These forces are then transferred to the foundation. (Ching, 2008).

E-learning

Walls also play a huge role in reducing the time of fire spreading. However this is mainly based on the materials

Wall systems The e-learning mentioned that the wall system is primary made out of either: -

Concrete Steel Timber framing

Vertical loads are applied to the wall from various places such as load from the floor and roof as well as lateral force such and seismic forces.

-

Wood walls allows fire to spread easily Masonry walls spreads slowly due the fact that it is more fire resistant

A lintel -

A beam over an opening It is strong enough to transfer the load to adjacent walls

A stud wall system uses structure of timber and steel which is placed close together

Joints There are many types of joints used to connect walls , however one of the joints that was focused on was the control joint

The joint is to ensure that the types of materials used such as bricks that is able to expand or contract based on temperature does not cause the walls do not crack.

 -

The stack bond Weaker compared to the runner bond.

It was also mentioned on how bricks are used to build walls. A few

Steel framing is used to make walls This is usually done through the steel grid system Has a support cladding system to it A girts is used to support the horizontal structure however mullions are used to support the vertical structure. examples mentioned are  -

The running/stretcher bond Forces are distributed throughout the wall hence making it a really strong bond

Steel metals A few general information mentioned on metals in the e-learning are -

The light ball bearings that are able to move in relation to each other Close packed Malleable/ ductile In building, metals are divided in to 2 categories which are Ferrous – contains iron Non-ferrous- more expensive and can resist corrosion

Cold formed -

Light - used as secondary structure

They are also two types of metals used -

Pure metal Alloys – the mixture of two or more metals in which it will develop a new property

An example of an alloy is steel. -

It is iron mixed with carbon The different carbon level creates different types of steel Has a higher tensile strength Is able to be forged into different shapes Uses as a reinforcement

They are two ways on how steel are formed Hot rolled sections -

Stronger Used to carry heavier loads

As rusting is highly required to be prevented in order for the steel or metal does not lose its strength, the e-learning mentioned a few methods used to prevent it  -

Galvanisation The metals located at the top of the series wil be able to corrode more and faster

-

Electro platting, galvanised coating, zinc calume coating.

Tutorial During this week’s tutorial we were required to build a scaled physical model of Queen’s college.

-

  -

If a zinc is placed with the stainless steel, the zinc will rust instead of the stainless steel

Section of the building that was chosen to built

l Rules of thumb Select materials to suit the environment Avoid damp condition Insulate between dissimilar metals (rubber which can separate the metals from the electrical current) Painting or lacquering Painting would cover the metal preventing water and oxygen from contacting the steel A few examples of lacquering is

Tools and Materials used: -

Scaled ruler Cutting mat Cardboard Pushpins Pencil Ruler

-

Cutting knife Masking tape Basalt wood

Other walls are measured and joined together using pushpins.

Process:

The cladding made from wire and the basalt wood is used to make the rafter are then joined onto the structure.

The walls of the section was measured using a scaled ruler at a scale of 1:100 Rafters

The rafters for top of the roof is completed

Joist

We began to start measuring out structures to build the walls for this section The joist is then attached to the bottom of the rafters to separate the ceiling from the roof. Workshop This week’s workshop for the third assignment mainly consist of measuring and cutting structures to build the wall for the section of Glenn’s Murcutt Guest house that we are assigned to.

The top and bottom plate of the section is being measured and cut

Then the studs of the section was also cut and measured

A thicker wood is used for the studs
