Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges by Shellene Van der Beke Challenge: Harmony While in Conflict There are always going to be people in the world who see things differently than we do. The question is: how do we harmoniously coexist with them?
Recently, my Husband and I attended a communications and relationships skills weekend workshop at the beautiful youth center in Skidegate. It was splendidly presented by Elfi Dillon-Shaw of The Haven (based on Gabriola Island) and addressed, as stated in one of their Photo from Max Pixel publications, “life issues such as self-responsibility, anxiety, anger, sexuality, depression, passion and creativity. “ Normally a much longer course, this two day event was packed with amazing tips worthy of sharing.
Proactive Solutions:
Breathe: seriously, it’s no small thing. Everyone has said or heard “It took my breath away,” or “I was so angry I could hardly breathe.” Other than the obvious cellular need for oxygen, breath is important because it is the foundation for humanity’s peace and understanding. As we learned in Elfi’s workshop, taking time to breathe…deeply and often…will help us: Clarify our perceptions and thoughts. Fully experience our feelings. Share our experience with others and really hear what others have to say to us.
Self: awareness, acknowledgement, acceptance and appreciation. Yup, it’s still all about us. Today’s fastpaced world has many folk walking around oblivious of where they are truly at. How often do we do what we do because we think that’s what we are supposed to do? The thing is… harmony, especially in times of conflict, begins with knowing ourselves…the fabric of who we truly are…our story and how it affects who we are and how we respond to the world. Take Action: this is the last point for a reason. Before we choose to think, decide, perceive, believe, speak, judge, plan, ask, participate, agree, disagree, support or confront…all the steps before will ensure our actions are based on informed, conscious choices. “We must see that peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody, that is far superior to the discords of war.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

Time to G0:
Before, during, and after When it’s time to go, it’s time to go. But how you do know if it’s really time to go? I’m thinking of the soul-searching that comes with the question, “Should I quit my job?” After all, it’s not really that bad, the benefits are really good and a guaranteed income helps me sleep at night! But what if you experience the signs that tell you, “Your time here is up!”? For Laurie Gross in Queen Charlotte, those signs were hard to ignore. “A few years ago, I was working half-time in northern BC and dreading each day of work. I no longer could force myself to “be positive and make it work”. It started to feel like a toxic situation for myself ”. And she had a dream! “I always wanted to open up a yoga and wellness studio, but it didn’t make practical sense. I was the primary income earner for my family”. The decision to jump ship was, yes, a mixture of joy and trembling. “That was my sign that I needed to take the leap!” So she leased a building, invested funds into renovations, and offered yoga classes. There was never a moment of regret.
But were there moments of self-doubt along the way? “All of my doubts occurred before I made the decision to leave my job. After I handed in my resignation I felt like the world was a lighter place; I was so relieved. I learned a valuable lesson, that I need to trust my intuition and that the turmoil was caused because I was on the wrong path. Once you realign with your path the turmoil will dissipate.” There are clues when it’s time to leave a job. The work no longer has meaning; you lose your enthusiasm. Maybe you have to force yourself to be productive even though you are very capable. You may feel you no longer belong or you hide important parts of yourself in order to fit in. Maybe you have skills or strengths that you’d like to offer but there is no outlet for them in your job. And your health may be going downhill. So, what are your options? First, an honest self-assessment: if I focus on the good things about this job instead of the bad things, will that keep me happy? Am I leaving so I can avoid a tough but honest conversation with someone at work? Have I told my supervisor that I’m looking for new challenges and offered ideas on how that could happen here? And after that, it’s still time to go? Assess again. What are the strengths and expertise you want to offer in a new job or line of work? What are your core values that bring meaning? What type of work environment helps you thrive? Know what your “non-negotiables” are. Finally, give thanks for the people and opportunities that came with your current job. See it as an important stepping stone in your professional and personal growth.
Ask yourself what makes you come alive, because what the world needs is people who have come alive” - Howard Thurman

Mew Gull
Many migrations ago, I was on a bird count with one of my bird watching mentors, Dave Aldcroft, when I casually mentioned that there were “many seagulls around today”. He immediately corrected my broad misnomer saying “There are no such things as seagulls, only gulls.” This small, but potent adjustment in view, has led me to many enjoyable moments watching the variety, behavior and gregarious nature of the gull species.
For instance, among the gulls searching the washup, the medium-sized mew gulls peck at the abundant seafood. Also known as the short-billed gull, it has a beautiful dove-like head with an interesting three year transition to adult plumage. After being raised by its long-term monogamous

parents, the youngster has grayish-brown underparts, a dark tail band and pinkish legs for the first year. As a non-breeding adult it has a darker back, a greenish-yellow bill, and greenish legs. When breeding, the gull morphs: white head, tail, and underparts, a yellow bill and yellowish legs, and black wingtips with large white spots (definitely one of my favorite feathers to find). The mew gull is easy to determine by the high nasal call “mee’u”, or “hiyah-hiyah-hiyah”. So by seeing the mew gull, and not just seagull, perhaps it is the small adjustments in our view that will help to expand our consciousness.

Get Ready for the All Island Seniors Games By Fran Fowler, Photos by Archie Stocker Sr.
April 22 will be at least the 10th Annual All Island Seniors Games, for the 55 and over! We say at least, as we can’t actually remember how many there have been. This will be the 3rd time in Queen Charlotte, so we are starting our 3rd rotation around the Islands. Last year was a fun event in Old Masset, and we hope to continue the fun. Each year it is just a little different, we always try to have several of the same events that are in the B.C. Senior 55 Plus Games, this year in Vernon. Please contact any QC Senior if you are interested in going to Vernon, and you can check out their website www.55plusgames.ca Games which are in both events are: Darts, ours might be a bit different this year, Table Tennis, Carpet Bowling, Whist, Cribbage, and Pickleball demo. Additional Games for this year are: Sudoko, Shuffleboard, Wizard, Scrabble, Scavenger Hunt, Boules, Hulahoops, Mexican Train, Croquet. If not interested in these Games or unsure just come to visit and enjoy conversation with friends both old and those not yet made. We are planning for 100 people, spread over 5 areas on Community Hall grounds … 4 indoors and 1 outside too. This year we will welcome you at 9:30 in the QC Hall, [muffins for the travelers] then because there are such a variety of events, our day is divided into 3 parts, 10:0012:00; 12:00-2:00; 2:00-3:00, so that different games can be played at different times; there will be lunch available, on a help yourself basis between 11:30 - 1:30. Around 3:00, we will have some demonstrations, awards and our Loonie Auction results. To help with funding this event we ask that each community brings [individuals can too] a basket for our Loonie Auction. This year there isn’t a baking contest, although we will really miss those Masset cinnamon buns! We aren’t able to hand out travel subsidies but will have a draw for the drivers who traveled; so please consider carpooling. On Friday’s, just up until the games (although it could continue), you can practice both Carpet Bowling and Table Tennis at 1:00 at the Queen Charlotte Hall. We are also happy to travel to any community to demonstrate or review rules for any of the sports – leave a message at 250-559-4691. These Senior Games are the first of our 2 major All Island Senior Events of the year: winter/spring has the All Island Senior Games (rotates annually) and summer has the All Island Picnic in Tlell on Wednesday July 26th. Individual communities also sponsor events throughout the year. Hope to see you there, especially if you’ve never been … it is fun and free! 8
Yukon artist, Neil Graham explores the rich beauty of Haida Gwaii with bold visual energy. The series began at Tow Hill / Agate Beach, with rock formations, but evolved over the course to seascapes, beachscapes and the insertion of the human, both in the faces that populate the rock, and actual. Titles that characterizes a direct relationship with the land emerged; “The Haida Canoe,” “Sea Dragon Rider,” “Giant’s Hand.” The emphasis has become the narration of man in a spiritual connection with his environment, both today and historically. Graham was born in Pangnirtung, Nunavut in 1959, and spent much of his childhood in Arctic Canada amongst the Inuit (Pangnirtung and Inukjuak). He attended Ridley College School from 1970 to 1975, and the Universit of Guelph between 1978 and 1989. He began studying visual arts in 1982. Graham married in 1988, he moved to Whitehorse a year later. Graham has two daughters, and has since been a father at home and a professional visual artist. Haida Gwaii Gets Connected
A look at some of the earliest forms of on-island telecommunication By Pete Moore
On Haida Gwaii, at times there’s a communal sense of disconnect from the outside world. We were definitely behind the curve on getting cell service (some communities are still without), and although our internet is catching up to higher standards, it’s been a long time coming. Sometimes this is for the best, after all, a constant connection to the distant reaches of the world can result in a disconnect to what is right in front of us. That being said, Haida Gwaii’s journey to connectivity dates back a lot further than cell service and SMS. Pictured below is the telegraph station at Ikeda Point, which the first telephone line on island ran from. The line ran over the mountains to Jedway and to the Ikeda Mines, about four and a half miles. This station was closed in 1920.
Above is the telegraph station in Port Clements in 1925, and below is the one in Masset in 1914, with operator Mr. Graef standing outside.

MAKING MUSIC WITH KIDS: TAHAYGHEN BEAT MAKERS
Students at Tahayghen Elementary explored new skills in music, dance and theatre last fall through a very successful program. “Making Music with Kids” brought community members Michael Koenig and Etchi Zaleski into the classrooms, where they introduced rhythm, vocal practice, movement, and instruments like records and percussion to the students, who don’t usually receive any musical instruction. Sixty students of all ages and skill levels were involved, along with seven teachers. As the students explored their new skills, the program evolved into a production of Stone Soup, with students singing, dancing and performing. The show was performed at Tahayghen Elementary and then again at the Howard Phillips

Bee Friendly Hotels By Sarah Peerless
As bee populations decline worldwide, people are stepping up with fun and easy ways to help our fuzzy little friends. One of the best ways to support insect pollination in your backyard is to build a bee hotel. There are over 450 species of bees just in British Columbia, and many of these bees are solitary. Unlike the introduced honey bees, they live and work alone. They make tiny nests in the wild, which are often fragile and threatened by predators or unknowing humans. These solitary bees, because their existence isn’t discussed as much as their more popular cousins, can be mistaken for pests. Carpenter bees often make nests in outdoor wooden furniture, and leafcutter bees can be seen nibbling at leaves. But neither of these activities causes damage, and in the case of leafcutter bees, the small pieces they take are used to create nests for their eggs. Naturally occurring bee nests should be a welcome sight in any garden, but if their nests disturb you, placing strategic bee hotels can be a great way to keep them organized. A bee hotel provides a sheltered, safe location for bees to lay their eggs in peace. Not many tools or expertise is needed: just two small planks, a wide drill bit, and a couple of screws. Drilling several holes, ensuring they don’t reach the back of the plank, mimics the conditions a female bee looks for when choosing her next location. She’ll crawl in, lay her eggs, and seal the entrance with leaves or mud. Three or four months later, depending on the species, the larvae will chew their way out and emerge as adult bees ready to pollinate. Screw the second plank to the top of the first one, providing a roof to protect the holes from rain. Then attach your hotel to a tree or log somewhere near your garden. We put our bee hotel on a pole next to a honeysuckle plant. It’s dormant now, but in the summer it’ll be bustling with busy bees. Planting bee-friendly vegetables and flowers near your hotel will boost your bee population as well. Sweet peas, kale, onions, beans, berries, and tomatoes are great for both humans and bees. Our honeysuckle is always a bee hotspot, but other plants like nasturtiums, linaria, lamb’s ear, lavender, and sunflowers enjoy lots of attention over the warmer months. Despite the temptation, avoid painting or decorating your hotel. The chemical smells turn away prospective bees. If you don’t see any sealed entrances this season, don’t despair quite yet: many bees build their nests before winter so that when their larvae are ready to move out, the plants are ready to be pollinated. So get out there and get buzz-y! 14
HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT Fermented Superfoods By Marylynn Hunt Cabbage to sauerkraut; tea to kombucha; root veggies to kimchi; fruit to wine; flour to sourdough bread. If you enjoy any of these delicious and super healthy foods, you have partaken in fermented foods.
In the old days, when refrigeration was scarce and only available if the ice truck stopped by, fermenting was one of the best ways to store food. Putting cabbage in a basement crock to become sauerkraut was an excellent way to ensure a spoil-free, vitamin-rich supply of winter food. In fact, nowadays, we have an even better knowledge of the health benefits of fermented foods. The fermentation process breaks down the normally hard to digest cellulose found in many foods. This process changes the food into something new, delicious and full of good probiotics (lactic acid bacteria) that can dramatically aid in our digestive health.
An example of a cabbage slicer with bucket below
A cabbage stomper
Always a fond memory of mine is making sauerkraut each winter with my Dad. My favorite part was using the stomper. Our cabbage crock was about 10 gallons and we had a stomper that was a broom handle with a heavy round block of wood attached to the base. Basically, it was a huge mortar and pestle. I would raise and bring down the stomper onto the cabbage breaking it down in the crock and adding salt and sometimes onions with each layer. My Dad would run the cabbage slicer which was a bench with large blades imbedded into it and a wooden box that held the cabbages for slicing. The box slid over the blades and filled the crock below. Here are some examples of tools used for sauerkraut making but you can make your own with just a knife or cheese grater, a bowl, a jar, a weight and your hands! See the recipe below:
Crock or jar full of sauerkraut must be weighted down to keep the cabbage submerged
Cabbage Sauerkraut (small batch for the countertop) Finely slice or grate one head of cabbage into thin strips (small like for coleslaw) and add 1 tbsp of sea or kosher salt. Massage and squeeze the cabbage with your hands in a large bowl for 5-10 minutes until the juices of the cabbage will cover your hands if you push down on it. Place the cabbage and juices into a 2L glass jar or crock pushing the cabbage down firmly. Place a whole leaf of cabbage over the sauerkraut and again push down until the juices cover the leaf also. Place a clean rock, jar or something heavy and waterproof on top of the cabbage leaf to keep everything submerged. Place container on your kitchen counter (or in any room temperature spot) for at least two weeks and then have a taste. If the sourness is right for your taste, put into containers and refrigerate. If you would like a more vinegary taste, leave for another week and taste again. Once it is perfect, keep it in the refrigerator to slow the fermentation and preserve the flavor. Enjoy on sandwiches, bratwurst, or my favorite, on top of potato pancakes with lots of fried onions! Happy fermenting!

UNITED WE STAND
UNITED WE CELEBRATE
Haida Gwaii gathered in Old Massett to celebrate, and reflect on, the Enbridge era. By Pete Moore As you drive out to Old Massett, signs in protest of tankers, pipelines, and oil projects still line the streets and decorate people’s properties. For years, life on Haida Gwaii has been consumed by the threat of big business jeopardizing the way of life for the island community. The struggle against Enbridge and the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline has spanned years, and has been a tumultuous ride to say the least. During the Joint Review Panel sessions, over a thousand Haida Gwaii residents spoke out against the pipeline, only to see the panel give the project the thumbs-up shortly thereafter. Yet, the fight did not stop there; the people did not give up hope. In the summer of 2016, it was announced that the Federal Court of Appeal rejected the project; Haida Gwaii let out a collective exhale of relief. Now, almost 8 months after the Court of Appeal’s ruling, it seems the exhale of relief has transitioned to a fond memory. On March 25th, the Gaaw Community Hall in Food is served, as singers and drummers perform
16
Old Massett filled with people from all across the island and beyond to bond, reflect, and appreciate a shared experience. The event was co-hosted by the Council of the Haida Nation and Communities Against Super Tankers (CoAST), and was held just one day after the 28th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. That particular spill was frequently referenced during the fight as an example of what could happen; in similar fashion, on the 25th, it was brought up as what was prevented from happening on Haida Gwaii. The night was defined by its numerous speeches from people of all ages, with some too young to remember a time before the Enbridge era. Nika Collison, one of the MCs for the night, spoke of a similar experience with her children. “Both my children have grown up through this time,” she said while explaining a story where she asked her daughter what is the most important thing in the world, to which she replied without hesitation: “water.” An excerpt from Haana Edenshaw’s speech, depicted by Kara Sievewright
Other speakers included Peter Lantin, President of the Council of the Haida Nation: “we needed this,” he said as he thanked the organizers. Jennifer Rice attributed her election as MLA to Enbridge, explaining that the proposed project got her into environmental activism. JSB The Natural performed “Peace & Blessings”, “LCHG”, and “I Stay Reppin HG”, and Ja$e El Niño delivered his Haida Raid verses a cappella. Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson shared her experience as part of the legal team. The array of speakers offered a range of ideas, reflections, and experiences, but an undertone seemed to link each speech: in the fight against Enbridge, Haida Gwaii was united like never before. The event itself was a testament to the sense of unity achieved over this lengthy journey; protecting Haida Gwaii from a common threat eventually resulted in a shared celebration. Organizers were wearing t-shirts which at first glance looked like the iconic “United Against Enbridge” shirts, but with a second glance actually read “United We Beat Enbridge.” Of course, the celebration was not naive. Many speakers recognized the harsh reality that this, although a monumental victory, just marked the end of one battle, and there could likely be more to come. “Yes, we may have stopped Enbridge, but the Keystone Pipeline was just approved... Oil still flows out of the Tar Sands,” said Leslie Johnson, former Queen Charlotte village councillor. Johnson went on to say that we have to lead by example. By opposing these projects, there is also an obligation to present solutions. This is something that is happening here on Haida Gwaii, and is something that must continue. Through the unity that was displayed in the opposition, Haida Gwaii must also find strength to continue the fight, and to continue to create alternatives. The Celebration of the Victory ultimate marks the end of one big collective learning experience. Throughout the night, everybody realized, whether through speeches, the visuals, or the atmosphere in the space, what they learned over these years. Whatever each individual takes away, unity remains as a common learning. United we stand; united we celebrate; united we progress. President of the Council of the Haida Nation Peter Lantin

East Beach Phantoms? Picture of an oil painting done by Elizabeth Barlow of a cow who wandered the meadows of Tlell
Hippie cows are a local legend, especially amongst residents of Tlell. The debate over their existence is fuelled by a misunderstanding around what hippie cows actually are – because while feral cows do roam the coasts, Haida Gwaii’s hippie cows officially died out years ago. Doctor Don Richardson of Richardson Ranch says the shaggy, horned cows known as “hippie cows” are actually called Scottish Highland cattle. Around 200 of the bovines were brought to Haida Gwaii 50 years ago by a Vancouver company, Graham Island Cattle Company, and set free just east of Tow Hill. The company hired Jim Emery and his young son to watch over the cattle. They were given no food for the cattle, who were expected to forage around the dunes. Winter brought flooding and freezing temperatures that killed all six bulls and a majority of the cows. Graham Island Cattle Company filed for bankruptcy the next year. The remaining cattle were bought up by locals, namely Jim Abbott and Ward & Bellis, the latter setting up a farm on the highway between Port Clements and Masset. The Island’s Highland cattle were being bred with other cattle species in an attempt to weed out the undesirable Highland traits. All cattle were allowed to roam the highways freely, as before the mid 1980s, Highway 16 was only recognized as a Class 1 highway. It took a high speed collision between a milk cow and an ambulance carrying a pregnant woman (everyone in the ambulance lived, the cow did not) to reclassify the highway as Class 2 and outlaw any road wandering livestock. 18
History of Hippie Cows
By Sarah Peerless Photos courtesy of Dr. Don Richardson “The Scottish Highland cattle were a bit of a nuisance,” Richardson says. “They weren’t a super productive breed of cattle.” And as of 30 years ago, “There are no Scottish Highland cattle left on the Charlottes.” The feral cows of East Beach, separate from the owned cows wandering near Masset, have a more colourful past. In the early 1900s, homesteaders were encouraged by the government to build their homes on Haida Gwaii, one such homestead became Cape Ball. These homesteaders brought in cattle, in addition to the already present feral cattle in the area, and began to breed them. Cape Ball and similar homesteads were deserted between 1908 and 1914 as men left to join the war, and they let their cattle go feral in their absence. The last occupant left in the late 1950s. Cape Ball was left to fall into ruin, but the descendants of those cows still wander today. In the 1980s, these descendants were being shot at and killed by hunters without any real repercussions. However, owned and tagged cattle from Richardson Ranch were also wandering the dunes and hunted as feral cows. After nine Ranch cows were illegally killed and butchered in a single incident, the Ranch fenced their cattle in. The only cows wandering East Beach now are feral cows, unowned by anyone and not classified as wildlife. Because of the law passed to protect owned cattle, however, it is illegal to hunt these feral cows.
“It is illegal in the province of British Columbia for anybody to shoot a cow, anywhere, other than at your principle residence or in a licensed slaughter facility.” - Doctor Don Richardson East Beach feral cows

Afghans will be made and displayed at a secret location at the July long weekend Canada Day celebrations in Port Clements. They hope to keep the afghans up all weekend before they are distributed to households on-island. There is still more yarn available if anyone would like to join them. During the summer solstice of 2013, Haida Gwaii saw its first yarn bomb on the Pesuta shipwreck where yarn bombers gathered at the 5 am low tide, hung their afghans and then enjoyed visiting with a campfire and hot dogs. Later that year, the Tlell Fall Fair displayed all of the afghans for a second time. When asked how the local yarn bomb idea came to be, organizer Ann Logan tells of her visiting her Daughter in Vancouver when her first grandbaby was arriving…and she used to sit on this same bench with her Starbucks’ late down by English Bay. Her Daughter said, “Boy, if you stay here much longer, you’re going to yarn bomb that bench you’re sitting on!” This inspired Ann to look into what the heck yarn bombing was all about. She discovered that things like tree trunks, bus stops and telephone booths have been adorned with knitted and/or crocheted covers…and left there for a long time. “I’m just way too cheap for that,” Ann states. “In Yellowknife, they yarn bombed a 737 plane with afghans and then gave them away after…and I thought helping others afterwards was a great idea!” “It’s amazing how many different afghan patterns are being produced for our Canada Day Yarn Bomb. With just the colors red and white…it’s going to be spectacular!” If you or someone you know might be interested in creating one of the afghans to be yarn bombed, call Ann Logan at 250-557-4518 or email annelogan4518@gmail.com 2013 Pesuta Yarn Bomb Photo submitted by David Logan.

Supporting a community youth event on an island in Skidegate Inlet with the fibreglass canoe “Looplex”.
Danny Robertson and Nika Collison started Highlander Marine Services (HMS) in 2010 as a means by which to fill the gap in the local marine industry around how to best move smaller loads from point A to point B in a fast and efficient manner. As a new Dad, Danny was also keen to find a way to be out working on the water without needing to be away from home all of the time. The HMS business model suited this perfectly in that most of their jobs are day trips and this meant they could build a company doing something they loved while still being able to be home with their family at the end of each day. The cornerstone of the HMS business is their landing crafts. In the early years, it quickly became apparent that this was a great solution to the often challenging process of moving cargo and/or materials quickly and easily to shore in boat access-only locations throughout Haida Gwaii and the North Coast. “We started with one boat, the M/V Highlander,” reports Danny, “and before we knew it we added a second, larger vessel, the M/V Highland Ranger. We then added project management and logistical support services. Next was a small motorized barge, the M/V Highland Carrier. We then built a shop/office and we have not looked back.” Danny continues with, “All of our work is made possible because of the fantastic roster of local captains we have. We cover a multitude of different jobs and tasks around Haida

Gwaii and the North Coast that include supporting both the North and South Rediscovery camps, working with government organizations and non-profits in research and data collection projects, supporting film projects, hosting VIP visits, participating in food fisheries and more.” HMS has also had the privilege of being awarded contracts for such varied projects as coordinating and staffing the delivering of a fleet of vessels from up the coast to Haida Gwaii, managing the building of the new SGaang Gwaii longhouse in Gwaii Haanas and coordinating the cleanup of marine debris from the remote beaches around Haida Gwaii. In doing all of this, they’ve moved everything from construction materials to trucks, cars, tree planters and their equipment, all-terrain vehicles, research equipment, youth groups, garbage, a horse and even one deceased whale! “Running a marine business on Haida Gwaii is hugely rewarding as we get to work in some of the most stunningly beautiful environments anywhere on our planet,” Danny proudly states. “We also love working with people and no two jobs are the same so every day brings something new. There is such great support from and for the business community on Haida Gwaii so the set up, growth and development of our business has really been a positive experience.” In addition to this, HMS collaborates with the local marine community and other businesses such as tourism, sport fishing boats, government vessels and the commercial fishing fleets. All work well together, and respect and support each other. “I think this in part comes by way of the code of the mariner to look out for each other when on the water, but it is also largely because of how we
all live, work and depend on each other here on island. It’s a privilege to do business on Haida Gwaii and it’s the beauty of the land and waters around us combined with all of the great people we work with that make every day so great.” Danny loves how fun of a business HMS is to operate and they hope to continue to grow and provide their services for decades to come. They are already training the next generation of captains and deckhands as most of their team is also raising families and they encourage them to bring their families along whenever possible. quality of living are in a state of chaos and decline. The good news is that the number of people who are questioning the “buy now, pay later” and “more is better” idioms is increasing every day. Enter: Minimalism. Sage advice adapted from a post on www.zenhabits.net: Minimalism: omitting needless things In the words of one of the greatest political satire comedians, George Carlin, “...that's the whole meaning of life, isn't it? Trying to find a place for your stuff. That's all your house is...your house is just a place for your stuff. If you didn't have so much stuff...you wouldn't need a house. You could just walk around all the time. That's all your house is, it's a pile of stuff...with a cover on it.” It was not so long ago (during my Grandparents’ time) that most people earnestly lived by the “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.” ideology. Now, several decades later, the hypnotic affects of mass media advertising have many of us yearning for, paying for and surrounded by too much stuff. (I fully admit to having way too much stuff.) The writing is on the wall. With all of the “keeping up with the Joneses,” many aspects of our economy, environment and

Possessions: Is everything you own truly important? Omit needless things. Buying: It’s a waste of time to reduce your possessions if you just buy a bunch more. What’s important is being content with life, not stuff, and thereby reducing your needs. Omit needless purchases. Eating: Make everything you eat count by making your food nutrient dense, fiber-dense, healthy and filling. Omit needless and empty food. Doing: Do less. What is really important? Omit needless activity. Goals: Do we really need 101 goals? How about starting with just one and really pouring ourselves into it? Omit needless pressure. I have this list printed out beside my computer. Advice I aspire to live by. “Possession of material riches, without inner peace, is like dying of thirst while bathing in a lake.” -Paramahansa Yogananda
Horoscopes for April, 2017
Aries (March 20-April 19) Relationships of unusual origin are on the horizon for you this month, dearest Aries. What appears to be taking center stage is when do you do what is right for yourself versus right for the group at large? You may feel the pressure to succumb to the will of the people but I remind you that beside yourself, who is looking out for you? Key Words: Responsibility, Loyalty, Resources Taurus (April 19-May 20) Perhaps there’s a level of confusion surrounding you at this time, dear Taurus? Or maybe it’s hard to stay focused? Either way, this too shall pass and you may be left with the right answer at the perfect time. Try to stay present and expect the vision to miraculously appear. Key Words: Believe, Intuition, Inspiration Gemini (May 20-June 21) If there was ever a time to hike to the highest peak and meditate, this would be the time. I know this is not the most practical advice for someone that can manage a million things at once, like you can, dearest Gemini. But I ask you to breathe deep, slow down and ground yourself into the earth energy. Just for a little bit. Key Words: Creativity, Visionary, Lighten Up! Cancer (June 21-July 22) It’s time to get clear on your
goals for the future, dear Cancer. What are they and how do you plan to fulfill them? This is the time to make this perfectly clear to your inner self. You are entitled to your dreams and to making them a reality. Use your power and wisdom for the good of all but especially for you. Key Words: Desire, Dream, Wish Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Your desire to achieve your career goals is high right now, dearest Leo. But there are opposing forces coming your way as well. And they live in your deepest psyche and ask you this question: How have you been underestimating yourself? You can reach for the stars and actually reach them but you need to answer this key question first. Then shift your awareness and realize that you deserve all the glorious opportunities coming your way. Key Words: Pursuit, Specialty, Achieve Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) You are in line, dear Virgo, to have an attitude adjustment. Not that you need it, but this shift is something we could all use about now. You are just the first in line. It’s a shift into hope again, and expression and fun-loving freedom and happiness. And it’s waiting for you to pick it up. Enjoy! Key Words: Travel, Independence, Choice
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) There’s a feeling in the air, dear Libra. That feeling is assertiveness, especially in relationships. Fellowship with friends, family and spouses. The tendency here is to be combative to the point that your message is not getting across. My advice is to back up a little and take stock in your surroundings. How can you make your point in a way that all parties hear what you have to say as well as understand it? This is your goal. Key Words: Consideration, Compassion, Caring
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Dear Scorpio, does it feel like you are walking uphill this month? The key to your success lies in doing the hard (and frankly boring) work of crossing your T’s and dotting your I’s. In order for you to find peace, it’s important to complete a project that’s been nagging at you. Such as, your taxes? Painting your house? Planting that garden? What’s on your list? Key Words: Solve, Thorough, Follow-Through
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) If you happen to be a teacher, dearest Sagittarius, then this month’s for you. Follow your inner child to play and tinker about. Allow yourself a much-needed breather. Knit a sweater, get outside and hike or paint your bedroom the colors of the rainbow. It’s ok to take a stress-break. Key Words: Recreate, Delight, Laughter Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) You may be running around like a madman/woman. I know you think there is too much to do, dear Capricorn, and I’m sure there is. But it’s important to take time for yourself and your family, to just be, being together. That is doing something too, it’s rejuvenating yourself. Key Words: Multitask, Focus, Calm-Down Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Please spend some time getting your finances in order this month. It’s important to address any issues around your resources, dearest Aquarius, and not sweep the emotional or intellectually hard stuff under the rug. It’s quite all right. Just make a plan, and then follow
through with it. Key Words: Stability, Grounded, Clarity Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) You are moving from new opportunities and beginnings into the question of how are you going to get from point A to point B? The key to completing . your mission may lie in the hands of compassionate and caring friends or family. This month, dearest Pisces, ask for help and you can expect to receive it. Key Words: Passion, Earthy, Helpful
