Another winter has come and has swept away all the doubts and uncertainties of the riders who were constantly looking at the weather forecast, anxiously waiting for that damn anticyclone to get out of the way, of the store owners who, as a result of a glorious winter like the one in 2017, have filled the shelving of brand new equipment, of the resorts that have planned new events and spaces for us snowboarders. Another winter has finally arrived and here at Sequence we are ready with the first winter issue, full of exclusive contents: we interviewed freeride legend Jeremy Jones, we gave you a sneak peek of the new video project Sequence Movie Zero, talking with some of its protagonists, we had a chat with Alex “Peppino” Stewart from Rusty Toothbrush who explained how fun but not so easy was to realize Poveri Noi and we went to the Lofoten Islands with the Nitro team. But that’s not all from Sequence! Soon we will be online with our new web app www.sequencebuyersguide.com where you can find and compare all the snowboard brands distributed in Europe; and go take a look on www.sequence-magazine.com and on our social channels, where you can read all the latest news and features. Then, if you went looking for Sequence in your store but it was gone, you can subscribe or buy your copies online at www.sequence-magazine.com/shop. But now let’s turn off the phones for a whole day and enjoy the first and so much dreamed powder descents: but first there’s the start of the season ceremony, a nice yellow sign on the snow! 6

THE DAILY NEWS BY DAVIDE FIORASO

R AV E L S O N E O’C O N N O R, N E W C A P I TA P R O S During the last North American Capita sales meeting held in November, two new riders of the global team were announced: we are talking about Mike Ravelson and Johnny O’Connor. Both veterans of the Seattle company have earned their place among the pros thanks to the hard and unceasing work of promoting the brand through crazy video parts. Speaking of video parts, JOC has just released his first pro part while RAV, together with Brandon Cocard, has created an interesting project called EP where music and snowboarding are well mixed together.

NIDECKER BUYS LOW PRESSURE STUDIOS AND ROME SNOWBOARDS A new era of snowboarding has begun. With two separate financial operations, the Swiss group Nidecker led by brothers Xavier, Henry and Cedric and already owner of the brands Yes, Jones, Now and Flow, acquired the majority of the Low Pressure Studio group (Bataleon, Lobster and Switchback) by Jorgen Karlsen, founder and inventor of the 3BT technology. At the same time Nidecker also bought the iconic American brand Rome, founded 17 years ago by Josh Reid, which will be managed in Europe by the Amsterdam offices of LPS, while the research and development and the design department will remain in Waterbury, Vermont.

BURTON AND NITRO IN THE EUROPEAN OUTDOOR GROUP Burton and Nitro, two well-known names in the snowboarding world, joined the European Outdoor Group. Their entry into the EOG, as the first active members exclusively in the field of board sports, opens up a new reality and highlights a relationship of synergy with the traditional outdoor industry. “The EOG is pleased to welcome Burton and Nitro as members” said Mark Held, EOG general secretary. “This expansion is a clear reflection of the evolution of the term outdoor”. Salomon is also in the process of adding the snowboard category to its current membership status.

E N D E AV O R B U Y S S A N D B OX H E L M E T S Endeavor Design Inc., the Canadian company owner of Endeavor Snowboards and Airhole Facemasks, has acquired the helmet brand Sandbox to globally implement its Canadian snowboard products. Endeavor has taken over the intellectual properties of Sandbox from founders Kevin and Melle Sansalone and will launch the 2019/20 collection next January. Sandbox was founded in 2004 in Whistler initially as a snowboard film production company by Kevin Sansalone, who in 2007 turned it into a brand of helmets and accessories.

NITRO AND SWISS AIRLINES ANNOUNCE A MARKETING PARTNERSHIP Nitro has announced a marketing partnership with Swiss International Air Lines for the 2018/19 winter. This collab began in October with the Run To The Hills campaign and the Swiss European Snowboard Trip competition. Swiss will support Nitro team on their trips around the world searching for powder and adventures. In addition, with the Nitro X Swiss European Snowboard Trip competition, two people can win a fabulous trip to Laax for a camp week with the Nitro team, including paid flight to Zurich. The competition was organized in collaboration with Laax and Riders Hotel.

BURTON OPENS INNSBRUCK’S NEW FLAGSHIP STORE Burton has always welcomed his customers into the store inside his European Headquarters in Innsbruck on Haller Straße 111, but in order to enjoy better contact with the riders it has decided to move to the heart of the Tyrolean city, in Anichstraße 13. “We did not just want to open another store, but a further point of contact in the heart of the city that hosts Burton Europe. We will also organize various events both in the store and in the many resorts surrounding the city, to be closer to the customers and to the local snowboard community.” Commented Burton Europe marketing manager in a press conference.

TOMMY GESME IS THE NEWS ADIDAS SNOWBOARDING PRO During the Cold Front Tour in Minneapolis, that featured Beta, Kamikazu and The Future of Yesterday premiers, there was a nice out of program at the end of the screening of House Call Only and Blender, the video project by Adidas starring Tommy Gesme. Alex Sherman, Adidas global team manager, took the stage and introduced a short video message from Louif Paradis, who apologized for not being physically present and complimented Tommy for his entry into the pro team. At that point the Varsity Theater literally exploded, with Gesme on the stage bathed in champagne and embraced by the entire midwest.

LUCAS MAGOON LAUNCHES GOON GEAR The charismatic Vermont rider Lucas Magoon, after a militancy until 2016 with Technine, passed first to D-Day, with whom he had a couple of pro models, and then devoted himself entirely to taking care of his family and his newborn daughter Winter. During this sabbatical year he developed the idea of creating something entirely made by him and his wife Tonya, so Goon Gear was born. The newborn company produces sweatshirts, t-shirts, coach jackets, hats, balaclavas and in extremely limited edition even a model of board in the only 152 size. For more info go to www.goongear.shop

BLUE TOMATO SNOWVENTION 2018 In 2018 Blue Tomato turned 30 (you can read the history of the brand on the Sequence Buyers Guide 2019) and to celebrate has realized a series of interesting initiatives as limited edition release of products of the best snowboard brands “blue tomato” customized, a series of special initiatives on the site for every thirtieth day of the month and in the end the first ever Snowvention, with the historic Ottakringer brewery in the center of Vienna full of pros for the Jib City Jam promoted by Vans, in addition to many curious people and various stands of the best brands of the sector, for a weekend of fun, shopping and snowboarding.

DILLON OJO LIFELINE FOUNDATION Canadian rider Dillon Ojo, from team Ride, was already an icon of snowboarding despite his young age. His ability to find spots where others couldn’t, placed him in the Olympians of street riders: this is witnessed by his memorable video parts in Foreword, Deja Vu’s Encore, Bangarang and Landline. Dillon passed away on June 29th of this year in a tragic accident and friends and relatives started a non-profit foundation named after him. The Dillon Ojo Lifeline Foundation helps less fortunate young people to undertake sports programs such as summer camps and other activities that otherwise could not afford. INDOOR SURVIVAL

D.O.D.

3.ROJO TASK

The Indoor Survival is one of the most popular Capita boards and has won several Transworld Good Wood Awards. For the 2018/2019 season it went under an important restyling: a Resort Profile with a traditional camber was added to the more tested shape to guarantee an unforgettable experience not only in the park but also in the pipes and on the slopes. The precise and durable Superdrive insole requires low maintenance.

The D.O.D is one of the favorite models from the Rome team but also by testers who want to spend their time equally on powder lines, in fast curves on the slopes and in park rides. Thanks to the 4 elements that make up the Rome bindings (highback, baseplate, heelcup and ankle strap), this binding ensures an excellent balance between flex and pop: flexible enough for grab and tweaks, but capable of excellent response and support on XL kickers.

Rojo is an Australian outerwear brand born in 1987 but almost unknown here in the old world until recently. Fortunately it has also arrived in Europe and today we focus on the Task Jacket, a garment that combines style and functionality in a medium-long cut with 15,000 columns of water impermeability and a 10,000 gm breathability. The faux leather details and the synthetic fur collar make it perfect for both the snow and the city.

SK8 HI MTE

SELECT TLS

Maze is the ideal helmet for those who love a minimal and modern line, but equipped with all the technologies and comforts needed for complete days on the snow in total safety. Clean design integrated into the world’s lightest certified snow helmet. The AirEvac ventilation system has a total of 9 holes for air passage, while the Mips system ensures maximum impact protection, even from the most violent ones.

Revisiting the iconic Vans sneaker, the MTE Sk8-Hi MTE is a high-profile model, with upper treated with Scotchgard, warm lining and MTE 360, a new concept with thermal retention, which keeps the heat inside and the cold outside, ensuring warmth and comfort all day long. The sole offers maximum grip and the reinforced toe withstands the wear and tear of time.

This Nitro boot, designed and created for mountain professionals, has been improved for this season, becoming more comfortable, reactive and resistant than the previous years. The new Vibram Icetrek sole with shock and vibration absorption system D3O guarantees grip, abrasion resistance and incredible comfort. The Armored Spine and the Flex Link design guarantee a natural flex of the boots and maximum comfort.

CUSTOM

MULTIENTRY SPLIT

9.HORSEFEATHERS RAVEN BY EIKI HELGASON

Its name is now synonymous with all mountain, because this iconic model of the Burlington company really performs on all terrains. The directional shape that has always distinguished the custom, combined with the traditional camber, make it a suitable board for the backcountry, as well as for the park or pipe, rather than for carving on the slopes. The custom remains a separate category, able to compete with other specialist boards, and be a winner.

FT Split is the new model of the historic Austrian binding company dedicated to splitboarding. Multientry is the new SP solution that combines the benefits of Fastec technology (the removal of the highback to wear the boot without opening the straps), with the possibility of using the binding in a classic way. It is equipped with an accessory crampon - that can be ordered separately - to facilitate ascents.

Raven is the jacket designed and worn by Horsefeathers pro Eiki Helgason. Technically speaking, it has an essential regular cut and offers excellent 10,000 mm resistance to water with a high 10,000 gm breathability. Made with the exclusive Ultratech fabric designed by Horsefeathers, its look can be deceiving because it hides an impressive series of technical features under a line of workwear inspiration.

With some out of the ordinary capabilities, a passion for unusual spots and a rare work ethic, Dan Brisse is one of the most progressive riders in modern snowboarding. To accomplish his adventures, Deeluxe created the BrisseID, perfect for the street as well as for the backcountry. Equipped with the best Deeluxe technologies such as L3 Lacing system and TPS Shield, it is a boot for all terrains and situations that Dan faces.

Red Bull Spect is a goggles line made by Spect in collaboration with Red Bull, which presents exclusive features and technical solutions: this Magnetron EON has a cylindrical lens for a wide field of vision. The fast magnetic lens change system makes replacement fast and safe. The package includes 2 lenses, one for good weather and one for poor visibility conditions.

The Hydrastash Reservoir Insulated presents an exclusive 0.75 liter water bag placed at the center of gravity and inside has a special spot along the powder skirt to which it is fixed, leaving you with all the freedom of movement. The jacket is made of InfiDry fabric 20K with taped seams and YKK AquaGuard water resistant zip, features that make it an excellent barrier against the elements.

1.DC HR X HOUSE OF POWDER

2.LIB TECH STUMP APE X BLUE TOMATO

3.UNION X POW

The new HR was born in collab with The House Of Powder and it was designed for pure freeriding. The integrated technology on this board is specific for slopes of immaculate fresh snow: the accentuated taper, the generous nose and the exclusive S-Camber that has a positive bridge between the bindings and a flat on the front to increase the floatation.

For its 30th anniversary Blue Tomato has realized a series of exclusive collaborations including this one with Lib Technologies, that became the Stump Ape. The board presents a totally redesigned graphics representing a series of terrifying blue creatures that invade the top and the insole of the agile freeride all mountain board of the Mervin house.

Protect Our Winters is an organization created with the aim of sensitizing and mobilizing the sports community in favor of climate protection. From a technical point of view, the Union X Pow binding features a Stage IV base in Duraflex ST, with minimal contact points, thermoformed EVA multi-density inserts, 3D extruded aluminum heel and Team spoiler.

Stinky Socks has realized many collabs with a lot of brands and crews in the last seasons: among these it created this one with the glasses and goggles American company Ashbury. Technically the sock is made of Extra Stretch fabric for maximum stability, with Aegis antibacterial treatment and Cool cotton maX anti-sweat system.

The Message is a powerful freestyle board by the French brand Stone, winner for two season in a row of the Top of the Pop prize by the French magazine SnowSurf; in the 2019 season it joined forces with the famous Japanese artist Kentaro Yoshida. Kentaro is an eclectic artist who has collaborated with legendary bands such as the Pixies and with many brands like Billabong and Santa Cruz.

The Canadian bindings brand Now, which revolutionized the way to build bindings thanks to the floating pad SkateTech, has collaborated with Yes for the 2019 season and realized a perfect all mountain binding for the company team of JP Solber, DCP and Romain de Marchi, who like to face all the terrains - backcountry in particular - without having to change their setup.

The Mountain Surfer is the new Jones powdersurf designed by Jeremy and by surf shaper Chris Christenson. The shape has been totally redesigned for 2019, using new materials in addition to the 3D contour that features hydrodynamics principles coming from surfboards. In the end, the profile includes the Spoon nose for optimal floatation, a central depression to improve conduction and sliding and 3D stepped edges for curve accuracy.

Burton is back with a new collab with the legendary workwear company that later became a streetwear icon. The new collection includes different garments including this Wakeby Parka made of Dryride 3-Layer Twill Fabric fabric that recalls a work garment in design, color and detail, but incorporates all the necessary technologies and technical details of a snowboard jacket for all terrains, from powder to slopes.

11.OAKLEY SHELL PO ANORAK X JEFF STAMPLE

12.NITRO TEAM EXPOSURE X WINGS FOR LIFE

The Helgason brothers brand is proud to collaborate with Danny Larsen, ex pro snowboarder, now esteemed artist and defined by them as “the real last Viking”. Danny, with his style that goes back to the Scandinavian tradition, has portrayed the Halldor van in a rather curious mountain scenery. Technically speaking, the board is an all mountain freestyle that uses 3BT freestyle and carbon strings for greater responsiveness.

For the 2019 winter, Oakley has realized a capsule collection in collab with the famous designer Jeff Staple. The collection features several technical garments, including gloves, glasses, bags and this Shell Po Anorak, which underneath a very eclectic appearance hides very respectable technical characteristics such as a 10,000 mm waterproofing, functional pockets for any items and taped seams.

After last year’s collab with the photographer Lorenz Holder, for the 2019 season Nitro Snowboards wanted to repeat the experience with the Red Bull and Wing For Life photographers, a foundation that finances the research on the spinal cord. The collaboration resulted in the Team Exposure board, on which Nitro wanted a picture that best represented what it really cares about in nature: snow.

This board is part of the Salomon Hillside side project and was designed by the 4 hands of the living legends of snowboard Wolfgang Nyvelt and Takaharu Nakai. The directional shape with an important taper and powder camber profile make it perfect for the powder both on open fields but also in the narrow of the woods because it is extremely fast and reactive in the edge change, according to the style of the two pros who designed it.

PROJECT TRUMPMORE Project Trumpmore comes from the controversial positions on climate change pursued by the White House and Trump’s desire to see his face sculpted on Mount Rushmore. A mix of provocation, scientific experiment and artwork, the idea of the Finnish environmental group Melting Ice is to sculpt the profile of the president on an iceberg and to install a camera that will document his destiny, in order to remind a fundamental point of view about global warming.

ALBERTO MAFFEI TXT; DENIS PICCOLO PIC: ROBY BRAGOTTO

Hi Alberto, you’ve recently become part of the Burton team. This year I took this big step entering in the Burton Snowboards crew. I don’t like talking about reasons or big differences compared to before. I just think that I had this great opportunity and it was perfect at this time of my career for what I wanted to be and for what I would like to do next.

could collaborate about that too in order to create something fun. For now it’s going very well and I hope you’ll like our idea. So are you going to spend more time on contests or shootings? I think my future is still linked to contests, at least for the next few years, but I would like to find some time to approach the world of shooting because I like it a lot and I still have a lot to learn, also the feelings are incredible!

You’ve also become a member of the air force, which is a well suited category for you because of your passion for flying high. A beautiful satisfaction. Joining the Aeronautica Militare sports group was another great satisfaction. It’s wonderful for me to be part of an organization that believes so much in high-level sport.

What kind of technical gear did you choose for yourself ? Embracing Burton I found a new world where to choose my set up from. Regarding the board, after some tests, I chose the Burton Free Thinker, a board designed by the boss Danny Davis himself and I’m getting along very well with it. The thing I liked the most are the bindings, I will use the Burton Malavita and I do not think I’ll change them any more in the future! My boot instead could only be the Burton Ion. Then I will use my inevitable Oakley goggles, and even for this year I chose the Line Miner model, my favorite.

Any projects for the upcoming season? For this season I have many ideas on my mind. First of all, I have a couple of tricks that I want to work on and try to complete, but I won’t spoil you more because I want it to be a surprise! I would like to film more especially in fresh powder, I hope I will have the chance to do that. But my main goals are still set in the world of competitions where I want to try to reach the top positions.

Did you try the step-on? Yes I tried them and I think they are cool, obviously I would not trust to use them for a jump from 30 meters, but I think it is a real revolution for people who want to enjoy a simple day on the snow, a ride in powder or two easy jumps in the park. In short, for those who want to enjoy the mountain at 360 °.

You’re often with Roby Bragotto, what are you two up to? It’s simple, Roby will follow me in many rides this season and will do what he does best, taking some nice pictures. Also since last season I fell in love with the idea that he had about vlogging on youtube I asked him if we 26

the occasion. The European crew led by the marketing manager Philipp Kämmerer gave support and shared with us incredible moments of riding and relax.

The place has been invaded by riders and filming crews from all over Europe, ready to exploit the incredible snow conditions and the vastness of the rideable terrains. For these reasons and many more, the American brand Rome has decided to organize exactly here its usual meeting called “Rome Lodge”. One of the most important reason is certainly the presence on the place of the “Weal Chalet”, home of Rome Snowboards Italian distributor, Friendistribution.

The Lodge was located in the middle of the woods, just outside the village but reachable riding on the board from the resort, and its living room has been the stage of amazing dinners full of Piedmont’s specialties, tasting of local wines and Genepie, and lots of talk in front of the fireplace.

Rome Lodge is not only a sales meeting and it’s much more than a press trip: it’s a full month of product testing, meeting moments with operators, riders and media, and lots of fun immersed in powder. Paul Maravetz and Josh Reid, Rome SDS founders, have been available for customers, media and riders throughout the entire month at the incredible and luxurious chalet that they rented for

To test and try the many news of the brand an entire room inside the Chalet has been set up with all the boards, bindings and boots of the 2019 collection. Exactly in that room, every evening all the news were explained in detail by the Rome crew. In the morning instead, once reached the lifts, we had a whole demo room, full of 28

Rome SDS loves Europe and not just because it took its name from the ancient capital city of the Roman Empire. For years now they have been supporting the European scene and they love to stay in touch with riders, media and operators of the old continent. During the media session where we, together with all the major European newspapers, had been invited, the French Rome SDS pro Thomas Delfino joined us to show us his incredible qualities as a backcountry rider and, in front of some beer, told us some secret of the sessions that he had just finished.

Rome Snowboards gear, prepared and ready to be tested. We must admit that we’ve been amazed by the quality of the Rome boards, bindings and boots, which will surely satisfy the greatest variety of riders, from park rats to pure freeriders, passing through the hard pack and turns lovers .

Thanks to the expert guide of Luca Angelucci, owner of Friendistribution, and Luca Fiorini we have been able to enjoy every single secret corner of the resort, spoiling ourselves with memorable powder descents. 30

Snowboarding is changing, from jibbing to park riding till freeriding, an increasingly present and predominant discipline. The idea of going off the track, getting out of the usual paths and letting yourself face something bigger than you, attracts neophytes every day. Practicing freeride becomes like a drug: you can not stay without it anymore. But you have to do it in the right way and adopting the appropriate equipment, attending specific courses to learn its proper use. It is certainly not enough just to have that equipment without knowing how to use it. The Swiss premium outdoor brand Mammut, which has always been sensitive and attentive when it comes to safety in the mountains, offers the new BarryHeart 3.0 firmware update. Thanks to this update, the transceiver will have better performance and better signal analysis accuracy. Developed and produced in Switzerland, it will allow for the first time the sharing of new device-to-device functions. Barryvox devices can therefore be updated regardless of access to the network or from the point of service. Let’s focus on 32

2. CARBON PROBE 240 FAST LOCK With a total length of 240 cm, the Carbon Probe 240 Fast Lock is ideal for both ambitious freeriders and alpine guides. Its parts are made of high quality carbon to achieve a reduction in weight and the Fast Lock system, which is individually adjustable with a tensioning cable, can be easily used even when wearing gloves. On the last part and on the handle you can find the “Safety Orange”, for greater assistance in operation and better visibility.

lanche, Mammut has revised its range of safety devices, taking into consideration the importance of visual signals. Psychological tests have shown that the bright color “Safety Orange” makes it easier to locate the buttons on the Barryvox and the colors clearly divided on the probes help rescuers to identify the depth indicators of the snow. 1. ALUGATOR PRO LIGHT A modern avalanche shovel must be as light and compact as possible and 100% reliable in case of an emergency. All Mammut shovels are certified according to the new UIAA standard 156 (avalanche rescue shovels certification). Despite its large blade, the new Alugator Pro Light avalanche shovel weighs only 650g and has an intelligent design that saves space. The hardened and anodized blade is extremely stable, with a sharp edge and a symmetrical T-handle to allow a quick and effective excavation even in the harshest snow. The oval and telescopic handle presents the “Safety Orange” color, increasing its visibility and facilitating its assembly.

3. MAMMUT FLIP AIRBAG RIMOVIBILE 3.0 Mammut presents the new Flip Removable 3.0 airbag backpack. Extremely lightweight, weighing less than 2 kg, it has been developed using automotive manufacturing technologies. You can easily carry skis, snowboards and splitboards, and is equipped with a daisy chain for additional gears and locking systems for poles or ice axes. You can find the special “Safety Orange” color in the airbag, to make the search for partially buried people faster and easier. 33

ATRIP LINE BY HALLDOR HELGASON TXT: MATTEO ROSSATO

ATRIP LINE TECHOLOGIES Despite the basic skate-inspired designs, Atrip Line is built with the best fabrics and techologies available on the market. Primaloft insulation featured in the Hornet Jacket is the ultimate hi-tech alternative to down insulation. Unlike traditional down insulation, which gets weighed down losing a lot of performance when wet, Primaloft is made of air up to the 96% and it retains its insulating properties when saturated, as well as being more resistant to abrasion. The DWR, Durable Water Repellent, coating is a special water repellent treatment featured in all the outerwear pieces and in the Hornet Jacket, and it avoids water to penetrate the outermost layer. When melting, snow cannot penetrate the outer surface of the fabric and saturate inner layers, so the breathability remains high, weight stays low and performance is not compromised. Atrip Line features only YKK Zippers, which are synonymous of quality and reliability. These extremely durable, easy to use, high quality zippers are currently the global leader

It was 2015 when Horsefeathers started working with Halldor Helgason on a new outerwear brand: Atrip balanced Halldor style with the trademark Horsefeathers quality, featuring minimal designs and a correct fit that immediately drew huge attention from the global snowboard community. After two successful seasons of unstoppable growth, Atrip had the need of further manpower, investments and time: time is the most valuable thing these days, and everybody wants to spend more time in the mountains rather than sitting in the office. Therefore, after some focused meetings and even more brainstorming sessions with Halldor, Atrip has been merged into Horsefeather. That’s the way Atrip Line has come to life, taking advantage of the broader distribution of the mother brand and having Halldor becoming part of the Horsefeathers Global Team along with his older brother Eiki, yet still representing his Atrip Line signature collection. 34

SNOWBOARDS & POWDERSURFS

POWDER WITH PEOPLE ON PURPOSE Konvoi boards ride a bit different and have a character of their own. And this is a must, because who wants more of the same boards: but the main point is that they truly offer a superb ride.

TXT: MATTEO ROSSATO PICS: BEN DIETERMANN & MARTIN GROBAR

Three adjectives that well define Ben Dietermann could be humble, professional and passionate, in this precise order. In the bio on the Konvoi website he describes himself as a human being giving full attention to his utter love for the art of gliding down some snow-covered mountains standing sideways. And explains that the name of the brand is a straightforward tribute to the collective verve behind this fascinating thing called snowboarding and everything that happens around it. And an invitation to join in on this ride. Being a motivated rider for more than 25 years he started his first builds mostly out of curiosity, but soon discovered that there was still plenty of potential left to create snow gliding devices that offer an extra portion of Fahrvergnügen and also last longer. After lending his motivation, talents and ideas to the snowboard manufacturer Pogo for some years, he founded his own brand and now designs, builds and sells snowboards, splitboards and powdersurf boards under the Konvoi name. His contagious smile and deep passion for what he does oozes from all his speeches. “I decided to not limit the possible access by a high price” is another statment of his. This commitment to serve great products at a fair price is admirable and goes straight against the latest trends that worship exclusive products.

and also not just manufacturing by himself - but also choosing a manufacture - is part of this all, as it really makes it possible for everyone being able to afford such a board. And as the boards have been described as natural feel good sticks, you don’t have to be an extraordinary rider to have fun on a Konvoi board, even if they still offer the most for the better riders: a lot of people think those preferences are conflicting, but they are not. Konvoi boards ride a bit different and have a character of their own. And this is a must, because who wants more of the same boards: but the main point is that they truly offer a superb ride. The channels do a great job, but also does the elaborate and innovative pronounced camber meets pronounced rocker profile make quite a difference; the special approach to combine mellow radius entries/exits with tight radiuses. And all backed up by a construction that is finetuned to the very last detail. The ride feels very easy and natural, but you got more control than you ever thought possible. One scenario from testing maybe helps to understand. A group of four riders was testing the boards in some late season rugged conditions in Chamonix and at the bottom, the crew got approached by quite a few other riders which were simply impressed by how they were able to ride that fast and in full control in these conditions and still seemed to just play with whatever their boards were going over. The construction is another story, the wood cores Ben developed are customized for the realistic forces of riding or better say a lot of and hard riding, and that only one supplier is willing to make them maybe helps to paint the picture. And this is not because he’s originally a wood engineer, but simply because it boosts the character and the longevity of the board. Other details are even harder to explain, for example vertical glassfiber stringers backing up a wood stringer that backsup the sidewall, but he – along with his supportive and fierce tester crew - simply made a lot of testing: in the laboratory and on snow. Other things are more profound, better epoxy resins, different epoxy resins for the bonding of different materials combined with longer curing periods. Sounds reasonable, but as it is timeconsuming it’s skipped by most.

His work ethic comes from a perspective of a passionate rider. And when you look at the market, you realize most products are developed and crafted for the occasional rider, meaning most products can’t withstand the wear and tear of passionate riders. Of course professional riders are also passionate riders, but as they have free refill for their gear: the problem of material falling apart is not so drastic for them. And with his profound knowledge about board building and his own brand, he constantly strives to improve that situation as it is possible to create better products, if you are willing to put in some extra effort and money. Hence the name of the brand he definitely wants to share the fruits of his work or better say the sensation of those rides with everyone interested. And the concept of only selling directly 38

As he just moved his workshop closer to the mountains, he had every single board prototype in hands one more time and it’s quite a number of boards, nothing comes from nothing so to say. Especially with 3D shaping it really gets exciting and hard at the same time: he got some prototypes, he just rode one single time and then some he still can’t get enough off and hopefully turns into some future project. Haven’t even touched the powdersurfer topic here yet, but to sum it up he’s just very enthusiastic for those moments on the mountains and he prefers to ride and offer equipment that simply helps to make the most out of these moments. And he definitely doesn’t stop before accomplishing the original vision of a board or shape, and in case of powdersurfers he also don’t stop when it comes to everything besides the boards: pads, leash etc, all those things deserve attention as well, or you’ll just screw the whole potential of the board.

And he’s willing to go the extra mile, for example just a little time ago, he was at the ptex factory to help them improve their quality. Definitely not a job, he has to do, but as he want to optimize the production full circle and reach the best possible outcome it only makes sense. Not mentioning a greener philosophy all that much here as he simply prefers a sustainable by design approach. Meaning the longer a board lasts the less impact you get, or simply reduce the harm by elimating. Of course you can print your base with a greener paint, but you can also just don’t print it. It is easy to read between the lines that he built up one hell of a workshop to be able to do all those kind of developments, he refrains from mentioning it directly, because Ben is humble, professional and passionate in this precise order. When he’s not in his workshop he’s most likely out for a ride, but anyhwere he is, he’s looking forward to meet you. 39

BLUE TOMATO

YOUR RIDE. OUR MISSION. They strive to make their customers‘ ride the best it can be, whether it’s powder turning, park jumping, jibbing, or good old carving. BY EDITORIAL STAFF

Blue Tomato has been founded by Gerfried Schuller, a former pro snowboarder. He put all his passion and knowledge to serve snowboarders in Austria first, in the rest of Europe later. That’s the way Blue Tomato works since 1988: they strive to make their customers‘ ride the best it can be, whether it’s powder turning, park jumping, jibbing, or good old carving. And you know how they know which board fits at best your needs? They ride. A lot. From buying department to customer finances, from regional manager to product data management, marketing or their directors – your ride is not only their mission, but also their own experience, motivation, passion, and most of all: their people. The Blue Tomato employees are not getting their knowledge from catalogues and product descriptions only, they really test the gear themselves, while having tons of fun doing that! In order to give a proof of that, they let their people be the protagonists of the Blue Tomato video campaign: no pros or fancy camera equipment, just their employees, We met Alex – a Blue Tomato buyer - last year at Hintertux and together with him we tested the best carving boards; then we met him again at snowboard 1st Try looking around for new brands to in-

troduce and testing the new materials. So we thought the best proof of Blue Tomato commitment for your ride was to let him speak and share his stoke for his job and snowboarding. Hi Alex, please briefly introduce yourself. Hi, I am Alex, born in Salzburg in 1995. I’ve been snowboarding since 2005, and I am still stoked. Snowboarding is everything for me and definitely shaped my life and still gives me a direction. I’ve been working with Manuel as one of the hardgoods buyers since summer 2016. We are responsable for snowboarding, skateboarding, touring, goggles and protections. How do you accomplish your mission? I am a junior buyer, so I have a lot of responsabilities, as the selection of brands and models depends on my decisions, too. I use all my knowledge, and my past experiences influence my decisions. We are always looking for new brands: if we find something cool for our customers, we try to get them: even if it is a small brand from the US. So this is why “your ride. our mission” fits 100 %. Because we do our best for your ride. 40

QPARKS

THE EVANGELISTS OF FREESTYLE BY SILVIA GALLIANI

When it comes to freestyle in the Alps, there are few companies that shaped the scene, and on top of all of them there’s QParks. If your snowboarding concept is made of kickers, rails and wallrides, and you come from Central European countries, you’ve probably already shredded one of their creations. Today we are focusing on Young Mountain Marketing and their major brand, QParks. The company name Young Mountain Marketing itself might not sound so familiar, but you’ve probably spent hours in the playgrounds they’ve built over the years. With 15 years of shaping and about 40 parks all over the Alps in Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and France, they’re the biggest company in Europe in park designing, building, marketing and a lot more! All mentioned above is already impressive, but the story behind this market leader is way more astounding.

jumps on the hills surrounding their home town in eastern Austria. They were armed with cassette players blasting punk rock, shovels, a camcorder and thermos bottles filled with boozy tea.

15 Years for Freestyle: a camcorder, shovels and boozy tea. Once upon a time, during a legendary winter of the 90s, a crew of four snowboard fanatics spent every free minute shoveling and building

“In the winter of 94/95, we checked out every single potential spot around our home turf in Austria, looking for places to set up kickers. Instead of going to school we tried building jumps in different shapes and sizes” Andi remembers their beginnings. “We filmed each other and analyzed our style during long sessions in my mother’s attic” Andi indulges in blurry reminiscences. At that time, Jan, Jürgen, Paul and Andi had no clue that these would be the most crucial moments that were going to shape their own future and parts of the Alps: they were the four evangelists of Freestyle who started QParks.

four evangelists gained the trust of some adventuresome supporters in the right positions in Sölden and at the Dachstein first, and the QParks crew started to operate. Their parks suddenly became a real attraction and a thriving freestyle scene started to grow around them. Year after year, their project constantly grew and today 40 QParks in 5 countries all over the Alps are sculpted into the mountains by the young Mountain Shape Academy, the QParks shaper school.

insane snowboarders. If you wanted to practice, the only way was to grab a shovel and dig for hours. “Freestyle has given us so many incredible moments. And it was our idea to make this feeling accessible to a lot more people” Jürgen explains. The road to success turned out to be harder than expected, as Jürgen puts it: “In hindsight it’s actually funny but we were basically evangelists of freestyle. We were convinced that winter sports needed our idea. We went from ski resort to ski resort and tried to spread our message.” Their presentations couldn’t have been more freestyle too: “At the very beginning, we had to sleep in the car or outside the night before an appointment, there was just no money for accommodation” Jan states when thinking about their first presentations.

From Pleasure Jam to Girls Shred Session and QParks Tour: Crew sessions belong to freestyle, that’s why QParks started to organize several events, parties and shred sessions in most of their parks. Whether it was on Dachstein or Diedamskopf, the QParks events gained quite a great reputation. For a long time, the legendary Pleasure Jam has been one of the most important freestyle contest in Austria and gave rise to stars like Elias Elhardt and Anna Gasser. All of these events aimed at strengthening and connecting the freestyle-community and served as the foundation for the QParks Tour

Austria back then was extremely bound to alpine skiing, and the most of the resorts were not so keen to let four boys build “hazardous jumps” for snowboarders on their mountains. However, somehow the 45

dition of the special obstacles was maintained and the construction of the Moby Dick kicker definitely became a highlight. Not only big specials and pros belonged to the snow park though: countless events for the local scene and youngsters became part of the last decade at Snowpark Alta Badia. Apart from famous contests like La Freestyla, the legendary QParks Tour Stop, or coaching sessions like the VIP Pro Coaching or the Girls Shred Sessions, riders could always expect something new. Creative specials will be a fixed part of the winter 2018/19, just like it was in the beginning, but this time riders were asked to choose their favorite design in an online poll on the park’s Facebook page. All girls can look forward to another highlight on March 2nd 2019, the Girls Shred Session will take place at the Snowpark Alta Badia. Further informations, memories, pictures and videos can be found on Alta Badia snowpark Facebook and Instagram Page, as well as on their website.

and Girls Shred Sessions. Nowadays, the QParks Tour consists of 9 stages in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland and brings together international rookies. They come from different mountains, shred together, make new friends and enjoy new resorts and parks. By now, the contest series has quite a famous name among the international newcomer’s scene cause it has supported young riders like Clemens Millauer, Patrick Cinca and Lisi Gram. At some point, QParks felt that the freestyle scene was still way too male dominated and that the female riders were unjustifiably underrepresented. That’s why they started the Girls Shred Sessions event series, where young ladies could enjoy a free public coaching, shred together in the park, meet new shred-sistas and get tips from female coaches and role models. All events, projects and activities that QParks constantly brings to life are led by the desire to get as many people as possible into freestyle. They pursue their goal by supporting the community and building snowparks that aren’t solely made for pros, but for everyone. QParks always follows the concept that it’s not all about size but about quality.

Schöneben Snowpark: In the last season, Schöneben Snowpark shone for its creativity and size. And for the 2019 winter another important aspect will be improved: lifestyle. For real park rats freestyle is more than just a sport. During the season, the park becomes their second home and to make it as cozy as possible, they will get a new chill area. In addition to kickers, rails and boxes, loungers and heavy beats are now an essential part of the creative playground. But parts of the setup have changed as well: this season three more hits will be added to the park setup. Of course, they will be integrated into the snowpark by the shape crew according to the highest quality standards. This winter as usual, the snowpark sits under the Zehnerkopf and can be reached via the Fraitensesselbahn and the Jochbahn. But starting from this season however, shredders can reach the park also from the Haideralm. After the merger in summer 2018, Schöneben and Haideralm are directly linked thanks to the new Höllental slope and the 10-seater St. Valentin gondola. That’s an upgrade to 60 kilometers of slopes and 10 lifts. However, the most creative snowpark could already be found on the Reschenpass anyways. Even though every day can be special at Schöneben, the events in the 2019 season will add some spice to the mix: Battle ROJal, on February 9th 2019 will see shredders compete for the freestyle crown, the contest has been an essential part of the QParks Tour for years and marks the peak of the winter season. If you are down for creative jibs, chilling and BBQ sessions, then the Shred Poker Schöneben is the right venue for you. You can earn massive cash and win awesome goodies by nailing your stylish tricks on March 16th 2019. Whatever you’re looking for, the Snowpark Schöneben have something good for everyone. Stay tuned on the facebook and Instagram pages and on Snowpark Schöneben website, the crew will provide build-up reports and give all the curious riders a sneak peek behind the scenes.

Freestyle for everybody: from pro parks to Funslopes. Over the years, the idea of offering exciting freestyle possibilities to skiers and snowboarders on the mountain grew further and went beyond the classic snowpark concept. The results are called Funslopes and Funcross and are thought for every single ski or snowboard guest who would like to have fun and that may not be ready for park-shredding. A mix of banked turns, waves, small jumps, dance floors and other features that attract old and young people and serve as an introduction to the freestyle world. All these courses are built and maintained by the Shape Academy.

Best practice examples: Alta Badia and Schöneben. QParks is also present in Italy with two major park projects, carefully designed and groomed following the QParks philosophy. Alta Badia Snowpark: In 2019 will turn 10: in 2009, the Skicarosello Alta Badia and QParks started their collaboration with the idea to create a snowpark which would suit the mighty backdrop of the surrounding Dolomites while offering a great playground to freestylers. Ten years ago the first setup was built next to the Ciampai slope, laying the foundations for one of the best and biggest snow park in the Dolomites. Starting from easy and medium features and a colorful jib mix, the area was expanded and the lines were defined according to different skill levels. Already in its first season, the park drew attention with the first special obstacle: a 20m gap kicker was built and Canadian snowboard legend Marc-André Tarte came from North America to master this beast. ZERMATT SNOWPARK HAPPY SUMMER ISLAND TXT & PICS: DENIS PICCOLO

Where exactly is Zermatt? Located in the Swiss canton of Valais, it is also known as the Pearl of the Swiss Alps due to the panorama that you can already enjoyed from the center of the village. The Matterhorn dominates the view with its unmistakable shape and the majesty of its almost 4500 meters of altitude. The ski resorts are on the Plateu Rosà, at the foot of the Matterhorn peak and can be reached either from Zermatt, or from the Italian side, with the Cervinia facilities. Some of our riders had never been to Zermatt before and were stunned by the snow conditions and the snowpark status, considering that all the other glaciers had already closed their doors at least 10 days before. In that place, however, everything still looked like as if we were at the beginning of summer. The setup was perfect, with jibs, jumps and creative structures of all sizes and shapes; the atmosphere at the Shred Bar - at the bottom of the park and next to the ski lift that brings you to the top - was relaxed and it was possible to enjoy hot drinks, a beer, or simply relax on a deck between every lap with no need get off of your board.

In Europe there is a resort that never closes and keeps a snowpark open throughout the summer until October: its name is Zermatt. At the end of August, the Zermatt park crew invited us for a 3-day session on this crazy glacier. Among people from New Zealand and others on vacation, we went up with a mixed crew of Italian and Swiss riders to enjoy the last days of this hot summer that just got to an end. The group was made by the locals Leo Framarin and Francesco Traverso, Alberto Planchon, Matteo Falcone, Nicola Ganz and the Austrian and German guests Fabian Fraidl, Oskar Fritzsche and Christian Kirsch. Francesco “Zoppo” Zoppei and I were armed with cameras to film and a drone, that at these altitudes just do not want to work. Matteo Rossato instead coordinated the whole crew, perfectly organizing everything. The riders were motivated but we were incredulous to meet these conditions, everything was perfect for the shooting. 48

In Europe there is a resort that never closes and keeps a snowpark open throughout the summer until October: its name is Zermatt. The riders were motivated but we were incredulous to meet these conditions, everything was perfect for the shooting.

Year after year Zermatt is gaining attention from the European scene and will soon become one of the reference point for summer riding. Our crew took advantage of all the time possible to have fun on the many structures of the park, stopping only when the lifts stopped bringing them to the top. If you are looking for a place to relax, surf the best summer snow in Europe, eat great food and enjoy a unique view, Zermatt is the place for you. We will come back for sure!

The resort on the glacier closes at 2pm, while the snow park opens its doors at 10am, opening earlier would not have any sense because, believe it or not, the snow is still frozen and facing the structures would be too reckless. Snowboarders from all over Europe, pro, amateurs or weekend warriors, meet side by side on the lifts or exchange opinions at the Shred Bar, all with smiling faces because the park is a real Disneyland for riders and finding these conditions in the summer is really amazing. 50

It started out as a summer project by a Kiwi lost in transition while traveling through Europe with his crew of buddies, Rusty Toothbrush gained huge attention during the years and now can count on a huge crowd of loyal fans, thanks to its perfect balance of team spirit, fun and real snowboarding.

Hi Alex, it’s been a great winter and you guys travelled a lot to film “Poveri Noi”: tell us something about the places and spots you rode along the way. Hey Denis, yeah it was a pretty big winter for us. We tried our best to balance the amount of time we spent in both the street and backcountry this year. We spent some time in Czech Republic and Poland filming street in January, then in February we came back to the French Alps to film mostly backcountry footage. Then during the off season we went down to Australia to try get the last few clips for the movie. Ok, let’s rewind the tape. Introduce yourself for those who don’t know Peppino Stewart yet. My name is Alex Stewart or Peppino, whichever you prefer. I am a 27 year old professional snowboarder from New Zealand but now I consider myself an honorary Italian. This will be my 6th winter here in Europe and I’ve definitively developed a soft spot for the passion and drama that comes along with dealing with Italians. I think that’s why I have stuck around for so long. Let’s talk about the name of the movie: how did “Poveri Noi” 57

come out? Well actually Brad and I (RTB filmer) decided to call the movie “Poveri Noi” because for us it kind of explains the irony of the Italian culture in two words. Italy is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places on earth but I think Italians feel like the world is against them. Just like we would joke about the world being against us when we were trying to film this movie. We used to say “Poveri Noi” because it was icy and cold as shit but we were still coherent in knowing how lucky we were to be out in the street or backcountry filming snowboarding with our friends. I see that as kind of ironic. Bails are always a must in the Rusty Toothbrush movies: which was your worst one? I was actually pretty fortunate this year with just a few bumps and bruises but nothing too serious. Perhaps the worst one was splitting my head open in Poland. It was a bit of a mess because our van had broken down that day and we were actually getting around to all the spots using a taxi. It was 1am in the morning when it happened so we just went to the nearby petrol station bathroom, wrapped my head in paper towels then called the taxi to come get us. The next morning we called

another taxi to take the boys to a new spot. After the driver dropped them off I asked him to take me to the hospital to get stitches. I didn’t have a health insurance so I just paid cash. And which was your biggest accomplishment when filming the movie? The most satisfying trick would have been the boardslide to big-spin in Czech Republic. It had been haunting me for 2 years since the first time I tried it back in 2016 at the DC chalet in France, but after a massive two day battle I never actually landed it. However this year when we were out in Czech Republic filming for “Poveri Noi” I explained to Dusan Kriz (a Czech local) the trick I was trying to land and asked if he knew of any double rail spots in his hometown. He remembered this little fitness/playground type zone near his house and we went there to check it out. I battled this little “triceps dip spot” for about 6 hours and after 158 tries I finally put it down. Rider, part-time filmer, producer and mastermind of Rusty Toothbrush: which part takes the most out of Peppino? I think I will always feel first and foremost a rider. I missed the gol-

den era of snowboarding by one generation so in order for me to become a professional I needed to be pretty cunning. Rusty Toothbrush was born out of the need to have a platform where I could show my art. But in order for Rusty Toothbrush to work I needed to learn to edit and film and to convince people to give me money to buy the gear and make videos so, in the end. I needed to become a business man. Compared to the previous movies, “Poveri Noi” features a lot more of backcountry, leaving behind street: chance, purpose or what? I think I suck at riding powder. Tyler and Dusan are the real senders in backcountry and because our all people in our crew have a super varied skillset, I always try to organize our trips in a way that each rider has the opportunity to show his real talent in the environment he likes the best. Same goes for riders in street and the types of spots they like to hit. We try to give everybody the opportunity to pick the spots, zones and even the countries to visit. I consider myself as more of a street rider specialized in either big or alternative spot and that does alternative tricks, instead of a rider who does technical tricks on more traditional spots such as handrails. 58

“Poveri Noi” is its fourth full length movie but it’s probably one of the biggest challenge so far of one of the most eclectic crew of worldwide shredders lead by two crazy New Zealanders. Take a look at what the mastermind and do-it-all dude Alex “Peppino” Stewart has to say about travelling around the globe, being affected by the Italian drama disease and much more!

59

Brad, Troy and I took the joint decision to invest our own money to fund filming for another 4 months. For that reason we have made our movie for paid download in order to get back some of that investment. Our movie is 50 minutes long and we all bled for this damn thing! It is worth the 5₏ you’ll spend, we promise!

60

Rusty Toothbrush is more a family than a classic crew. Could you briefly introduce us each of the current member of the “Poveri Noi” lineup? Yeah Rusty Toothbrush is a mega family but I don’t think you have enough pages for me to write a mini bio on everyone so I’ll just write about the main crew that filmed for “Poveri Noi”. Tyler Chorlton, is our crew daddy! He has filmed for Pirate Movie Production for many years so he brings a knowledge and a level to the crew that is untouchable. Davide Boggio, Little Boggio, is a sponge. You can actually see him improving every single day he rides, the rate in which his skill grows on a snowboard I have not seen in anyone. Dusan Kriz, I’ve known him for less than a year but I feel like I have known him for a lifetime! He is absolutely a freaking animal and attacks every spot and every party with the same energy. Troy Sturroch is a true Aussie legend! Absolute hustler on the board, reliable as a fiat 500 and the most popular ginger haired man I have ever seen with the ladies! Valerian Ducourtil is the nicest French guy you will ever meet! And also one of the best backcountry rider in Europe! The Simpson Brothers, Joe and Jake, are everything that is right with snowboarding. These two brothers from Wales are the most 61

excitable individuals you will ever meet! Troy Tanner & Brad Smith are my two best friends since we were 10 years old, we grew up together in Tauranga, New Zealand. Troy shoots photos and films second angle for Rusty Toothbrush and Brad films and works on the post production of the videos with me. They are the heart of the machine and the unsung heroes of our crew! Without any of them Rusty Toothbrush would never be the same! Tell people out there why they should download “Poveri Noi” instead of buying a healthy pack of cigs? Our sponsors have been amazing and without them we would never have been able to make this movie. However, we should have stopped filming when our budget ran out at the end of February but Brad, Troy and I took the joint decision to invest our own money to fund filming for another 4 months. For that reason we have made our movie for paid download in order to get back some of that investment. Our movie is 50 minutes long and we all bled for this damn thing! It is worth the 5€ you’ll spend, we promise! Any plans for the incoming winter? That’s a surprise!

Gray truly embodies the DIY philosophy one hundred percent. While being only 27, he already achivied a lot of goals in his career: snowboarder, enterpreneur with United Shapes and also mastermind and filmer of Warp Wave. All his creations features his unique touch and his forward thinking philosphy. Silvano Zeiter, longtime friend and lensmaster got us in touch with him, so here’s a little bit more of Gray Thompson. Hi Gray, it seems like you are quite a world traveller: which was your last trip? And which the most memorable one? I have been very fortunate to travel to some far corners of this planet in search of snow and last year was definitely a highlight. My last big expedition was to Northern Bolivia, into a very remote mountain range for about a month. It was a very powerful, eye-opening and amazing trip full of first descents, long hikes, bad weather and alpacas. We were able to summit and ride our objective peak of 6000 meters and come home in one piece. I have such fond memories of most trips but I would say that our time in the Indian Himalaya this past year was very memorable. Very little snowboarding went down but to be immersed in the various cultures of India was something I have learned a lot from and will hold strong memories of for a long time. You’ve just earned the Sequence Mag cover. How did you ended up in Switzerland and how did you get in touch with Silvano (Zeiter)? First of all, I feel honored to be on the cover of the magazine! Switzerland feels almost like a second home to me now, I absolutely love the country, mountains, snow and friends there. I’ve been lucky to spend a lot of time around Saas-Fee over the past couple of years riding with Fredi Kalbermatten and working on some projects for Holden Outerwear. Fredi and Silvano are good friends, they have been shooting

together for a while and are from a similar area in Switzerland so I got to know Silvano through Fredi when I was in Switzerland. Silvano also shoots photos for Holden so we grew a relationship through that as well. He is not only one of the most talented photographers I’ve ever worked with but also a world-class, awesome human and a great friend. Which are the main differences between the Swiss Alps and your Sierras? There are so many differences between the two mountain ranges, mainly that the scale of the Swiss Alps blows the Sierra away. Huge, towering peaks, glacier ice, and tram/resort access of the Swiss Alps is not something you find back home in the Sierra. We have amazing technical terrain and playful-surfy terrain here in the Sierra, but you have to access most of it on foot or snowmobile. Also, it is much harder in the Sierra to come down off the mountain and be greeted by a big cheese dinner than in the Alps! You’re quite a unique human being: despite your young age, you started almost from the beginning to shred, build and film. Tell us a bit about your background and your current projects. Since I started snowboarding at the age of 6 I knew I had discovered something special and from that point forward the entire course of my life was directed at snowboarding and being in the mountains. I grew up in the middle of the City in San Francisco and always felt out of place, but I was surrounded by such a rich and diverse culture, art and design. I guess I took a lot of inspiration from the city mentality of motivation and creation and have embedded that into my approach to snowboarding. Having an open mind to everything has kept me on my toes, learning new things, progressing, and refining. Learning new skills, creating and contributing to snowboarding whether that is through film and photography, riding, or creating brands. Currently I am grooving on exploratory snowboarding exploits, video projects, and running our snowboard brand United Shapes. Warp Wave was a breath of fresh air: are you planning any sequel to Aurora Boardealis? Warp Wave has been a great learning experience for me. It was the first time Eric Messier and I had really created something with our own vision and ideas within snowboarding and shared it with the world. We are still blown away by how well people around the world responded to the project, and we feel honored to have contributed in a way that seems to have helped pushed snowboarding in a positive direction. Snowboarding is ever-evolving, and so are we, so we currently don’t have any plans for Warp Wave, in many ways we feel it has sailed its course for now, but you never know what the future may hold! United Shapes stood at the forefront of the latest snowboard business revolution: how did you come up with this idea and what will be the next step? Much like Warp Wave, United Shapes came into snowboarding during an important time and I think it helped steer things in a cool direction for snowboard business. The brand is doing well, we are growing around the globe and learning how to keep progressing every year. When we launched the brand in 2014, we were feeling so disconnected from snowboarding brands- everything from product to their story. From day one we did things our way, pretty much disregarding the standard snowboard business model and creating our own. For United Shapes, the next step is to keep walking our own path, to always steer the brand in a direction that is true to our ideas, to open a larger space within snowboarding where we feel we have a voice and to build stronger relationships with those people that hear our voice.

game in order to make an Italian snowboard movie happen again. To tell the truth, the genesis of the project was quite natural: the idea came simultaneously from the riders protagonists and from the Sequence team, we’ve just realized the intentions and organized the shootings to make the movie happen.

The 2019 season brought many news for Sequence Magazine. Among these, a specific one is very important to all of us: the first Sequence Movie ever. The last video showing the Italian snowboard scene dates back to 2015 and after that, many projects have followed giving just a partial glimpse of certain aspects of the national scene, but nothing more.

We had 3 crews of riders and they worked independently on different terrains and spots with their filmers. The names of our protagonists are: Emiliano Lauzi, Emil Zulian, Loris Framarin, Alberto Maffei, Nicola Dioli, Gianmarco Maiocco, Jack Errichiello e Nicola Ganz. The movie has been filmed in Arlberg, Prato Nevoso, Livigno, Seiser Alm, Stelvio, Innsbruck and Val di Fassa.

“From a media point of view, a movie that gave voice to new Italian talents and resorts was missing for too long in Italy. This project wants to promote them, putting them in direct connection with Europe - and its stronger riders - through our media and its exclusive format, attentive to aesthetics but also to the technical side. A Made in Italy product with a European vocation!” tells Denis Piccolo, Sequence Magazine Editor in Chief.

“Shooting with Sequence was a great experience!” states the rider Emil Zulian. “With my background made mainly of park and contest, filming in the backcountry was a challenge that made me realize how much effort, dedication and work is behind every single shot! I can not wait to start filming the next episode!”

Last winter has been great and a leverage of new riders with their desire to do and get involved in front of the camera provided a great impulse, so it seemed logical to us to get in the

Zero because it has no previous records, so it is the progenitor of a totally new thing. Zero is also a number with multiple meanings.

Even the rider Emiliano Lauzi was enthusiastic: “For me it is an honor to be a protagonist in an all-Italian movie, which has been missing for too long!”

And here we can recall the subtitle, half full. Everything depends on the perspective with which you look at things and face situations: zero can be nothing, but it also can be everything, just as the glass can be half full or half empty.

The name of the movie, in its essence, is extremely symbolic. Sequence Movie means that it is a video made by Sequence, not a project that we participated in or that we sponsored: we are responsible of all its faults and merits, as well as having full control of it.

“The name of the movie itself embodies our resilience and desire to continue,” tells Francesco Zoppei – Sequence Movie editor, “the Episode Zero (Half Full) wants to be a strong sign of positivity regarding the Italian and international snowboard scene.”

Zero because it has no previous records, so it is the progenitor of a totally new thing. Zero is also a number with multiple meanings because it means nothing, which, however, must be distinguished from “lack of value”, because it has in fact a completely different meaning. To use a comparison we like, if for example the temperature is zero, the water freezes, a situation far from worthless. Then, if the zero is placed in front of a number it does not change its value, with a decimal point the number gets divided by ten, while if the zero is put after the number that increases tenfold.

This meaning can be applied to riders, who have often found themselves facing moments that only their willpower has transformed into occasions and victories, both for Sequence as a media, which believes in the project by putting two zeroes behind the one percentage and is sure that the half-full glass will not only be filled to the brim, but it will also gloriously overflow!

Hi Jeremy, where are you and what are you doing right now? I am at home, trying to get my work done before it snows. How did the whole Ode To Muir concept come out? With the Deeper, Further and Higher trilogy I tried to incorporate an environmental message into those films but it never felt right. I had been brainstorming how to do a film like that for over ten years. Slowly I put the pieces together and made Ode to Muir happen. How did you pick your adventure companion Helena Hight? I wanted to bring someone from a different part of the sport world into the wilderness so the viewer could see how powerful nature is. Elena has been a champion for Protect Our Winters and was coming from a tough competitive season so I felt she would be a good fit. And what about the place chosen, the John Muir Wilderness? John Muir was the first person to introduce the concept that nature is important for the human spirit and it needs to be protected. He did this with his words in the 1800’s. Those words still carry a lot of weight and give perspective and wisdom to today’s current challenges that nature and humans face. They end up being the thread through the film. Which were the best and the worst moments of the expedition? The best was living amongst nature for so long. We had no real plan other than a starting point and a finish one. We just let nature pull us in and take us on an adventure. The hard part was leaving. My trips continue to get longer and longer in nature, but it is always so hard to leave. My life out of the mountains gets more complicated. In nature everything makes sense. My mind is clear and my breaths deeper. Jeremy and politics: tell us about your commitment and what has to be done to slow

down Global Warming. We need a change in the global infrastructure, from fossil fuels to clean energy. There is a growing consensus amongst global scientists that a carbon fee would greatly speed up this transition. It would penalize large polluters and reward carbon reduction. Could you briefly explain us about POW Action Fund? POW AF was set up in order for us to publicly support climate champions and help get them elected. Up until this last election, the US was run by climate deniers. They are funded by the fossil fuel industry and work hard to making burning fossil fuels cheap and clean energy expensive. We were able to influence this last election by inspiring the youth to turn out and vote for climate champions. We were able to beat over 30 climate deniers and win back the House of Representatives. This is an important step that will hopefully help us in the 2020 Presidential election. Ok, now let’s go back to plain snowboarding: can you briefly tell us the highlights in the Jones’ snowboard lineup? The expansion of our surf shapes line. People continue to embrace these new concepts and we are giving them more options. The surf shapes really change the feeling of a traditional snowboard and can turn the mundane into magic through new concepts. They are easy to ride and work well in a variety of conditions. Which are the main eco-friendly features of Jones snowboard decks? When we find more sustainable material, we use them in the whole line. This season our boards have recycled abs/edges, flax topsheet, basalt stringers, and eco-plastic topsheet. We also really focus on durability so they last hundreds of days on the mountain. Seems like you’re always working on something: now that Ode To Muir is done, which is your next project or what are you focusing on? Many seeds have been planted, I will slowly decide which ones I should put water on.

It was early winter 2018 when we decided we wanted to do something to promote snowboarding in a way that did not revolved around social media and likes - we wanted to create an event, an experience and real snowboard adventure. We believe that snowboarding is starting to loose its edge, because less and less is happening on the mountain - it is all just posted on social media. We decided to put our money where our mouths were and created the Run To The Hills - Lofoten Adventure. This Lofoten Adventure was based loosely around the idea that any snowboarder from around the world was invited to join us, the Nitro Pro Team and Family, with its board for 2 weeks of exploring the Lofoten Islands. All they would had to do was follow our journey on our website map locator, plan and then just show up to go on an adventure of a lifetime. After planning the journey with our Norwegian connections, ex-Nitro pro Erik Botner and myself (Nitro TM currently living in Norway), we had it all figured out. The crew that was scheduled to come along on this adventure of a lifetime was: Eero Ettala, Bryan Fox, Griffin Siebert, Benny Urban, Dominik Wagner, Elias Elhardt, Simon Gschaider, Jan Scherrer, Bob Plumb, Markus Rohrbacher, Pirmin Juffinger, Andi Aurhammer, Knut Eliassen, Torgeir Bergrem, Sven Thorgren, Ludvig Billtoft, Basti Rittig, and many many more. We set off from Munich, Germany on March 10th with our Nitro x Audi cars and drove approximately 3000km to the Norwegian Lofoten Islands. As you could imagine the trip was nothing less than breathtaking, floating multiple oceans on ferries, crossing endless fjords and cruising some of the world’s most breathtaking roads with one goal in mind - Lofoten. One of the highlights of the drive was crossing

camping together. As the days went on we found new valleys, new peaks, new camp spots and plenty of epic runs. One of the most memorable day was during the first week of our trip, we packed up our first camp on the Hinnøya islands and headed to the island of Austvågøya to hike up to the top of a mountain called Rundtinden (803 Meters Over The Sea). The crew set out to get to the summit and camp on top of the peak for the night. The hike is only around 2/3 hours long, but if you are carrying all the gear for camping, you better be ready to use a little more time and get sweaty and tired - so remember to bring layers. We were used to yell out the famous mountaineering saying: “you sweat you die” while hiking to remember people to pace themselves. After ascending the summit, the crew set up the tents and began to shred what Rundtinden had to offer, 360 views and playful terrain with postcards like backdrops. Once the sun set around 10:45 pm, it was time to break out the gas stoves and start making soup, noodles and chilli. There is no greater moment than experiencing a sunset on the summit with a big group of friends and new acquaintances. We made it through the night on the peak of Rundtinden. It was incredible. There was no wind (which is rare) and the temperatures were above freezing. The next morning was magical - imagine waking up and drinking your morning coffee on a 800 meter peak in the sun with no wind,

the world famous Atlantic Ocean Road, if you are ever driving through Norway we would recommend taking this detour. Another tip regarding road trips through Norway is buying snacks and food at the grocery stores (Rema 1000, Kiwi and many more) instead of spending 5x as much at gas stations. Once our crew finally arrived on the Island of Lofoten, we set up our camp on the top of a peak with 360 degree views of the dramatic landscape and set off into the mountains to take our first turns into what seemed to be a never ending sunset. After riding until the sun went down, the crew of more than 20 people skinned back to base camp for a camp fire, beers and mother nature’s own light show - the Northern Lights. Snow camping is not something everyone does, but it is something that I recommend you to do. With the right sleeping bag and pad it was possible to stay warm and comfy all night long. The experience is worth it because you are out in the elements, and the best part is waking up in the snow and just get your board and go. The first night was one to be remembered, it is not often that you get a group of 20+ snowboarders from all over the world in Lofoten, Norway

88

A couple of tips for snow camping: 1) When you set up your tent, dig out a hole in front of it so it’s easier to get in and out of it, and you also have a nice spot where to put your boots. 2) Eat a hot meal before going to bed and drink some warm tea, this will help you stay warm and get heat into the sleeping bag 3) Use two sleeping pads below your sleeping bag. The first layer will keep the cold away from you. 4) Put hot water into a water bottle and put it into your sleeping bag. 5) Remember you are camping - enjoy it.

not to mention peaks sticking out of the sea everywhere. It was a dream come true. We took some time to enjoy the exceptional location and surroundings and then we decided it was time to strap on the boards and surf the lines that the mountain had to offer. We road lines, built quarter pipes, caught air and did long turns for hours. Once the sun had disappeared behind the clouds we decided it was time to go down. We thought there would be no better way to end the day, that started on the summit of a mountain to, than to go surfing. Lofoten gives you some of the most exotic surf locations the world has to offer, one of the most famous location is the Unstad Beach. The crew got out of the snowboard gear and loaded up the Audi cars with surfboards and drove off to Unstad, which was about a 1.5 hour drive away from Rundtinden. The waves were surprisingly pumping when we arrived and we hustled into the ocean with our wetsuit, booties, and gloves in the 5+ degree weather. There is something surreal about walking through a snowy beach out into the water to go surfing. Once in the water we could not stop talking about how unreal of a day that had been. It was the ultimate Double Boarding day, waking up on an arctic summit and literally dropping in from the tent, to ending the day with arctic surfing. Wow! We were so inspired by this trip that we decided to turn this adventure into a section of our new and upcoming Nitro Team movie - OFFLINE. So be sure to check it out when it drops next fall 2019, but in the meantime just go snowboarding and create your own adventures!

LAST WORD TXT: SEQUENCE CREW PIC: SILVANO ZEITER

All the moments before a day of riding, whether it is on slopes, park or powder, are characterized by the sacred ritual of preparation. There is no proven formula for this ritual, everyone has his own recipe that works and makes you mentally ready for the day to come. There are those who meticulously prepare board, boots and outerwear and puts them in the usual place because they know that they will be easier to find the following day, there are people that don’t prepare anything, people that have a particular ritual for boots, for gloves: there are lot of rituals, from the most logical to the most absurd. There are those who get up early in the morning to have all the time they need for breakfast and preparation, but there are people who can get ready in 5 minutes after the alarm rang: usually the last ones forget a few gears at home and realize it only when they already are in the parking lot. And then there is that moment when you are ready and you are walking to the resort, with your board under your arm: the snow crunches under the soles and the bitter cold makes you regret the blankets a little bit, but you know that what is going to come will be worth no matter of the hassles and the hours of sleep lost. These moments, especially for the first winter rides like those you are approaching these days, are unique. Even if you are a veteran, the first seasonal rides always trigger the same emotions, the impatience to get to the top and face the first corners is unstoppable and everything becomes extremely beautiful: the crowd at the ski lifts, your new boots that hurt you a bit, the cap that scratches and the skipass in the wrong pocket that forces you to move like an acrobat to reach the turnstile sensor. These are the moments that make every beginning of the season special and the ones we can never get tired of: welcome back winter. 96

Areaeffe grows along the length of the Grimod piste over an area of 20.000 sqm with a length of 600 meters; it welcomes structures of all levels, from beginners to the most experts and demanding. The structure is maintained in a manic way, shaped and groomed each morning for the joy of snowboarders and freestyle skiers. An easy zone, entirely dedicated to the beginners, allows a safe approach to the world of the freestyle: sequences of funbox, railboxs satisfy the beginners in freestyle. Kickers, funboxes, rails of all types “fill”, instead, intermediate and expert lines. Located at 2200m, the snowpark is reachable from the center of Aosta in about 30 minutes (gondola + liasion + cable car): not bad!
