TYPOGRAPHY Throughout the semester, we were given the task of creating our own t ypeface using inspiration from a famous artist. My t ypeface was inspired by the paper quilling artist, Yulia Brodskaya. To create my typeface, I chose to do my own script h andwritting to replicate the intricate pieces found in Brodskaya’s work. I then scanned my t ypeface into Illustrator to make it digital and to clean it up so it looked like a typeface. I called it Delicate Papers.

Art Takes On A Whole New Form

YULIA BRODSKAYA TYPE STUDY Adobe Illustrator // Printed // 2014 I created a poster that was to advertise the artist we had chosen in an exhibtion at a gallery of our choosing. I enjoyed creating the poster, because it gave me a chance to play around with the typography such as combining sans serifs and serif fonts and using space and shape to help the viewers eye low through the poster.

TYPE BOOKLET Adobe InDesign // Printed // 2014 The final piece for the semster was to create a Type Booklet. The booklet contained information about the artist and the exhibtion I had previously come up with for the poster. The booklet was my favorite part of the this project, because I was able to play around with different croppings and shapes to reflect a little bit of Yulia Brodskaya’s work has in it.

GRAPHIC DESIGN This section conists of works that I have done in my second and third year of Visual Communications. These graphic works showcase the different styles and techniques I have learned such as type setting, grid structure, and space.

MY PERSONAL PROCESS

ON

Adobe Illustrator // Printed // 2014 I was interested in the idea of mapping. For this project I w 足 anted to give mapping a new meaning, but also show the process I use to get from the start to the end. I used the overlapping of hexagon shapes, with each cluster becoming smaller as I get closer to the end. Each shape is color coded by the mood I was in at each stage of a project.

FINAL PRESENTATION

RECRUITMENT POSTER Adobe Illustrator // 2014 // 16 x 24 in. This recruitment poster was created for the Visual Communications Program at Medicine Hat College to reach out to high school students. I wanted to play with color, so I integrated paint splatters. I then used the same colors to create blocks and have the text sit inside to highlight the courses that the program offers.

The Art of Chinese Porcelain of the Ming and Qing Dynasties

As a practicing artsist and educator in graphic design, Yulin Wang’s comments and anaylsis on China’s Ming and Qing Dynasties porcelain art are a bridge between the porcelain and audience. His keen analysis on porcelain form and aesthetics connect porcelain art to the artist, which has been overlooked in the current collection practice.

PORCELAIN COVER Adobe Illustrator // Printed // 2014 This is a book cover I designed for a fellow Visual Communications Instructor for his book. I was given images of Chinese porcelain art, and I picked this teapot as the main cover element to show the detail within the piece. I thought it was an eye opening piece and it complimented the green background.

DRAWING / PAINTING I combined this section together, because to paint, you have to draw. This 足portion conists of drawings and painting I have produced over the past three years, h 足 ighlighting where my skills have developed along the way to 足becoming an artist.

FLOWER Prismacolor on Paper // 2013 // 2 x 3.5 ft. This is a drawing I did in my first year of Visual Communications. I did this piece using 足variations of greens, blues and yellow prismacolors on a black piece of paper to create a reversed i足mage of a flower in its vase.

SORENTO Prismacolor on Mylar // 2013 // 15.5 x 14.25 in. Working from a photographic source of a Kia Sorento, producing this realistic illustration was challenging to represent the vehicle color and reflections accurately. I really enjoyed the background of the source image and its potential to work in a nother medium.

NECKLACE Graphite // 2013 // 28 x 29 in. For this piece, we were to find an object that had a special meaning, take an 足interesting section of it and blow it up. I wanted to capture the pearly finish on the necklace using dark and light shadows to give it depth and dimension.

AUDREY HEPBURN House Paint // 2013 // 2 x 4 ft. In Drawing 1 we studied the Pop Art style and we could choose an artist from that time period and replicate their style with our own pieces. I chose to use Andy Warhol as my artist, because I like his use of bright and bold colors, so the bright yellow was my way of replicating his style.

DITA VON TEESE Acrylic Paint // 2014 // 4 x 5 ft. For Painting 1, the subject we painted around was to be in a provocative enviornment. I d ecided on painting a 1950’s style full body portrait of Ditta Von Teese, a popular pin up model.

MEDUSA BAR House Paint // 2014 // 10 x 10 ft. A friend and I were entered into a contest at the Medicine Hat College’s pub, Crave, to paint the back wall of the bar. A requirement of the project was that it relate to the school in a meaningful way. We produced this design in a matter of days and used our own interpretation of Medusa, incorporating black and yellow rattler snakes to represent the College’s school mascot.

PRINT MAKING I discovered a medium that I never thought I could see myself doing, and it is called Intaglio. This medium consists of etching images onto a zinc plate, dipping it in an acid bath to h elpmake the image move deeper into the plate. You can achieve an signifcant amount of detail using a sharp p ointed etching needle to produce small intricate details.

SKULLS & ROSES Zinc Plate // 2014 // 6 x 9 in. This is my third print that I did for Intaglio 1. It was the first time I ever tried anything with skulls. This medium allowed me to produce very intricate detail with a sharp needle rather than trying to sharpen a pencil to get the finest point possible.

SKULLS & ROSES (2) Zinc Plate // 2014 // 6 x 9 in. For this Skulls and Roses print, I wanted to push the detail a little father so I added butterflies with intricate wings. I also added a dark messy background to bring out the o ther elements in the piece. The s hadowing d etails also make the darker details look three dimensional.

MERGE Visual Communication Graduating Class of 2015 developed the title ‘Merge‘ for the Grad Show. It is the idea of b ringing together all of the things we have learned in the program over the past three years for one last time as a classmates, and as life long friends.

MERGE LOGO DESIGN Mixed Media // 2015 // 6.5 x 6.5 in. These are some of the concept logo designs I developed with for the Merge Grad Show. I incorporated my own pieces of art work as the background for the logo to show my own personal touch.

MERGE POSTER DESIGN Digital // 2015 // 18 x 24 in. My involvement was producing print collateral for marketing the Grad Show. I wanted to create posters to advertise the show around Medicine Hat College as well hanging posters up around the city. I wanted to make the posters personalized to each class member that was going to be in the show, and with doing so I had everyone bring a prop of the medium they enjoy working with the most.

BLUE PRINTED Mixed Media // 2015 // 20 x 24 in. This one of my two pieces that will be seen in the Merge Grad Show. I have an interest in Interior Design, so I wanted to create my own interpretation of a blue print using my favorite medium, Intaglio. I designed a modern looking “dream home that I etched into a large sized zinc plate and altered the color from a blue color to a teal color. I used to teal, because it is one of my favorite colors, so I wanted it to represent my interpretation of the blue print.
