Specialist’s Insights Heavy Metal Asian art is a specialism undoubtedly weighted in favour of the various forms of pottery and porcelain that play such an important role in the discipline. One cannot dispute the extraordinary heights of technical and decorative skill that the greatest ceramicists of the Ming and Qing Dynasties were able to achieve. But to think of porcelain alone when we think of Asian art is to ignore a raft of other extraordinary works in other materials. The artisans of China, Japan, South East Asia and Persia also counted many superlative metallurgists among their number. In this auction, many of the great metal-based decorative arts are represented. Bronze figures are of particular interest currently in a market that has become increasingly discerning. In lot 122 we have a parcel gilt figure of Tsongkhapa, a highly influential Buddhist monk, acquired in China in 1919. Typically
4
seated on a cushion base, reserved for only the highest ranking lamas, he has a serene expression, his hands in a dhyani mudra, a gesture of concentrated meditation. On a more impressive scale (though Tsongkhapa is no diminutive figure at all) comes the Khmer bronze statue of the Siva Mahadeva. This representation of the Hindu god Shiva is strikingly similar to one held at the Indonesian National Museum in Jakarta. At 79cm (31 inches) tall, it is quite imposing. Believed to date from the 18th Century, the style of dress and decoration is based on much earlier 7th-11th Century examples and is suffused with detail from the elegant fingers to the little fold of skin over the belly button.
Cloisonné is an art that brings metal and ceramic together, uniting the highly ductile copper with enamel and gold, exemplified by lot 105, a pair of Qing Dynasty buffalo form censers. The Japanese took the art of cloisonné to extraordinary heights of detail, using silver wire in the best examples to form the ‘cells’ which were intricately and painstakingly worked. Lot 190, a superb vase by a true master, Hayashi Kodenji, illustrates this perfectly. For lovers of Asian metalwares there is much to bid on in this catalogue beyond those items described above, including Chinese and Japanese bronzes, Chinese export silverware, Islamic inlaid copper, Omani jewellery and more besides.

FOOTNOTE: John O’Gorman (1911-1977) was a British makeup artist for the motion picture industry, a career which began in 1947 with Mine Own Executioner starring Dulcie Gray. Among no fewer than 69 film credits O’Gorman worked on the first James Bond picture Dr. No (1962) with Ursula Andress as well as Charade (1963) with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant and The Yellow Rolls-Royce (1964) with Ingrid Bergman. Among other stars of the screen to receive the O’Gorman touch were Sophia Loren, Peter Sellers, Frank Sinatra and The Beatles. Such did his reputation become as an expert in his field that actresses like Ingrid Bergman, Ursula Andress and Raquel Welch specifically requested him to do their makeup on shoots.
It was during the filming of The Yellow Rolls Royce with Ingrid Bergman on location in Rome that O’Gorman spotted a pair of Chinese glazed stoneware horses in an antique shop. Though he admired them greatly they were just beyond his means. He mentioned them in passing to Bergman while continuing to work but thought no more about them until the shoot wrapped and everyone was leaving. Ingrid Bergman took O’Gorman to one side and said that there was a crate waiting for him with a present inside. On opening the crate he was delighted to discover the Chinese horses he had so wanted. The horses remained in the family and were passed down to his son and daughter on his death in 1977. £2,500 - £3,000

35 A RARE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE ‘FLOWER AND WAVE’ CENSER AND COVER FOR THE ISLAMIC MARKET Xuande six-character mark, probably Ming Dynasty Of globe form, raised on a spreading foot, the cover surmounted with a garlic-head finial, pierced with six trefoil vents, mirrored by six further larger vents at the shoulder above a broad band of complex foliate piercing, decorated with flower sprays and bands of flowers and foliage between ruyihead borders in typical ‘heaped and piled’ cobalt, the base with flowers and scrolling foliage above a lappet border, the foot with later silver replacement, decorated with further flower and leaf band above a broad border of waves. 37cm high
PROVENANCE: Private UK collection, the property of a gentleman. FOOTNOTE: This piece clearly follows Islamic market influences and tastes, both in the shape and decoration. The precedent for pierced domed incense burners in the region now occupied by Iran, Syria, Iraq and Turkey, can be found in bronze and brass examples from the 10th to 14th Centuries. Persian metallurgy was highly advanced by this time with layering of contrasting metals for decorative effect as well as elaborate surface embossing, chasing, incising and piercing. A typical period example can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection, London, ref.M.1:2-2002, made in Iran circa 1400. Here we see the surface chased with dense flowers and foliage following the pierced design, as with the present lot. The footed
domed form of the present lot seems also to have influenced later incense burners, or mamluk, of the Turkish Ottoman empire from the middle Ming period to the 19th Century. The shape would have been difficult to fire successfully with the weight of the vessel base resting on its stem, while the cover also weakened by the intricate piercing would have been prone to warping and fracturing in the intense heat. Consequently it is likely not many were made, hence its comparative rarity. Originally with a porcelain foot, decorated with flowers and a broad border of waves, this has been replaced with embossed silver, carefully imitating the original pattern, presumed to have been carried out in its Chinese home before finding its way to the West. For comparison, a near identical censer and cover was sold at Poly Auction, Beijing, 5 December 2012, lot 5566. £30,000 - £50,000
