The Humber Star

[Respective bar numbers shown in brackets] [1] Staghound, Shoaymyo, Sportsman, John Sims, Excel, Mizpah, Gertrude and Ethel, Romantic, City of Birmingham, Londesborough, Valkyrie… Homeward bound, north easterly by east, thrown on her beam ends, struck by heavy sea… three boats in Lewis, twenty men from Back, nine married, thirty children, lost in the boil… A steamer, Brook, ashore on Spittal Beach Besper, a sloop, stranded at Spurn St. Margaret at Ballina Helene Mar at Adrogena A schooner called Doctor, three crew dead Cort Adelear, adrift in outer Buckie Danby and Olive ashore on Maplin Sand The barque Noel, from Belfast to Barbados A brigantine, Crescent, holding pit wood for the fells Ida, set for Peel, broke her mooring in the harbour Trawler Bruce aground, shattered keel at Salton Bay. All crew drowned. [3] The night before you left I scrubbed your back in the copper bath. Your skin was candlelit and I lathered glycerine soap over your shoulders, still smarting from the week before. Your left side was tender from hauling the gear, bruises brindled your skin. The steam plumed and water thickened with your sediment. I fed you the last of our tinned beef and stout. We didn’t speak of the next day; I knew you’d leave in the night. Without a goodbye, without a sound, your oilskins shone in the dawn’s first light. [13] October, it was that month. I clearly recall the russet leaves and you walking towards me in the westerly wind of Hessle Road. Your cap to one side, whistling a song with your teeth closed just to catch my attention. Your cerulean eyes, I almost fell into them but quickly looked at my feet, head down, pulled the shawl over my head. But you saw me. My cheeks burning with embarrassment, hair in rat’s tails from scrubbing the parlour floor, pinny smeared with linseed oil. When you smiled I could barely breathe. Father said never marry a sailor, don’t be his bride. It will only bring trouble. And perhaps he was right. [36] I never forgot that first violent kiss, my lip bled as you grappled me. You tore my petticoat, held me against the tenfoot wall. Said I howled like a wintertime vixen, but that didn’t stop you. I was Aspinall then, just a girl. Helpless for your attention. You put your grandmother’s ring on my finger, promised a dress from your settlings. I’ll pay for the do, you said. Horse and cart, invite the family, you’ll be called Mudd. Three winters passed and I waited for you, paid for the lace gown myself.

[48] Your first week at sea anxiety woke me. Second week it started to drag. I boxed and brushed out the smokehouse, almost forgot about you. Braided nets on the front step. Bottomed the house again. Then I looked forward to your return. Wore my Sunday bests that day. Took the pram down to fish dock, followed the stench in the air. When you walked through the door our boys ran at you, furiously, with love. You always threw them over your shoulder, picked me up, pulled down my hair. The joy never lasted long. After three days of drinking you were almost done. [62] Look at my hands, salt-burned from herring. Callous and dry. Red raw from worry. Hands that scaled a thousand cod, made a skyline’s stretch of nets. Gutted fish in the sleety mess. Grinlaw taught me to weave, her mouth tough as a boot. Hook and thread, count it in. Earn for yourself, she said. Keep the money when he’s at sea. Don’t whistle and stitch, it’ll only bring a storm in. Sold my nets to a trawler. The weave so tight it pulled a man from the deep. They identified him from his gansey. Sailors said it was midnight, their lantern picked up the knit. Released his body back to sea, fed him to the Gods which took him… [95] On my chest a Humber Star. Ten balls of wool, woad-dye, worsted spun. Fresh from combs at Bowling Mill. I cannot read or write, but patterns live inside my head, windproof, water-tight, snug to the neck. It was hidden beneath the stairs. Your Christmas gift, wrapped in brown paper. Knitted each night you were gone. A year’s worth of stitches, each one for you, my nets and gansey wherever you land. [106] Weeping women lean on the gates, by candles, flowers, a crucifix stand. I watched them huddled, coats frosted white. Snow settled on their brows. The papers printed your name last week – M. Mudd, Londesborough, all hands lost. Thirteen boats, but yours will return. I still have some kind of hope. Now I sit in this carriage, wrapped in a tartan shrug, listening to the rage of a savage wind that rattles its way into every hole. Spurn Head’s only a few miles now. You came to me in my sleep. Told me to walk past Kilnsea, find your boat on a cobblestone beach. [121] You said it was the last tree in Holderness. Planted by the Weslyan Chapel, a hawthorn. Its gnarled branches blown asunder. Limbs and knuckles and crooked feet. We came here last summer, remember? Sheltered beneath its

twisted reach, and you said you’d never leave, cupped a lime-hawk moth between your hands, chipped and beaten from the last fishing trip. Petals of golden-horned poppies were softer than butterfly wings, the sun caught my shoulders, you covered me up and we walked to the groynes jutting out in the sea. [133] The light has barely risen this week. Gravel sloops rest on Trinity Sand, London’s highways paved by this sea. Here there is only weather and water, driftwood, marram grass, furze-heath. I walk in the estuary’s debris, on sea coal, whelks, pale urchin shells, crunch the rotting claws of gull-savaged crabs. White fret hangs on this naked shore, almost suffocating me. [143] Light, light, light. I count Smeaton’s lamp as it shines in the gloaming. The bulb which will guide you home. Spume and spray cover my coat, and timber litters the path. Coughed up from the Ouse and Calder, this sand its final resting place. Like the charnel house at mudflats, where I checked for your name on a list of the dead; unclaimed, still sheeted from the last desperate wreck.

[171] How I wait for the spring-sun. To see your face again. I’ve searched here for you, almost two whole nights. My fingernails chewed to the bone. A seagull calls from a trawler, nets laden with phosphorous fish, it dips and weaves in the chimney’s smoke. Heads to the beach, straight towards me. It circles above, drops in the current, over the waves and floats in the wind. I paddle in water, it calls out to me, as if the bird is trying to speak. Here, by the tide, I stretch on the sand. It lands at my feet, puts feathers in my hands. The surges roll and break. The bird my only comfort. Perhaps this is you after all. The soul of a sailor in every gull. It makes a sorrowful sound, I whisper a bethel hymn to you. Breathe in the air that tastes of salt. Love, love, love will see us through. Adelle Stripe, 2017
