Haida Gwaii Eyes…Wide Open
Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges
Our Energy Future: Yes, No, Maybe or Next? by Shellene Van der Beke
Challenge: The recent decision of the Federal government to approve the Pacific NorthWest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project has, of course, received mixed responses.
Those that say “yes” to this project moving ahead look forward to the promise of thousands of good paying (hopefully local) jobs and a boosted economy. Those that say “no” disapprove of the environmental dangers, in particular, here in Northern BC, such as serious threats to the wild salmon and marine resources in and around the proposed LNG plant location on Lelu Island. Those who say “maybe” approve of a go-ahead so long as the project’s environmental safeguards are top priority and proven effective. Then, there are those (as described in Pete Moore’s article on page 10) who, no matter what happens, are focusing on the “next” era of safer, cleaner energy alternatives. Proactive Solutions for all: One thing remains true is that the future, for those who are blessed to see it, is shared by all. Everyone wants a healthy economy. We all want a roof over our heads and food in our bellies. Many, if not most, sentient beings understand that caring for the natural world around us, is part of what keeps us alive. So, how do we move forward, together, successfully? In this world of so many distractions, perhaps it is best to go back to the simple foundations of what any society needs to function well:
Self: all the good of the world comes from the good within each and every one of us. A daily practice of self care is essential, in whatever ways work for each individual…good food, peace of mind, a calm and joyous spirit and a feeling of connection with others (even one, healthy connection can result in a world of happiness). Family: nurture values that sustain us all - honesty, holding space for each other (as talked about in Cyndi Bird’s article on page 7) non-violence, patience and forgiveness - to err is indeed human. Community: participating is key - in whatever things align with what a person admires and likes to do. Encouraging diversity along with common goals and values makes for a wonderful place to call home. Why not genuinely listen to the opinions of others? And again, as with family, be patient - our little “Romes” don’t happen overnight. Country: insist on honest and transparent governments, believe in individual rights and take special care of the young and the elderly. Planet: cherish it.
“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” Henry Ford ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Do you have a solution-based topic, thought or project you would like to share? The Power of Song Many of us are secret “sing-in-the-shower” people. We enjoy singing but only when no one can hear us. When we were young, we were probably told our voice was not good or our timing was off. Sadly, a hurtful message like that can shut us down for the rest of our lives. Not only did we stop singing, it’s possible we decided from then on that we also couldn’t speak our truth. But what if singing is a natural and innate activity that we are meant to do, and secretly want to do? And that it can be a doorway into unknown parts of ourselves, if we dare risk to be vulnerable? Here is my story about being vulnerable and singing with strangers in an athletic club steam room in Victoria. Some background: I had been singing in choirs and taking singing lessons for many years, to overcome my shame of my voice. Two years ago, I courageously took a bigger risk and signed up for improvisational singing classes and one transformative improv workshop (with David Hatfield from Vancouver who is coming to Haida Gwaii – see side bar!) Improvisation or “improv” means what you sing (or say) is totally unplanned and unrehearsed. You trust the sound or words that pop up in the moment, and offer it up to the group. It’s scary, risky and exhilarating. You learn a lot about your unique voice and the music inside you. Something in me was set free after that workshop. So free in fact that I began to invite strangers in the steam room to sing with me! The ceramic tile floor, walls and ceiling of the steam room created fine acoustics so any sound we made sounded exquisite, as if we were professionals singing in a fine cathedral. Of course, when I first asked people (men and women of all ages) to sing with me, they would inevitably say, I can’t sing. So to start, I invited them to sing one note only, and I would add a simple harmony. The result was surprise, and excitement. We sounded beautiful in that hot, steamy room. It didn’t stop there. We added more notes and harmonies and sometimes we sang full songs together. People were surprised to hear their own beautiful voice. Occasionally, honest and touching conversations emerged out
of these shared singing moments. People spoke about their life challenges or dreams, where only a few moments before, we had been strangers. Singing together brought us closer. Studies show that singing makes us feel good, whether we sing well or not. “Feel good” hormones or endorphins and oxytocin – the bonding hormone - are released when we sing, especially if we sing with a group of people. Some members of the Gwaii Singers Community Choir in Queen Charlotte said they go to choir practice every week as much for learning and practicing the songs as for feelings of well-being and belonging. Research tells us positive connections with others lead to decreased anxiety and stress. Singing can help relieve chronic pain and boost our immune systems. Singing will also help us reconnect with that little child within us who is joyful, unashamed, and happy to let the world hear their true, free voice.

Sharing Space and Time
What sharing your life with another being is really about The connection that resulted from this quiet was unbelievable. Even my daughter’s mare, who hates leaving her herd, decided that spending time with me was more fun than being in the paddock eating grass with her buddies. Instead of her usual calling, pacing and trying to find a way back to her friends, she stayed with me, away from the herd and we shared an afternoon snack; her with her grass, me with my grapes. When time came for her to return to her friends she refused to go, she wanted to stay with me. No horse of mine has ever refused to go back into the pasture with their herd. This moment touched me in a way that has changed how I will interact with my animals for the rest of my life.
More and more of us are becoming aware of the need to hold space. If you haven’t heard of holding space yet, then imagine your heart (or emotional center) as a vessel. Very simply put, this vessel only has so much space to hold emotional commitment. The concept of saving space suggests that we can set aside space in our emotional center for ourselves and our loved ones.
I now set aside time everyday during routine interactions such as feeding and grooming to offer them access to the space I hold for them. While it’s not always easy to turn off the chatter of my mind, the critters I share my life with enjoy the effort, while our bonds continue to grow. Ta ta for now Cyndi
When we make the commitment to share our lives with another being, whether that means sharing our living space (physical space like a house or yard) or not, we also share our emotional space. For the most part, sharing physical space is relatively easy, with the exception of losing your place in bed to a cute and furry friend! Sharing emotional space, however, can be more difficult. Recently our horses demonstrated what it means to an animal when we take the time to hold space for them. During a routine morning groom in the sunshine I focused solely on being in the moment with them. The rays of sun shone on my face, the cold bite of the fall air on my skin, I could hear their breath with mine, and most importantly, the quiet of my mind. The whole day passed and I practiced being in the moment with all our animals. Quietly enjoying their company; just being. They showed their appreciation by being more affectionate, more playful, and most importantly more willing to spend time with me.

A Building with a History of its Own The story behind the Dixon Entrance Museum
The Dixon Entrance Maritime Museum in Masset is the home to a great number of pieces of Haida Gwaii History. Extensive photo archives and physical collections show the change the islands have gone through in the modern era. However, one of the most interesting pieces the museum has to offer is the building itself. Now standing for over 100 years, the Dixon Entrance Maritime Museum building was built in Masset in 1914 as the town’s first hospital. Dr. A Ross Fraser came as the first medical missionary in 1909 after having served in South Africa. The medical tent he had set up was crushed by a fallen tree following a big storm.
In 1914 however, Dr Charles Graves (the next doctor to work in Masset) was able to move his patients into a new building – one that would become a permanent building in the community. The building was the first in Masset to have a cement foundation, playing into its long life in the community. Its exterior has remained relatively unchanged. It now serves as the local museum.
Following this, the next hostpital was built as a log cabin.
These photos are courtesy of the Dixon Entrance Maritime Museum. They are located on 2172 Harrison in Masset. Don’t miss their Christmas Social on November 12th. For more information call 250-626-6066.

Our Beloved
Raven
Trickster, creator of celestial bodies and humans, bringer of the light, the mythical stories of the Raven are globally stupendous and locally intimate. As head symbol of one of the main clans on Haida Gwaii, the Raven extends it’s influence into artwork, ceremony, family, and of course daily Island life as we interact with each other throughout the day. The deep guttural voice often lets us know Raven is around even before we see it’s slick black silhouette come tumbling through the air, often with a lifelong mate. They may alight in a tree and chatter on in entertaining croaks, gurgles, and bill claps. Some personal observations of Raven are: Watching four Ravens, standing in a circle in the fresh snow, taking turns doing back flips while the others seemingly crack-up with laughter; smelling the sweet musky smell of their feathers after a group of 25 flew low over me as they searched for food along the tide line; perhaps the most sensitive moment, (other than seeing them delicately preen each other), was watching an Eagle slowly flying down the middle of a quiet Tow Hill Road holding a car-killed Raven in it’s talons with a Raven at each wing-tip softly moaning. Acrylic on canvas, “Ravens at Yakan Point”, by Thomas Arnatt, inspired by the playfulness of the raven.

Q&A
With Denver Cross
New Program Manager at the Skidegate Haida Immersion Program What kind of projects are you working on right now? Right now we’re just doing a lot of translations requests. So if someone from the community or band council, or places like that, come in and ask for place names to make signs, those are translation requests for us. Also, for SFU, we’re making a Haida language mobile application. We are partnered with them to develop that. How long had you worked at SHIP before? I worked there for two school years in 2012 and 2014 as an Information and Communication Technology Assistant. I was kind of just working on the side, helping the elders with
their daily routine and also helping Luu (Kevin Borserio) with whatever we’re recording. How has the transition been? It’s a drastic change. Like any other job you’re new to there are difficulties with the transition. But we’re working on it; the elders are patient with me. SHIP is a crucial part in keeping Haida culture strong. How does it feel to be so involved in this? Ohhh living the dream! It’s great. We’re just helping them and being around them to help revitalize the Haida language as best as we can.
Do you have any goals you are working towards during your time at SHIP? I just want to continue what SHIP has been doing for the past 18 years: document and revitalize the language. I want to do my part while I can and fill Luu’s (Kevin Borserio) shoes as best as I can. Night classes for people in the community have started. How have these been going? I’ve just dropped in as a student of it. Aay Aay is the one who is volunteering his time to run the night class. He does it every Monday from 7pm to 9pm. It’s open to anybody. When one chapter ends, another one begins. This past summer, the fight against Enbridge and the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline seemed to come to an end when the project was rejected by the Federal Court of Appeal. For the coastal communities of British Columbia that near-unanimously stood against the project, Haida Gwaii included, the decisions was one of celebratory magnitude. Giving the ruling even more pertinence was that it specifically cited the lack of consultation with First Nations, stating “It would have taken Canada little time and little organizational effort to engage in meaningful dialogue on these and other subjects of prime importance to Aboriginal Peoples. But this did not happen.” The final nail seemed to be hammered into the Northern Gateway coffin when it was announced that neither the Federal Government nor Enbridge would appeal the Federal Court’s decision. For Haida Gwaii, it felt like the end of an era. From the JRP hearings to now has been a long and constant battle, so the ruling that came this summer felt like a victory. But as one chapter closes, another one, unfortunately, begins. On September 27th, Petronas’ proposed Pacific Northwest LNG (short for Liquified Natural Gas) was given the green light from Trudeau’s Government. The project would be based in and around Prince Rupert, with an export terminal on Lelu Island, making it a very legitimate concern to many on Haida Gwaii. But as was made apparent during the years fighting against Enbridge, Haida Gwaii is not afraid to show its true colours. The LNG decision came just a few short days before the much anticipated Royal visit. With news teams from all over the world gathered, an image of Will and Kate in a canoe paddled by no LNG shirts went across the globe.
A New Chapter of
Resource Economy On Haida Gwaii By Pete Moore
10
With this seemingly constant succession of oil and gas projects making their way into British Columbia, the time for Haida Gwaii to break onto its own path is drawing evercloser. Sending a message and making the island’s stance heard and seen around the world is huge, but it is now time to start taking action towards making the islands more selfsustainable. This is already happening, and has actually been in the works for many years. Haida Gwaii local Laird Bateham recently unveiled his newest invention in Port Clements to a largely sceptical audience; as everyone was leaving however, it was clear that most were very excited about what they had just seen. As part of Yourbrook Energy System’s LTD, Bateham’s tidal power pump is a “large, low RPM, variable stroke pump driven by tidal currents to supply electrical turbines,” as they explain on their website. The system consists of a water-wheel pump that is mounted on a barge, and designed to work in shallow water. It’s catch is that it is connected to a separate freshwater reservoir, creating a pressurized cyclical flow of water which would power the turbine during slack tides.
Because of our isolation, especially at the north end, our electricity is diesel generated, which is a very dirty form of electricity. I think that anything we can do that reduces our reliance on diesel generated electricity is good for the islands and good for the environment in general” - Kim Mushynsky
Solar panels being installed on the George Brown Recreation Centre, Skidegate The unique system is garnering international attention, with interested partners and buyers making contact from around the world. First and foremost, however, the company is looking to keep the project based in Haida Gwaii. The goal is to produce, and have the product be manufactured, on island, and to create jobs on Haida Gwaii explains Clyde Greenough, Chief Operations Office, Director, and PartOwner of Yourbrook. So far, they have achieved this goal, as everything to this point was developed locally. Right now, the prototype that was on display in Port Clements in August is out for testing. Other than a few needed upgrades, “the prototype has performed exceedingly well,” says Greenough, adding that they are doing another tow test this week. All in, to become fully functioning Yourbrook needs 24 million dollars. For perspective, that is 2 years worth of diesel on Haida Gwaii. Although only a handful of people attended the Yourbrook open house, tons of people from all over Haida Gwaii have noticed that solar panels have been popping up on the roofs of public buildings across the island. What seemed to occur so suddenly has actually been in the works since 2012 says Kim Mushynsky, CAO of Port Clements who spearheaded the project. “In early 2012, a funding opportunity came up from the Union of BC Municipalities called the Srategic Priorities Fund, and the key deliverable for projects they would fund is a reduction in your carbon footprint,” she explains. The original plan was to convert all the streetlights on island to LED, but after having to re-evaluated due to complications with BC Hydro, it was instead decided to install solar panels across each community. “Because of our isolation, especially at the north end, our electricity is diesel generated, which is
a very dirty form of electricity. I think that anything we can do that reduces our reliance on diesel generated electricity is good for the islands and good for the environment in general,” says Mushynsky. As is clear in what Mushynsky says, a big part of the inspiration behind the project was getting Haida Gwaii off of diesel power - a goal shared by newly formed local organization Swiilawiid. “Swiilawiid Sustainability Society launched in early October as a new non-profit working on Haida Gwaii. With a mission of helping to build healthy, resilient and thriving communities, Swiilawiid’s first project is focused on reducing the Islands’ reliance on diesel energy,” explains the society’s coordinator Valine Crist. Crist explains that the ongoing battle against oil and gas tankers was one of her motivations in helping to found the new society. “We’ve all invested so much in defending these Islands and our way of life from supertankers. I’m thrilled to be involved with this fledgling organization that is committed to creating the energy future that we want here on Haida Gwaii,” she says. During the Q&A period at the Yourbrook’s open house, Greenough explained how he sees Yourbrook Energy Systems as “a new chapter of resource economy on Haida Gwaii.” With many other resource based economies on Haida Gwaii beginning to decline, and with constant pressure from oil and gas companies, Haida Gwaii needs to begin transitioning towards a self-sustaining way of life. With projects like Yourbrook Energy Systems, installing solar panels on public buildings, and decreasing Haida Gwaii’s reliance on diesel, the cleaner energy movement on Haida Gwaii has begun. Because when one chapter ends, we need to already have started the other one.

At Your Service: Night Owl U-Brew Meet Jesse Embree, owner of the newly opened Night Owl U-Brew. Embree managed the Misty Isles U-Brew with Jill Drover for 3 years, starting in April of 2011. Now, after a 2 year break from the U-Brew, he has taken over the business, and reopened the doors for eager brewers. Embree has always had a keen interest in beer and brewing, but prior to coming to Haida Gwaii, never had the opportunity to do so himself. After spending 3 years at the U-Brew, and learning how to brew from various kits, Embree is now excited to experiment a little bit with Night Owl and to try and offer more advanced brewing supplies and opportunities down the road. He recently spent two weeks doing a course at the U-Brew in Terrace to learn more about these possibilities. Embree also wants to make the place a more social environment, intending to begin serving coffee and establish a bit of a lounge area, but also hopes that it can become a place where brewers from all over the island converge. Already offering homebrewing equipment, Embree hopes to establish a HG Homebrewers club that could meet quarterly, and wants to create a trading network for those that use the U-Brew. The Night Owl U-Brew is now open for business; their hours are Thursday and Friday 12-7, and Saturday 10-6. Head on down to put on a batch! My Haida Gwaii by Archie Stocker Sr.
My Haida Gwaii, mystic Haida islands ‘neath the western sky. From coastal mountains high can you glimpse snow covered peaks on Haida Gwaii. Far across the sea Haida Gwaii was always calling me. So I returned; for the peace and tranquility of Haida Gwaii I yearned. Dark Haida eyes beckon to me through many lonesome nights. Wished I was there to hold her in my loving arms because I care. When I returned from Tanoo paddling a dug out Haida canoe. Came in with the tide. My Haida sweetheart waits for me on Haida Gwaii. Strong Haida braves paddled their big canoes through wind and waves. To distant shores. Traded with villages far south and north. All along the coast Haida art was cherished the most. They took furs and pelts in trade, then navigated back to Haida Gwaii those braves. Eagle and raven clans dwelled upon these islands long since ancient times. From the distant past totem poles stare out to sea strange spells they cast. Blue ocean and sky standing guard over all of Haida Gwaii. Oh, can’t you see that Haida Gwaii’s the only place on earth for me!

VOPC Book Club discusses living forever and why we deserve to be remembered By T.M. Ooishi Have you ever been completely consumed by something or someone? For author Rebecca Skloot, this is exactly what happened; she devoted ten years of her life to researching and writing The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Easily the most well received book our club has read. Members loved the historical perspective, the lucid medical and scientific aspects and how the true story was researched and captured Henriette’s family, especially her daughter. A passionate discussion transpired about the ethics of science, what it means to be human and the impact of intergenerational racism. Our next book is “The Wreckage” by Micheal Crummey and the next meeting is October 24th at 7:00pm in the Port Clements Senior Room. If you have any questions or would like to join the book club please contact Tina through email at tina.ooishi@gmail.com.

NEW SOCCER NETS MAKE PLAYTIME BETTER IN PORT CLEMENTS
Kids in Port Clements love playing soccer, but they were having a hard time after the goalposts and nets at the school field were removed earlier this year for safety reasons. The nets were old and had become hazardous, explained principal Verena Gibbs. The school field is right in the middle of town and kids and families enjoy playing soccer and other games there before school, during school, after school, on weekends and during holidays, weather permitting. But the lack of nets made it challenging to play regular games, and students said they would really appreciate new ones. The school turned to the Gwaii Trust’s Youth Program for a grant that allowed for the purchase and installation of new nets over the summer. Combined with money from the school and the parent advisory committee, the youth grant of $2,125 covered the cost of the new nets and shipping them to Haida Gwaii. The new nets are high quality and have been permanently installed in the school field, Verena said, so they will last for many years. This project is now giving Port Clements youth more opportunities to play sports, encouraging family and community play, and promoting healthy, active lifestyles. Gwaii Trust Youth Grants provide funding to organizations
on Haida Gwaii for educational and/or recreational services aimed at youth. In general, we are interested in applications that build relationships, support opportunities for youth in sports, culture, arts and outdoor activities, reduce barriers to participation, and promote youth leadership. Decisions on Youth Grant applications are made by our Youth Board. If you have an idea for a great youth project and need some money to make it a reality, check out the full details about our Youth Grants on our web page at gwaiitrust.com.

Meet Laura Sample of Laura’s True North in Sandspit. Laura has been an avid outdoor photographer throughout her life. She has lived in British Columbia for over 40 years, both in the Peace River and Haida Gwaii areas. The advent of high quality digital cameras coinciding with her retirement from teaching provided excellent opportunities for her to pursue her outdoor photography interests. Laura’s favorite subject to photograph is Haida Gwaii Black Bears. Laura’s art cards feature many of her most recent works. There are currently over forty different photos featured on her popular greeting cards. Laura’s photo-board prints are also in demand. Laura notes “The photos on stretched canvas are a very modern way of displaying the nature scenes. The subtle texture of the canvas creates a beautiful depth to the photo. They remind me of oil paintings on stretched canvas.” Traditional paper prints, for framing, are also available. Custom orders are welcome. Laura is currently working on new coffee table photo books, but still has two books available from her limited edition series. Phantoms of the Fog and Mist includes photos of nature and wildlife from the west coast and Haida Gwaii. The book Grizzly includes Laura’s photos of grizzly bears in the Rocky Mountains, the Great Bear Rainforest and the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary. Laura’s photography has been featured in Canadian Geographic, exhibited in Alberta and British Columbia as well as in private collections across North America and Europe.

actually, more often than not, a set of beliefs and programmed responses that we mistakenly attribute as our personal identity. It is not that we’re daft, it’s because society often wants us to think, say and act a certain way, to serve the needs of others. Essentially: buy their stuff.
Things that last…for a very long time. Ego: should it stay or should it go? A very dear friend of mine gave me a little book by Vancouver writer and painter Lisa Rose called “life plain and simple” and on one of the pages, all it says is: l e t g o . Ego is a funny thing. Some say it helps a person define their sense of self…self-worth, self-respect and selfconfidence. Others say ego helps us to describe the reality between our conscious and unconscious mind. There are also those who say that ego is an illusion, that we humanoids put far too much worth in our organic beings and give ourselves considerably too much credit. Some even say, the best possible thing we can do is get the heck out of our own way. As there is plenty of coverage on the importance and relevance of the care of our individual selves, I would like to focus on the illusive perspective. An illusion is something that is different than it appears to be. Nowadays, we are discovering that what we once thought was “who we are” is
So, what can we do to foster a healthier ego...one that serves us for good reasons? First and foremost, in the wise words of Socrates: know thyself. Question everything. Questions such as: Do societal “norms” truly resonate with me? Deeply? If not, then maybe what we wear, or the cars we drive, or the money we make or the media we read or watch doesn’t actually define us. Some other illusion-breaking questions worth pondering: What, in ourselves and others, do we truly admire? Even if it is not the “in” thing, so long as no one is getting hurt, let us hold these attributes dearly. Is winning all that matters? Might participating and just enjoying the journey be just as fun? Where’s the fire? Slowing down might just be a very good thing. What are we genuinely grateful for? May we think and be thankful for them often.
“What we now want most is closer contact and better understanding between individuals and communities all over the earth and the elimination of that fanatic devotion to exalted ideals of national egoism and pride, which is always prone to plunge the world into primeval barbarism and strife.” Nikola Tesla

Horoscopes for Oct 15th to Nov 15th, 2016 Aries (March 20-April 19 Cooperation is key to your journey in the upcoming weeks, courageous Aries. Typically, it’s easy for you to make your life happen, with or without the help of others. But not right now. Begin to network with people who understand your mission in life and are there to help you achieve it. It’s easier than you think to play well with others. Key Words: Friends, Teamwork, Collaborate
Taurus (April 19-May 20) You are just now ready, sturdy Taurus, to look at the deepest issues surrounding your life purpose. What have you been ignoring, hoping it will work itself out? Except it hasn’t. Now is the time to do the hard work required to answer these key questions. I know it sounds like you are in for a doozy of a time; but honestly, these questions and answers are key to your prosperous, successful journey forward. Which may be quite rewarding and timely. Key Words: Determined, Powerful, Intent Gemini (May 20-June 21) Maneuver yourself now, extraordinary Gemini, to pick up all the loose ends in order to finish up any leftover projects. This may mean at work or it could even mean vacation plans. Wherever you do this, create an environment that promotes networking and interacting with others to exchange information. Get serious about looking below the surface to see the truth that’s been hiding there. Key Words: Influence, Participate, Performance Cancer (June 21-July 22) Your tendency to pick the safe and sane path, homebody Cancer, is renowned. But I ask you to choose differently for the next few weeks. It’s important to find your joy and run with it. What elicits happiness, creativity and that feeling that it’s great to be alive? This is where your path lies and as you answer these important questions, it brings you the deep peace you have been looking for. Key Words: Authenticity, Belief, Surprise Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) There’s a bit of a power struggle going on in your mind, dignified Leo. And it goes something like this: How can I withstand the pressures of my mission and life career and stay at the top of my game and still give myself enough down time to recharge my battery? This is your 50 million dollar question. The odds are that the world is demanding more of your time and energy than you can realistically give freely. But it’s up to you to balance this out with some much needed rest. Try 5minute catnaps, walking meditation or anything else that leaves you feeling more relaxed then when you started. Key Words: Peace, Reflect, Feeling Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Life may seem a bit crazy right now, studious Virgo. Like too many balls are juggling in the air all at once. Don’t fret too much about this though; at least you have several options to choose from! It might seem like all of this adds up to huge challenges but in reality, it’s a huge opportunity. How do you meet these challenges optimally? By taking a few, deep breaths, calming down your mind long enough to “hear” the path worth pursuing. Key Words: Connection, Open-minded, Truth
18
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) I know it goes against everything you stand for, artistic Libra, but I am going to tell you this anyway; It’s time to practice being a little bit selfish. You have my permission to take what is rightfully yours. Your time, energy, passion, purpose in life… If you don’t stick up for yourself, nobody else will. I’m not suggesting that you blow everyone out of the water and only think of yourself. Even if I did suggest this, it would be challenging for you to do it. What I’d like to see you do is have a win! Do something that is precious to you, which makes you feel alive and is exactly what you want to do. Key Words: Curiosity, Passion, Purpose Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22 Back pedal for a moment, deep Scorpio. But just for a moment. Feel the energy and creativeness of life. Breathe out the stress and breathe in the vibrancy of the here and now. Afterwards, move forward in a purposeful way. Many opportunities are coming to you and it’s important that you have released some stress that is no longer serving you. This can open up space for moments of clarity and purpose. Key Words: Ambition, Intention, Dreams Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) In order to become clear on your future goals and aspirations, adventurous Sagittarius, it requires you to look within. Ask yourself a few key questions now: What have I swept under the rug that I did not want to look at? How have I underestimated the part that my family played out in my life? How can I move forward to forgive others and myself? If you begin to bring attention to these questions, it will free you up to make valuable plans for your future. And we know you love to feel free! Key Words: Breakthroughs, Healing, Professional
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) The time has come, skillful Capricorn, to take a step back, and contemplate what it all means. I’m not asking you to do nothing, only to slow down long enough to gather the meaning of your steps. What does the past teach you about your future? Answers may lie in travel, adventures or anything that promotes feeling enveloped in another culture. This could be a road trip to Mexico, a European vacation or eating dinner at your local Vietnamese restaurant. Key Words: Perception, Intuition, Qualified Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Sometimes your mind is racing between the past and the future, rebellious Aquarius. And wondering how to make your dreams come true by learning from your past mistakes. This is one of those times. In order to find success for your future, it’s important to take the time to feel. Feel the deep sense of understanding. You are just now ready to consider what those feelings indicate for your future. Do this with a dollop of hope and sincerity, discerning the importance of emotions and what they are telling you. Key Words: Truth, Authenticity, Inspiration Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) You’re in a bit of a quandary, receptive Pisces. When you can feel the emotions of the world, as . you can, how do you shut them out enough to hear what rings true for you? You could watch too many Netflix series’, eat too much ice cream or any other number of activities that promote numbing yourself. Or you could step out in the world and get some expert advice from friends and family, which I highly recommend you do. This is your time to network and compare notes together. Trust that they have your best interests’ at heart. Key Words: Trust, Reliance, Consider

Hello everyone, my name is David Lomax and my family and I just recently moved to Haida Gwaii from Vancouver. I've been in the health and fitness industry for over 15 years and sports and recreation have always been a huge part of my life. I have a young family and being a father and parent I understand the importance of sports and recreation and if it wasn't for all the great coaches, teachers and most of all my parents in my life I wouldn't be the person I am today. With that being said, I cannot express enough the importance for people to share their skill sets with each other, the community and especially, our children. I look forward to hearing from you… what you have to offer to get a program started and what you and your family are looking at getting out of Haida Gwaii Rec. My door is always open, so please come by and say hello at the Tahayghen Elementary School, call me at 250-6265652 or email me qcirec@gmail.com. All of your input and ideas are welcome!
Please note: Extenuating circumstances may result in unexpected program cancellations

HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT Biodynamic Farming on Haida Gwaii Before the word “organic” was associated with healthier food production, “biodynamic agriculture,” developed in the 1920’s, was often utilized to grow food without artificial chemicals. On a biodynamic farm, soil, plants, animals and even the constellations all work together to produce highly successful crops. Here on Haida Gwaii, the proof of biodynamic gardening success is in…well…the “potato and beet pudding”. On a microfarm in Queen Charlotte, with the help of a little sheep manure, one local gardener (who chooses to remain anonymous) recently produced one heck of a root crop including the pictured 1.6kg beauty! According to Haida Gwaiian mythology, this handsome tuber came from a heritage line of potatoes first grown on Haida Gwaii by Robbie Roberts. Roberts was a Scottish farmer who tilled some land in between Charlotte and Skidegate many decades past. The specimen in the photo is characterized by a dark purple and white skin, crisp white flesh and excellent storage qualities.
Photos by FrostyMo
Yet another biodynamic specimen is the pictured beet which is approximately 10.5” wide by 7” tall, grown locally in Tlell and seen with “Frosty Mo”….the sheep. Talk about a one-vegetable meal! The super potato and gigantic beet are both examples that prove that agriculture on Haida Gwaii is not only worthwhile, but flourishing. Such good news for all of our island communities as the more food gardens we grow, and the more farm animals we raise, the more food security will be had by all.
Farmers’ Markets still going strong!
Although the Sandspit farmers’ market has closed for the season, you will still find all kinds of local delights at the Queen Charlotte Farmers’ Market (located next to the QC Community Hall) which will be in operation year round other than a small break over Christmas - every Saturday from 11-2! Delicious and healthy local food can also be found in Masset on Fridays (11-2, on Main Street across from the Island Sunrise Café and NSCU) and the Tlell Farmers’ Market (Hwy 16, 11-2) will be holding its annual “Last Minute Christmas Sale” on Sunday, December 18th. Woo hoo!
