Specialist’s Insights ‘There’s never a dull moment’... ‘You learn something new every day’… ‘Who knows what’s around the corner’… All clichés certainly but all clichés that lend themselves perfectly to the job of an auction house valuer. Whether it be an object of silver brought to our office on a valuation day, an exquisite piece of jewellery seen on a house visit or a ‘timeless’ watch discovered in an estate, each day brings with it something new. I was lucky enough, only a few weeks ago, to encounter an initially unassuming silver tea caddy. On further inspection and with research undertaken by myself and the vendors, it turned out to be a rare early 18th century Dutch example worth in the region of £3000 - £5000. Quite a figure when you compare it to the usual few hundred achieved for most caddies offered for auction. A full catalogue description and illustration

can be seen on page 32 (lot 156). Over the past eight years that I’ve worked at Halls, I’ve had the opportunity to catalogue some truly unique items of silver ranging from a provincial Chester porringer which realised £6000 to a Liberty & Co silver, enamel and shagreen tobacco box which sold for £10,500. As well as a silver enthusiast, I am also an avid lover of jewellery and there’s never a specialist auction where I do not covet at least one piece that’s offered. I personally like to collect pieces dating from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. Of course, everyone’s tastes are different, which is why auctions are the perfect environment for all buyers, whether avid collectors or individuals sourcing that one special purchase. Particular favourites of mine in this auction are lot 196, a diamond set coronet brooch and lot 222, a pair of almandine garnet ear pendants. If you prefer something a little more modern perhaps lot 243, an Andrew Grime 18ct gold diamond set ring, will entice you to bid. Following the diverse collection of jewellery we have all types of pocket

and wristwatches to tempt every budget and need. If it’s top brands you’re after look no further than lots 267 and 274, for his and her’s Rolex, or for a more affordable choice a private collection of modern wristwatches can be found between lots 276 and 279. Where wristwatches have always historically been in demand, pocket watches are making a comeback. Once thought ‘old-fashioned’, popular cult television programmes such as Peaky Blinders and Sherlock Holmes are bringing them to the attention of the 21st century fashionista and if it’s pocket watches you’re after this sale does not disappoint with lots 296 to 311 dedicated this timepiece. As I reflect on my job as an auctioneer and valuer I feel very lucky to work in such a fascinating and extraordinary field. The thrill and buzz of an auction house on sale day is like no other. Frenzied bidding and last minute commissions means there really isn’t a dull moment on auction day. The cataloguing of items and researching their provenance means we really are always learning. And as for what’s around the corner... well who knows...

Specialist’s Insights When researching artists it often strikes me how some, despite prodigious talent, fail to develop a following beyond their lifetime and their work remains largely unknown outside their own friends, collectors and curatorial circles. There are of course many reasons why this may happen but few are quite as talented as Robert Bateman (1842-1922) an example of whose work is lot 359 in this catalogue. Born into a creative family at Biddulph Hall in Staffordshire, he became an accomplished architect, naturalist and artist.

56

A man of private means he trained at the Royal Academy before becoming a consistent follower of the work of Edward Burne-Jones. Bateman further embellished this medieval strain of the Pre-Raphaelite tradition with an acutely poetic and mystical style. He was not under financial pressure to perform as an artist and as such his output was small. Other than a couple of paintings in public collections his work is rarely seen and only occasionally comes onto the open market. Bateman’s inscription on the bottom left of the still life addresses the work to a Mrs Brinkman at Ribbesford Hall, Bewdley. Undoubtedly painted for someone of a similar social standing the painting has an element of mystery as well as exquisite colour and extreme detail, as befitting the Pre-Raphaelite period. It is a rare painting by an important albeit overlooked artist from a seminal artistic period.

317 317 ANDRIES VAN EERTVELT (ANTWERP, 1590-1652) SHIPWRECK ON THE ROCKS

signed lower left, oil on canvas 39 x 53cm Notes: A superb maritime piece by the earliest prominent Flemish artist, depicting a ship struggling in the face of nature, one of his favoured subjects. Although there is no certain date, it is likely that this painting stems from the period before he travelled to Genoa in 1628, as after his return his style became softer and more subdued, and violent paintings such as this became less frequent. Provenance: Consigned by a private collector £2500 - £3500

323 ATTRIBUTED TO SAWREY GILPIN (1733-1807) AND GEORGE BARRETT SENIOR (1728 OR 32-1784), FOX IN A WOODLAND CLEARING

note written (part indistinctly) in ink verso ‘one of series of in Gilpin and Barrett ‘’the lake Artists nee 1770’’ They were ... in the sporting magazine’ oil on canvas 83 x 115cm £3000 - £5000

323 Sporting art in the 18th century is arguably the first true English school of painting. Prior to 1660 (the restoration of Charles II) and for some time into the 18th century painting in England was largely the preserve of foreign artists (Kneller, Lely, van Dyck etc). The Dutch tradition of painting the outdoors was copied by the English but with the focus on hunting, racing and other sporting activities. Sawrey Gilpin’s greatest contribution to this genre was to introduce new levels of realism in both anatomy and colour. This painting of a fox has those qualities and Gilpin collaborates with George Barrett to produce a very English sporting painting. This extends to the woodland clearing around the fox which portrays that ‘damp fertility’ so indicative of the English countryside.

396 396 BRITISH SCHOOL, 19TH CENTURY, ‘THE ISABELLA BLYTH’ oil on canvas 72 x 113cm

£1000 - £2000

This painting was probably painted by a south east artist circa 1870. The Isabella Blyth was converted to a barque around 1870. The composition shows a second ship to the right which is in fact a second view of the Isabella Blyth as was common practice in maritime scenes during that period and tells a story of the development of the ship. The coastline in the distance may well be Gravesend.

456 BRITISH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1945

oil on canvas 122 x 214cm

£600 - £800

456

This substantial painting appears to depict incidents from the North African campaign in the Second World War. The panel top centre is almost certainly an Allied (British Eighth Army and US Army) parade into either Algiers in November 1942 or Tripoli in February 1943 as the Vichy French and Germans were pushed out of North Africa. The artist remains unidentified but on balance almost certainly British. There are both US and British soldiers depicted and the British army had a long traditional of embedding war artists into military campaigns from the start of the Great War. This painting acts as a montage of events, from hospital interiors to courtrooms, perhaps witnessed by the artist while in the theatre of war. It also retains a Mediterranean feel in both palate and the portrayal of light.

Specialist’s Insights

116

I have been interested in coins and an avid collector since my school days. I remember starting with British pocket change, progressing to ancient Roman coins and eventually graduating to a host of periods and world examples, so I suppose it was a natural progression to become a specialist in the field in my adult life.

On the other side of the coin, so to speak, I often get brought mixed lots housed within old biscuit tins and plastic boxes which have been sat in a garage or attic for years, untouched and unloved. It is always exciting to delve into these and discover what’s within! Most vendors are pleasantly surprised by the value of these finds which up until a week before they knew nothing about!

The coin department here at Halls has grown immensely since I established it in 2005. To begin with it featured mainly coin stalwarts such as sovereign and Krugerrands s but gradually, as its reputation grew, large collections and rare individual coins began to become a frequent occurrences. Today our tri-annual coin auctions, always held in the good company of silver, jewellery and pictures has become an integral part of the fine art calendar.

Following the coins we have a collection of commemorative medallions. In my opinion these have been, and still are, under-appreciated and I believe they may be one to watch in the future for any budding enthusiast interested in staring up a collection. While gold examples, such as lot 537; a cased Churchill and Eisenhower four piece set, will always achieve as high price (estimate £5000-7000), interesting silver medallions can be picked up for less than £100.

As a valuer and cataloguer it is a great privilege when an owner, or descendant of a past collector, entrusts you to handle the sale of their items. Coins which were carefully accumulated over years by someone passionate about this subject deserve to be valued and catalogued with the same merit.

I hope anyone reading this has been inspired to either hunt within the crevices of their houses and garages for hidden treasure or perhaps start up their own collection, either way, if you require any impartial advice on your coins or medallions I would be thrilled to help.

Within this auction we have numerous individual coins as well as cased sets. So whether buying for a collection or as a potential investment there is something for everyone. There are gold, silver and bronze coins dating from ancient Roman and Greek, through the Middle Ages to modern coronation sets. Ranging in value from £80 up to £3000 all budgets are welcome!

Studio of John Constable In our opinion a work by an unknown hand in the studio of the artist which may or may not have been executed under the artist’s direction. 4. Circle of John Constable In our opinion a work by an as yet unidentified but distinct hand, closely associated with the named artist but not necessarily his pupil. 5. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO JEWELLERY BUYERS Prospective buyers please note that lots marked with ◉ may be subject to VAT on the hammer price. Prospective buyers should note that although every effort is made to note repairs, restoration and damage in the catalogue descriptions, a lack of any such note should not be taken to imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Prospective watch buyers should note that the working order of watches is not guaranteed. All weights stated in the catalogue are approximate only, these figures are for reference only and prospective buyers should satisfy themselves as to the accuracy. Prospective buyers are reminded that coloured gemstones have historically been treated to enhance their appearance. A variety of methods have been, and are currently used to improve both transparency and colour of various gemstones. All yellow and white metals have not been tested. The International Jewellery Trade generally accept these methods. It is not possible for Halls to obtain gemmological reports on all stones offered for sale and therefore all Halls Holding’s estimates assume that gemstones have been enhanced.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO BOOK BUYERS Prospective buyers should be aware that general wear to include; creasing, light foxing, small tears, bumped corners, worn boards or weak spine/joints, will not be specified in the catalogue descriptions. Any substantial losses/wear to include detached boards, detached spines or extensive graffiti will be described as ‘at fault’. Prospective buyers must satisfy themselves with a condition report prior to bidding, Halls Holdings can take no responsibility for condition of purchased lots if condition reports were not requested.

IMPORTANT NOTICE Although every effort is made to note damage and restoration, the absence of such information does not imply that the lot is free from defects. Detailed condition reports and email images can be obtained on request until 4.00pm the day prior to the sale. 132
