Feedback from Ben Parry, our adjudicator, and results
We think that Haileybury provides a home and a stage for all musical talent and expression; tonight, we hope, proves us correct. Please silence your phones for the duration of the performance and refrain from taking any photos or recordings throughout.
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this year ’ s Young Musician of the Year Final This eagerly anticipated feature in the musical calendar provides an opportunity for our pupils to showcase their very best performances, while providing the audience with an exceptional evening of music All of our performers tonight were either winners or runners up in the preliminary round heats of the Grade 7+ categories which were staged last week. But now the scores are even, and tonight we look forward to an exciting programme of performances as we are taken on a musical journey from the Baroque to Broadway.
As an additional treat this evening, we shall also hear a performance of the first movement from Sibelius’ Violin Concerto by last year ’ s Musician of the Year winner, Joe Stoller
I am delighted to welcome our guest adjudicator, Ben Parry. With a busy career as a conductor, composer, arranger, singer and producer, Ben has made over 300 recordings, while his many compositions are published by Oxford University Press, Stainer & Bell, Peters Edition (Wise Music) and Faber. In 2023, Ben stepped down as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain after nearly 11 years, and he is currently Director of the professional choir, London Voices. Ben was formerly a course director for the Rodolfus Choral Courses for 20 years, Director of Music at St Paul’s School and the Junior Royal Academy of Music in London and Assistant Director of Music of King's College, Cambridge from 2013 to 2021. Whilst living in Scotland, Ben cofounded the distinguished Dunedin Consort, and was also Director of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus and Director of Choral Music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Ben has conducted many of the country’s leading orchestras, as well as orchestras for the soundtracks of major films such as The Hobbit, Avengers and Harry Potter. In 2024, Ben was made an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music for his services to the music industry.
As always, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues for all the hard work they have put into preparing the pupils for their performances Their many hours of careful tuition and guidance are truly appreciated by the pupils Thank you also to the Operations staff for their support in staging this evening’s concert. Special thanks also to Mr Ali for accompanying the pupil performances.
We hope you have a wonderful evening.
