Specialist’s Insights The English pottery and porcelain industry is one which has always been delightfully diverse in nature, and where there is diversity, so too is there a chance for the discerning collector to carve out a niche interest of their own and the private collection of Parian in this auction encapsulates just that notion. Composed over two generations of family and a number of years, the collection demonstrates some of the best of what Victorian ceramic artists and designers could achieve. The origins of Parian can be traced to the biscuit figure modelling tradition throughout Europe in the eighteenth century. The first English factory to produce such was Derby from the 1770s onwards. As Derby’s popularity and manufacturing resources began to decline, ready to fill the gap were a number of forward thinking potteries who were keen to both reproduce the best pieces and use the new bone china material which had recently become available. Potteries represented range from the likes of Copeland and Minton, both exceptional and popular producers, to the lesser known factories such as John Adams & Co. There is no doubt that, once launched on the market, Parian was a great success. Just as they sat adorning the mantels and sideboards of a Victorian collector, equally, their timeless design

means they can easily sit in any modern home and are a beautiful investment for both the decorative factor and talking points. On a personal note, I find one of the most attractive things about Parian to be its place within a cultural subtext and biographical history. Just as it relies on bisque porcelain for its origins, a great number of the figures and groups represent everything from the mythological, to the religious, or the important – creating an essential ‘who’s who’ of Victorian society and history. Busts of famous figures were perhaps the items most widely reproduced throughout all of the potteries, and this auction is no stranger to such pieces. One of our own local heroes, Captain Matthew Webb is even commemorated (lot 102). The first man to swim the English Channel in 1875, and a Shropshire man by birth, his achievements were well recognized throughout England and as such, forever immortalized in the form of a bust. Less common on the market are the larger groups of two or more figures, and perhaps the most dramatic of those within this auction is the Minton group of Cain and Abel (lot 91), designed by Albert Carrieur-Belleuse who was one of a number of French modellers working in the English potteries, and which was shown to great acclaim at the International Exhibition in 1861. One of the most definitive examples of the almost endless scope of artistic design in this period can also be seen in the small collection of Martin Brothers’ pottery (lots 114-119). Almost polarized in nature to the Parian, which remained consistent throughout a long time period, this
particular family of brothers instead took an enthusiastic part in the fast-changing fashions and movements of the era. From early vases and jugs modelled on much earlier medieval forms, to inspiration taken from Japanese Art Pottery, their catalogue was wide, and varied. Items of note in this sale are most certainly the four jars and covers in form of birds, including an exceptional tobacco jar and cover (lot 118). Birds have been a common feature in English pottery, with perhaps the most traditional representation typically being that of an owl. Rather than relying on accepted forms, Robert Wallace instead used his creative imagination to mesh human and animal characteristics as one, the ultimate result being a range of highly anthropomorphic and above all, characterful, birds. Although often referred to as tobacco jars, contemporary sources attest to the aesthetic value of these humorous statuettes having always been more important than any practical aspect. Indeed, owing to their size and design, not even the smallest of hands could use these as functional jars. Although originally designed in the 1870s, demand for such wares never diminished, as is demonstrated by the late date of manufacture of the bird jars in this auction, the earliest of which dates from 1907. This sale offers buyers the chance to snap up their very own piece of Victorian art pottery history, and the estimates are varied enough that there is something to suit all price brackets without any compromise on style or quality. As such, I hope for a successful sale, and look forward to welcoming you to the Halls saleroom.

FOOTNOTE Ariadne was exhibited by Minton at the Society of Arts in 1847 and at the Great Exhibition 1851. Dannecker’s life-size marble (1814) was formerly in the von Bethman Museum in Frankfurt. Other versions are at Stuttgart and the Musee de SaintEtienne. One of the most often reproduced sculptural designs in 19th century Europe, it appears in bronze and other forms. Ariadne, having been abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos, is seen here as the bride of Bacchus - the panther she reclines on is one of his train. Una and the Lion: Made for Summerly’s Art Manufactures and exhibited by Minton at the Great Exhibition in 1851. This group was conceived as a companion to the Ariadne. The full scale statue, also known as ‘Purity’, was included in the Sculpture section of the Great Exhibition 1851. The subject is from Spencer’s ‘Faerie Queenie’. Una, who personifies True Religion, following her separation from the Red Cross Knight, is given protection by a lion, who represents England. “The lion would not leave her desolate, but with her went along, as a strong gard of her caste person.” (“The Faerie Queene”, Book 1, Canto iii.” £200 - £300

FOOTNOTE A similar figure is illustrated in The Parian Phenomenon, A Survey of Victorian Parian Porcelain Statuary & Busts, edited by Paul Atterbury, published by Richard Dennis, fig.568, pg.174, where it is described as one of a set of eight parian figures and ornaments modelled by Hays after Assyrian bas-reliefs in the British Museum. Sennacherib (705-681 BC) is depicted in the robes of the dual office of king and high priest of Ninevah. He carries in his hand the sacred bow of office, the gift of the goddess Ishtar to the kings of Assyria. Austin Hays (1869-1915) was a sculptor born in New York. He studied in Paris under J A Merci. He specialised in genre and historical figures. In Copeland (Robert) Parian, Copeland’s Statuary Porcelain, Antique Collectors Club, a whole chapter is devoted to “The reproductions from the Assyrian Sculptures”. This figure is
illustrated on page 275, fig.17. The bow that Sennacherib carries in his left hand is sacred to his position, having been presented to the Kings of Assyria by Ishtar the Assyro-Babylonian Goddess of both Love and War. She was known as “Mistress of the Bow”, “Archeress of the Gods” and “Lady of War and Battle”. Possession of the bow was believed to ensure victory. Sennacherib eventually met his death by being murdered by two of his sons while at his devotions. Hays derived the body of the figure from a sculptured wall-relief unearthed from Sennacherib’s palace at Ninevah. Sadly, the head had suffered damage, possibly by mutilation, a defect which Hays overcame rather neatly by using a “transplant” of the headdress of Sennacherib’s grandson, Sardanapalus (or Ashurbanipal), as shown in bas-reliefs discovered in his palace, also at Ninevah £120 - £180

Specialist’s Insights When the clock strikes… Clocks are fascinating instruments not only because they demand our attention so that we can tell the time, but also because they can be elaborate works of art in their own right. We are all familiar with the archetypal ‘grandfather clock’ ticktocking away in the hall and reminding us hourly why we must get a damper put on the bell! Less well known are those mantel clocks which do not cover their movements in oak or mahogany but have them revealed for all to see, a transparency of mechanics which can be mesmerising to watch in motion. These clocks without cases, skeleton clocks as they are generally known, were wildly popular in the middle decades of the nineteenth century, not least perhaps because, with their chain driven fusee movements, they were very accurate time keepers. The Victorians delighted in making architectural frames, sometimes based on English cathedrals and it must be surmised that the resulting clocks were something of a conversation piece. The best examples are often large and elaborate with a ‘themed’ frame, such as the York Minster example in this auction and by good Birmingham or London clockmakers, both centres of production where metalworking was second nature.
52
In this auction we are favoured with the clock collection from the estate of a Cheshire dealer, restorer and collector. All the skeleton clocks in this auction are from this estate as are the mahogany cased regulators and the majority of the longcase and drop dial wall clocks. Such is the size of this collection that it has been spread over several sales and includes pocket watches, mantel clocks, longcase clocks, watch and clock movements, cases, dials and watchmakers’ tools. We have literally been spending our time measuring ‘time’ in all its forms from tall regulators to tiny fob watches! The clocks in this auction also include, from another private vendor, a fascinating George III gilt brass table clock constructed for the eastern market in about 1780. Although the movement has been replaced in line with an inscription on the backplate dated 1840, the movement was in fact made for the case, albeit forty to fifty years later after the original had been removed. It is nevertheless a very smart clock and should generate considerable interest. The Chinese market is still strong and this type of clock is very saleable in China-not surprising since it was originally made for this market! Make time therefore to come to the auction on 23rd May to see this comprehensive collection of timekeepers and maybe go home with one or two. Once the bidding starts however, there will be no time for ‘clockwatching’.
