Main School production Shakespeare’s Richard III Wednesday
– Saturday
November
Ayckbourn Theatre
7. pm
Richard III follows the ruthless rise to power of Richard, Duke of Gloucester. After the death of King Edward IV, Richard schemes and murders his way to the throne, eliminating his brothers, nephews, and others. His manipulations include marrying and then killing Lady Anne. As King, Richard faces rebellion led by Henry Tudor. The climactic Battle of Bosworth Field results in Richard’s death, ending his tyrannical reign. Henry Tudor becomes King Henry VII, establishing the Tudor dynasty and restoring peace to England.
The play explores themes of power, betrayal, and the consequences of unchecked ambition.
The play highlights the role of propaganda in shaping historical narratives. The vilification of Richard by Tudor historians has been questioned by modern scholars, reminding us to be critical of biased accounts that serve political agendas. In a year of elections and an era of fake news, Richard’s ruthless desire to rule at all costs draws strong political parallels.
