TOW HILL ROAD

FOREVER Dear Haida Gwaii residents, past, present, and future.

Submitted by Rich Schultz

Dear Haida Gwaii residents, past, present, and future. I am certain that all concerned will agree that Tow Hill Road is a major tourist attraction. This needs to be repeated – Tow Hill Road is a major tourist attraction and has been for the last 30 years, or since tourists first started coming to the island. This statement is past all debate or argument and is a fact. Many islanders make a living, one way or another, off of the tourist industry. I have been renting cabins to tourists for about 35 years. I actually personally talk to them and can say with absolute certainty that they all love the Tow Hill Road experience. Never have I been told that the road needs improvement or widening or more speed. It is the experience of driving through a virgin old-growth rainforest with moss and dappled sunlight that inspires literally thousands of photographs yearly by the hundreds of tourists who drive the road. That said, every few years there is a threat to this jewel in the Haida Gwaii crown. And each time this happens, there is discord, and tempers heat.

I believe strongly the way to solve this ongoing problem is to designate Tow Hill Road a heritage road and thus inviolate to change. There are heritage houses and heritage parks... no reason not to include a heritage road in this list. If anyone can

show that there is a more beautiful or unique road in Canada or anywhere else, I will eat my hat – brim and all.

The road was evaluated some years ago by the Dept. of Highways and deemed safe for cars to pass anywhere on the road, so that is a non-issue. From my contact in the Ministry of Transportation, I’m told that this is possible, even simple. His, and my, suggestions are to: 1. Contact our MLA Jennifer Rice to start the ball rolling; she will know who to speak to and why. 2. Contact the Parks Dept. to get on board as it is in their jurisdiction and mandate. 3. Have all city mayors state their support for this designation. 4. Bring public support (via letters, etc.), as well as petitions to our MLA to show general popular support. 5. Ensure all of this same information and support be sent to the proper persons in the Dept. of Tourism, BC, and even Tourism Canada. Let’s start there, and let’s preserve this beauty for our children and grand-children’s children. Tow Hill Road Forever!

Grief:

A Threshold We are over the hump! Daylight teases us with a few seconds more light each week. Spring is coming! But for those who feel the deep loss of a loved one, a marriage, a job or good health, the promise of spring can pale in comparison to the dark well of sorrow in which they find themselves.

the floor, afraid I would break into pieces or go crazy. But no. Soon, the sobbing stopped. I was emptied out, peaceful and ready to handle the day. If we suppress or numb out our sadness, anger, or fear, we also numb out our joy, hope and compassion.

Grief and loss will touch us all. But it is very hard for us to feel and express our grief and vulnerability in our western, death-phobic culture that says, “Get over it and get back to normal.”

Another condition is to express grief creatively. Draw, dance and write it. Sing/howl your story to the forest or the ocean.

There is no getting back to normal, because that former life is gone. Loss and grief takes us into completely new territorybetween what was and the new life that is yet to unfold. It can be scary and lonely to feel so disoriented. The options for navigating this new land are sadly, few. Many of us suffer alone, in silence. We may numb out with TV, video games, social media, work, alcohol and drugs, food or shopping.

“The main thing is welcome grief. Give it a place in your life... It doesn’t need to be depressing”, said Weller. “We are most alive at the threshold between loss and revelation” of the new person we are becoming.

“But all emotions have vitality to them and that is our work – to feel them and be alive”. This is the guidance offered by psychotherapist Frances Weller in his book, “The Wild Edge of Sorrow”. He says, “Grief is not a problem to be solved but... an essential experience of being human”. He adds that the real problem is when we don’t have the conditions needed to help us work with our grief. So what conditions are needed? Time for one. Ancient cultures supported the grieving person to withdraw from a normal, productive life and dedicate a year to their grieving journey. So give yourself the time and space you need. Community is another condition. We need our family and friends to listen to our stories, to make it safe for us to feel and express our deepest emotions. One friend who lost her sister recently said, “The best thing someone can say to me is ‘Tell me about your sister!’ ”

Finally, get professional support if you need it.

We need to cry and know our tears are not a sign of weakness, but a natural release. I remember in the early days of my divorce many years ago, I would drive my children to school and then return home, sometimes finding myself sobbing on

Golden-Crowned Kinglet

A pocket of mediumsized hemlock and spruce around the garden are still standing due in part to the Golden-crowned Kinglet. It seems that each time I stand in front of the trees and contemplate cutting them down to provide a little more light, I hear the birds approaching. Calls of “tsee tsee tsee” announce their presence as they flit and hover in an acrobatic style while searching for spiders or flies in a very focused manner. Often accompanied by Chestnut-backed Chickadees, these groups of very small birds change my perspective from “green objects in the way” to one of seeing them as an integral part of the ecosystem of one of my favorite birds.

It is difficult to say why I find the Kinglet so endearing. Perhaps it is the delicate purr of their soft wings in juxtaposition with the spiky spruce; the beautiful vibrant golden-orange crowns outlined with black, like a tiny fire burning amongst the olivegrey feathers and foliage; or is it imagining their nest (built by the female) of deep thick moss and lichen, bound with spider webs, lined with fine rootlets and feathers, suspended under the tip of a spruce branch 60’ above the ground. They certainly are symbols of a healthy forest. Multidisciplinary artist Thomas Arnatt specializes in murals inspired by birds, nature & meditation. Presenting Janice Tanton

Full time Human Being and this year’s All Islands’ Art Show Adjudicator by Jamie Mcdonald, Coordinator of the 2017 AIAS The All Islands’ Art Show (AIAS) is an annual event showcasing artists of Haida Gwaii working in a variety of media. The adjudicated show is held in the Temporary Exhibit space at the Heritage Centre, from March 10th to April 8th.

Every year, a professional artist is selected to present their work, facilitate a workshop and adjudicate the art. This year, Janice Tanton was chosen for this role. Janice is an interdisciplinary artist, with a focus on painting. She is no stranger to Haida Gwaii, having participated in the Gwaii Haanas Artist in Residency program in 2012. At the time, a serious illness cut her time here short. With her health recovered, she is eager to return to Haida Gwaii: “I do consider Haida Gwaii very much my second home and would really love to serve its artists and communities”. Following her residency here, she established several scholarships at the Banff Centre for interested Haida leaders to participate in the Indigenous Leadership programs. As an artist in residence at the Banff Centre, she is currently working on a painting project designed to confront racism and foster intra-cultural relationships. For information, visit www.janicetanton.ca/ On April 1st, Janice will be facilitating a full day Egg Tempera workshop. This painting technique has been used for centuries and is most often identified with the work of Andrew Wyeth and older religious iconography works. Egg tempera paint consists of three ingredients: pigment, egg yolk and water. If done right, the final product has jewel-like, durable qualities that last through the ages. Interested in learning more? Register for the workshop, where you can explore the broad range of artistic possibilities of this handy, luminous medium. For more information on the show, presentation and workshop, visit www.hgartscouncil.ca/all-island-artshow/

“This comic is based on a true story. This very thing almost happened to me when I was doing a locum in Squamish, many moons ago. Luckily there were two sets of sliding doors and the quick-witted nurse locked the inner ones just in time, before the young, curious bear could pull out its Care Card...!”

T

he Collinson family are no strangers to the basketball court. Their athletic builds, high spirits and their keen interest make them quintessential sports enthusiasts. Natasha Collinson played basketball in her youth and is now coaching and assisting the Skidegate Saints Jr. Girls team in their drive towards the championships at the Jr. All Native in Kelowna this March. Collinson is no stranger to sitting on the basketball sidelines supporting her family in their hoop dreams. Tymeko, nine, has shown interest in playing and can be seen practicing alongside her sisters and family, and Lakye, six, loves to practice her dribbling. Natasha’s son Jhett has been playing since he was 10 years but is currently recovering from an injury and husband Wade, has been playing basketball for over 30 years and today is coaching the Jr. Girls team. “We are probably here practicing five or six times a week for two hours at a time once basketball season starts,” says Natasha. The Skidegate Saints Jr. Girls are on the court pounding lay-up drills and Collinson stresses the importance of preventing injury during practice and games. “Make sure you warm up your body by running or riding the bike,” she reminds the team, adding that their warmups are usually followed by stretching for 10-15 minutes. Collison is diligent in making sure the young players don’t get injured.

8

“Even landing right” is important Natasha Collinson stresses as injuries to the knees, ACL, MCL and meniscus, and ankles can be prevented by practicing jumps and landing properly. Landing softly is a learned skill and always something to be mindful of while in the heat of the game, along with the other skills needed to play safely while on the hardwood. Watching Zoey Collinson practice with the team you notice how she is always smiling and talking with her fellow team mates. She is not unlike the others but you do see how leadership follows her on the court whether she is running a drill or passing the ball to her team mates. Zoey Collinson has been playing basketball since she was eight. Now at 12, she says playing with the Skidegate Saints Jr. Girls team “is fun” and that she gets to develop close relationships with her team mates, some who are her best friends; Stacey Edinger, Kalei McDonald and Ryleigh Brennan. Zoey’s skill set is such that she tried out for a place on Team BC’s basketball team this past December. This is her first time trying out and she learned the bittersweet reality of winning and losing in competitive sports. “It was fun because I got to meet new people,” in Kamloops at the Thompson Rivers University gymnasium. But it was also “nerve wracking” she says, because “I didn’t want to get cut”. Zoey Collinson; a Skidegate Saints Jr. Girls point guard, was chosen in round one of province wide try outs to play for Team BC. As point guard, she is responsible for running the ball up the court for the team. Zoey smiles widely and her eyes shine brightly when asked about her new team membership and says she is “excited to play” at the provincial level. As part of Team BC, Zoey will be heading to the North American Indigenous Games in Toronto, Ontario from July 16-23, 2017. Her experience so far has taught her to “work with others” and also to acknowledge that “I won’t always win”, and “to be prepared” for all situations. “I’m really excited about going to the North American Indigenous Games,” exclaims Zoey ‘The Beast’ Collinson, beaming as her eyes dart towards the practice on court and like a released caged animal she bounds back to the court when the interview is concluded.

Haida Gwaii Radio Society

The clan tournament was only the beginning By Pete Moore

James McGuire, Daniel McNeil, and Cal Westbrook The weekend of January 19th to the 21st was the 17th annual Clan Tournament in Skidegate, a weekend of basketball in which Haida clans from all over the island form teams and compete. The tournament was jam-packed with thrilling action with the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals all coming down to just a few points. The finals between Skedans-Yahgujaanaas and Ts’aahl had the audience on the edge of its seat until the last moments of the game, which saw Skedans-Yahgujaanaas pulling ahead to beat Ts’aahl. The atmosphere in the George Brown Recreation Centre (GBRC) was ecstatic, and a thrill to be a part of. Luckily, for the first time ever, even those who were not in the gym could be a part of the atmosphere thanks to an audio live stream that broadcast the games all weekend. The idea for the stream came from volunteer James McGuire. Players from the tournament called the play by play and analysis with a professional flair. All of this was thanks to the newly formed Haida Gwaii Radio Society, which officially formed just a week prior to the event.

“We had met as a group on and off over the last two years, but found the momentum and desire in the last six months to actively move forward with the project,” says Ryan Barber. Barber has been spearheading the radio initiative, alongside a few other directors. The board of directors is intentionally small at this time to “bootstrap the process,” says Barber. The primary objective behind the Radio Society is to unite the communities across the island through a shared radio station. “I have always felt a lack of awareness about (and connection with) other communities on the islands and I believe radio is the right medium to bridge this gap,” says Barber. The clan tournament was an early example of this, as the stream allowed people all over Haida Gwaii (and beyond) to tune into the games as if they were right there in the GBRC. Although this was the society’s first big event, Barber assures that they will continue moving at full force. “The clan tournament was an absolute blast and we’re looking forward to more basketball games, and maybe a few softball games if we can find some enthusiastic announcers,” he says. The society has also begun broadcasting the monthly Haida Gwaii Coffee House in Queen Charlotte. To make this happen, the Haida Gwaii Radio Society is going to need the support of the communities and enthusiastic volunteers. In order to create a station run by the people of Haida Gwaii, the society is always looking for more keeners to get involved. “We’re dreaming of getting some scheduled shows running: surf report from North Beach, weekly Haida language from SHIP, some evenings of music, mornings of yoga over the radio? Right now, the possibilities are endless.”

Daniel McNeil and Duane Alsop

The Skidegate Brass Band A different case of music on Haida Gwaii By Pete Moore

Music is one of the most profound aspects of Haida culture. Drums, rattles, and boxes, as well as the voices of the singers, have carried the spirit and power of music through Haida culture for centuries. However, Haida music has evolved over time and has not been limited to these; one of the earliest examples of this was the Skidegate Brass Band. Formed in the early 1900’s by Haida William H. Russ, the Skidegate Brass Band was one of the many brass bands among BC First Nations during that time. Skidegate had at least 2, but the standout was the Skidegate Concert Band, that had 3 consecutive victories at the Gray Cup, a competition of First Nations teams in Prince Rupert much like the All Native Basketball Tournament. One of the brass band’s trophies can still be spotted in the trophy case at the

George Brown Recreation Centre. On the team were many family names still present in Skidegate’s population today. To help propel the band to this level was their band master Arthur Solomon, who was originally from Victoria. He gained quite the reputation and caused a fair amount of controversy during his time in Skidegate. At the 1913 Royal Commission, Solomon’s residency was brought into question as a result. This was a serious issue because it would compromise Skidegate chances as a band at the tournaments in Prince Rupert. During this time - the Victorian Period - brass band orchestral music was seen as high art. Although implemented with a colonial intention, these bands were truly celebrated and enjoyed by most everyone. The Skidegate Brass Band is a modern piece of musical history on Haida Gwaii, and is a testament to their musical proficiency.

Venison Chili

with Asiago, Jalapeño Cornbread One of the first things you learn while living as a local on Haida Gwaii is about the abundance of food available to us. A favorite to most locals is the Sitka Black-Tailed Deer. Hunting is huge on Haida Gwaii. Hunters come to the Island from everywhere to shoot the tasty venison. In fact, the deer were introduced to the Island in the 1890s for sport hunting as well as for their excellent food source. Due to the absence of wolves on the Island, the deer became abundant. Not only is the lean venison tasty and versatile, it can be incorporated into just about any dish that involves meat. To me, the trick to cooking this lean meat is not to overcook it.

I treat it like any lean meat, adding seasonings and marinades before cooking. Since the meat is so lean, it can taste dry if it’s overdone. In addition, you can create extra flavor by adding other fats to your dishes. I’m cooking my chili in one of my favorite cast iron pans. I like the cast iron because it allows me to add cornbread to the top of my chili and then I can transfer the whole pan to the oven in order to cook the cornbread. Add the cornbread after the chili has cooked on your stove top for at least I hour and then transfer it to the oven until the cornbread is fully cooked (it will be a light golden color).

Chili Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil; 4 strips of bacon, sliced; 1 to 2 pounds of ground deer meat; 1 onion; 3 garlic cloves; 2 stocks of celery; 2 carrots; 2 green chilies; 1 can of canned tomatoes; 1 can tomato paste; 3 cans of beans, mixed (I like to use kidney, baked brown and black); 1/4 cup red wine; 2 tablespoons chili powder; 2 teaspoons cumin; 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1/2 teaspoon pepper; 1 bay leaf Chili Directions: On medium heat, add the olive oil to your saucepan, add the bacon, and saute until browned. Add the chopped onion and cook until tender. Add the minced garlic. Cook 1 minute. Add the ground deer meat and cook just long enough to get a little color to the meat. Add the veggies and saute until tender, about 2 minutes. Push meat and veggies aside and add the tomato paste in one area, cook for a few minutes and then mix with your veggies. This is when I like to add the spices: bay leaf, cumin, chili powder, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Add 1/4 cup of red wine and reduce to half. Add the canned tomatoes and beans. Let your chili cook for about 1 hour. For the cornbread, preheat your oven to 375°F. Cornbread Ingredient: 1/2 cup flour; 2 tablespoons sugar; 1/2 cup cornmeal (fine ground); 1/4 cup wheat germ; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1 teaspoon baking powder; 1/2 teaspoon baking soda; 2/3 cup buttermilk; 1/4 cup vegetable oil; 1 large egg; 1 cup grated Asiago cheese; 1 chopped fresh Jalapeño Cornbread Directions: Mix all dry ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Mix buttermilk, vegetable oil and the egg together in a small bowl. Mix and then add to the dry ingredients. Add cheese and the chopped Jalapeño. Mix until combined. Place large spoonfuls of the cornbread mixture around your chili. Place in the oven and cook for about 20-25 minutes.

SHARING LOCAL FOOD STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Food security is a hot topic these days. More and more, islanders are talking and thinking about our food – asking questions about where it comes from, how nutritious it is, and how to prepare it. Making use of local food instead of processed items shipped from the mainland benefits our health and is building connections between school students, other community members, and food providers. Just a generation ago, it was common for schools to serve boiled hot dogs in white buns for a “special” lunch. Today, schools are serving their students regular meals of locally-caught and preserved foods like salmon and halibut, or carrots and chanterelles. Local food banks are distributing meat and vegetables from Haida Gwaii, and adult day programs are serving seniors lunches made of local ingredients. Many organizations and people have been working through a variety of programs to make the shift to local food possible. The Gwaii Trust recognizes that food security – making sure everyone in our community has access to healthy food – is a an important issue. Working with representatives from local food banks,

12

adult day programs, the Local Food to School programs, and others involved in this issue, we have committed significant funds to this area for the past several years, including $181,000 spent in 2016. For this year, 2017, we have set aside $185,000 for Food Security initiatives. Money from the Gwaii Trust has helped provide food for the north and south end food banks, school lunches, greenhouses and gardens, a soup kitchen, meals on wheels, and has helped hire pantry coordinators for both ends of the islands. The Local Foods Pantry program, for example, has been running for the past year and a half. This innovative project was developed by the Local Foods to School Program with funding from the Gwaii Trust and Northern Health. Pantry coordinators Sarah Stevenson and Jenn Dysart have been working with schools, young people, food harvesters, food teachers, elders, farmers and community organizations to support more eating, sharing and learning about local food. For example, at Sk’aadgaa Naay elementary, the south end pantry team worked with others to develop learning experiences for 40 students in kindergarten and grade 5, such as juicing and drying carrots; cleaning, sautéing and freezing chanterelles;

and baking pumpkin muffins. Yum! This program has also helped organize several field trips, giving students opportunities to learn first-hand about food harvesting and growing. Students from GidGalang Kuuyas Naay Secondary had the chance to check out Island Joe’s tomato greenhouses, travelled to Copper Bay to learn about salmon fishing and processing, and spent an afternoon near Kagan Bay picking chanterelles. At Gudangaay Tlaats’gaa Naay Secondary, students worked with Marina and David Jones and Old Massett to process and smoke chum, and helped dig out a garden of rhubarb plants. That’s not all. The Pantry Coordinators have helped with hot lunch programs at local schools, coordinated bulk purchases from farmers and wild food harvesters, processed and stored local food so it is available for public programs, helped seed gardens and greenhouses, and facilitated food processing workshops for members of the public. These exciting programs are continuing to develop and work towards a sustainable food system on Haida Gwaii. Sergius de Bucy

Kind, Wise, and 100 Years Young By Shellene Van der Beke

It was a beautiful sunny day in Queen Charlotte. While munching on homemade gingersnaps and surprisingly yummy frozen bananas, I had the honor of chatting with Haida Gwaii’s brand new centenarian, Sergius de Bucy. Yes indeed, on February 22nd, Sergius will be 100 years young. Astoundingly, for 96 of his 100 years (other than for a short Army leave) Sergius was raised, went to school, married, brought up his family, worked and is now retired right here on Haida Gwaii! In no time I realized I was speaking with a very kind, humble and happy soul. When asked about his life here on the islands, Sergius said, with a genuine smile and a twinkle in his eye, “I look upon everybody much the same”…words that support a happy life, for sure. Born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, Sergius was raised by his Mother, Sybil de Bucy, and in 1921 when

Sergius was just four years old, they moved to Tlell and onto her brother, Eric Richardson’s family farm, then and still known as Richardson Ranch. Sergius remembers milking cows and helping out in the garden. To be closer to where he could attend the little 8-10 student school, Sybil purchased a cabin for $75 in Skidegate Landing. She worked at various jobs to keep food on the table for her and her young son, one being the famous Hippa Island Bakery that she ran in 1925 with her friend and partner Mary Sinclair. Sergius and his Mom later moved to Lawn Hill where, together, they purchased and ran their own farm. He proudly remembers working the land with their two oxen Sambo and Moses. “If you didn’t work, you didn’t eat,” he recalls matter-of-factly. When asked for a positive memory from this time in his life, he fondly recalled the jazz-swing, dance music of The Harmony Boys big band orchestra. Made up of numerous talented, local musicians such as Fred Williams, his brother Lloyd

and six-foot three Jack Dempsey, they played instruments such as the piano, accordion, drums, saxophone, trumpet, violin, banjo and guitar. It was heartwarming music with plenty of hip-swaying, thigh-slapping and foot-stomping fun. In the early 40’s Sergius met and later married his wife of 28 years, Christina McKenzie. They had four children, Kathy, Wendy, Janice and Roger. Chris worked in the school, the library and helped with Sergius’ taxi business where he drove a bus (that looked like an ambulance) between Queen Charlotte and Port Clements. Sergius also operated a water taxi service to and from Sandspit. Chris’s brother, Stan McKenzie, partnered in business with Sergius over a span of more than 40 years doing many different things such as hand logging, hauling gravel and clearing land, to name only a few.

I asked Sergius if he had any favorite jokes and his response had me in tears. He said “There were two ladies in Port gossiping on the street. One said to the other ‘You know, those dang neighbors, they were so lazy they brought the toilet right into the house!’” Wait for it… Ha! Ha! Good one! (Back in the day, everyone had an outhouse!) Today, Sergius and his longtime sweetheart, retired Tahayghen schoolteacher Mavis Mark, enjoy nearly daily visits to their favorite coffee shop, Queen B’s, and admire ongoing seascape marvels from the view outside of their lovely waterfront home. Of course, I could not leave without asking for a few of Sergius’ words of wisdom. He was happy to oblige saying “Most problems in life are the ones you make yourself,” along with “We’re all in the same boat, let’s all row together.” Wise words indeed.

Sergius de Bucy’s 100th Birthday Open House! Wednesday, Feb. 22nd from 2-4pm at the Eric Ross Room located at the back of the QC Community Hall. Open to everyone who would like to drop by and wish Sergius a Happy Birthday! Come one! Come all!

LIVING & LEARNING Community-based learning on Haida Gwaii By Pete Moore

Raising a child on Haida Gwaii has its pros and cons. Unfortunately, staples of a Canadian childhood, such as pee wee hockey and Tim Horton’s hot chocolate, are not a shared experience for the born and raised Haida Gwaii kids. FORTUNATELY, put in place of these are things like growing up with a forest as your backyard, having your version of an I Spy book be the endless beaches, and getting to be a part of a small, but tightly knit and supportive community. The Living and Learning School, located in Queen Charlotte, fully embraces these opportunities that Haida Gwaii presents. “[The school] started as a group of parents who were homeschooling their children getting together and has evolved into what it is today,” explains Denise Husband, the Principal of the school and the teacher of the grades 8 and 9 classroom. The school formed over 20 years ago and has maintained a goal to thoroughly incorporate the community into their students’ learning. Now located on a piece of beachfront property, the Living and Learning School takes full advantage of their surroundings. “As much as we can, we focus our education around the outdoor environment, students have daily physical activities outdoors. I think we are most likely the only school on Haida Gwaii with a school set of hip waders and dip nets,” says Husband. The 2016/2017 year has seen some exciting growth for the chool. Erica Ryan-Gagne, who is currently enrolled in the UNBC Language Program, has been sharing her knowledge of the Haida language with the students. Harold Williams has also been contracted to offer a hands-on carpentry style workshop for interested students. The school has also expanded all of the way up to grade 9, and is working on publishing a book, called “Humans of Haida Gwaii”, for which the students are conducting interviews. A trip to Prince Rupert for the elementary students, a YMCA trip to Toronto for the senior students... the list goes on.

“Haida Gwaii is perhaps one of the most amazing places to be educated. Where else can you learn to harvest your food, interact with talented artists, learn Haida language directly from elders and participate in hands-on biology projects like project Limestone?” - Denise Husband

The Living and Learning School is funded partly by the Ministry of Education and is required to fully cover the regular curriculum that public schools do, but they aim to do so in a unique way that matches each and every student. “Some of the past students of the Living and Learning School are now parents and we are looking forward to welcoming a 2nd generation of children into our school in the next few years,” says Husband. “It is quite exciting to see where some of the Living and Learning alumni is today.” Photos are courtesy of L&L School staff Winnie Tsai (teacher) and Kamila Mlynczak (educational assistant). Wonderful Watercress Watercress, curly cress, upland cress and garden cress are the most common of the cresses but there are actually more that twenty varieties. They all taste remarkably similar with a delightful pleasant peppery zing to them. It is a member of the mustard family and is closely related to nasturtiums. There is proof that cress has been eaten for over three thousand years, but it probably was a dietary staple much earlier than that. Persians, Greeks and Romans, who were very fond of cress, attribute magical and medicinal properties to it. It was said to be an excellent hair tonic and a hangover cure. Served with vinegar it was thought to cure insanity. Eating cress is said to help you make good decisions. It was also used to keep Army’s strong and to cleanse the blood. The one thing that these ancients believed that cress is capable of that is proven legitimate is that it helped prevent and cure scurvy. Cress is a good source of calcium, potassium, manganese, vitamin A and C. A serving provides over 200% of your daily vitamin K requirement. If you are taking a blood

thinner and wish to eat cress it should be introduced slowly and carefully because of its high vitamin K content. Cress is very good in salads, sandwiches, wraps, soup, scrambled eggs, omelets and pasta sauce. During the 1st and 2nd world wars food was very limited in England. In those times supper often consisted of cress, vinegar and bread. When things improved after the wars, cress soup became popular and remains so to this day. Here is the recipe so you can try it yourself.

Watercress Soup 2 potatoes 2 onions 2 cloves garlic 2 cups chicken or veggie stock 1 bag of cress* Peel and roughly chop the potatoes, onions and garlic. Saute in a large saucepan until translucent. Add the stock and simmer until the potatoes are cooked. Chop and add the cress. Cook for a further three to four minutes. Blend until smooth. Serve with a dollop of sour cream in each bowl and a fresh warm bun or baking powder biscuit. * Available year round at the QC Farmers Market Pat Fricker has lived on these islands that she adores for over 30 years. She loves gardening, greenhousing, and cooking. She also enjoys the superior flavor of fresh fruit and veggies that are on the table shortly after picking.

Radical Self-Care Self-care? Hmph. “Wishy washy, hippy dippy buzzword,” some may scoff. “Bah…buck up, get over it, suck it up, don’t rock the boat, and come on now, take one for the team.” One may ask, “If I care for myself, won’t people call me selfish, or arrogant, or think I have a skewed sense of entitlement?” Well, yes, some will. But, let’s ask ourselves: might I be scheduling too many activities into my day to accommodate the needs of others? Do I give too much at the expense of myself? If your answer is even a partial yes, please read on. Brazilian lyricist and novelist Paulo Coelho says it well: “When you say ‘YES’ to others, make sure you are not saying ‘NO’ to yourself.” Nowadays, various forms of overload are becoming commonplace. The minds of men, women and even children are full of unnecessary clutter. People go on vacations only to find themselves more exhausted upon their return. Day to day stress, sleep disorders, forgetfulness and general feelings of being unwell are at an all-time high. OY. I’m starting to get stressed just writing about this. (As Editor of this magazine, stress and I hang out with each other frequently.) So, what is selfcare, let alone, radical self-care all about? In the book “The Art of Extreme Self-Care”, author Cheryl Richardson (worth ordering a copy from your local library) points out how stress in today’s world has become a strangely normal way of life and is actually defining people’s identity and self-worth. Being superwoman or superman has become the “noble” thing to be. OY times ten. (Now this is starting to hit very close to home.) “The practice of Extreme Self-Care forces us to make choices and decisions that honor and reflect the true nature of our soul. While the notion of this might seem selfish or self-centered, doing so actually allows us to make our greatest contributions to the world,” states Richardson. She continues with “By caring deeply for ourselves: • We naturally begin to care for others – our families, our friends, and the world – in a healthier and more effective way. • We tell the truth. • We make choices from a place of love and compassion instead of guilt and obligation. • We begin to understand – on a visceral level – that we’re all connected, and that our individual actions affect the greater whole in a more profound way than we ever imagined. So what does living a life of extreme or radical self-care look like? • Working in a soul-nurturing environment. • Developing a greater appreciation for, and connection with, nature. • Doing work that provides an opportunity to express your greatest gifts and talents. • Caring for your emotional, physical, and spiritual health in a way that’s aligned with who you are and what you most need.” Eloquently written and with many thought-provoking and action-inspiring exercises, “The Art of Extreme Self-Care” is a worthwhile read. Richardson is wise to note that, as with anything worth doing, self-care takes patience, commitment and practice but could very well be the greatest gift you give to yourself and the greatest gift you give to others.

HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT LOCAL, ORGANIC VEGGIES Delivered to your door!

Located in Skidegate Inlet, on Maude Island, where a year-round creek tumbles down the south-facing hillside, is the Maude Island Farm (MIF). Co-owner Lynda Dixon and her team take the responsibility of caring for their farm seriously; growing without chemical fertilizers and pesticides, rotating crops and protecting and building the soil with cover crops and more. Growing organic produce on Haida Gwaii since 1994, MIF became officially certified as organic in 2006. “The certification process is stringent and expensive,” reports Dixon, “requires a lot of paperwork, and involves bringing a verification officer to inspect the farm every three years.” Dixon fell in love with Maude Island the first time she saw it while kayaking in Skidegate Inlet in 1988. “Maude has an amazing amount of deep, black soil,” states Dixon. “A recent soil test indicated that it contains about 20% organic matter after 23 years of intensive market gardening. Many a farmer would be happy with 5%.” Famous for their sweet Maude Island carrots, they also grow salad greens, garlic, beets, potatoes and some herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. Most of their produce is sold through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), Bag-A-Week veggie delivery program which delivers a variety of seasonal veggies right to the customer’s door. CSA is a pay up front business model which helps farmers with the upfront costs of purchasing seeds and soil amendments. Customers get healthy, nutritious, delicious and local produce and farmers can pay for their expenses. A win-win for all! Maude Island Farm produce can be found at the QC Farmers’ Market on Saturdays between 11am-2pm, Isabel Creek and various restaurants and businesses. To sign up for their Bag-A-Week veggie delivery program, call them at 250-637-1609 or email l.brassica1960@gmail.com
