"The snow and its magnificent silence. There’s nothing else worth of the name of silence, just the snow on the roof and on the ground." Erri De Luca, Il peso della farfalla
A scent of undergrowth coming from the humid earth, dotted with heroic primroses and patches of frozen snow. The barks are shining and the river that flows next to the old stavolo is full of rain. Big flakes of snow fall on top of everything. Two seasons are meating, a spring that is late to come. We are immersed into the clouds, in the muffled silence that only this environment can give, where white and black are combined in infi nite shades of gray. The mixture of scents and the smell that comes with the April’s snow is a rare gift these days. It provides a spontaneous and direct listening to the elements, taking all the worries about our sick ecosystem away for a moment. We try as much as possible to look like silent creatures, to grasp the life that is breathed here. It is as if nature reassigns us a place, a value, while considering us neither more nor less important than the trunk on which we are sat. This thought is consoling, even if we wear polyester and a Autogrill breakfast is digested in our stomach. In order to not lose contact with nature, we must aspire to some form of wildness, to an approach that is as more spontaneous as possible, that can lead us back to being part of a whole, of a place that, although largely influenced by men, is still capable to welcome us and to convey a sense of authenticity. We have reached our destination so we put back the skins in our bagpacks. The climb gave us time to reflect and, as the snow continues to fall, we realize that we are happy. Nature gives us a sense of truth so profound that we are refreshed of all the odds of the week. This snow, for us, is a special gift, to which we are traditionally linked. Will spring come back?

S A L E WA I R O N F LY – A M E TA C H A L L E N G E A challenge between sky and earth, in the amazing set of the Lombardy and Piedmont’s Alps and Prealps. It is the first edition of Salewa Ironfly, the hike & fly race, aka a mountain running and paragliding flight, organized by the Parapendio Club Scurbatt with Salewa as the main sponsor,
scheduled from 12th to 19th of May. A 458 kilometer long competition (starting from the lakeside of Lecco and arriving in Suello) following an set itinerary that has to be finished in the ma-
ximum time of 1 week, with 4 obligatory stops on Monte Cornizzolo (LC), Macugnaga (VCO), Bormio (SO ) and Passo della Presolana (BG).
R E I E M EC B OYC OT T V I STA On the wave of the Parkland tragedy, in Florida, and following the growing debate on arms control in the United States, REI and Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) have decided to suspend future orders from brands of the Vista Outdoor group such as Camelbak, Bell, Bushnell, Bollé, Giro and
Camp Chef. Driven by the consumers pressures, the two outdoor retail giants have taken this
decision because of the many arms and ammunition manufacturers the Farmington company has in its brand portfolio. A complex dispute that awaits clarification.
N E W G O R E I N N OVAT I O N C E N T E R I N T H E S I L I C O N VA L L E Y Gore presented its expansion in the Silicon Valley with the opening of a laboratory and space for participated innovation of more than 1000 square meters. Focused on helping startups to achieve
large-scale innovations, the Gore Innovation Center in Santa Clara will combine Gore's expertise in materials science with innovative companies that have ideas that can revolutionize industries
such as aerospace, automotive, digital devices for health, consumer electronics and materials. It will also host events to encourage technological innovation and collaboration in the Silicon Valley.
LAFUMA GROUP IS BACK IN THE GAME The Lafuma group, which also includes the Eider, Millet and Oxbow brands, has reaped the benefits of a restructuring started with a return to profits, despite a contraction in turnover. In 2017
the Annecy-based group saw its operating result grow by 67.7%, recording a net profit of 5.4 mil-
lion euros (against the loss of 1.2 in 2016). Lafuma had encountered persistent difficulties in key
markets, in addition to the impact of the restructuring initiated under the impulse of the Russian shareholder Calida. The total turnover decreased by 3.9% to 160 million euros, with the brands Lafuma, Miller and Eider contributing with 95.7 million.
WHICH FUTURE FOR IBEX? At the beginning of 2018, with a press release on its website, Ted Manning, CEO of Ibex Outdoor Clothing, announced the end of an adventure lasting 20 years. A few weeks ago, the Vermont company was bought by Flour Fund. The sale price has not been disclosed, but the New York investment group has acquired all intellectual property and the remaining assets. What will happen to
this brand loved for its authenticity and quality, which brought merino wool back to the attention of outdoor enthusiasts? It is not clear yet, but according to Burlington Free Press, the new owners
will further develop the business model for consumers and may introduce a licensing program for other apparel manufacturers. 8
THE dAm TRUTH (ALL dAMS ARE dIRTY)
DAMS AND DIVERSIONS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
WE NEED HEALTHY RIVERS Accessible fresh water constitutes less than 1% of the world’s total water supply and needs protection to help sustain all life.
Dams block rivers and impound water in reservoirs. Diversions can draw large amounts of water from a river, leaving the existing riverbed dry. Both are devastating to ecosystems and the people who live within them.
CLEAN, GREEN HYDROPOWER DAMS ARE A MYTH Hydropower is the only “renewable” energy source sending species to extinction, displacing people globally, and contributing to climate change.
DAMS KILL FISH AND WILDLIFE
DAMS HARM ECOSYSTEMS AND EXACERBATE CLIMATE CHANGE
Dams have contributed to an average freshwater wildlife population decline of 81% since 1970, with some species even sent to extinction.
Dams and river-draining diversions cause greenhouse gas emissions and make humans, ecosystems and species less able to adapt to a changing climate.

SCOTT LAUNCHES A MODEL OF E-COMMERCE INTEGRATED WITH DEALERS In a moment of great dynamism of the market, Scott has presented its e-commerce platform that
will work in parallel with the existing sales network; a model of integrated commerce in which the dealer is at the center of the business. Through the online purchase and collection in store, the final customer will be able to take advantage of the services and of the high professionalism provided by the retailers. A new form of sale aimed at acquiring new customers, deriving from a
new catchment area, and that can lead to the loyalty to the shopkeeper and to the Scott brand. The final customer has a guaranteed immediate availability (24h on 24) of all products.
MELLOBLOCCO 2018? YES BUT IN SWITZERLAND The 2018 edition of Melloblocco will take place in Switzerland as part of the MBB Street Boulder. The famous international bouldering meeting brand was lent, only this year, to the event that will take place in Cresciano, Switzerland. From the 3rd to the 6th of May there will be a 4 days
of climbing on the Ticinese blocks, under the direction of the Melloblocco team, with VIP events taking place in a tensile structure in the center of Lugano. However many people will find difficult to imagine Melloblocco without its natural cradle. This announcement is wreaking havoc about the future of the meeting and it’s creating confusion among the thousands of “accustomed” ones of the blocks of Valmasino.
V F C O R P O R AT I O N P U R C H A S E S A LT R A R U N N I N G VF Corporation, head company of Vans, Timberland, The North Face and Reef brands, after acquiring Dickies and Icebreaker, announced the purchase of Altra, a road and trail running footwear
company. The terms of the agreement with the former owner of Altra, ICON Health and Fitness,
have not been released, however VF Corp. affirms that the acquisition indicates the evolution of its
portfolio towards more and more outdoor brands in a global market that represents massive future growth. Sold in 55 countries through over 1,600 specialist stores, in the last 12 months the Altra brand generated around 50 million in revenues.
TA M A R A LU N G E R J O I N S CA M P After lots of challenges with Simone Moro, who has always been a CAMP testimonial, also Tamara Lunger became part of the Premana team. "This is an important new start we are very happy of
for both the alpine level of Tamara as well as her human being. Just like her, we were born and decided to stay in the mountains, we are the bearers of a culture and a passion that go beyond the
single sport thing". Tamara's latest adventure, the Alpine ski mountaineering journey from east
to west (almost 2,000km with 85,000m in altitude), stands out into a series of similar projects and represents the best possible way to inaugurate a special partnership.
F R I E D R I C H S H A F E N W I L L H AV E A N E W O U T D O O R P L AT F O R M In an internal voting process, the majority of the members of the European Outdoor Group (EOG)
opted for the transfer of the OutDoor Show in Munich starting from 2019. The 25th edition of
OutDoor, scheduled from 17th to 20th of June 2018 , will therefore be the last organized by the Friedrichshafen Fair under the current partnership with EOG. In full autonomy, and with the sup-
port of numerous prominent representatives, the fair organizers are already working on the future concept of the event to keep offering the sector its own home on Lake Constance.

Here comes the need to find a new form of livelihood and the idea to create a crowdfunding project that takes its name from the association itself. On this occasion La Sportiva was awarded the Radical Green Prize reserved for Italian companies that daily work in the development of sustainable products and processes. It was an opportunity to listen to entrepreneurs’ speeches about their experience and about how the environmental challenge turns into processes of industrial culture and technological innovation. “To be sustainable is a competitive advantage that we operationally translate into different productive choices, practices and behaviours towards all of our stakeholders," said Lorenzo Delladio, CEO and president of La Sportiva.

The start-up most voted by the public of the Global Change Award 2018 was Agroloop Biofibre, which is a plant tissue derived from agricultural waste destined for disposal (flax seeds, bananas, sugar cane or pineapples). Among the more than two thousand candidates submitted to the jury of experts, four others projects have distinguished themselves for their potential ability to accelerate the process of fashion renewal: between these there were Regenerators (that through the use of a particular eco-friendly chemical agent proposes a solution to separate polyester from cotton in mixed fabrics making them recyclable) and Algae Apparel (which has projected a new technology to produce fibers and tinctures with algae).

Columbia meeting. Peeking at its secrets. The parents of our super active 90-year-old president Gert Boyle escaped from the Nazi occupied Germany in 1938 and bought a small hat company after their arriving in Portland that was named Columbia Hat Company, after the river near their new home. Later, Gert's husband started to run the company, but when he died, Gert took control, from housewife to manager, within a night. Today her son, Tim Boyle, is our president and CEO. Colombia Sportswear owns 4 brands: Columbia, Mountain Hardware, Prana and Sorel.
Columbia is made up of real people who are passionate about outdoor life, just like our consumers. What is your brand’s philosophy? Columbia is made up of real people who are passionate about outdoor life, just like our consumers. We distribute our products all over the world but we are based in the great Pacific Northwest, where majestic forests frame volcanic mountains and rugged coasts. And this is where we hike, ride, fish, hunt, climb, camp, play golf, paddle, run and enjoy the fresh air with friends. Those are the places and climatic conditions that allow us to test in person all the patented and recognized technologies of Columbia, studied and created to allow everyone to enjoy for a longer time the outdoor activities. A technology like Outdry Extreme is applied to the suits of the six national teams of Free Style that we sponsored during the recent Olympic Winter Games in South Korea: U.S., Canada, Belarus, Ukraine, Brazil and Kazakhstan. Outdry Extreme makes clothes waterproof and breathable, turning the waterproofing concept upside down by applying, unlike other systems on the market, the waterproof and resistant layer on the outside and the soft fabric that keeps the sweat away inside.
Tim Boyle, president and CEO of Columbia Sportswear Company, received the award during the gala on January 30th, He talked about a very special woman, who has gone through numerous obstacles that she has been able to face and overcome with great strength and courage, bringing Columbia Sportswear to be the world famous company that it is today. In which country are you stronger? We are very strong in the United States but the greatest growth is currently in Europe. Have you planned any special initiatives in Europe? Our mission is to allow people to enjoy outdoor life for longer times, which is why we decided to work with the UK National Parks. It’s a 5 year partnership and we will dress the almost 2000 employees and 300 rangers who daily take care of conservation and improvement of the parks’ natural beauty and help to guide visitors and schools in the 15 parks that host about 100 million people every year. We’re also continuing our role as Presenting Partner with the UTMB (ultra trail mont blanc). Our goal is to make the many people attending the event, even those who do not participate in the competitions, feel not just as spectators but as a part of the the event itself.
Can you tell me something more about the award that was given to the Columbia founder, the Ispo Cup? Gert Boyle was honored by Ispo for the her and her company’s important contribution in the sports world, especially in the outdoor sector. It is the first time that a non-athlete person is awarded with this prize. Her son

n unmissable super appointment for professionals, as well for sports, tourism and outdoor enthusiasts. And The Pill Magazine couldn’t miss it. The event took place from 2nd to 4th of March in Bologna and was a real success with more than 30,000 visitors thanks also to the concurrently Eudi Show, the fair for underwater activities. Almost 200 exhibitors from all over Italy and many foreign brands participated, more than 3,000 tests were performed and there were more than 120 scheduled appointments. The event was divided into four main areas of activity: Expo, a space for many brands of the outdoor industry where to discover and touch all the latest news; Travel, where it was possible to deal with a wide range of tourist offers dedicated to those who love traveling and living a 100% Outdoor holiday; Experience, where you could test and experiment the different disciplines presented such as bouldering, lead, slackline, yoga, mtb and many others; Community, where to attend real seminars held by sector
experts and learn all the latest news about equipment and your favorite outdoor sport. All appointments were completely free and open to the public and they perfectly met the needs of all those who were present, from families looking for new proposals for an outdoor holiday, to lovers of sports practiced in the open air who got to know their idols because of the many international guests who took part in it. The event attracted many members of the Fasi’s Italian Bouldering Cup with about 215 athletes, among them Tazio Gavioli set the speed climbing record on a 10-meter rope with the only use of his arms; there was also

a standing ovation for the arrival at the fair of two very important people in the world of international climbing: Nives Meroi and Romano Benet, the first couple in real life and in sport to have climbed the Annapurna, their last eight thousand meters among the fourteen in the world. The Climbing Awards have been held at the avent, the Italian Oscars dedicated to sport climbing that have awarded the best athletes, the best gym and the best event of 2017. Very interesting and exciting was the conference about Disability compared to Sport and Tourism, where some Paralympic athletes told their experiences but there were also many other speeches during this fantastic weekend, for example the challenge that the world champion of swimming pinned in open water Davide De Ceglie faced, or also Maurizio Di Palma, the professional jumper base among the best known in the world. Outdoor Expo is a new and important appointment for brands, industry professionals, media, practitioners and super enthusiasts.

t was a Wednesday afternoon, I had a good cup of American coffee, which I love, in my hand and I was working for the magazine, reading and going through different mails I had received during the day, when suddenly, intrigued by the object of one of those mails, I found out that a colleague was offering me the opportunity to spend a freeride weekend in Switzerland organized by Evoc, a German company leader in the production of backpacks and travel bags in the world of snowboarding and bicycles.
Lenzerheide, in the Albula region, Canton Graubünden. The idyllic landscape of this high valley is the ideal setting for all winter sports enthusiasts, because you have the possibility to explore a large area characterized by wide and steep slopes that make the heart of the most brave ones beat. Three whole days dedicated to sport, especially to freeride, together with almost twenty other guys coming from the main sports magazines all over Europe. Three days of fun and pure freeride. “ Give thanks for everything you have, for everything you receive and for everything you are going to receive. Never cease to give thanks, for it is a positive attitude towards life and the very act of giving thanks which draw the very best of you. It helps to keep your heart and mind open”
Sven Kueenle, sponsored by the German brand. The press camp was about testing the new Line R.A.S backpack, equipped with an innovative Airbag system. After a brief introduction on the birth and the history of the company by the marketing manager Jan Sallawitz and the co-founder of the brand Holger Feist, we had the time to test the backpacks in order to be ready and safe for the next day's activities. The morning after we had a rich breakfast with the local guides who would have come with us during our amazing adventure in search of the steepest and untraced slopes. It was a fantastic day, it was sunny and the snow was perfect, it was as if we were surfing on a sea of virgin snow and we were the only ones to leave a trail. It was the first time I attended a press camp, but I could feel the euphoria and the joy of the other guys. I love the mountains, I love being in contact with nature and I love the feeling I have when I find myself immersed in so much beauty, it is an unique emotion. I feel really happy and alive, I feel inside myself the desire to explore and learn new things, I want to live that moment and focus on the emotions I have to feel concretely satisfied. That same evening, I got to know Holger better, he entertained me with his beautiful stories about his travels around the world, he made me remember how good it is to meet new people, listen to new stories, take the best from them trying to apply that in your everyday’s life, drawing inspiration to plan new trips and new adventures. He also reminded me that life is not a race against time and that we have to give the right weight to things, appreciate every single moment and not take anything for granted. And suddenly these words resound in my mind "give thanks for everything you have, for everything you receive and for everything you are going to receive. Never cease to give thanks, for it is a positive attitude towards life and the very act of giving thanks which draw the very best of you. It helps to keep your heart and mind open”… Words that belong to my daily meditations and that I read everyday because they help me to reflect and keep my spirit positive. Once reached the top, we felt satisfaction growing and the big smiles on our face showed that endless joy that was completely enveloping us. It was a pleasant opportunity to meet new people, to make new friends and share the same great passion we have for the mountains and for adventure.

Vibram Maremontana. THE PILL EVENT EXPERIENCE
I
t’s ten past 5 in the morning, indeed because of the daylight saving time it is actually 4.10 am. It's dark, I may have not digested dinner yet, and now I bitterly regret that late talk with Gian Maria. But who is Gian Maria? First of all he’s friend of mine, known, as it happens sometimes when you direct a magazine, through a random email. After some shootings and chats, however, that feeling that distinguishes us humans from our various electronic devices was born, you can call it friendship. He loves to run, for a series of reasons that I wont mention now, and has an association called "Sentieri della Collina" that accompanies people to run, as the name said, on the hills. He also has a gorgeous girlfriend named Irene and a beautiful dog, Achille.
A truly impressive race, night-day, snow-sand, seamountain! You go from a maritime climate to a mountain one, I could not believe it, the landscapes were breathtaking!
It is now 5.30 am, the race is about to start in half an hour and a lot of runners are waiting for the speaker to break the seal. Gian Maria, our The Pill Ambassador, is next to me, very focused and aware that it will be a long day, intense but full of emotions. I can not stop myself from asking the classic useless question even if it would be better for me to shut up: "What's going on your mind Gian?" "Denis, what can I tell you? I’m feeling good, I'm fine even if I'm still sleeping! I ‘m facing this challenge with the awareness of being at the beginning of the season, I’m not physically ready for such a long distance, but I want to listen to my body so I’ll run with a light heart and I just want to have fun. I'm still digesting the rabbit I had last night for dinner though!”. It’s 6 am now, here we go. Hundreds of runners start to run and in a few minutes I find myself alone with the speaker, what shall I do now? Of course, breakfast. Between breakfast and the end of the race a lot of things happened, I met a lot of nice and funny guys but from what they told me my Ambassador would not win, I already knew it. The 9th edition of Vibram Maremontana "Memorial Cencin De Francesco" was won by the French Sebastien Camus in the men field and Audrey Bassac in the women field with almost unbelievable times. But we are not here to talk about timing or competition, my hero has yet to arrive. I eat a slice of pizza, I drink a coffee and here comes Gian. "Gian tell me, how did it go?" “Great! It was the perfect day with the perfect temperature, a bit of wind along the ridges, but nothing more. A truly impressive race, night-day, snow-sand, sea-mountain! You go from a maritime climate to a mountain one, I could not believe it, the landscapes were breathtaking! By the way, do you think that I could keep these "Scarpa" they sent me? I really like them!” Then he adds "it was the right epilogue of a day so full of emotions but also of fatigue. Listen, can we talk about it in front of some pasta? Did you already eat?" "Gian of course not" I answer "I was waiting you!"

Ecstaice Mammut elements.
“What does ecstasy taste like?” Some try to get a taste of it by laying down on the sand somewhere far away, some by diving in the deep sea and some others by going on the top of a mountain. Ecstasy is the closest sensation to the infinite, a fiction that pervades all five of your senses, a limbo between life and death.
Mammut Elements is substance. Or maybe something more? Snow, Ice and Rock intertwine and merge into something more intricate: an intense emotion, a physical effort, a cry of joy, or, why not, a long silence. One last element is opposed to them, a back to the reality in the urban jungle.
Ice instead is a temporary condition, it’s a continuously changing body. It is always different and this is what makes it unique. The temperature, the water flow and the sun radiations transform this condition into a problem to be solved. Climbing a frozen waterfall it’s equivalent to stopping the time. A contemplative approach, full of experience, spiritual and internal: this is the way to ruthlessly investigate the soul and see its insecurities reflected, its errors, its doubts. What appears to be a thunderous waterfall in the summer, dozes off and becomes silent in the winter.
30
Yet, in all that disorder, it seems almost to see a harmonic art, made of color and movement. The Italian Mammut athletes tell their relationship with "their" element. Mattia Felicetti, Martin Dejori, Janluca Kostner, Filipp Schenk and Michael Piccolruaz are the protagonists of this mini series, divided into four episodes. Martin Dejori and Janluca Kostner are the undisputed protagonists of the second episode of the Mammut Elements series, together with the beautiful Bletterbach waterfalls, located in Aldino in Alto Adige region. Born in Ortisei, Val Gardena, Martin and Janluca, have achieved important results in the alpine field despite their young age (for example Janluca climbed the north wall of the Eiger at 18 years old and Martin opened the Via degli Studenti on mount Civetta). Also known as Rio di Ora, Bletterbach’s canyon extends for more than 8km and is located at the bottom of Corno Bianco, a proper dolomitic geological amphitheater. In the past two years Bletterbach has become a real playground for climbers that want to try ice climbing in a unique and spectacular environment. Mammut Elements is a 100% made in Italy project. Everything is told by the voice of Ivan Pavlovic and through the images of the photographer Thomas Monsorno and the filmmaker Matteo Pavana.
You can take everything from us, just let us ecstasy.

reeride in Japan, especially in Hokkaido, is something completely different from what you can enjoy in the Alps. Morphologically, the Hokkaido mountains are not impressive, but their geographical position means they are covered by a lot of awesome snow: dusty and light like nowhere else in the world. The muffled atmosphere outlines the journey as an "infinitely zen" experience where smiles and moments of pure joy are like splashes of color on the white view.
The experience of being completely naked in the Onsen has made us understand an important part of the daily life of these people. Mothers usually wash children while taking care of their body; there is no shame or taboo, everything is natural and relaxing, wellness is the most important thing. Coming out of the Onsen at dinner time there is only one question: ramen or sushi? The Japanese cuisine is delicious and the ramen is a perfect mix of calories that warms you up from the winter cold. To eat sushi we chose a small family restaurant on the shores of Iwanai, the fish was freshly caught and an eighty year old man, manager and cook of the place, cooked us an unforgettable meal.
Travelling to ski, skiing to travel: our great passion for fresh snow brought us to explore new places. Our search was immediately directed towards deep snow but, as soon as we arrived, we immediately realized that something else was attracting our curiosity. We thought we would have found a futuristic world and imagined last generation lifts. Indeed there’s a simple atmosphere that you can breathe among these mountains that is mystical and enlightening; the snow slowly falls on the ground and the birch woods magically create a perfect route to follow. The silence is loud and you can only hear the shortness of breath and your heart beating fast because of the struggle and the emotion of sailing in a sea of dust.
We traveled through Sapporo, Furano, Niseko and Rusutsu, our journey became an experience. The Japanese culture is so strong and its history is so rich that leaves a mark on you. Go to Japan to ski or even better, come with us; our project was born with the idea of involving, stimulating and encouraging women to approach the world of sport trying to remove social prejudices that stop many girls. No matter how good you are at something, the important thing is to do it, try it, throw yourself in it. An all-female idea where the key words are: sharing, entertainment and movement.
Here not only you can find mountains, but also several volcanoes, like Mount Tokachi. Its wonderful slopes gave us a breathtaking view: the sulfur steaming crater wrapped in snow. After a long day of skiing, nothing can be more wonderful than a bath in the Onsen, the pools of hot thermal water immersed in the forest. These small natural pools can be managed in private or non-private facilities. It’s mandatory to take off your clothes and that’s the reason why they are divided between men and women.
Thanks to the sport we can build the essence of our project, strengthening women self-esteem, enhancing their potential. With our team and our collaborators we would like to organize events where women can try various disciplines, from the simplest to the most "action" ones. Sharing difficulties, sweat and smiles, while taking a break from everyday problems. Our idea is a sort of aggregation and positivity in addition to courage, feminine strength and healthy benefits.

y life at the moment is a symphony made of different movements. I usually find myself living three different situations: "Many people", "Some people" and "Almost none". During the year the three situations combine, but never get mixed up, even if they happen during the same week. For a few days I will definitely live on the "Some people" movement. This morning I left home on tiptoe, crossed two bridges, took a few steps on the slabs of a semi-desert Venice and then drove for six hours. I had an appointment with eighteen people in the village of Obergurgl in the Otztal valley in Austria for four intense days of ski mountaineering. It’s true that we often fall in love with opposites, I love mountains and trying to push back my soft passion for fresh snow has become something so impossible for me so I’ve been enjoying it for years with skis and skins. My main interest when starting a new adventure is to put people and their life at the center of my stories. I believe that "reading the people’s personal journey on their face" tells something much more special. It adds that little extra. Ski mountaineering can surely be a place of deep solitude, but at the same time can be a moment of social interactions and humor.
35
... It's snowing outside while we're keeping ourselves warm in the Langtalereck Hütte. There are six people at my table, coming from six different states and everyone of them is trying to communicate in English with his own accent. A Polish, a Swiss, a Czech, an Austrian, a German and an Italian. It seems one of those jokes where there is a person for every nation, but it’s the reality here! Someone left his family at home, and for the first time in a long time, had a good excuse to be elsewhere by himself. Someone received the confirmation email of this experience and shouted all over the office offering coffees to his colleagues. Someone else moved near the ski slopes to teach ski. There are people like me who write and take pictures for some magazines about mountains. Some people haven’t been skiing on fresh snow for years, but spent the last few days transmitting their love for the mountains to their children. There are enthusiasts, girls with an excellent technique, young people with strong legs and people eager for adventure. A mix of perfect ingredients. Wearing bright colors on the white snow we reached the Hinterer Seelenkogl (3472m), the Schalfkogel (3537m) and the Eiskogele (3233m). Spending time on the highest peaks makes you realize how small we are. Wind and silence, a huge view. All these details can be noticed while slowing down in the effort to go back to the sky. The feeling at the top is like finally opening your eyes and finding the perfect atmosphere, it is not about the ideal snow conditions or the peak’s height; it concerns the people you are with and the joy of moment on the mountains.
The most beautiful thing about a group of people created at high altitude is the ease of becoming immediately friends in that adventure. You joke and make fun of each other, life is hard for the ones who never drink among so many grappa’s lovers, but when the climb becomes hard, the breath goes missing and the heart beats strong, everyone encourages you to go on.
Our guides Matthias, Anton and Gabriel have the right experience and energy needed to make the most insecure feel safe. They go straight, without zigzagging - or so they say, and every time we stop they repeat our names. They are really good at their work. Going downhill the "dust" is so strange that it seems to swim in it. As soon as we returned to the shelter we drank Himbeersaft's shots, we ate excellent Strüdel and then celebrated with several rounds of beer. Saying goodbye is never easy, especially if you’ve become a friend with Simon Gietl, one of the strongest mountaineers at the moment. In a few days a stranger can become a friend while giving you advices: you set up tents together and sleep under the stars taking important decisions while you share a strong passion. When you learn to understand how to relate to the group comes the time to hug and say goodbye. The hope is to soon ski together again. We certainly have this desire and the mountains are there waiting for us.

3 ... “I believe this unspoiled place requires and deserves protection„
P
atagonia published a website called Blue Live together with a petition to discourage banks from making investments that lead to the distruction of the rivers in the Balkan region.
The worrying thing is that the number of projects proposed in the Balkan region has doubled since 2015, despite the growing movement in the rest of the world to dismantle harmful dams in support of really clean energy sources. "I believe this unspoiled place requires and deserves protection", said Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia founder. "Some of the world's largest financial institutions have adopted this obsolete and exploitative technology and are funding new dams in some of the last unspoiled places in Europe. This is nothing but a waste of money and a moral farce. This battle is too important to be ignored. It's a secret paradise and it deserves to be protected! Mostly unknown, this area has a rich wildlife and an immense natural beauty, it is a hidden treasure for those who love fly fishing, kayaking, climbing and all this is threatened in exchange for a few kilowatts of hydropower.
The campaign aims to protect this area from more than 3,000 hydroelectric projects, which would cause a potential environmental disaster and wants to prevent that entire families, entire communities, from being forced to leave their homes, their culture, their history just to fuel this hydroelectric gold rush. Patagonia has decided to take action and join the local communities and the ONGs of Bosnia Herzegovina, Albania and Macedonia to urge foreign banks to end investing over 700 million euros to finance the dams construction, 118 of which are located within national parks. In these countries, local activists along with very determined women fight to protect their rivers, streams, deep canyons and extensive alluvial forests that risk to disappear, causing a huge environmental impact. If this opposition were to fail, local communities would be forced to leave their land and the last unspoiled rivers of the continent would be irreversibly damaged.
Patagonia with its feature film explains the reasons why hydroelectric dams are nothing other than a polluting technology and addressees the issue to all the citizens of the world to collect the largest possible number of signatures to stop this project and to form a critical mass towards this argument, unfortunately underestimated by many.

A
s people say "The third time is the charm". In February 2018 the extreme alpinist and mammut team's pro athlete opened a new ice climbing route in the world famous Helmcken waterfalls in British Columbia, Canada. He named it “Power Shrimps”- because the icicles of this cave are crooked, pointed and twisted like shrimps. This success is undoubtedly the most beautiful gift for his 34th birthday that was exactly that day. Before climbing it, Dani had to pierce the ice to fix some hooks in the rock below. The challenge was "just" to climb without falling, a task that became more difficult than expected. "Compared to other times, I felt slightly tense during the entire climb. I did not even know if my ice tool would stay in the icicle or would cut it. It was much more like hard snow than ice", Dani told us about his adventurous climb.
"I also felt that my strength wasn't inexhaustible. I had to climb about 40 meters to reach the stop on the first pitch, a horizontal roof”. It was the third time Dani Arnold visited Helmcken waterfalls. The first time, the ice and weather conditions were so bad that he was forced to abandon the attempt and head to different areas. The following year, he failed when trying to repeat Will Gadd's route. The third year, the conditions were great and the decision to open a new route was the right one. "Despite all the setbacks and painful experiences, this place has such a charm on me that it drove me to come back. Sometimes persistence pays off, "Dani said, explaining his success. Helmcken waterfalls are in the Wells Gray local park, about 500 km from Vancouver in the Canadian region called British Columbia. With its 141 meters high, it's the fourth highest waterfall in Canada. It's a winter paradise for ice climbing enthusiasts. Frozen because of the extreme cold, the spray forms huge walls and caves of ice. While other waterfalls completely freeze, on Helmcken the water continues to flow inside even in the middle of winter. This results in an unusual formation of icicles that, unlike normal waterfalls, are created by frozen sprays coming directly from the waterfall rather than from the frozen running water. This ice is therefore very fragile, the icicles are constantly falling down so the protections must be secured to the rock beneath the ice.

A letter to Sara Grippo
...
I would like to dedicate this article to Sara Grippo, a climber but first of all a friend. Born in Paesana, in the Cuneo area, when she was 23 years old she was diagnosed with an autoimmune glomerulonephritis, a rare disease that affected her kidneys and forced her on dialysis. Sara has learned to share and respect her illness while waiting for a kidney transplant. Despite everything else, she has never stopped climbing. On Friday February the 2nd, Sara received the long-awaited call, the one that changed her life another time.
“
Dear Sara, I wish I could tell you that I already know what I’m going to write in the next few lines but I’d lie. I don’t really know what I want to tell you. I let myself to be carried away by emotions, hoping they will take me to that place where only the heart can speak. The most beautiful things happen when you’re not expecting them. It happened to you on a Friday morning at 6 am, not too many weeks ago. You immediately sent me a voice message, I was casually awake at that time and I couldn’t believe those words. I listened to that message a couple of times more because I was too sleepy to understand it. That morning I was tired and stressed, I was complaining about the too much work taken and the tight schedules. Trival things that don’t last long. Relativity, they say. I can’t explain the emotion I felt, I don’t know if it was closer to relief or excitement, and even now I can not explain it to myself. Whatever that adrenaline force was, it came out in a scream. A very loud scream, only for me and you. Then silence.
46
47
48
I met you on the huge and sunny cliff of Andonno, near Cuneo, not so far from where you were born. We were there with Paolo Sartori to film Stefano, a few days after the opening of the famous first Italian 9b route, a very long connection of hard multiple routes. You were there, as if it was today, to cheer him up in his every attempts. You were known for your story and everyone looked at you as a tenacious girl, a lioness, thanks also to that thick and unmistakable mane that you always carry with you. I can’t really imagined how much you’ve suffered in the last ten years nor the thoughts that have crossed your mind, the pains your body has felt, the scars and the weariness of your veins for all the blood tests you’ve done that you were used to cover with a large patch at the end of each cycle of dialysis, the hours spent in hospital or bed with a large needle that came in and out of your arm not bearing any longer the weight of what had become a custom. You joked about that but other times you stifled your worries looking in Stefano's big eyes, it seemed you were looking for a relief from the fear that the transplant would never come. People will never be able to teach us how to live peacefully with the thought of death. When we are young we should think of something else, about life maybe, without feeling on the edge of a cliff that is so deep that makes our existence meaningless. You're so strong in front of such a big disease! You have become more aware than everyone else of the meaning of time we have in this life and that we should transmit from person to person, from generation to generation, to the ones close to us: loving the life of the people we love. You cannot control fate but making fun of it with a smile is a virtue that only a few people have. You were able to chase your passions even if most of the people advised you to stop and give up, as if there was nothing wrong with giving up if you’re a sick. Do you know how many people told me, "I would like to be as strong as her"? Do you know how many times I thought that too?
Heroes, the real ones, are those who, even when the darkness obscures their eyes, succeed in cheering us up with a smile. From the day I met you, you’ve shined bright on me . That’s why I say "Thank you". And that’s the main reason why I say that "I love you".

Our daily ascents, around 1.000 – 1.500 meters, were compensated with insane views over the Caucasus, sweet powder runs...
nce upon a time, when the Caucasian mountain village Gudauri was not yet famous for Frankenstein chairlifts taking over human control and throwing people off like a wild rodeo horse, Georgia's winter was mainly known for its real treasures: delicious food, constantly good snow conditions and seemingly endless touring options up to 4.000 metres. Three enough good reasons for the four of us to take the five hours flight from Milan to Tbilisi and get ready for six days fully packed with touring and freeriding.
ri, the country’s main ski area, served by around 10 lifts. But the lifts were not the reason for our trip. We met with Ihor and his buddy Yari. Ihor, more a rock Tham a man, is an Ukrainian mountain guide with a lot of experience in his face. He was the one to guide our group for the following days. Yari, his super welcoming Russian friend, fan of good old rock tunes and apparently one of the region’s best paraglider, was ready to drive us around in his Korean Mini-Van with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car. What at first seemed like a rather odd couple turned out to be two great companions for our trip. After a long and exciting journey it finally came the time to mount our skins and split it up! Everyone was more than ready to get it started and explore the Caucasian mountains, and we did it for six days in a row. Even though snow conditions were not perfect and avalanche risk quite high, Ihor guided us through some spectacular landscapes, along some scary ridges up to a maximum elevation of 3.500 meters.
At least, this was the plan. Because the closer we got to the start of the trip, the worse the snow conditions seemed to be around Gudauri. No snow falls over the last couple of weeks and spring temperatures forecasted. Quite frustrating. Even more when we thought about the great conditions and the tons of snow that had been fallen in our South-Tyrolean home mountains in the last weeks and months. But never mind, the trip was booked and our group of good friends, with Thomas as photographer, Michael and Christian as snowboarders and Matthias as skier, was ready for get some fun.
Our daily ascents, around 1.000 – 1.500 meters, were compensated with insane views over the Caucasus, sweet powder runs, interesting encounters with Orthodox monks in the country’s highest monastery, and simply by the most delicious food ever (Khachapuri for life!) – followed by some shots of the one and only Chacha, the national distillate and pride of the Georgians. Ihor and Yari sure knew how to treat us well by not only guiding us to the most spectacular zones of the area (when a valley is called Alaska by the locals, you know you’re in the right place) but also by giving us insights into culture, history and the daily life of the proud Georgian society. And although the powder runs were easier to find once we got back home in the Dolomites, none of us has ever regretted the choice of our destination – because in the end it’s the whole package of adventure, friendship and new experiences that makes skiing and snowboarding exciting as hell and simply more than just a sport. Definitely the trip of our winter!
Once arrived at Tbilisi airport and welcomed by a rather grumpy looking lady at the passport control, we directly headed north, straight to the Greater Caucasus Range. Located in the border region between Georgia and Russia, the area was under heavy tensions in the post-Soviet period that ended up with the outbreak of a conflict between the two countries over the region of South-Ossetia, a currently occupied territory under Russian domination. Driving past the wonderful old town of the capital Tbilisi, through remote valleys on bumpy roads, it became immediately clear that we were far away from the modern mountain resorts in the Alps the four of us are normally used to. It was super exciting – but unfortunately still no snow in sight. After a two hour drive on curvy pass roads we were surrounded by steep mountain faces and finally also by better looking snow conditions than expected. We made it to Gudau-

ted natural places can help us to become aware of ourselves in this biocentric perspective. But even outdoor practices can somehow impact the environment.
Hi Luca Albrisi! Tell us something about yourself. Long story short, I was born in Milano but I've always loved mountains and snowboarding. That's why, about 15 years ago, I left my city and moved to several places both in Italy and abroad. I ended up living (at least nowadays) in a little small town with just 20 inhabitants, in Trentino. I call myself a split boarder who loves writing and filming: these are the main tools I have to tell my way of approaching and "looking" at natural places (as well as my everyday job!).
Where did you get the impulse to film this documentary? First of all I am trying to spread this vision of ecology in the best possible way to try to create a critical mass that goes in that direction. The documentary is a very powerful tool for me, it can transmit complex and profound concepts by adding to them an emotional power typical of video and audio contents. I am convinced that the narration of the "real" has an incredible power.
The mountain is your biggest love and you filmed this beautiful documentary dedicated to it. The mountain is the environment where I feel most comfortable but I love all natural places in general, from the mountains to the seas. The idea behind The Clean Approach is a philosophical theory that has marked and distinguished my choices since I wrote my degree essay (lots of years ago!): it's called echosophy, a fundamental theory in the Deep Ecology. Shortly, the Deep Ecology proposes a biocentric view of the world - that means its center is the ecosystem - and men are an integral part of this system. Starting from this reconsideration of our position in the world, ecology becomes - at least in theory - a natural and spontaneous consequence of this awareness.
In particular, this documentary tries to create a bridge between the outdoor world and the environmentalism that often struggle to communicate when, in my opinion, they should support each other because they have a lot to share. Why did you choose to interview anthropologists and scientists? I believe that in a documentary when you face some "discussed" topics you need to delegate at least some of the considerations to people who have a technical / intellectual credibility regarding those issues. In the documentary we obviously wanted to mix those issues with more emotional ones by other people to alternate the different points of view. In addition, I would like to say that I am really happy that such experts and scientists decided to participate in this project. It was a great motivation for us and an incentive to do our best.
In The Clean Approach we ask ourselves if sustainable outdoor practices that bring us closer to uncontamina-

“We need to recognize that we are part of the whole living system, if not we won’t have a future”
× Talking about us outdoor enthusiasts, we are lucky to get in touch with uncontaminated environments and to perceive closely our belonging to these places. However, sometimes we do not realize that even while practicing “sustainable” activities, we have an impact. I think we should think more about that and try to understand how we can have a lower impact on the environment, flora and fauna, with our activities.
Can you explain me the sentence: “we need to recognize that we are part of the whole living system, if not we won’t have a future”? This sentence comes from Ugo Morelli (cognitive scientist and Unesco World Natural Heritage Management director) and it sums my documentary's theory. I have to be honest, when he pronounced those words during the interview it gave me goose bumps because I knew how fundamental this concept would have been for the whole documentary. The main focus is exactly the one I was talking about: biocentric philosophy. As long as men feel as "the center of" or "above of" the whole ecosystem they will never be able to develop a lifestyle that allows people to coexist with the rest of the planet.
“The paradox of our dream of an uncontaminated nature is that the moment we are into nature we are obviously contaminating it. It’s the classic tourist paradox because it doesn’t really have a solution”. What did you feel when you heard these words? Did they hurt you? Duccio Canestrini (the anthropologist who made this statement) was exactly talking about the tourist paradox: you often try to find calm and peace in the uncontaminated nature but at the same time, with every action you do, you have an impact that doesn’t make you find that uncontaminated you were originally looking for. But if we learn to feel deeply part of that nature, I believe that it will be possible to move within it and not contaminate it. Of course this takes time, sacrifices, educational efforts, but I am sure that we can do it. The more we will believe it, the more this will become a “normal” approach to nature.
We all already know what can be the consequence of this behaviour, even if we pretend not to. A clear and decisive change of paradigm is therefore necessary. We try to protect nature and our mountains in every possible way but in some other ways we are still able to hurt what we love, that's because we are not aware of our actions. How could we act more consciously? I’m sure that the awareness should come from the smallest things especially in the determination to act in a better way every day. Perfection doesn't exist, but improvement does. No one can be perfect but everyone can be more aware about the impact of our every day's actions.
57
The intention is certainly to awaken consciences and to start acting really and truly to safeguard our planet from what is a huge problem: the global warming. Do you think that The Clean Approach can be seen as the right tool change something? I just can say that I hope that The Clean Approach will give its small contribution to pull a few strings. This documentary is surely a small production but had the fortune to remain free in its desire to express itself thanks to the collaboration of public figures and partners who did not want to interfere with the contents of the documentary. Shortly, I like to think that The Clean Approach has a “punk" message, while still remaining a constructive approach to the question.
Be aware of the environmental theme in the outdoor practice: could you explain to me this sentence better? It means starting from the assumption that many of the activities we call outdoor, which apparently have a low impact, can actually have a big impact on the environment. It is obvious that all, or almost all, human actions have an impact on the environment, the important thing is to realize this and to understand how to reduce this impact. Even skiing, splitting or climbing can have an impact on the environment, on the flora and fauna for example. This doesn’t mean giving them up, it means instead becoming aware of the particularity of the places we love so much and try to approach them with awareness and respect. It means giving a new meaning to the word ‘limit’ which no longer becomes a limitation of what we can do but a value added to the particularity of that place. I'm happy to respect some limits (and not prohibitions) because doing that I realize the various aspects of the environment in which I'm moving. The limit becomes an added value so I can have a deep ethical experience that brings me closer to that place and it makes me feel part of it. Of course, it’s not easy, nor immediate. But I think the experience gains a lot this way.
Being impotent to act in front of such a large and big problem. What feeling have you got about that? Here is a sentence by Arne Næess, a Norwegian contemporary philosopher (and mountaineer), founder of Deep Ecology:
"The smaller we come to feel ourselves compared to the mountain, the nearer we come to participating in its greatness.”
This is one of the most beautiful feelings you can think of. Being surrounded by maybe snowy mountains, listening to the silence or to the few muffled sounds, make me feel really small. At the same time, however, feeling part of that nature makes me also feel as if my existence has a meaning because I’m a part of it.
I believe that choosing the “everything” before the “self" is an experience of deep awareness and maturity but requires time, dedication and education.
In the end what we are looking for is something that gives meaning to our lives and in my opinion “to recognize ourselves” as a truly part of something so big and special already represents a meaning. Here comes the whole deep environmental part: respecting nature like we respect something that actually is part of ourselves. The downside is obviously that seeing suffering glaciers or other aspects of the environmental crisis is like facing the suffering of something that we recognize as ourselves and therefore share that pain. The positive thing in this is how that disease can lead us to concrete actions to try to reverse the route, it can represent an incentive for us to act.
I believe that choosing the “everything” before the “self" is an experience of deep awareness and maturity but requires time, dedication and education.

Simone Mondino Photographer INTERVIEW BY
DENIS PICCOLO
61
0 Hi Simone, tell me something about you and where your passion for photography comes from. My name is Simone Mondino and I’m a photographer from Cuneo, Piedmont. About 6 months ago I took the drastic decision to definitively give up any other type of photography except the one dedicated to mountain, outdoor and travel. My passion for photography was born from the crazy love I had for snow, storms and mountains. All of this brought me closer to photography and when I was about 8-9 years old I asked a camera as a gift. I wanted to take picture of a snowfall and there my passion was born. Shoot snowfalls, storms and mountains was the best thing in the world to me. It was pure happiness and it’s exactly the same feeling I have nowadays. When did your passion turn into a full time job? I did all sorts of jobs from waiter, to painter passing through storekeeper and even the plant engineer in a ski area. All those jobs gave me a lot and allowed me to raise some money to buy the my first SLR camera, a Nikon D90. It seems like yesterday, I still get chills if I think about that spring afternoon when I went to the store to buy it. It's funny but I chose a Nikon just because I really liked the color combination of the yellow-black brand. Why do you shoot nature so much? What is your relationship with it?
I have an intense connection with nature and especially with the mountains. It’s a sort of love and unconditional respect. I like its silence, its purity and its uniqueness.
What I’d like people to understand and what I am trying to do in the last months is to transmit the relationship between men and nature: we need to reflect on how small we are compared to it and we need to be aware that there are no bad landscapes but that there are many places, many views that deserve more “respect”. Unfortunately some places in Italy are often ignored especially by young people. One of my project on instagram is about that (by the way my profile is going well and it’s getting close to 50k followers) Is there any photographer you take inspiration from? It may sounds strange but there are two photographers who are my biggest idols. One of these has never been a full-time photographer since he was at the same time a mountaineer and then an explorer: Walter Bonatti. I got to know him some years ago and talking to him left me with unforgettable emotions. I often stop to look at his work and every time I remain speechless because he managed to add that extra something to every shot which made it contemporary both from the point of view of ideas and projects. However, if I have to talk about a “real” photographer I have no doubt: Chris Burkard. He very well represents my concept of photography dedicated to the concept of travel/exploration. I really like his "artistic eye" and I think it's really brilliant in his work not to mention his amazing arctic surf project. What’s the most amazing place where you took photos and why? There are many places near my "home" that I consider amazing but if I have to mention just an incredible one I have to say Iceland with its “insane” landscapes. A truly magical land that you keep in your heart for many months and leaves you with a sense of unbridgeable nostalgia. Furthermore, if you love the solitude and the purity of the nature, the land of ice is the right place for you!

In recent years photography has been massified due to the arrival of digital and social media and is now within the reach of many people. How do you manage to differentiate yourself from the crowd and what opportunities can social media give and take away at the same time? Compared to other people I deeply love this technological world that gives you incredible market opportunities every day, for me it’s very challenging. But at the same time I notice that all this social world is taking away or rather diminishing the originality between the different competitors. Observing social media I see that all people are often looking for the same preset, the same view taking indeed beautiful photos but all looking the same in the end, where the “photographer’s soul" got lost. What is your equipment? I use a Nikon D5 and, as a second camera, I’ve got a d800 with all lenses from 14 to 200mm 2.8. I’ve bought a drone some time to ago because I wanted to change my point of view and try to "enter more into nature” in order to show the world through my eyes. If I have some more space when travel I also bring my last purchase with me, a Panasonic LX-100 and I have to admit that I feel very comfortable with this compact camera that is also very efficient for my outdoor needs. How much are trying to find our roots and the contact with nature influencing our lives? That’s in contrast with many of us who live isolated in an office in front of a screen. Recently I tried to read and listen to people more carefully and I noticed a sense of even greater isolation caused by the growing addiction to work, stress and habits that our society imposes us. I know that it is impossible to live completely isolated from what surrounds us but all this rush, all this nervousness disturbs me especially when the result is having stressed people on the mountains and on the snow. I think that there is no longer patience and wonder towards the small things and towards nature. What I would like to achieve with my photos is a sort of primordial astonishment, the one we like so much to see in the eyes of the children. Stopping in front of a lake, a snow-covered tree, a starry sky lulled by the sound of the wind or surrounded by silence. I would like to start from the beginning to go back to see and live with the eyes of a dreamer. Have you planned your next photo travel? I have many trips in mind but now on the list there are Switzerland, Canada (a road trip between British Columbia and Alberta looking for breathtaking landscapes that will end in Alaska) and many excursions on our Italian Alps from the Cuneo area (where I live) to Friuli. How would you describe yourself? There are two sentences that represent me. The first is "I am a photographer but first of all I’m a dreamer". In fact, ever since I was a child I literally dreamed with my eyes wide open and growing up I realized that in order to continue to do that I constantly need to look for positivity: even in difficult times I always try to find something good. A couple of years ago I woke up one morning with this other sentence stuck in my mind “I photograph reality to make it eternal”, it struck me so much that I tattooed it. Photography for me is pure magic, it’s freezing an emotion, a moment that thanks to that shot will remain forever indelible. What dream would you like to achieve? I’d love to move to the mountains, possibly living in a small village where everyone knows each other, where there are no big luxuries but where you can breathe the good life of the mountain under every point of view and from where you can leave for a new travel or excursion every time you want, always having your safe place, between mountains and snow in winter, where you can go back and feel happy. What I want the most is young people going back on mountains’ routes and shelters to get to know nature. I think that one of the best way to let them discover the beauty that they’re missing is through photography.

‌ Paolino and I started setting up this trip in the autumn of 2016. We had many questions but no answers and not just concerning the walls we would climb. The biggest question was how to come back going down the river that gives the name to the valley: the Rio Turbio. The small inflatable rafts we had dragged for days between the ice of the island of Baffin were already in very bad conditions. We spent months trying to repair them to make them reliable, we tried all kinds of materials and calculated weights and food for 40 days. We were almost forgetting about the climb, overwhelmed by a mix of curiosity and fear towards the river and its rapids.
66
67
≈ Thanks to some Canadian friends, we collected some important info about the access of the valley and some photos of the mountains. It was clear from the beginning that the most challenging wall was Cerro Mariposa. With audacity we decided that it would have been our goal.
T
he only mountaineers who tried it that far were rejected. The reason? It is necessary to transport the material, first on horseback and then on shoulders in the deep woods where there’s not a single path. It is at the bottom of a narrow, shady and isolated valley beyond an alpine lake dotted with icebergs, which can only be crossed by an inflatable dinghy. The lake ends up against a glacier where part of that can suddenly fall down creating large and unpleasant waves. From the pictures we had it seemed completely smooth and overhanging, perhaps impossible, but we ignored that warning. We prepared all the necessary material and freeze dried the food we would need taking any emergencies into consideration. We had everything we needed to spend several consecutive days on the wall and over 40 days of base camp isolation. In January we calculated the weight and size we would have transported when coming back and we tried to inflate the boats. We found a place on the lake where we could load three large bags for a total of 70 kg; unlike the river, there the water was calm but we still got an idea of what was awaiting us. More thoughts, some adjustments, many question marks. We decided that we were ready to go.
ckup at night. We fell asleep quickly and awaken in Bolson, in someone's home. We spent two more days by the river waiting to be able to cross it on horse saddle. The four gauchos that should have come with us didn’t seem to understand our hurry and disappeared in the morning to return drunk hours later; we had brought them some bottles of wine as a gift but that turned out to be a double-edged sword: they immediately became our friends but the wine got them more and more drunk and unwilling to face the long journey. On the third day we took over the situation and decided to go. After eight hours on the saddle we arrived at a small cabin in a clearing where we remained alone with our equipment. We had planned just a single trip to the next base camp, so we decided to climb only with a single rope taking almost all of our climbing tools with us and as much food as possible. The next morning we left early hoping to reach as fast as possible the next cabin despite a load of 35 kg on our shoulders. The greenery was thick, the route did not exist, our huge backpack got stuck everywhere and we had to make our way through trunks, branches and bushes. Slowly we learnt the tricks to move in the jungle, but we got lost numerous times anyway. In the evening, while we were wandering through the woods looking for a way to go up, we decided to leave our load and look for the cabin before the dark. We finally found it at night, following the traces of a puma. The next day we went back to take our load left behind and used a machete to open our way on the last part of the trail.
We took a plane in mid-February to get to Bariloche when the valley of the Turbio flooded in a way that hadn’t happened in decades. Our host was Sebastian De La Cruz, a true Argentine mountaineering legend and the person who best knows the valley. A dozen days passed by and the water level diminished, then we were off on an overloaded pi-

After a few days of rain and rest, the sun came out; we didn’t have the slightest idea of what was in front of us but we went on anyway with the idea to try to climb any wall that we would meet. We explored a side of the biggest wall of the area, made of smooth plates and a other steep parts. We found a line of cracks on the right side and we decided to give that a try the next day. We slept in a hanging portaledge on plant and at dawn we were already climbing the wall. The first part on the iced rock was fast, in a few hours we got to a big ledge that divided the rock in two parts, then the slope increased, we climbed on those steep cracks but we began to have some problems after the first pitches. We moved left and right to look for less grassy cracks but while climbing the situation got worse. We cleaned every single centimeter of the rock to fit fingers and cams in it. We had four or five pitches left, but they seemed too long to climb this way. We planted a nail, a nut and we slid down.
peaks in the area and we had identified a line where the white rock is compact and we thought we could climb it fast. We began our climb with the harness and the ropes on the shoulder, gaining altitude quickly. The granite was perfect and we were finally happy to climb after many days of forced rest. The wall was steep but had a lot of cliffs alternated with ledges. We went up in search of a place where to tie each others but the difficult part ended almost unexpectedly while are ropes were still unused. The peak was still far but it could be reached on a ridge of rock and ice. We arrived in late morning, in front of us there was a boundless horizon: the valleys around, the fjords that infiltrate from the Pacific Ocean, the long road back lit by the sun and, on the opposite side, in the shade, the overhanging wall of the Mariposa. There was no trace of human presence. We went down climbing and in the afternoon we were back at the cabin. In the evening it started to rain.
A few days later, with another half day of good weather, we were again under a wall. It seemed one of the highest
70
Long days of waiting passed, the autumn arrived, the walls became white, covered by the snow and remained wet longer. We did not talk to each other any longer and rationed the food supplies, if rats hadn’t eat them, they should have been enough until the day of the return. The idea of climbing the Mariposa was at that moment (silently) abandoned, but we continued to keep an eye on the atmospheric pressure day and night. The forecasts announced a significant worsening and we decided to run down, leaving there the minimum essential of food and climbing material. In case we would ever need it. Under the heavy rain we reached the first cabin and we stopped there for four days. We were just a few hours away from the base camp but the weather was different. We were no longer under the walls and we no longer felt their presence that was becoming suffocating. We finally ate something different: fresh pasta, bread and some biscuits. It kept raining but we were definitely more comfortable, we read books and didn’t continuously worry about checking the level of the river that could have flood the field. We climbed up again with a new motivation to reach our goal.
few hours. We left before dawn but it took us a long time to get over the roof and get to the first plates; we were only at the beginning of the route but we had overcome one of the parts that worried us the most. We moved fast to spend the least time possible exposed and went immediately under the big roofs. We were just in time to feel on our skin the splinters of a very large fall less than ten meters from us on the nearest dihedral. We continued to climb on the safe part but always in the middle of the water. We had the right rhythm and we became comfortable with climbing on wet rock. The oddest thing is to raise our backpack with six liters of drinking water, when squeezing our pants would be enough to get it. The first big problem came half through the wall: we were climbing on a long steep dihedral when suddenly the crack that we were following disappeared, there was no possibility of protection for several meters and everything was completely smooth. I went down climbing to a halt and we descended until the previous pitch; we had lost a lot of time but we kept our spirits up. We tried to climb on the left side where we couldn’t see. While we were hanging on a belay one of the four friends suddenly came out with a strong click: water started to block our springs and we had to use them with more caution. We continued with a slanted pitch, an exposed traverse, a descent and finally we found ourselves at the top of the previous overhanging dihedral. From there, with another couple of pitch, we reached the large ledge two-thirds through the wall.
The oddest thing is to raise our backpack with six liters of drinking water, when squeezing our pants would be enough to get it.
Although the day of the return had arrived, we decided to stop and anticipated the good weather by going under the wall of the Mariposa. We waited for the wind to slow down to cross the lake but we couldn’t make it; we had to climb down again to the base camp with the promise to come back only if the conditions would be good. The next day we were there again, we could finally cross it and we were under the wall. Water was dripping everywhere. We examined every meter of the rock until we found at least four lines of ascent in the upper part, but the base was a completely smooth vertical wall interrupted only by some large roofs. The only weak points were two oblique stripes of schist, but they seemed extremely crumbly. It didn’t look safe but it was our only option. We started climbing in late afternoon, everything was rotten and wet but with a little delicacy we could climb it. As we went up the situation improved, we entered in a large hanging dihedral of safe rock where water dripped. But we didn’t have the time to see if there was any crack under the first roof because it was already getting dark. We went down with this doubt and slept at the base, above a large rock that seemed to have fallen the day before.
It was late afternoon and we had been climbing for several hours. We only had a short break in the morning but we decided to continue towards the overhanging side to see how it was and to be protected from discharges. In the evening we left for the headwall, the steepest part but also the safest. Some vertical cracks led us to the large final roofs, we could not see beyond that point, but we knew we could have reached the top from there. We chose the right crack from the base examining it with our binoculars and we prepared ourselves for the last freezing shower up to the overhangs. When Paolino reached me on the break it was completely dark, the moon was not out yet but the weather was nice. We prepared ourselves with headlights and warm clothes, following the small cone of light above us. We were climbing in night mode: slow but constant; we no longer had any reason to be in a hurry. We communicated with the lights, there were less fall of materials. The feeling was almost pleasant, we didn’t have any big worries and we still felt strong and motivated.
At night lots of things started to fall down from the seracs on the opposite side of the valley and the noise woke us up, thanks to the moonlight we could see the dust rising. The atmospheric pressure had stopped increasing for a
71
I knew this crack would end up on the plates at the top of the wall, hopefully not more than two hundred meters above us. I was hanging from a big friend, stuffed upside down under the roof. I couldn't touch the wall just with my hands over my head and below us there were at least 700 meters of air up to the moraine. The webbing was wide but our route was interrupted by a large flake. It didn’t seem stable at all but the only way to go was to pull it, without alternatives. I was convinced that this was the final test before the top; I took a big breath and took some risks. I continued along some very thin vertical cracks and exactly at the end of the rope I arrived on a terrace covered in snow. I didn’t know why but I felt we had made it.
safely leave the valley. Before the evening came we were back on the ground, we went down to the field and the next day, when the weather was starting to change, we put all the remaining materials on our shoulders and went down to the first cabin. The alarm went off at night, we brought all the material on the bank of the river, in a less turbulent area where to enter the water and we started to prepare ourselves. Our concern for the river has turned into the perverse curiosity of knowing how things would end. It took us a few hours to be able to fix the 120 kg of cargo (and ourselves too) inside the rafts. We went into the water, immediately gaining speed and we were instantly soaked in the rapids.
The moon came out, we went up the snow-covered slabs, desperately looking for a place where to set tents, we continued to climb up to the highest point of the wall. Right there, between two pieces of rock, we found the perfect place; we set there, started to cook and laid down. It was almost four o'clock in the morning and even if we were on the move since six we couldn’t not sleep because of the excitement. At dawn we organized our material and tried to cross the summit slope to go down in one of the gullies on the edge of the wall. We understood immediately that there was too much snow and too many seracs, we gave up and decided to go down on abseil, an option that we had initially discarded because it was too long with no anchors. To limit the weights we were using a hammer and a half rope found at the cabin. We had no doubts anyway and we began to go down confident in ourselves.
Except for a few moments of tension and some crashes on outcropping rocks everything seemed to be going well. Hours passed by and we saw the environment changing around us; gradually large trees more life forms began to appear. We crossed an ancient burnt forest, we saw wild horses and some condors, the threatening weather turned into a warm autumn day. The stream was calm and we had to paddle; we began to recognize the places where we first passed and crossed the estancia where we’ve slept. We knew that our destination was near, but once again, before the end, our final test was missing: the stream caught us off guard and it’s increasing speed sucked us down. Trunks and pointed branches were everywhere, uprooted by the flood. We paddled with all the strength we had to avoid going against them, then, suddenly, everything calmed down again and we found ourselves in the lake, safe. That same evening we managed to take a boat ride with tourists and we arrived in Bolson.
From that moment on it was almost a rush to the bottom: our hours were counted and we had few opportunities to

A
nother beautiful day on a cliff and in good company has ended. It all started on the evening of the 5th of April, when Nicola, a dear friend of mine, and I headed towards Marco's home in the Trento area to plan our shooting day that would have take place the following day. After several attempts, we managed to convince Marco to skip some of his university programs in order to leave early in the morning to try some nice routes while waiting for the arrival of Patrick, the photographer. It took very little to convince him, just a few nice images of the wall that we would have climbed, indeed it was really easy to distract him from his "super" commitments.
of difficult pitches, Patrick, the photographer, arrived together with Matthias, a climber friend of him who gave us some advice on the various routes. Matthias knew very well this cliff being practically at home. There was a beautiful light and Patrick wanted to start immediately with the shooting. First of all, he made some shots of the approach phase and the preparation of the material, and then we got to the heart of the action. We mounted the fixed rope and, with Patrick in position, we started climbing while choosing the pitches on which to be photographed. In this way we could try again some movements on the pitches we had chosen at the beginning of the day. Matthias, being a local, advised us to try a couple of very beautiful routes and immediately we followed his advice. Nicola tried an 8a + in the right part of the cliff, while Matthias and I instead tried a very nice 7c + / 8a. We breathed pure euphoria! Patrick, seeing us so excited to try these beautiful and hard pitches, took the opportunity to take some more pictures. It was really a good experience because I had the pleasure of meeting new people who share my same passion, we climbed all day and we also completed some good routes, feeling satisfied with our performance. Patrick was very good and professional and managed to capture the best moments of the day. Sunset time is always the best moment to climb, but it was getting dark so we gave up the idea to continue and we headed to Foresta, at the Forst factory to drink a good beer. A beautiful ending of the day spent together. Who knows maybe, if our daily tasks would permit it, we will manage to organize another wonderful day to climb together.
The departure has been set for 9 am, from Trento we headed to Merano to continue to the entrance of the Val Senales, where we parked and then reached the cliff of Saustall, known for being the cliff with the largest number of routes above the 8th grade of Alto Adige. It is a very steep cliff that requires a good physical strength but also a lot of technical and when we arrived at the start of the route we were amazed in front of this wall of gneiss which is very similar to granite, it seemed much more appealing than the photos we saw on the guidebook. Of course, before walking towards the cliff we stopped for a moment in a nice little local shop to get something typical to eat in order to better face the day. We were super pumped and excited to try some hard and technical pitches. We set our material and after a few minutes I was already on a training pitch assured by my friend Marco, while Nicola chose some hard pitches from the guidebook and tried to complete them. After a couple

1 . S CA R PA FURIA S The new spring summer 2018 collection climbing shoe. Ultra soft and sensitive, it gives you the feeling of being barefoot on the rock and the ability to hook the grips. Asymmetric and arched, with an arched tip, it offers very high sensitivity on the tip. It is one of the softer climbing shoes ever. Designed for bouldering, Furia S is a very sensitive shoe, very good for climbers who like to feel the support but who are looking for a performing shoe when it comes to tip, heel and hooks. This is why the tip is almost entirely covered with a layer of rubber. The upper combines 7 pieces of microfibre with seams that do not create overlaps. The Wave closure system distributes the pressure on the upper evenly, allowing volume adjustments and the elastic bellows helps the fit. The Ipr-tension system ensures maximum flexibility while keeping the tension from the fingers up to the heel, this also helps the most bad steps allowing you to support almost the whole sole. It was quite impressive to look up at these cone-shaped deposited loam pyramids with heavy stone chippings on top, it seemed like they would have fall down on us at any moment. We felt like we were immersed into another world.
I
t was a humid, warm and cloudy spring day at the beginning of April. Maria, Simon, Thomas and I met just above the city of Bolzano, then we drove further on the winding road for another fifteen minutes to the sunny valley of Renon, south east of the Sarntal Alps in South Tyrol. Famous for its various vegetation, the area extends from the sun kissed vineyards and chestnut trees in the valley to the mountain Rittner Horn, which is located around 2.360 meters above the sea level. In the municipality of Renon we met our dedicated and passionate tour guide of the day, Otti, that we were ready to follow perfectly equipped with our speed hiking gear, pants, t-shirts, sweaters, sunglasses as well as jackets, socks and shoes from Salewa, La Sportiva, Mammut, Columbia, Alpina, HAD and GM Socks. We also had walking sticks from Leki so we left for the already in bloom green fields towards one of the natural wonder of South Tyrol.
we found ourselves in the smallest part of the earth pyramids area, where we took a look from some distance at those spectacular earth formations made of material about 25.000 years old. In a second moment we drove to the bigger sector, where we first checked out the area from different angles until we found a path which brought us closer to the earth pyramids. Otti guided us over a fence, down through slippery forest trails until a river, in the end we went up again and found ourselves in the midst of the about fifteen to thirty meter high earth pyramids. We hiked, run up and down, back and forth on the clayey underground and we tried to reach the pyramids through the corridors to get a better look. After four hours of adventuring through the world of the biggest earth pyramids in Europe where we shared a lot of laughters, chats, jokes, with our clothes completely covered in mud and some scratches on our skins, we hiked back to the official walking trail, explored the pyramids a little more from above and finally enjoyed the view and its amazing changing of colors – the green of the forest, the powder-blue of the cloudy sky and the russet of the pyramids one last time, before we crossed the green fields with grazing of ponies and horses to return to our starting point. We were ready leave this wonder of nature behind us and head back home.

I realized that many times, maybe a bit too often lately, we no longer have the time to do what we really like nor the time to enjoy beautiful things because we have too many things to do, too much to think about!
ow many times do people tell us that we must appreciate the little things in life? And how often do we forget this small but great concept? There is just one life and we should spend more time doing what really makes us feel good. For example, I usually take the car to go to work every morning then I spend the whole day in front of two screens, I answer to the thousand emails that fill up my mailbox and at the same time I’m always attached to my phone. After 8 hours spent like this, I get out of work, I take out my cell phone and I answer to all messages on whatsapp, check out the emails again, take a look at facebook, scroll through instagram and then I stop to look, slightly envious, at the pictures of those people who are out in the mountains, alone. Then a certain desire of adventure starts growing in me.
so many times my laziness and comfort wins over that, but that day was going to be different. After my eight working hours, I met up with my friends in the small village of Laces. Once I’ve taken off my shirt and put on my hiking boots, I felt like I’ve been catapulted into another world. The Val Venosta, and Monte Sole specifically, are really special places, sometimes you only need a shirt there, while on the opposite side of the valley there is so much snow that you will have to use snowshoes. From the top of the mountain we could see the whole city and we could imagine the buzz and the deafening voices of the many tourists, while we were alone with our own breath and our silence, it was really magical. From where we stood, we could see the summit of the Ortles, one of the highest mountains in the Alps, and at some distance there was Merano.
Every day, going to work, I pass through the Val Venosta but the only thing I perceive is the traffic; it is the Easter weekend these days and the streets are even busier than usual because of the many tourists who have decided to spend their holidays here. But for one day I wanted things to go in a different way! The weather forecast wasn’t good, it would have been bad for the entire week except for some timid sun on Thursday. So I decided to ask to four of my friends, that I had not seen in a long time, if they wanted to come with me for a walk on the mountains and luckily they felt that need to go out to explore too. We had everything set for that famous Thursday.
There I thought that one hour before I was sitting behind a desk but at that moment I was completely immersed into my nature, and that was a very nice feeling. The guys saw me so absorbed into my thoughts that decided to leave me alone for a few minutes, they sensed my profound need to reconnect with the real world. My goal, as well as Heike, Stefan, Martin and Patrick’s, was not to reach a top or a shelter, but simply take a nice walk all together, because lately we used to meet more in the digital world than in the everyday’s life. The most important thing was not the goal, but the path we shared together. I realized that many times, maybe a bit too often lately, we no longer have the time to do what we really like nor the time to enjoy beautiful things because we have too many things to do, too much to think about! There are many adventures and there will be more, you should just have the desire to go out and explore!
I had my camera with me, it had been closed in a drawer at home for a long time but not that day. Usually to get out of the city and reach a calm place it takes at least an hour but we were away from the chaos of the city in ten minutes and we found ourselves immersed into nature, surrounded by our beautiful mountains. Despite my closeness to them,

unning is like a journey. It can be that type of travel planned months before, in details, only thinking about your arrival point, enjoying the views that rushes out of the window. It can also be a last minute travel, with just the time to catch that train that is about to leave and that maybe won’t happen again. A moment. One moment. The decision that can change your life. It can be a solo trip, to discover yourself through unknown places, discovering new faces, unimagined places, experiences that you’ve only dreamed of. You’ve hoped for. It can be an endless journey into everyday life that repeats itself. Every day the same, along that road that becomes just a bracket between the outward and the return. It can be a one-way trip, to escape once and for all from everything you want to forget. Or reach.
rate them once again. Steps that go on endlessly, climbing the stairs to try not to lose that last train already moving. An endless race like the one on the lanes of a tartan track to reach the platform 23 in front of an immobile public that observes everything and nothing. Running is a way to discover yourself as a part of a single wave as soon as the subway doors open the route. It is like to be in front of the starting line of your own marathon. All together, waiting, with your feet ready to run. A force that frees itself at the very moment when the road opens and hundreds of feet decide to get going. A single direction and a hundred of ways of dealing with it. Calm and chaos mix, in a continuous coming and going of overtaking and slalom, knowing that the finish line is just one and we all, sooner or later, will have to go through that. Similar stories, written running fast between the arches of a temple where the center of the world is.
A station is the crossroads of hundreds of stories that suddenly intertwine without knowing anything about each other. Like moving escalators that endlessly go on, unaware of who they are carrying on. Slow steps of those who take their time to reach the departure track. Quick steps of those who live the day like a continuous one, always trying to get first but always finding themselves just a a few steps behind. Heavy steps, of those who drag a suitcase full of problems that perhaps would like to leave behind. Light steps, like those of two sweethearts who kiss not caring about the world that goes on spinning while waiting for the whistle of the train that is going to sepa-
Running is a journey. It is that moment when the world is left out. Where the only thing that counts is to find yourself. All you need is a pair of shoes and a t-shirt to transform marble and glass into grass and blue sky. It is the awareness that everything is possible. Hold your breath, have a run and jump into the fray with your eyes closed. Feeling the effort of the strained muscles, the heart beating wildly, the short breath that burns the lungs. Running is just the courage to do that. Take that ticket and do not stop.

1.NEW BALANCE FRESH FOAM 1080 V8 Runners always look for the perfect shoe, with the right amount of cushioning and at the same time that can provide responsiveness to get the best performance. The new version (V8) of Fresh Foam 1080 is New Balance's answer for those looking for comfort and speed at the same time. The fit is guaranteed by a technical, wrapping and seamless mesh upper that protects the foot, allowing it to breathe and flex freely to run without feeling weighed down, thanks to the new cuts created in the sole. The Fresh Foam midsole (derived from V7) in a single piece with geometric design allows a cushioning or a personalized support in different points of the shoe according to the type of support. The overall weight is significant (314 grams) and it’s perfect for heavier people, while the differential is only 8 mm. The right ally to grind more and more kilometers. OUTFIT:
Tee - New Balance Ice 2B| Short - New Balance Impact Solit 3In | Socks - Calze Gm Watch - Garmin Forerunner 935
2 . M I Z U N O WAVE SKY WK Mizuno’s Wave Sky WK is a shoe with a classic but innovative design, that can provide high-level performance. It adapts perfectly to the foot thanks to the new WaveKnit mesh fabric that offers a personalized fit with a sporty and fresh look. The classic Wave technology, placed inside a U4iC midsole, allows comfort and support at the same time: in the upper part it provides cushioning and softness, while the lower part allows thrust and stability. The intercooler ventilation system in the midsole helps to reduce the temperature by expelling hot air in excess while the Pebax system helps to absorb impacts, providing a more stable support base. The X10 solid rubber sole protects the areas of greatest impact and traction at every step. The weight of 250 grams reflects its fast nature, while the 10 mm differential is perfect for those with less running technique. The perfect balance between form and function. OUTFIT:
Tee - Odlo Ceramicool Motion| Pants - Odlo Sliq | Socks - Calze Gm
3.SALOMON SONIC RA PRO Salomon Sonic RA Pro is the evolution of the first Salomon series designed for the road. What was a thick and rigid upper has been replaced with SensiFIT, an ultra-thin breathable fabric that is much more comfortable. The mesh material obtained with an integrated cage system adapts perfectly to the fit, allowing the lacing system to distribute pressure across the whole midfoot. The cushioning is reduced to give priority to the speed, thanks to the Geometric Decoupling and Vibe systems, which push the foot towards a faster roll and a quick dissipation of vibrations, to reduce fatigue and the risk of injuries in a more effectively way. The weight is contained (only 235 grams) with a drop reduced to only 8 mm. A model designed for specific quality workouts and fast races, to bring your ride to a higher level. A decisive, reactive shoe that wants to run. For the runner who knows exactly what he wants. 4.UNDER ARMOUR HOVR SONIC The HOVR Sonic are the latest drop of Under Armour. The main innovation is given by the new UA HOVR compound of the midsole, more reactive than the previous models. A new foam that provides cushioning and shock absorption at every step. What really is new from any other technology is the mesh in which it is wrapped. A network, called Energy Web, which helps to maintain the shape of the midsole and provides reactivity and constant energy efficiency. A unique application, that can be seen both on the heel and on the side of the shoe. A detail that makes the HOVR Sonic unique in style, like any other Under Armour model. The upper is in multi-mesh to ensure both a perfect fit and an adequate breathability. The drop is only 8 mm while the weight is average (282 grams). Cushioning, reactivity, comfort, durability. The perfect synthesis that makes the HORV Sonic suitable for any type of universe. Ask me if I'm happy.
Ask me if I'm happy
Ask me when you ďŹ nd me absorbed in the colors
while I rest under a lonely trunk
of a sunrise or a sunset.
savoring the essence of things surrounded by an vague silence.
Ask me if I'm happy while I'm lost in the blowing the wind
You can ask.
in the white purity of winter snow
I will not answer you.
or in the warmth of a rock warmed by the sun
Happiness is everywhere, in small things and in everything we can experience. In simple occasions and not only in the great triumphs. A gesture, a smile, the scent of a freshly baked bread, a tree leaf kissed by sunlight. When you're happy, think about it.
