Haida Gwaii Eyes…Wide Open

Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges

Charity Clarity

by Shellene Van der Beke

Challenge: how to help those in need while living busy and budgeted lives of our own.

One thing about tragedy is: it has no prejudice. It can happen to any of us. One cannot deny the heartstring tug for what has and is happening to the many people who have been displaced by the Fort McMurray fire. Right now, around 20 times the population of Haida Gwaii, an estimated 90,000 fellow Canadians, no longer have a place to call home.

Although what it will cost to re-build the homes, businesses and infrastructures destroyed by this fire is still being figured out, it is estimated it will be in the billions of dollars. As with any tragedy, the cost is widespread and will be shared by citizens nationwide. Although the local outpouring of relief response is formidable, in the words of Thomas Fuller “Charity begins at home, but should not end there.”

So, the question is, what can a person do here on Haida Gwaii to help when they, themselves live within a limited budget and cannot respond by travelling to Northern Alberta? This is where unity consciousness comes in: the embodiment of the truth that we now know that we do not live as separate beings, that all things are connected and we in fact are all one. The sooner this is embraced by mainstream society, the sooner what truly needs to be done will be done.

You may only be able to spare a few dollars, but that, together with many other people’s few dollars is exactly what enables the proper organizations to do what we cannot do directly ourselves. Not only will your few dollars truly help, through the avenues below, Federal and Provincial matching funds offered through the relief organizations listed below makes your few dollars turn into many that help in a demonstrable way.

Proactive Solutions:  Give what is actually needed, and from this distance, what is truly needed is money.  Be cautious when giving online; never respond to unsolicited emails or texts. Give only to registered charities set up to help directly. Here are two, bona fide channels to give: Canadian Red Cross: go to www.redcross.ca/donate and click on the “Alberta Fires Appeal” link. You can fill in your amount and pay with a credit card or PayPal. The Canadian Salvation Army: go to www.salvationarmy.ca/donate-now and under “Specify Your Donation” section, click on the “Donate to Alberta Fires response”.

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” Mother Teresa ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Do you have a solution-based topic, thought or project you would like to share? RCMP News Release

Helpful safety tips brought to you by your local RCMP Recently there have been several emergency incidents that demonstrated the importance of emergency preparedness of one’s activities in the back country and on the water. Through the coming months, Masset RCMP members will be on the water conducting safety checks of vessels to ensure the mandatory safety equipment is on board and serviceable. The equipment requirements vary between vessels by their length; you can determine the requirements for your boat at www.boatingsafety.gc.ca. Considering the remoteness of our area and the potential for extreme weather, it is wise to consider carrying supplies you might require if you are unable to return home when intended. Whether you are going out on the water or into the back country, ensure you advise someone of your route, destination and planned return date and time. This information is vitally important to ensure timely action is taken to confirm your safety and engage any resources required. This is the same information required for commercial sailings and aircraft to ensure the safety of travellers.

The TRC Challenge by Shellene Van der Beke

As mentioned in this month’s “Reading on the Rock” article on page 8, in honor of National Aboriginal Day on June 21st, a challenge is being sent out to all people on Haida Gwaii to read the 382 page Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s report summary. Whoa…382 pages? Yes, about as long as any novel, so really, it’s totally doable. Why read the report? Because this document is important reading for anyone who cares about the rights of humans. Because getting to know the people in one’s community, especially in rural locations, is one of the key strengths of a community’s survival, growth and sustainability. Ask yourself this: who do you trust that you do not know? Even if you agree to disagree on various things, communities that “hold space” for each other also tend to watch out for each other. This increases everyone’s sense of peace and safety. People who are open to getting to know their neighbors are also better able to work together, whether on initiatives that are all about fun or serious things that arise if a push comes to a shove. Knowing people in our neighborhood and learning a bit about who they are, where they come from, what challenges they are overcoming or trying to overcome, their dreams, thoughts, beliefs, opinions…where their heart is…creates a community atmosphere of “being in place”. They don’t say “Home is where the heart is” for nothing. Last, but not least, getting along is, by far, one of the best “lead by example” lessons we can teach our children. Hands down. I know I won’t read every word, but one of my goals in June is to at least take a look at this important written work…one that deeply affects so many of us here on Haida Gwaii...and beyond…how about you? Might you take the challenge?

Sleeping outside Whether you have a guardian breed such as Kuvasz, or a triple coated Malamute, there are many dogs that prefer to be outside, at least part of the year, in particular during the cold months. Many cold loving dogs are perfectly happy to be outside in temperatures up to -20. During hot weather however, make sure to provide a cool place for cold loving animals, many of them may resort to digging large holes in the yard in attempt to keep cool. Providing outdoor dogs, cats, goats, horses, bunnies, chickens and other backyard pets, with a comfortable place to sleep is part of our responsibility as animal caregivers. Straw ($22.50 for a large bale - available at Ranch Feeds in Tlell) is a lovely insulator and can help your outside critters stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Watch for seed pods, as these can work their way through thick coated dogs and create sores and skin irritations - short coated animals will be fine. (Spent straw is a fantastic addition to the garden or compost!) Wood shavings are another great choice for pretty much all outdoor animals with the best shavings choices from our area being pine, alder, or even hemlock. Cedar shavings during wetter times of the year are okay for bedding, if they become dry and dusty however, the sawdust can cause lung irritation. On a positive note, insects such as fleas

4

and mosquitoes are offended by the smell of cedar, so spending some time in cedar bedding might be a blessing for your outdoor critters during the mosquito months. (Cedar shavings are not recommended for gardening but pine, alder and hemlock are great!) If you find your animal has suddenly started scratching, develops a cough, or is otherwise acting strange, consider a possible reaction to the bedding. Contact allergies are common in both indoor and outdoor animals, no matter the species. It's not practical to bring every animal into the house, but there's no reason we can't bring the comforts of home outside to them. Cyndi Bird is a certified Equine Sports Therapist and is a retired dog groomer. The Gift of Powerful Conversations When someone talks to you about a problem they need to resolve, isn’t it tempting to give advice? After all, we’ve been there and have so much wisdom to share! But then what happens? The other person stops talking. Their eyes glaze over as the conversation becomes all about us which is not helpful at all. The answer? Just listen. Then ask some questions to help the person come to their own solutions. And watch them GROW in confidence! This is the coach approach to conversations – empowering and respectful, and a great way to build stronger relationships. You can use it with your family, colleagues, staff and friends. (It sure worked with my two adult children when I talked less, listened, and stayed curious instead of going all mother – knows - best on them!) The coach approach has an easy way of organizing questions that follows the acronym, GROW. G stands for “goals”. Ask something like, “What are you hoping to achieve? What will that bring you? What is most important to you right now?” This helps the person get clear and focussed. R explores their present “reality”. Ask “What’s happening for you in terms of this problem? What have you tried so far? What if you don’t do anything about this right now?” O is an opening for “options” or solutions. Questions like “What have you done in the past that worked? What is non-negotiable? What is a crazy option?” (Crazy might contain some creative yet realistic parts to a solution.) W is the clincher as it holds the person accountable to their action plan. W stands for “What will you do to solve your problem? What is the first step you can take that will make a difference? And when?” Then ask: “On a scale of one to ten, how committed are you to your plan?” If they confidently say nine or ten, that shows they truly own it and will likely follow through. If they say six to eight, ask “What would it take to get you up to a ten?” Maybe they need to do some research, ask someone for help or deal with an obstacle first. But if the answer is five or lower, then more conversation is needed. Possibly the solution they came up with isn’t realistic; or what they identified as the problem is not really the problem. If so, then the conversation starts all over again, following the GROW model. Here are some tips to strengthen this coaching approach: first, stay curious. It will keep you out of your judging mind and help you come up with your own version of GROW questions. Secondly, if the person stops talking, let the silence be. Lots of processing can happen in that silence. Finally, at the end of the conversation, acknowledge the other person. It could be for their insights, or their creative problem solving, or their inner strength. And silently acknowledge yourself for guiding someone to their own wisdom and creativity. You may be surprised how empowered YOU feel after offering the gift of powerful questions and heartfelt listening. Liz Wouters is a Certified Coach and also trained in psychology, conflict management, adult education and nursing. Contact her at lwoutersca@yahoo.ca to arrange individual or group coaching sessions. Tow Hill Cannery History expands our perspective in such a way that when you know the past stories of a particular building, location or area, you will always view it with so much more meaning, appreciation and awe. This is the case with the Tow Hill Cannery. From 1924 to 1930, it was located on the Hiellen River, across from where the current Hiellen Longhouse Campground now exists. The next time you travel to this area, take a moment to ponder the fact that from 1924 to 1930, there was once a very productive razor clam producing community in that very location!

worked especially hard…along with driving them on the beach, they were always loaded with people, clams and supplies and they were continually breaking down. At one point a new clam harvesting technology was trialed in the form of “Clem” the monster clam digging machine. As written on the back of a picture taken by Howard Phillips in and around 1928, “It was said that Clem had been well designed and was quite good harvesting the razor clams. Its main problems seemed to be the wheels. Too small, the weight and vibration caused the unit to sink in the soft sands. On one trial run, without pushing the machine, Clem harvested 2,800 lbs. of razor clams in one hour. While public pressure had no doubt contributed to its demise, it was also felt that its huge weight would crush the paper thin baby razor clams. Eventually it was returned to BC Packers, Vancouver, dismantled and sold for scrap.”

At the time, a self-contained community of 300 people operated the Tow Hill Cannery each year from March to June, and it was the main livelihood during those months for what are now Masset and Old Masset. There were some fifty odd buildings together with a post office, store and a small school! School hours were “after the dig”. Younger children helped out by picking up the clams and the older ones were soon promoted to a shovel. The razor clam, with its tendency to burrow deeply in the presence of danger, is a tricky fellow and can be hard to capture. Harvesting the clams was primary done with backbreaking hand digging.

In the 1920’s a car was a rare commodity, so the company brought in five Ford trucks, all Model T’s…all fitted with an extra transmission that enabled them to gear down to a snail’s pace. These trucks

After the laborious chore of cleaning off every speck of black and every grain of sand, the razor clams were minced in a grinder and then injected into a can which was then passed through a steam box to seal them with a lid. Although the pay was nothing to write home about, it offered many folks a chance to pick up some work at a time n history when paid work was very hard to come by.

This article was adapted from a recollection written by Sam Simpson, the son of one of the Tow Hill Cannery’s founders, E. H. Simpson. It appeared in the Vol.1 No.1 issue of “This House has many people”; an independent quarterly magazine published a few moons ago by Simon and Cynthia Davies.

Reading On The Rock

Take the TRC Challenge

BC author Jennifer Manuel is challenging Canadians to mark National Aboriginal Day – June 21 –by pledging to read the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, or TRC, was formed to redress the legacy of residential schools and advance the process of Canadian reconciliation. Its final report covers the history and legacy of Canada’s residential school system and includes 94 calls to action. It’s 382 pages long – about the same length as a novel. Manuel says it’s an incredibly important

document for anyone who cares about the relationship between First Nations and non-First Nations. “If we care about our country, if we care about our fellow citizens, we should all be putting down whatever we’re reading and read the TRC report before we continue reading anything else,” she told CBC radio.

You can sign up for the challenge and find an easy link to the final report at trcreadingchallenge.com . Also, if you are interested in forming a local online reading club to

Cool Water: Leaves you thirsting for more! By T.M. Ooishi

Cool Water by Dianne Warren could be described as an authentic gritty depiction of Saskatchewan rural life. Many members of the VOPC book club found this an easy and refreshing book in contrast to the previous book club selections. Members loved the historical features, characters and the initial premise of the book. Some members voiced that the novel was reminiscent of a narration by Stuart McLean. However the lack

8

of depth and the unresolved finale left feelings of disappointment, mediocrity and disengagement to this story. The epiphany of the night came when the demise of a character was uncovered. The book club’s next book is The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Our next meeting will be in the Port Clements’ Seniors Room on May 30 at 7:30pm. Come one! Come all! Bobblehead Road Kenny Williams braces the fence at K‘aasda Gandlaay Copper River.

submitted by Haida Laas/Graham Richard

In anticipation of this year’s returning taaxid sockeye, Fisheries staff headed down Bobblehead Road to K’aasda Gandlaay Copper River Tuesday, April 11. The team was there to install a fence that helps fisheries staff count returning taaxid to monitor the health of the population. The annual return of taaxid to Haida Gwaii brings such excitement that the month of May is named Taaxid Kung, or Sockeye Moon. Consequently, Haida have gone to great lengths to manage the river’s population for generations. The late morning sun fringed the silhouettes of large beach boulders in gold as the team drove along the northern shore of K’aasda GawGa Copper Bay. Many of the boulders have been used as markers throughout history, and have their own names. Two in particular are credited with teaching our ancestors how to fish in the river. Family roots in K’aasda Gandlaay span centuries, and names taken from the area are still cherished and revered. At one time the area supported as many as four villages: ‘Laanaay Llnagaay Village Town, Ts’iiGuugii.ga Llnagaay Place where people landed to dwell forever after, ‘Laana

GaayGaagings Town that has water going over it, and K‘aasda Llnagaay. As we approach the river we pass the cabins and homes of families that have come here to fish year after year. Along the way Kenny Williams recounts the endless jokes and adventures of the past, memories that stir such excitement for the approaching salmon run. When we arrive at K’aasda Gandlaay, fish biologist Mark Spoljaric gets into a dry suit while the rest of the team dons waders and rain-gear. Alder leaves shatter the morning light, scattering it across the river bottom and illuminating spray from the powerful current that ushers forth from beneath a fallen hemlock tree upstream. The fence consists of 37 sections of stainless steel bars that are about ten-bytwo feet each. Each section is held down on its up-stream end by hooks embedded in the river’s bottom. Triangular props lift the down-stream end of each section out of the water, preventing returning taaxid from escaping upstream. The down-stream end of each section is floated with a large square of foam enabling the fence to rise and fall with the tide. Once the team wrangles it into

place, the fence will herd returning taaxid into a route where fisheries staff can count them as they pass by. The count ensures the K’aasda Gandlaay’s taaxid population is strong and determines how long the fishery will remain open. Spoljaric plunges into the strong current, crossing the river on the cedar “sill” that spans its bottom. Hooks embedded in the river floor will hold the fence in place, but first Spoljaric needs to remove a year’s worth of collected sand and debris. As he digs away spiraling clouds of sparkling silt rise, then disappear, clearing the water. Each shovel-full releases a rich and powerful odor – the lingering memory of last year’s run. Bit by bit, Williams and his assistant bring the pieces of fence down to the river’s edge. Spoljaric pulls the pieces into the water with a splash, and then hauls the large, heavy sections through the current to the far side of the river where they are held in place by the hooks. Some are broken or bent, so each of the sections must be lifted high above the head and shaken back and forth to coax it into place. It takes a lot of slipping, tripping, splashing, and soaking to get the job done, but bit-by-bit, the 37 sections of fence are hauled through the current, placed into position, and set onto the hooks. Some hours later Williams and Spoljaric wade along the fence’s downstream edge to hammer braces finally into place. These will hold each section to its neighbour so that they will all rise and fall on the tides together. Assistants follow behind and tighten the bolts that hold the braces. Schools of fry have already taken refuge in the divot the team dug from the sand. The tiny taaxid flit carelessly between the steel bars, wheeling in a school no wider than a dipnet. These are the young of last year’s run. Soon they will head down-stream where they will enter the open ocean and we will see them again in four years when they return to this very spot to spawn. The team finishes up just in time as rainy weather and cold wind begins to whip downstream. In a few weeks fisheries staff will return to the fence to count returning salmon to ensure taaxid populations are strong before harvesting begins this year.

KARATE KIDS EARN MEDALS AT BURNABY TOURNAMENT

A keen group of karate students travelled from Queen Charlotte to Burnaby late last year to take part in the Sato Cup tournament, giving them the opportunity to compete against other students studying the same style of traditional karate. The students fundraised to help pay for part of the trip – even taking part in a local trivia contest organized by Literacy Haida Gwaii where the other competitors were mostly adults. When they won the contest, they added the prize money to their funds to support their hotel costs.

Five members of the Haida Gwaii Shito-Ryu club made the trip to Burnaby for the tournament, and four of them earned medals. The tournament was an official one, sanctioned by Karate BC, and the students relished the opportunity to

watch various styles of karate, observe high quality practitioners, and meet other youth with similar interests. It was a great experience!

The Haida Gwaii Club is affiliated with Karate BC and Sport BC, which means members can compete at provincial, national and even international levels. However, travelling to competitions from Haida Gwaii is expensive, and requires big fundraising efforts. For the Sato Cup tournament, the club applied to the Gwaii Trust for a Youth Grant to help cover the cost of flights to Vancouver, and were awarded $5,000. Gwaii Trust Youth Grants provide funding to non-profit organizations on Haida Gwaii for educational and/or recreational services aimed at youth. In addition to the karate club trip, we have

Congratulations to Haida Gwaii Shito-Ryu club members Greta Romas, Isabelle Romas, Olivia Favreau, Noah Munt and Meaghan Munt!

funded school trips to Limestone Island, island-wide youth conferences and a song-writing workshop for teens. In general, we are interested in applications that build relationships, support opportunities for youth in sports, culture, arts and outdoor activities, reduce barriers to participation, and promote youth leadership. Decisions on Youth Grant applications are made by our Youth Board – a group of eight young people who represent all the communities of Haida Gwaii.

Our next youth grant deadline is June 1. Please see our website at gwaiitrust.com for additional details about this program.

CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF ARTS GRANTS

An upcoming art show at the Haida Gwaii Museum will showcase works created by artists who have received Gwaii Trust grants. “Reflections – Celebrating 15 years of the Gwaii Trust Arts Program” opens on June 3, and will be on display for the summer season. A partnership between the museum and the Gwaii Trust Arts Committee, the show will highlight a wide variety of work, including painting, weaving and writing. Over the past 15 years, 70 artists and 25 organizations have received arts grants from the Gwaii Trust, nurturing new and traditional forms of artistic expression. In total, 33 artists accepted the invitation to show their work in this new exhibition. Everyone is invited to the opening, set for Friday, June 3 at 7 pm.

KEEPING HAIDA GWAII WHITE-NOSE SYNDROME FREE Submitted by The Research Group on Introduced Species

White-nose Syndrome (WNS) was introduced into North America in 2006. It is a fungal disease which grows on hibernating bats, forcing them to wake from their slumber to groom the fungus from their face and wings. Ultimately, these bats die of starvation from waking too many times during their long winter sleep. Until recently, the fungus did not occur west of Ontario. But just a few weeks ago, a bat in Washington state just west of Seattle was confirmed to have died from WNS. Because WNS has caused catastrophic mortality in eastern bat populations - now estimated to have killed over 6 million bats – this is of great concern to bat populations coast to coast. While the sudden jump to the West Coast puts bats at risk, Haida Gwaii may prove to be a refuge from the disease due to its remote location and relative low frequency of bats moving between the islands and the mainland. The fungus that causes White-nose Syndrome is often unwittingly spread by humans – especially those that enter caves or handle bats in infected areas. Bats comprise 40% of the native mammal species that are resident on Haida Gwaii, and they are very important to our ecology. Bats are our primary nighttime insect predators, and can eat up to half of their body weight in

insects in one night. They control many pest species, such as mosquitos. There are four main actions that people can take to help in managing the risk of WNS on Haida Gwaii: 1. Do not enter caves on Haida Gwaii for any reason 2. Report bat roosts (natural or in buildings) with multiple bats. 3. Report any sightings of bats during winter months. 4. Collect any dead bats (wear gloves and bag the carcass) for disease testing. Increased surveillance by the public is also key in tracking the presence or spread of the disease. Unlike the bats of eastern North America, western bats are not known to inhabit large hibernacula, but rather may roost in small numbers in dispersed locations such as rocky crevices or large trees. Because of the small size of colonies in western Canada, few roosts are known, and public reports are the most effective way of gathering information on roost sites. Increased numbers of bats flying in the winter may be a sign of WNS. When collecting dead bats, keep in mind that the fungus does not pose a risk to humans, but there is always a small risk of rabies – so please

wear gloves while collecting bats and avoid touching the bat directly. Please contact Berry Wijdeven, Species at Risk Biologist (250-5596245), Lucy Stefanyk, BC Parks (250-557-4390) or Stu Crawford, CHN (250626-3302) so that we can collect the bat for disease testing. Bats that are still alive should not be disturbed, but reported immediately. Please report all sightings of bats between November and March to Carita Bergman at

the Parks Canada office in Skidegate (250-559-6313) Lastly, if you know of bats inhabiting buildings, there are a number of good stewardship techniques one can employ to ensure a healthy bat population. These sites may also provide locations for sampling for the fungus that causes WNS, a procedure that can be accomplished quickly with the appropriate swab kit. Contact any of those listed above for more info.

Community Building on Haida Gwaii Recently, a group of like-minded people approached and received the approval from the Village of Port Clements Council to pose several community building questions to the people of Port Clements, via this month’s issue of the VOPC newsletter. With two columns, one for Port Clements and one for Haida Gwaii as a whole, the questions posed were “Who are we?”, “What is unique about our community?”, “What are our essential traditions?”, “What do we wish to preserve…what is it about what we want to preserve that is important to us?” and “What do we want to carry forward into the future”. We look forward to reporting an overview of the results, once they are available, in future Planetary Management Haida Gwaii articles. Choo Cha Chaz Sometimes the raging Southeaster from the past couple of nights left huge rollers as whitecaps on the Skidegate shoreline. When I was a kid, we had a group of young fellows that loved to use the huge rollers as skiff surfing called “Choo Cha Chaz”. Racing along like seals on the rollers, rowboats and skiffs could be seen carrying wide-eyed kids. Worried parents watched from windows or porches of the homes and some men came to the beach area to be on hand. Even as young children, we already had the boat handling skills to be able to launch the skiffs in pounding surf. Timing is so important and we had to stand, ready to launch, as soon as the breaking waves slowed enough to do so. Sometimes two kids to a skiff, we would row like mad to break over the incoming whitecap before it caught you too close to shore…where the breaking whitecap might dump into and sink your skiff! Once in the clear, in safer and deeper waters, then the whole game of Choo Cha Chaz happened. The best place for this game was at the North Creek delta area. Some kids would be using the much-prized double ender 18’ rowing skiffs. We would have side by side boat races in the surf and jump back and forth and scrap away like pirates. Kelp became our ammunition as we battled with cannons back and forth. When we got too close to shore we would have to race back out before the whitecap rollers swamped us. We would get totally soaked in these games and the watching parents would be just…having…kittens, until they could not take it anymore. Then, they called us all in to put away the skiffs. Although there were plenty of scraped extremities from beach barnacles, a lot of black eyes and plenty of soakings, no one got hurt in all of those crazy activities. Part luck and part due to knowledge - we all knew what to do and we did so in a blink of an eye - thus saving many friends from bad injury. Talk about Sea Worthy Cowboys!!!

History Worth Repeating This childhood story is part of what makes me who I am today and why I like to shine as much light on our youth today as I can. Back then, we all had a playground growing up. It was called “outside”. “When children are encouraged to attune with nature in ways applicable to their daily life, they become perceptive and sensitive to feeling nature beyond the visual, and can truly connect and love their world and their place in that world.” Teacher, Kelly Johnson

Horoscopes for May 15th to June 15, 2016 Aries (March 20-April 19) As you can see around you, the wildflowers are starting to bloom. What does it take for them to pop above the soil, head for the sun, sprout buds and bloom? A little attention by nature is all. I ask you, dear Aries, to allow the simple things in life to matter now. Give yourself a little attention with nature. Walk in the woods, pet your cat or swim with dolphins. Do anything that brings you back to the basics of life. Key Words: Faith, Lay Low, Believe Taurus (April 19-May 20) What are you waiting for, dear Taurus? Act now! I don’t mean act out, but take that first step toward your purpose. It’s possible that you have friends or family with opposing viewpoints that could try to sway you a different direction than you are actually traveling. Don’t get angry about this, just ignore it and choose where you are going anyway. Key Words: Assertive, Determination, Passion Gemini (May 20-June 21) Guess what, dear Gemini? You will appear to others as more stable, loyal, and grounded than you actually are. Be sure that when you give someone your word that you can follow through on it. They will be counting on it even if you just said it in passing. It’s great to multitask and we all know that Gemini’s are famous for this, but schedule less than you think you are capable of; this way when something unplanned comes up, you will have the time and energy to deal with it. Key Words: Mentor, Truth, Loyal Cancer (June 21-July 22) It may be challenging to stay focused for the next couple weeks, sensitive Cancer. What lies below the surface will present itself to you, but only after you have reflected on it for a while. You are attempting to process the vision that wants to come through you now. Don’t rush it, enjoy the not knowing. It will all become clear soon. Key Words: Patience, Focus, Chill Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) What you started as seedlings a while ago, dear Leo, is about to bear fruit. Is it fruit that you look forward to eating or is it rotting on the vine? Because now it’s the time to evaluate what you hope to do and how you plan on getting there. Write down your personal goals and figure out how to make them a reality. There’s no time like the present to plan for your future. Key Words: Values, Perceptions, Create Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) You may have lots of energy now to devote to your career goals. Set aside some time to address what your mission in life is and how you plan to fulfill these dreams. All it takes is some attention to detail, a passion for life and the motivation to never take no for an answer. Believe that you are worthy of anything you desire, and then move that direction. Key Words: Confidence, Determination, Succeed

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) What is it that you think you believe, dear Libra? Is it the truth or only your perception of the way it is? This is the theme of your life for the next couple weeks. Truth or fiction? I ask that you stay open-minded to the possibility that you don’t know the entire story. Be grateful if someone helps you to understand this. Key Words: Listen, Believe, Perceive Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Getting to the heart of the matter is what you excel at and these next several weeks will find you in deep; hopefully not over your head. You are certainly capable of processing intense experiences but don’t go looking for them. Try to stay centered and aware; ready to help when asked. Your perceptions about the people around you are usually spot on, but they may not be ready to hear the radical truth from you just yet. Be patient. They will come around when they’re ready. Key Words: Trust, Process, Spiritual Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) You may find yourself curious about the lives of others, open to the possibility that the answers you seek are intertwined with your peer group. At the heart of the upcoming weeks ahead, try to balance what you want out of life with what may be different amongst your people. Not everything that you believe is actually true. Some of it is only your perception. Stay curious enough to change your mind as needed. Key Words: Relationships, Understanding, Connect Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) I want to shout out loud, “ParTay!” Capricorn’s can be so productive and driven that it can be hard for them to let go and enjoy. Please think of it like this: relaxing, being creative and feeling grateful in life contributes to great rewards because it recharges your battery to release yourself to fun. So give yourself some much needed rejuvenation, allowing future endeavors to be successful and rewarding. Key Words: Pleasure, Creativity, Joy Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Just below the surface, dear Aquarius, we may find you feeling your way in the dark. It doesn’t mean you don’t know where you are going, only that you need to discover your way back out into the light. Take some time to enjoy going within yourself to become sensitive to what it is that makes you shine. Then shine on! Key Words: Meditate, Nurture, Reflect Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Open-minded wonder may . grab hold of you now, dearest Pisces. Curiosity is a fun trait to have as it brings you to places that you hadn’t even imagined. Research what interests you, ask questions that probe unknown territories and know that what you don’t know is worth learning now. What is it that interests you? Key Words: Networking, Journeys, Synchronicities

108th Annual Hospital Day Sat, June 18 / 10am / Community Hall & Grounds / 134 Bay Street Hospital Day 2016 will be starting in front of the hospital with the parade at 10 am. This year marks the 108th anniversary of our hospital – of our having healthcare givers and maintaining those services faithfully for over a century! Hospital Day has been an annual tradition here on the Islands since 1908, when islanders came together to raise funds to build the first hospital in "Queen Charlotte City." For many years thereafter, the annual Hospital Day provided the only source of operating revenue for the hospital. To this day, Hospital Day continues to provide monies for purchasing healthcare equipment for various healthcare programs all over the Islands, as well as bursaries for medical education. Hospital Day is about bringing neighbors together to share a conversation, a cup of coffee and watching the kids have fun. HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT LOCAL FOOD, ALL YEAR ROUND Submitted by Crystal Holdershaw, Queen Charlotte

Some people don’t know that Isabel Creek Store in Queen Charlotte carries local produce all year round. Although done for a few months now, local kale and carrots can be purchased all through the winter. Now in stock are Haida Gwaii grown, tender and delicious, new spring greens. Yum! At this very moment, there are many, many more delectable and nutritious, local treats growing in fields and greenhouses all around our island communities… and they will be available throughout the growing season at numerous retailers as well as at our four farmers’ markets: Sandspit (Starting June 5th on Sundays/11-1/ALM gazebo), Queen Charlotte (Saturdays/11-2/next to QC Community Hall), Tlell (Starting May 22nd on Sundays/11-2/behind the Fire Hall) and Masset (Fridays/11-3/next to Masset Village Office) To name a few, here are some examples of what local foods are being sold at Isabel Creek Store at this time of year: • Rocking Creek Farm (Tlell): beautiful spring salad greens, bunched radishes, and farm eggs. • Maude Island Farm (QC): certified organic greens which includes amazing lettuce, pea shoots and rainbow chard. They have lots growing in their fields and with this week of sunshine we will be seeing lots of greenery from MIF soon! • The Lavoie Family Farm (Sewell Inlet) had such an amazing year of carrots, we still have local carrots! Plus, alongside the Lavoie’s carrots are their chives…if you have not seen or tasted them, it is worth it! • Island Joe Farm (QC) supplied Isabel Creek with so much kale all winter and spring it was amazing, now there are some delicious tomatoes (that actually taste like tomatoes) and amazing cucumbers (that don’t go bad in two days) growing out on his Island soon to arrive in the store. Many people are counting the days! • St Mary Spring Farm (Lawn Hill) provides the store with fresh farm eggs and now, every Friday, Isabel gets to enjoy another treat from St Mary Spring Farm.... fresh baked sourdough bread, it looks and smells divine; it’s still warm when it arrives and tempts everyone!

Riverworks Farm (Tlell) is busy growing, we had their carrots and potatoes last year, they were so good and we hope to see this year’s crops soon. • Tlell Beach Farms (Tlell) has free range chickens that trek across the beach eating all sorts of beach critters to produce amazing farm eggs for the store. • Daughters of Venus Farm (Tlell) In the next few weeks we will also be seeing some of the Daughter of Venus Farm greens as well as flavorful herbs such as cilantro and basil and medicinal herbs like fresh tulsi (holy basil). • Island Acres Farm (Port Clements) grows huge beets, soon we will seeing those at the store alongside their crunchy sugar peas and superfood parsley. More and more people are now convinced that buying local food is the way to go. Flavor, nutrients and longer shelf lives make locally produced food hot commodities these days. As the demand for local food increases, farming on Haida Gwaii is proving to be a viable industry that is supporting our island economy in a big way…all the while supporting people’s health as well. A win, win for all!
