For this project, I chose the paper quiling artist, Yulia Brodskaya. I found her work so lovely and intricate, that I wanted to explore paper quilling but also explore using calligraphy to create my own typeface based upon her work. Through this process, I created a couple letters that were made out of paper, and I realized that it was more work than I had originially intended. So, to further my work progress, I ended up creating my own calligraphic-like typeface just using my own handwritting. Next, I scanned my original sketch of my handwritting into Illustrator and started to trace my letters so they were more clean and neat. To end Component One, I photographed my hand made letters of out paper and used that as the background for my poster to help display my typeface.

After doing some research, I started to sketch out to what I though would work as decorative type. I wasn’t too fond of this skech at all, which just meant that I ould keep puching forward to create something better. With that, I thought I needed to dig deeper into what calligraphy’s purpose was.

In Catalyst One, I walked around downtown Medicine Hat to photograph different types of typesfaces and see how they were used. I traced the images I had, then scanned them into Illustrator to make them digital. Once that was done, I created a poster to show off the different faces I had found and make it visually appleaing.

9.12.2014 I started out doing some research on famous calligraphers and how calligraphy came to be. I looked mostly at George Bickham because of his decorative typefaces.

I found a few artists whose work I loooked at quite a bit, but the one who I found the most intresting and who I picked as my artist for this project was Yulia Brodskaya, the paper quilling artist.

I fell in love with Yulia’s work, I’ve never seen anything like before. When I was trying to pick out an artist to reference for my typeface, her work just kept pulling me back in. Her work is so delicate and detailed and it is all completely made out of paper.

Before I started this project, I collected some materials and ideas off of Pinterest to help me come up with a style and an idea of how about doing the combination of paper quilling and calligraphy to create my typeface.

Here I have taken photos of the paper quilling that I had attempted to simulate something close to Yulia’s style of work but using my won handwritting. I even ended up using the same technique as her, such as using pastic straws and glue to actually create my letters. I didn’t do anymore because I realized that it was taking me too much time and so I needed to move into a simpler soultions. These four letters alone took 5.5 hours.

This was my last and final sketch that I did that I finally determined that was going to the style of my typeface. I scanned the image into Illustrator and used my graphic tablet to make the letters digital so they were more clean. I named the typface delicate papers to to help refer to Yulia Brodskaya’s art work, and as well as the fine lines I used in my typeface to make it look delicate.

This is my final poster design for display my 26 character typeface, while also resembling Yulia Brodskaya by the paper quilling I did and then photographed for the background.
