J

ust when we felt like spring would never arrive, the buds pop, and it is time to get outside and play with our pets. Although winter took on a new definition that some of us hope to forget, there

were some moments of merit. The New York Pet Fashion Show benefitting the Mayor’s Alliance for New York City Animals was tremendous fun. Seeing dogs and parents alike decked out in bell bottoms commemorating the 60s and 70s was nothing shy of adorable. Watching rescue pets prance the runway would rival the best of fashion shows. Kudos to Hamptons Pet publisher Gregg Oehler and Ada Nieves for making this event the best one to date. The Fall cover of Hamptons Pet magazine had the honor of being included in the program journal distributed to all of The Westminster Kennel Club (WKC) Dog Show attendees, featuring Sky, last year’s Best In Show winner. Being in NYC provided me the opportunity to interview good friend, David Frei, founder of Angel On A Leash and co-host of The WKC Dog Show, for my television program Let’s Talk About Animals. David predicted four of the top finalists but also said that “the one certainty of the Best In Show is that you can never predict the winner.” When I saw the judge handle Ch Tashtins

Pet magazine the success it is. Travel with us to Chicago and The Talbott Hotel, where petfriendly takes on a whole new meaning. Then enjoy the beauty of architect and owner Heather Johnston’s award-winning, pet-friendly Casabrava home. Jody Miller-Young shares what inspires our friend and supermodel Kristy Hinze-Clark’s surreal life, and what truly matters is her family and dogs. Miller-Young then wraps up The New York Pet Fashion Show, the largest pet fashion and rescue event in the country. Dr. Patrick Mahaney dishes on the latest seasonal health tips and how to provide the best care for seniors, while Dr. Marty Goldstein explains the importance of including supplements in all pet diets. And according to Dr. Chris Bessent, herbs can bring back a healthy balance in a pet’s well-being. Andrea Arden tackles some of the most common behavioral issues dogs have. On the feline side, Debbie Glovatsky shows us how so many have fallen in love with Waffles, a therapy cat in training. Nikki Moustaki gives us an inside look with Katie Cleary, a model, actress and producer of the new documentary Give Me Shelter. Our very own Tiffany Keeth takes us on a tour of Animal Ark’s mission of caring for all animals. One of our goals is to end euthanasia in America’s shelters; Updike when he wrote, “Dreams come true. ate one night while browsing Petfinder.com, I immediately fell in love with a tiny, orange kitten. The next day, I could not get to the shelter fast enough to scoop up this furry bundle of joy, who I

dubbed “Waffles.” Full of personality, this brave, fun-seeking missile of a kitten showed me early on that he had an enormous capacity to love and be loved. His optimistic curiosity is infectious. He loves people and people love Waffles. I had heard about therapy animals and what a positive impact they can have on people living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. I could not shake the thought of what it would be like to not only have to say goodbye to your home, belongings and independence, but quite possibly your beloved pet. Maybe, just maybe, Waffles could bring a smile to the face of someone missing their cat.

As a therapy cat in training, Waffles visits a local nursing facility, sharing his feline charm with residents and staff. Just a glimpse of him rolling through the hallways in his signature Waffle Wagon elicits double takes and leaves everyone smiling. With a lineup of lady friends who adore entertaining him in their rooms, he often stops off for one-on-one visits. By just being there and letting someone pet him, Waffles connects with residents in ways that many people cannot. Their eyes light up as they fondly remember the cats they once had, reliving cherished memories and sharing stories. One resident had lost her ability to see or speak. Knowing of her love for cats, the staff placed her hand gently on Waffles’ head so she could feel his fur and pet him. Though her eyes could no longer see, they lit up like stars. Waffles has just a few supervised visits left before he earns his certification through Love on a Leash®, the Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy. As a therapy team, it is all about trust. It is my job to watch for his cues and know when it is time to rest, allowing him to do his job of sharing his unconditional love. LET'S GET STROLLIN Sporting my Puppia harness

arades, costumes, delicacies and…dogs? Yes! Cinco de Mayo, the national holiday celebrating all things Mexican, has gone canine. And no selfrespecting fashion hound wants to be caught dressing out of sync. After all, Cinco de Mayo is about overcoming great adversity, commemorating the battle that took place on May 5th, 1862 in Puebla, Mexico, against the French. Against all odds, they prevailed, resulting in a celebration of Mexican culture, heritage and pride for Latinos everywhere. So be prepared on this historic day by checking out the best tips for dressing to wow. From Chihuahuas and Cresteds to Cockers and Cavaliers, this holiday is an opportunity to rock the reds, whites and greens of the Mexican flag. The many parties, performances, street festivals and parades require a Cinco de Mayo canine fashionista to have a few festive creations in the closet. Traditional Mexican apparel is all about making a statement with lots of color and embellishments like embroidery and trims. For little fur men, a decorative sombrero is a must. No canine outfit would be complete without a fun, striped poncho or a fancy mariachi vest. Take it up a notch; match mariachi pants and a jacket with cool dude shades. The señoritas will be batting their eyelashes in blues, reds, yellows and greens, featuring lots of ruffles and frills. Say “goodbye, wallflower” and “hello, life of the party” with festive jewelry. For Cinco de Mayo, embrace beads of all sizes, colors and shapes. Feel free to go big or go subtle, depending on one’s personal flavor. What is muy importante is to have fun. Because, after all, Cinco de Mayo is all about the celebration! And no, Fido, you

I couldn’t think of anything more creative than working with three of my best friends as models!” So what is life like for her pampered pups? “They are so lucky!” Hinze-Clark laughs. “They love to run around. We have six acres at the house, so there is plenty of room. Brandon loves to swim in the pool; we cannot keep him out. The other two don’t like to get their hair wet!” Just as at home on the water as on land, Brandon, Ava and Elwood are the perfect mast-cots on the couple’s 300-foot yacht, Athena, the fourth largest sailing vessel in the world. Dylan has a pony, so after her school, she has a little ride.” Philanthropists with a shared passion for animals and oceans, Clark and Hinze-Clark are fierce advocates of rescuing, and generously give to many shelters and marine conservation organizations around the world. Hinze-Clark even studied marine biology at the State University of New York. The family loves to travel, and of course, Brandon, Ava and Elwood come along. Whether it is favorites Mustique or Tahiti, a trip to New York to check on the Manhattan apartment renovation, or the Bedford horse farm purchased from Hollywood producer/ director Ron Howard, the furry kids go in platinum-style. No matter where they are though, the super cozy moments together are the ones they relish. “Dylan often wakes up at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning, and always comes into our bed,” she muses. “We’ve got the three dogs in bed, too. I said to Jim one night, ‘We’re going to have to get a custom-sized bed, because this one is getting way too small!’” Homes, yachts, horses and travel make up Hinze-Clark’s luxe life. Founded in 1981, Animal Ark’s mission is to care for all animals taken in while inspiring environmental stewardship through wildlife education. Home to primarily North American predators and a few exotic species, the Ark goes to great lengths to simulate their natural habitat, all the while incorporating environmentally responsible energy practices like solar and Animal Ark recognizes that it is essential to educate the youth of America about the importance of animal welfare. Welcoming students of all ages, groups are encouraged to participate through classroom programs, field trips and lesson plans. Building lasting relationships, students can even check in on

How did Rubin get the idea for the show? “I adopted a dog from a high kill shelter, who had been bounced around and was about to be euthanized,” she explains. “She was this funny looking, skinny dog and had all kinds of issues from neglect. And, she was extraordinary. I called her Mother Theresa in a fur suit! If someone was sick, she would lay next to them. Children could poke and pull at her. And I kept thinking, this is a dog that could’ve easily been killed.” That led to Rubin rescuing more pets and learning the overwhelming truth about the millions looking for homes. She also saw how many amazing animals were available. Enlisting celebrities to help spread the message was a nobrainer. “When you see someone who has Golden Globes, a beautiful wife, house and all the trappings we say goes with success and happiness in America, and they’re saying what means the most to them, changed their lives the most and brings them the greatest joy is a three-legged mutt, that is compelling,” Rubin describes. “In the interviews, they are vulnerable and open because they’re talking about what’s closest to their heart.”

Rescued as a senior, Stella cozies up with her favorite girl, Georgina Bloomberg.

For others, the saving of lives seems reciprocated. NCIS’ Pauley Perrette credits her dogs with helping her through a harrowing time with her ex-husband, who had been stalking her for years. At one point, the judge allowed him to live in her house they had once shared. Unable to cope, Perrette moved out with one bag of clothes, her dogs and her laptop. She says she does not know how she would have prevailed without her pups by her side offering comfort and protection. Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Danielle Staub understands. She shares how she was sexually abused by her stepfather, starting when she was a little girl. Her rescued ChihuahuaTerrier mix would lie under the bed when these assaults were
