Haida Gwaii Eyes…Wide Open

Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges

Words Matter

by Shellene Van der Beke

Challenge: the impact and influence of media today.

I have and always will love movies. Recently, I rented a DVD from our local library (libraries so rock) called “Truth”. Once in a while, a movie comes along that fires me up…has me reaching for a pen and paper and expands my being. (Expansion so rocks)

Based on the true story about the news business (true stories so rock….OK, enough with the “so rocks”…tee hee), the movie “Truth” depicts the events that lead up to the decision of legendary American journalist and former CBS news anchor, Dan Rather, to retire…and the firing of his associate journalist, producer and author, Mary Mapes. Written and directed by James Vanderbilt, the film is based on the book “Truth and Duty” by Mary Mapes, a former ’60 Minutes’ producer. It is not so much the storyline that grabbed me, but the message, the moral of the story that was exhilarating. In the words of Dan Rather “You’re entitled to your own opinion, but you aren’t entitled to your own facts.”

This film is brilliant in communicating the truth about today’s media, whether via print, broadcast or the internet. In relation to his decision to retire, Mr. Rather declares “Entertainment values came to almost completely overwhelm news values.” He continues with “Yes, news is a business but it is equally important that some of the time, news needs to operate in the public interest. News is something that people need to know.” It really made me think when he also expressed his concern on the effect of today’s news on our young people…that they are starting to lose trust…and are heading towards writing off most news as lies.

In an interview with Mary Mapes, she states how news is important…for safety and wisdom. If done with integrity, news can inspire, educate, empower, and help to build strong, democratic societies.

Proactive Solutions: (Wisdom from Dan Rather)  Build awareness surrounding the fact that WORDS MATTER. What we think and say, what we do with our time, what we read…all lead to what we believe and do.  Keep asking questions. Be thorough.  Be wary of rumor becoming “fact”.  Collaborate with people who aren’t afraid to do the right thing.

“The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” Oscar Wilde ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Do you have a solution-based topic, thought or project you would like to share? We would love to hear from you!

RCMP News Release

Helpful crime prevention tips brought to you by your local RCMP The RCMP is concerned about any substance or product that may put the safety and security of Canadians at risk. The RCMP’s Drug Program aims to prevent drug-related social and economic harm by reducing the supply and demand for illicit drugs in Canada. Organized crime groups are involved in every aspect of illicit drug activity, with the resulting profits funding other crimes that can potentially affect all Canadians. The Masset and Queen Charlotte RCMP would like to advise the public of the various ways in which a suspected crime may be reported to police. Firstly, if you see a crime in progress, you may call the RCMP directly at the numbers listed below at anytime. The RCMP is aware that some citizens may be reluctant to come forward to report crimes in their communities for a number of reasons, including personal safety. You may report a crime anonymously by calling the RCMP and stating that you wish to keep your personal information private. You may alternatively provide your name and contact information and request that this be kept confidential, to allow officers to contact you for further details without compromising your personal information. The RCMP also encourages the use of CrimeStoppers, by calling their anonymous tip line at 1-800-222-8477 or by accessing their website at www.bccrimestoppers.com and following the links to Northern BC. Friends With Four Feet By Cyndi Bird

Hello Haida Gwaii! I'm Cyndi Bird, a certified equine sport therapist, and retired dog groomer, that now proudly calls Port Clements my home. “Friends With Four Feet” is a new, monthly column here in the HG Trader magazine that shares ideas and concepts about creating a healthier quality of life with our furry, and sometimes feathered, friends. Here at The Bird House, we share our lives with 1 dog, 2 cats, 2 fish, 4 horses and soon to be 6 chickens. With this abundance of animal companionship running around, sometimes it's hard to make sure everyone is getting the attention they deserve. Quality time is something that every being needs, not just human beings. Quality time isn't something defined by type of activity, or the amount of time spent doing this activity, it's defined by how present we are, with that being, in that moment. The act of connecting with your four legged friends can be easier said than done. Every dog, cat, horse, human, or other critter, is different in how they connect. Some are shy and reserved, while others are bubbly and exuberant. Normally it's fairly easy to connect if you have the same personalities, but what if you don't?

The animals I share my home with don't always share my joy and exuberance for life. Even though, for the most part our personalities fit fairly well, I find that some of my critters can get a little left out of the quality time the others soak up rather selfishly. It took me a long time to realize there was an odd one out, and an even longer time to realize how unfair it was to the one who was left waiting for me to come to my senses and meet them on their level. Recognizing when I need to change my vibe a little so I can connect and spend more quality time with all my animal companions is a daily but worthwhile goal for me. One that makes enjoyable for everyone who lives on our tiny farm. Ta Ta for now, Cyndi

The Rock from Tasu by Shellene Van der Beke

The topic of this month’s “Roots” historical article is about the mine and town that once existed in Tasu, located on the west coast of Haida Gwaii. A few moons ago, my Husband, Ben, our fur-child, Scrappy and I sailed this area. We spent a considerable amount of time anchoring in coves…waiting for less than 1.5 meter waves, windows of smooth sailing opportunities, to come our way.

Magnetite stone from Tasu Photo by Shellene Van der Beke

I read, collected shells, took pictures, fished and cooked…Ben took care of pretty much everything to do with being the captain of our vessel and trip. He also wood carved and took on the job as the official fish-death-bonker. We both loved to walk the beaches and explore the shorelines….I gathered shells…and rocks.

One of our anchorages was in a beautiful cove in Tasu. Very new to Haida Gwaii, we sailed with so much to learn about the area. We also had no real agenda other than enjoying the thrill of sailing and seeing Haida Gwaii’s spectacular coastal paradise in its natural state. To make a long story short, in Tasu we skiffed ashore and began walking through the forest…curious to see what the brightness was that was coming through trees ahead of us. We soon discovered that we were walking across a small stretch of land that separated our cove from yet another, just as beautiful, on the other side! I now know that we were actually standing smack in the middle of what was once the townsite of Tasu! The mountain nearby was deeply carved out and there were remnants of a shipping berth on the shoreline. Beneath the mountain were many rocks like the one in the picture….it is super heavy and it sparkles. Having done a bit of research on Tasu, this rock has taken on a whole new meaning. A cherished memento of our adventure and of the history of this land my family and I call home.

Tiny Steps, Big Change It’s springtime! What is stirring in you? Maybe it’s time to exercise more or get stronger. Getting started can be the hardest part. What if you started with a single step that is so easy that you cannot, NOT do it! For example: last fall, I decided I wanted to start doing fifteen push ups a day. I could barely do one. But I was motivated because I wanted to stay strong enough to lift my bike onto my car roof rack. I figured push ups would keep my arms and upper body strong. That is important when you are creating a new habit. You have to know what the benefit will be for you in order to stay motivated. So, I chose my first tiny step that was so easy, I could not, NOT do it. Week one - one push up a day. You might ask “What good is one push up?” Well, it is one push up more than no push ups. And remember, it’s about starting the habit, not focussing on the end goal at this stage. Week two: two push ups a day. Week three: three push ups a day, and so on. The second thing to remember about starting a new habit is to insert the new step into the normal routine of your day. I made my push ups part of my tea-making each morning. Fill teapot with tea bag and boiled water, let it steep for 5 minutes. The tea steeping was my trigger for push ups, right there on the area rug near the kitchen sink. The surprising thing was that once I was down on the floor, and did my required number, sometimes I just wanted to do more, for the fun of it. By the end of 4 weeks, I was doing 10 or more push ups a day. Each day I did them, I put a check mark on the calendar. That is tip number three. Keep a visual record of your success because it is truly rewarding to see the effort you have put in already. It makes you want to do more. Yes, there were days I did not do the push ups. So I kindly cut myself some slack and started again. Even if it was only one push up when actually I should have done eight or nine. Remember, choose the step that is too easy to NOT do, especially to get you back on track. So how about you? Let’s say you want to walk more each day. What is the Photo by Liz Wouters first tiny step that is easy to fit into your daily routine? Maybe for week one, each day after breakfast, it is put on walking shoes and walk to the street and back. Check! Week two: add on a minute of walking. Each week, add minutes and check marks. Keep your walking shoes in plain view to remind you each day of your new habit. Your tiny steps will eventually lead to a big new habit that will build your confidence and well-being. This article was inspired by James Clear, author of Transform your Habits. Liz worked for the BC Government in Victoria for the past 11 years. And then adventure called. Six months ago she moved to Queen Charlotte to work at the medical clinic. She feels very lucky to work and live here! Liz Wouters is a Certified Coach and also trained in psychology, conflict management, adult education and nursing. The Hot Topic of Biomass By Jay Ooishi

T

here has been quite a stir over the last few months about the biomass project in the Village of Port Clements (VOPC). A lot of inquiries were made on what biomass is and what it actually does. We’ll start with the term biomass. Biomass as being relevant to our project means waste wood fuel. There are many sources of waste wood such as nuisance alder and slash from the forestry industry. Often it can include scraps and dust from milling and non-commercially viable wood that would otherwise be burned in piles. Biomass is an abundant renewable resource on Haida Gwaii and we use this for fuel to generate heat.

researching whether or not this was viable for Port Clements. There are over 30 projects in Canada using our biomass boiler system which was manufactured by Fink Machine, a BC Company. Thus far, these other projects have been very successful in reducing heating costs and have proven to be low maintenance. Like all pilot projects there are a lot of challenges to overcome. It’s not as simple as burning wood and pouring heat into a building. The system must have a lifespan and efficiency model to recover its investment, maintenance and operational costs. This is the risk in our project. Beyond these risks are great and tangible opportunities The VOPC Biomass Project is a pilot project that uses for Port Clements and Haida Gwaii as a whole. this alternative fuel to heat public buildings. This idea The vision for the VOPC Biomass Project is a step in is not new. There are many small scale examples of it the right direction towards sustainability, environmental all over these islands from pellet burners to copper coils consciousness, and self-reliance. It is much like Haida in fireplaces. What is new however is that the project Gwaii and the people of these islands that I love so is utilizing very advanced technology from Europe much. The benefits of success are numerous. The fuel where high fossil fuel prices have motivated industry is currently sourced from Haida Gwaii Forest Products. into looking at alternate and sustainable fuels. The They are actively in pursuit of using local wood waste VOPC’s project has also used the concept of district from the lumber HGFP pellet and briquette samples / photo: heating; a system that generates heat in a central boiler mill. It is then Shellene Van der Beke and pipes it to multiple public buildings with expansion processed into capabilities. This further increases the potential of fuel c o m p r e s s e d and equipment efficiency by eliminating redundant fuel on site that equipment and combustion efficiency losses. Many can be used in people and organizations have been involved in seeing the biomass this project to fruition: from VOPC Councils, past system. The and present, and VOPC Public Works Department source of where to the Northern Development Initiative Trust and the our biomass Provincial Gas Tax Trust. fuel is produced Many considerations have to be made when to where it is undertaking a project such as this. To some degree it is consumed is a experimental. Some of the unknown variables are fuel mere 3 km. A quality, climate, logistical costs, maintenance cost and big step in the longevity. The VOPC invested much time and effort right direction 8

compared to the alternate, fossil fuel which must travel thousands of kilometers from where it is processed to where we consume it.

Briquette Plant at Haida Gwaii Forest Products

The hope is that this will create an additional source of revenue and jobs for our island communities. In addition, we hope to reduce heating costs in two public buildings. These two buildings house Port Clements Elementary School, the VOPC Office, Public Library, Village Council Chambers, Seniors Room, Fire Hall, Athletic Gym and Haida Gwaii Trader headquarters. The savings in fuel costs in turn will enable more funds toward community initiatives from which we can all benefit. It is a win for local business, employment opportunities, sustainability, and ultimately our community. The Biomass Project is currently heating both the Multiplex and Fire Hall buildings but there still work to do. At times it feels painfully slow but we are progressing into the future with optimism.

Tasu “Lake of Plenty” According to Haida legends, 180 years ago, the great-great-great Grandmother of Skidegate Haida, Albert Jones was gathering soft inner bark from cedars for basket weaving. Suddenly she noticed a strange, black stone glistening in what is now known as “Contact Creek” which is located on the west coast of Albert Jones Picture taken in Haida Gwaii. She placed it in her canoe July, 1966 and paddled to her family’s summer, black cod fishing camp. Her Father was mystified by the heavy, alien stone and, in accordance with tribal custom, took it to the chief who was also at a loss for an explanation. The rock Albert’s ancestor found is called magnetite –chalcopyrite, a mineral rock that often contains iron, copper and sometimes a bit of gold and silver. The area this rock was discovered is called Tasu which is a Haida word for “Lake of Plenty” and pronounced with softness, Tass-soo. It was not until 1909, many years after this mysterious discovery, that a curious prospector from Grand Forks named Gowing asked a prominent Haida of Skidegate at that time, Henry Moody, and Moody’s Father, to show him their four staked claims where this rock was known to occur. Gowing purchased these claims and began a small mining endeavor. Throughout the years, various, small scale, commercial mining enterprises operated in the Tasu area, mining mainly for copper and a bit of Gold and Silver.

Tasu, 1971

From 1951 to the early 60’s, the BC Government prevented iron ore export from all but a few properties but when this restriction was removed, in 1964, Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. began construction of one of the largest mines ever to operate on Haida Gwaii. Known as Wesfrob Mine, this large-scale enterprise included building an entire town with a population of around 400 people! This town had power, well graveled and lit roads, ninety living units that included single homes, row houses and apartment blocks, a sixty room hotel (rates ranged from $3$3.50/day), school, co-op general store, recreation center with a swimming pool, a six bed hospital, post office, a CIBC bank that opened on pay days, a Laundromat and dry cleaner and a church.

Tasu playground and residences, 1974

If you were to travel to the Tasu mine site today, you would see that the mountain has an altered side to it but you would hardly guess there was ever a town there…just goes to show you how quickly Mother Nature reclaims her wild state….lickety split! The Tasu mine and town site (1964-1977)

VOPC Book Club Goes “Handless” By T.M. Ooishi

“It was like a love letter to Bombay” and “He was the worst of cowards” were some of the comments shared by members of the Village of Port Clements Book Club after reading March’s book titled “The Cripple and his Talisman” by Anosh Irani. Imagine…losing one hand. As a challenge relating to this read, book club members were asked to use only their right hand for one hour prior to meeting. It was tough but the conversation surrounding this book was even tougher.

did an amazing job bringing out everyone’s voice about this novel. Many found it difficult to finish or did not finish it all because of the violent imagery. Others really enjoyed the book and thought it was beautiful, humorous and very imaginative. In the end the book evoked a sense of darkness vs. light, took us beyond our conventional world and offered us a book that otherwise would have remained on the shelf. The book club’s next book is “Cool Water” by Dianne Christy “Conch” Warren and we meet on Konschuh, our facilitator, April 18th at 7:30pm in the

Love Haida Gwaii celebrating local, independently owned business

Haida Gwaii

ALAN LORE OF BUDGIE’S BACKPACKERS AND SIGHT SEERS IN PORT CLEMENTS - A LOVE HAIDA GWAII SUCCESS STORY I returned from a 4 month visit to New Zealand in 2011. Having talked to many hostel owners and hostel clients in that country, I was inspired to open Budgies Backpackers & Sight Seers hostel in Port Clements in early 2012. I began offering kayaking and land tours in 2013 and had soon turned my hobby business into a legitimate summertime occupation. I was contacted about the Love Haida Gwaii program by a few individuals (Mary Lou, Kathy James, and a mysterious Amy from Quesnel). With fairly little effort on my part, a webpage for my business was created on the Love Haida Gwaii website and featured on the Love Haida Gwaii Facebook page. My Love Haida Gwaii profile and photos were getting shared around the world, and friends from university, living as far away as Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia were “liking” the adverts and reconnecting with me. On occasion I get opportunities for promoting my business through Love Haida Gwaii on Facebook, newspaper features and events like the Love Haida Gwaii tradeshows. Facebook is a great resource for promoting deals and information about my upcoming season.

The one-time Love Haida Gwaii fee of $50 was well worth the amount of effort poured into advertising and website design that the Love Haida Gwaii team took care of for me. This saved me many hours last winter. I was able to spend more time providing tours and operating my hostel while LHG took care of my online marketing commitments. Probably 60% of my guests find me through the Love Haida Gwaii and Go Haida Gwaii websites. The rest is made up of a mixture of word of mouth, and my businesses’ websites. As far as accommodation and outfitting goes, advertising is a seed that is planted and grows into future clientele. This is what I learned from my mentors in New Zealand who taught me about running my own hostel and living space. After 10 years of practice, hostel owners have told me the place would take care of itself (minus maintenance). Plans to expand the business are beginning to move into the forefront as I have purchased an island this year and I look forward to working with Love Haida Gwaii in the future on advertising more accommodations in the beautiful Juskatla Inlet/Masset Inlet.

This was evident in the stands at Williams Lake with cheering fans and Facebook posts motivating the players from Haida Gwaii. Already looking to next year the team is back practising. Thrift Shop is getting bigger and better and making the islands a better place to live through infrastructure improvements. The Thrift Shop was also able to demonstrate that it has lots of community support: it has held successful fundraisers, and submitted several letters of support from groups like Northern Health’s Mental Health and Addictions Services, the Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace and the Village of Queen Charlotte. In fact, the Society is contributing more than $60,000 of its own savings to help pay for the project, as well as volunteer hours. The Gwaii Trust grant of $166,426 will pay for about 70 percent of the total project cost. The Thrift Shop Society is a non-profit group run entirely by volunteers, and the shop and its services have been an important part of our community for decades. The expansion project will see a 24’ x 26’ addition built onto the existing building, almost doubling the shop’s space. The addition will include a secure drop-off bin, a covered deck, and an enclosed storage space. But that’s not all. A Senior Moment

by Manzanita Snow

Its spring, let’s face it – time to move before the kingpins seize up and you have to say what color wheelchair you want. First, you have to get up out of bed. Yeh, yeh, I know. But you have to use it or lose it. Don’t have much to lose? Better work at what you have left – it’s valuable! If you doubt my word on this, just pay a short visit to the hospital and see where you could be headed. After which, gratitude will flood back into your life and soon you’ll be cranking those faithful old arms and legs along the walking trails in all weather.

Get a dog and walk him or her – dogs must go for a walk (or two) daily and you get bundles of love in return. Do your housework – its exercise and it demands to be done – sometimes. Gardening is great – garden boxes can replace full scale farming or even just pots on a window sill provide joyful movement. Yoga and alternative fitness sessions are often available here. To find out more, call Haida Gwaii Recreation at 250-626-5652 or email qcirec@gmail.com. OK, for those who don’t want to move at all: try chair stretching, ankle rotating, shoulder rolls, anything. If it’s raining or snowing you can dust off that expensive treadmill you bought last spring off the TV. Piles of these pricey gadgets are available second hand from people who were sure they’d use them and never did. These are defeated people, conquered by inertia – but not you – snow on the roof but fire in the hearth – you’re going to save yourself and feel happier and better and welcome each new day. Great Days: The Skidegate Trolling Fleet I was born in 1942 during WWII, the second of seven children of Alex and Julie Wilson of Skidegate, Haida Gwaii. I lived a great life with my parents’ generation; the era of troller fishing. I was part of a fantastic community of sharing. Our family life centered on fishing and, since I could crawl, my Dad packed me around on the troller he owned and helped build.

Back then, there were around 50 vessels in the Skidegate trolling fleet and there were just as many boat houses that lined the length of the Skidegate shoreline. In the winter, sounds of hammering and smoke from steaming fires drew young and old alike. Hard at work were woodwork masters and boat builders such as Gordon Cross, Vern & Cliff Jones, Walter Russ, Ernie Gladstone, Dwyer Brown, Brothers Pete and Harry Martin, Jack Pollard, Walter Stevens Eagle, Jimmy Jones, Brothers Ray and Swede Jones, Donald and his Dad Arthur Moody…and many others. Many of my school chums had to go to residential school, but as I was out with the fishing fleet, I missed being selected to go. At first I was sad to not go as the various levels of occupational skills that were taught at school proved helpful, but after hearing of bad times from some returning chums, I gladly accepted that I was not with them. Building boats, I worked beside my Dad and Gordon Cross who taught me how to steam wood. One of my duties was to keep the fire hot and this meant I had to start it early in the day.

Some boat building supplies like nails, caulking and some oak or fir for the boat ribs came from off island but much of the wood was wrestled out of the forest. This is where friends came in very handy. With the use of pulleys, lines, jackalls, skids and boat motors, wood was cut and moved to the beach.

Great friendships were forged in the sharing of hard work. This work was combined with hunting, good food prepared by family members and great stories…shared around work party bonfires...stories of general life, the old days, trips taken and newest equipment, etc. Most every person worked constantly, without a break for hours on end, day by day. History Worth Repeating Back then, the whole community worked together and hard work was not only shared by all, but was a source of great pride, fun and celebration. We ate delicious food and enjoyed spending time with family and community. It is the things we work hardest for that will reward us the most.

Premium, Quality Meats As the awareness grows of how important it is to eat quality food, local sources of healthy proteins are becoming more and more valued. We are fortunate here on Haida Gwaii to be able to fish and hunt in the wild and, when the supply is available, source healthy meats from local farms such as Richardson Ranch in Tlell and Island Acres Butcher Shop in Port Clements. Island Meats & Sausage also produces some excellent quality sausages, pepperoni and other specialty products, available at the Crow’s Nest Country Store in Tlell. Here is some more good news! A new source of very high quality, hormone and antibiotic free meat called “Two Rivers Specialty Meats” is also now available at Isabel Creek Store in Queen Charlotte. Two Rivers owners Margo and Jason Pleym state on their website that they believe that people should know where their food is coming from, and that it was produced ethically and naturally. Two Rivers Specialty Meats is purveyor of fine meats…in other words, they do all the leg work that ensures that all the products they put their label on meets a very high standard. They are a BC company based in North Vancouver whose products are produced with partner farms located both in BC and Alberta, all of which commit to raising animals ethically and naturally, while farming the land sustainably. The Two Rivers products that Isabel Creek carries include organic beef, organic chicken, bison, lamb chops, venison, bratwurst and some very delicious duck and bison charcuteries (salami). High quality proteins are essential for optimal health and with a high caliber meat like Two Rivers, they cost a little bit more, but it is a matter of “quality over quantity”; a little goes a long way. Horoscopes for April 15th to May. 15, 2016 ”The Stars are Singing Your Song!” This month’s HG Stargazers includes a song that has meaning for your sign. Take a moment to Google the lyric and listen to YOUR song!

Aries (March 20-April 19) I hear you singing the Janis Joplin song, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose…” But may I remind you that there is something to lose if you act too selfish and self absorbed. Yes, this is the season of Aries and you may be feeling your oats, so to speak, but just remember that including your loved ones in your life decisions, is of the utmost importance. Key Words: Connection, Meaningful, Mentoring Taurus (April 19-May 20) “If you want to sing out, sing out. And if you want to be free, be free. Cause there’s a million ways to be, you know that there are…” This is Cat Stevens at his finest and at your finest too. It’s time to wake up and smell the roses. You can choose who you want to be. A mover and a shaker, a mentor and a teacher or sit in meditation for peaceful harmony. It’s all at the buffet table of life, waiting for you to pick and choose. Key Words: Power, Peace, Productive

Gemini (May 20-June 21) Life is confusing sometimes, isn’t it, dear Gemini? Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young sang, “Stand by the stairway you’ll see something certain to tell you, confusion has its cost…” I ask you to sit with this not knowing, until you are ready to know. It might help to do a little soul searching in the meantime. But any way you look at it, it’s always meaningful for your life vision. Try sitting under the stars tonight and breathe in their glory. Key Words: Listen, Serve, Intuition Cancer (June 21-July 22) The Moon rules your sign, dear Cancer. One meaning of this is that you have come here to manage your rich, emotional life. For the next few weeks, it’s important to balance your right to feel loved and appreciated with your ability to not care about any of that! Listen to Simon and Garfunkel, who sang, “The Moon rose over an open field…” Do this. Rise up and take a good look around at all that you are illuminating. Key Words: Shine, Rise, Reflect Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Front and center is where you may find yourself now, dear Leo. As Coldplay sings, “You’re a sky, you’re a sky full of stars, you get lighter the more it gets dark...” And you do, especially now. You shine brighter as the darkness sets in. But soon you are going to ask yourself: what goals have I completed and what do I have left to do? What are the ways that you will balance them with your home and personal life? These are your important questions of the hour. Take some time to think about this, but not too much time. Key Words: Aspire, Family, Believe

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) You have come to a place, dear Virgo, where hope springs eternal. Where ideas form complete sentences of belief. Listen to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young sang: “You, who were on the road, must have a code, that you can live by…” Because in order for any good Virgo to embrace the qualities of hope and faith, they need a plan. Trust the process and try and let go of inflexible plans. Instead, create a plan that allows you room for some magic and spontaneity. Key Words: Embrace, Freedom, Faith

22

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Deep meaning is part of your theme song in the next few weeks, dear Libra. What is happening around you and how do you give it meaning? It’s time to really pay attention and understand that you are getting signs and synchronicities every single day. Do you hear and see them? Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young sang: “If I had ever been here before, I would probably know what to do…” Breathe in this message. Pay attention to the feelings inside of you. Key Words: Focus, Intuition, Connection Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Tina Turner sang: “What’s love got to do, got to do with it?...” Plenty, it would seem, dear Scorpio. You are facing a time where your heart and soul needs to break out and step into your life, while your true nature wants to connect with others. Self versus others is your theme for the month ahead. How to feel like you are getting your needs met while still valuing others. Balance these two issues and we will find you happy and fulfilled. Key Words: Communicate, Assertive, Family and Friends Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Out of all the zodiac signs, dear Sagittarius, I feel like you are the one who needs a little break from the latest high intensity level. I ask you to create! Whether this is art, music, dancing, hiking in nature, painting the bedroom, or any other numerous activities, give yourself permission to feel good to be alive. Fleetwood Mac sang a song called Gypsy. Here are your lyrics to live by: “To the gypsy, that remains. Faces freedom, with a little fear. I have no fear, I have only love…” Key Words: Pleasure, Recreate, Play Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Do a little soul searching now, dear Capricorn. Go within. Stay home more. Contemplate your space. Uncover your joy. Of course you do this with determination, like you are famous for. Remember that sometimes doing nothing is actually doing something. It’s rejuvenating, and recharges your battery for future endeavors. Matthew Perryman Jones sings: “And trees would bend with sacred grace, beneath the silver moon…” Do you feel the simplicity and peace when you hear these words? This is your mantra. Key Words: Rest, Reflect, Recharge Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Your survival instinct may be stuck in the on position now, dear Aquarius. This is not a bad thing but just remember that you are enough! You have enough, as does everyone else. Just plug into the power of manifestation and abundance. It’s there for the taking. Cat Stevens sang these lyrics that play perfect with you now: “Miles from nowhere, guess I’ll take my time, oh yeah to reach there…” Know that the answers to your questions lie just around the corner. Be patient. Key Words: Understanding, Grateful, Focus Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Crosby, Stills and Nash .sang “If you smile at me, I will really understand, cause that is something, everybody does in the same language…” This is what I want you to consider; smile, while asking for what you want, smile while choosing your life consciously and smile while you take a step forward into whatever pleases you. Choose to be just a little bit selfish now. You’re the decider, so decide. Key Words: Power, Desire, Shine
