Millions of pets are euthanized each year in shelters.
W
elcome animal lovers! Pet overpopulation is a serious problem. Just one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years. In seven years, one
female cat and her offspring can produce an incredible 370,000 kittens (Animal Rescue Directory). Additionally, the cost of feeding and housing unwanted pets is astronomical. The US government spends $2 billion a year in animal control. Millions of pets are euthanized each year in shelters. That’s right, millions. Local organizations work tirelessly to rescue unwanted pets from kill shelters with little to no financial aid, and desperately need support. Purchasing a puppy from a store often times supports the puppy mill industry, where puppy parents are forced to live in deplorable conditions with no love or little hope of escape. Help end the abusive cycle by adopting; don’t shop! You’re invited… Almost everyone loves parties and pets, so let’s team up and have some fun! Become a Pet Hero by joining Pet Circle’s national chain party. By hosting a get-together with friends to raise money for pets, one will receive an official Pet Circle membership certificate. 75% of the donations one collects will go to their favorite animal welfare organization with the remaining balance being used to support public service awareness programs and other worthy animal welfare charities. Imagine how many pets could be saved while bringing awareness to animal causes and benefitting one’s Visit petcircle.org for a downloadable Parties 4 Pets Hostess kit and see how you can qualify for the elegant Pet Hero Pin created by London Jewelers. Sophisticated Living is not just reserved for humans.

n the spirit of summer, Charles Bowden says, “Summertime is always the best of what might be,” and this issue of HP is sure to delight. I am excited that our readers will see what
some amazing people have done to save dogs in Yulin China. Brian Fischler shares with us Pilots N Paws new educational program, Brocks Kids Corner and their new books for kids. Tiffany Keeth shines a light on award-winning nature photographer Suzi Eszterhas. Dr. Marty explains the link between ear infections and allergies, and Dr. Mahaney warns of the clinical signs of seasonal allergies. Jody Miller-Young gives a facelift to the American Pit Bull, and enlightens us on the amazing life of John Paul DeJoria and his belief of the “Culture of Giving.” Two experts in luxury design, J. Kent Martin and Nathan Taylor, proves that Sophisticated Living is not just reserved for humans. Andrea Arden lets the cat out of the bag, and explains that dogs are not the only ones with tricks up their sleeves. The New York Pet Fashion Show broke all media records with their last show, and are the world’s largest pet fashion show for rescues. Audrey Hepburn said, “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m possible”. As we enjoy the beautiful days of summer, think about fostering, pet adoption and what is possible when people work together to save animals in need.

complex business strategy or even the time to second-guess themselves, they followed their instincts and led the pet market into a new phase—luxury, lifestyle-driven pet products. Combining two life-long passions—interior design and a profound love for animals—J. and Nathan created a business that has gone from “startup concept to singular success” in less than a decade. Before UL, they were a seasoned duo of devoted dog dads running multiple design-related businesses from their home. As the luxury pet industry came into its own, so did their spontaneous startup. Today, UL is found in pet boutiques and retailers worldwide. “In retrospect, designing pet-related products was a very natural extension of our passion for helping people live well,” explains J. “For us, it didn’t seem that out of the box. We love our pets and we love great design. Style is not reserved for humans.” As the luxury pet industry continues to thrive, consumers no longer have

Contrary to popular belief, the Pit Bull is too sweet and trainable for its own good.
the media highlights the tragedies, experts are actually finding that these dogs are no more aggressive than perhaps a Poodle. Dr. Brian Hare, associate professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Duke University and co-founder of Dognition, says, “There is a lot of speculation about dog breeds, especially for the Pit Bull. The truth is, there is no conclusive scientific evidence that says they are any different than other dogs. In fact, science suggests there is more difference between individual dogs within a breed than there is from breed to breed.” While advocates profess their sweet demeanor, history takes it one step further, providing a timeline showing their gentle, trusting nature and eagerness to please. With a rich history as America’s family dog, throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries they were called The Nanny Dog, for their gentleness with and love for children. Their loyalty made them exceptional military dogs, and often the featured mascot on WWII posters. The first decorated canine war hero and the only dog to be promoted to sergeant was Stubby, an American Pit Bull Terrier. Furthermore, the United Kennel Club recommends they not be used for guard dogs because of their propensity of being too friendly with strangers.

How could you tear someone’s family apart because a dog looks a particular way?” Pet photographer, Adam Goldberg, was introduced to Pit Bulls while working for the Humane Society of Broward County. Getting to know these dogs inspired him to pick up a camera. “I didn’t know anything about Pit Bulls, except what I had heard on the news,” Adam recounted. “What I learned was how sweet they were and how well they listened. It was easy for me to get their picture.” Wanting to capture the personality of each dog, he found Pitties to be natural goofballs. His Pit Bull Picture Project followed, showcasing them as the funny dogs they are. The Huffington Post picked up on it and his project went national. While these animals are caught in a disappearing act of diminishing habitat, pollution and climate change, one person with an untamable drive, a passion for nature, and a desire to make the world a better place took the leap to make her life a catalyst for change. Wildlife photographer Suzi Eszterhas’ journey began when she quit her day job, jumping at the chance to stay in a bush camp in Africa. What was supposed to be a few months ended up being three years. Fast forward to today, and she is now published in over 100 publications including TIME, Smithsonian and BBC. A

Suzi Eszterhas' award-winning photography brilliantly captures wildlife rescue.
Baby Animal Prints by Suzi Suzi believes that fostering the connection between children and wildlife should begin as early as possible. With an immense amount of childhood development occurring before the age of two, decorating children’s walls with images of animals and nature not only gives them the visual stimulation needed from infancy, but as they grow, helps nourish a love for animals from the start. Baby Animal Prints by Suzi, her online art gallery, specializes in nursery and kids’ room decor. “Children seem to love animals from the start, and if we encourage this by showing them imagery, whether it is nursery prints on the wall or books, this love of animals will flourish,” says Suzi. “Mothers tell me that my baby animal prints make them feel peaceful while breastfeeding or just holding their babies. And pediatricians tell me how having my prints in their offices help to soothe sick or anxious children about to get a shot. I think

raining is often used to prevent or reduce unwanted behaviors, but it can also greatly enrich the life of a cat and its owner. Aside from the all-important litter box life skill,
teaching a cat to have a few tricks up their sleeve can be a wonderful way to spend quality time together, and to help prevent behavioral issues such as scratching and biting. A cat can be trained to do many things including sitting, lying down, rolling over, shaking and coming when called. Using positive, rewardbased training methods is not only the most effective, but it also fosters a cooperative relationship. Teaching any animal requires finding the right motivators and mustering up the patience to go at the student’s pace. In many cases, starting with lure (food) training is the moved around, the cat will follow it. So pet parents should move it in such a way to elicit the wanted behavior. For example, if teaching a cat to sit, hold the lure at their nose level, then move it slightly up and back towards their rear, so their rear goes to the floor. Regardless of the desired behavior, one needs a way of telling

their cat that a specific behavior is what earns them a reward (i.e. the lure). A marker such as a clicker or a word like “yes” or “good” are good options. For example, when luring a cat to sit, use the clicker or chosen marker word the moment their rear hits the ground, followed by the reward. Repetition of the pattern of luring, marking and rewarding will result in a cat who understands that following the lure into a specific position results in hearing the marker, which is followed by the reward. Once the cat is reliably responding to the lure, add a cue or command word right before making the lure motion. Eventually, the steps will be: cue or command, lure, mark and reward. With practice, the goal is to have the cat respond to just the verbal It is always advisable to wait to add cues until pet parents are confident a behavior will happen. This way, the word or phrase is connected to a behavior. Every fun training session one has with their cat is like a deposit in a savings account for cementing a strong bond, a cooperative relationship, and the prevention of numerous behavior issues. Make a training plan, teach the cat a few tricks, and get ready to impress friends and debunk the myth that cats can’t be trained.

pring has sprung and summer is almost upon us, which means numerous environmental changes are occurring that can affect a pet’s health. Blooming flowers and trees, high levels of moisture,
warmer temperatures and whipping winds stir up environmental allergens like pollen and mold, or dust and dirt. These irritants can affect a canine or feline companion’s eyes, nose, skin and other body systems. Recognizing the symptoms is the first step to faster relief for one’s four-legged friend.
Eye Redness & Discharge Allergens can end up in the eyes and cause inflammation of the conjunctiva (tissue lining the inner eyelids) and sclera (white of the eyes). Eye irritation leads to scleritis (“bloodshot eyes,” or engorgement of the blood vessels of the sclera), conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva), discharge, blepharospasm (squinting), pawing at the eyes or rubbing the face on household surfaces.
COUGHING, GAGGING AND INCREASED SWALLOWING ARE COMMON SIGNS OF RESPIRATORY ALLERGENS.
Licking, Chewing, Scratching & Hot Spots The skin is the body’s largest organ, so many sites can be affected by allergens. Skin inflammation prompts pets to self soothe by licking, chewing and scratching at the feet, armpit, groin, flanks and areas having skin-on-skin contact. A pet’s efforts to provide

s it a bird? No, it is a plane, but not just any plane. It is Pilots N Paws (PNP), a not-for-profit that flies homeless animals from bad situations to loving homes. PNP was founded in 2008 by Debi Boies
and has rescued over 130,000 animals, many of them from kill shelters. “Pilots N Paws is made up of a network of over 5,200 private pilots in the US,” explains Barb Rudicel, Director of Children’s Education for PNP. “They are pilots who love to fly and volunteer their time and planes to help animals in need.”
WE FELT THE NEED TO REACH CHILDREN AND EDUCATE THEM ABOUT PET RESPONSIBILITY. To further their efforts, PNP is launching a children’s program called “Brock’s Kids Corner,” named after the founder’s rescued Doberman. “We felt the need to reach children and educate them about pet responsibility and as to why so many animals are homeless,” says Barb. “We do that through our children’s book, Radar’s Dream and a coloring book called Too Many Puppies, Too Many Kittens. Partnering with schools and teachers, we come into the classroom with a pilot and a rescue dog to meet the kids and read the book. There is also a song that was written that the children easily learn and sing with us. The kids are fascinated to meet the pilots, and are instantly in love with the rescue dog.” “The whole experience for the children is very interactive,” Barb continues. “We provide the kids with coloring books, some pages
they learned, and hopefully talk about rescuing and adopting.” FROM TOP, PNP’s Shannan

which include expansion to over 30 locations throughout the US and Canada, and a milestone marking the 1.5 millionth meal served to a pet in need. “We were thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive turnout,” says Blaine Novak of Healthy Pet Magazine. “It means so much to all of us involved in the program, and most importantly, to the dogs and cats.” With an eye to the future, VCA Charities Pet Food Pantry has already set its sights on new and more ambitious achievements. Kostas Kontopanos, President of Hill’s Pet Nutrition North America, has established a goal of serving 5 million meals to pets in need over the next few years, while also expanding the number of Pet Food Pantries in the greater NYC area, beginning with All Souls Church this summer. between VCA Charities and Hill’s Pet Nutrition in support of economically challenged families and their furry loved ones. VCA Charities Pet Food Pantry, created by VCA Charities and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, began in 2010 as a resource to provide pet food to pet parents stricken by the economic downturn. The program allows families to continue to care for, and draw emotional support from, the animals they love as they struggle through financial hardship. “We all could use the love of an animal, and those struggling
