Proactive Solutions for Common Challenges

Elder Treasures

by Shellene Van der Beke

In March 2013, via Ted Talks, (www.ted.com) presentor Jared Diamond, a Professor at the University of California who is well versed in evolutionary biology, shared with the world his talk called “How Societies Can Grow Old Better.”

In his presentation, Mr. Diamond points out that traditional, small, tribal societies constituted all human societies for most of human history and that elders, in most of these societies, were the primary sources of knowledge unlike modern society’s considerable dependence on books and Google.

Two of my elder treasures, my Grandparents, Evelyn & Wallace Patience

Challenge: of our elders?

Elders in these traditional societies tended to live out their lives among their children, family and lifelong friends. They were valued members of the community and this resulted in stronger community bonds, more socially rich and self-confident children, better health, improved abilities to deal with danger and sharper skills to settle disputes. It is a known fact that elder knowledge was often the deciding factor between a society’s survival and its extinction.

How can our modern society better survive? What can we do that will best utilize the knowledge

Solutions (advocated by Jared Diamond):

 Grandparents for childcare. Compared to paid daycare, Grandparents offer superior, motivated and experienced childcare. They’ve already gained experience from raising their own children, they usually love their grandchildren and are eager to spend time with them.

 Capitalize on our elder’s survival experience. Only those people who are 70 or older can remember what it was like to live through a great depression or world war. Most of our voters and politicians have no personal experience of any of those things and if any similar-situations were to arise again, it is our elders who know how to survive.  Make use of things that older people are better at. While there are many things that our elders can no longer do, there are other things that they can do better than younger people. They have much more experience in understanding people and human relationships. They have a superior ability to help other people without their ego getting in the way. They are better at supervising, administering, advising, strategizing, teaching, synthesizing and devising long term plans.

Safe Communities/Haida Gwaii

Helpful crime prevention tips brought to you by your local RCMP Abusive or obscene phone calls: the best way to deal with an abusive or obscene phone call is simply to hang up. If the calls continue, here are simple and effective ways to deal with them:  Record the date and time of the call, and then have the call traced by dialing *57 immediately after you hang up. The caller’s number, your number and the time of the call are recorded by the phone company. After tracing three calls, contact the local police. Telephone call information will only be released to the police.  Ask your phone company about services like the call name and number display and *69 call return, which can also help you identify the caller.

Sensational Summer By Shellene Van der Beke

I have to agree that it is near impossible to get a good night’s sleep when the house is too hot and I fully acknowledge that mosquitoes, no-see-ums and horse flies can drive a person loopy. But, overall, these pale in comparison with the many amazing things I love about summer.

Dragonfly photo from Pixabay.com

The intoxicating morning air. At this time of year, early in the day, I can often be found standing at an open window taking in deep breaths of the air. Whether it is sunny or raining, I find early morning air exhilarating. It transports me to remembering things like summer holidays, camping and awaking early to watch the sun rise.

Daylight and Warmth. Gotta love the longer days. And, unlike the chill one often gets from being outdoors during the cool season, it’s terrific that being outdoors during the summer is nearly the same and as comfortable (often more comfortable) as being indoors. Even when the sun is especially hot, there is always a shady respite where one can relax and take in the world. Fresh food. Preferably local, but shipped in as well. Veggies and fruit at this time of year are crisp, sweet and delicious to eat. Community. It is great to see people out in their yards, enjoying the outdoors and gathering at summer events. It is a marvelous time of year to connect with tourists or re-connect with neighbors and friends to share stories and maybe meet up for a bonfire or two. The world famous poet and transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best: Live in the sunshine. Swim in the sea. Drink the wild air.

Nature Rx – Good for What Ails You? By Donna Duffy, RN, BSN, MPH

“Nature in her green, tranquil woods heals and soothes all afflictions,” wrote the naturalist, John Muir. Muir was not the first to make such an observation. In fact the idea of nature and the earth as sources of healing has been around for thousands of years. When we think of the elements that are necessary to sustain health, we think of clean air and water, healthy food, rest, shelter, social relationships. Can it be that we are leaving out something important? What about our relationship with the earth and nature—are we missing something when we spend our days within walls or within cities? Living indoors, are we depriving ourselves of some essential element necessary to our complete wellbeing? In recent years a growing body of scientific evidence says that this may in fact be the case. There is even a term now for the lack of exposure: “nature-deficit disorder”. The study of nature as healer is sometimes referred to as “ecotherapy”. Forest medicine is one aspect of ecotherapy that has received attention in recent years. The Japanese have a term, “shinrin-yoku”, which roughly translates to “bathing in the atmosphere of the forest”. Research studies conducted in Japan show that walking in a forest soothes the nervous system and reduces blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones in the body as compared with walking in a city. This may be part of the reason that people who live in areas with access to trees and green spaces tend to live longer. Other benefits from ecotherapy are seen in the area of mental health. Exposure to a natural environment has been found to improve mood, reduce stress and ease depression and anxiety. One study showed that walking in nature significantly reduced depression scores compared with the same amount of walking in a shopping centre. Another showed improvement in performance on memory-related tasks in people who walked for 50 minutes in nature versus walking in a man-made environment. Other studies suggest that as little as five minutes spent in an environment like a garden or a park increases self-esteem and motivation. And because nature calms us, ecotherapy has been used as a component of treatment for veterans and others recovering from trauma. Trying to pin down what exactly it is about the forest environment that our bodies find soothing, a 2010 Japanese study of shinrin-yoku attributed its stress-reducing effects to various qualities of a forest environment like the smell of wood, forest scenery, and the sound of running water in streams. Yet even seeing nature through a window is found to speed healing in hospital patients. A groundbreaking 1984 study showed that hospitalized patients fortunate enough to have views of gardens or trees from their hospital beds healed faster, needed less pain medication and had fewer post-surgical complications. As a result of this research, most new hospitals built today feature gardens in their design. And then there is “earthing”. Why does it feel so good to walk barefoot on dirt, sand or grass? Is there something beneficial that our bodies are receiving from direct contact with the earth? The answer is yes according to two physicians, Pawel and Karol Sokal, who have researched this question extensively. They suggest that contact with the earth is essential for normal physiology. They back this up with evidence from a number of well-designed research studies demonstrating the effects of “earthing” on physiological health, looking at parameters like blood pressure, stress hormone levels and blood glucose levels. The key, they maintain, is the interaction of our bodies with the electrical charge coming from the earth. This exchange is prevented by barriers like floors and shoes with soles made from synthetic materials. We’re lucky living on Haida Gwaii in that we are in relatively close proximity to natural settings like forests and beaches. We don’t have to go far to immerse ourselves in nature. As well, many of us garden—another great way to get your daily dose of nature therapy. An added benefit of getting out in nature is that it gets us away from television and computer screens and gets us moving our bodies. There are many theories for why modern man is plagued by so many chronic diseases, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental health disorders and addictions to name a few. It may be that one piece of the puzzle lies in our disconnection from the natural world. What is it exactly about nature that our bodies and minds find so soothing? Can it be that, as Henry David Thoreau once said, we need “the tonic of wildness”?

Softball History on Haida Gwaii by Pete Moore This year, with the combination of a bigger, more closely matched league, and the incredible weather, the Haida Gwaii Softball league was as popular as ever, sometimes seeing more than 100 spectators at a time. The Haida Gwaii Museum Podcast, also known as KAY KORNER, took this, as well as finding an old ball in the archives, as inspiration to dig a little deeper on Haida Gwaii’s Softball history. Though softball is now mainly associated with slow pitch, what was actually predominantly played on Haida Gwaii for decades prior to the late 90’s was fast pitch. Although it is unclear what officially brought the game to our island communities, Herb Jones, a respected Haida elder, remembers “a lot of interest started in 1956 when we had some kind of naval ship come in and they wanted to play; that was our introduction to windmill pitching.” Fast pitch became wildly popular on island, spawning a league that consistently had around 8 teams. Back in the day, the softball league, and the sport in general, was made possible by the socioeconomic structure of Haida Gwaii. Al Vandal, a long-standing community member and softball Photo courtesy Gladys Vandal player, spoke on how the inception of softball on Haida Gwaii came out of the thriving logging, fishing, and mining communities. At the time, these communities such as Moresby Camp, Juskatla, and Taasu, which are now just mere remnants, had enough people and money to put together a ball league and compete against each other. “There was so much money here, everybody was working,” Vandal said; “You could quit one camp one day and go to work the next day in another one,” he added. The constant availability of work and money on Haida Gwaii inspired the communities to interact on days off, and the softball league, which played a doubleheader every Sunday, was created as a result. When looking back, softball was so much more than just a recreational game. In many ways, softball doesn’t have to do with softball at all. What it allows us to see is the social and economic structuring of Haida Gwaii during the boom and bust of the 50’s and 60’s. Though perhaps not the most popular sport on Haida Gwaii, the longevity of softball’s history fills in a crucial piece of Haida Gwaii’s history. For more information on this, and other pieces of Haida Gwaii culture and history, be sure to check out KAY KORNER at SOUNDCLOUD.COM ________________________________________________________________________________________

“When you achieve that state of oneness

A Planetary Manager is much like a gardener. By yourself, the wisdom of gardening is slow to gather, but by learning from the elders you can gain the wisdom of generations of what works and what does not work to manage a productive garden.

Learning to be one with the earth is more than just gaining wisdom. It is aligning your life with the life of plants, animals, water, weather and the seasons, and mother earth. Being one with the earth requires that you release your separation from those elements and bond with them, knowing that you are already an intrinsic part of it the whole of the planet.

10

with the All of the earth you are ready to become a Planetary Manager, right where you are. Daniel Raphael

Eventually you will be able to stand in the forest and feel the energy of the trees, rocks, water and all of the living beings on the ground and in the air. When you achieve that state of oneness with the All of the earth you are ready to become a Planetary Manager, right where you are. The Planetary Management of Mother Earth is a role each of you can appreciate and fulfill wherever you live. Rather than being an obligation, it becomes a choice. As a Planetary Manager of the earth, you are a guardian of its resources, materially, energetically and spiritually.

Challenges of a Tiny Town – Port Clements, Haida Gwaii

by Manzanita Snow

There is a bit of a quandary over whether or not the Village of Port Clements is the smallest municipality in BC, but there is no doubt that it is a tiny town. Originally named Queenstown, the town was re-named Port Clements in 1914 and incorporated many years later in December, 1975. I live in Port Clements and have defended it fiercely in various debates. I believe it is a beautiful place and since 2003 I've watched it go through ups and downs and endless little controversies as it marches forward in spite of everything. Great plans are afoot – the grass is clipped townwide, the parks are lovely, the museum thrives, the library is now one of our important centres, and businesses grow and prosper. Our centenary year was amazing and we look forward to future opportunities. We do have some challenges, like every place. The roaming and aggressive dog issue continues. A dog catcher may be an answer. We need younger people to step forward and help out at events so our elder volunteers don't burn out. We need much fuller participation by people in local governments. Opinions and input are wanted and needed from all sectors. Water improvements are the number one priority of Village Council followed by biomass heating and Industrial Road upgrading. By the way, for any of you PC residents that wish to drop off a payment to the VOPC office outside business hours, did you know there is a handy mailbox outside for convenience? You can drop off your payments anytime and save yourself the cost of a stamp! Also, they are presently looking for a new Deputy Clerk. This is a full time position and the deadline for applications is Thursday, July 30th at 1 pm. For more information call 250-557-4295 or email cao@portclements.ca.

The 33 Annual Tlell Fall Fair “Locally Grown ,Rain or Shine” By Shellene Van der Beke / Photos courtesy Linda and Doug Louis

I am a complete country bumkin at heart and I love, love, love the Tlell Fall Fair. Harvests, hay eaters, hillbillies and hoedowns; there is fun for creatures of all kinds! With the amazing amount of sunshine we’ve had here on Haida Gwaii this Spring and Summer, it will be well worth checking out the bountiful local, garden harvest entries at this year’s fair.

According to the fair’s Entry Secretary, Linda Louis, the TFF has come a long way. There is a now a permanent entry gate, stage and large exhibitor building. For many years, a temporary stage was often built the day before the fair. What a job! There is now hot running water outside the exhibitor building and power in the field for vendors. The Tlell Farmers Market is now on site the day of the fair and they now have pens for the animals. Last year a beautiful “Tlell Fair Grounds” sign for the parking lot was made by talented local Woodworker, Ernie Burnett, and aquaculture was introduced as part of the fair as well. “One year when Valdy was here,” tells Louis when asked for a funny story, “it was pouring rain… buckets. He was playing a song and part way through he stopped, looked out into the audience sitting there with umbrellas , rain gear and some in garbage bags and said ‘Only in the Charlottes’ then continued on right where he left off on the song. Truly, as the fair theme states: come “rain or shine,” this is a fair not to be missed!

Since as early as 1912, the Graham Island East Coast Farmers Institute has held some form of annual agricultural fair on Haida Gwaii. In 1982, this gathering of country folk was formally named the Tlell Fall Fair. Every year, around 40 people work on a volunteer basis to bring the TFF to life…a fair whose focus is to educate people about food, crops and where their food comes from.

The Edge of the World Music Festival 40 Years of Music, Dancing and Fun! by Shellene Van der Beke

It’s 1975. Performing in Queen Charlotte City in the back of a pickup truck is Skidegate’s Percy Williams on his saxophone along with fellow musician Ron Souza. Who would have known that this event would eventually evolve into today’s world renowned Edge of the World Music Festival? Just goes to show you how sharing one’s love of music can spark amazing things! Once hosted by groups such as the QC Community Club and the QCI Arts Council (now the Haida Gwaii Arts Council) the EOTW Music festival officially became a not for profit society in the year 2000. Organizing an event of this size is no small feat. Entirely volunteer run, it takes 10 directors, 25 area coordinators, 10 hard core and about 100 other contributory volunteers to bring this entertainment extraordinaire to life. “I recently did the math, and it takes approximately 4255 volunteer hours (609 days of work @ 7hrs per day) to pull off the festival as it is today,” exclaims festival director Janet Rigg. When asked what has changed over the years, Rigg pointed out that much has changed. “At first it was an opportunity for locals to perform and then it became a venue to experience off island artists. Now it’s a combination, where we showcase our considerable local talent alongside the highest quality off island performers we can get. The site has changed from QC ball field, to the field by Crow’s Nest, to the Fall Fairgrounds. In the past 5 years we’ve moved away from having the huge circus tent and a small

plywood stage to having a state-of-the-art mobile stage with special lighting and incredible sound. We’ve also purchased tents with our official logo designed by Robert Vogstad to give a cohesive look to the festival grounds.” What all goes on at the EOTW Music Festival? Well, to name a few, lots and lots of dancing to start with and there is a kid zone, an interactive art piece for everyone to contribute to, a lantern parade every evening and tons of great food. For more information call Janet Rigg at 250557-4242 , email sewnart@haidagwaii.net or check out the EOTW website at www.edgefestival.ca
