Proactive Solutions for Common Challenges

Federal Election 2015: The Age of Aquarius? by Shellene Van der Beke

Challenge: Low voter turnouts. What does the Age of Aquarius have to do with the election? According to Master Astrologers around the globe, the Age of Pisces and the values it represented: money, power and control, is over. So, much more than the 1960’s song released by the American pop band “The 5th Dimension”, the Age of Aquarius is said to represent love, brotherhood, unity and integrity. If enough people vote, this fall’s election may very well begin a major transition into this new age.

Solutions: For goodness sake, VOTE! (This especially applies to young Canadians) Getting out and voting for who you think will do the best job is the cornerstone of democracy. Why is it important to vote? (As stated on the Elections Canada website @ www.elections.ca)

 When we vote, we choose the representatives who will make the laws and policies that govern how we live together.  The legitimacy of a government lies in the fact that it is elected. Low voter turnouts may call into question this democratic legitimacy.  While democracy involves much more than holding elections every five years, voting is a powerful way to send a message to governments and politicians. The more votes, the more powerful the message is. In other words, every vote counts.  Compared to other forms of political participation, voting does not require a lot of time or effort – in other words, it is one of the easiest ways to have a say in how your society is governed.

Why is the youth vote important?

 According to Elections Canada research, only 37.4% of 18 to 24-year-olds voted at the 2008 general election. That means over 60% of young Canadians did not participate in selecting this country’s government.  When politicians know in advance that most young people don’t vote, they may be less interested in making the efforts to be responsive to issues that matter to younger Canadians.  Some say that young people don’t vote because politicians don’t care about youth issues or don’t talk to young people in their own language. But by not voting, young Canadians lose an important opportunity to make their voices heard by politicians.

Important Event: Check out the All Candidates Debate from 6-8pm both on October 1st at the Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay in Skidegate and October 2nd at the Howard Phillips Community Hall in Masset. At press time, NDP Nathan Cullen, Liberal Brad Layton and Christian Heritage Party Donald Spratt’s attendance have been confirmed. BC Ferries has even added an additional Alliford Bay sailing on the evening of October 1st at 8pm! For more information call Lori Wiedeman at the Village of Queen Charlotte @ 250-559-4765.

Starting an Exercise Program—Smart Move Donna Duffy, RN, BSN, MPH

Your body was designed to move. And it just doesn’t work as well if you don’t move it. If the extent of your physical activity is pushing the buttons on the remote, it’s probably time to make a change. Exercise produces benefits beyond just making you feel and look better. Some benefits that you may not have heard about: Mental health benefits – Recently, exercise has been in the spotlight for its value in treating disorders like depression and anxiety, bipolar disorder, even dementia. By boosting dopamine (the “reward hormone”) in your brain, exercise can even help you fight addiction. Stress management – Exercise lowers the stress hormone, adrenaline, in your blood. It also triggers the release of relaxing hormones, making you feel calmer and even helping you sleep better at night. Makes you smarter – Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and boosts brain chemicals that support the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Cardiovascular exercise can even foster development of new brain cells and improve brain performance in other ways, boosting creativity for example. Makes you happier – Exercise boosts the “feel good” brain chemicals like endorphins in your brain, giving your mood a nice boost. It can also improve your confidence and self-esteem. Pain management – Movement (the right kind) can be amazingly effective for relieving pain. Boosts the immune system – Regular moderate exercise strengthens your immune system, helping you to fight colds and flu’s, even cancer. (But don’t overdo it or you might experience the opposite effect.) I took an informal poll asking people about obstacles to regular exercise. The top three most common responses came as no surprise: lack of time, pain/mobility issues, and just not enjoying exercise. If exercise doesn’t feel good to you, first identify the reason. If pain is the issue, that needs to be addressed. See your doctor if you haven’t already. If you have a chronic pain condition like fibromyalgia, seek a program of activity tailored to your specific needs. Gentle yoga and Tai Chi can be very effective for reducing pain. If the pain is mechanical, a physiotherapist can help with exercises to relieve back pain, shoulder pain, etc. If your mobility is limited, unless you are paralyzed from the neck down there are still things that you can do to get muscles moving. Exercise doesn’t have to be structured. Almost any kind of movement is helpful. Sitting still for too long is the thing to avoid. Try tensing and relaxing different muscles, swinging your limbs, gentle stretching. Move whatever you can move and keep in motion as much as possible. If the only thing wrong is that you just don’t enjoy moving, consider that you may be working against the effects of a bad diet. Sugary foods and beverages, processed foods, all of these can make you feel like sitting on the couch rather than getting up and moving. Also, a body that has gotten used to sitting all the time might take a little time to revive an appetite for movement. But make no mistake, your body does want to move and if you give it the opportunity and don’t push too hard at first, movement will start to feel good. It’s been my experience, and research bears this out, that starting very small and building slowly is the path to success with a new exercise program. Choose an activity that suits you. For some, having an exercise buddy can help make exercise more fun. An enthusiastic pet can help get you up and out the door for a walk. Music can help too. There’s bound to be some music that will rev you up and make exercise more fun for you. Keep it simple; just find ways to move. Dance, walk, tap your toes or sway while watching TV. Almost any movement is beneficial. Go on; reclaim your birthright—you were born to move. It's never too late to become what you might have been. - George Eliot

If This House Could Talk… On the waterfront in Queen Charlotte there is a one of a kind house, located at #205 Bay Street; a house with ample history. It is currently owned (and for sale, if anyone is interested, see below) by recently retired, long time local & volunteer community undertaker, George Westwood. (FYI: Matt Pierce, who assisted George for 15 years, has been passed the torch for this essential community service.)

Queen Charlotte City, circa 1900’s - #205 Bay St. is far right. Royal BC Museum

“It was built as a store in 1909,” reports George, “by then school teacher, Donald Cochrane.” The enterprise was such a success, Donald retired from his teaching profession to run the store, along with his wife, full-time. “Mr. Cochrane, what he used to do,” George relays, “was take an open boat and go out to the West Coast and take groceries to the fishermen up at Hippa Island…which could take him two to three weeks depending on the weather.” During the war time, George’s home also once belonged to Gordon Jolliffe, when the building was then known as Jolliffe’s Store. When asked for a personal story about his classic abode, George recounts that he, at one time, found a 106 year old penny and “During the war, they had the telegraph office in here…and telegraph wires were still up in the attic - found when we were renovating.”

A Humpback whale breaches in west coast waters.

A surreal find on a Haida Gwaii beach

submitted by Haida Laas/Graham Richard

A keen of murrelets, the slosh of breaking waves and the hush of hemlock branches are sounds of Haida Gwaii. To children that live here those sounds are as recognizable as their mother’s voice. The ocean rings with whale songs and the Humpback whale’s is particularly complex song. Some songs last 20 minutes and are sometimes repeated for more than 24 hours straight. Even though these graceful giants are spread out across the Pacific Ocean, they all sing the same song, changing it ever so slightly each year. In the same way, the seven-to-ten minute fin whale songs can carry underwater for hundreds of miles, and be repeated for many days. From one metre away, Fin whale songs reach 186 decibels, 10% louder than a 12-guage-shotgun blast and loud enough to kill human hearing tissue. This August 6, schoolteacher Meagan Cordeiro and engineer Jeremy Lutz were hiking the east beach trail when they found one of these 36 tonne singers washed ashore.

“It felt weird. Walking up the beach, you see lots of logs in the distance, and you think it might be a beached whale. As we came closer to this one, we started to see the fin, and it became clear,” said Jeremy Lutz. “It felt surreal to find such a huge mammal dead.” On the Aug 11, Council of the Haida Nation marine biologist Aggie Cangardel performed a necropsy on the beached humpback with UBC veterinary pathologist Dr Stephen Raverty and Department of Fisheries and Oceans spokesperson Paul Cottrell. The whale was a very young female, under two years old, and measuring 7.52 metres in length. While the cause of death is not obvious, for now, the team is attributing its death to starvation because the stomach and intestines were empty. The team’s conclusion may change upon further analysis. This casualty is just one in a rash of cetacean deaths this summer. Twenty-three large whales including humpback and fin whales washed ashore in the western Gulf

of Alaska and some of the whales were discovered among walrus and seabird carcasses. Along the central coast, four humpbacks have been found dead. On the west coast of Vancouver Island, there are at least two known casualties. While the causes of these deaths are unconfirmed for now it is suspected that toxins from algal blooms may be poisoning the sea creatures. This year the North Pacific Ocean is three degrees warmer than average, and this June a bloom of neurotoxin-producing diatoms stretched from Washington State to California. An unusually strong El Niño current may worsen these effects in coming years. Today, the consequences of rising ocean temperatures, increasing ocean acidity, pollution, and over-fishing are growing more visible. The effects of climate change and human behaviour include the demise of coral reefs, shellfish, starfish, and charismatic mega fauna like whales. Scientists predict that without a significant policy change in how we treat the environment we are on the way to a global mass-extinction event that will eliminate 20-50% of all species by 2100. Anyone spotting a dead whale is asked to call the Council of the Haida Nation at 250.626.3302 or 250.559.4468.

Fall Fair was fabulous

Seen at the Fair: Gwaii Trust arts committee members Sandra Price and Sheila Karrow, along with artist Vernal Bogren Swift, spent time talking to interested islanders about arts grants. Right, Gwaii Trust director Berry Wijdeven joined Jenny Bourne and Sean Baybutt of Haida Wild, Edi Szasz of Kay Bistro, Art Lew of Haida Gwaii Community Futures and Carla Lutner of Northern Savings Credit Union to judge the “Seafood Wars” entries. The grand winner of the $1,000 prize was Dan Peebles with his Haida Gwaii Wild Burger, which included salmon, smoked salmon and prawns. Yum!

A small downpour on the day of this year’s Fall Fair did not dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds of people who gathered at the fairgrounds in Tlell August 2 to listen to good music, eat good food, and admire local livestock, garden produce, baking and crafts. For Linda Louis, one of the Tlell Fall Fair’s organizers, the event is all about bringing people together, building islands community, and sharing knowledge about local agriculture and aquaculture practices. Linda was especially pleased that 1,098 people came through the gate this year – more than last year, despite the rain. And she was happy to report that there was a wide variety of things to do, some old favourites and some new, from chicken poop bingo and goat kissing, to dart throws and interpretive walks with BC Parks.

Events like the Tlell Fall Fair, the Edge of the World Music Festival and Skidegate Days are part of what makes Haida Gwaii such a great place to live. Open to all and organized by volunteers, these festive occasions bring islanders from all communities together, sparking new friendships and renewing old ones. The Gwaii Trust’s Community Events program makes grants available to each community to keep these traditions going strong. As Linda Louis says, every dollar helps when it comes to pulling off a major event. The Gwaii Trust is here to help grow and inspire initiatives like this that improve the quality of life on Haida Gwaii.

DID YOU KNOW? The Community Events Grant provides up to $5,000 annually to each of the Gwaii Trust communities to support public events. There is no deadline date to apply for this grant – it is open all year until the fund is exhausted. See our website at gwaiitrust.com for more details!

Key Words: Success, Adventure, Experience Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) You are typically pretty cerebral, dear Aquarius, with plenty of ideas to burn. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Embrace the next couple weeks in the company of your loved ones, dear Pisces. This is a chance to donate your time to the people that you cherish, to be a great listener and confidant, and to give them room to grow closer to you. You will not lose yourself by doing this. In fact, you will gain insight that you never saw coming. Key Words: Partnership, Companion, Love
