EDITORIAL BY

D AV I D E F I O R A S O

“To go beyond the appearance! That’s the goal of this new magazine ". It was December 2010 and Nicolò Balzani inaugurated with these words the editorial on the first issue of The Pill. “We want to tell what’s not usually seen, what remains hidden behind a surf contest, a snowboard video or a skate shooting. To show the world of action sports from the point of view of those who sell, distribute and organise it". Reading those words now, we are even more aware of our change. In seven years we have traveled thousands of kilometres, exchanged hundreds of phone calls, gathered dozens of appointments, collected one shooting after another. In the moment it is embodied, that spirit needs to give air to its own vibration, that air obtained from its previous experiences. This spirit has a vibration that is the result of what it has previously experienced. This spirit has evolved, has changed direction, has undergone deep restyling and it is now ready to cross borders. It went from telling behind the scenes, what was not seen, to the more essential things for eyes and mind. It came out of the shadows to open its horizons, to see things in a different, better light. It has rediscovered contact with nature, an amazing tool to counterbalance technology. The aim of these considerations is to put our convictions in order, in front of the perturbation caused by doubta. At least once a year, let us the time to reflect on ourselves. To remember, not to celebrate.

B OA R D R I D E R S P U R C H AS E S B I L L A B O N G I N T E R N AT I O N A L Boardriders Inc., owner of Quiksilver, Roxy and DC brands, has signed an agreement to purchase the rival Billabong International. The US company, under the control of the Oaktree in-

vestment fund, which already owns 19% of Billabong, will purchase the remaining parts of the brand valued 380 million of Australian dollars. The merger will also bring together other brands as Rvca, Element, VonZipper and Xcel; a colossus with 630 stores in 28 countries.

Dave Tanner from Oaktree is in charge to run Boardriders and, once the purchase transaction is completed by the end of June, will be general manager instead of Franรงais Pierre Agnes.

L A S P O R T I VA M O U N TA I N R U N N I N G C U P 2 0 1 8 The Mountain Running Cup circuit is ready to start again. The organisers of the most prestigious skyraces in the country gathered in La Sportiva to decide a budget and plan the new appointments. The most important

news concerns the stages, that have all been reconfirmed: 6 races, 3 regions, 9700 meters in altitude and 133 km in total. After the first edition, the Skylakes (VI) will enter by all means in the circuit that will start again

from Marone, on the shores of Lake Iseo, on Sunday May 6th 2018. Then it will continue on the spectacular ridges of Ledro, on the 10th of June, to finally get to Tesero, in the heart of the Val di Fiemme. After this turning point and the holiday in August, it will be time for the San Fermo Trail in Borno (BS), before the final

stage in the mountains of Valgerola with the International Rosetta SkyRace, on Sunday September 2nd.

S P O R T, FA S H I O N A N D N E W T R E N D S I N I S P O M U N I C H 2 0 1 8 Over 2,700 exhibitors divided into 16 pavilions. Those are the first numbers of Ispo Munich, the

most important European trade show dedicated to winter sports. Among the new trends that will be presented from the 28th to the 31th of January 2018 in the Vision section, there will be the sportswear as a real lifestyle. Urban fashion is increasingly moving to the direction of sport (and viceversa), representing a great potential for designers and companies who are following this trend

at full speed. Retailers have understood that the reference market goes beyond traditional sport. Shops are filled with more and more products dedicated to those people who look for comfortable and functionality clothes that can be worn either in the office and for a walk in the mountains.

R O S S I G N O L P U R C H AS E S DA L E O F N O R WAY Rossignol Group, whose majority belongs to the Scandinavian fund Altor, has signed an agreement for the acquisition of the Norwegian brand Dale of Norway. Since Dale was born, in

1879, it has distinguished itself for the high quality of its knitwear production, sold in more than 25 countries. In the last decade, the brand has transformed traditional Norwegian design into a stylistic concept that can be applied to casual fashion, outdoor and sport. The purchase

of Dale, said Bruno Cercley, CEO of Rossignol, will help to support the growth of the group

thanks to the high rate of craftsmanship guaranteed by the production site in Dalekvam. Viceversa, Rossignol will provide support to Dale on an international expansion scale.

B A N F F M O U N TA I N F I L M F E S T I VA L W O R L D T O U R I TA LY 2 0 1 8 Great spaces, uncontaminated mountains, wild nature. An evening dedicated to the amazing outdoor cinema, a trip to the most remote and fascinating places on the planet to experience

extraordinary adventures together with athletes, adventurers and explorers. Mountaineering, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and action sports: every evening there will be an event

of more than two hours of videos with a high rate of emotions and fun. Now at its sixth edition, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour Italy will be inaugurated in Milan on

February 19th 2018 and will go on in the main cities of our country with a 28-stages tour.

LEKI’S COLLAB WITH BOA TECHNOLOGY The first Boa closure system for ski gloves has been developed. Leki, a leader in gloves and ski poles, will introduce this new product from winter 2018/19. The locking system will be included in the Progressive Tune S Boa alpine glove and in the Nordic Tune Shark Boa dedicated to cross country. Boa System was used for the first time in 2001 in Vans and K2 snowboard boots, and it is now largely used in golf, running, cycling and hiking. Leki will combine this innova-

tion with Trigger, its triggering technology that allows a direct connection between the ski pole and the glove using a snap system.

A R C O R O C K STA R 2 0 1 8 On the 21st and 22nd of April the vertical walls of Garda Trentino will be the setting of the third edition

of Arco Rock Star, the international climbing photography contest. A two days where athletes and pho-

tographers will try to get the best photo that describes the athletic gesture, but also the landscape and everything that revolves around climbing. Two categories: the Pros, selected by invitation among the

promising names of outdoor photography throughout all Europe, and Open, thanks to the subscription on www.arcorockstar.it. A news from the third edition is the special prize "La Sportiva Anniversary”.

Arco Rock Star will celebrate with this prize the 90th anniversary of La Sportiva. The event will take place together with the Adventure Awards Days, the international festival of exploration.

ODLO’S COLLAB WITH ZAHA HADID The Swiss brands renewed itself with sparkling innovations. Functionality, design and the extra-

ordinary collaboration with Zaha Hadid Design, the architecture studio of the iconic "queen of the curves", are what characterised the fall/winter 2018/19 collection, giving new life to the sports underwear. The result of this incredible partnership is the exclusive series of Odlo Futureskin baselayers, in whose style we can recognise the language of Zaha Hadid with its continuous

fluidity and clear design. The new collection convinces both for its innovative design but also because of the Organic Bodymapping technology that brings the different needs of the body into a single garment.

P R OW I N T E R STA R T U P V I L L AG E 2 0 1 8 A reality born from the experience of Prowinter and that renews its commitment and the desire

to give opportunities to new winning ideas. Prowinter Startup Village 2018 is a place dedicated to young entrepreneurs and their initiatives: a space that comes from a careful research operation

on international scale made by Prowinter, the expo dedicated to the mountain sports business will be scheduled in Bolzano from 10th to 12th April 2018. Startup Village has been created as a platform and as a sounding board for the most innovative ideas dedicated to the mountain

world: clothing, equipment, technology and startups offering solutions for mountain tourism. The contest for young brands is now open.

INOV-8 G-SERIES: GRAFENE SPORT SHOES Inov-8 launches a revolutionary news in the sports footwear market. The British brand has collaborated with the University of Manchester to become the first company to incorporate graphene in a running shoe. Laboratory tests have shown that the rubber soles of these shoes,

that will be on the market in 2018, are 50% more durable, 50% more elastic and 50% more

resistant to wear. Graphene is the thinnest material on earth and is 200 times stronger than steel. Isolated for the first time by the University of Manchester in 2004, it is the first two-di-

mensional material in the world with a thickness of only one atom and has the potential to revolutionise many areas of technology. 10

Completely leak-proof, its functional design allows you to open and close the cap with just one hand. It’s totally BPA-free and made of 18/8 stainless steel.

In the Montebelluna districts there are some of the greatest Italian footwear excellences including Diemme, who has been synonym of high quality since 25 years, and Diadora, one of the most famous sports brands in the world born in 1948 as a mountain boots workshop. This collaboration on the silhouette of the Roccia Vet model represents the beginning of a series of exclusive projects to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Diadora. A boot made of full-grain leather, with a double logo on the tongue and on the heel.

Legends Collide, aka that meeting of legends that we were all waiting for. Timberland’s nubuck leather and The North Face's unmistakable downfilled nylon come together for the first time ever. From the collaboration between the two brands of the Vf Corporation group, has born a modern day retelling of the legendary 6-inch boot and of the classic Nuptse jacket by TNF, both with an unmistakable DNA. A perfect mix for a great tribute to the two authentic American icons.

Hender Scheme, a Japanese brand known for its natural leather manufacturing, has collaborated with Casio's G-Shock division to produce an exclusive version of the iconic DW5600 model. The unaltered design is proposed in a natural and elegant shade with handstitched strap in vegetable tanned leather destined to age with use. There is no product that can explain the historical heritage of Reebok better than Classic Leather. His debut was in the fall of 1983, it was the first time a running shoe used leather. The collaboration with Raised by Wolves renews the model for an ideal appeal during winter months. The upper combines an extraordinarily simple look with this timeless silhouette. Gore-Tex lining to keep your feet dry, safe and ventilated for a long time. A die-cut Eva midsole to absorb shocks.

After the 2016 Heritage Traveler Collection, Shinsuke Takizawa of Neighborhood reveals the big capsule collection made in collab with Burton Japan. Combining Neighborhood's streetwear and workwear aesthetics with Burton's functional and insulating construction, the result is a collection of essential leisure items in khaki, heather green, black and olive. Bomber jackets, coats, snow pants, caps, t-shirts and work shirts with the Vermont and Tokyo tags to confirm their merger.

Before announcing his new collab with StĂźssy, Alpha Industries created a capsule collection with the raincoat brand Stutterheim: three classic Alpha models, renewed by the Swedish team with their characteristic rubberised cotton. The M-65 Fishtail is a unisex parka that combines performance, technology and style. A waterproof jacket for all seasons with a removable hood, double stitched seams, YKK zippers, chest pockets with snap buttons and adjustable waist cord.

Uncrate further expands its dense series of collaborations of last months. After Bradley Mountain and Jack + Mulligan, the father of all men's gear sites signs this Rover Pack with Topo Designs. The combination of the Cordura 1050D ballistic fabric, with an American bison leather base, gives it an elegant appearance while maintaining a classic long-lasting silhouette. 16 liters of capacity, inner lining and a 15 "laptop case. Handmade in Colorado.

Part of the Olympic national team, and one of the first women to close a double backflip, Aimee Fuller is one of the most amazing talents in the women's snowboard scene. As rider of the European team, she collaborated with Vans on a customised version of the all-terrain Ferra boot. The Vans Hybrid Boa closure system, combined with the Custom Slide-Guide, offers the most customisable fit that can be found, anatomically designed for the female foot. New thing for the winter season 2017/18 is the Reach Around strap to wrap in the inner shoe.

The fourth collab between Oakley and Jeff Staple is on one of the most known model of the eyewear giant: the Frogskin. Its first appearance was in 1985 but disappeared from the scene for several years, then it went back into the market following the great demand. In this partnership the classic frame has been revitalised with the combination of colours and unique Pigeon details. Plutonite lenses with 100% UV protection and HDO technology ensure clear images without distortion.

ECO SEVEN BY DAV I D E F I O R AS O

˜ VAU D E G R E E N S H A P E Vaude dedicates body and soul to respect the environment we live in. In 2010 Vadue created its own protocol called Green Shape, in order to fill the absence of an international standard based on criteria that define an eco-friendly product. Nowadays the brand is studying even stricter prerequisites concerning the entire cycle of production, from design to recycling after the use. It’s not only about the main fabrics but also additional components (wires, hinges, buttons...) and the production sites must embrace the strict Green Shape rules. The Bluesign certification for textile materials is at the base of those principles, but the Green Shape products can not, for example, contain fluorocarbons, instead Bluesign allows their use under strict conditions. The warranty explicitly excludes the use of critical materials such as PVC, nanotechnologies or fabrics printed with solvents. The purpose for 2018 is having an entire collection with zero environmental impact.

S U STA I N A B L E S U M M I T S C O N F E R E N C E 2 0 1 8 In 2010, the American Alpine Club launched the first Sustainable Summits Conference with the primary aim of sharing solutions about waste management on the mountains. At the Golden Conference in 2014 and at Aoraki's Conference in 2016, there were also talks about climate changes and about the problems of accessing to the high lands. From the 12th to the 14th of June 2018, landowners, researchers, NGO representatives and non-profit organisations, outdoor companies, guides and mountaineers from all around the world will be in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc to share knowledge, experiences and solutions for the future of the mountains, focusing on their role in today's society, on the first effects of the climate and on the impacts of human activities in mountains.

THE ORTOVOX WOOL PROMISE Safety is a top priority for Ortovox and represents an essential value. But safety doesn’t concern only products intended to protect you in danger situations in the mountains or to defend you against natural elements, it also includes men and nature. A significant example are the working conditions and the high standards in animal welfare. With the recently published 19-page social report, Ortovox reveals the current state of its commitment to the subject. In the two-year period 2017/18, the project they are working on is called "Ortovox Wool Promise", which will be presented at ISPO during the whole expo. With this so-called OWP, the brand wants to show the importance of animal protection by focusing on the management of farms, of the territory and also on slaughter and transportation. The over 60 controlled indicators were found during the annual audits by independent and certified auditors.

ECO SEVEN TEN NEW MEMBERS FOR EOCA In the second half of 2017 there was a consistent flow of members into the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA). Agencies, distributors, start-ups and established companies, all at the service of the European outdoor industry, all of them wanted to be involved in environmental protection. Some of the new members are the historic Czech manufacturer of camping equipment Pinguin, the UK distributor Ultralight Outdoor Gear, the Dutch communication agency 333 Media, the Swiss multifunctional clothing brand Bergstop, the Swedish brand of camping products Wildo, the Indonesian manufacturer of backpacks and travel bags Tasindo Tassa Industries and the social company WakaWaka which produces solar powered lamps and chargers.

BURTON ANNOUNCES NEW AMBITIOUS S U STA I N A B I L I T Y P R O J EC T S Burton officially announces new ambitious sustainability projects. His new goals are focused on three main categories: product, people and playground. Among the commitments to be achieved by 2020 there is the fact that all Burton softgoods will use 100% approved Bluesign materials, 100% sustainable cotton and 50% recycled polyester, achieving a PFC-free hydro-repellency. 100% of Burton factories will conform themselves to the Fair Labor Association standards. Thanks to the use of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software, 20% of the carbon emissions created in the production of hard goods will be reduced. Among the goals there’s also the 20% reduction of carbon dioxide in the global Headquarters, the diversion of 75% of landfill waste and the introduction of an end-of-life program at retailers.

1 % F O R T H E P L A N E T: NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS 2017 was a year of great turmoil on political, social, cultural, economic and, last but not least, environmental level. Kate Williams, CEO of “1% for the Planet” organisation, celebrates the work of a global network that has been grown in terms of size and activities. This diversified network, made of companies, individuals and brave citizens, has shown how, in times of crisis and governments that take backward steps, we can always choose to take our responsibility and creating positive changes with commitment and activism. It's now time to bring the movement to the next level, through the growth of this network, we can achieve a bigger collaboration and coherent actions to realise the shared vision of a healthier planet and a more prosperous and resilient economy.

R O M S CA N D I N AV I A TO P O L A N D : THE LAST EUROPEAN FORESTS Fagerholmsloken Forest, in northern Sweden, was one of the oldest one in the boreal Great Northern Forest ecosystem, that went from Scandinavia to Canada. Today it no longer exists. It has been destroyed to produce handkerchiefs, toilet paper and napkins. But Scandinavian forests are not the only ones in danger. Between Poland and Belarus there is in fact a forest that Greenpeace tries to protect: Bialowieza Forest, the last part of a primary forest that covered central Europe. Considered UNESCO heritage, it hosts between 11,000 and 25,000 species, including the European bison. This year, the Polish Environment Minister changed a national law which results in eliminating any form of control over the cutting of trees. This was the beginning of a massive deforestation.

his technology for thermal insulation ensures greater heat retention in colder conditions without adding weight and volume. Thanks to an exclusive patented melting process, the hollow fibres retain more air that helps to have a better thermal insulation, reducing the need for stabilisers in the construction of the garment and ensuring greater adaptability and versatility. Power fill is the perfect

choice for those looking for thermal and light clothes and, thanks to its hydrophobic properties, it can resist to the absorption of moisture, ensuring a quick drying. Power Fill is proposed in different weights: 60g, 80g, 100g, 135g, 170g, 200g. What’s Polartec? PrimaLoft Black Insulation Thermoplume PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume is 100% synthetic but it looks like a down jacket and it offers equivalent thermal performance. This is the latest addition to the catalogue of PrimaLoft, Inc., a world leader in providing comfort solutions with high performance insulation, fabrics and yarns, that was presented at last year's ISPO in Munich and is already establishing a solid reputation in the outdoor market. For the 2018/19 winter season, about 40 brands in the outdoor and fashion industry will use the microfibre insulation bulk in their product lines. MAMMUT EIGERJOCH

W

hy is this new kind of insulation so successful? PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume is made of feathers of small, silky fibres that form a bulk insulation. It simulates the fluidity, the feeling and the appearance of the goose-down, but also offers real water-repellent properties of PrimaLoft fibres to provide a soft and compressible thermal performance, comparable to the 550 fill power feather under construction, in wet conditions. PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume offers an ethical alternative to animal products, a need that is becoming increasingly important for consumers, as well as for partners’ brands. Its construction makes possible to use the traditional machines that blow the feather, simplifying the production process. All of this gives to designers more freedom to create innovative clothing at a competitive and stable price. Jochen Lagemann, Managing Director at PrimaLoft Europe & Asia, says: "PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume is the logical evolution and the answer to the growing demand from designers, brands and customers who want to replace the down jacket, but at the same time still have the best performance. This demand applies to both outdoor and fashion brands. Based on our current success we are already working on further developments in bulk insulation. "

Some brands such as Ferrino, Montane, Mountain Force, Sun Valley or Tierra have already successfully introduced insulation in their current winter season 2017/18. Feedback from distributors and users has been very positive. Terry Stephenson, Montane Marketing Manager says: "Montane was one of the first brands to adopt PrimaLoft's innovations more than15 years ago. Being the first outdoor British brand to launch PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume in our products has exceeded our customers' demands, creating truly innovative products in the Icaro men's and Phoenix women's jackets. We are really satisfied with the performance of our extensive test programs for ambassadors and we can’t wait to present the four new models for Fall Winter 2018, based on the commercial success of this past season ".

About 40 brands in the outdoor and fashion industry will use the exclusive PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume in their collections for the winter season 2018/19. These include Berghaus, Eider, Head, Inov8, Mammut, Millet, New Balance, Quicksilver, Rossignol, Schöffel, Sergio Tacchini, Tommy Hilfiger or Under Armour. The Austrian ski and clothing brand Head has converted its entire ski col26

lection for the next winter season in PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume: "In Head Sportswear, in a long term period we want to eliminate animal materials such as feather or fur. PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume is the perfect material on the market for this: the heat retention capacity is similar to the one of the feather but its feeling and look are better in wet conditions. It satisfies our performance standards and simplifies the transition to synthetic materials "- says Stefan Rauch, Marketing manager of Head Sportswear. The latest innovation from PrimaLoft is also an important part of the upcoming winter sports collection from the traditional German brand Schöffel: “We've been using PrimaLoft's high quality products in our collections since 2004 and PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume immediately convinced us. It combines the properties of the down jacket with the value of synthetic insulation. It has been included in our Thermo Jacket Val D’Isere2, it helps the ambitious athlete with the best thermal performance as well as its breathability and its short drying time "- says Stefan Späth, Head of Product Development in Schöffel.

HOVR Under Armour New Tech. BY DENIS PICCOLO

T

he American brand Under Armour presents its latest innovation in footwear cushion technology: the HOVR. It is a cushion platform designed to guarantee the perfect combination of amortisation and reactivity, without compromises. The midsole uses a patented foam in collaboration with Dow Chemical, a leader in innovation, which guarantees a very soft effect and extraordinary amortisation on every stride. This new system satisfies runners’ need to have a shoe that not only supports you, but also

guarantees an extraordinary return of energy and an excellent cushioning. Another important aspect of the HOVR technology is the "Energy Web", a mesh network that protects the core of amortisation, helping to maintain the shape of the midsole and offering a remarkable reactivity and return of energy. All these features improve the performance - with this technology, the shoe absorbs part of the impact, reducing it and increasing comfort. This platform will be introduced in two styles, Phantom and Sonic.

Outdoor Expo Idea. PHOTO BY THOMAS MONSORNO TEXT ROBERTO D'AMICO

A gap in national scene of events dedicated to the outdoor world. Here comes the challenge of BolognaFiere to the sports and outdoor tourism sector. From the 2nd to the 4th of March BolognaFiere Exhibition Center will host the first edition of the Outdoor Expo. An event designed, created and realised to fill the existing gap in the outdoor scene. Nowadays the outdoor market is constantly growing and it continues to make followers among enthusiasts and agonists, but on the other hand nobody has ever tried to put all these realities in one big event and present them together to the public. The Outdoor Expo will be the "indoor" home of all sports disciplines that can easily be found under the name of "outdoor": every types of climbing, from bouldering to lead, Nordic walking and trail running, hiking, camping, orienteering.

The Experience area will be able to attract people with its free trials, lessons, demonstrations, theoretical introductory and to make them fall in love with those disciplines with breathtaking shows, competitions and contests; the Expo area is where you will be able to touch and experience all the latest news, in terms of materials and technologies applied to the outdoor; the Community area where will be possible to organise seminars, conferences, debates, meetings and discuss with the national and international protagonists about any issues related to outdoor sports; last but not least the Travel area, because at the base of every experience that can be defined outdoor there is always a travel experience.

But, in order to create an event destined to become the benchmark of that kind market in the upcoming years, it was necessary to extend the concept of "outdoor" to all those sports and activities that are practiced in the open air. Here comes the idea of conceptually dividing the Outdoor Expo into some parts based on the natural four elements and including in this event sports such as kayak, e-bike, mud run, running, biking, stand up paddle, aerial disciplines, surfing.

One month before the start of the event we can say that the true intuition was precisely not wanting to give up the tourist aspect: the outdoor travel. Indeed, precisely this part has been strengthened and expanded to the concept of "Outdoor Family". For this reason, from the 2nd to the 4th March BolognaFiere will host all the national and international tourist realities that make the concept of outdoor sports an engine of their economy. All these aspects make Outdoor Expo, since its first edition, the perfect event to fill that gap in the outdoor sector and become, in the upcoming years, a reference point that will be able to compete with major international expos.

And then again, it was necessary to find a way to involve, enchant, intrigue both the fans of these disciplines and the neophytes or the simple curious ones. To make this happen, the event was structured into four large macro areas.

Eider x Esther Stocker

BY DENIS PICCOLO

A selection of products with a unique design, elegant and sporty at the same time, designed for women who are not only looking for the functionality of the product but also for a sophisticated and modern look to get noticed on the ski slopes.

A

mong the news that Millet Mountain Group (Millet - Eider - Lafuma) has in store for the Fall-Winter 2018 season there will be also an important renewal of the Eider brand proposal. The French brand, born in 1962 in Annecy from the idea of the tailor Ducruet, will propose for next season a collection created with the South Tyrolean artist Esther Stocker. The works of Esther Stocker are pure abstraction based on minimalist elements: horizontal and vertical lines, diagonals, all of that just in black and white and in some variations of grey. The artist's interest is for complex visual systems based on a squared structure, and his

obsession is to infinitely change the elements of these systems to create an organised chaos. Esther Stocker’s works have fascinated us thanks this ability to bring motion in his creations with an extremely rigid and geometric motif. The result is a selection of products with a unique design, elegant and sporty at the same time, designed for women who are not only looking for the functionality of the product but also for a sophisticated and modern look to get noticed on the ski slopes. The Esther Stocker line is not only dedicated to ski lovers: in this capsule there are also some items that can be used during the autumn, as well as some accessories dedicated to the theme of the rest of the collection. 34

This collab is looking for modernity that is also expressed in the change of colours of the logo, now in black and white, leaving behind the traditional red of the past years. This innovation will not change the philosophy of the brand, always looking for products that can adapt perfectly to the needs of the final consumer in terms of wearability and comfort. Proof of this is also the new "Motion First" brand concept: ergonomics clothes with elegance and style for all those who see the mountain as a possibility of escape and a moment of pleasure to spend together with the people you like, for people who are looking for freedom starting from their clothes.

Blackyak DAV I D R A N DA L L I N T E RV I E W E U R O P E A N D E S I G N D I R EC TO R AT B L AC K YA K B Y DENIS PICCOLO

sible, look beautiful and be ready for action – and all of this for the correct price. Inside the sportswear industry we only work on two seasons, however to develop highly technical, functional product there is barely enough time in 12 months to do this correctly. Altogether technical design is very demanding and frustrating, but when the correct results are achieved it is a very worthwhile experience.

Hi David, you’re the European Design Director at Blackyak. What does this mean? To be a design director

of any company means you need to know very clearly what you want to achieve with both design, direction and styling. This is simply a necessary part of the job, however, there is a large difference between working in this position for a company that is already very well established, as opposed to developing a company that is a new player in a very competitive market place. Blackyak however is a new and developing brand, so to develop something from scratch demands a completely different level of focus. It is always important to remember that the market place is neither expecting, waiting or even in some cases wanting new product. So, from the start, it is an up-hill challenge. You need to work with a very competent team to deliver great product, it is exceptionally important to present a story/ philosophy to make the brand’s intentions very clear. Combine this with innovative design and new functional detailing and you can begin to try and inspire people to consider moving away from established brands that they are comfortable with. Our target is to excite them with new styling and functional ideas that allow them to test not only the product but also themselves physically, functionally, financially and emotionally. Simply put, this is a very difficult thing to do and takes a certain amount of time. Therefore, emerging brands need time to penetrate the market properly. It is very rewarding to make this journey with a new brand and go through this set up phase. It’s for sure often challenging but also very rewarding. Normally for the first few seasons the brand will develop slowly before hitting the sweet spot and then everything goes very fast, so it is good to control this process so that when you need to go fast, you have all the right talent in position keep the momentum and control. I am very proud of the team of people I work with, those of whom I guide and those who guide me. For this reason, I am extremely happy in my position as Design Director of the Global collection for Blackyak.

From what do you draw your inspiration for new collections? Inspiration is always an interesting thing, some-

times it is very hard to find it and some time it is coming to you “quick as a flash” – when you have the feeling deep inside that what you are doing is correct… then most often it is. But you always need inspiration – I personally do not look at all at the outdoor industry for inspiration, this would simply be too easy! – and essentially wrong. I do not want Blackyak to follow the direction of any other brand, this would remove the chance of pure innovation. Personally, when my ideas tank is “empty” I would look to other product from a different perspective or angle and try to reimagine that item in a different way. For example, if you look at the underside of a Golf club (driver) this is the club that you would use to “t-off” with – the design and detailing of this small item is incredible, more colours than you can imagine, combined with different materials including Aluminum and or Carbon, with either a matt or chrome finish and many engraved branding details or words to explain how greatly this item will enhance your game. The golf driver is essentially a very small, strong purpose built item, but! – the amount of design and technical development involved in such an item is extraordinary. If you look at an object like this with a different perspective you can develop many, many ideas. I love to look for the surprise in objects that allow me to influence my design within apparel. I would follow this thinking and look at all objects that fit the profile. Cars, Buildings, Bikes, Bags… In fact, anything that is not at all related to clothing.

What are the difficulties in this job? Design is a very special area, we as humans all have taste some may have great taste and other may have little taste – however that is precisely the issue designers such as myself must deal with. Who is right and who is wrong? Design is a tool that allows development of an item that some must want. They must have a want for it, as it must be paid for… The higher the price, the more the individual must want the product. There lies the difficulty. We all like and want to have nice things, however in our industry we are not talking about a static object such as a vase or a chair, our products should have innovation & functionality, be robust, fit as perfectly as pos-

What does the collection look like for winter 18/19? What

can Blackyak's customers look forward to? The designs of

Blackyak are reduced - and yet unique. The collections feature tonal logos, allusions to the contours of yaks and the colourful connection to the Himalayas. Four colour stories for women and four for men are available in FW 18/19. In addition to the signature colour black, the men's collections also feature green, blue and red colours with tasteful names such as Twist of Lime, Snorkel Blue and Chili Pepper. For the ladies, black is complemented with turquoise, reddish and yellow tones. Sounding Biscay Bay, Pureed Pumpkin and Mango Mojito will certainly enrich the winter of 18/19.

When it comes to materials, Blackyak relies on its proven partners. The outer materials are made of robust Cordura or waterproof Gore-Tex materials. A new, waterproof Windstopper is used in the new Midshell category. The insulation materials used are G-Loft, Primaloft, Polartec, Alpha and goose down with certificate of proof (RDS). The warming fleece are made by Polartec and Cordura. Bundle all this together with more surprises, we look forward very much to releasing this collection. Product Highlights The new Midshell category includes the Hariana Jacket and Hariana Pants as well as the Modicana Jacket. All products impress with their comfort and incomparable breathability in the range of 3-layer jackets. The Hariana Jacket uses a 3L laminate construction from W.L. Gore & Associates to achieve the highest level of vapor transfer to maintain user comfort while providing excellent rain protection. It comes with a detachable Powder Skirt making it the ideal garment where comfort is required over absolute rain protection. The Hariana Pants are equipped with an innovative, removable suspender system that provides the user with additional wearing comfort.

The Brangus Jacket and Brangus Pants set new standards in freedom of movement for 3-layer jackets and trousers. This is made possible by the new Gore Stretch Technology and the special construction of the jacket and trousers. The waterproof jacket is additionally equipped with the Blackyak Barrier Technology and the new Velcro system. Newly designed chest pockets do not let water into the inside of the jacket even when the zipper is open. Blackyak launches another world first with the Niata Jacket: It is the first down jacket with stretch. The panels, which are padded with G-Loft, are mounted vertically and thus adapt ergonomically to the movement of outdoor athletes, without heat loss due to the compression of down chambers. In combination with the proven Mesh Box-Wall down chambers construction, the Niata Jacket keeps you warm even on particularly cold days.

Our target is to excite people with new styling and functional ideas that allow them to test not only the product but also themselves physically, functionally, financially and emotionally. Simply put, this is a very difficult thing to do and takes a certain amount of time.

Worn Wear Long live Patagonia

A

very special wooden van, designed for the occasion, left on January 13th from Engelberg to reach, by the end of April, several well-known mountain resorts such as Cortina, Livigno, Innsbruck, La Grave and Chamonix. 28 famous winter tourism destinations all over Europe. The Patagonia team of Worn Wear Tour will offer you free repairs of zippers, flaps, buttons, fabrics and more, and also give you great advices on how to repair jackets, trousers and sweaters by yourself. For the first time it will be also possible to repair technical clothes made in Gore-Tex.

"One of the most responsible things we can do as a brand is to produce high quality items and equipment that can last for years and can be repaired, so you won’t need to buy new ones. Worn Wear program celebrates the stories we wear through the clothing that comes with us in our adventures, helping us to use them for a longer time. And when those clothes can no longer be repaired they still can be recycled. "

38

"According to the British group WRAP by wearing our clothing for 9 months we can reduce our environmental impact of the 20-30% in terms of CO2 emissions, waste and water consume. And this only by producing andtrashing fewer things."

Worn Wear initiative encourages customers to extend the life of what they wear, repairing for free clothes from any brand (and not just Patagonia’s products). The brand new van, realised by the small Belgian team Wildernest, with the adventurous Tom de Dorlodot as a captain, has been specially modified to reach some of the most inaccessible mountain resorts in Europe and will have inside technical equipment for repairs but will also offer hot chocolate and bring a nice dose of positive energy on the ski slopes. All the team members will also provide you useful advices on how to keep clothes and ski equipment in good condition, season after season, and teach you specific darning techniques, patching, re-waterproofing of jackets and trousers, and replacing zip and hinges.

techniques. Last summer at Gore’s production headquarters we held a special training course to teach to the whole Worn Wear team to professionally repair Gore-Tex technical clothes. This initiative has the aim to promote the idea that it‘s always worth to extend the life of our products, a concept in which Gore has believing for over 20 years ".

Patagonia's Worn Wear program was born in 2013, its goal is to encourage customers to take care of their clothing, adopting proper washing methods and promptly repairing them when they break. Worn Wear therefore aims to keep clothes alive as long as possible. And when it comes the time to actually replace them (because worn to the point that they can no longer be used) it is important to invest in something that can last in time: this is why Patagonia produces the most functional and qualitatively best products with a lifetime guarantee. Stewart Sheppard, member of the Gore Fabrics Sustainability Team involved in the Worn Wear project, added: "At Gore’s, we always try to produce outdoor products that combine high technical performance with sustainable materials and production

Millet Rise Up Collective

BY DAV I D E F I O R AS O

It all starts when we leave the earth, driven by a force that pushes us upward. This need for altitude is in our nature. We cultivate it through our success. Our teamwork makes us grow. And we continue to move forward. Together we design our equipment and test it on every single summit. Mountaineering is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. It puts you in front of the difficulties and forces you to never give up. The mountain is an empty page for mountaineers, hikers, skiers and climbers,. They move everywhere, exploring new paths and discovering always more surprising routes. The witnesses of these adventures are the photographers. That's why Millet decided to give them space with the Rise Up collective. The keyword? A disruptive creativity and excitement for the optic nerve, challenging the senses and verticality.

From the idea to the snow. Ski-touring involves a challenge

in design, combining high-performance fabrics, lightweight materials and comfortable constructions. Millet gave complete control to the photographers Jeremy Bernard and Andres Beregovich to create the 18/19 collection. Bernard took care of the design phase at the Annecy headquarters while Beregovich took the prototypes to the glacier and tested them. Here’s their story.

Jeremy Bernard Corks and thumb tacksa

In order to show the first steps into the planning process, the photographer Jeremy Bernard has chosen to use the typical tools of the product manager. It's a serious task for a photographer, but Jeremy Bernard is used to extreme conditions! "Artificial light in offices and laboratories makes difficult to take pictures. To improve this process, my idea was to approach and capture close-ups with a shallow depth of field emphasising the details". Jeremy spent some time with the product managers. Once back in his studio, he edited the images, highlighting some parts and focusing his gaze on what really matters. With this material, he returned to Millet’s and spent a whole day on the third floor. "I borrowed the cork panels that the the girls use to create the collections, they were covered with sketches, notes and pinned images, I put my pictures on these panels. In some way, he connected the points by adding moments, faces, emotions, smiles and looks on a working document.

"I followed the various stages, from the choice of fabrics to finishes, from the selection of colours to the realisation of the models. Then we went down to the laboratory to build the final prototype and make the last changes. "At the end, Jeremy photographed the cork panels to produce original compositions: a visual dive into the frenetic vortex of the creative process that takes place in front of our eyes.

Andres Beregovich The mountain doesn't lie

Winter is not always nice. And freezing cold is the best to test the quality of the prototypes. Once the first samples leave the Millet laboratories, they must be tested in altitude and in action. The photographer Andres Beregovich followed the testers on the Jungfrau glacier, using his creative energy on Swiss glacier. Due to the short time, the Millet team jumped on a rack railway, carrying two huge bags full of jackets, trousers and backpacks. "The peculiarity of a prototype test is that the clothing is halfway between the sketches and the finished product. I wanted to convey the idea of an intermediate state, an unfinished process. So I mixed drawing and photography into the same image, using the preparatory sketches and the comments that emerged during the test session. " As he is used to, Andres wrote long notes before the shooting. He used a big yellow block full of notes and drawings “it’s useful to turn my ideas into words, in order to imagine better my photos. You have to respect very precise times when shooting in the mountains and you should not waste time. I know exactly when the sun will hit this slope and exactly when it will move behind that ridge”. Transfers from one place to another take time, so you must be efficient and your ideas should be clear.

Matt Georges Analogic freetouring Photography is a matter of light and substance. Is that film that runs on the back of the camera and, days later, unrolls on a bright table. It is the paper on which it is developed, cut, glued and manipulated. It is the snow whose surface plays so well with the light. These are the alchemical elements that Matt Georges loves to play with. Specialized in snowboard photography, he agreed to join the collective Rise Up with skiers Eva Walkner and Wadeck Gorak. The first thing you can notice, while Matt is shooting on the snow, is how heavy his backpack is. "I only brought analogic cameras with me, old and new, I started the day with a medium format Mamiya 6 × 7. Then I switched to a pinhole disposable camera of unpredictable quality, I also have my first camera, a 20 years old Nikon that fell a hundred times! For action shots I used a Canon EOS 3, with 8.5 frames per second. Films have only 36 exposures, the action must be short and sweet! In the end there’s my favorite: a Hasselblad X-Pan, which of-

fers a panoramic format that forces you to think and shoot in a different way". Working with film imposes a different discipline to the photographer: he must be patienct and takes his risks. After every picture, Matt will not check his camera's screen to see if the image is right. He can not do it, he just needs to wait for the development. "It's the nice part of the job, it’s an exciting aspect: the surprise to discover every photos in the lab!"

White Noise. Mammut elements. Ep 1.

Do you still hear the call of the nature? Listen… We are enthusiastic slaves of nature and unconscious prisoners of our time. We live with frantic pace every single day, but our passion tells us to slow down, we are the portrait of a complicated addiction that comes from a very simple necessity: the desire for freedom. Every day, between a subway ride and a sandwich swallowed in a bite, it sometimes happens to forget to breathe. Instead that icy breath that we exhale on the top of the mountains, with a drop that comes down from the nose, this is the only real fire that brings us back to a real, healthy and almost forgotten way of living. We are slaves of an existential welfare, the one that only nature can give us back. If Dave Peverett from Foghat sang "Slow ride, take it easy" in early 1975, there was a reason, wasn’t there? Mammut Elements is substance. Or maybe something more?

The Italian Mammut athletes tell their relationship with "their" element. Mattia Felicetti, Martin Dejori, Alex Walpoth, Filipp Schenk and Michael Piccolruaz will be the protagonists of a mini series, divided into four episodes, that will alsobe told through The Pill’s pages.

42

Snow, Ice and Rock intertwine and mix themselves into something more intricate: an intense emotion, a physical effort, a cry of joy, or, why not, a long silence. One last element is opposed to them, a call back to reality in the urban jungle, that thick fabric made of "you have to do this". Snow, Ice and Rock intertwine and mix themselves into something more intricate: an intense emotion, a physical effort, a cry of joy, or, why not, a long silence. One last element is opposed to them, a call back to reality in the urban jungle, that thick fabric made of "you have to do this". Yet, in all that chaos, it seems almost to see an harmonic art, made of colour and movement. At the moment being, unfortunately, it’s not possible to reveal more. The Italian Mammut athletes tell their relationship with "their" element. Mattia Felicetti, Martin Dejori, Alex Walpoth, Filipp Schenk and Michael Piccolruaz will be the protagonists of a mini series, divided into four episodes, that will also be told through The Pill’s pages

appear to the human eye as a white light, exactly like snow. Mattia himself says: "I started skiing when I was three and racing at six years old. The love for skiing in fresh snow started immediately, and it was so strong that my ski instructor at the time struggled to hold me down. My passion for the mountains evolved in other sports such as climbing and highline, but skiing has always been an inseparable part of myself ". What about you? Do you still feel the call of the nature?

White noise. A snowflake echoes like silence over silence. A thousand facets and the usual reaction of amazement. It fills the landscape, enriches my gaze and captures my mind. That silence slows down the time and makes it its own. I am a guest of the mountain: I knock on it and immerse myself in it. Energy and dust. I drown in those flakes, riding on their perfection. The first episode called "White Noise" is about Mattia Felicetti, ski instructor from Val di Fiemme and athlete of the Freeride World Qualifier. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that is Mattia himself that tells us about his element, merging into it, the same way that snowflakes melt into the water once they lay on it. Scientifically, the White Noise identifies a certain frequency of the audible, it is a very special frequency to connect with that lasts just a fraction of time and space, in the same way snow falls and paints the landscape as it wants. It is called white by analogy: a similar electromagnetic radiation within the visible spectrum would

Doxa Run Doxa is a danish brand that is gaining more and more attention on a international level since Highsnobiety, a world trendsetter in fashion, manufactures shoes, art and music, listed it in its “Under the radar” brands chart. Doxa places itself in the vibrant athleisure market presenting its modern but simple sportswear, which focuses a lot on the quality of the raw material. Among the many initiatives, there’s the collaboration with the Nairobi Kenswed Academy established by the Swedish NGO Global Relations together with the Kenyan marathoner Isaac Macharia. Let’s find out something more from John Hansen, Doxa’s founder.

INTERVIEW

BY

D AV I D E F I O R A S O

Hi John, let’s start from you and your passion for running. Running has always been part of my life, since when I was a kid and my mother followed me on her bike on countryside’s streets to keep the dogs away from me.As a teenager I felt the hunger to win in every national championship both on track and on road so I pushed my limits running for kilometres day after day. I still run a lot now but my mentality has changed during the years; I believed that injuries and aches happened only to weak runners and that the only thing that could have stopped my training were the 24 hours a day.

Scandinavian people are well known for their simple and basic design, so why running dressed in fluorescent clothes? I’ve been working in fashion industry for more than 15 years and I’ve been running since I was 10. It was about time to mix my lifestyle with my job. Where the name Doxa came from? In the beginning the name of the

brand was paradox. But it was too long and sounded wrong. After long hours of thinking I chose Doxa. Its four letters have a strong sounds, especially the X, and the name is pretty easy to recognise. The font is basic and expresses a lot of power; exactly what a sportswear brand needs.

Nowadays I know better my body and my limits. It’s not like everyday was race day anymore. That doesn’t mean that I’ve lost all my ambition. I don’t train anymore with a new personal best In mind. Today when I run I just try to find that “space” where time seems to freeze. There’s only me, my legs and the sound of my breath. Running is my therapy, it helps me to clean my mind and find new life’s pints of view.

How and how much has living in Scandinavia influenced you? One

of the most amazing thing of living in Scandinavia is how the changing of seasons influences the environment of any runners. The same route changes so much during the year: it goes from a frozen path light up by a cold sunbeams to the hot summer when the smell of freshly cut grass pushes your legs meter by meter. In these conditions, we need high-performance clothing, that protects you from wind, rain and cold winter, and keeps us dry and fast during the summer, while we try our personal best. It’s in these moments that I can not accept failures from the material I wear.

How was Doxa born? I felt like something was missing in the running scene: a cool brand with its roots in running but with a fashion look. Doxa was born two years ago; I was tired to always run with the same clothes and feel and see myself similar to rest of all runners.

45

46

Tell us about the collab with the swedish NGO global relations. A

Where do you see Doxa in 5 years? At the moment being the brand is distributed only in Scandinavian shops, but in five years Doxa will be available in shops all over Europe; the Asian market and the US are our next goal. There are some special projects ready to be launched in 2018 and I think that small capsule collactions or collaborations are a good way to keep the brand alive and give some signals to the big players in the sports market.

year and a half ago I became dad for the first time, I think you can imagine how this is a life changing fact. I started thinking about an idea, to help to make the difference in the world to make it better for my son and for my brand at the same time. It took me a month to find the perfect project but when I found the Nairobi Kenswed Academy I said: “that’s exactly what I want to support!”. The Swedish NGO Global Relations had founded the Kenswed Academy together with the Kenyan marathoner Isaac Macharia (PB 2:07:19). Here students come from difficult circumstances and are kept back from the slums through education and running. The first group of students has already been selected to become the brand's ambassadors; among these young guns there’s Joseph Waweru, a guy who has just qualified to take part in the Youth World Championship. This fall a second group of 20 runners will be selected. All our customers are supporting the next generation of World Champion Runners!

Our collab with Global Relations and The Kenswed Academy has evolved and Doxa hopes to sponsor similar projects in other countries as well.

“In any of these moments I won’t accept gear that doesn’t work as hard I do, and it needs to look cool at the same time. There is no reason not to look fly when you are flying!”

What are the news from the fall/winter collection? The new collection is born to make the difference in the streets. I have updated a lot of fabrics, with a preference towards mélange on the top and I’ve introduced a soft thermal tight for the colder days. There’s no clothing that comes out without that touch of "coolness" and with the oversize geometric print in the camouflage version I hope to satisfy the market.

Alex Honnold INTERVIEW

BY

ACHILLE MAURI

I started climbing when I was like maybe ten or eleven years old, my parents took me to a climbing gym and I just loved climbing and kept going ever since.

48

49

50

I don’t think there’s anyhing inherently wrong with soloing. I think that you just have to do it well and be very careful about.

Honnold Foundation. Can you tell more about this organisation? How was it born? What have been the threads that influenced you the most on this matter? The Honnold

Foundation basically came about because I was travelling more as a climber and seeing more of the need in the world but then at the same time I was becoming more professional and basically making more money, more than I needed. So it kinda came from that disconnected where I felt, I had more than I needed and I realised that there were a billion people on earth that had less than they need and so I started my foundation as a way of trying to bridge that, as a way of trying to do something positive in the world. Basically I’ve been supporting an environmental project that improves standards of living or to help people in poverty.

What are your parents’ jobs? My mother is retired now, she was a professor, she’s a French teacher, and my father also taught language but he died eleven years ago, no, like thirteen years ago, it’s crazy. My whole family is basically teachers. How did you approach climbing? I started

climbing when I was like maybe ten or eleven years old, my parents took me to a climbing gym and I just loved climbing and kept going ever since. So I started climbing indoors and then eventually I started going outdoors like as I did it more.

How do you live the social media world?

Maybe it’s just our feeling but nowadays at least many are connected to it also economically. I’ve never been that excited about social media, I don’t really love the self promotion type side of it I don’t love promoting things but I’ve sort of being given this big platform as a professional climber so I do sort of take advantage of it from time to time to push the things that I care about like pushing the work of my foundation or supporting environmental issues, speaking out about politics and things. I do feel like having fans on social media gives me this opportunity to try to make the world slightly a better place but in general I hate having to tag my sponsors. I pretty much don’t post things like that. Technically if you read my contract it said that I’m supposed to post some social media stuff but I just don’t really bother.

Generally I enjoy having a photographer around in some ways because they are always friends of mine and you are always sharing an experience with somebody hat you like. What about Jimmy Chin? Is he your friend? I mean, you were with him a lot so how is

the relationship with him in general? Jimmy Chin and I have travelled all over the world and we’ve climbed together a lot, he’s definitely a friend. He’s a very private man actually so we’re not very close friends, like I wouldn’t call him up on phone to talk about our feelings but obviously we shared a lot of experiences. Is there any song or soundtrack you would like to share with us? I don’t have any

Did ever happened that the sponsor asked

special soundtrack but I listen to mostly modern rock, kinda like Green Day or Offspring type of, the same sort of stuff I listened to when I was in high school.

for a climb that you didn’t really feel to

How does your girlfriend feel about your

do? In general sponsors don’t really ask for

climbs, they ask you to appear at events, to give presentations or to come to their office and talk about products so I’ve never had a sponsor asked me to climb something but I’ve had lot of sponsors who asked me to flying to a city and give a presentation. My climbing is always directed by myself, I climb the things that I’m excited about. Sistematic training or not? Do you practice a particular training chart or just go by in-

stinct? Over the years I have climbed more than trained but in the last year or two I’ve been trying to train a little bit more systematically, it’s still very far from a real regimented training program but I’m trying to incorporate more normal training. I don’t know if it’s working that well but, you know, none of us does. Is there any picture that you feel to describe? Has it ever happened that a photographer caused you any trouble during a free solo climb? Normally I’m only filming or taking photos on routes that I want to so I’ve chosen specific solos and going back after the fact and taking photos on them. I don’t really want a photographer or videographer to compromise the experience that I’m having on a solo so actually honestly I’m not sure if it ever happened that the photographer caused a problem for me.

51

relationship with danger? I think that it’s hard for my girlfriend to accept soloing and to accept the types of climbs that I’m doing but at the same time she trusts me and she understands process and she knows that I’m making the best decisions that I can. I mean, she knows that I care about living, that I want to survive and she understands that. But I think that it’s challenging for her and I know that that makes her afraid to think about the thing that I’m doing. We believe that you have a strong awareness about what you do and this forged your personality and made what are you know. If your son would ever tell you that he wants to do free solo what would you say? I wouldn’t have a problem with a child deciding to free solo but I would tell them to start slowly, be very careful, take their time. I don’t think there’s anyhing inherently wrong with soloing. I think that you just have to do it well and be very careful about. Since when you had in your mind to try to

free solo? I guess I did my first free solo when I was seventeen or eighteen, that was maybe almost fifteen years ago. Growing up in California I’ve always knew about soloing, there’s a big culture of soloing there, I knew all the stories, I cared about it and I thought it was cool. I’ve kinda always thought about it.

homas Monsorno takes us through his interesting photo project that took place under the Pieralongia Tower in Val Gardena. Janluca Kostner e Filip Schenk were with him as co-protagonists of this adventure. Janluca e Filip are two young and strong climbers, that’s why Mammut chose them as its athletes’s team ambassadors. After an indoor competitions career, Janluca is moving his interest more towards the classic and modern mountain climbing. Recently, at 18 years old and together with his team mate Titus Prinoth, he has conquered the Eger’s north wall. Filip, on the other hand, is a very strong outdoor climber and he is actually the Boulder youth World Champion. The skills of those two athletes and Thomas’ artistic talent has been mixed together and what came out was something amazing. Janluca himself tells us what he felt that night. “Pieralongia Tower is a rocky peak that seems to come out from the ground like a teeth. It’s an amazing place above the valley, and below that are the Odle mountains. The view was wonderful and that’s one of the main reason why we chose this place.” “Pieralongia has three possible climbing routes: you can go either on a simple trail or through the Vinatzer, on the southern wall. We went for the third option, the Schrott path, the hardest route on this peak, especially by night. The Schrott has been free solo climbed for the first time some years ago by Alex Walpoth and some parts of it are 8a. Our aim was just to feel what it was like climbing it at night. It was an interesting and intriguing experience at the same time. The dark modifies the rock geometries so much that the route is changed into something completely different from what you can experience during the day.” It wasn’t for sure the hardest climb ever for Filip but a new experience he was glad to accomplish. “I was pretty tired from the previous day in Marmolada” Janluca said “but at the same time I took advantage from knowing the alpine terrain better.”

Lost in Yunnan

KAPRIOL ADVENTURE

‡ There were an Italian, a French and a German guy. No pun intended, I just would like to tell the story of a trip to China to find new walls to climb. A trip that has turned into something else.

The Frenchman is Corrado Pesce, also known as "Korra", a great mountaineer born in Novara but who has been living in Chamonix for years. The German is one of the most complete competitive climbers in Europe, Roland "Rolo" Hemetzberger. And then there was me, Luca Schiera, a climber from Ragni di Lecco. The idea of a trip like this, completely new to us, was born under strange circumstances. Kapriol, a historic company from Lecco region and based in Civate, decided to link its brand to the mountain because of its 90th anniversary and find three promising young climbers to work with in order to create its own team and support an international expedition. Where? An unexplored area of Balagezong, in the Yunnan peninsula, near the Tibetan border. It is a mountain that reaches high altitudes, very technical, that seemed to us the perfect opportunity for a very diverse team of people. The goal was a limestone wall only seen in photo but never climbed. We were going to have three whole weeks to climb these mountains that exceed 5000 m, open new routes and complete the project. We left in September and met up at the Bangkok airport, before flying to Kunming. As soon as we landed, we immediately began to travel a lot throughout the south of the country. We felt a bit lost at the beginning and had some difficulties but in the end we managed to take a night train to the western region and arrived in Lijiang. Here we stopped for a couple of days to climb Shigu’s cliffs, an area that is fast developing and maybe the most promising we visited. We started climbing and, driving a few hours off road, we arrived in Shangri-La, a tourist area from where you can continue to the mountains. A few hours later, in Balagezong, we were welcomed in the worst way: it was raining hard and we were immediately recognised as climbers as soon as we entered the park. We had a long negotiation with the staff to obtain the permits. All that has been complicated by the language, but even they did not seem to understand each other very well between themselves.

“After a few hours we reached an agreement: we had permission to climb everything we wanted except for seven walls. The walls in total were exactly seven, so they we telling us to go away”

58

59

60

... We had no visa problems or missing permissions, since they were not necessary. None of us understood the reason why. Was the problem being so close to Tibet? Or the fact that these mountains were sacred? We had no way to reach them, we were unpopular either by the locals and by the authorities and the monsoon gave us no rest. We discussed for a while and then decided to change destination and started our long journey to discover different wonderful places.

“We had been kicked out. It wasn’t about permission, the locals made clear we were not welcomed in that park but we didn’t understand why, maybe the real problem was being close to Tibet”.

We went back to Shigu and changed our trip plan: we decided to visit all the main climbing areas in the country. First we left for the great arch of Getu, an impressive limestone formation a few miles away. In about ten days we explored its different parts already rigged and climbed a surreal route on the vault of a natural cave over 50 meters high. “We did some sports routes until grade 8a that went up for all the overhanging arch” We continued our journey to the north and arrived in Zhangjiajie, famous for its sandstone pinnacles, but the scenario was similar to the one of Balagezong: heavy rain and prohibitions everywhere. In the meantime Achille Mauri joined us to take some pictures. Despite a broken drone, some failed tentatives, a night spent on the floor of a station and countless linguistic difficulties, Achille still seemed to enjoy our company. Finally, after a journey of almost 2 thousand kilometres, we arrived in Yangshuo, perhaps the most important area of all Asia with the largest climbing site in the country, characterised by rocky mountains covered with vegetation rising up between rice fields. The view was beautiful, the climbing routes endless and the city was very touristic. The only negative thing was the unbearable heat and the humidity. We used to go out early in the morning, mainly climbing the same cliffs and following always the same routes. The go back in the evening through the rice fields, trying not to worry too much about the snakes and trying to adjust to such a different climate for people used to the Alps. We ended this trip, completely different from what we had thought, with the last train to Kunming. This expedition did not bring us where we wanted although it had an unexpected but pleasant twist: we had the chance to travel, to get to know and relate to the mountains, to the climbing sites of the country and to its people.

61

“ There were snakes everywhere but we were ready for them. The mountains were full of vegetation but some parts were free of it and the rocks were amazing ”.

Hello Mathäus. Where you come from exactly? I’m from

Kitzbühel (Tyrol) which is situated in the western Part of Austria. It’s a country which is dominated by the mountains (the highest one is the Wildspitze with more than 3700 m in altitude). I really like the Tyrolean because of their directness and their sociability. I especially appreciate the standard of living here in Tyrol.

Oh yeah, that was great. My girlfriend and I just arrived at home from a journey to Asia. We decided spontaneously to make a short trip into the Dolomites. The weather forecast reported not the best weather but finally we had such a luck. We went up from Passo Falzarego to Lagazuoi and initially it was super cold and windy. But the amazing sunset compensated for everything.

When the photography began to become important in your

Alleghe, Misurina, Val Badia & Garda Lake. you come often

life? I’m doing photography since 3-4 years with a camera,

to Italy? It’s true I’m in love with Italy. The Dolomites are a paradise for photographers with so much beautiful areas. For me personally are all these regions attractive which are not that popular. It’s a big dream of mine traveling through Italy with a minivan and see some really nice places (for examples skiing Corno Grande, etc.). I also like the south part of Italy, maybe we’re flying to Sicily this year for some adventures. The Italian people are so friendly and authentic ,that’s what I really esteem. Italy is for sure one of the most beautiful and varied countries worldwide.

but the passion began earlier. I started taking pictures with a mobile phone (the quality was really bad). It was not uncommon that I grabbed my bike at 3 a.m. in the morning and cycled on a mountain for sunrise. By the way sunrise, I’m having a preference for sunrise and sunset photography because I like to play with the light. During the day the light is often too bright and powerful, but it always depends on the conditions and what you want. My first reflex camera was a Canon EOS 60D, later I bought a EOS 80D and currently I’m working with a Canon 5D Mark4. The main lenses I use are a Canon 16-35mm and a 70-200mm telephoto lense.

Alex Fuchs, Johannes Hulsch, Florian Wenzel, Andrè Alexander or the German Roamers. Igers with tens of thousands of followers. Feel part of it?

Your nickname on instagram is "mountain_lover". a declaration of love towards the mountains.

My love for the mountains was born pretty early. I grew up in a great surrounding full of mountains, so I often hiked with my family in my local mountains when I was a child. In winter we always went skiing, so I spent a big part of my childhood outdoors. Nowadays I prefer being off-piste and doing ski mountaineering in the winter. In summer I love biking, climbing or hiking (particularly on some higher mountains)

My love for the mountains was born pretty early. I grew up in a great surrounding full of mountains, so I often hiked with my family in my local mountains when I was a child. In winter we always went skiing, so I spent a big part of my childhood outdoors.

I spent a weekend with Alex and André in Bavaria last year. It was so much fun. That's one of the cool things about Instagram - you met so many nice people. But I think it’s crucial to don’t focus to much on Instagram because you don’t know if this app will still exist in 3,4 years. It is more important that you do what you like and don’t copy things from other guys on Instagram. Who inspires you most? That’s a

difficult question. I think I often get my inspiration in photography when I see images, and think about how would I do this. How can I bring my own style into it or how do I think it’s a good composition. In the topic mountaineering I really estimate the performance and achievement of some „crazy guys“ near me hometown in the 1960s/70s who made first ascents in my home-mountains.

What sensation do you try when you are on the top of a

mountain? It is always a pleasure being outdoors. When I reach a top of a mountains it’s such a beautiful moment. First of all you’re mostly exhausted (haa haa), but there are feelings like independence, freedom and pure happiness. Though the best of it is to share it with people you like. When you’re sitting down at the summit, having a „Jausn“ (Tyrolean for snack) and enjoying the view. Every successful reach to the top of a mountain has his own little story and characteristics.

we have a weekend to spend in Tirol. what can you recommend? Although Tyrol is a pretty small place on the global

map, there are so many things to do. First of all it depends of the season you’re coming. In winter everybody is fanatic in skiing, snowboarding, sledding and so on. In the summer months hiking, biking, climbing or just chilling at one of our beautiful lakes are possibilities. Furthermore I could recommend the fantastic cuisine. For all who are interested in culture, Tyrol has also lots of things to provide. Mountains, sports, tradition and modernity are perfectly combined. A nice long weekend could probably be in the Zillertal, with lots of skiing, sleeping in a mountain hut, enjoying good food and having fun.

Between your shots, there are many snow landscapes. do

you have a preaching for the cold season? I couldn’t say that I like winter more than summer but it’s true, winter is a great season, especially in Tyrol. Probably one of the main attractions in winter is the way down. Undoubtedly there is not much better than riding down a mountain with lots of powder snow. There is an image on your profile in which you write: "probably my favorite panorama in 2017". in that photo you can

see the Pelmo and Lastoi de Formin, my favorite mountain.

Say yes to adventure: Alaska

Alaska, ... that country of the far north, seen and heard in videos and movies, the common imaginary makes us think of a land only made of cold, frost, ice and hostility, but in reality Alaska is much more than that and what we can say from our experience is that Alaska is a country, which may seem lost and isolated, but in reality has a lot to teach.

I

’ve been thinking a lot about how to describe this country in one word, it wasn’t easy, but I think what impressed me the most is that Alaska is huge, powerful, a new definition of space. Space not meant only as a dimension, even if it’s unlimited (just think that it has an extension of more than 1.7 million square kilometres and it could contain Italy 6 times). Alaska is power, it’s strength and immensity thanks to its rough, harsh, simple but sincere nature. Alaska is strong in its colours, its borders, its heights and its lengths, its limits, its raw materials, its animals, its shapes and dimensions.

listening to the stories of the families who live in the middle of stretches of woods and mines without ever having seen a country other than that, but with a story to tell that is passed on through generations, from listening to rangers explaining, with amused enthusiasm, that if you’ll ever meet a bear you must not run away. We’ve left the "amenities" of the city of Anchorage and we have began the inner part of our journey along the 134 miles of the old highway that leads to Denali, to try to reach the impressive McKinley, the highest peak in North America with its 6,190 meters high, and when someone tells you that you can only visit it for 5 days a year, it is at that moment that you understand how little you are in front of the greatness of nature. The smartest yet more superficial can not win here, the attention to the nature is fundamental, not to win but to survive, here you can not afford to underestimate the clouds, the changes of the wind and temperature, the rising or setting of the sun. We’ve just accepted this higher rule, respecting bears, moose and wolves and their spaces,

Our gaze got lost in the landscapes without borders, in the uncontaminated nature that surrounded us on 360°, its mountain ranges and huge glaciers are the lines that define the horizon. And it is right there, in the middle of nowhere, that you realise how much that nothingness can fill the whole, the conscience of all this was born from the motion, from unplanned movements between desolate and dirt roads, from free camping to backpacking in parks, from

One of Etna’s peculiarities is that it’s not surrounded by mountains who can compete in height: when you are up here you're eyes have no boundaries... I just cant wait to go down. Right now I would just love to be sit at a table of Davide’s restaurant, with the sea in front of me and some crispy fish fry in my plate. But the reality is that we are 3300m higher, lashed by a cold wind almost in a complete darkness. The sun already left us diving in a sea of clouds after a stunning pink sunset. One of Etna’s peculiarities is that it’s not surrounded by mountains who can compete in height: when you are up here you can see the whole Sicily on the west side, while on the east there’s the Strait of Messina and the coasts of Calabria; looking north instead you can get the feeling of almost touching that wonderful group of Islands called Eolie.

now understand how, in ancient times, a magical place like Etna had inspired stories of epic battles between supernatural beings. According to some myth, Etna has not always been a volcano. Once upon a time, Encelado, the greatest of all giants, decided to overtake Jupiter and dominate the world. However, to accomplish this, he would have to reach the sky, home of the Gods. Therefore he decided to build, with the help of his giant brothers, a sort of ladder stacking all the mountains of the planet on the top of each other. Jupiter, enraged by his arrogance, threw a bolt of lightning at the giants that ignited the whole sky, blinding these rebels and causing them to fall back on the earth. Encelado was buried under the Etna, he was wounded and couldn’t move the mountain. Furious, he began to throw flames from his chest that went up to the summit of the volcano.

It was a never-ending day! My friend Eric and I left home at 3am flying from Bergamo to Catania, then reached the Rifugio Sapienza by car, exactly where tarmac roads leave place to nature. We met Davide on the ski slope. He is an excellent skier and knows the volcano very well, you can say it’s his home. After some off-piste downhills to "taste" the Sicilian snow we had aimed directly at the summit of the craters with the idea of enjoying the sunset from up there.

We stayed there for a few more minutes to observe the impressive spectacle of the fury of the giant trapped down there. The red glow of the volcano brightened us as we took the skins off. Then we went down. The headlamp lighted up only a few meters in front of us. The slope was We had the feeling We faced the last snow-free meters with frozen and the wind had shaped the snow to be on another planet skis on our shoulders, trudging through in countless flakes: it was difficult to conup there or even to be black ash to the top of the highest crater. trol the skis, due to the numerous vibraAt certain times, while we were climbing, tions. I felt comfortable in this it can happen sometimes that, between kind of cave that protected from the wind. ashes, the volcano erupts smaller and bigger stones into the air. On I took off my skis and climbed back up in the best I could until finding Mount Etna you can hear the sounds coming directly from the deep myself standing on the slope again. Further down to the left I could bowels of the volcano mixed with the usual noises of the climbing see the front lights of Eric and Davide, obviously they hd found an produced by the wind and the skins that crawl on the snow. The easier way to go down. I hurried up to catch them. The following fumes and the gas pushed by the wind enveloped us and made day we decided to explore on skis the Valle del Bove. What was in phitheater with steep slopes and amazing snow, certainly one of front of us was an unreal and literally breathtaking scene: the unthe most evocative places of the volcano. We had the feeling to be on another planet up and Taormina and was created about 65.000 years ago. The bottom there or even to be taken back until the dawn of time. We looked is almost flat and paved with lava fields of ancient eruptions, it is down into one of the many craters that continuously puffed insurrounded by walls of thousand meters high cut by long canals: candescent gas. We had a lot of to talk to each other, the wind stole our words and the powerful fun passing through the volcanic pinnacles. We went down whesound of the volcano stood above our voices. It was so strange, we re we were forced to find the best way to get out of a labyrinth of were deep in a chaos of infinite elements and forces and yet there thick holm oak, larch and beech trees, an unusual environment was an extreme sense of peace. We felt as we were just strangers for those who are used to skiing on the Alps. n January 9th I received a message on Instagram from patrick.schwiembacher.photo: "Hi Enrico. Did Joey already tell you something about the shooting? Denis asked me for your size, M or L? And what about the shoe size? "I answered immediately: "Hello Patrick! Yes, he told me... for the shoes a 39.5 or 40 size and a 43 one too. Size M or L if the clothes are tight. Denis Piccolo? "He replied: "Yes, Denis Piccolo asked me for the photos”.

meet for a coffee on Thursday at 8 AM and spontaneously decide the location based on the weather. Patrick and Alex were extremely punctual while Joey and I were not! Anyway we found ourselves sitting in front of three cappuccinos and a long coffee trying to find the best location. We thought about all the possible cliffs based on the required shots and the exposure of the spot while constantly looking at the sky, which was becoming more and more grey up to the north. Excluding South Tyrol we decided to drive towards Sarche, stopping for a bit at Lunelli’s, that between a "jawohl" and some nice attempt to speak German, made us four baguettes with local meats and cheese.

Thinking about the last time I shoot photos with Denis makes me smile, I think it was 6 or 7 years ago and certainly the shooting was not about climbing. Snowboards’ shooting were common at that time and as an athlete I had to be present at every event and appear in a lot of photos and videos. From the moment I started climbing, however, I have never taken part in a photoshoot so I immediately accepted the proposal, perhaps a bit nostalgic of the good old days.

We soon reached our destination. Bassilandia, a beautiful place in the valley of the lakes dedicated to Roberto Bassi and known for its beautiful routes and its view in front of the Toblino lake. We chose to shoot on a working day so we were lucky and found almost no one on the cliff. With a cloudless sky, the rest of the day passed fast between one change of clothing and the other. At 4 PM, with the last rays of sunlight, we finished our shooting with all the photos that Patrick and the publisher needed, realising that the days were finally getting longer.

On the following day Patrick created a group on WhatsApp called "Shooting the Pill", the first idea was to reach Val Venosta on Sunday, January 14th. But that idea unfortunately did not last long due to bad weather and other logistical details. We had little choice: our deadline was set for the 19th and the only sunny day was Thursday the 18th. We followed the motto “make it or break it" and decided to

GIAN MARIA CARLO PIUTTI I R E N E C A M B A C U RTA CESARE ILLENGO

Trail running gives us the freedom to find ourselves, our essence, it helps us to feel ourselves without restrictions, without the normal daily life that imposes pre-established times and spaces. Hi guys, first of all let’s tell something about you. We are Gian Maria and Irene, around 30 years old, both born and raised in the center of Turin and we lived, studied and worked between its busy streets. We were tired of the usual and boring routine and began to desire to find a more real and simpler dimension that could represent us better. I’ve always been passionate about outdoor sports, I’ve spent my childhood riding with my mountain bike on the long and wide trails of the hill (that was my favourite hobby and gave the name to our group), getting to know all its most hidden parts when I was 20.

When and why did you decide to create a group? Some of our friends who were used to run immediately joined us, forming in 2012 "the core” of what will become the founding group of the Trails of the Hill, that became officially an ASD in 2016. Our fear was that people would not understand this type of sport, made of fatigue, sacrifice, long hours of training and many climbs. But this passion has grown fast, it is a group sport really out of the box and very wild that spread anywhere. What is your mission? Our mission has always been the

same: living the trail as fun, as discovering nature, something exciting and not the usual concept of running with stopwatches and time tables. Our training are thought to end the day in a fun way.

I’m pretty shy, I like to stay all by myself sometimes, in absolute silence, isolating myself from the rest of the world to free my mind. Irene, however, is simple, sociable, dynamic and always smiling, she loves everything that is travel, discovery, freedom and emotion.

What kind of runners are part of your group? In our group

there are several types of people: we have runners from 20 to 55 years old, sometimes they aren’t from here but they just happened to live in Turin for work or study for some time. There are no differences between us, we’ve got only one passion that unites us. We have shared many experiences: group races, training weekends in the mountain or at the sea, landscapes that filled our eyes and heart, laughter that brightened up our run.

We linked our passions: sport, nature and the desire to discover gave birth to our idea of trail. Trail running gives us the freedom to find ourselves, our essence, it helps us to feel ourselves without restriction, without the normal daily life that imposes pre-established times and spaces. This has become a necessity very soon, it became our lifestyle and now it’s difficult to imagine ourselves without it.

93

The group is very close and has given birth to solid friendships. We often have dinner together after the training. We are very happy to see that this wonderful group was born from our shared trail’s passion, we believe in important values such as friendship, respect, mutual help, sharing moments of fatigue and sacrifice especially during the preparation of the most demanding trails. What kind of runners usually approach the "Trails of the Hill"? Each

of us has approached this sport and the group of theTrails of the Hill for several reasons: some of them wanted to get fit, others wanted to get rid of the stress of everyday’s life, there were people that just loved endurance sports and other ones, living all day between four walls, wanted to feel free in the woods, free from social conditioning and owners of themselves. We can almost define it as a "therapeutic" group. “Guys, I would be lost without you! You saved me from depression, I’ve been looking for something like this group for a long time, something that could make me feel alive again!” said Cristiano. “When I’m old, I will tell my nephews of this running group I was in as a kid” said Miquel. He usually travels the world for work but he said that he has never found such a beautiful, healthy and familiar group like ours. We are so happy to have created this association, the love and the happiness that come from the people who are part of it really repays us the most.

You’ve just adopted a dog named "Achille". He has an incredible story, can you tell me a little about that? Another important point of our phi-

losophy is that sport should be for everyone: there are so many organised excursions that you can share with your family. The weekend is always an opportunity to see each other, train together and also involve our families, children and animal friends! Talking about that, let me introduce you Achille, our greyhound dog! We adopted it a month ago from an Irish shelter to give it a new life and it is now our companion of adventures in the woods. Achille, just like us, does not particularly like the city and prefers the quiet of the woods and the sight of some possible prey! Now Achilles is becoming familiar with the trails and it’s going to run with us very soon!

It seems a nice way to live and forget about working problems. This is our

way of life, our greatest passion: during the year we organise our trainings and on holiday we try to discover unknown places, always running! Trail clothing is always present in our travels, there is always some unknown path to discover, especially in the north, since Irene is a great lover of Nordic landscapes.

Future projects? We would like to continue to promote the trail on an Italian level, promoting small-trail vacations to train, to travel and to admire our beautiful landscapes! This is how we live the outdoors: it’s freedom, it’s a dynamic and simple lifestyle, it’s living in contact with nature. It’s what most represents us, and the Trails of the Hill is what we are.

94

We are very happy to see that this wonderful group was born from our shared trail’s passion, we believe in important values such as friendship, respect, mutual help, sharing moments of fatigue and sacrifice especially during the preparation of the most demanding trails.

The Gore-Tex membrane ensures absolutely waterproof and highly breathable, its use does not only concern trail running, it is also ideal for static use with snowshoes. The fit is even more immediate and comfortable thanks to the exclusive La Sportiva’s Easy system.

S CA R PA SCARPA ATOM SL GT X

very time I exit from Porta Garibaldi’s subway, I am enchanted by the skyscrapers in Piazza Gae Aulenti. I have the feeling to have fallen into a city of the future. I feel as if I’ve crossed a portal and found myself in London or Berlin or New York. It seems like my mental skyline has been blurred. As if someone suddenly woke me up after a long journey. It's a beautiful sight. It took a long time, but even Milano managed to give life to its first globalised neighborhood. Although running in the centre full of historical stratifications, churches, monuments, streets with a romantic look, has another taste, another rhythm, I feel home also in these non-places. It seems like my mind has more space to think about the future.

and draw a continuous frantic flow of the time like the most complicated paradigm of Escher. Running here seems to have a new taste, there’s no space for sweat and effort, but only technology mixed with style, to move in that tireless chaos that you can find in every single street of Milano. There is no space to breath, you are pushed by an endless sprint to avoid to be overwhelmed. Running to avoid to be drown in a different time, where time is both endless and already passed. Stopping is difficult. Impossible. Your shelters are the most hidden corners along the course, where there is no space for cars, scooters and trams. Where the old Milano’s Isola seems to have its deeper and non erternal roots. Where the shadows lengthen to an afternoon that goes already towards sunset. The sounds become music and give other rhythm to the legs. Urban-runner is born here. This is where a new world to explore begins.

ASICS G E L- N I M BU S 2 0

Asics celebrates the twenty years of GEL-Nimbus with the lightest model ever of its most iconic shoe, expression of the perfect balance between protection, comfort and performance. The upper reminds the light and tapered style of the previous version, but introduces the new Gradient Jacquard Mesh, a fabric created with a softer and more adaptable structure to the shape of the foot. The fitting consistency is guaranteed by thin 3D printed overlays that wrap and support the foot during the run. The combination of the FlyteFoam midsole with GEL technology, on the other hand, gives to the shoe a more softness and a great feeling of lightness, with a much higher and more stable cushion. The men version is about 350 gr while the women one weighs 250 gr, built with the Plus 3 and Gender Specific Cushoning, geometries and technologies expressly designed to adapt to the specifics of the women. It’s no surprise that the drop declared for the male version is 10 mm, while for women it’s 13 mm. GEL-Nimbus 20 returns: the perfect shoe for everyday training for the neutral runner that tries every kind of experience.

NEW BALANCE FRESH FOAM LAZR HYPOSKIN

Designed to offer the most versatility, the Under Urmor UA Charged Bandit 3 Digi is a shoe designed to run for kilometres, without sacrificing looks and created to give new sensations. The upper wraps the foot providing a breathable and flexible support and with the Charged Cushioning insole (a double layer of compression molded foam) ensures you a perfect cushioning and an increased responsiveness and durability. The innovative UA SpeedForm structure is perfectly modelled on the foot with a precise fit, avoiding any possible distraction, balanced by the external buttress that gives more support and stability in the back. The weight is only 260 gr and is guaranteed by the special rubber sole compound that protects the high impact areas and, thanks to the anatomical grooves, offers adequate flexibility in the essential points. A different shoe for those who still don’t know their limits.

UNDER ARMOUR CHARGED BANDIT 3 DIGI

A new concept of a running shoe? An evolution of the training shoe? A new sneaker model? The New Balance Fresh Foam Lazr Sport is all three things at the same time. The new bet of the Boston brand reintroduces a totally radical concept in the running universe, presenting an hybrid mix of training shoes for running or going to the gym. But also to dress casual. The main innovation is the creation of the first laser-engraved Fresh Foam midsole, which allows the shoe to acquire more comfort and flexibility (6 mm drop) thanks to the network of precise and deep grooves along the entire length of the midsole, combined with a solid but light rubber sole, which contributes a better traction and a grip on all types of terrain. The New Balance Fresh Foam Lazr Sport is also characterised by an elastic and soft wraparound slip-on, which guarantees freedom of movement to the instep making each stride lighter and smoother. It’s surprising that the new sports mesh upper does not feature the classic N, the unmistakable symbol of New Balance, but Fresh Foam Lazr Sport is a different shoe, designed for the neutral runner who moves his first step into the running world or for those who love going the gym and just a run outdoor sometimes. With the addition of that touch of distinct elegance. 105

the smallest system of the UNESCO Dolomites World Heritage. The natural monument is a tight valley between the mountain Schรถnrast and the Jochgrimm and lies in the municipality of Aldein.

The deep canyon is the result of erosion of the volcanic rock layers through

the Bletterbach. Since the last ice age about 18,000 years ago, it was estimated that more than ten billion tons of rock material have been transported to the Adige Valley solely due to the power of water, wind, and weather.

And so the small, inconspicuous brook has buried itself at a distance of about 8 kilometers to 400 meters deep into different geologicalages.

In addition to the Canyon de Araza in the Ordesa National Park in the Spanish Pyrenees, the Bletterbach canyon is considered the second such formation in Europe, which in a sense can be compared to the Grand Canyon in North America. The spring bed is interrupted in at least four places by up to several dozen meters high waterfalls. For climbers, the Bletterbach gorge with the three sectors Taubeneck, Butterloch and Gorz offers a great "way of playing" with incredible ice climbing potential for all ability levels during wintertime.

Steep rock faces, waterfalls, magnificent colors, fossil plant remains, and

traces of minerals made the hike through the Geopark a special experience.

« Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty if only we have the eyes to see them» - John Ruskin

Everyone of us comes from nature and is part of it. Nature offers us examples of how precious life is, makes us receptive and enriches our senses. Contemplating the landscape of existence as we proceed along the way is part of our appreciation. And the more we look around, the more we know what inspires us, what we really like. Nature has its own way to connect us with the present and with our body, sometimes it helps us to contemplate, often it helps us out to forget our worries and go back to what’s really important.
