Haida Gwaii Eyes…Wide Open
Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges
Unity in Diversity by Shellene Van der Beke
A gathering of people from all walks of life. Just enough wind to keep the sun-kissed day from getting too hot. Focused faces of awe, pride and delight…the recent Unity Pole raising ceremony in Skidegate was a grand day indeed.
A majestic and magical work of art symbolizing the state of being joined as a whole. People working together to achieve a rather lofty task. Respect for elders. Celebration of culture. For fans of oneness, it just doesn’t get much better than that. Challenge: How to respect each other’s differences but still work together.
Taking Action: How can we unify our efforts? By creating a common vision. Adapted from the book “Thriving Beyond Sustainability” by Andres R. Edwards, things to focus on include: Define what makes us thrive personally (that does not sabotage oneself or others). Identify, map, honor and preserve our community’s foodshed, watershed and energy, transportation and economic links. Explore how to incorporate resilience into our networks of families, friends, colleagues, workplace and community. Develop community building events that celebrate the talents and resources of our community members. Take stock of what nourishes us. Create time and energy to implement these activities and inspire others to do the same.
“So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.” Baha’u’llah

Dirty Dogs Done Dirt Cheap While professional grooming and bathing certainly has a place, especially for those of you who have very long or thick coated dogs, there comes a time when you just need to give your beloved, but unfortunately stinky, pet a bath. Cats tend to keep themselves fairly clean so unless you have a particularly dirty cat or you suffer from allergies to your cat, bathing is not a natural part of a feline’s life. If you do decide to bathe your cat, please make sure that you use cat friendly shampoo and conditioner. Most horses fair well with an annual bath. My mare Pan seems to love the cold hose on a hot day, however, many horses appreciate at least slightly warm water. Allowing your hose to sit in the sun for a few hours in direct sunlight is a great way to warm up water for a low cost, outdoor bath. The longer your hose, the longer your hot water will last. This is also a pleasant way to wash short to medium coat dogs (such as labs, border collies and some terriers).
water system. Please keep the delicate balance of marine life in mind when washing your pet. Aside from the heat up the hose trick, my favorite means of bathing my dog is to have them jump in the shower with me. I figure they are going to get me wet any ways I may as well shower too. Using both shampoo and conditioner will help alleviate post bath matting for longer coated dogs, and help get the shedding for shorter coated dogs over and done with more quickly.
There are two reasons we want to use warm water when washing our pets. #1 Obviously, cold water can be cruel. (You’ve been sprayed with a cold hose without your permission and it feels awful, doesn’t it?) #2 All shampoo and conditioner formulations are designed to work with warm water. They do not properly wash or condition in cold water. The old throw the stick in the water trick is also a poor choice for a proper bath for 2 reasons. #1 As said above, cold water does not properly wash and when your pet runs into the water all the hair folds back on itself trapping pockets of product in the coat making for an even poorer clean. #2 Shampoo and conditioner are not good for the environment unless they have been properly filtered through a gray

Loving What Is! This month’s topic is about “The Work” and if it is new to you, it may seem odd, if not a bit impossible. To begin, think about what is not working so well in your life that causes you stress. Probably, you wish these things were different. When we want things to be different than what they are, we suffer. According to “The Work”, developed by Byron Katie, the reason we suffer is not because of what others do to us, or because of what happens to us, but because of the thoughts we have about those people or situations. We wish that what is, isn’t. And that causes us pain.
Now flip the story on its head! Katie calls it The Turnaround. For example: “I think my friend Gerry shouldn’t talk so much” becomes “I think my friend Gerry should talk so much”. Why? If I want to be honest (and the work is all about being honest) storytelling is who he is! It’s how he connects with others. That is reality. Another turn around: I shouldn’t talk so much! True. Sometimes in conversations I do talk too much! Also, my internal talking/mind chatter can drive me crazy!
The solution? With curiosity and humour, examine those thoughts-that story we tell ourselves- and turn them around.
Another turn around: I should talk so much (like Gerry). True again. Sadly, sometimes I hold back from participating fully in a conversation. Sometimes, I just listen too much.
“The Work” offers four questions to help us see a different story.
Seeing my story about Gerry from a different perspective shows me I have things I want to and can change for myself, instead of forcing Gerry to be someone he isn’t.
Here is an example: I think my friend Gerry shouldn’t talk so much so others and myself can be part of the conversation. I find some conversations with him stressful. Question #1: Is it true that he shouldn’t talk so much? My answer: No and yes. He’s a great storyteller, but still l want space for others to talk too. Question #2: Can you absolutely know that it is true (that he shouldn’t talk so much)? My answer: No. Many people enjoy his stories!
Does “The Work” say we passively accept everything in our life? No. It means we free up our energy to constructively deal with what is, instead of feeling helpless in situations we wish were different. For a happier life, Katie says we can change the story we tell ourselves and simply love what is.
Question #3: How do you react, what happens, when you have that thought (that he shouldn’t talk so much)? Answer: I get quiet and withdraw. Sometimes I interrupt him. Question #4: Who would you be without that thought (that he shouldn’t talk so much)? Answer: I would be more peaceful inside, stay connected in the conversation and appreciate the enjoyment he gives to others.

MEET PETE Haida Gwaii Trader is excited to welcome Pete Moore to the team! You might recognize him from the Edge of the World stage, or maybe as the co-host of the Kay Korner podcast, but now you’ll know him as the newest member of the Haida Gwaii Trader editorial team. Pete was born and raised in Queen Charlotte, but left the islands for post-secondary school in 2012. He recently graduated from the University of Victoria, with a General Degree in English and Professional Writing in Journalism and Publishing, and a Minor in Art History. After 4 years away from Haida Gwaiii, he was eager to get back involved in the community as soon as he returned home. Pete will be coming on board as the Assistant Editor, fulfilling a “jack-of-all-trades” like role. This will include journalism, graphic
design, sales and technical support, just to name a few.
“I really wanted to get involved with something that was made for the community by the community, and I feel like Haida Gwaii Trader is just that.” Pete’s schooling, skills, and, most importantly, his passion for the islands he grew up on make him a great fit with what Haida Gwaii Trader is all about. If you’ve got a story idea, something you would like to promote, or even just a question, be sure to say “Hi” when you see him around town.
Feel free to get in touch with Haida Gwaii Trader by phone at 250-557-2088, or by email at info@haidagwaiitrader.com

A LIVING MUSEUM By Pete Moore
Earlier this summer, a large fragment of a pole was donated to the Haida Gwaii Museum’s collection. The cedar piece depicts the ear of a bear figure, and is about 3 feet in height and 2 feet in width; putting this into scale, considering that this is only the ear, the entire original figure is estimated to have stood about 6 feet on what must have been a massive pole. It was donated to the museum by art collectors Michael Audain and Yoshiko Karasawa who came across it at an auction and immediately recognized its significance. Sean Young, an employee at the Haida Gwaii museum with a background in archeology, estimates the piece to date back to between the 1830’s and the 1850’s. At first, he, and the others who had been studying the fragment, had figured that it may have originated from a northern village, however the length of the fingers was a design feature that led them to believe that it may have actually been from a southern village. On the other hand, the fact that master carvers travelled and took inspiration from other villages, Young points out, leaves the pole’s origin to remain a bit of a mystery.
The length of the figure’s fingers is longer than designs seen in other poles of the same time period

Although not much is know about the pole, its significance to the museum is huge. “It’s not just that we got this beautiful piece back, and it is quite stunning, it is the act of the person wanting it to come home – knowing it should come home,” says museum curator and co-chair of the Skidegate Repatriation Committee Nika Collison. Repatriation is one of the many pillars that the museum stands on; “The museum is built on repatriation,” Collison says, estimating that “probably over 95%” of the museum’s collection was repatriated or donated.
The cut lines on the left show how the pole was orignally obtained
Although the pole fragment might be the most recent piece, it is part of a seemingly endless stream of repatriated and donated items. Local resident Kathy Pick recently donated a Robert Davidson silver bracelet that dates to around the 1960s, when he was still practicing traditional formline. Last year, one of Bill Reid’s cedar hats that was woven by master weaver Primrose Adams was given to the museum. With items being added frequently, the museum’s collection has taken on a life of its own – constantly growing and becoming more diverse.
“It’s not just that we got this beautiful piece back, and it is quite stunning, it is the act of the person wanting it to come home – knowing it should come home.” - Nika Collison
The full fragment Nika speaks about the many ways that pieces were taken from Haida Gwaii, some stolen from graves or village sites, some purchased during the time of the potlatch ban when the Haida were adapting to a newly imposed system. With these pieces, and bringing those pieces back home rightfully. The pole fragment, for instance, was obviously cut off of the pole (as can be seen by the clear cut marks along the sides), so to have it return home is truly significant. A growing collection or the significance of bringing a piece home, however, are not the only motives behind repatriation. “It’s about the relationships that need to be formed, to both right the wrongs of the past and then figure out how to coexist and move forward,” states Collison. A piece returning to Haida Gwaii inspires so much excitement and learning and maintaining healthy relationships with other museums allows this to continue. Morever, with about 12 thousand pieces across the globe in around 130 museums, Collison notes, the representation of Haida Gwaii and the Haida people is important too, as long as it can be self-determined, which is reliant on strong relationships.

The Skidegate Repatriation Commitee translates repatriation as “Yahguudangang,” meaning “to pay respect.” Ultimately, for the Haida Gwaii Museum and the committee alike, this seems to be the ultimate goal: to not only build respectful relationships with other institutions, but to pay respect to the ancestors of Haida Gwaii. This is an ongoing project, and pieces like the pole fragment, the silver bracelet, and the cedar hat are just a few examples of it working.

Zz-zzzz-zzz-zzz
came the sound. First distant then so close it felt like it was in my head. I opened my eyes and was so surprised to see a red buzzing shape seemingly attached to my forehead, I promptly fell over backwards off the tree stump and into the bushes below. After pulling myself out, I realized that the red bandana I was wearing during the meditation session had attracted a Rufous Hummingbird in search of a flower to harvest. Such a tiny creature, 3.5 inches in size, remains the only bird to have knocked me to the ground. After the flower to flower migration from a winter in Mexico, we see the orange-red throated male Rufous arrive first on Haida Gwaii in March, followed by the female a few weeks later. A nest is built in a twig-fork of a lower branch. The cup of soft cottony willow-seed is surrounded with moss bound with spider webs and then covered with lichen flakes to camouflage it. The 2 smooth eggs are incubated by the green backed female who sports a small dotted throat. The male Rufous defends the territory, driving away others from the feeder or flowers that feed their high energy requirements. The aerial flight display with curved dive, punctuated by a vip, and an abrupt slowdown on
the assent is something to see. The male leaves the Islands first harvesting nectar from high elevation late-blooming flowers. The female and young follow south in August. In Haida legends, the Hummingbird brings joy and healing. We are still blessed with this energy every year. I recall stopping on a forest path to witness a Hummingbird washing in a small stream. Bathed in sunlight, rainbow water droplets splashing, iridescent feathers whirring, it was a beautiful moment to behold. The photos in this article of Feathers & Wings are from a Community Futures Haida Gwaii mural I have just finished in collaboration with Artist Dejah Busch for Queen Charlotte. It continues the bird theme from the mural in Masset with the Hummingbird representing the Community of QCC. It will be installed at the end of August on the wall of Funk It.

The Skidegate Landing Oilery and Cannery A look at the industrious evolution of a small community By Pete Moore
Although it is now most commonly viewed as simply the location of the BC Ferries terminal, Skidegate Landing has a history that stands as a microcosm of Haida Gwaii’s evolution. Once an active Haida village site, remnants of human activity have been found on the area’s beaches, and are now on display in the Haida Gwaii Museum. The museum archives shows another side of Skidegate Landing: the post-contact industrious hub that it was in the early 1900’s.
Dated around 1907, these photos show the community in a state of economic boom. Although the landscape is distinctly recognizable to anybody that has taken the ferry to Skidegate Landing, it is the dense community extending into the water that is an unfamiliar sight. In the image above, the oilery, which was used to process oil from dogfish livers, is the long building on the left. The building served as a port as well, and was eventually converted into a clam cannery. With these exporting businesses, Skidegate Landing solidified itself as an entry point to the southern communities on Haida Gwaii.
Construction of the landing for the Kwuna began around 1975, and so the transition to the Skidegate Landing that we know today began. These photos are courtesy of the Haida Gwaii Museum. They are located on 2nd Beach Road in Skidegate and are open every day from 10am-6pm. For more information call 250-559-4643 or check them out at: facebook.com/haidagwaiimuseum

Rabies: A Preventative Protocol By Shellene Van der Beke
According to HealthLinkBC “Rabies [formerly known as hydrophobia] is a very serious and usually fatal disease caused by one of a number of rabies viruses. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal that may have rabies, or seems sick and behaves strangely, it is crucial to begin preventative treatment for rabies as soon as possible. This includes washing the wound well and seeking medical care.” Although any mammal – wild or domestic - can be infected by the rabies virus, in BC, bats are the only species known to carry this disease. As we have bats on Haida Gwaii, it is important for each of us to know how to handle them and who to call if we need help or more information. Long time, local Veterinarian, Dr. Don Richardson, who started his practice in Tlell in 1980, reports that there is no need to panic, that Haida Gwaii has never had a case of any kind of rabies, but, there is ample need to be aware of the risk. “Historically, the closest we have ever identified a case of Rabies was in a bat, in Williams Lake, in 1976,” states Dr. Don,” but recently, three rabid bats have been identified between Haida Gwaii and Prince George. This changes the perceived risk.”
Dr. Don used to advise his clients not to bother vaccinating their animals for rabies until they went camping past Prince George, but, with this recent increase in rabies reported in northern BC, he and his fellow Veterinarian and Son, Dr. Dane Richardson, are now advising all animals at risk get vaccinated. What makes any animal at risk? Any animal that may bite or be bitten by a bat. That is, all your dogs and cats which are allowed outside your home on Haida Gwaii. Animal Vaccination To add a rabies immunization to your pet’s next visit to the HG Animal Hospital, the added cost is $20. Well worth the peace of mind it brings. This first rabies vaccination, given to cats and dogs, lasts for one year and then the 2nd booster lasts for three years. Handing Bats It is highly recommended that you do not handle bats. If for some reason you do, be sure to pick it up with a shovel or inverted plastic bag while wearing disposable gloves. Put it in a plastic bag. Put this bag in a second plastic bag, seal it tight. If there has been any possible animal or human exposure to the bat, it should then be taken to either your local veterinarian or a public health official so the bat can be tested for the rabies virus. If there is no risk to animals or humans, the bat can be buried, several feet deep, where it will not be disturbed. Afterwards, dispose of the gloves, and wash your hands well with soap and water. Bottom line: People are exposed to bats on Haida Gwaii. Don’t handle bats. Vaccinate your pets. When in doubt, call an expert.

Reading on the Rock Pokemon Craze hits Haida Gwaii Queen Charlotte library branch a hot spot
Pokemon Go arrived on Haida Gwaii a few weeks ago, with one Pokestop in Masset, two in Sandspit, one at the Kaay Centre, and five in Queen Charlotte. (Let us know if you have found another one!) Local players have been collecting virtual capture gear and first aid for the GPS-generated creatures at all these spots on mobile phones. The little monsters themselves can show up anywhere, though they tend to prefer public areas like intersections, parks, docks and stores. At the moment, the only two “gyms”, or fighting arenas for the captured critters, are both located in Queen Charlotte. The Vancouver Island Regional Library has applied to Niantic, Pokemon’s parent company, to have gyms placed at or near its Sandspit and Masset branches. Stay tuned for news about that. (Sorry Port—we must wait for you to get cell phone coverage.) Pokemon fans in rural locations are facing a few challenges. Besides dealing with low numbers of Pokemon virtual resources, rural players are facing issues with the preponderance of the blue team, known as Mystics. They currently occupy both gyms, and cannot be dislodged by members of the same team. Most people here have chosen to be Mystics, along with 43% of the rest of the world. So that has brought the fighting action to a temporary standstill,
until Team Red (Valor) or Yellow (Instinct) develop fighters strong enough to overturn the current rulers, or gain enough team members to gang up on a gym. But it can still be fun to catch Pokemon, and the Queen Charlotte Branch will be offering “lure parties”, or enriched spawning grounds, at the Pokestop just outside its door every once in a while to even the odds of ending the impasse. Look for our posters, and join Team Red or Yellow if you are just starting out!
VOPC Book Club’s Garden Party By T.M. Ooishi The romance of summer and garden parties filled the air at the latest VOPC book club meeting. Our members discussed “The Forgotten Garden” by Kate Morton and many of us actually finished this book for a change. It was an enjoyable, light and great summer read. Although most members liked the book some members found the characters one dimensional, under developed and some of the elements a bit contrived. For our next book club meeting we are changing it up a bit. We are choosing a theme “oceans” and each member can choose their own book (based on the theme) which will then be discussed at our next meeting, on August 29th at 7:00pm in the Port Clements Senior Room. If you have any questions or would like to join the book club please contact Tina through email at tina.ooishi@gmail.com.

Clements
Lorette Smillie is a professional Interior Designer by trade who has an affinity for island living. Previously from Duncan, B.C. on Vancouver Island, Lorette moved to Haida Gwaii over a decade ago for a change of pace and to pursue new adventures. Having owned a bed and breakfast before, Lorette looked for a house with B & B potential and located one through a friend that seemed to be perfect. Being a B & B operator was a natural career choice for Lorette who loved to decorate but didn’t want to keep her designs to herself. Sharing them with others through entertaining and hosting seemed to be a perfect way to do this. Few things give her more satisfaction in her work than hearing her guests comment on how beautiful their rooms are and how much they love the Masset Inlet property that houses Smillie’s B & B. Lorette tells us that “It has been another stellar year at Smillie’s. Many of our guests have shared their wonder and excitement at having finally visited Haida Gwaii after years of wanting to do so.” She adds that programs like Love Haida Gwaii have made it possible for local businesses to be promoted online and discovered by those planning to visit Haida Gwaii.
Smillie’s B&B is located in Port Clements at 97 Bayview Dr. Contact them by phone at (250) 557-4614 or check out their website at www.gosmillie.com “Lorette & Don, you have made our visit the best ever! How Important are Haida Gwaii’s
Pollinators? Below is an interview between HG Trader editor Shellene Van der Beke and Terri-Lynne Penner, owner and operator of Honey and Hair Haida Gwaii; high quality honey and bee products & 25 years hair care experience. Terri-Lynne can be reached at 250-557-8522 or email emailfortlc@gmail.com. The two discuss Haida Gwaii’s pollinators, and the integral role they play in the stability of our island’s fragile ecosystem.
Who, or what, are Pollinators? Pollinators are any force that transfers pollen plant to plant. They can be insects, mammals, or even the wind. Some, like a honeybee, will go flower to flower of the same species while others take pollen from flower to flower but not necessarily the same flower. This is why honeybees and bumblebees are very efficient pollinators for the agriculture industry. What do you think is important about pollinators? More than one of every three bites of food we eat or beverages we drink are directly because of pollinators. Indirectly, pollinators ultimately play a role in the majority of what we eat and consume. The pollinator population of an area is a great indicator of the overall health of an ecosystem. Some crops, including blueberries and cherries, are 90 percent dependent on honey bee pollination.
Are there any specific challenges that pollinators are facing on Haida Gwaii? Domesticated honeybees are not well suited to the islands due to humidity making it difficult for them to dry their honey for winter. This environmental factor puts them at risk of not surviving the winter. Most insect pollinators leave a nest with eggs or “brood” for the winter, which survive quite well, and the insect’s life cycle is complete. However, the biggest challenge to pollinators on island, and in the rest of the planet, is pesticides! Please be very careful about using pesticides in your yards and gardens. Pesticides absorb into your veggies and then you will also consume these products even after washing. For pollinators, it gets into their body system. They either die shortly after being in contact with a pesticide or they take it back to the nest and young where their immune systems will be compromised. This is known as the “Great Bee Die-Off ”. What can a person do to help preserve and encourage healthy populations of pollinators on Haida Gwaii? You can make a positive difference in your home environment. Provide a diverse assortment of flowering plants and encourage native species in your landscape. Use pesticides only when necessary and then only late in the day or evening. Look for alternative ways to deal with pest and disease issues before reaching for a quick fix. These often come at a price. Leave the spring dandilions to bloom as this is often the first food for pollinators. Leave the leaves on the lawn in fall/winter so the insects and other flying pollinators have a place to leave the new generation.
What are the pollinators in this area? Butterflies, birds, beetles, bats, and wasps are important in the pollination process. The hover fly, black fly, mason bee and even mosquitoes and noseeums are also natural pollinators of the islands. “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.” - Albert Einstein

traditional knowledge along with modern-day science and good old common sense are exponentially shifting society’s way of thinking…and, even better, its way of acting.
Moving Past Names The title of this ongoing article about material and social sustainability was originally “Planetary Management” and then, to make it more local, it was changed to “Social Sustainability on Haida Gwaii”. The challenge with conceptual language is that some folks say “tomayto” and other folks say “tomahto”. So, in an attempt to avoid being lumped into some sort of clique ideology, it was decided to change the name (we hope this one is the last)…to something that is generic enough that the name does not encumber the message. “Till the Cows Come Home” was chosen as it is synonymous with words like “in perpetuity”, “for always”, “for keeps”, “lastingly”, “on and on”, etc. The focus of this article relates to any idea or action that supports long term unity, peace, compassion, equity, trust, kindness, adaptability, resilience, teamwork, honesty or civility, to name only a few. Really, it’s anything that supports a thriving existence for generations to come. Whether it be clean water to drink or freedom to express oneself…may all enjoy the freedoms of life and liberty…’till the cows come home. “Greenies, environmentalists, granola-crunchers, naturalists and tree-huggers.” Not too long ago, folks tagged with these stereotypes were seen as just a passing phase of resource-rescuing radicals. Not anymore. A growing reverence for
For survival’s sake, the indulgences and shortsightedness of the past 200 years of industrialization and capitalism are being replaced with the sensibilities of returning to, respecting and preserving our land, air and water. The term “environmental sustainability” has moved far beyond the “reduce-reuserecycle” axiom. Today, people and their communities are embracing both material and social sustainability. Whether it be harvesting and growing food locally, transitioning to cleaner and more renewable energy sources or learning to work together, no matter what our race, gender or age is, we are starting to truly see ourselves and everyone around us as essential parts of the larger whole. No matter what names or terminology we use, win-win thinking, strategies, alliances and business models are undeniable keys to our passing on a world where our children will not only survive, but thrive.

Horoscopes for Aug 15th to Sept 15th, 2016 Aries (March 20-April 19) You may be feeling like your energy is a little stalled out, dear Aries. In reality, it’s not. You just need to take that passion of yours and give it some direction, give it a path to run on, give it some navigation to travel to. This may seem challenging but the benefits of planning now are vital to the positive outcome you hope to attain. Key Words: Plan, Articulate, Structure
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22 When I say you have a lot of energy these days, dear Scorpio, this is an understatement! Just be sure that you are focusing yourself, otherwise you may find yourself misplacing objects and ideas, as you are flying at the speed of sound. What is your true mission in life? Answer this and focus your energy there. Key Words: Career, Communication, Compassion
Taurus (April 19-May 20) Try not to over-think every issue now, dear Taurus. Some challenges are meant to be dealt with by putting your head down and doing the necessary work to accomplish them. Yes, it’s easy to get sidetracked into believing that with ingenuity and creativity, you can out-think the problem, but honestly in the next few weeks, you just need to follow the task to the finish line. You’re very good at followthrough, so do this! Key Words: Organize, Networking, Perseverance
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) In order for a Sagittarius to feel at home, there needs to be a level of learning and loving all people, all cultures and all the world. This is a time when traveling is right up your alley. This doesn’t mean you need to book a trip to Laos immediately, but at the very least you should take yourself to that Thai restaurant down the street. Your psyche needs to experience the multi-cultural experience, however you can do this within your lifestyle. Key Words: Open-Minded, Open-hearted, OpenEnded
Gemini (May 20-June 21) Break out of your cocoon now, dearest Gemini. Yes, it’s good to periodically take a break, but now is your time to creatively shine. What qualities in your life bring you joy and happiness? How have you been ignoring these traits for practicality purposes? Ask yourself these questions and whatever answers you come up with are worth paying attention to. The way for you to engage with life is through art, recreation and play. Key Words: Recreate, Love, Passion
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) What may bubble to the surface now, dearest Capricorn, is a level of deep understanding that you were not ready to see until now. You have the tools to dive into the depths of reality and you may wonder if you have enough courage to do so. I am here to give you a hearty YES! In fact, when you deeply understand the issues at hand, you will realize that this is your path forward with wisdom. Enjoy the ride! Key Words: Structure, Passion, Purpose
Cancer (June 21-July 22) Sometimes life seems like a lot to swallow, doesn’t it dear Cancer? It’s easy for you to hole up at home and re-group. And this is exactly what you are going to feel like doing in the next couple of weeks. You may feel confused about the direction to take and it’s appropriate now to step back, breathe in the world and wait. Wait to receive a vision about how to proceed. Just don’t become paralyzed so that when it’s time to move, you won’t be ready. Briefly recharge your battery, then make a plan and jump! Key Words: Motivate, Reflect, Feel Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Build your confidence now, dear Leo. You, of all people, know what you need to do this. Something has presented itself in a way that has left you feeling insecure. Maybe it relates to your finances, maybe not. Either way, you have the means to rise above this and realize that you are in a position to shine as long as you know this deep down in your soul. Give yourself a talking to! It’s obvious, that you’ve got this! Key Words: Meditate, Relax, Reassess
20
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) I’m sorry if it feels a bit confusing right now, dearest Libra. It won’t last forever. You’ve come to the end of a cycle and it’s time to evaluate it. What has worked in your life and what needs work? If you really look at the issue in detail, you will see that many things are working. Get clear with the one or two things that aren’t working and adjust accordingly. You will have the time to reflect on this in the next few weeks, so don’t waste it. Key Words: Aspirations, Creative, Believe
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) You are in the final phase of enlightenment, dearest Virgo. I don’t mean you are near the energy of the Dalai Lama, only that you have been attempting to receive a vision for your future. It is right there for your taking, as long as you have been quiet enough to hear it. Very soon, something in your life will be in the forefront and you may wonder, how did I get here? That’s how downloads work. One day, you wake up in the morning and you just know what to do. Get ready! Key Words: Determination, Realization, Arise!
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) What’s love got to do with it, dearest Aquarius? For you in the upcoming weeks, plenty! In order to continue on your path, you require the help, ideas and physical presence of other people. You cannot do it alone without experiencing roadblocks. I know that sometimes you can be the loner Aquarius, but for now, please except the help and caring of others. Key Words: Connection, Networking, Friendship .
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) There’s a quandary going on in your mind. It goes something like this: I want to finally be able to do my own thing but I also want to please others. How do you do both? This is the key question for you now, dearest Pisces. I suggest that it’s time to put yourself first. This is not something that you do easily or often so when you get the opportunity, take it! You deserve to do what pleases you and your loved ones may appreciate you taking a stand, you never know. HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT Haida Gwaii’s Farmers’ Markets: A Growing Concern! More and more people are realizing that access to and availability of local food contributes greatly towards a happy and healthy life here on Haida Gwaii. With appreciation expanding, backyard and small farming products are now very much in demand at the local Farmers’ Markets. Vendors at the Queen Charlotte Farmers’ Market tell us that the market has never been so busy since it began in 1988. We’re hearing similar stories from the Masset, Tlell and Sandspit Markets - more vendors, more customers, and more visitors – they are truly flourishing!
What’s in season? Ya gotta love this time of the year! New potatoes, peas, beans, cukes, tomatoes, salad fixins’ and more! Thoughts of tomatoes with fresh lettuce, cheese spreads, and locally processed bacon slices all piled up on fresh, homemade (gluten and/or grain free if you prefer it) bread, dance through one’s head. Are you starting your shopping list? You won’t even need to go home to make lunch, there’ll be savory hot meals, coffee and baked goods too. Fill those ‘Haida Gwaii Local Food’ shopping bags with
eggs, bread, cheese and in-season produce. You’ll want to visit the artisan displays for gift and souvenir ideas, as well.
What’s new for local food? Masset is increasing awareness of its Friday markets with new signage (3 sandwich boards which are put up around town every Friday), a banner and a vendor’s tent with the Masset Market logo on it. They’re looking good. Over thirty households in Queen Charlotte and Skidegate are participating in Lynda Dixon’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Bag-a-Week program. Miranda Barnhardt and her Riverworks Farm CSA program is also full steam ahead! Local restaurants and grocery stores are supporting our food producers and processors with regular orders. If you can’t make the markets, look for the ‘Haida Gwaii Local Food’ signs and labels at HG Co-op stores, Bayview Market and Isabel Creek. The Queen Charlotte Farmers Market operated year round this past year (with a couple of weeks off for Christmas and New Year’s). Way to go! Many thanks to the vendors and customers, who have made this a successful year for the Farmers’ Markets. Let’s keep the local food “growth” momentum going!
