S

ummer, at last! Excitement mounts as we enter the pet event season and enjoy romping in the grass with our dogs. Sharing the lawn with dogs is always a pleasure, so my husband, Bob, and I

have decided to honor the Pet Hero Award™ (PHA) winners and Pet Philanthropy Circle’s new partner, the Dog Film Festival, with an Afternoon Tea. After all, it seems like a fun way to spend a summer afternoon in the Hamptons. If you have listened to Tracie Hotchner on Dog Talk® Radio and want to meet her, this is your opportunity. As the author of both The Dog Bible and The Cat Bible, she is now busier than ever with her new venture as founder of the Dog Film Festival. If you miss the Afternoon Tea on July 31st at Hobby Hill, one can catch her at Guild Hall on August 2nd in East Hampton; October at the PHA; or at one of the other Dog Film Festival locations across the U.S. The PHA 5th Anniversary Ceremony is on the horizon, coming up on October 7th at Gotham Hall in NYC with Georgina Bloomberg and Prince Lorenzo Borghese co-chairing. David Frei, NBC Commentator and former Westminster Host, will be co-hosting with me. This is a great opportunity for you to meet many of the country’s outstanding animal advocates including Humanitarian of the Year, Naomi Judd, or the CEO of the American Humane Association, Robin Ganzert. Hope to see you there—be sure to save the dates! To learn more about the Tea Party, the PHA and the Dog Film

his life. While most of us are asleep, Bruce is just getting home. But before climbing into his cozy bed with Janet, his wife of 35 years, there PHOTOGRAPHY BRUCE BECK

is Madison, the Australian Labradoodle, who expects some quality time. “As soon as I walk through the door, Madison comes running off one of our couches,” says Bruce. “I say to her excitedly, ‘Hello Madison.’

WE THEN GO FOR OUR WALK AND IT IS ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF MY DAY.

She then gets up on the couch closest to the front door, and I give her a nice rub down and show her lots of love.” “Our first dog was Pepper, a gorgeous white and black Portuguese Water Dog that the entire family absolutely loved until she passed in November 2013,” continues Bruce. “Her passing was the hardest thing I ever had to go through as an adult. We felt we would never get another dog again, and certainly weren’t ready at the time. Then, in 2014, we babysat for my son John and his wife Jordana’s Labradoodle, and we just fell in love with the breed.” Janet is as much of a dog lover as Bruce is, and always makes sure Madison is looking her best. “My wife likes a well-groomed, few weeks at The Cut Above in Larchmont, New York,” says Bruce. "Madison has her own look as she always has two bows. If it is Valentine’s Day, she has hearts. St. Patrick’s Day, the bows are green, and Christmas is when she has her own Christmas look. Amy Meara, the owner of The Cut Above, always does a fantastic job and Madison never knocks the bows out.” Although full of love and fluff, Bruce doubts Madison could be a first draft pick in the world of sports. “One of Madison’s favorite things is to play ball, but she plays keep away. She has not learned the value of returning the ball and then running to get it again. I have to con her to get the ball out of her mouth. She hasn’t learned to be a team player which bothers me as someone who covers sports,” laughs Beck.

singer. And while his onscreen persona and South Bronx upbringing show his tough side, it is his four-pound Maltese, Sophie, who brings out his softer side. “Last year, I wrote my memoir, I Only Know Who I Am When I Am Somebody Else,” starts Danny. “I dictated my life story to Siri who was like my assistant, and the whole time I did, there was Sophie sitting under my left arm. I would be there at times for eight hours, and Sophie would not leave me until the end of the day. She would not move or budge.” “We are extremely close,” explains Danny. “Sophie is a great lap dog. She hangs onto me like she is part of my body. I sleep on my left side and Sophie will sleep under my left arm with her head near my heart. I feel as if she is feeling the beat of my heart not know what I would do without her.” His love for animals has been from day one. “I have loved animals forever,” says Danny. “I am the type of guy who has a tough time killing an ant on the floor. If I see there is an ant in my house, I will pick it up and put it outside. I love all animals.” At times, this passion for pets has put Danny in some memorable situations. “To give you an idea, two Christmases ago, a friend and I were on 9th Avenue heading to dinner, and we saw a dog running in and out of traffic. I went crazy as I was screaming at my friend, Louie, to get the dog. We finally got the dog out of traffic and put him in the car as he did not have any Danny Aiello with Carol Alt at Hamptons magazine Memorial Day party,

Pet Philanthropy Circle’s

2016 Pet Heroes It was no small feat for PPC to select who among the best of the best in animal welfare would earn a Pet Hero Award, but each of these winners is truly deserving. As a child, when did your love of animals first begin? It began on the farm where my grandparents lived. As a child I loved to go there just to hang out with the cows and the pigs, and a Collie named Duchess. They were all my friends. One winter while my mom was in the hospital, all my siblings wanted to stay at home, but I chose to be near my friends, the animals. As PPC’s Humanitarian of the Year recipient this year, what are some of your most memorable philanthropic moments? Seeing five Marine war dogs reunited with their handlers. I’ll never forget witnessing that bond. The Marines were all suffering from PTSD and to get the dogs back in their care made a significant difference. With more rescues, non-profits and programs in place than ever before, where do you think the need is most prevalent? Puppy mills are despicable, and we need much tougher laws against them and the abusers. One of my biggest passions was is intentionally killed, it is a felony, rather than a misdemeanor. How many dogs do you currently have? We are currently the proud parents to four dogs, including a rescue dog that we found on a cold, Christmas morning. A neighbor found a litter of puppies that someone left, and we chose her. She’s the love of our life.

Naomi Judd with animal star, Crystal, at the launch of the Humane Bond Caucus.

From Hamptons Pet, thank you for all of your philanthropic achievements, and congratulations to this year’s PPC Pet Hero Award winners.

HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR

Naomi Judd Judd advocates for changes to the National Defense Authorization Act, pictured with Congressman Gus Bilirakis, Sgt Brent Grommet and MWD Matty. Since retiring from singing, Naomi Judd has devoted her celebrity to building a better world. Her charity work Liver Center, M.A.D.D., Parents Television Council, MakeA-Difference Day, Women’s World Peace Initiative, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and her own July 4th Judd’s Annual Food Drive. Ms. Judd has also been a tireless advocate for returning America’s Military Working Dogs to U.S. soil when they retire. As AHA’s Ambassador, Ms. Judd and AHA President and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert pleaded their case before Congress, who finally passed legislation ensuring their repatriation. Ms. Judd also supported the launch of the Congressional Humane Bond Caucus, a voice promoting the value and treatment of animals.

OUTSTANDING ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANIZATION

American Humane Association Robin Ganzert, CEO The American Humane Association (AHA) is the country’s oldest national humane organization, one that extends its protection to animals and children alike. It positively impacts hundreds of millions of animals each year—more than any other organization in the world. In late May, the Association took part in two dramatic transcontinental transports to save more of the 3-4 million animals relinquished to shelters that are euthanized each year. The organization has saved and sheltered more than 81,000 animals in just the past 11 years. The AHA also works to help ensure the humane treatment of more farm animals than any other organization. Among other victories, the Taco Bell chain will switch to 100% American Humane Certified cage-free eggs by 2017. Peet’s Coffee, Caribou Coffee, and Einstein Bros. Bagels all announced they will switch to cage-free eggs, and will be working with the organization to improve farm animal welfare policies.

OUTSTANDING PET

Amazing Grace In July 2006, seven dogs were loaded into a gas chamber at Liberty Animal Control in Georgia. When the control officer returned to empty the chamber thirty-two minutes later, she was shocked at what she saw. A Beagle-mix dog was still alive and gasping for air. Horrified, the control officer transported her to a local veterinarian office, and the pup became national news. Phil Draughon was smitten by the dog’s tale and adopted her. He named her Gracie, and she became the inspiration of a campaign headed by Phil, Animal Aid USA and The MOMS Rescue. In honor of her, “The Amazing Grace Caravan” traveled over 2,500 miles from New Jersey to Georgia to save over 400 dogs in one weekend. This epic movement spread awareness of saving shelter pets and banning gas chambers. Over 25,000 signatures were collected from across the U.S. demanding that Georgia ban the use of gas chambers. “Gracie’s Law” went into effect and has inspired other states to ban gas chambers.

ANIMAL WELFARE EDUCATION

Heart Brad Goldberg, Chairman, Treasurer Heart provides humane animal welfare educational programs at no charge to public schools and non-profit agencies. Their educational curriculum teaches compassion and respect for all living beings and is taught to students of all ages, ethnicities, religious beliefs and socio-economic status. These services are currently provided to educators, administrators and community leaders in NYC, Chicago, Indianapolis and Portland with the goal of replicating these remarkable programs throughout the nation. Their mission is in perfect harmony with the Pet Philanthropy Circle belief that if we reach young children, they can teach their parents. Hooray for Heart!

RESCUE ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR

Jamie’s Rescue Jamie Robinson, Founder After becoming the first woman photographer for CBS news, serving as the White House photographer during the Jimmy Carter Administration, and then back to NYC working with Barbara Walters, Jamie decided to follow her passion to help homeless animals. She opened Jamie’s Rescue in 2007 when she moved to Miami. She focuses on death row dogs taken from Miami-Dade Animal Services, pregnant dogs and puppies. Most of these rescues come from dogs dropped on the side of the road, discarded in abandoned houses or left at her door. Working virtually single-handedly, Jamie rescues approximately 350 puppies and 100 adult dogs per year. Many are flea infested and suffering from anemia when they arrive; parvo, ringworm and distemper are not uncommon. All are accepted, nurtured back to health, and spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Vet bills are astronomical and any help is appreciated. Visit jamiesrescue.com.

FOUNDATION OF THE YEAR

The Petco Foundation Charlie Piscitello, SVP, Chief People Officer and President with Susan Kogut, Executive Director. Since 1999, the Petco Foundation has invested more than $157 million in lifesaving animal welfare work across the country to assist pets in finding forever homes. With over 4,000 animal welfare partners, the Foundation inspires and empowers communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and numerous other lifesaving initiatives. In partnership with Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country, the Petco Foundation has helped more than 4.9 million pets—and counting—find homes with families who love them.

OUTSTANDING JUNIOR OF THE YEAR

Matthew Talbot The future of animal welfare rests in the hands of the youth. At the young age of nine, Matthew Talbot successfully encouraged other children to join him in a Hammonton, New Jersey project named, “Paws for a Cause.” Launching this awareness campaign in his school saved 120 dogs from high kill areas in Georgia. The following summer, Matthew, his mother, Karen Talbot, and two others were instrumental in putting together The Georgia Puppy Caravan, the largest rescue operation in Georgia state history. Animal Aid, cofounded by Karen and Prince Lorenzo Borghese, enabled the caravans to become a monthly journey and have saved over 13,000 animals. Matthew continues to coordinate and organize every out-of-state arrival of the monthly caravans. In addition to being the official cinematographer, director and editor of Animal Aid’s rescue projects, Matthew has also produced three independent short films, two have already been selected for film festivals.

ecoming an interior designer was not my first career choice. At the age of five, I actually told my family that when I grew up, I was going to be a “professional animal rescuer.” But life is funny like that. As a young

adult, I quickly learned I had both the knack and talent for interior design, and over time, I rose in the ranks in the industry. But I never lost my passion for animals. I often wondered how I could turn my love for design and animals into a business. After all, more people than ever are pet parents, and they should not have to choose between having a beautiful home and creating space for their furry family members. I wanted to find a way to design furniture and interiors where pet owners and their pets live in harmony without fear of destruction. Enter, The Livable Home. I started out small, testing out fabrics and furniture placement in my own home, eventually sharing my discoveries with clients who had pets, and began to design beautiful

spaces that would be comfortable and safe for the entire family, whether they had two feet or four.

Today, when I work with pet-loving clients, my approach to each project revolves around the idea that the space needs to be both durable and cleanable, while also maintaining style and comfort. Each home is unique, but when undertaking any new construction or renovation, I always advise my clients to think about everything from a vantage point from the floor up. We review their lifestyle, needs, and how each space in their home should function to best serve their family. Kitchen, pantries and mudrooms are often the spaces we designate for our pets to eat, so I tend to create “pet feeding stations” in these areas, where everything is contained. My goal is to create an environment that flows with the rest of the home, where pets can access their food and water in a way that does not interfere with their parents’ ability to use these spaces for their intended purpose. I have designed cabinets with drawers for food bowls and treats that can be hidden if desired, but still easily accessible. In my home, I created sleek, wall-mounted food bowls and a water fountain encased in a cabinet that looks like actual furniture. Guests would never guess it is a supersecret feeding station for furry ones.

walks of life; BELOW, Oliver loves the cat proof fabric that won't snag.

I am on a fantastic journey helping pet lovers create stylish, livable homes for every member of the family to enjoy.

After the kitchen, the next busiest areas of a pet lover’s home are the media room and bedrooms. My clients who let their pet on the furniture love items from my Livable Home line. This line is specifically designed for pets and their owners, with stylish fabrics that feel good, are incredibly durable, and easy to clean. Both fabric selection and furniture placement are important components; together, they help alleviate concerns over possible damage (for both pets and unruly house guests!). I always recommend washable linens for clients who allow their pets on the bed. Pet parent’s bedding should be less formal and definitely not need professional laundering. A chic bedroom can have casual linens without compromising on style. With any design project, my goal is to create a home that can be enjoyed by everyone. When that happens, we have a comfortable, harmonious, gorgeous space. So while my childhood dream of becoming a “professional animal rescuer” never quite came to fruition, I am on a fantastic journey helping pet lovers create stylish, livable homes for every member of the family to enjoy. And for me, that is the best of both worlds. thelivablehomestore.com.

every major win for cats, one can find Alley Cat Allies. Take Atlantic City, for example. After local animal control began trapping and killing cats on the boardwalk in 2000, Alley Cat Allies stepped in to help both the cats and Atlantic City. The Boardwalk Cats Project and its TNR program stopped births of new kittens, and the population naturally and humanely declined by 72 percent in 15 years. “We’re here because the cats need us,” says Becky, the organization’s founder and president. “We were the first national organization that fought for the rights of cats, and today, we are able to have a much greater impact because our message resonates with more and more people, and more and more communities every year.” Alley Cat Allies now has more than 600,000 supporters worldwide. more than 62 million children, educators and families since 2009 and is an education resource for the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and others.

LUCKY PUTS ON HIS CAPE AND FIGHTS BACK AGAINST BAD GUYS WHO ARE RUINING GREEN SPACE. Lucky has been “cartoonized” as TurfMutt. He puts on his blanket like a superhero’s cape and fights back against the “bad guys” who are ruining green space—Carbon Creep, Dust Demon, Dr. Runoff and Heat Freak, which depict the elements that are harmful to our environment. As TurfMutt, Lucky works with a band of superheroes—Professor Botany, Green Ranger, Big Rooty, Water Warrior and The Oxygenator—to inspire kids and families to “save the planet, one yard at a time.” This season we are also appearing on the Emmy Awardwinning Lucky Dog television show. It airs Saturday mornings as part of the CBS Dream Team, It’s Epic block of programming. The show follows animal trainer Brandon McMillan who rescues hard-to-love, out-of-control, untrained, and otherwise unadoptable dogs. McMillan turns them into perfect pets and helps them find forever families.
