Specialist’s Insights Jensen and enduring design Georg Jensen - a name synonymous with 20th Century jewellery and silver design. It’s always a treat to offer a product of Jensen for auction, whether it be tableware or personal adornment and this sale doesn’t disappoint with not one but nine examples of the brand’s timeless jewellery. The pieces range in both price and period. Estimates begin at £100 and graduate to £700, perhaps reflecting the company’s versatility in providing both affordable and high end works of art. The earliest example is a plaque brooch modelled as two birds dated 1954 through to a bracelet hallmarked 1994. But what is it that makes the Jensen brand so enduring? The story begins in Copenhagen in 1880,
4
when Georg, at the young age of 14 began training as a Goldsmith. Despite this initial interest in metalwork Jensen chose instead to train in sculpture, eventually becoming a potter. It wasn’t until 1901, at the age of 35, Jensen decided to return to his roots and began as a silversmith and designer under master Mogens Ballin. In 1904 he started his own business in the same city and within twenty years had expanded to Berlin, London and New York. His style is instantly recognisable, combining the typical feminine Art Nouveau aesthetic with stronger forms and structural shapes. Georg died in 1935 but the ‘House of Jensen’ has been able to sustain its
popularity over the decades through its various designers, who share/have shared in the vision of its founder. Lot 227, a silver brooch and earrings suite, of abstract form was the conception of Henning Koppel. Koppel was known to push the boundaries of what was expected from the brand and also what was physically possible to produce in the given material. Also offered in the sale is a signature ‘Dew Drop’ pendant on collarette by Vivianna Torun, a brooch by Arno Malinowski and a brooch and earrings suite in the design of Harald Nielsen. The variety that the Jensen brand provides, in both objects and price, means its appeal spans not only generations and tastes but also budgets. Perhaps this reflects why it’s stood the test of time and is still as popular today as it was over 100 years ago and why it is likely to still be as coveted in another 100.

Specialist’s Insights Sometimes it’s good to ‘tell tales’ As a specialist there’s nothing I enjoy more than cataloguing an item that has its own story to tell. The history of an object can sometimes have huge bearing on value, increasing its appeal well beyond its component parts. Take, for example, lot 297; a Waltham 18k pocket watch. Watches of this design by the American manufactures are not uncommon and thus usually realise between £400-600 at auction, however, this particular lot has an estimate of £5000-7000. Why I hear you ask? Well, it’s all about its story. The original owner of the timepiece was presented it as a gift from the president of the United States for an heroic life saving

act. On the 19th of December in 1886, Captain John C. Cox of the British ship ‘Von Moltke’ rescued the crew of the American barque ‘Ella S Thayer’. It was presented to Captain Cox by president Grover Cleveland who was in office between 1885 and 1889, then again from 1893 to 1897. Another lot with a story to tell is 323; a silver hunger strike suffragette medal. Women’s rights and gender equality has been at the forefront of daily news more than ever in recent years; a movement which has taken generations to get to where it is today, most part in thanks to the women suffragette organisation that was created over a century ago. The medal in question was awarded
to Clara Giveen, who was imprisoned for her involvement in an arson attach at Hurst Park race course on the 13th June 1913. In prison she, like many others, went on a hunger strike, only to be forcibly fed before her release under the cat and mouse act. The medal is being offered with a pre-sale estimate of £6000-8000, reflecting the importance of such historically significant artefacts.
The moral of this story... never assume an item holds just its intrinsic value, it’s sometime the tale behind it that holds its true worth.

Specialist’s Insights The market for 18th and 19th century English watercolours has been tough over the last ten years or so. The market for 18th and 19th century English watercolours has been tough over the last ten years or so. I continue to wait for both established and new buyers to wake up and see what buying opportunities there are in this area of artistic excellence. Known as the ‘English art’ by our continental friends the watercolour was adapted throughout society in the early 18th century and arguably enjoyed a golden age from 1750-1850. Obviously household names such as Turner still sell but in his wake are hundreds of superb antiquarians, vicars, aristocrats, military types and professional artists who painted tens of thousands of exquisite watercolours that
84
routinely go through the UK auction rooms today. Supply certainly currently out ways demand but should not the canny investor or art enthusiast venture into the market now while quality abounds but interest is low? The British watercolourist of the 18th and 19th centuries was invariably out ward looking and keen to travel both within the UK and in Europe so there are views and subjects to suit all. As a medium it is a superb way to explore our rural and urban landscapes and remains accessible and easy to understand even in the 21st century. Lots 415 – 422 demonstrate this variety of subject matter and were consigned by
a private vendor and originally collected around the late Edwardian period. The highlight has to be lot 420, the Venetian view by William Callow RWS (1812-1908). It is a very confident work and exhibits that single stroke precision so evident in his work. The picture has a Boydell Galleries, Liverpool, label verso and is in its original frame. Another watercolourist who mastered this medium is Thomas Bush Hardy (1842-1897) and this is evident in lot 416. He is arguably one of the greatest marine watercolourists of the 19th century. Prolific and well-travelled his work is a wonderful snapshot of coastal life and fishing communities. This and other watercolours in the sale represent real value and a fantastic opportunity to buy into a great British period of art. I don’t think this is an opportunity that should be missed!

19th century British watercolour artists Lots 415-422 have been consigned by a single owner and are examples of the excellence achieved by British watercolour artists in the 19th century. Known as the ‘English Art’ by European artists it was a medium best suited to an artist on a grand tour (inexpensive, small and easy to carry) and for unreliable weather conditions (it is easy
to pack up a watercolour kit at speed), so perfect for visits to mid Wales or exploring Europe. A number of these watercolours were purchased from the Boydell Galleries in Liverpool in the early 20th century and are in there original frames. PROVENANCE: By family descent to the present owner.

EXPLANATION OF CATALOGUING TERMS FOR PAINTINGS, MINIATURES, SCULPTURES AND PRINTS Any statement as to authorship, attribution, origin, date and age, provenance and condition is a statement of opinion and is not to be taken as a statement of fact. Halls Fine Art reserve the right, in forming their opinion, to consult and rely upon any expert or authority considered by them to be reliable. 1. John Constable In our opinion a work by the artist. When the artist’s forename(s) is not known, a series of asterisks, followed by the surname of the artist, whether preceded by an initial or not, indicates that in our opinion the work is by the artist named. 2. Attributed to John Constable In our opinion probably a work by the artist, but less certainty as to authorship is expressed than in the preceding category. 3. Studio of John Constable In our opinion a work by an unknown hand in the studio of the artist which may or may not have been executed under the artist’s direction. 4. Circle of John Constable In our opinion a work by an as yet unidentified but distinct hand, closely associated with the named artist but not necessarily his pupil. 5. Style of… follower of John Constable In our opinion a work by a painter working in the artist’s style, contemporary, but not necessarily his pupil. 6. Manner of John Constable In our opinion a work in the style of the artist and of a later date. 7. After John Constable In our opinion a copy of a known work of the artist. 8. The term signed and/or dated and/or inscribed means that in our opinion the signature and/or date and/or inscription are from the hand of the artist. 9. The term bears a signature and/or date and/or inscription means that in our opinion the signature and/or date and/or inscription have been added by another hand. 10. Dimensions are given height before width. 11. Pictures are framed unless otherwise stated.

Prospective buyers are reminded that coloured gemstones have historically been treated to enhance their appearance. A variety of methods have been, and are currently used to improve both transparency and colour of various gemstones. All yellow and white metals have not been tested. The International Jewellery Trade generally accept these methods. It is not possible for Halls to obtain gemmological reports on all stones offered for sale and therefore all Halls Holding’s estimates assume that gemstones have been enhanced.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO BOOK BUYERS Prospective buyers should be aware that general wear to include; creasing, light foxing, small tears, bumped corners, worn boards or weak spine/joints, will not be specified in the catalogue descriptions. Any substantial losses/wear to include detached boards, detached spines or extensive graffiti will be described as ‘at fault’. Prospective buyers must satisfy themselves with a condition report prior to bidding, Halls Holdings can take no responsibility for condition of purchased lots if condition reports were not requested.
IMPORTANT NOTICE Although every effort is made to note damage and restoration, the absence of such information does not imply that the lot is free from defects. Detailed condition reports and email images can be obtained on request until 4.00pm the day prior to the sale. 136
