D AV I D E F I O R A S O Black, like the oil wasted in plastics and packaging. Black, like the working conditions behind it. Black, like the death of many small businesses. Black, like the mood of someone who, after another compulsive purchase, finds himself even more sad. This editorial comes a few days after Black Friday, the "best" thing we have been able to import from the realm of bulimic consumerism. On the day of unbridled shopping, when you go out just to spend, to dive into drunk consumption at all costs, you get caught up in the greed of having. The day when buying something is the only thing that matters. And who cares if 12 million tons of plastic end up in the sea every year. Who cares about respect ing human rights or about the dark sides of the work flow. Who cares about the many small businesses unable to compete with these excessive marketing phenomena. What we need to understand is that buying is a very important choice for the individual consumer; a choice that has concrete consequences for the society and the environment. It is necessary to reverse the route, to put an end to the rituality of an uncontrolled consumption, to sensitize people to reconcile purchases with the respect for the land that hosts us, to support a circular economy. We cannot continue to feed the excesses of consumption that involve precarious jobs and that encourage the overproduction of goods. To Black Friday we must respond with green: the green of an outdoor walk. The green of the money saved. The green of hope. There should be more people smiling for what they already have, rather than buying what they don't need. Buying less and better, buying what is useful and what has been produced responsibly. Free from consumption as a final goal, from waste and the need to have more, everything and always. Make Friday Green again.

Simone Moro and Tamara Lunger, La Sportiva’s ambassadors, left for their new winter expedition: the chain of Gasherbrum I (8,068 m) and Gasherbrum II (8,035 m). A mountaineering conquest,

made for the first time in the summer of 1984 by Reinhold Messner and Hans Kammerlander, which no one has ever repeated in all these years, let alone in the most difficult season, winter. The project will be divided into two parts: they will first attempt the ascent of the Gasherbrum I,

replicating the March 2012 venture of Adam Bielecki and Janusz Golab. Then they will climb the Gasherbrum II starting directly from the hill that separates the two peaks. 10

FJÄLLRÄVEN PRESENTS THE RE-WOOL COLLECTION Within the search for new ways to reduce the environmental impact of its products, Fjällräven has extended the use of recycled wool to the new AW collection. Known as Re-Wool, this wool comes from pre and post-consumer sources around the world. Produced in Italy, from three different historic companies in the textile district of Prato, it is made up of old garments or production leftovers that would otherwise be thrown away. Once collected, it is divided by color, chopped and spun again. "We try to use recycled materials wherever possible" - explains Christiane Dolva, Fjällräven Sustainability Manager - “This is done in order to save energy and resources by using pre-existing materials. We believe that our Re-Wool is a good alternative to virgin wool, because it uses material that would otherwise be wasted. "

With a winter of freeride and high-altitude activities in sight, the Canadian brand Arc'teryx could only offer a range of products capable of guaranteeing comfort, innovation, but above all inspiration for all those who are looking for new challenges and unique sensations. For the autumn/winter 2019 collection, Arc'teryx surprised everyone by presenting two historic products: the Sentinel designed for women and the Saber AR for men, in the AR versions, which allow a better fit in terms of comfort and offer a more modern look. For the more ambitious people and for those who want to go further these two models represent the perfect adventure companions. Equipped with a wider cut on the chest, they allow you to move more comfortably and guarantee a better rotary movement, giving the possibility to wear an intermediate layer more easily. Made with a flannel lining that is softer and warmer to the touch, they guarantee excellent protection during the most extreme conditions thanks to the Gore-Tex N70p 3L fabric, which is at the same time robust and flexible. These two new AR versions are also presented with larger pockets and ventilation zips slightly moved upwards to offer a better accessibility. In addition to these two products, Arc'teryx suggests an additional garment for this season that can be perfectly combined with both jackets, giving you the opportunity to perform various outdoor activities during the most adverse conditions. We are talking about the Proton LT Hoody. It is the perfect combination of thermal protection and breathability, thanks to the use of Coreloft Compact 80 synthetic lining and Fortius Air 20 fabric.

The Fjällräven Down Promise -

BY DENIS PICCOLO

It was 1974 and Åke Nordin, Fjällräven founder, was in the still and silent snow-covered landscape of northern Sweden. All he wished for was a warmer jacket able to protect him from the chilling wind of those winter wonderland.

T

oday, after years working in the sector, Fjällräven has become a leading brand in the production of jackets, down jackets, sleeping bags and any type of down-padded garment. But that’s not all. In fact, since 2014, the Swedish outdoor brand is committed to ensuring that the feathers used for their products are not only of the highest quality, but that they also come from ethically responsible production processes. We are talking about the Fjällräven Down Promise, the promise of their 100% traceability in their down chain, which means that they can trace the down in their jackets right back to the farm where the birds lived in the best possible conditions.

plier which shares Fjällräven's animal welfare policy and has adopted its code of conduct. All feathers used are a by-product of the food industry and this allows not only to reduce waste, but also to avoid horrible practices, such as live plucking.

The first global controversy regarding animal welfare began in 2009. Fjällräven has embraced this challenge and has committed itself, year after year, to controlling its entire feather production chain to make it totally transparent so that it was possible to trace back the entire course of the feather used, reaching the geese farms.

It is is an ethical commitment that the Swedish brand carries on with great seriousness. Much progress has been made since that winter of 1974, yet it is still a work in progress. Fjällräven is constantly looking for improvement, listening to experts in the field and learning from them, so that each stage of the production process is always up to the highest possible standards of animal welfare. To date, Fjällräven can claim to be the outdoor company that applies the most controls and offers the greatest transparency in all down production processes.

There was room for improvement and over time strict guidelines have been developed on how to source and handle goose down. Today the brand works with just one down sup-

The down is stored separately in specially marked bags to avoid being mixed with other down. A special team of auditors oversees the whole process and conducts both announced and unannounced checks. Every aspect is carefully controlled: from how eggs are laid to how geese are raised, fed and slaughtered.

ive Ten takes its name from the climbing grade, 5.10, which according to the early Yosemite Decimal System (YDS), was one of the most advanced climbs possible, requiring skill, concentration, and as much technological assistance possible. In 1985, Five Ten founder Charles Cole was climbing in Yosemite National Park and following a fall while descending from El Capitan, decided to create the 5.10 brand to be designed with an improved outsole compound offering greater friction and durability. Stealth was born, a rubber that changed the climbing world, making the impossible, possible. Today Stealth is used in the entire Five Ten climbing line up, those benefits also offered to the biking community in mountain bike products. In November 2011, Five Ten was acquired by the adidas Group and in 2019, for the first time, adidas and Five Ten have joined

forces co-branding a new range which offers creative and technical solutions for climbing. Combining over 50 years of integrated technology, the two brands have managed to bring people from people to the outdoors without compromising performance and style, helping them live a healthier, happier and more creative life. Highlights of the new Five Ten range include the new Aleon climbing shoe, designed with climbing legend Fred Nicole, and an update of the Five Ten first approach shoe, the Five Tennie. ADIDAS FIVE ALEON Designed for bouldering and sport climbing, the Aleon has a wraparound design and a moderate downturn for precise edging and enhanced control. Garmin inReach Mini -

Living in close contact with nature must be based on a fundamental aspect: safety.

The unexpected in the outdoor world represents an element to be always taken into consideration whether you are in the middle of the sea, in the desert or on the crest of a glacier as well as during all those activities considered safer, such as a walk in the mountains close to your home.

an SOS request is sent from the device. The display, perfectly legible even under direct sunlight, and the intuitive user interface, makes communication via inReach Mini fast and practical. Three weather forecast options are also available for your current location or any other waypoint or destination on your itinerary.

Garmin has been promoting safety, sports and outdoor campaigns for years thanks to precise tools with functions aimed at safeguarding people and has recently created Garmin inReach Mini, the indispensable device for all modern adventurers and outdoor activities enthusiasts. It is a new lightweight device, weighing only 120 grams, compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand, and equipped with a twoway satellite text messaging system, which, by signing a dedicated subscription (annual or more flexible, which allows you to use the service only when you really need it) connects you to the global Iridium satellite network which guarantees 100% coverage of the earth's surface to send and receive text messages and emails from anywhere in the world. The communicator integrates a high sensitivity GPS receiver that allows you to always track your position in geographical coordinates, save waypoints and have the basic outdoor navigation functions. Thanks to its small size it is ideal to be applied on a backpack, carried in a pocket or safely stored on a boat or plane. It has also been designed to withstand the most extreme conditions, being at once shock-resistant and waterproof. It includes a rechargeable lithium battery that guarantees great autonomy: from 50 hours of battery life in 10-minute tracking mode, up to one year in stand-by mode. In case of emergency Garmin inReach has an SOS function active 24/7 directly connected to the GEOS international emergency response solutions and monitoring center, also allowing you to interact with the emergency responders to be always updated on their arrival or for further information. You can also set up a list of contacts so that they can be notified if

Full Safe Ferrino Every year there are more than 250 deaths between Europe, North America, the Andes and the Himalayas. This is the tragic result that affects those who practice winter sports. Today, however, there are other innovative and functional technological gears that can increase the safety level of an enthusiast, like the new Full Safe backpack by Ferrino, the only backpack in the world equipped with three main systems for avalanche safety: the an Air Safe respirator, the AlpRide airbag and the Recco reflector.

What happens when someone is hit by an avalanche? About 70% of people completely buried during an avalanche die within the first 35 minutes due to obstruction of the respiratory tract by snow and ice or fatal injuries. The production of the "ice mask" around the mouth and face, due to the solidification of the exhaled moist air prevents from breathing, the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the inhaled air results in rapid hypercapnia while the reduced percentage of air present in the snow and the weight of the snow mass crushes the subject's chest with a consequent reduction in ventilatory capacity. How can the Full Safe backpack help you in such situations? It is a unique product equipped with three main systems for avalanche safety. First of all the Airbag Alpride E1 system can be easily used thanks to a lever on the left shoulder that activates the

electric inflation unit and helps to float as much as possible in case of being knocked down in an avalanche. The Air Safe respirator helps you breath in case of burial. In the end, there’s a Recco reflector on the backpack to boost chances of being traced in case of accident. In addition there is a front pocket with eyelets designed for transporting technical gears as well as self-rescue tools. Let’s talk about the research projects and the field trials done to evaluate the functionality of the backpack. The USL Valle d'Aosta Mountain Medicine Center and the EURAC Research Institute for Emergency Medicine in the Mountains of Bolzano have come up with and coordinated a research project to follow specific aspects of research on oxidative stress, the University of Padua instead had to deal with gas analysis under the snow cover. The National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps has been recreating the scenarios ensuring safety during the study. The part concerning the breathing was studied on the field by an independent team of specialists whose purpose was to test individual protection systems in order to collect data 42

W

e talked about it with the developer, Dr. Federico Prato, anesthesiologist and intensivist doctor, who has worked with Ferrino for many years on the development of a product line dedicated to increasing safety and improving survival in the event of avalanche.

both on their actual effectiveness and on the pathophysiology of the overwhelmed subject. You mentioned breathing tests, what were them about? The Air Safe respirator system was tested thanks to a group of volunteers. It helps a person hit by an avalanche by removing carbon dioxide from the already reduced amount of air to breath, it also eliminates the formation of the "ice mask and the lack of obstruction of the respiratory tract. Separating the inhaled air from the exhaled air through a respirator system increases the inspired fraction of oxygen and consequently reduces the amount of carbon dioxide. This allows adequate oxygenation for a long time in people completely buried under the snowpack, allowing an adequate time frame for the intervention of rescue personnel. How were these tests carry on with the volunteers? Numerous sensors were applied to constantly monitor their vital parameters in order to ensure maximum safety. At this point a condition similar to an avalanche was simulated: volunteers were completely covered with snow. Then they

underwent two tests. In the first one they found themselves under a layer of snow without wearing any breathing aid, but with the presence of an air cavity. In the second case they did not have any air cavities, but they wore the Ferrino Air Safe respirator system. In the case of tests with air cavities but without a respirator, the lack of oxygen and the accumulation of carbon dioxide rapidly reached the stop criteria approved by the test ethics committee. In the second case, on the other hand, the average duration of the tests was significantly longer. Moving onto conclusions, what are the final results of these studies? These studies confirmed the usefulness of carbon dioxide removal devices in survival after an avalanche accident. Surely by using Ferrino's Full Safe backpack you can increase your chances of survival in case of avalanche burial. For this reason the Wilderness Medical Society recommends its use and has included in its new guidelines the important combination of a backpack with airbags and a respirator system.

RP Roberts x Jones Snowboards: Frontier + Frontier Split RP Roberts is not an unknown name for all Jones lovers. The British artist has in fact already painted 4 of their boards in the 2017 and 2018 collections. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Jones Snowboards, the brand asked him to create this special piece to commemorate the launch of the Frontier and Frontier Split. Formerly named the Explorer, the Frontier is a directional freeride board designed to be the perfect daily driver for the creative all-mountain and backcountry shredder. The new graphic features five peaks from around the world that hold special meaning to Jones Snowboards founder Jeremy Jones. He has ridden from the summit of all these at different stages of his career, we are talking about Wilson Peak Colorado, Corrugated - between USA and Canada, The Tetons - Wyoming, Shangri-La - Nepal, Bec des Rosses - Switzerland . Balancing old school painting skills with new school street art skills, the process RP uses to create his board graphics is quite unique. He starts by collecting sunrise and sunset images of the peaks. Then he made a digital mock up of the layout, layering the peaks in various orders to find the best composition that avoided placing important mountain features over the binding insert locations. Once the composition was to his liking, RP picked up the pen, paint brush and spray can. Bright colors and bold textures of mountain landscapes come out of the design. His art captures the essence of the mountains we love so much.

Can you briefly tell us about your background? I grew up in North Wales and now live in Manchester. I spent most weekends and holidays hiking and walking, so I’ve always been a fan of the outdoors. Art wise, my father was an art teacher but there was also the external influence of seeing the early 90s of graffiti develop at the local skate bowl. The use of colours and style captured my imagination and got me interested in that culture. I studied sculpture in college and then worked for a company involved with delivering graffiti workshops to kids in Europe. For years I made and sold artwork, but more as a hobby. It’s quite a scary prospect being solely dependant on your artwork because you end up not only being an artist, but you also have to manage accounting, sales, pricing, marketing strategy.

44

B Y S I LV I A G A L L I A N I

Can you tell us how you had the opportunity to work with Jones? And what has been your favourite graphic to produce? I got a direct message from Xavier from Jones on Instagram saying that Jeremy had seen my work and if would I like to submit a design idea for the Mountain Twin, this developed into creating designs for four models that season. I think my favourite has to be the Mountain Twin from the 16/17 season. It features my painting of the Matterhorn, and is the first graphic I created for Jones, a firm marker in my mind, it was when I first considered the real prospect of making a living from art. What inspired you to start painting the mountains and what is the process behind it? A lot of the time I am painting specific commissions, so the inspiration comes from the source photos, but there is also external inspiration as far as colour schemes are concerned from pottery, furniture design, graffiti. It pays to be interested in many artistic sub-cultures, as this gives you a broad view and open mind when it comes to experimenting with technique and colour. I started painting mountains as I was searching for an avenue to take my artwork, and I’d completed a couple of mountain commissions and it just blossomed from there. I work a lot creating private commissions and try to involve people in the process. Often they will provide a reference photo, but I also do a lot of online research trying to find a similar view of the peak at different times of the day. Once I start painting, I usually send them a shot with the initial colours blocked in, if they are happy I then go ahead with building up textures, depth and finally details.

change and global warming? I think humanity is having a dramatic impact on the speed the climate is changing. The work that POW does trying to change the opinion and direction of the senate with regards policy is a great approach when trying to improve the situation. Similarly, I admire the work of Surfers Against Sewage, trying to improve government policy with regards corporate responsibility. It is a great example of how the environmental impact of consumerism should be addressed by the producers as well as the consumers. There seems to be a lot of focus on the consumer to take responsibility, and not so much on the corporate side to revise their production methods and provide sustainable options. Hopefully by changing the way we consume and travel on a corporate scale, we can help slow down or reverse the impact we have had on the environment.

You’re also a snowboarder, what’s your relationship with mountains? I find riding very similar to art, you have the freedom to make the lines you want, where you want, whilst being totally engrossed in the environment and the activity. You’re never thinking about everyday problems when you’re riding. The same happens with painting. I enjoy the opportunity to disconnect, it’s an environment where you really are just back to being a small dot on a huge planet. It’s easy to forget that sometimes. You’ve collaborated in the past with the environmental charity Protect Our Winters. What’s your opinion about climate

“I live my life halfway between mountaineering and working as a videomaker. I don't feel like being an all-round athlete, for now the mountain is my free space”. His debut in the world of mountaineering, alongside the Bolzano-based company Salewa, was immediately noticeable making him the protagonist, last summer in Pakistan, of two high-level adventures: the first solo climb of Geshot Peak (6200 m) as well as the first climb of the Black Tooth (6718 m) together with Martin Sieberer. The climb of Geshot Peak should not have been solo, but in the company of Reinhold, also in Pakistan for filming his new movie. "The idea of climbing it came from him, since he had seen a possible route in 1970", an idea that he always set aside until today. "We should have gone up together, but the large amount of snow that fell du-

Simon knows how to stand on his own feet, without being too influenced by the paternal dimension. "I started going to the mountains late," he explains. "I was sixteen the first time I tried to climb" and he must not have being so bad at it considering what he can do now. The mountain has always been part of his life, "since I was a child I listened my dad’s stories, the epics of Walter Bonatti, the saga of the Germans on Nanga Parbat and many others" that probably stimulated his imagination so much to push

ring the past season made the route very difficult." So Simon took the decision to try it by himself, because “being solo you can manage dangers better and be faster". Also on the Black Tooth the bad weather has got in the way, complicating the games. "When we reached the top we were completely immersed in white out, we didn't see anything around us" and the descent was certainly not easy. "In addition to visibility problems we could not take the tent with us because the terrain was too steep”, there was no space to anchor it to the ground. "This is why we decided to reach the summit in just one day and then immediately started the descent and continued throughout the next night" so as not to get stuck at that height because of bad weather.

stion, but a statement. At the beginning I was surprised and I didn't know how to react, then, thinking about it, I convinced myself to embark on this new adventure".

Mountaineering as a way to be free “Climbing gives you a sense of freedom" he says. "This is why I still don't know if I want to become a true mountain professional or remain a videomaker." Simon is an anomalous mountaineer, he does not like to talk about himself through social media or bragging about his achievements. His Instagram profile remains silent for months when he is on an expedition, then he posts some photos, a couple of videos, and tells about the climb. No striking announcement accompanies his departures towards unknown places. "Inside me the strongest feelings are triggered when I land on untouched mountains in remote areas", where you can only rely on your strengths and your decision-making capacity. "Where no one can tell you what will it be, this is how I imagine the perfect climb".

Mountaineer and videomaker Today Simon is a successful videomaker, he set up a film production company with Reinhold and now realizes mountain movies. They rediscover and turn into film epic events that today are part of the history of mountaineering. However, this was not the path that a younger Simon wanted to take. After high school he devoted himself to study molecular biology, "a very interesting and promising scientific field, but unfortunately the laboratory is not my world" he explains. "Staying ten or eleven hours behind a desk is not for me, especially if the sun is shining outside." His plan, after his studies, was to find a way to "work as little as possible so that he could spend as much time as possible climbing". One day Reinhold shows up and simply tells him: let's make mountain films together. "It was not a que-

The Nose Speed Record BY FEDERICO MURA POWERED BY REEL ROCK

I

f you’re not afraid of heights or have any heart problems, in these months you can watch The Nose Speed Record on the big screen, with Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell, a film selected by Reel Rock along with The High Road with Nina Williams and United States of Joe's .

gesture takes a back seat, giving space to the priority of never falling down. It is not just about fear; a fall far from an anchor is undoubtedly a huge element of risk that has led several climbers to be victims of serious accidents. And when you find yourself so many, too many meters above an anchor, a component of coldness and concentration that only legends can have comes into play. Honnold, in a certain sense, can be defined as a trained athlete after his famous free solo climb of the Freerider route, but he had not yet come to terms with speed. Tommy Caldwell, from his side, has to deal with a totally new challenge compared to what are the responsibilities of a husband and, above all, of a father. A series of assumptions that have made worthy every single attempt, creating a story to tell.

Of course, accepting to climb a wall with the man who had left the gear at home that day is not for everyone. Tommy Caldwell is the co-star of this movie "based on a true story", The Nose Speed Record. At the other end of the rope, there’s Alex Honnold. The same 31 pitches and 870 meters of altitude that a regular climber would complete in 4 days, this time are done in just two hours. Everything is accepted. Any technique, every type of climbing, fingers in splits and pendulums. What matters is to break down the previous record, in this case held by Jim Reynolds and Brad Godbright.

The Nose Speed Record tells a story in between madness and technique, because multi pitch speed climbing is nothing more than the right balance of these two elements so important..

Reel Rock tells stories. Different stories, all united by the love for the rock. In particular in this fourteenth edition you can appreciate styles and worlds totally different from each other. Seeing three movies so similar but yet so different one after the other makes you think about how climbing has endless facets. From Nina WIliams, a boulder machine and extremely focused on performance, to United States of Joe's, which instead has a totally different approach. It talks about community. How a group of strange people, presenting themselves with a mattress on their shoulders in a hyper-conservative town in the middle of Utah, can become part of the local community by simply sharing experiences. A story that immediately turns into a metaphor applicable to infinite areas of our personal experiences.

The Nose Speed Record tells a story in between madness and technique, because multi pitch speed climbing is nothing more than the right balance of these two elements so important when you have such a difficult challenge in front of you. Perhaps you can guess the feelings you would have when finding yourself just a couple of meters above a quickdraw, with a difficult move still to be done. Well, for the Honnold-Caldwell couple the meters in question are often ten, with a potential fall of twenty. It is not mandatory not to put the gear on, it only slows you down.

There are obviously many other problems, the fact that The Nose is the most famous route can only increase its traffic, adding another component of unpredictability.

And then The Nose Speed Record, which talks about challenges, teamwork and motivation. There’s one thing we can be sure about: behind every climber, legend or not, always hides a human being.

"Saying it is totally safe would be a huge lie." Preparing a speed record has nothing to do with the preparation of a high grade route; here the technical

Oberalp Convention B Y S I LV I A G A L L I A N I

ast November 7th we were invited at the usual Oberalp Convention in Alpbach, Austria, where the Oberalp Group presented all the news for the 2020/21winter.

skis by Dynafit. But the last word was once again Ruth Oberrauch’s, who closed this record edition of the Oberalp Convention in number of participants and geographical origins, with a preview: a new brand will soon enter the ranks of the Group, but we will know more about it at next Oberalp Convention scheduled for spring 2020: we can't wait!

First to take the floor in the futuristic convention center created under the mountain profile was Ruth Oberrauch, Head of Sustainability of the Group, who presented the new Group brand, Evolv, represented directly by its founder Brian Chung.

After the presentation we had the opportunity to meet three key figures of the Oberalp Group. The already mentioned Stefan Rainer and Benedikt Böhm, in addition to Alexandra Letts, Sustainability Manager of the Group.

The latter is added to the company's historic brands, all among the industry leaders: Salewa, Pomoca, Dynafit and Wild Country. The torch then passed to Christoph Engl, CEO of the Oberalp Group, who presented the Mountain Sport Monitor, an interesting survey carried out in collaboration with Ispo and Messe München, which analyzed the purchasing choices of a group of final consumers. The panel included 1200 people, not necessarily consumers of the Oberalp brands products, but generic mountain and outdoor enthusiasts. These are important and strategic data that the Group will use for its future choices.

After the presentation we had the opportunity to meet three key figures of the Oberalp Group. The already mentioned Stefan Rainer and Benedikt Böhm, in addition to Alexandra Letts, Sustainability Manager of the Group.

The convention then continued with the interesting speeches of Stefan Rainer and Benedikt Böhm, respectively Salewa and Dynafit Brand Manager, who offered a preview of the most interesting news of the two brands: the Responsive technology for Salewa and the new Blacklight

the right degree of security. This is why we decided to develop Responsive: the first technology based on natural minerals integrated into the fabric, which recycles the energy of the human body. The reflected infrared rays penetrate the muscular system, activate the blood circulation, optimize the transport of oxygen and finally decrease the production of lactic acid by 18%.

Why did you decide to realize a Mountain Sport Monitor? Our Group has always been guided by a very strong feeling: the passion for the mountains. But the risk you can have is to only focus on one obvious aspect and losing sight or not investigate others that can be equally fundamental.

The rigorous tests of the Polytechnic University of Turin certify this effect and therefore we can say that Salewa Responsive activates your body to perform longer and recover faster. It is often nature itself that offers the best solutions.

Today the outdoor sector is still very much driven by the data coming from retailers, but there are not many feedbacks from the final consumer. We have tried to fill this gap by directly asking questions to consumers, in order to know more about their purchasing choices.

ALEXANDRA LETTS

Did you expect the results you’ve got or were you surprised by something? We had numerous confirmations. But there were also some surprises. Being a brand founded and composed of mountaineers, we have always taken for granted that the main motivation for going to the mountains was the sport itself. Instead, only 20% of people gave this answer.

What is your role in the Oberalp Group? I’ve been in this company for 15 years and initially took care of the production in the clothing department. I have gained experience regarding the supply chain, how it works, what are its dynamics, the problems and how purchases can also affect working conditions.

For the remaining 80% the real reason that drives them to the mountains is the contact with nature, a way to balance the everyday life that is increasingly digital and complex. This is a cross-generational response and we will certainly keep it in mind in our future strategies.

When in 2012 Ruth Oberrauch decided to create the sustainability department, we did it together. She led the strategy and I took care of the entire supply chain and product development. Later she asked me to take over the department, so now I'm continuing to lead the Group's sustainability strategy based on two pillars, the social part and the product part.

You mentioned an ever deeper contact with nature. This trend goes in the same direction as your latest technology, Responsive. Sure. In addition to the quantitative analysis, we studied the final consumer also in qualitative terms together with the Vienna Karmasin institute. Thanks to various focus groups, from professional mountaineers to mountain lovers, we wanted to better understand the meaning of the product and their deep unspoken desires.

Tell us something more about both parts. The social part: all the people involved at all levels are important, it is also fundamental that all the people connected to the company are aware of our standards. We have a code of conduct that must always be kept in mind while evaluating the various situations in the different countries in which our garments are produced. We have local staff that do quality control and we are helped by Fair Wear Foundation which conducts audits, certifying our commitment to improve working conditions through an assessment of the brand called Brand Performance Check.

The most important factor that emerged is the fact that people are drawn to the mountains for adventures and personal, physical and psychic experiences. In the long history of mountaineering, the entire sector has always focused on protecting people from the mountain, creating a barrier between nature and the human body. Consumer expectations instead go in the opposite direction. Those who go to the mountains want to feel nature and expose themselves with

Salewa is currently the only Italian brand member and we were ranked as "leader" for the third year in a row. The product part: we have a very strict Chemical Policy, a document that every

54

supplier must follow when realizing any of our products. We adopt more restrictive standards than the European laws and all foreign ones to which we must undergo to export abroad. We also use a significant amount of third party certified fabrics even if our long term goal is to work more on customers' trust in the brand than simply having external seals.

not giving up on anything but at the same time we also want to approach another type of consumer in order to inspire more and more people to practice this sport. You have expanded your product segment to cycling. We are born as a ski mountaineering brand so we were able to cover only one season at time in the past, now we use the same materials and technologies for cycling in order to be present throughout the year.

The data you have gathered says that today the consumer is extremely sensitive to sustainability issues, do you think the market will go more and more in that direction? Nowadays sustainability seems to be a trend, but for us it has always been a fundamental theme that we pursue everyday with more and more energy. It is not an abstract concept and there is a lot of confusion about it: in our survey, the average of consumers put sustainability at the 6th place in order of importance, but what they considered the most fundamental was the quality of the products and the the fact that these last for a long time, but this is also part of the concept of sustainability!

Our 2020 capsule collection worked really good, beyond our expectations. This goes hand in hand with modern sportsmen who do not only practice one sport during a season but maybe they do multiple sports. What about the new Blacklight? We wanted to go back to our origins with something lightweight and performing at the same time, we wanted skis suitable even for the most difficult mountains, like the Gasherbrum where we tested them. Our ambition was to return strongly to the market and Blacklight is currently the lightest and most performing product in the industry. Full carbon, wood core, 900 grams. I think it will really become a top line for the next couple of winters.

Our motto "contribute" addresses a common goal. Every little choice counts. The future will make the consumer more responsible and aware in the use phase, while at the same time changing the purchasing model. Creating fewer products but better, in order for people to buy less stuff but that will last over time. We have in fact reduced the apparel collection from 420 models to 290 and also the number of fabrics used because they have been consolidated over time. If there are fabrics left from production, they can be used the following year, if there is a stock of continuous items they are sold the next year. All this translates into a lower environmental impact.

Another news was the boots, bindings and skis set-up. The goal is to simplify this sport, nowadays there are different categories in each discipline and, for example, for a skier it can be difficult to approach ski mountaineering because the gears are different. Our new set-up can help you in this situation, offering a high quality at a great competitive price. It will be available not only in our flagship stores but even in rental stations and online. History has always proved that when things get easier you never go back. It is important because in order to go on you need to keep this sport interesting and easily approachable by everyone.

BENEDIKT BÖHM In previous years you were mainly focused on athletes, competitions and performance, now you seem to be looking to expand your collection to those approaching the mountains for the first time. It is partly true, in the past we were mainly focused on athletes and we still are. The brand call is “by athletes for athletes” so our positioning remains the same, we're

Future projects? You will see a lot of new and interesting things in the 2021-22 boots sector. In the ski line everything is new while the entire binding range will be also revised over next year. Apparel is on ongoing as well as the cycling and trail running part, we have lot of things to do all year long!

Danner Boots: Go There B Y S I LV I A G A L L I A N I P H OTO S BY G A R R E T T K I N G , RYA N F I E L D , S I LV I A G A L L I A N I

There are three journalists: one from California, one from New York and one from Italy. It sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it's simply how our Swiss journey with Danner Boots began. The American brand invited us to try the new Danner Arctic 600 with Vibram Arctic Grip sole during some top secret activities that were revealed to us just once as we reached our final destination.

58

Our starting point, the folkloristic little town of Gstaad, part of the municipality of Saanen in the German-speaking section of the Canton of Bern. A ski resort developed since the 1900s, it is a popular destination amongst high society and the international jet set thanks to the numerous ski slopes and mountain shelters, but it is also frequented throughout the year. I comfortably arrive there from Milan in a 4 hours train ride, during a still sunny afternoon in early October. My adventure mates are a little less fortunate and had to embark an intercontinental flight with consequent jet lag. However I am a bit worried, in fact, I have mixed feelings: I am certainly happy for this opportunity and excited to be in the Alps, ready for another mountain adventure, but at the same time I am also a little nervous and intimidated for being the only Italian among Americans. All my fears, however, vanish as soon as I meet the other journalists, Lauren and Matt, and Erin and Tara from Danner US in addition to Garrett and Ryan, the photographers who will follow us these days, that immediately let me feel like part of group of friends. Just the time to exchange a few words and information and I already feel like I’ve know them for a long time. The passion for living life outdoor is our common denominator and the reason why Danner brought us here together. Go There is the campaign of the US brand that celebrates the desire for an unexplored adventure through the stories of travellers, pioneers, adventurers and simple outdoor enthusiasts. An invitation and an encouragement for everyone to lace their boots, get out and experience nature, not through travels and stories of other people but in first person, wherever your spirit of adventure will take you, whether the Columbia River Gorge’s limitless waterfalls or the Bernese Alps.

First stop is the Les Diablerets glacier at 3000 m high. At the bottom of the valley the sun was shining, while up here what greets us is a lunar landscape swept by gusts of wind.

And it is precisely here that Danner led us, our base camp is Huus Gstaad, a wonderful cottage nestled among the gentle peaks of the Bernese Alps. We are in a sunny hillside location that boasts the best views of the surrounding peaks. Comfortable and familiar, we immediately feel at home and the atmosphere abducts us, but we do not have time to relax too much as Simon, our Swiss guide, shows up, he’s going to accompany us for the next two days. First stop is the Les Diablerets glacier at 3000 m high. At the bottom of the valley the sun was shining, while up here what greets us is a lunar landscape swept by gusts of wind. In front of us only a blanket of immaculate snow, it’s definitely cold. We pull up our hoods and tighten the laces of our boots. Seen from the sky we certainly would look like little dots that advance in the middle of the white. We are ready for our hike.

The bitter cold of the glacier gives us an overwhelming sense of freedom that makes us forget the extreme condition that surrounds us. Up here you can enjoy 75 kilometers of marked alpine routes and trails.

... trails. From easy family excursions to more challenging alpine routes or via ferratas. We venture to the Glacier Walk, a hike that from Scex Rouge leads us to Quille du Diable and which is open all year round. We cross one by one the 107 meters of the suspension bridge, unique in the world, which connects the two peaks of the mountain. Below us a 3000 m void, a one of a kind experience that allows you to look directly out onto the Les Diablerets glacier, revealing a panoramic view of the highest mountains in the area, Matterhorn, Mönch, Jungfrau and Eiger. Not recommended for those afraid of heights!

It's time to put our Arctic 600 to test, they proved to be the ideal ally of this adventure. Comfortable and very warm thanks to the Primaloft insulation and the Danner Dry waterproof membrane, they keep me firmly anchored to the ground thanks to the Vibram Arctic Grip sole, while maintaining my foot warm and dry.

I could have walked for hours in my Danner boots so when we get to l’Espace refuge I’m definitely warm and I would like to go on that immaculate blanket. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Derborance valley and the entire Canton of Valais. In the end I get persuaded to enter by a Tomme Fleurette with Rougemont cheese and roast potatoes. Early wake up call the following day. Simon is waiting for us to take us to the Wildhorn, straddling the border between the Swiss cantons of Bern and Valais. The 3,248 m high mountain offers everything we could wish for, paths cut into the cliffs, steep ascents up on scree-covered slopes, a climb through loose stones, several descents down vertical ladders in quick succession, many small mountain lakes, a walk among aconites and edelweiss, the amazing panoramic view of the Plaine Morte glacier, Diablerets, Mont-Blanc, Grand Combin and the summit around Val d'Hérens, through a maze of white rocks with lots of stunning waterfalls descending vertiginous walls. This little gem of the Bernese Alps was first climbed in September 1843 by Gottlieb Samuel Studer. The easiest ascent route starts from Lake Iffig and via the Wildhornhütte. Unlike the previous day, today is clear and bright. Simon points out to me an unspecified place in the distance, after the mountains: "Milan is over there, only 30 minutes away by helicopter!" He says it as if it were around the corner, yet here, on this summit surrounded by nothing but snow and my fellow adventurers, I feel as far away from home as I have ever been. Go there. Now I fully understand the essence of the Danner campaign. Running away from the crowd and the daily routine in search of an adventure, whether big or small, but that makes you feel in harmony with nature, able to resist to its most extreme conditions, but always aware that, with the right allies, no obstacle in your journey will be insurmountable. We put the crampons on and in single file we reach the top of the mountain. At the highest point of the summit, a well-deserved breakfast awaits us, bread, Swiss cheese and jam. We toast with our Danner cups full of hot tea and instant coffee. This adventure has come to an end.

I

t's election time in Canada. In our hotel some polling stations have been set up and the citizens have lined up in a row to express their opinion on who should lead the government of their country. According to the polls, the possibility that Andrew Scheer, called by someone the 'Canadian Trump', wins is concrete. “I like our prime minister Trudeau, because he's moderate. I really fear that the right-wing candidate could win” our guide Darcy tells us.

it is good to specify it, considering who he is dealing with: Europeans, used to going to the mountains often to enjoy polenta, pizzoccheri and beer. During these days of hikes we don't even find a shelter. People of all ages just out of school or from the office pass us by with a decisive step, headed for a happy hour at high altitude: once there they just take their stuff out of their backpacks, feast, clean everything minutely and then go down. “Within Banff National Park there are only a couple of places that work like in Europe, where you can order food and drinks. In the other ones you have to bring your own food, drinks and sleeping bag” explains the guide. Here the spaces are endless and the population density is very low (3.79 people/km² compared to Italy with its 199.82 people/km²).

We are in Banff, the most famous and most ancient natural park in Canada and the fourth oldest in the world, after the Bogd Khan Uul National Park, Mongolia (1783), the Yellowstone National Park, USA (1872) and the Royal National Park, Australia (1879) . Declared a Unesco World Heritage Site, it stretches between the Rocky Mountains on an area of 6,641 km² and is located 128 km west of the city of Calgary. We are here to do some 'plogging': a neologism invented in Sweden formed by the words “plocka upp” (collect) and “jogging”, it is a sport activity which consists in collecting waste while running, combining physical exercise and cleaning environment. We - the journalists - have crampons and countless layers on, they - the locals - are in shorts and sneakers. We cross coniferous forests and wonderful alpine views. But they give us no satisfaction. In three days of walking up and down the slopes we don't even find a cigarette, while our Alps are full of them. Here sustainability is part of the national knowledge heritage since before the word "sustainability" was coined. Nature is wild and powerful and children are taught to respect it. A country in line with the values of Gore-Tex, which perhaps for this reason has chosen it to offer us the possibility of testing the jackets made with the new Gore-Tex Pro technology, created to be resistant, elastic, breathable and waterproof and to protect against the most extreme weather conditions. “Taking care of clothes significantly extends their life cycle and is one of the most relevant elements for having a sustainable product” said Bernhard Kiehl, Gore Fabrics Sustainability Leader. “It is important to pay attention when cleaning the jacket: remember to close the zips and pockets, then simply hand wash it or use a washing machine at medium temperature and then let it air dry, in order to not to use other sources of energy. All the details are shown on our website”.

The landscape is super wild, characterized by waterfalls, lakes, glaciers, caves, canyons and mountain peaks. Pure air stimulates creativity. Perhaps the unspoiled nature was the muse of the Banff Mountain Film Festival: born in the city of Banff in 1976, it is probably the most important mountain film and book event in the world, with international guests, authors, directors, mountaineers, climbers and explorers from every corner of the globe. “I'm very satisfied: Electric Greg, my documentary, is competing in the Banff Mountain Film Festival world tour: it will reach more than 45 countries, about 550 cities and I hope it will inspire people”. Greg Hill, freerider and Gore-tex ambassador, tells us during the hike. As his short film recounts, the athlete saw the effects of climate change in person and realized that the way he was approaching the mountains was aggravating the problem. So he changed his approach and lifestyle. Now he travels by electric car, he is vegetarian from Monday to Friday and climbs the peaks without burning fossil fuels. Greg is in good company. During these days we got to know two other athletes involved in reducing their environmental impact, both Gore-tex ambassadors: the climber Stefan Glowacz and the mountaineer Tamara Lunger. Stefan realized a sustainable expedition from the beginning till the end, starting from his home in Munich by electric car, sailing on the Atlantic and skiing on the eternal Greenland ice. As we walk, Tamara Lunger tells us that she has just returned from Mongolia, where she discovered, on foot, the country and its exceptional nomadic people who live in a simple and authentic way. “I felt an extraordinary connection with people and nature there and when I got back to the city I had a lot of nostalgia. I felt very loved in that wild environment and I experienced a sense of pure freedom”. The feeling that Tamara had on the other side of the Earth seem incredibly close to those experienced in Canada. We wake up the next morning and Darcy, our guide, breathes a sigh of relief. Trudeau has won the elections.

We walk immersed in a Zen silence. A group of bright red jackets: we have many red fruits, ideal as a snack of a grizzly or a puma, two of the 53 species of mammals that inhabit the Banff National Park. These woods are home, among others, to moose, bison, coyotes, reindeer, wolves, foxes, deer, Canadian lynx and ibex. This incredible diversity of wildlife is a reflection of the many habitats found in the park, due to variations in altitude, climate and flora. In order to avoid becoming a predator's snack, a spary is given to each one of us before the hike to keep bears away. And here we are on the shores of the beautiful Lake Louise: a spell seems to have taken possession of it. The freshly fallen snow magically envelops the landscape. We head towards the Tea House. “Don't expect to find pastries or teapots!” The guide warns us. And

The landscape is super wild, characterized by waterfalls, lakes, glaciers, caves, canyons and mountain peaks. Pure air stimulates creativity.

Alex Megos BY FEDERICO MURA P OW E R E D BY PATAG O N I A

I enter the Kletterzentrum, Innsbruck's impressive climbing gym surrounded by the Tyrolean Alps. The atmosphere is strange: even if it’s not my first time here, every time I’m amazed that the many people here seem not to realize the incredible beauty of this place, both for the infrastructure and for for the landscape that can be seen beyond the windows. I reach the reception desk accompanied by Matts, Patagonia Sports Marketing Guru. I ask him how big our group of journalists will be. "Not so big actually," he replies with his British accent. We enter the lobby, and if it weren't for the five-plus-size dimensions, the atmosphere is exactly the same as in my gym close to my home in Turin. With only one difference: under the wall of speed climbing there is one of the strongest climbers in the world. I approach him and introduce myself to Alex and his girlfriend Jenya, we chat about the speed climbing cast iron and how easy it is to get a fine by only parking in the streets of Innsbruck. If there is one thing I like about the climbing world it is how relaxed the community is. Talking with Alex was exactly like hanging around with my best climbing buddy. I warm up a bit with a slightly confused mind: where is the horde of journalists I was expecting? Alex Megos is training with his girlfriend, and then there’s me. This was not specified in the agency's email... But that's okay, of course it's okay! I enter the bouldering area and meet nothing less than Norbert Sandner, along with the legendary Wolfgang Güllich, one of the founders of the Rotpunkt philosophy. I could say that all the people here in the gym working on a project, in one way or another, owe it to him. With his arm just healed from an operation and his fitness certainly no longer at the levels of when he was twenty years old, he

climbs incredibly high grades with great style in front of my eyes. Everything is quickly explained when he tells me about his climbs with Wolfgang and the seasons spent with him studying new routes. Once I warm up my forearms I add myself to the group and after a few minutes I am still amazed at how normal the situation looks. One thing that strikes me is how Alex is just a guy who wants to have fun, being an internationally renowned champion seems to be only a consequence of his ability to climb, and above all something he likes a lot. All his irony comes out during the presentation of the Rotpunkt movie the same evening. The audience laughs hard for most of the time because of all the funny jokes between Alex and Norbert. Very strong, as we all know, and very humble, so humble to help climbing a guy known just a couple of hours before on a sweaty 6b+ Sitting on the steps of the lobby facing the walls of colored holds of the Kletterzentrum I activated my best journalist mode, although occasionally interrupted by some girls looking for autographs, and asked him a few questions. Your climbing style is impressive; often to reach a hold you stay on the wall thanks to the strength of your fingers alone, and for this reason many people do not hesitate to call you "The Machine", but how important is the psychological component of climbing for you? In my training the psychological part is certainly very important, perhaps more than the physical one. When climbing hard you always have to be focused and keep motivation high. Especially when you're in front of a project, your brain needs to be 100% focused on it. Very often the psychological part for me is much more difficult to manage than the physical one.

70

In tonight's film, you’ve been defined as Wolfgang Gßllich's successor. We are talking about the guy who revolutionized training and preparation in order to push his limits even higher. What is your feeling about physical preparation? I personally have a lot of fun with muscle strengthening training. If you train hard, then you can climb hard. I use it as an excuse to have even more fun on the wall. It's part of the game. However, you must not forget the other two parts of climbing: as we have said before, the psychological part, and the technique. One of the secrets for climbing hard is to balance your workouts by considering these three aspects of climbing. As far as I am concerned, in the past I have been too focused on physical training, and only in the last few years I have learned to manage all the parts of the training in this way achieving decidedly more satisfactory performances. And what aspects related to Wolfgang Gßllich do you like best and would you like to apply to yourself? He was a visionary. And already thirty years ago he was thinking of pushing performance to the maximum, trying to raise the grades further. Whenever he managed to climb a new grade he didn't consider it only as a goal, but used it as a starting point for the next level. It was a constant challenge to himself. This is what made him a legend, climbing the first 8c of the history, and a few years after the first 9a. This is the philosophy I try to draw from him and I try to make mine. Have you ever thought of being the next one to raise the bar? Honestly no, I focus on my limit and the most important part of climbing: fun. I only think about climbing to the limit of my possibilities, and about climbing what I like the most. If you think too much beyond what your level is, you will end up not having fun anymore. Climbing hard I realized that climbing is 99% failure, and only 1% success. But that 1% is what keeps you training, climbing and having fun. In that 99% of failure, the challenge

is you against the rock or you against yourself? The challenge is mainly against myself. When you give up one route the reasons are mainly two: either you are physically too weak to deal with it, or you have lost motivation. When I climb I have to feel the wall, and I don't see in the rock a component of challenge, rather of collaboration. The rock and I must become one. What about competitions? As a kid I took part in many competitions, but then I focused on outdoor climbing. In recent years I have always climbed to try new types of rock, and working on increasingly interesting projects. From next year, however, I will start again with indoor competitions due to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Indoor or outdoor? I grew up climbing at the crag, and for this reason my favorite style is definitely the outdoor one. As you will see in Rotpunkt, in recent times I have faced with different challenges, such as my highest grade, the 9b+ of Perfecto Mundo. I have never confronted myself with a project that took so much time and energy, but it was a unique experience of sharing and collaboration with Stefano Ghisolfi, my trainer Ludwig Korb and with all the other members of the team who were with me. What aspects of Patagonia do you like the most? The whole brand is great. I've been sponsored by them for a long time, since I was 16 years old. I really like Patagonia's approach to the environmental problem. They are using a great deal of energy not only to create a production system that is as much sustainable as possible with several tangible projects like Worn Wear, but they are also carrying out various communication campaigns that are aimed at raising awareness among as many people as possible on this issue. One of the reasons I like it is precisely this: it has made it clear to many people, including myself, that we have to change something in our lifestyle. Something to add? I think that... today we trained damn hard, right ?! We're pumped, we look good, and we're ready for next time!

The North Face Futurelight B Y S I LV I A G A L L I A N I

73

The first one to try it was Jim Morrison, part of The North Face team, who put it to test in extreme conditions by climbing and skiing Everest and Cho Oyu in the Himalayas and completing the first complete ski descent of Lhotse Couloir together with Hilaree Nelson. We are talking about Futurelight, TNF’s new breathable and waterproof membrane to date that, thanks to a unique production method called nanospinning, allows air to flow through the fabric for an incomparable transpiration, guaranteeing at the same time great porosity and absolute impermeability.

T

his new nano-fiber structure allows the passage of air, ensuring greater ventilation and breathability without sacrificing waterproofness and resistance. The result is a very light, ultra-thin, flexible and comfortable fabric that guarantees protection from the elements required in the most hostile environments. Nanodimensional fibers are created thanks to more than 200,000 nozzles that deposit a polyurethane solution onto a surface where it’s collected in a randomized matrix to create the membrane. The solution is then used to create a breathable-waterproof film that is bonded to backer and face fabrics. These nano-sized fibers are small enough to allow air to flow through a membrane while keeping water out. Furthermore, depending on the specific needs of athletes and consumers, various parameters can be modified and adapted during the manufacturing process such as weight, breathability, elasticity and durability of the garment according to the different type of activity and environmental conditions. A possibility that has no precedent in the sector and that over the last two years has been tested by mountaineers, climbers, trail runners and snowboarders of the TNF team all over the world, in every type of activity and in different climates and weather conditions, also the most extreme. Futurelight technology, launched in the 2019 fall, is currently available for jackets, tents and gloves but the possibilities are endless and in the future t-shirts, sweatshirts or even jeans that use the same membrane could arrive. “We are starting with jackets and outdoor apparel, but we won't stop there” said Scott Mellin, TNF Global General Manager of Mountain Sports. “This innovative technology can theoretically make anything breathable, waterproof and comfortable. This is paving the way for the future of technical fabrics and provides endless possibilities across The North Face product categories”. TNF Futurelight also takes into account sustainability, a theme that has always been dear to the brand. The process of creating fabrics in fact follows an innovative methodology that uses three layers of recycled fabrics and a production that takes place in a clean energy plant as it is powered by solar energy and that significantly reduces the use of chemical components.

Every products is then tested by Underwiter Labs, a world-renowned, safety science company with more than 120 years of expertise testing fire and hazmat suits, which certifies the conformity of firefighter gear, emergency medical personnel and the units responsible for the management of hazardous substances. Futurelight has passed all the tests very well, during which over 200 gallons of water were dumped onto the garment per hour. Subsequently the products with Futurelight technology passed into the hands of the professional athletes of the The North Face team who tested them for over 400 continuous days in the most demanding and extreme conditions on the planet. Now, the new TNF waterproof and breathable material is available for everyone in the Summit Series, Steep Series and Flight Series, and ready to revolutionize the outdoor market.

“Product innovation, pushing the boundaries and having the courage to disrupt have been a part of The North Face DNA since our company was founded over 50 years ago,” Mellin continued. “For far too long, we have been forced to adapt to our clothing and environment. With the introduction of Futurelight, we are finally offering clothing that adapts to our needs. The introduction of this fabric is a pivotal moment for our brand, for the future of the apparel industry, and for consumers who will no longer need to sacrifice comfort or air permeability for waterproof protection”.

A talk with Yulia Baykova I T W BY DAV I D E F I O R AS O POWERED BY MASTERS - VIBRAM

-

Explosive, stubborn, strong athlete. In 2015, due to fulminant myocarditis, she risked losing her life. In a few months, with strong determination, she picked up where she left off. Yulia's story is one of a kind, she was reborn when the doctors gave her no more hope.

We spent two days in her company at the Masters Clinic&Run, an event created to learn about and better understand what is the model of poles most suited to your needs and your running technique. But let's start from the beginning. “I died on February 3rd 2015”. Just a few words that leaves you stunned, a punch in the stomach that you don't expect. But she, Yulia Baykova, an important member the Vibram Team and Masters ambassador, says it with great serenity. That same feeling of who is not afraid anymore. Years ago her story moved the whole trail running world, including myself. Why? Just stay with her for a few hours; it will be natural to like her.

Yulia was born in Latvia to Russian parents. Since 2005 she lives with her husband Vincenzo Bertina in Novara and together they share the organization of the Ultra Trail of Lago d’Orta. “I started running when I moved to Italy. I looked at the green meadows in the winter season and thought it would be nice to run over it. In my home country, snow and ice make the landscape grey, monotonous. The scent of grass and wet earth

made me fall in love with this sport”. Together with Vincenzo, Yulia began to train on medium distances and to experience the first long runs, immersed in the nature of her woods. “He looked at me and told me: well, you run fast” she recalls. “And when I tried my first half marathon I realized that the asphalt wasn't my piece of cake: it was so boring.” In December 2011 Yulia took part in her first official trail, in the Sierra de Chiva, Spain. It was love at first sight “I ran for 63 kilometers, it seemed endless, but despite my fatigue I was dazzled. I discovered a new world, I understood that this was my sport”. That moment was her turning point. Yulia, with great determination and willpower, decided to devote herself to that sport even more until she became a great athlete of international fame. “I never thought of becoming an ultrarunner; as a teenager I dreamed of being a rock star. I played the drums in a band and my goal was to study music at Boston’s Berkley. Let's say that part of the dream came true: I continued to follow the rhythm of another music, the one of my steps and my breath”. Words that immediately bring to mind the UTLO 2019’s promo video, where she is the protagonist: 78

Years ago her story moved the whole trail running world, including myself. Why? Just stay with her for a few hours; it will be natural to like her.

>> [...] The same doctors who had initially lost hope of saving her, but who, seeing her clinging to life with such force, attempted the impossible. Yulia resisted, fought.

“Running is the only thing that matters. I compose my symphony one step after another”.

So far nothing strange. Yulia’s story is the one of a young athlete who carries on the dream of her life. But the cold shower arrived in January 2015. “We were in Castiglion Fiorentino for the Ronda Ghibellina. The day of the race I got up and I wasn’t feeling well. I thought I was just nervous, just a little weak so I decided to run anyway”. Yulia imagined it was just a typical seasonal influence. But in the following days the situation got worse. At the umpteenth round in the emergency room Yulia fainted, her heart gave way. “I was reborn sixteen days later thanks to the doctors at the Le Molinette hospital in Turin, who did everything they could to keep me alive.” The same doctors who had initially lost hope of saving her, but who, seeing her clinging to life with such force, attempted the impossible. Yulia resisted, fought. And finally she opened her eyes and woke up. All her organs started working again. “I wanted to get out of that place with my strength. That wasn't my place. The sacrifices and training for long distance runs had taught me to go on, to not give up. Like when you face a climb and you're exhausted, but you grit your teeth and go on because you have to reach your goal”. A long and tiring physical rehabilitation began, complicated by a lung out of play. “I had to learn how to breathe again” recalls Yulia. After four months she was at the start of the Lavaredo Ultra Trail, where she run a part of the race. 18 symbolic kilometers, but she was there. “It was my obsession. Getting out of the hospital, being able to run and enjoying freedom through my senses. I wanted to smell the scents, see the blue sky and embrace the earth”. Meanwhile, the Vi-

bram Team didn’t stop believing in her: “I'll wait for you”, Jerome Bernard promised her. And Yulia didn’t make him wait long, she went back to Cortina d'Ampezzo the following year finishing 10th in the queen race, 120 km and 5800 of positive gradient. 2016 was a wonderful year, with the podium at the Vibram Maremontana and a 6h place at the CCC. “After everything that had happened I had to try. I wanted to show everyone that it's always worth fighting for your dreams. Nobody believed I could succeed.” Nowadays Yulia is fine and her heart has returned as strong as before. 2019 brought her a 5th place at the Scenic Trail and at the EcoTrail de Paris, a 3rd place at the Grand Trail Courmayeur, a 13th place at the UTMB. In May, Masters announced its entry into the ambassadors team. A pure coincidence for her, who, as a Nordic walking instructor, had always relied on their products. “Some elements of Nordic walking are useful in the race. With moderate slopes, up to 15%, I use the classic technique of the alternating step. On the steepest slopes double support comes into play”. Meanwhile, we run past the former Costalunga quarry. “A Poe o sventa o pioe” (in Pove when there’s not wind, it rains) tells a popular saying. This is not how things are today. Strong gusts come out of the Valbrenta canal. It's raining cats and dogs. But it doesn't matter, because we are immersed in a magnificent autumnal landscape, on paths along the coast, rocky walls and tunnels that dug into the rock. At the Madonna del Cornon we take the mule track that leads back to the village. Here comes the descent and we put our poles away. Yulia looks at me and smiles: "What do you think? Shall we run?” Let’s run. 80

MASTERS TRECIME CARBON FIX Yulia runs with Masters Trecime Carbon Fix. The perfect model for those who like Yulia know exactly the size they need, with the advantage of reducing the weight of the pole and being able to fold it quickly when not using it. 4 sections, one 100% carbon ø 14mm, two in Calutech ø 12mm and one in Alutech 7075 ø 12mm. Push-pull system in the first section, the rest are connected by the useful probe mechanism. The hawk knob ensures a perfect grip and the tungsten tip guarantees a secure traction on any terrain.

Shelter Movie BY M AT T EO R O S SATO POWERED BY PICTURE ORGANIC CLOTHING

ST E P P I N G FO RWA R D T H R O U G H T H E LEGENDARY ALPS

• Somewhere in the wild expanse of the French Alps, our group of five friends, split boards and climbing skins underfoot, marvel at the vast untracked mountain faces and the majesty of the surrounding peaks. As they go back to the shelter where they will spend the night, an old hoarse voice off-screen starts talking. The story starts here.

83

84

* B

ut let's take a step back. Shelter was born from the collaboration between Almo Films and Picture Organic Clothing, which had already given life to Zabardast, a mountain movie set on the high peaks of Pakistan. Behind both projects, there has always been first of all a concept and a clear objective, even before a considerable video production. Sustainability and environmental protection are the common thread that unites the two projects and that constitutes the foundation of Picture, which has always been committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products. Shelter seeks to capture the the essential nature of the mountains by exploring the hidden valleys and remote peaks of the Alps, far from the hustle and bustle of the world’s largest ski resorts. To carry out this mission, five friends - motivated by a passion and love for the mountains - travel from hut to hut, observing firsthand the impact of climate change on the Alps. To mitigate the effects, a now unavoidable issue in daily life, they start by changing their approach to the mountains and how they live their passion. The five friends are Jeremy Jones, Mat Schaer, Leo Taillefer, Levi Luggen and Thomas Delfino. Jeremy Jones needs no introduction: freeride legend, he has cleared the concept of backcountry not only as a technical gesture, but in a more exploratory sense and as a way of experiencing nature in its purest essence. Thanks to his impressive technical level, he has inspired many snowsports enthusiasts during his career and can be defined as one of the splitboarding pioneers.

«Mountain huts located in such high places are a real treat. They offer the chance to enjoy a restful night’s sleep in a warm comfortable bed and head out full bore on the next day’s ascent.» With a genuine love for the mountains, Mat Schaer is fervent advocate for the environment and an expert on the topic. He continually pushes for an eco-friendly approach to snowboarding and sees the Alps as are a fantastic mountain playground offering an infinite number of possibilities for human-powered exploration.

«Mountain huts provide the means to access a fantastic vertical playground still relatively unexplored by freeride skiers and snowboarders. Sleeping in these remote places provides the chance to disconnect from our modern, fast-paced, hyperconnected world, to marvel at the incredible landscapes at dusk and to meet new people who share the same passion.» Honest and spontaneous, Leo Taillefer brings a lighthearted sense of awareness to every adventure he embarks upon. The ideal travel partner, he is always game to push the edge of the envelope. He is also particularly fond of the environment and the great outdoors, which he does his best to respect every day.

«Mountain huts are peaceful places where you feel so close to Mother Nature. They offer the chance to get back to the basics, to truly enjoy the simple things in life. Social classes disappear and you can just be yourself. Being in a hut also means a front-row seat to scaling the surrounding mountains.»

86

Passionate and extremely motivated, Levi Luggen has made a name for himself in backcountry snowboarding over the past few years. He became the de facto guide during this particular adventure and he enthusiastically dragged our protagonists to the wildest and most remote corners of the upper Valais Valley.

«You savor the descent so much more when you earn it. Nothing tastes better than good meal while sitting next to the fireplace after a long ascent, just waiting in anticipation for the next day’s turns. Huts might not be luxurious, but nothing is more breathtaking than watching the sunrise from the mountain tops right before you arc turns down an amazing snow-covered face.» Born with a passion for the mountains, Thomas Delfino is a main character in the rebirth of snowboarding, his primary focus today is on the environment and he has big plans to make a difference.

«Backcountry has become much more popular and accessible today, and mountain huts offer the chance to explore remote, isolated terrain. It also rhymes with respect for the great outdoor because these places are open to everyone all year long, and making little to no impact means respecting others and the environment.» But there are still other actors in this story that deserve mention. Julien Roserens & Morgan Le Faucheur, aka Almo Film. After a long career as a pro snowboarder, Morgan has chosen the camera as an expressive medium and for over 10 years has been realizing documentaries and projects related to its natural element, the mountain. Together with Julien, they constitute an infinite resource of imagination and ability, becoming a fundamental element for the realization - together with Picture - of Zabardast first and then of Shelter. Møme aka Jeremy Souillart, the conductor. The one who composed the soundtrack for Shelter. After the success of Aloha in 2015, he now travels throughout Europe bringing his electronic music to major festivals. Last but not least Serge. Serge embodies the conscience of the mountains. He is the storyteller, the voice that accompanies the five friends on their journey through pristine shelters and valleys. Serge knows the Valais area’s history like the back of his hand, having witnessed first-hand the evolution of the territory and the drastic climate changes. Shelter is not only the story of a journey in the midst of nature, but also of unexpected encounters, exchange of opinions and so much spontaneity. The beautiful images wisely interspersed with archive photos cast the truth before our eyes and make us think. From the world-renowned Great St. Bernard Hospice, our protagonists will travel the Alps using only their legs to power them, hitching the occasional ride on legendary trains like the Glacier Express. Ready and determined to face the impact of climate change and its devastating effect on the environment, they will pass through such amazing locations as the Vanoise Range, Testa del Rutor, and even the village of Mont-Noble, to learn more about the secrets of the high-alpine valleys. So many places filled with a history that bears witness to the passage of time and the ever-changing mountain environment, inspiring the five adventurers and - thanks to Picture that made it possible - hopefully a good part of those who will watch Shelter.

ITW DENIS PICCOLO PHOTO ALICE RUSSOLO POWERED BY NIKE

Beyond every effort, driven by emotions. A physicist and an engineer. Francesco and Cesare are part of the Mountain Running Italian National Team and together flew to Patagonia where they won two silver medals. Having recently entered the ranks of the Nike athletes, they pursue their dreams through trails, fatigue and love for running. We asked them to tell us more about their emotions.

Francesco Puppi

Cesare Maestri

Tell me something about yourself.

You can call me Supertramp. Just joking! Or maybe Fra. Or France, or @fra_puppinho. Anyway, I was born in 1992, on the other branch of Lake Como. Human, athlete, physicist. I am a physicist in the most classic sense of the term, I studied to understand and interpret nature, which is very interesting and written in a mathematical language: simple ideas but of huge importance that I try to teach to my high school students. I am an athlete, running has always been the essence of my life and being an athlete means trying every day to improve and to find a balance, taking care of my body, being free, living with a very intimate and sensitive friend, fatigue. I am human because I have two wonderful sisters and a brother, I live with my girlfriend, Gloria, and I have relationships that cross any border. These three aspects are inseparable and make me what I am.

I'm a simple person, an engineer, an athlete. In everything I do, I try to do my best and constantly get myself into the game, facing challenging goals. I live in Borgo Lares, in Trentino, a small mountain village, although I spend the whole week in Trento for work. I recently turned 26 and in 2018 I graduated in energy engineering. I work with renewable energy and energy savings, I like to think that this is also in a certain way linked to my sport activity: pursuing a more sustainable future that respects the environment and our mountains. My family has given me the passion for the mountains and for sport, they have always supported me in everything and for this I will never thank them enough.

How, when and why did you become a runner?

It's very simple, as a child I used to play and run with other children, then at some point we started practicing athletics, always for fun, at the Guanzate field. I haven't stopped since then.

It all started about ten years ago when a special person saw some good qualities in me and convinced me to start running. He was my first coach and unfortunately he left us the following year because of a bad illness. Since that day I have never stopped and now I am a real runner. I like to run, on any terrain, depending on the time available, on the seasons and on where I am.

89

90

How is your typical day?

That changes depending on the season, even if I would like to change more often, waking up and always doing something different! When I teach, I'm typically at school all morning. Sometimes, if necessary, I train before entering the classroom. I dedicate the afternoon to preparing lessons, correcting homework and carrying out the thousand activities that the school requires, then, usually around the evening, I train. There is not always much time and I try to manage it with the help of my girlfriend who is an athlete like me and has needs similar to mine. After dinner, with little energy left, I often write or read, then it's time to sleep. It is very important to rest for someone who, like me, was born tired!

Trail and road, tell me their differences from your point of view.

On the trail side, the references are few and often subjective, what’s important is the balance between aerobic qualities, endurance and strength. On the road side the elastic components and the rhythm become fundamental. I love them and practice them both, my running motto is run on #anysurfaceavailable!

The road imposes a high and constant rhythm, the automatic repetition of the same gesture, always in search of fluidity and efficiency in the action. I constantly keep track of the speed and the chronometer and I believe that road running is fundamental even for those who want to run fast in the mountains. On the trail the search for rhythm is linked to the interpretation of the terrain, the variables are many and the ability to move on technical routes comes into play. The off-road landscapes are often suggestive and the mix between running and nature is fantastic. I like both of them, but in the summer I spontaneously move to trail running!

Which shoe do you use for running on trail and which one for the road? What is your feeling with these shoes?

I use the Nike Pegasus Trail on trails. In this time of the year, when the temperatures drop, I prefer its waterproof version in Gore-Tex that keeps your feet dry. The Pegasus Trail is comfortable and protective, although equally responsive: I consider it excellent for a door-totrail on mixed terrain. On roads, my ally against low temperatures is the Nike Pegasus 36 Shield which guarantees the same fit as the Gore-Tex version.

On trail I use a lot the Nike Pegasus Trail, it has a similar response of a road shoe and at the same time a good grip to deal with the more technical traits. If the conditions of the terrain gets worse the most suitable shoe is the Nike Pegasus Trail Gore-Tex that allows you a safe support even in the most slippery sections! On roads I love the Nike Pegasus 36 Shield, they have incredible responsiveness and cushioning and are perfect for my winter training.

You achieved a great result in your last race in Patagonia, can you tell us how it went?

I knew I was feeling good, in the three months before the race my preparation had been excellent. I expected to be able to fight for the podium, even if the result in a world championship is never a given, because of technical level and difficulty. Patagonia was an inspiration, the perfect mirror of my mood, this was important for me. In the race I wanted to stand out immediately, on the first climb there were only the American Jim Walmsley and I. I was afraid to lose but I decided to risk it, I didn't think we would run so fast! It was just something between Jim and I. We have gone beyond the limit that I could imagine. We met in the intensity of the competition. Our race lasted over three hours and it was exciting, extraordinary, very hard. I was happy, and even Jim was, we were genuinely happy with what we shared in the race. He won.

It was a great result, I was pursuing this dream all season and in the race, when I realized that a great result could come, I was able to use all the energy that I had left to reach my goal. A competition like this fills you with emotions that you hardly forget, it gives meaning to all the passion you put into what you do. In the days before the race we had the chance to see the course and I tried to study how to manage the race in the best way possible, making the most from the parts that best suited my characteristics. Several times I imagined the various situations that could have occurred in the race, convinced that I would be able to face them better because the mind and the approach to competition on certain occasions count more than the legs. The only regret was the fall a kilometer from the finish line when I was finally reaching the American Joseph Gray, but it is part of the game and this silver to me is like a gold medal!

91

92

You are part of the Italian National Team, a great satisfaction. What does it mean to you?

I share a lot with the other athletes of the Mountain Running Italian Team. I see them as models, examples to follow; special people capable of extraordinary challenges. Being on the National Team means above all running for a team, the Italian one, with a shirt that says "Italy", that makes us all brothers. When you are in the race all this multiplies your energy, the spirit of brotherhood that you experience can’t be found in any other environment. The meaning we give to ourselves is each time different, it depends on how we face the race and on the particular story we have behind.

The Mountain Running Italian Team is a group of fantastic people before being great athletes, training days with them away fly! The atmosphere that reigns in the team is simple and light, we work hard when training but there’s always time to have fun and we live every race with great serenity. I think it's one of the most beautiful environments I've ever lived and as athletes we try to carry on this spirit of sportsmanship and fairness in everyday life to transmit it even outside of our world.

How do you see yourself in the near future?

My idea would be to combine my lifestyle with an activity related to running, in order for one occupation to be a mutual support for the other. For example, writing, telling and inspiring other people, which I already partly do, or creating a pro team of athletes in the mountain and trail running sector, which would perhaps be the first in the world. Assumptions exist, interests are moving. I would like to leave a mark and make a concrete contribution to the world of mountain running, especially for those who will come after me. The reality is that I have a thousand ideas and thoughts in mind, maybe my need for freedom will bring me closer to the outdoors, but I wouldn't even mind going back to the world of physics, in the more distant future.

I hope to see our sport, mountain running, grow in terms of visibility and prestige. The dream is to see it in a few years at the Olympic Games, because it is the most beautiful sport in the world! On a personal level I am sure I still have room for improvement in sport and I would like to find the right compromise between sport and work in order to run a few years as a semi-pro or at least in a more relaxed way. I also want to continue my working experience within my company and grow in a job that could give me great satisfaction in the future.

The First Ascent Bhagirathi IV BY LUCA SCHIERA

95

With many more days available we decide to try the other route made of cracks on the right, the real problem is that it will take us exactly where the schist is higher and more problematic. We have no idea how that kind of rock will be and how we will overcome it.

The only thing to do is to try.

O

nce upon a time there was a king named Bhagiratha. The legend tells that, when he became prince of the Sagaras, went to meditate on the Himalayas for a thousand years to please Ganga, the goddess of the river Ganges, in order to obtain the liberation of his ancestors from the curse of Kapila. Ganga told him that if she had descended from the sky the force of her fall would have been devastating. She asked him to get Shiva's favor because he would be the only one able to support her. He accepted and brought the goddess to the earth in the form of the Ganges river, filling the sea. From the Goumuk glacier, the source of the river, rise the four imposing mountains that took their name from the king: the Bhagirathi I, II, III, and IV in descending order of height. This is the story of the smallest, the Bhagirathi IV. With its 6200 meters, it is the lowest mountain of the chain and our history with it starts four years ago, in 2015. It is winter and we are looking for an interesting spot for the following summer but we have no precise ideas. The name of Bhagirathi pops up, I think it's a bit saturated now and I don't expect much from it. But from the photos it looks very interesting: it has a beautiful shape, the granite glitters in the sun and it looks very steep. People have been tried to climb it for many years but with no success. We decide to go there after the monsoon. The first impact is traumatic, Delhi is hot and suffocating at night, the air is saturated with humidity and smog but only with the morning light we can understand how much it is crowded. Fortunately for us, we immediately jump into a van towards the mountains. The climate becomes much more bearable and the temperature drops until we reach the end of the road after two days of travel. We are in Gangotri, a 3000 m high village divided in two by the river Ganges, a place of pilgrimage for Hindus and western tourists. From here on we will proceed for two days on foot together with the base camp team. The season seems good, the monsoon is over, there is good weather even if it's still cold. We start climbing what appears to be the most logical route of the mountain, but as soon as the sun touches the wall, after the first pitches, some stones start to fall, we don’t know how to protect ourselves, it is only half a day but we decide to go down. With many more days available we decide to try the other route made of cracks on the right, the real problem is that it will take us exactly where the schist is higher and more problematic. We have no idea how that kind of rock will be and how we will overcome it. The only thing to do is to try.

The second week of September is very cold and in the morning we have to climb without gloves with various degrees below zero, soon our fingers become numb and after a few pitches it begins to snow. After the second refuge, we reach an altitude of 5900 m, around us just hardpack, everything is smooth. I go down and a few minutes later the sun comes out and the snow beneath my feet disappears. Let's go home. In the following seasons the thought of the Bhagirathi IV returns to my mind more and more frequently, until it becomes too insistent, we have to go back. We arrive at the base camp pretty early, the monsoon has not yet passed and even if it is August it’s snowing, we fear it will become even colder than four years ago. We take advantage of bad days to bring our gears and stuff under the wall and acclimatize. This time we're really ready. First days of September. The weather is perfect, the wall has seems excellent and it's hot, we go up to the advanced base camp at 5000 m high ready to hit the road the next day. As we rest, two large piles of stones come off and in a few seconds they completely invest our entire climbing route. Now what? Shall we go for it anyway? That same afternoon, we agree that attempting it would be too dangerous so we take a look at the other walls. Nothing convinces us, we go back to the base camp again without an alternative plan. Some days pass and the only solution that comes our mind is to try again the most obvious route in the middle wall, the one that had rejected us four years earlier, hoping that with time we have gained more experience and ability to climb it. We start, ready for five days on the wall, we know that we will spend at least two days advancing for a few meters, after which we hope to be able to continue faster towards the summit, we will decide how to go down only on the last day. It is very cold in the morning, after some time, with great surprise, we find an old belay of someone coming directly from below us, we go to see what we have over our heads but something is not right: why have they arrived here and then continued on if we are in the dihedral? The answer comes early, looking above us we see that the crack continues upwards with long breaks and then disappears completely after about two hundred meters where there’s a roof. It is an unexpected surprise, we were sure to have overcome the greatest difficulties, even if we could pass that it would take us many days that we do not have. The only solution seems to go down again.

] As we rest, two large piles of stones come off and in a few seconds they completely invest our entire climbing route. Now what? Shall we go for it anyway?

99

At the base camp we are again without an idea, with little hope but at least many days still available. We start to timidly think again about the right route even though we don't know how to deal with it. There haven’t been any falls of rocks lately but the idea of being in that place does not attract us that much, we let a little time go by to clear our minds or go home. But we don't want to leave things halfway. We arrived here for a specific reason, we decide to go for it but we should be much faster, the big advantage is that we already know the route. We wake up at midnight on September 15th from the advanced camp and begin to climb the base wall towards the beginning of the route, it is not cold and there is a full moon. We climb the first pitches in the dark, we know which cracks to follow and we gain altitude even though climbing is disturbed by the debris of the landslide from few weeks before. We proceed quickly and in the early afternoon we arrive at the crossroads where we took the wrong route last time. After some difficult movements we continue on the long dihedral where the quality of the rock begins to drop drastically anticipating the worst part, the black schist. It is night and we don’t know where to camp. The summit ridge is above us so we decide to continue and reach it. At 11 pm we are all standing on top, it's dark and unfortunately we can't see much around us, only the profiles of the highest mountains illuminated by the moon. On the west side there’s a 800 meter high rock wall while on the opposite side there seems to be only a small rock jump and then a long slope down to the valley, we go down that way and find a place to camp. The next day we walk towards the base camp, we pack our things and move under another mountain.

Two days later we are at the base of Shivling, perhaps the most beautiful mountain in the area, with a particular characteristic: it has two perfectly symmetrical peaks. The route we want to climb is the easiest of the mountain, the west ridge. It starts from at 5000 m with a white compact granite edge, with increasing difficulties and then suddenly stop against a huge 6000 m suspended serac. From there you can climb either one or the other peak without great difficulty. We are well acclimatized but we have only a few days left, we are afraid that the perfect weather that lasted throughout September will soon start to change. We climb the rock edge and reach the serac in the afternoon. We set our tent there to spend the night but the sounds of rocks falling down wake us up, we know we are safe but the darkness amplifies our fear. We set off again in the morning and climb the steep ice wall in just two hours. We are in this surreal place, with the two peaks on the right and left, 500 meters higher from us. We leave the gears and continue in line until the top, luckily the sky is clear and finally we have an overview of the mountains. We climb down the icy slope and luckily we are able to go down safely from the serac. The next day we are at base camp, now that we have completed our project we can finally go back home.

Once Upon A Time BY M A R TA M A N ZO N I POWERED BY LAFUMA

"Once upon a time there was the Mer de Glace glacier". The story that I will tell my children one day could begin in this way. “Instead of the service area you saw today, there was a shelter where I slept. Instead of the highway we passed, there was perennial snow".

n fact we are on the largest glacier in France to collect waste from the last century and it seems to live a premonitory dream: an introspective journey within ourselves awaits us, between meditation and worrying visions. In fact, the first discovery we make is the wheel of a car. Who knows how it ended up on Mer de Glace.

The organization is impeccable: four hours of scouring and sifting through every cold corner. We put the garbage in our bag and when it is full we empty it in another huge one where all the recovered objects are piled up, then are taken from the helicopter and brought to Chamonix, where we will separate waste.

This initiative is called Responsible Mountain, and is organized by Lafuma in collaboration with the French Alpine Club - CAF - which has been dealing with mountain cleaning for over thirty years. A day of concrete action, free and open to everyone, accompanied by UCPA guides, to safeguard the environment. "Since the first edition, 12 years ago, more than 28 tons of waste have been collected by thousands of participants" - emphasizes Renoud Menozzi, Lafuma brand manager. Due to the melting of the glacier because of climate change, more and more waste that was previously buried by the snow emerged.

We found everything: Italian liras, hundreds of cans, thousands of cigarette butts, 12 mussels, rusty iron pipes, a ski. But the plastic dominates the landscape: so much that soon form a small mountain.

plastic and the reduction of harmful subsidies for the environment, while Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said: "We will adopt courageous measures against climate change". The fight against plastics pollution has become the largest environmental movement in recent years. The next step is the transformation of an intention into actions that will have real effects.

The same scene occurs every day in our apartments: the plastic bin is always the first to fill up. We go on with our concentrated 'treasure hunt', in Zen silence. We are immersed in a lunar scenario. La Vallée Blanche is beautiful and breathtaking.

Individual choices, such as cycling, lowering heating in the home, intelligent shopping, are very relevant on a local scale but involve some sacrifices that few are willing to make when it comes to influence their lifestyle.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Mer de Glace was visible from Chamonix. Today to look at it you have to go up to Montenvers. Maybe my children will never see it. Yet there is still some hope. During the last few months there have been positive signs, both in Italy and in Europe: the new Government has introduced sustainability on the political agenda and discussions have been made about the proposals for measures that foresee new taxes on

Tangible behaviors, such as cleaning the beaches or the mountains, allow, literally touching with your own hands what can hurt nature, and make you learn to love it more. What is dawn if not a brushstroke on the canvas of the world? It is night that becomes day, it is the darkness painted with light. What dawn is not, is obviousness. It is a rare and complex simplicity, even though free, for those who want to spy on its arrival. I stand on the top of the mountains, where its taste is more delicate and deep. The dark air, full of fear and uncertainty, leaves room, like a caress, for the warmth of existence. Each dawn marks both the birth of a new day and the time, little by little. Every day is never the same, as time is composed of the same amount of seconds, but always different from each other. Time seems to be immobile but changeable. Someone may call it relativity of things; I prefer to refer to it as the subjectivity of the incomprehensible. If the photographer is a light hunter, what is the mountaineer if not a dawn hunter? Both of them go in search of that extended moment, of that deformation in which the rationality of the phenomenon is undermined by the wonder of the soul. The photographer captures it with his If the photographer own hands, the hunter with his eyes. It is irrational to fix it with the mind. In fact, I have never heard anyone exclaiming "What a is a light hunter, magnificent refraction and diffraction of photons in contact with what is the the atmosphere!. Instead it is inhuman to have never seen one. Dawn expands the eye with shapes and shades that are never the same. Its sound also changes overtime, the crunchy silence on the snow or the hiss of the wind in the grass, or even a deep and fast breath that goes off into infinity. It may taste like the blood of burning bronchi, or of the earth like a thirsty mouth. It can have the consistency of hot, rough rock or melting millennial ice. It sometimes smells of freedom, other times of death. Dawn is the sixth sense, an extrasensory perception. Sometimes it’s missing, and you can't do anything but feel the lack of it.

111

mountaineer if not a dawn hunter? Both of them go in search of that extended moment, of that deformation in which the rationality of the phenomenon is undermined by the wonder of the soul.

112

... I prefer dawns to sunsets for the same reason I prefer the beginning to the end. I was a little sixteen year old guy the first time I saw one. Special and classic at the same time. A perfect "V" valley with the sun rising in the middle, more or less like any child would paint. I doubted I would have seen many dawns in my life. To be honest I didn't even think that my life would rotate so much around the mountains. Mountains and photography have gloriously condemned my senses to that unparalleled marvel that can be rigorously perfected over time. Is there such a thing as the perfect dawn? Yes and no. I always wonder when it will be. I imagine the place and the shape. I think of the shades of the sky and the size of the clouds. I also think if there will be clouds or if it will be a clear sky. I imagine the sun, if it will go up shy or if it will be a fireball? I observe which will be the portion of the valley to take the first light and which will be its darker parts. I think about the animals in the forest, when it will be the first chirping and which will be the first larch to ignite.

The most beautiful dawn always comes, by surprise, always different. It is a mutual expectation, a meeting on the peaks of the world, because we know, the world from the top of the mountains is simply more beautiful. The perfect dawn exists whenever it occurs. The meaning of life belongs to that moment, when everything is blossoming and reborn. I'm alert, I'm alive. Sometimes I think I could die there right here, with a grin on my mouth. I am everything and nothing, I am center and edge, I am dark and light.

Cervino BY ALICE RUSSOLO - MARCO EYDALLIN M O U N TA I N G U I D E M A R C O E Y DA L L I N

"I’ve lived many adventures with Marco, but if someone asked me which one was the most exciting one, the answer would be easy and immediate: the climb of the Matterhorn. The truth is that the Matterhorn was not in our plans or a dream I had, or at least, not immediately."

116

Alice: I’ve lived many adventures with Marco, but if someone asked me which one was the most exciting one, the answer would be easy and immediate: the climb of the Matterhorn. The truth is that the Matterhorn was not in our plans or a dream I had, or at least, not immediately. I’ve always believed it was not my thing and therefore the thought was always: "sooner or later we will do it". Until a very quiet mid-September evening, I was having a nice beer in the company of some guys who would have follow my photography course the next day, when I got a message from Marco: "Next week, Monviso and Matterhorn. I'm excited". My only answer was: “Great!". Marco: I’m sure that the Matterhorn has a special energy. I reached the cross at its summit three times and each of them I got excited. And it's certainly not the only mountain I've climbed! I would like to climb it with Alice next time. It's a nice hike, but it's worth it. This weekend I was supposed to climb the eastern crest of Monviso with two different groups. Both of them had health issues and therefore everything has been postponed. It’s the 13th of September and there is not much time left to face these climbs without meeting some snow. I look at the weather forecast for the following week, it should be nice. I think about it for a moment. Then text Alice: "Next week Monviso and Matterhorn. I'm excited ". She immediately replies: “Great!"

Going to the mountains in midSeptember has pros and cons. The pros are that there is no one around, and the cons are a direct consequence of the pros: closed facilities and jeepshuttle service not available. A: My prediction of "sooner or later we will do it" came true sooner than expected. We decide to do the Monviso first, in preparation for the long climb up the Matterhorn. During the days preceding each of our adventures, I usually search the web to try to understand what we will see, what kind of climb and difficulty will await us, thinking that this can prepare me better, at least mentally. It's always a double-edged sword: you don't know if the ones who write climbing reviews are strong athletes, and the photos, I should know it better than anyone else, can easily distort your perception of steepness, difficulty and more or less wild environment. I didn't do any of that this time, no research. I don't know what triggered the Matterhorn in me, but wanting to climb it and reaching the top was the only thing I wanted, and that was enough for me. M: Going to the mountains in mid-September has pros and cons. The pros are that there is no one around, and the cons are a direct consequence of the pros: closed facilities and jeep-shuttle service not available. I told Alice that the Matterhorn, faced on the Italian side, the Lion Crest, is a not extreme climb but it requires a good training. What contributes to increase the difficult of the climb is its length. 800m to the Oriondé refuge, easy to reach with a jeep, 1000m up to the bivouac where you spend the night, the Carrel hut, at 3835m. The following day there are 600m more to reach the summit at an altitude of 4478m, then you have to add 600m of descent, as delicate as the ascent if not more, to be faced along the same route, and other 1800m to the parking lot, in Cervina. Let's say that we would have loved to avoid those last 800m of altitude thanks to a jeep. A: I'm excited Thrilled. We start on foot from Cervinia, just to make it even shorter. But we both like to complicate things, we are smiling, and are also fully loaded because at Carrel, in addition to a mattress and (fortunately) some blankets, there is nothing. You need to bring everything you need. Water, food, clothes, extra layer and, if in doubt, 10 painkillers in case of high altitude sickness. The weather has changed and we decided to take advantage of these days with the best conditions to climb the Matterhorn. We will think about Monviso later. Going up towards Carrel we meet various groups, one of these with two Venetian guys. They stop, we exchange some words, they are excited about their climb. One of them greets us saying "How great is to climb the Matterhorn with your girlfriend". I look at Marco and smile both with my lips and eyes. I know I have to thank him for making me live these adventures, especially together. He says to me: "See, this is the effect of the Matterhorn, you are so happy when climbing that you want to share it with other people". Before Carrel we hit the famous “canaponi". Certainly it is not an easy walk, we are now facing a

slightly more difficult route and the altitude makes us feel all the heaviness of our backpacks. At the bivouac there’s some wind and the clouds run fast. They hide and then suddenly discover what turns out to be an amazing sight. The Monte Rosa massif to the east with its snowy sharp ridges. Cervinia in front of us suffers the coming and going of the clouds that create plays of light and shadows on the ski slopes, still grassy. Some of them have summer colors, others, higher up, are already feeling the arrival of autumn, with their saturated reds of the sunset light. M: Every time I think about how lucky we are to experience such things, to see these places so closely. The sunset from here looks more beautiful. The wind is very strong but this doesn't stop me from taking some pictures and doing a time lapse. We are 8 rope teams. I exchange opinions with the other guides about the time to leave to not overlap each others. The route is mandatory. It’s 5am. No breakfast, we immediately start with "the wake up rope”. The name says a lot. The whole first part is done completely in the dark, the only light is that of our headlamps and of an almost full moon. We proceed quickly up to the big rope where, at the top, the trail continues turning onto the west slope. It’s very cold here because of the strong wind. I see Alice wearing her last layer and putting the gloves on. I reach here and feel her breathing fast, despite this she does not slow her pace. I know that as soon as we reach the Pic Tyndall the wind will return to being more than bearable thanks to the fact that the route returns on the southern slope. A: It’s 5am. I didn't sleep much due to the altitude and I had breakfast with two painkillers. I can’t see anything. Perfect, I say to myself, so I don't even have to think about the void at my feet. And then I have to concentrate on climbing the famous "wake up rope”. If I ever thought about sleepwalking a bit, like on those alpine trails where you begin to walk in the dark along the glacier, slowly, until you realize that it's time to really wake up, well I was wrong. Marco told me that until the Pic Tyndal time flies, then, from there you see the top that looks beautiful, but it is still a few hours away. He was right, the 2 and a half hours spent up to there have flown, but the cold was insane. The wind started to blow in an overbearing way. A bit like my headache. Will it also stop once arrived at the Pic Tyndall? M: As I see Alice approaching the sun rises. I would say that I have seen such a beautiful sunrise just a few times, even though I realize that I say that every time. Maybe it’s the charm of the mountain, maybe it’s the environment, or maybe it’s just about knowing how to appreciate experiences, not things. I urge Alice to take her camera out, I know it will be a pain to take off her gloves with icy hands but then again, as she always repeats to me whenever she wants me to stop to let her take pictures, "every left is lost ".

121

122

And we won’t be back here any time soon. The shadow of the Matterhorn is huge. Down there you can also see the Mont Blanc, with its rose-colored top. We have arrived at the point where the route returns to the southern slope, we rest a few minutes before calmly going on for the last part of the climb. The top is visible, it seems there, but in fact, it is still far away. A: Dawns warm your heart, and even your hands. I hope my little camera will be able to reproduce with justice the dawn we have just been spectators of. Incredible how to focus on one thing makes another lose importance. Photo vs. wind and cold. Photos won. M: We proceed fairly quickly despite the fact that I continue filming. There are optimal conditions, the rock is clean and there is no trace of ice and snow. Behind us, a painting. Alice smiles. I'm happy. We're almost on the Giordan scale. A: We’re almost there. We meet the first three teams arrived at the summit while they are already going down. Two guides from Cervinia and another guide, friend of Marco. The latter greets us and going past me, says “Good job, you’re almost there". The top is really close. I'm starting to get excited. I see the famous Giordan scale. Meanwhile the sky is slightly veiled but to me everything looks beautiful. I begin to think that up until now I have enjoyed myself so much that I have already forgotten the cold felt in my hands (what cold?) and that a dream that I did not know I wanted to come true is about to come true. I think I'm lucky and I don't want to take anything for granted. I look at Marco getting out of the rocks and standing out in the sky. It is 9.30am and we are on the short final ridge, we are breathless again but this time because I’m about to cry. A mix of emotion, satisfaction, gratitude, happiness and above all sharing are translated into tears. Even these shared. We are on the top of the Matterhorn. M: Selfie on top. Russolo-Eydallin rope team (+ tears) on the top of the Matterhorn. Our adventure then definitively finished at the Cervinia parking lot 13 hours after leaving the Carrel that morning. Ah, and we have never arrived to the Monviso.

LAST WORD BY

D AV I D E F I O R A S O We only practice a watered down version of nomadism. Our references are based on certainties and permanence. In itinerant cultures, on the other hand, time constantly emphasizes the daily precariousness: every place is one simple stage of the journey, every journey is the primary condition of existence, the reason for one's identity. "Where am I?" The tourist asks. "Who am I?" The traveler wonders. The meaning of the journey coincides with the object of a research. A defined space or something immaterial: elsewhere. Elsewhere is what walking gives us, the ability to escape in time and space. The possibility of looking for a reality different from the everyday. Elsewhere is not just a place, but the same place in other times. It is the projection of our relationship with the world, a relationship that we think we can rewrite each time.
