Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges

New Year’s Resolutions Easy as Pie? by Shellene Van der Beke

Mmm…pie, (head shake) OK…focus.

Challenge: Many of us have something we would like to change, improve, experience and/or attain in 2017. A common question is: how can we make our New Year’s resolutions really stick? Solutions: Question #1: are you sure? 

Authentic Goals: Speaker and filmmaker, Philip McKernan, hit the nail right on the head when he said: “You are better off in life with no goals, than chasing a set of goals that belong to someone else.” Whether what you seek is external or internal, many a wise person has said: go within. Once our goals truly resonate with who we are, deep down, they are, more often than not, easier to attain and even more fun!

Question #2: are you willing to celebrate? 

Small Wins: Instead of punishing ourselves for bad behavior or poor performance, how’s about we kick up our heels for our wins…even the wee tiny ones? There is now solid proof that celebrating our successes actually helps to re-wire our brains and releases feel-good chemicals that help us stay on the path of what we want to achieve. “The bigger the why, the easier the how.” Author, entrepreneur and speaker Jim Rohn

When Was the Last Time ... ... you did something for the first time? Last week? Last month? Last year?

If the thought of this new thing makes you smile, that also means you are in the right territory.

In September, I caught my first fish, ever! The shock, surprise and exhilaration energizes me still! That lucky catch opened up a whole new world to me, a world to which I thought I could not belong. Whether I catch another fish in my life is not important. That beautiful salmon out of the Tlell River fed my stomach as well as an increased sense of possibility what else could I do or be that I think is out of my reach?

Instead of letting our fear trap us in predictability and comfortable boredom, we can use fear to grow our courage!

How about you? What idea, dream or goal – big or small – has been hovering around in the background for a while? Maybe it’s trying a new hobby, or initiating a conversation with someone new, or looking for another job. Maybe it is showing up more honestly in tricky conversations. And what holds you back? Is it fear of what people will say, or looking foolish, or lack of skill or knowledge? Most people experience all of those when trying something for the first time. I certainly did. My stomach churned during the drive from Queen Charlotte to the Tlell and then while I stood on its bank, casting my line so clumsily, once landing up in a tree. Cringe! If you feel that mixture of anxiety and excitement, then you know you are stretching your comfort zone and that is good!

It sounds backwards. Usually we think, “I need to build up more courage before I do this new scary thing”. But no, we exercise our courage muscles by “feeling the fear and doing it anyway”. One woman who performs often at the Queen Charlotte coffee house said she performs to build her confidence. That is a great example of how fear is the natural companion of creative action. Here is a challenge for the New Year - start an exercise program for your courage muscles. Do one thing each week that is scary or difficult; one that makes your heart beat a bit faster with dread and/ or excitement. Keep these actions authentic and doable, as in “At some level, I know I am ready for this”. Feel your feelings (nervous, embarrassed, and foolish) and remember, they are normal. Reassure yourself in the way a very supportive, loving parent would. Then go for it! The result – aliveness and expansion! These authentic, adrenaline-rush actions will move you closer to who you are meant to be. Happy New Year!

New Owner at the Crow’s Nest!

Proud new owner of Tlell’s Crow’s Nest Café and Country Store, Adriene O’Brien, was born and raised in Skidegate and has lived on Haida Gwaii all of her life. No doubt, many of you have already been enjoying Adriene’s delicious baked goods, which she started making at the Crow’s Nest a while before procuring the business from long time owners, Anne Barnes and Jason Fox. When asked where she learned to bake so well, Adriene noted “from helping a dear friend, my second Mom, with her incredible Christmas baking which she started every year in August! I learned a lot from her.” Adriene’s focus for the Crow’s Nest is all about LOCAL and HANDMADE. Local and in season produce, local Island Meat & Sausage, handmade baked goods and brunches as well as arts and crafts…all locally created. Brunch will be served on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 3pm. Just like before, the Crow’s Nest will still have groceries, liquor sales, DVD rentals, ice cream and specialty coffees…and the same, amazing hours: 10am to 7pm, 7 days per week! Congratulations and all the best of success to the new Crow’s Nest team! For more information, call 250-557-4593 or email adriene@haidagwaii.net

Thank you Anne and Jason! From the countless people you have served, for your many years of operating the Crow’s Nest for so many long hours. Your contributions are deeply appreciated. All the very best to you and yours!

The Grayest of Steller’s Jay

I heard a lot of shook-shook-shooking, wings flapping, and chattering by the bird table. The flock

of adults and youngsters were grouped around on various branches when a noticeable hush stilled the scene. Out from the bare salmon berry bushes flew in a Jay different than I had seen before. It had a big gray beard and gray eye stripes and moved in a way that I can only describe as “in tune with the forest”. All of the others watched alertly as it came down to eat. I had the feeling that the local Jays had guided it in from the deep forest to the table as it was slim and would be hungry with its food sources frozen solid. I never saw it again, but I witnessed a genuine respect for an elder in bird society.

The Gray Jay, Canada’s new national bird, doesn’t live on Haida Gwaii. Instead, we have the resident Steller’s Jay, a bird of beautiful blue and black. The Steller’s Jay is about the same size as the Gray Jay and part of the highly intelligent Corvidae family which includes the Crow and Raven. During the cold winter days they feed eagerly on rolled oats from my breakfast time. Packing their mouths until they can fit no more, the Jays fly off to stash the oats in root crevices or under tree moss where they will retrieve it later for a light snack. It was during one of those particularly frozen mornings that I saw the grayest Steller’s Jay.

WHERE

Every year, growing up on Haida Gwaii, I was lucky enough to have a holiday tradition of going skiing. Whether it was during Christmas break or over Spring break (or sometimes even both), my family always made it a priority during my high school years to pack up our ski bags and head out on the ferry to Terrace or Smithers for a weekend.

WILL

Now that I’m back on Haida Gwaii after 4 years away at school, I was looking forward to trying to make my way across the strait again. But due to various reasons (namely procrastination with work tasks and a relatively late start at the mountains), this didn’t happen. So naturally, I took the prospect of a winter vacation into my own hands.

TAKE YOU?

Any time there is a slight dusting of snow in town, we load up the vehicles with sleds, snowboards, skis, hot chocolate, and any dogs that want to come along for the ride and head up Sleeping Beauty. Usually we just find a nice enough hill for sledding, but every once in a while a more adventurous hike is in order. Having missed the chance to hit a real ski hill this year, it was necessary to take on Haida Gwaii’s most accessible peak. Following the island-wide big snowfall, the south end had a week of dry and clear weather – perfect for winter hiking. Unfortunately, on the day we decided to go, the grey clouds made their return. It was raining at the bottom of the trail, and as we hiked up we watched the precipitation slowly transition to flakes. Conditions like these, although undeniably beautiful, make for a soggy slog up the side. By the time we hit the summit, I was completely drenched in a mixture of my own sweat and the rain/wet snow that had been falling for the duration of the hike. Carrying ski boots and skis on my back left my knees feeling like they were going to crumble. Away from the shelter of the trees, the wind and sideways-blowing snow was piercing. I realize I’m probably depicting what sounds like a terrible experience; even at the time I had brief moments when I questioned my judgement. But the feeling of exhilaration and triumph once I reached that peak was something else. Standing there as the wind whipped across my face made the ride down feel like an added bonus. Although it came nearly at the end of the year, the Sleeping Beauty ski expedition was one of my top moments of 2016.

But that was in December. It’s now the new year, and locals often have one common thing on their mind: what hot, tropical country am I going to vacation to this year? Whether it’s in search of a thrilling adventure through mountains or forests, or a relaxing book reading session on a tropical beach, Haida Gwaii-ans love to vacation. The winter blues get to all of us in some degree. The short days, long and dark nights, and ugly weather is bound to take its toll. But as I was standing on the peak of Sleeping Beauty, just about to drop in and ski down the face, I realized that if you put your mind to it, Haida Gwaii can offer you just about anything anywhere else can.

Skiing Sleeping Beauty is definitely something that will only appeal to a small demographic, and is something that should only be attempted by experienced riders. Luckily, Haida Gwaii has an endless supply of adventures to offer. Surfing on island has been a growing interest among locals. The North Beach Surf Shop has boards and wetsuits for purchase and for rent, and even offers lessons to get you on your feet. Make it a weekend adventure by staying at North Beach Cabins who are offering a “Local Love Discount” – tax free! Admittedly, perhaps the adventurous climbing-sleepingbeauty-for-skiing, surfing-in-the-freezing-cold, type vacation is not everybody’s idea of a vacation. As mentioned

A 2016 Sun Studio Yoga Retreat In February, Sun Studio is offering a yoga retreat called “Yoga & Creativity”. The Sun Studio website says “through Kundalini Yoga, meditation, dance, and art-making, you enhance your intuition, experience the wisdom within you, and move into the new year with fresh awareness.” Sign up before January 30th for the early bird rate.

Catching a wave at North Beach

Also helping you bring in the new year on a calming note is local massage therapist Kim Goetzinger, who for the month of January is offering $10 off of all booked appointments. Amber’s Spa in Queen Charlotte is also offering deals throughout the months of January and February. Check out their facebook pages for more details.

before, some of us definitely lean more towards the book on the beach side of the vacation spectrum. Well if that is the case, don’t let Haida Gwaii’s cold winter weather deter you from finding serenity here on the islands. Perhaps you are looking for a sight you have not seen (or had the time to examine) before; Haida Gwaii is full of these. Turn a shopping trip to the heart of Tlell into an exploration of 62 million years of local geology at the Tlell Stone Circle located outside of Crystal Cabin. Take the selfguided tour for 360 degree views of volcanic thunder eggs, rare fossils, ancient wood and island crystal. Afterwards, head inside for an espresso!

Kim’s Massage Clinic Whether it’s a thrilling ride down the side of a mountain or wave, an educational must-see sight, a meditative getaway, or a theraputic massage or spa that you’re seeking, Haida Gwaii has the answer. So, when you’re booking your 2017 trip, remember to think about what your backyard has to offer.

The Tow Hill Plank Road

Yet another installment on the evolution of Haida Gwaii’s roadways By Pete Moore

You might remember a few issues back we shared the story of an early infrastructure development of the Plank Road between Port Clements and Tlell. That road, which ran in a similar route as the highway we know today, was just one of many plank roads to be laid across Haida Gwaii.

Pictured left is Fisheries Officer Andy Skipper, and at the end of the road you can actually see Tow Hill on the horizon.

The Tow Hill Plank Road was built by Foreman Jessie Bridden, whose idea was later adopted to build another plank road between Tow Hill and Port Clements.

The roads could be very treacherous when wet, as they offered little traction, and a very narrow surface to drive along. Furthermore, the roads were even more difficult to travel when you encountered oncoming traffic!

In all of these pictures, you can also see the famous Ford Model T.

The plank roads that tracked across Haida Gwaii not only show us the early ways of transportation on the island, but also help us better understand our early communities. These photos are courtesy of the Dixon Entrance Maritime Museum. They can be reached by calling 250-626-6066 and are located at 2172 Harrison Ave. in Masset.

Rosemary Chicken

with a Dijon Mustard and White Wine Sauce I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like chicken, and at Baru Farm*, right here on Haida Gwaii, they raise the juiciest organic grain-fed birds that I’ve tasted. Although you can use any chicken for this recipe, their birds will take your recipe up a notch that is sure to impress the ones you feed. I’ve made this recipe so many times. It’s simple, yummy and elegant. Temperature 425 Cooking time 1/2 hour Serves 4 Ingredients: - Four chicken breasts, bone removed and skin left on - 2 tablespoons of fresh chopped rosemary - 1 tablespoon olive oil - 1 tablespoon butter - Salt and pepper Sauce: - 1 shallot minced - 1 garlic minced - 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard - 1/2 cup white wine - 1/2 cup chicken stock - Zest of half a lemon Preheat oven to 425. Salt, pepper and sprinkle both sides of breasts with chopped fresh rosemary On medium high heat, add olive oil and butter to a sauté pan, when butter starts to bubble a bit add chicken and brown about 2 min or until it has a nice color to it. Turn and cook another 2 min. Transfer to a baking dish. Place in the oven for 20 min. DO NOT wash sauté pan. When chicken is done, take out , cover with foil and let it rest on stove top while you start the sauce. On medium heat, add shallots and garlic to the sauté pan you fried the breasts in and sauté until tender. Add mustard and wine, let the wine reduce to half, and then add chicken stock. Cook for about 5 min, stirring to thicken. Place chicken on a board for cutting and add any remaining juice from roasting your chicken (drippings) to your sauce. Add grated lemon zest. To serve, slice chicken on an angle, spoon a little sauce on the plate, place sliced chicken over sauce and add a little sauce over the chicken. Enjoy! *Baru Farm is a fully licensed meat processing facility that also sells organic, grain fed chicken and eggs. They are located in Queen Charlotte and can be reached at 250-559-4586 or email barufarm@haidagwaii.net

CULTURAL HUMILITY Be it due to poor lifestyle choices, modern day stress, or the towering needs of baby boomer seniors, today’s healthcare system is under an immense amount of pressure. With this in mind, it is good to know that there’s some good news worth sharing. News that can serve to help each and every one of us in standing up for and communicating what we truly need to care for ourselves and each other. But first, a bit of a bigger picture precursor. If mainstream media had the last say, it would shout that the world is going to heck in a hand basket. Yet, despite the many challenges humanity is facing, in many aspects, as a species, we are actually (and finally) starting to get a handle on things. Homo sapiens have come a long way from the basic survival, infant phase (eat, sleep and stay alive), onto the toddler phase of learning how to share with others (human, labor and gender rights movements), to the more world-aware teenage phase (environmental responsibility). Now, in its early adult phase, humankind is expressing wide scale activism with movements such as social sustainability, repatriation and the awareness and fairness of the distribution of wealth. In many ways, humankind is getting its act together.

racism and discrimination. The goal: that people feel safe when receiving health care. • Cultural safety is defined by each individual client’s health services experience. One of the organizations that declared a commitment to cultural humility, the First Nations Health Authority, published a resource booklet called Creating a Climate for Change. In it, it states “Cultural humility involves humbly acknowledging oneself as a learner when it comes to understanding another’s experience.” “To be culturally humble means that I am willing to learn,” states FNHA CEO Joe Gallagher, “that I acknowledge that I do not know everything about the various cultures in British Columbia, nor do I know where an individual is in relation to their culture.” Gallagher continues with “We can only know that we have achieved a culturally safe service if our customers tell us that the service they received was safe to them.”

Yet another movement that is proof our species is heading down the right path is Cultural Humility: the ability to maintain an interpersonal stance that is other-oriented (or open to the other) in relation to aspects of cultural identity that are most important to the [person]. (Wikipedia) Two summers ago, all BC Health Authority CEOs signed a DECLARATION of COMMITMENT to advancing cultural humility and cultural safety within health services. From the CEO of the Ministry of Health, Provincial Health Services Authority, First Nations Health Authority, Vancouver Coastal, Fraser, Interior, Island and our local authority, Northern Health, all signed their names to develop and act on the principles of cultural humility and safety with a commitment to reciprocal accountability. This declaration of commitment, as stated in their published works, is based on the following guiding principles: • Cultural humility builds mutual trust and respect, enables cultural safety and contributes to an environment free of

Shrimp and Ricotta Phyllo Pockets

Ricotta Around 200 AD, Athenaeus first wrote about ricotta. It was considered a food for poor people because it was made from the by-product of cheese made for rich people. It is sad that those rich people would never enjoy a cannoli that is stuffed with ricotta, fruit and nuts. Ricotta is a slightly sweet cheese-like milk product that is often used in desserts. It is a pleasant, mild, creamy product that is well-suited to appetizers and party plates because it pairs well with almost any flavor profile. Mixed with spinach it makes a lovely filling for ravioli. Ricotta is not a cheese. It is classified as a creamy curd. The whey poured off in the making of cheese is heated to a higher temperature and the ricotta floats to the top and is drained. Ricotta is derived from the Latin word recocta which means re-cooked. When cheese is made, most of the fat is in the cheese and when the whey is processed into ricotta it is very low in fat in spite of its rich flavor. Ricotta is a very versatile ingredient that is only limited by your imagination.

3 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon canola oil 1/3 cup chopped celery 1/3 cup red or green bell pepper 2/3 cup chopped green onion 2 dashes Tobasco sauce 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons all purpose flour 1 pound large shrimp chopped 1/2 cup ricotta 1/3 cup milk 1 16 ounce package frozen phyllo dough thawed 1/2 cup butter Heat the 3 tbs of butter and canola oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Stir in the celery and peppers and cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the green onions, hot sauce and salt. Cook until the onions are wilted, about 3 minutes. Stir the flour, shrimp, ricotta and milk into the mixture. Cook until the shrimp are pink, about 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Melt the 1/2 cup butter in a small pan over medium heat. Remove from the heat and keep warm. Stack 2 sheets of phyllo dough and cut into 3 strips that are 3 inches by 12 inches. Cut these again to 3 inches by 6 inches. Brush edges with melted butter to seal them. Add 1 teaspoon of the shrimp mixture to one end of the phyllo and seal it. Brush the top with melted butter and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Continue with the remaining phyllo and filling. Bake until golden and flaky.

Pat Fricker has lived on these islands that she adores for over 30 years. She loves gardening, greenhousing, and cooking. She also enjoys the superior flavor of fresh fruit and veggies that are on the table shortly after picking.

Pollyanna or Perspective Possibilities? Showing up for life - full on - means there will be people, places and things that will twang on our heart strings, put bothersome bees in our bonnets and/or take the wind right the heck out of our sails. Yes, there’s no denying it some of life’s colors are a downright drag. And yet, as in the words of #1 bestselling author Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code / The Lost Symbol), “Sometimes a change in perspective is all it takes to see the light.” When life has you under its thumb, maybe try giving one or more of these breaths of fresh air virtues a ponder:

Authenticity: true to one’s own personality, spirit or character, complements honesty and integrity and transcends low and/or falsified self-esteem. Gratitude: a feeling of appreciation or thanks, complements hope, joy and peace and transcends disappointment and pain. Unity: the quality or state of being

Outboard dolly/stand. Outboard dolly/stand. Bought last year and used about three times. $40 Call Paul at (250) 984-8916 or email pkail@runbox.com Stolen stuff...reward for info. My beloved kayak and the outboard for my beater skiff were stolen earlier this fall from the Nadu river mouth on Masset inlet. They’ve been there for six or seven years with no issues, but it seems like someone finally decided they need them more than I do. The kayak is fibreglass, Greenland style with high bow and stern- no rudder. Screw-on hatch covers. The boat motor is an old beater Johnson my kid and I used to get out camping in the inlet with. I’m not so worried about the boat motor- it’s easier to replace than my kayak is. If anyone has seen anything or knows anything about this stuff please get in touch - no questions asked. I’ll offer whatever money I can scrape together at the time, as a reward- should be at least a couple hundred dollars. Thanks.
