2023/2024 – what a year that was!
As you see in this yearbook the School enjoyed an exciting twelve months, which culminated in Haileybury being named Boarding School of the Year by Tes. Behind that accolade was a huge amount of endeavour and achievement, there is also the strongest commitment to service. This was manifested in the flourishing Hearts & Wings and Haileybury Youth Trust programmes.
This yearbook gives you a snapshot of the breadth of Haileybury life, of our ambition, our commitment to excellence and our determination to provide a first class all round education for each and every one of our pupils.
I hope that you enjoy reading this yearbook and, in so doing, you get a good sense for who we are.

Newton apple tree gives gravitas to SciTech hub
Haileybury was honoured to accept a sapling propagated from the apple tree that inspired Sir Isaac Newton’s law of gravitation. Named one of ten recipients by The National Trust and Blue Diamond Garden Centres, our school proudly accepted a young tree spawned from that which led to one of the world’s most significant scientific discoveries. The ten saplings were propagated from the 400-year-old Flower of Kent apple tree that remains a protected feature of Woolsthorpe Manor in Lincolnshire, the birthplace and family dwelling of the English polymath.
The precious sapling will remain under the care of Haileybury’s arborists until it can be planted in the SciTech building courtyard. It will become a focal point and inspiration for generations of pupils to come.

Haileybury has always been an early adopter of educational technology. When Artificial Intelligence (AI) gained marked momentum in 2023, our school knew we needed to devise a strategy for how we would teach responsible use and prepare pupils for their future workplaces.
Haileybury took a bold step in promoting the safe and considered use of AI when other educational institutions were banning it.
Embracing in teaching and learning
The guiding philosophy for teaching and learning at Haileybury has always been ‘process vs product’, meaning that we thoughtfully harness AI to support the learning process but not the final product. Rather than demonising AI and labelling it as ‘cheating’, Haileybury is embracing its
transformative potential. The dedicated Digital Srategy Committee are driving positive and safe use of emerging tools, focusing on ChatGPT, Perplexity, PI and Canva. An holistic approach is taken by reimagining lessons and refining the curriculum to prepare pupils for AI in the
future workplace. The importance of parental involvement was also considered with the introduction of parent webinars to discuss this subject.

HAILEYWOOD!
It is our ultimate goal that by making operational and pupil-led changes, our school can achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2043. Over the last 18 months, Haileybury has put in place a comprehensive sustainability strategy. At the heart of this strategy is the Sustainability Committee, led by the pupils and focused on becoming a truly Green School, anchored on the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Each goal is linked to an area of activity within the School. The strategy, designed by the pupils, is based on the following principles:
Ensuring academic excellence for teaching, research and innovation within a sustainably aware curriculum.
Reducing carbon emissions to net zero and improving energy self-sufficiency.
Protecting and enhancing the biodiversity, ecology and grounds.
Promoting a sustainable culture and practice across the whole school community, in all areas of school life, focusing on a positive social impact and service.
Ensuring partnerships, investments, procurement and development are sustainably aligned.
Haileybury has joined the Drinkable Rivers programme and has established its own hub. Our school is committed to actively contributing to the monitoring and preservation of our local river’s health, the River Lea, in alignment with the global effort to achieve drinkable rivers. This project brings together volunteering, STEM and sustainability.
The Drinkable Rivers Citizen Science programme is a pioneering initiative that empowers individuals to actively monitor the health of their local rivers. By engaging in this programme, our pupils will play a vital role in tracking the progress towards the ultimate goal of achieving drinkable rivers worldwide.
In 2024, Haileybury was awarded the Green Flag distinction by Eco-Schools.

NEW STEM AWARD
In the Muddy Stilettos’ Best Schools Awards 2024 Haileybury was Highly Commended for Excellence in STEM.
Another exciting SciTech development this year saw the launch of Vex Robotics, a club that enables pupils to learn to design, build, program, and compete with their own robots. Vex Robotics allows the pupils to explore the cutting edge development of autonomous function within robotics and programming. Incorporating elements of further maths, physics, computer science and design and technology, pupils are immersed in the fascinating world of robotics.
The Haileybury Vex team, composed of Lower School boys and girls, underwent an interview process to secure one of the ten available spots. The initial two teams, named Acumen and Haros, embarked on a journey of learning and experience, utilising existing robot designs, meticulously organising robot parts, and have already competed with other schools at regional and national levels. Following the success and popularity of the club, two new Lower School 1 teams were created, Power Surge and Lumina.

Haileybury Model United Nations (MUN) is the largest in the UK and has gained an excellent reputation, both nationally and internationally. Simulating the real United Nations, pupils act as delegates from particular countries, and represent those countries’ views in various committees. Their aim is to construct and pass resolutions which deal with assorted problems faced by the world. Participation in MUN is an excellent way for pupils to develop their debating skills, awareness of international affairs, and confidence. The activity is also primarily pupil-led, providing excellent opportunities for Sixth Formers, in particular, to develop their leadership skills.
