How can I consistently treat myself with love and
kindness in a way that I have not done so before?

Meet AlIson Watt, 2018 All Isl and Art Show A djudIcator This years’ adjudicator for the 2018 All Island Art Show is a painter who writes and writer who paints. “Writing has been a way to express more accurately what I am drawn to express in the non-verbal language of painting. Both are equally important to me”. Originally a biologist, she has worked on seabird colonies, in the Amazon, and in a botanical garden. She has also led ecotours in Honduras, the Galapagos, and (under sail), in the Pacific Northwest in the Gulf Islands, the Great Bear Rainforest, Haida Gwaii, and Alaska. “Biologist/naturalist is the lens through which I see the world and the sensibility I bring to both my painting and writing”. Her first book, The Last Island, a Naturalist’s Sojourn on Triangle Island, is a memoir of working as a seabird biologist and an elegy to one of the most wild and beautiful places on the BC coast. In her book of poetry, Circadia, scenes of ordinary life unfold in a backdrop of light cycles, tides, and weather. While on Haida Gwaii, she will be adjudicating the All Island Art Show on Friday March 23rd and giving an artist lecture that same evening starting at 7 p.m. at the Haida Heritage Centre. The next day, she will be offering a workshop entitled Loosen Up! This mixed media workshop will start with contour drawings working with photos of marine life to develop semi-abstract paintings in watercolour and ink. This workshop is great for loosening up and moving your work towards abstraction/impressionism. For more information, visit http://www.hgartscouncil.ca/all-island-art-show

What’s up at the QC Docks? By Shellene Van der Beke
For those wondering what’s up with the Queen Charlotte Government Wharf Improvement Project, well, it’s good news: It is moving forward. Just recently, two barges arrived loaded with project supplies such as steel pilings and interconnecting concrete pads.
Wharf improvements have been talked about for a long time, and seriously addressed for the past couple of years. The Queen Charlotte Harbour Authority (QCHA) announced the project’s go ahead back in November of last year. As with many large-scale endeavors on

Haida Gwaii, factors such as logistics and weather have played their parts in the delays. The project includes a new Hiab for the dock as well as an icehouse and filleting station for the Albion Fisheries processing plant. Structural repairs to the dock will include replacing the creosote-soaked wooden pilings with steel ones. Part of the existing processing plant will be torn down and an added-on section will be constructed on the other side to better service the commercial charter dock with its loading/unloading conveyor system. A collaboration between the QCHA, Albion Fisheries and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours division, the project is funded, as stated by 83 years young QCHA Director, Jack Armstrong, “from monies collected from the commercial fishing industry.” It’s good to see some of that
money invested back to our island communities. Jack was a commercial fisherman for over fifty years. Back in 1978, he oversaw the building of his 42-foot freezer troller named the Jalun River. “It was one of the BC Coast’s first fishing boats whose entire back hold had a built-in freezer,” Jack reports. At first, he and his crew made the 14hour trip each way to Prince Rupert to sell their catch. To save time and money, Jack then decided to hire a Hiab to load their catch into bins that were placed into a reefer and barged off-island. As other fishermen became interested in utilizing the same offloading and shipping methods, he soon purchased his own Hiab and he and his wife Lin started a company called Fish Lifters. Their son, Kiel also helped with the dock work from when he was 13 to 17 years old. He then took over the sports fish offloads in the summer.
To help expand local offloading efficiencies and capacities, and to add ice and processing services, Jack and Lin started the Codfather fish packing plant. (Codfather was a name that was given to Jack by cod fisherman who offloaded with them). “Back then, we had 22 employees and at one point we offloaded 140 to 150 boats per week. We once worked three days straight without stopping.” In 2005, Jack and his family sold the business to Albion Fisheries, who continue to operate it today. The Government Wharf Improvement Project is worth its weight in gold to keep our local fishing industry alive. There is no denying that Haida Gwaii is world-renowned as both a destination sports fishing spot and producer of top quality processed fish products. Both are important contributors to our local economy and ensure that visitors keep coming back.

Kitty Care Callout! The Haida Gwaii SPCA is looking for volunteers who are willing to foster cats and kittens in their homes until forever homes or transfers can be arranged for them. Dorothy and Mike Garrett have been our main cat fosterers ever since Dorothy co-established the Haida Gwaii Branch of the BC SPCA in 1987. Dorothy and Mike have been providing the Haida Gwaii SPCA with space in their guest house (at no charge) as a cat fostering facility for over twenty-five years. Now they are transitioning to a very well-deserved retirement and have sold their guest house. As of February 1, 2018, the Haida Gwaii SPCA will have to find alternative fostering accommodations for cats and kittens in need of forever homes.

Although a few offers have come into both HGPAWS and the Haida Gwaii SPCA, they are either not immediately available, are not permanently available, or are not within financial reach of either organization. If you are interested, or aren’t sure but would like more information on what might be involved and the support that’s provided, please call Dorothy at 250-559-8068, email her at doromike@ qcislands.net, or send a message through the “BC SPCA Haida Gwaii” Facebook account. We’ll do our best to make sure the cat or kitten you foster is a fit for your family or situation.
The Haida Gwaii SPCA is working with the Haida Gwaii Pro-Animal Welfare Society (HGPAWS) to find a permanent home for a humane education centre and pet adoption centre. In 2016 and 2017, the Haida Gwaii Pro-Animal Welfare Society (HGPAWS) tried to obtain sufficient funds for a down payment to purchase Dorothy and Mike’s Guest House with the intent of running it as a social enterprise to support animal welfare initiatives on Haida Gwaii. One of those initiatives involved expanding the cat fostering facility that Dorothy and Mike Garrett ran voluntarily. Unfortunately, HGPAWS was unsuccessful in obtaining sufficient funds to purchase the guest house. HGPAWS continues to look for a property from which to run a social enterprise and provide a permanent humane education and pet adoption centre (the BC SPCA will not establish a permanent

WAY OF DEATH A Sit Down with Community Undertaker Matthew Pierce
By Shellene Van der Beke
WITH MY JOB, I GET TO SIT DOWN and chat with people that are so rich with life experiences; exemplary souls doing things in and for our island communities that are truly awe-inspiring. With every person I meet, I realize how much there is to learn. (Thank goodness, or how very dull life would be without learning new things.) Living here on Haida Gwaii, we all have a sense of just how unique and revered our natural environment is. You may not be surprised to learn then that due to our remoteness, the death protocols that have developed on our islands are equally as inspiring and respectful of our place in this world. Haida burial practices are a sacred topic, and they are not discussed in this article. Perhaps, at a later time, if I am honored with their approval, I will publish that information. In March of last year, I had the pleasure of interviewing retired bookkeeper, recipient of the Order of Daajing Giids, Queen Charlotte and volunteer community undertaker for the past 25 years or so, George Westwood. George, for
the most part, has taken leave of his duties as a deathcare humanitarian and passed on this torch to other compassionate souls, one of them being protégé Matthew (Matt) Pierce. Matt and I recently chatted about deathcare on Haida Gwaii and I was astounded at how much I learned in such a short period of time. Matt emigrated from England with his family to Haida Gwaii in 1967. A carpenter by trade, around fifteen years ago, after the tragic death of a friend, he built his first coffin. Under George’s tutelage, he also learned, amongst many things, the process of laying out the body. “A coffin,” Matt clarifies, “is different than a casket. It is six-sided and often custom made, whereas a casket is rectangular.” As you may or may not know, unlike more populated areas, Haida Gwaii simply does not have enough people to warrant a funeral home setting up shop here. This fact makes for rather unique death planning and handling situations. Perhaps some of the questions I posed to Matt and the answers he shared will be as interesting to you as they were to me.

“It’s always an honor, each and every one.” —Matthew Pierce
When there’s a death on Haida Gwaii, what happens next? Matt, with a soft and kind smile responds, “Put on the kettle and have a cup of tea.” Beautifully put. The main thing is, breathe. No disrespect to the many levels of emotions that will result, but any death experience deserves space and grace…and the deceased is not going anywhere soon. (Humor often has superlative wings of comfort.) Pronouncement of Death: Matt explains that there are two situations that occur. An expected death or an unexpected death. Expected Death: With an expected death, whether a person spent their remaining moments at home or under hospice care, physicians may prepare a “Notification of Expected Death in the Home” in advance of the patient dying. Upon death, after your cup of tea, you do not have to call the police. Instead, call the BC Ambulance Service. * Unexpected Death: When you have overcome the shock and once you’ve had a cup of tea, it is the law that you call the RCMP. You can then also call an ambulance. Once deathly due diligence is completed by the RCMP, the deceased will then be transported to one of our two, on-island morgues. In the north, there is a 10 x 10 building with a
18
HG
walk-in cooler beside the Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital and Health Centre in Gaaw, Masset. In the south, there is a newly constructed viewing room with a 4-berth morgue beside our also new Xaayda Gwaay Ngaaysdll Naay, Queen Charlotte Hospital and Health Centre. The RCMP will notify the regional coroner and if an investigation regarding the cause of death is deemed necessary, the body will have to be shipped off-island for an autopsy. If it is decided that no investigation is needed, the next of kin or legal representative should follow the deceased’s wishes of either burial or cremation.
Burial or Cremation? Matt reported that the bulk of the wishes of the deceased here on Haida Gwaii are for cremation, with the remainder choosing burial. Although many factors come into play, the average cremation costs around $3500 if fully implemented by a funeral home. This fee includes the paperwork, body transport, cremation and return of the remains. Matt shares that Mackay’s Funeral Services & Crematorium in Terrace is a reputable business that has provided outstanding service to Haida Gwaii for many years. If the body is transported
by the family and delivered in person to the funeral home, the cost is around $1500. If a cemetery plot is wanted for the burial of the cremated remains, they are available in Gaaw, Masset for $50 and in Daajing.Giids, Queen Charlotte for $55. The costs for a burial on Haida Gwaii vary but start at around $1100. This covers the purchase of the plot, the opening and closing of the grave, and perpetual care of the plot. Brochures on responsibilities of the next of kin for burial on Haida Gwaii can be found at your nearest hospital and at the Service BC office in Daajing.Giids, Queen Charlotte.
Can anyone transport remains? Yes, but a Private Transfer Permit is required to do so. There is no fee for this but there are very specific processes one must follow to ensure the handling of the remains is done in a dignified and respectful manner. Ministry of Citizens’ Services Communications Manager, Joanne Whittier, relays that “As Haida Gwaii does not have a funeral home, Service BC staff are on hand to help with many of the services that funeral homes would normally provide such as accessing permits through the Vital Statistics Agency for services like cremation, burials or the transfer of the body.” She continues with, “As well, staff assist with the notification of government agencies for tax purposes and provide guidance in navigating other agencies to obtain documents like medical certification of death from a hospital. The only fee charged for these services is $27 for the death certificate issued by the Vital Statistics Agency. These are never easy times, but Service BC staff are on hand to help.” The Service BC office here on Haida Gwaii is located in Daajing Giids, Queen Charlotte. They will require the hospital certificate of death (signed by a doctor) and personal identification of the deceased (such as their birth certificate, social insurance card, driver’s license or other suitable ID).
knowledge and understanding. “It’s always an honor, each and every one.” He also wants people to know how important it is for everyone to have a will. If there is no will, your case goes to probate court and the government takes a portion of the value of the estate as an administration fee. In addition, there is also the added stress and often conflict it can put on those left behind. Be sure to keep a copy of your will in a safety deposit box and give a copy to your next of kin or your executor. Although death traditions and beliefs vary greatly from one culture to the next, in the end, as social reformer Henry Ward Beecher once said, “we are all sailing home”. There is a website worth checking out called Community Deathcare Canada (www.communitydeathcare.ca). As stated on their website, they are an emerging non-profit group coming together in response to the needs and interests of Canadians who seek to re-engage with dying and deathcare in more meaningful, holistic, and environmentally sustainable ways. To name a few of their values, they encourage more intimate participation, respect for our inherent wisdom and rights, and acknowledgment of diverse and sacred memorialization and meaning-making rituals. “You can tell a lot about a people by how they deal with the dead.” —George Westwood *911 is not a service that is available on Haida Gwaii. Emergency numbers for both the RCMP and the BC Ambulance Service in each community can be found on the inside cover of the Telus/Haida Gwaii phone book.
Is there a special message you would like to share with our readers? Matt explains that the services he offers our island communities greatly reward him with community service

You can get away with eating anything you want, but eventually, over time or as you age the digestive, immune system becomes weaker and weaker. What is really important is to get your food digested efficiently, without experiencing the inflammation required to fight allergens. Eating well can greatly improve the digestion and the elimination of toxins from your body, not to mention how much better you will feel every day. Indigestion has become so prevalent that it is considered normal, when in fact it is your body telling you that all is not right within. In addition, the masking of your bodies natural response with over-thecounter drugs further allows improper eating habits to continue that will be eventually lead to complications in the future. For easy elimination of allergens, go on a very bland diet for a few days, then cut out the following foods: dairy, peanuts, gluten, soy, eggs, shellfish, corn fish, processed or artificial foods and dyes. Add each of these foods back into your diet, one at a time to see if you have a reaction to it. If you do, it will be a trigger food, and you should avoid eating it.

HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT Taking Back Elder Gardens – Margaret Edgars By Liz Wouters
Margaret Edgars, a Haida elder who lives in Old Massett, has been a local food gatherer her whole life. She harvests wild cranberries, salal, huckleberries, salmonberries and cloudberries. She cans them, makes jams and sells food to the Local Foods Pantry. She also teaches food processing in the schools.
Last year, she took children into the forest near the Misty Meadow campground. In just a short way in, she could show the children many medicinal plants like yew wood, elderberry and single delight. Some plants are dried and made into a tea. “The children were very interested,” said Margaret, “they don’t know which plants are good or bad. A lot of information on wild plants has been lost.” Margaret is also a long-time gardener with hazelnut, apple, plum and cherry trees growing in her yard. Her large garden still holds strawberries, raspberries and currants. It started from a small plot and grew over the years. “My husband and I once decided to have a potato growing competition, so we cleared extra space, took good care of our potatoes and ended up with some that weighed 3 pounds. But I won the competition with a 5-pound potato, which was three potatoes grown together!” “I used to grow carrots and beets. I would pickle the carrots with jalapenos. The kids loved them and so did customers. I sold them for $8 a jar.” Her plum trees produced yellow damson and purple plums. She never could get her apple tree to produce fruit in spite of all the care and fertilizer she gave it over the years. Much like harvesting wild plants, “Gardening has been lost,” said Margaret, “the Village used to have lots of gardens. The younger generation needs to learn this. If you plant your own food, you know what you are eating, and it tastes better when it’s fresh and there are no additives in the food.” Taking Back Margaret’s Garden – A Work Bee Callout “I am sad to see my garden is overrun with salmon berries,” Margaret relays, but health issues are now limiting her ability to get out to work in her garden. Some volunteers from both the Gudangaay Tlaats’gaa Naay Secondary School in Masset and the Haida Gwaii Local Foods to School initiative have begun to help take back Margaret’s garden, but more help is needed. “They pruned my yellow plum tree,” Margaret reports, “which makes me very happy.” Work bee coordinator, Marylynn Hunt points out, “Margaret has shared so much of her volunteer time and knowledge with the community, she deserves our help.”

Horoscopes for January & February, 2018 Aries (March 20 - April 19) Dearest Aries, your life is right out front for all to see. So what is it that you want to share? It’s time to probe deep into the abyss of your life and determine; what are your goals and what makes you feel inspired? Reflect on all that has transpired in your life and file this under lessons learned. You are primed and ready to start fresh in the upcoming months. Keywords: aspire to, contemplate and mend. Taurus (April 19 - May 20) You may be struggling, dearest Taurus, because you are over thinking it instead of your standard way of overdoing it. Don’t close your eyes for a second; otherwise you may miss something important that wants to be seen. What is coming your way may show up unannounced, so prepare yourself for this. The surprises are just around the corner and your job is to enjoy them as much as possible. Keywords: ambition, innovative and delight. Gemini (May 20 - June 21) It’s important to take some alone time for yourself, dearest Gemini, in order to determine what truths you have been ignoring that need to be addressed. Have enough courage to trust your loved ones with your heart and inner thoughts. What you are going through is in front of an audience, so whatever that is, be sure it is something that you are proud to role model. Because like it or not, you are. Make time to adventure with loved ones as well as take time at home to regroup. Keywords: connection, limelight and advisor. Cancer (June 21 - July 22) You are in a bit of a conundrum, dearest Cancer. On the one hand you are feeling heavily responsible to your loved ones and this is pulling at your heartstrings. On the other hand, you need to have some independence and freedom in order to completely rejuvenate yourself. You are learning the fine art of balance and boundaries. Friends or family who have counted on you for their emotional support, do not value your newfound freedom and may be putting up a fuss. So be it. Let them have their opinions as long as you follow through on your promise to yourself that you are the most important person in your life. Keywords: liberty, power and align. Leo (July 22 - August 23) It is time to trust the people surrounding you, dearest Leo, and let them in to see another side of you. Whatever it is that is taking you into the realm of group consciousness, go with it. Get out your detective badge and figure out what emotional components you need for deep healing of your soul. Perhaps have a talk with your sadness, anger or resentment. Commune with nature to learn forgiveness, especially self-forgiveness. Keywords: hope, compassion and fierceness. Virgo (August 23 - September 22) You are being asked to lighten up, dearest Virgo. There’s some creative energy that wants to play out in your family and home life. Is there some kind of power struggle happening at home? It’s important that you value yourself enough to believe that what you want is just as important as what others desire. There may be a health issue that is whispering in your ear right now to pay attention. Don’t ignore this or it may have to get louder in order for you to hear it. Keywords: well-being, kindred-spirit and understanding.
Libra (September 22 - October 23) Dearest Libra, being so responsible to your family or friends, have left you feeling a bit drained and you are in need of some vibrant sunshine and exercise. Don’t let the strain you’ve been under affect your positive outlook. Your talents, hindsight and harmony are shining bright. Sometimes when you shine so bright, you are blinding to others. Luckily it is not your job to help them see you. It is only your job to be who you are. Keywords: radiance, gifted and inspired. Scorpio (October 23 - November 22) Dearest Scorpio, deep truths are trying to sprout up now from your family life and the past is trying to get exposure. As long as you continue to promote open-mindedness, you give the haters nowhere else to turn, except to your genuineness. Practice saying what you mean in as much diplomacy as you can muster, but however it comes out, speak it clearly and out loud. Nothing can change for the better until everyone releases the thoughts and actions that have been stuffed down for years. Keywords: authenticity, bravery and revelation. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 22) When you get quiet enough to hear your thoughts, dearest Sagittarius, what are you saying to yourself? Many times you are just too busy to understand what is making you feel inferior or fearful. You are such a capable person with so many talents. You just need to slow down enough to receive the wisdom of this chaotic time. Prioritize with a capital P. What’s important to devote your time to and what is not? This is your question of the hour. Realize that you are more than fine, you are brilliant. Keywords: solitude, assets and arrange. Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) I know that you are quite a responsible person, dearest Capricorn, so I’m not asking you to change that. Merely, I want you to decide whom you should be responsible to in the next couple months. And let me give you a hint. It starts with a Y and ends with an OU. You are the one that gets to be taken care of by you! Stay flexible otherwise you might not see the gift that’s right in front of you. Keywords: unforeseen, resources and fortitude. Aquarius (January 20 - February 19) You’re in the middle, dearest Aquarius, of an awakening. You are figuring out what is ending and what is now beginning. Step out in the light and move forward into the life you desire. If you know what I mean by this, great, go for the gusto! If you are unclear, step back; get quiet enough to let your thoughts speak to your mind. When in doubt, create! Make something out of thin air and see where this leads you. Keywords: acceptance, inspiration and unity. Pisces (February 19 - March 20) Something is coming to fruition in your life, dearest Pisces. Perhaps it’s a relationship that you planted many moons ago or maybe it’s a career path. This is your time to shine and shine bright. Celebrate this and show gratitude. Make a plan that will allow you to embrace the beautiful challenges along the way. Give other people the opportunity to connect with you in a deep and meaningful way that allows your beautiful soul to thrive. Keywords: brilliant, sparkle and livelihood.
