THE CHAIRMAN

It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the 2020 Annual Impact Report for the Haileybury Foundation.

Despite the obvious challenges during the year, we achieved much to be proud of and I encourage you to read on and learn of the impact we have collectively made. As I have mentioned in previous reports and bulletins, your Foundation Board spends its first meeting in February of each year discussing our overall strategy, reviewing the prior year’s achievements compared to our Key Performance Indicators (‘KPIs’), then setting fresh KPIs for the year ahead. In February 2020, we set ourselves some ambitious targets, unaware that it was to be the last physical meeting of the year – with all subsequent ones held via ‘Zoom’, like so many others around the world. While we understandably fell short on a number of these targets, our Development team pivoted their approach and made progress in many areas.

Over the years, we also formulated a plan to reach our longterm financial objectives. For example, were donations to be double their current level, grow by 10 percentage points a year for the next 20 years then steady for the subsequent 20 years, whilst our investment corpus continued with its average annual return rate, both the Foundation scholarships we provide and Haileybury itself would be secured in perpetuity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every 2020 donor for your support and generosity. NEIL SUTCLIFFE CHAIRMAN, HAILEYBURY FOUNDATION

The successes I would like to highlight include:

Our total donation and investment income, our ‘operating cashflow’, and our overall investment corpus ended up slightly higher than the prior year

We proudly supported those Haileybury families that were severely financially affected by the COVID-19 government lockdown, through our General (unrestricted) Fund donating to the School’s COVID-19 Financial Flexibility Program

We found innovative ways to connect with our donor community, with the stand-out being the ‘Donor Impact Series’ which brought benefactors and beneficiaries together in a virtual setting.

Despite the obvious challenges during the year, we achieved much to be proud of

Message from THE VICE PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & ADVANCEMENT The events of last year have provided Haileybury with the chance to adapt and innovate, just as it has done throughout its 129-year history.

The Haileybury Foundation too, was able to use this challenging time to find new ways of doing things as it continues to build on its good work to change lives forever. By their very nature, foundations are innovators. Every foundation was established because it identified a need or a problem to be solved: passionate individuals or a caring group of people who organised, generated ideas, and launched into action. They did so despite what may at first have appeared to be an overwhelming task before them. 11 years ago, a very similar group of passionate Haileyburians did much the same when they initiated the Haileybury Foundation.

This year, the Haileybury Foundation will continue to build on what worked so well last year. Innovation can be a tool for overcoming resources, obstacles and mindsets to develop new approaches that deliver best value and extraordinary results. At its core, innovation is about the ability to adapt and change, to solve problems, and to find new and better ways of doing things to meet needs. We hope you too will walk with us to continue Changing Lives Forever. SCOTT DORAN VICE PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & ADVANCEMENT

Fortunately, through last year’s challenges, the Haileybury Foundation discovered new ways of doing things. Staff and benefactors switched to working from home rather than from the office, they held meetings online rather than faceto-face and event venues were swapped for virtual ones to host occasions and nurture relationships.

We hope you too will walk with us to continue Changing Lives Forever.

THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI RELATIONS

Despite the difficulties faced by many in our community in 2020, Haileybury Foundation ended our 10th year in a very healthy position, thanks to the continued generosity from members of our community. I have been incredibly proud of the work of my team during this challenging year in communicating with so many in our community. Some of the highlights of the year include:

• 180+ phone calls made to alumni over the age of 65 • Significant financial assistance provided from Haileybury Foundation to Haileybury families affected by COVID-19

• Care packages and follow-up calls made to Winged Heart Society members

• Four Donor Impact events delivered online featuring senior staff members from Haileybury and Foundation Scholarship students

• The inaugural Winged Heart Society luncheon – a wine and cheese event delivered online.

The challenges of 2020 aside, we are delighted to report that in 2021 Haileybury Foundation is providing a total of 14 scholarships. The 14 recipients will either commence or continue their education at Haileybury in 2021 when they would otherwise not have had this opportunity. We are incredibly thankful to our wonderful donors, who have contributed so generously to the following scholarships commencing or continuing this year:

OF YOUR GIVING FAITH MAPOLO KAUSENI

HANNAH CHARD Hannah commenced at Haileybury City in Year 7 at the beginning of the 2020 School year. Hannah, the beneficiary of the Class of 1988 Scholarship, was recently announced as the City Girls Middle School Social Justice Captain for 2021. Along with being named a leader for 2021, Hannah has had many highlights in her first year, “My first day at Haileybury, Camp Jungai on the Goulburn River and Speech Day” to name a few. Exams were daunting at first; however, Hannah performed well academically and was honoured to receive a Distinction for Academics. Hannah immersed herself in a variety of extra-curricular activities throughout the year including Debating, where she received her first Haileybury colour. She also completed the Level 3 Compass Award, whereby she was required to complete physical activities (strength and conditioning classes), a hobby (sewing face masks), exploration (Year 7 camp) and volunteering (providing meals to the community). Hannah sends this message to her benefactors:

“Thank you all for giving me the privilege of attending Haileybury this year. Your generosity and kindness have provided many special opportunities. I have enjoyed learning at Haileybury so much this year. The extraordinary education has inspired me to press forward and achieve beyond my imagination”. Congratulations on a wonderful year, Hannah!

With the introduction of the Haileybury Workplace Giving program in 2019, Faith Mapolo Kauseni, who is originally from Zambia, was given the incredible opportunity to join Haileybury City as a Year 7 student at the commencement of 2020. Faith has not looked back. Despite a year of uncertainty, she has shown great resilience and in 2021 started a new leadership position as City Middle School Girls Sport Captain. Faith’s year, like that of many, was turned on its head with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, she showed true resilience to stay focused, motivated and well connected to her Haileybury community. Faith was able to build on her growth mindset through assembly sessions with Head of Campus, Caroline Merrick; build her endurance with online Pilates sessions with her PE teacher, Sophie Elliott; and engage in ‘Out Loud Poetry’ in a team’s format against schools from all over the state. Faith also loved catching up with former Haileybury student and current Western Bulldogs player, Cody Weightman (OH2020) during the year to discuss their shared love of AFL. Faith sums up her amazing experience with a note to her benefactors:

“I would like to thank all the benefactors for this opportunity. Being at Haileybury City campus has been an amazing experience this year. Opportunities like these do not come often; I am so grateful for every moment and second I spend at City campus. I have cherished each moment I have had on campus or online. Your generosity has impacted my educational life on a mental, physical and emotional perspective. I would not be in school during this pandemic if I were back in Africa. It is amazing how generosity can impact and completely turn an orphan’s life around. I love being part of the Haileyburian community and I look forward to the years to come. I will forever be grateful for this chance. Thank you”. Congratulations Faith. We know that you will continue to go from strength to strength.

DONOR

Spotlight ROGER HOLDING Roger Holding (OH’66) has long been a highly engaged member of the Haileybury community.

Roger, a retired Chartered Accountant has moved back to Melbourne after spending much of his working life in Geelong. He and his wife, Debra, a former President of the Old Geelong Collegians Association met at a combined alumni dinner many years ago and haven’t looked back. Roger is a former President of the Old Haileyburians Association and for many years served as Haileybury’s representative on the APS Past Students Golf Committee. Roger maintains his connections because of the wonderful advancements that he has seen the School deliver over the past 20 years “watching a school expand its culture

and be at the forefront of providing an unequalled educational experience”. He remains impressed by the development of the City campus and Haileybury’s unique work in Beijing. Roger is a member of the 1892 Circle as well as the Winged Heart Society. While contributing an annual gift to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund (1892 Scholarship), Roger has also decided to leave a bequest to the Haileybury Foundation in order to “help those who have the ability

but not the opportunity”. Roger wishes to see young people achieve their potential and enjoy the incredible experiences that a Haileybury education offers. There is no doubt that those who contribute, like Roger, are seeing the true value of their gift through the inspiring stories and smiling faces in this publication.

DR DOUGLAS TRAVIS Dr Douglas Travis (OH’74), a semiretired urologist, has carved an impressive clinical career combining business, management, delivery of outstanding medical services and corporate advisory, holding roles such as Director of Surgery for one of Melbourne’s largest public hospitals, running his own private practice, and holding the position of Victorian President of the Australian Medical Association (AMA). Dr Travis is proudly supporting two students who are the beneficiaries of the Dr Douglas Travis Scholarships. The inaugural recipient was Berwick Year 10 student, Vinith Imayavasan and more recently Newlands Year 7 student, Bhanu Mahendran. On both occasions, Dr Travis spent a considerable amount of time with Haileybury Foundation staff interviewing potential candidates for the scholarships on offer. Dr Travis hopes that by offering these opportunities, students will be able to find their tomorrow with a life-changing Haileybury education. He believes

“it is attitude, mixed with aptitude that will determine your altitude”. Dr Travis explains the rationale behind his significant commitment to the Foundation:

“I have seen many a patient who could have carved out a brilliant career, but the inability to afford an education at a leading private school denied them the opportunity to nurture and grow their brilliance into something that could transform the ordinary into greatness”. We are incredibly grateful for the contribution that Dr Travis makes, and we have no doubt that he is making a significant difference to not only those students he is supporting, but also to Haileybury and society as a whole.

Meet our new Scholarship Recipients for 2021

Thursday, 28 January, was an incredibly exciting day for four new students who commenced their journeys at Haileybury. Each one of these students was awarded a Haileybury Foundation Scholarship after a rigorous selection process conducted by individual donors and members of the Haileybury Foundation Board. As we fondly farewelled three of our Foundation Scholarship students from the Class of 2020, we are excited that these new students have joined our school. We are sure you will join with us in wishing them well on their Haileybury journey.

She hopes one day to fulfil her dream of becoming a health professional, be it as a physiotherapist, surgeon or paramedic. Brita loves the outdoors and spending time with her family. She is a keen bike rider and enjoys camping and bushwalking. She is also a proficient sportswoman, taking part in recreational dancing, netball, swimming and basketball. This was put on hold for a period during 2020 when Brita was recovering from a spinal fusion after spending the summer holidays in a wheelchair. She is back on her feet now and has the world as her oyster. Minna Heiskari, Brita’s mother reports that

“As a mother, I love seeing my daughter happy and we are thinking every day how lucky Brita is to be educated in such a great learning environment. I personally love the professional communication between the School and parents as well as the warm welcome that the School has endorsed”. We are incredibly thankful for the HPFK and in particular, their President, Lenice Norris for this wonderful gift.

of the HPFC Scholarship generously gifted by the Parents and Friends of Castlefield. Lachie commenced with us in Year 7 this year. He has Haileybury bloodlines with his grandfather, Robin Cavalier, having attended Haileybury in the 1960s. Lachie was House Captain of his previous school in Grade 6 and performed well academically, particularly in Spelling and Maths. He is an excellent footballer and enjoys playing all sports as much as he can. Lachie loves animals and has recently adopted a rescue dog. Every so often he will visit the rescue shelter and take the dogs who are awaiting their forever home for a walk. Lachie’s mother, Sarah is adamant that the Haileybury Foundation has provided Lachie with a life-changing experience, an empowering opportunity through this scholarship.

“He’s absolutely loving it and he is still pinching himself about the opportunity the Foundation has bestowed on him. The communication from the School is simply incredible too.”

MANAL AHMAD YEAR 9, CITY

BHANU MAHENDRAN

CLASS OF 1984 SCHOLARSHIP

YEAR 7, KEYSBOROUGH

Manal commenced at Haileybury City at the beginning of Term 1A in November 2020. Manal is the grateful recipient of the Class of 1984 Scholarship, the third of Haileybury Foundation’s Class Giving Scholarships. The Class of 1984 Scholarship has been generously donated by a number of former students from that peer group. Members of the class, Scott Grenda and Neil McKinnon were heavily involved in the interviewing process. Manal is a wonderful young lady who would not previously have dreamed of attending Haileybury. She is keen to pursue a career in Science, in particular gynaecology, nursing or psychology. Manal is a keen dancer and has also competed at State level in taekwondo (Poomsae). She has taken the plunge this year and joined the diving team, despite never having tried the sport before. Her other hobbies include singing, reading and baking. Manal has shown a keen interest in social justice initiatives, most particularly assisting in fundraisers to support children with disabilities.

DOUGLAS TRAVIS SCHOLARSHIP #2 Bhanu joins Haileybury Newlands as the second beneficiary of the Dr Douglas Travis Scholarship. Dr Travis has been incredibly supportive of the Haileybury Foundation and we are delighted that Bhanu has been granted this opportunity. Bhanu has aspirations of becoming a doctor. She has previously performed very well in Maths, English and Science at her former school, along with being Class Captain, a member of the SRC and netball captain. Bhanu is a talented athlete, recently achieving some excellent results in the State Athletic Championships. She is also an avid reader with The Hunger Games and Harry Potter being two of her favourite books. Bhanu’s mother, Nanthini commented that

“She is very happy. She loves her subjects, especially learning Science, French and Maths”. Through the support of our donors, each of these children will have their lives changed forever. Thank you.

Manal’s mother, Rakhshanda has been delighted with our School. She reports that Manal

“Loves all her teachers. Everyone is so supportive. She feels she has always been a part of Haileybury. She really likes small class numbers as it helped her feel more confident in forming a respectful relationship with her peers and teachers and she feels it makes them more approachable”. We are incredibly grateful to the Class of 1984 for providing this opportunity.

Through the support of our donors, each of these students will have their lives changed forever. Thank you.

You are making a difference...

Looking forward

2021

As we plan ahead for a successful year in 2021, we asked some of our Haileybury Foundation staff members and supporters what excites them about the year ahead…

Providing even more opportunities for our community to unite and lead in ‘changing lives forever’.

Through the generous donations from our community, I feel privileged to able to see the life changing and positive impacts of a world class Haileybury education given to our deserving scholarship recipients.

SCOTT DORAN VICE PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & ADVANCEMENT

REBECCA ARCERI CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Sharing the amazing and impactful stories of our scholarship students with members of our community to show that you are making a huge difference. RUSSELL DAVIDSON DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT & ALUMNI RELATIONS

I am motivated to ensure that every student matters every day, no matter their background. I care deeply about education and how much this impacts a person’s life. When you have the chance to positively impact and change someone’s life, particularly the trajectory at such a young age, it’s powerful. ANNA SEVER DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (TEACHING & LEARNING)

Helping to extend the enriching opportunities of a Haileybury education to an even wider range of deserving young Australians with more Haileybury Foundation scholarships in 2022. NICOLE STEYN DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Haileybury is such a brilliant school I am thrilled to support the Work Place Giving Program which provides opportunities for deserving young people to access a Haileybury education and a life-long connection with the School community. JANE GIBBS HEAD OF CAMPUS (NEWLANDS)
