Edito Stories are important. They’re everything. Our existence is based precisely on this: tell them and hear them tell. Think about it. Even in our daily life, when we come back from work, from a trip or when we simply meet someone, the first things asked are: "How did it go? What did you do today? What's new? Nothing to tell?". In other words, this is the way in which we exchange stories, fables, tales and new scripts to enrich the script of our own life. Sad or funny stories. Real or made up stories. It doesn't matter, we all need those stories. To tell them and to hear them tell. The narration has always been the fundamental vehicle for the transmission of knowledge and memory of the various cultures that have followed one another over the years.
One of the most important progress in the study of personality (from Freud and Adler to Allport and McAdams) has been to understand that what we are also depends on what we tell ourselves that we are. Our development and our individual growth crucially depend on this continuous interplay between reality and the way we represent that same reality. This construction process responds to one of the fundamental needs of the human being: a profound understanding of our “self-concept" and its place in the world. We are who we are, but also who we say we are. Making sense of our lives essentially means telling our story, a small piece of the society we live in. Giving meaning means discovering the plot of our life, its main protagonists and supporting actors, the background, the turning points, the twists.
2
What stories are we telling each other, then? What script is proposed by today’s manager? And it's not just about distinguishing true from false or making us less vulnerable to manipulation. It is a question of understanding whether or not the framework in which we move has all the tools necessary to allow us to give meaning, individually and collectively, to the experience of our lives. Sense and happiness, meaning and usefulness follow very often, much more frequently than we are willing to admit, different trajectories. The true happiness of the dissatisfied Socrates or the illusion of the satisfied idiot. In which direction are we moving? In which direction, individually and collectively, do we want to go?

Oxyburn: technical base layer, an ally even in summer Wearing a first layer in contact with the skin is essential in every season, not just in the cold ones. Base layers are designed for all different types of climate and temperatures to contribute to natural thermoregulation. For this reason, in anticipation of the summer, Oxyburn presents two special solutions, specific for the male and female world. Dressing in layers helps keep the body dry by allowing the skin to breathe. It also prevents any upper layers from absorbing sweat and remaining damp during sports activities. The lightweight of the fabric plays an essential role in technical layers in order to reduce perspiration and help you to stay cool. The material used must ensure good moisture evacuation even on the hottest days. Finally, the fit must be comfortable and become almost one with the body.
Kim tank top, Keep Fit leggings, Hiking sock The Kim tank top and the Keep Fit leggings stimulate women to take care of their well-being by practicing outdoor sports. They feature a pleasant softness of the fabrics that follows the shape of the body, enhancing it. The special weaving textures also maintain the necessary durability over time, even after daily use, and contribute to the correct dispersion of excess heat during each action, avoiding the formation of bad odors and guaranteeing antibacterial properties. The shock-absorbing structure with different densities of the new Hiking sock ensures a perfect fit and total foot protection. The contact layer in Dryarn finally accelerates perspiration.
Cross t-shirt, Axo shorts, 2Way sock With a weight of only 85g, this ultra-lightweight fabric t-shirt is able to maintain the correct body microclimate. The self-
24
ventilating micro-mesh structure leaves the body isolated even in the most intense activities, together with the effective bacteriostatic and hypoallergenic effect of the inner Dryarn layer. The absence of seams and the raw cut finishes guarantee extreme comfort. The Axo shorts, on the other hand, are designed to stimulate circulation by improving muscle oxygenation. They act on the venous flow and reduce muscle vibrations, allowing energy savings, less fatigue and an increase in physical endurance under stress. Made of Dryarn, they have high transpiration and thermal insulation capacity. The particular raw-cut stabilizing band in high-tech Micro Fresh fabric has a soft texture, which avoids heat concentrations and allows them to dry faster. In the 2Way sock the special mix of merino wool, coming from 100% mulesing free farms, and eucalyptus viscose offers thermoregulation combined with pleasant freshness. The self-sanitizing and cushioned footbed facilitates the dissipation of sweat for absolute comfort.

Aku & Karpos support Ice Memory What if we tell you that a natural archive of information can be contained within ice and that glaciers are full of data that can help us date climatic and environmental facts and variations with precision even after hundreds of years? Earth has many natural archives capable of storing information, such as ocean sediments, tree growth rings and even glaciers. To collect these data from the depths, we use ice cores, which, thanks to the layers of snow accumulated over time, are able to maintain numerous indications on various atmospheric parameters in an almost an unchanged state for hundreds of years. But if glaciers will completely melt, what would happen? Precisely for this reason the Ice Memory project was born, supported by Aku, to save what is the memory written in them, before the strong rise in temperatures melts or destroys everything that could be analyzed. Following the removal of the ice cores, the latter will be transported to one of the safest freezers in the world: Antarctica, which thanks to its temperature of -52° favors the maintenance of these archives. Carlo Barbante, Director of the Institute of Polar Sciences of the CNR and
professor at Ca’ Foscari University, explained to us the aim of this project and why it is so important in the climatic situation we are experiencing now. What do we need this data contained in the ice for? When snow falls, it settles, trapping with it all the atmospheric dust, but also a whole series of contaminating species in the air and also in the water of which it is composed. From this we can draw a lot of information on what the temperatures were even thousands of years ago. Why is it so important? We want to know how the climate system works. To understand what happens today and to put what will happen
26
tomorrow into perspective, we need to understand how everything works naturally. Going back in time we can understand how it worked and by doing so we can, with more awareness, take decisions for our future. In Antarctica, these archives will maintain for almost hundreds of years, why do we need to keep them so much? Current analytical technologies can analyze many of the data present in these portions of ice, in 50 or maybe 100 years, after the disappearance of the ice, future generations of scientists will have much more performing tools than the current ones and thanks to Ice Memory there will be however, availability of samples to be analyzed.

Climb & Clean Two friends, a common passion for climbing and the desire to experience mountains, leaving as little sign as possible of their passages. This could sum up the adventure of "Climb & Clean", an ambitious environmental awareness project carried out by Matteo Della Bordella and Massimo Faletti.
"For years I have been committed to raising awareness on the issue of keeping the mountains clean." comments Massimo Faletti, creator of the project. "It takes little time to throw your trash away properly, I just can't understand what drives a person to abandon it in nature." The goal is simple: try to leave a healthy environment for the next generations. The same ambition is also shared by Della Bordella who tries to bring that light and clean style that he uses on the great walls of the world into everyday life.
From north to south
Climb & Clean’s numbers
For the zero edition of the initiative, the two climbers have decided to ideally connect Italy from north to south by carrying out a cleaning campaign that first involved the crag of Forti di Civezzano, near Trento, and then those of Buccheri and San Vito Lo Capo, in Sicily. “We found lots of different things” Della Bordella recalls. "Appliances, old car scrap, milk, even bags full of leaves!" All the material collected, thanks to the help of volunteers and friends, was sorted and thrown away according to the rules. In San Vito Lo Capo, by the sea, much of the garbage collected reaches the coast because of the waves. “In addition to plastic, tires and various containers, we also found a lot of clothes and shoes. They are the ones that arrive from the boats of migrants that sink into the sea.”
During the ten days of the project, were collected more than 10,000 kilos of waste: household appliances and metal (42.75%), plastic (19.75%), tires (13.5%), undifferentiated (13.25%) and glass (7.75%). To this large amount of garbage collected must be added the lower impact on the environment due to the means of transport used. To move from Trentino to Sicily Faletti and Della Bordella in fact used the high-speed train, while they chose an electric car to move inland. It is a way to share a further message, demonstrating how everyone, even in their own small way, can help minimize the impact of their activities on the territory.

Alto & Telos by Sea to Summit Sea to Summit presents Alto and Telos, two camping tents that will guarantee you to live an incredible adventure in the middle of nature by changing every aspect of the camping experience. In fact, most of the lightweight tents present on the market have cross bars at the top of the tent that slope downwards. The Tension Ridge architecture of the Alto and Telos models instead allows for more usable space, higher doors and higher ventilation and airflow thanks to the cantilevers of the bar that raise the height of the tent increasing its volume. In addition the Apex Vent positioned on top of the tent, efficiently expels hot air and humidity, preventing the accumulation of condensation. Unlike most vent models, Apex Vent does not require a mesh panel to maintain tension across the opening, allowing for up to 70% better airflow. In combination with the Baseline vents and oversized doors, it helps achieve climate control and optimal airflow and can be adjusted (or closed) from inside the tent. These tents also feature vents at the base that control airflow to manage humidity and condensation in wet conditions which help achieve climate control and high airflow.
Wide doors allow for comfortable access and sweeping exterior views for a more liveable interior, while the two large vestibules offer plenty of space to store equipment and protect it from the elements. The tent pole bag doubles as a ceiling light diffuser when used in conjunction with the headlamp. Finally, the quick-connect tent feet are easy to use and allow for one-handed setting up and adjustments.

Sustainable actions: Instructions for use
38
THE ECO PILL BY S O F I A PAS OT TO
When we reduce consumption, turn off the tap while brushing our teeth, buy bulk products and use water bottles, we feel like kings and queens of sustainability, deluding ourselves that our actions will save the world. First, it is not the world that needs to be saved, but us. Secondly, the myth that has been built around the figure of the responsible and ethical consumer finds its basis in the will of the most polluting companies in the world to shift the responsibility for the climate crisis onto individual citizens. Indeed, individual actions are often viewed as the exclusive and most effective way to fight climate change when in reality, spoiler, this is not the case at all. We frequently feel helpless when seeing reports of forest fires ravaging and dying out species and we rightly wonder what we can do to solve this problem. While there are people who are looking for ways to include sustainability in their daily lives, feeling guilty and ashamed of every “mistake" they make, there are others that think the climate crisis is an issue so abstract and distant that it is not even conceivable to take measures to fight it. Let’s be clear, when it comes to individual actions there is no "right" and "wrong", but it is a question of giving them the correct weight in the hierarchical scale of climate action. The climate crisis does not exist because we drink from plastic cups, nor because we don't recycle our waste. The climate crisis exists because one hundred companies in the world produce more than 70% of greenhouse gas emissions that we cannot compensate even with the most virtuous individual actions. And here is where another type of action comes into play, the collective one: it is necessary to unite as a community to put poli-
tical pressure on governments and ensure that they implement policies that have a real impact. This means that we can continue to avoid single-use plastics, but to solve the problem to the roots the state needs to completely ban it. Similarly, we can use the bike and electric vehicles, but it is not individuals who can make the energy transition and electrify the public transport network. Certainly, to ensure that any type of action at the state level is positively received, it is essential that citizens are increasingly aware of the impact that everyone's choices have, of sustainable alternatives and of the general climate situation, but collective action it is an essential requirement for state action to take place. Collective commitment can take the form of active participation in events, of sharing of information material, of divulgation, activism and much more. For example, in recent times citizens of different nationalities have brought states and companies to court, accusing them of placing the burden of resolving the climate crisis on the shoulders of individuals: polluters must be responsible for their own devastating actions on the whole ecosystem. But there are individual actions that have a direct impact on the community or on the fossil fuel system, and to be sustainable in our daily life it is vital to start with these. Tote bags, LED bulbs, plant-based diet, food recovery and all other individual activities that are part of the world of daily sustainability will naturally come afterwards. First of all, it is essential to learn about the climate crisis. Understanding what are its causes and consequences, not only on an environmental level, but also on an economic and social level. Read articles, listen to
39
podcasts, consult the most reliable newsletters on climate and environment, follow accounts that appear in our feed every day to update us and keep us informed. All of this is of primary importance and cannot be overshadowed. Then, it is necessary to be sure that our bank do not support fossil fuel companies by financing projects, explorations, conferences, because there is a good chance that our investments will go right there. In Italy, two banks out of all finance the climate crisis every year with subsidies to the fossil world, and our commitment is not to be complicit in this destruction. Finally, let's be active. Let’s talk about the climate issue in the subway, at the table among the uneasy looks of our relatives, in the company we work for, let’s take part in actions promoted by environmental movements or associations, let’s share on social networks and create a space for growth and without judgment for all those people we relate with. Individual actions are as fundamental as collective ones and if we only do one or the other, half of our effort gets wasted. This does not mean that it is necessary to be perfect, but it means taking the first step on a path that is certainly not easy, but it is vital.

Michelin x Garmont Dragontail Tech GTX From the union of Garmont and Michelin comes Dragontail Tech GTX, a shoe dedicated to all approach enthusiasts who love to challenge themselves on all types of mountain trails, even the most difficult ones.
Technical, precise and lightweight, it is designed for the user who looks for the utmost in technology with high performance. The suede upper is equipped with the Gore-Tex Extended Comfort technology which is capable of adapting to any climate. The Ortholite UltraLite footbed is characterized by a combined structure: a rigid and stable compound in the heel area and a soft ultralite compound in the central and forefoot area. Compared to the previous model, the Michelin sole, specially designed for Garmont’s new born, gives the shoe maximum flexibility and lightness. It is equipped with a specific double compound for approaching in the tip and with sipings designed to ensure greater adaptability and grip on all terrains, even if its technicality is enhanced on gravel, exposed rocks and mixed routes. The tread design has been developed to offer maximum flexibility and traction, guaranteeing
the wearer 360 degree freedom of movement on all types of terrain. To make the sole extremely light it has been designed with fiber lite technology, while, to offer maximum stability to the wearer, triangular sculptures have been inserted in the heel that are capable of improving braking and making walking stable even downhill. This makes it a versatile, lightweight shoe, but at the same time able to offer a high level of comfort for long treks, walking on ridges, exposed rocks, mixed routes and technical approach. We had a chat with Maurizio Marogna who tested the shoe for Michelin.
40
Maurizio can you tell us who you are and what you do? My name is Maurizio Marogna, I have a degree in Physical Education and I am a ski instructor, trainer of the Italian E-bike School and modern nordic walking trainer. I have been climbing for several years, both on crags and on mountaineering routes, I am also a journalist and consultant of Federalberghi Garda-Veneto for outdoor activities. In short, I would say that I don’t get bored so easily! You’ve recently tested Garmont’s new model Dragontail Tech GTX, how did you carry out the tests for your evaluations? The tests
THE PILL PRODUCTS MAURIZIO MAROGNA ITW
were carried out on various terrains and on climbing routes up to the 3° grade with some passes up to the 4°. What are your final thoughts about the shoe and its connection with the sole? I found the shoe overall excellent, with a good transmission of the feeling with the ground to the foot and a multidirectional grip that allows a good traction both uphill and downhill. The model, even on steep slopes, offers a feeling of reliability, grip and precision. What features should an approach shoe have? More and more times ap-
proaches to walls are treacherous and not always easy. The shoe must have excellent grip especially on wet and often stony terrain. What role does the sole play in the performance of a shoe? The role of the sole is fundamental. Just think about having a shoe that does not make you feel safe when you put your foot down: it is a very bad feeling, especially on particularly demanding terrain and trails. For example, in the Michelin sole found on Garmont's Dragontail Tech GTX, the design and arrangement of the lugs guarantee adaptability and grip on all types of
41
terrain. Without forgetting lightweight and traction. What features should a sole have according to the different mountain activities? In general, a sole must guarantee reliability, in particular on stony ground it must offer you a secure grip, while on wet, especially on steep traverses, it must make you feel comfortable. To what kind of enthusiast would you recommend this shoe? I would recommend it to everyone looking for a safe and comfortable shoe. It is a model that will ensure you great performances.

La Sportiva Aequilibrium Series
Equilibrium is the state that makes possible to control the position and movement of the body in a space. And a harmonious synthesis between opposing forces is precisely the declaration of intent of the new line by La Sportiva. In fact, the Aequilibrium Series aims to combine comfort, technicality, lightweight and durability, important features for modern mountaineering that has light & fast as its focus. The Aequilibrium line consists of 3 products with different degrees of technicality and suitable for use on alpine terrain, for fast and light day trips, technical crossings on stony ground and mixed terrain. The common heart is the construction of the Double Heel heel that allows extreme walkability. The particular geometry with a very pronounced double-wedge rear increases the braking effect downhill and allows for a smoother walk, reducing muscle fatigue. All three versions have an internal lining with waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex Performance Comfort membrane. The 3D Flex System Evo technology allows for better control of the support and perfect mobility of the ankle. Finally, the innovative Vibram SpringLug Tech sole is composed of a rubber shell, which ensures protection and abrasion resistance, while inside there’s a low-density polyurethane that maximizes the comfort properties, also giving the sole a great adaptability to rough terrain. We reached out to Fabian Buhl, developer of the three mo-
dels together with La Sportiva’s R&D department, to find out more about this innovative series. Hi Fabian, who are you and what do you do? I am Fabian Buhl, I’m from Germany but I’m currently living in the southern part of the French Alps. I like to practice all mountain sports and try to be as versatile as possible. Yet my main focus lies in mountaineering, multipitch climbing and paragliding. Right now I’m focusing especially on the mix between paragliding and mountaineering, because I believe there is huge potential. You work closely with La Sportiva's R&D department, what is your role exactly? Since two years I am working closely with the R&D team of La Sportiva in order to develop next level alpine boots, made for the fastest and most technical approaches. Together with the R&D team, we try to realize a boot that fits the needs of the normal customer. We really would like to make boots that are strong and long lasting, yet lightweight and comfortable. That’s why we need to test a lot of new materials and ideas. When I get the prototypes I try to wear them as much as I can to understand what works and what doesn’t. This process goes on until we have a boot which we think is
42
good. If we are not satisfied, we try until we are. What features should have a technical high mountain boot? It depends very much from the temperatures you will encounter. But generally we want a warm, flexible, and comfortable boot to wear and which is as lightweight as possible, without jeopardizing the quality and durability. For what kind of outdoor enthusiast and for what kind of activity would you recommend each of the boots? I recommend them for all summer mountaineering, via ferrata and even hiking and if you want to have a solid boot or one able to cross glaciers or névé. Then everybody can decide by themselves if they wants a gaiter or rather a lighter boot. Aequilibrium also presents the new Vibram SpringLug Tech sole, what role does the sole play in this kind of boots? The main reason why we used it is its shock absorbing feature and also because it kind of levels out the ground. Not much but enough to be way more comfortable than an original rubber sole. The positive side effect is that it is lighter because of the lightweight polyurethane and it is a bad heat inductor, so the boot stays warmer.

Kayland Dragon Project Dry-tooling is a form of rock climbing in which ice axes are used to climb rock that is not covered in snow or ice. It has its origins in mixed climbing, ice climbing and more recently sport climbing. This discipline, born in the early 90s, therefore allows climbers to continue their climbs regardless of the conditions of walls, even when the ice breaks to make room for the rock or vice versa. This particular feature makes this sport activity interesting for both enthusiasts and professionals looking for new adventures, and it has in fact experienced a real boom in recent years. Recently, dry tooling has attracted an increasing number of people and to meet the needs of professional dry toolers and new enthusiasts, in the winter of 2019/2020, Kayland started the Dragon Project, with the aim of creating the first footwear on the market dedicated specifically to dry tooling and mixed climbing. The project comes from Kayland's desire to deeply innovate the mixed climbing sector, creating models that perfectly respond to this niche of courageous users, to help them reach new levels of difficulty that were previously unthinkable. For this project, Kayland
collaborated with Matteo Rivadossi, a tireless Brescian of international fame, a specialist in mountaineering, ice and mixed climbing and canyoning, and Marco Verzelletti, also a professional mountaineer, climber and dry tooler. Combining technical knowledge, innovation, know-how and skills, the combined work of Kayland, Matteo and Marco gave life to the Dry Dragon and Ice Dragon models, in partnership
44
with leading brands in the sector such as Vibram, Cassin, Wintherm and PrimaLoft. Dry Dragon and Ice Dragon combine extreme lightweight, precision on mixed climbing passages and great adaptability to difficulty degrees of vertical walls. Both shoes are designed to help mountain enthusiasts and professionals to overcome any obstacle in an increasingly easier and safer way.

Dry Dragon This shoe, specifically dedicated to dry toolers and their needs, has a carbon sole with a direct attachment to the crampon that allows instant force transmission, together with great sensitivity and precision. The thickened fixing screws are inserted directly into the rigid sole which offers a hint of flex essential for a performing and comfortable fit. The Heel Retention System ensures that the heel always remains in place, thanks to the joint action of the Smart Lace lacing system and the internal padding. Dry Dragon boasts a sole designed exclusively in collaboration with Vibram, called Vibram Tool, with a tread divided into two parts to guarantee foot protection without compromising lightweight. The rub-
Ice Dragon ber is drilled in correspondence with the fixing screws. The heel area is specifically designed for heel hooking and offers high grip. Dry Dragon has a PU polyurethane protection system that protects the foot from impact and the upper from wear. The PU inserts are positioned both on the toe and in the back. The Vibram tread with Idrogrip compound is inspired by climbing shoes and guarantees grip even on slippery ground. Finally, the crampons included are made of nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel and the tip is adjustable and interchangeable with the Cassin Blade Runner.
45
It shares the same look and many of the technical features of the Dry Dragon model but with significant differences that make it the ideal shoe for extreme mixed, winter and ice climbing. The sole unit remains unchanged and it is the same as the Dry Dragon, but the Bolt On crampon guarantees an even better grip in both the toe and heel. Ice Dragon also provides a protection system and PU inserts, integrating a gaiter with velcro closure, while the overlap construction allows two different adjustments of the ankle closure. The PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco insole offers high thermal insulation and it is specifically designed to support repeated compressions and ensure maximum durability.

Hoka & WildTee Support The Green & Gray Ring Project Several scientific studies today are moving towards the direction of demonstrating how aerobic exercise has a significant impact not only on the muscle structure, but also on the cognitive capacity of individuals who practice it regularly. Sports activities carried out outdoor improve mood, increase self-esteem, reduce anxiety and depression. Furthermore, contact with nature helps to recover concentration and has positive effects on emotions, reducing anxiety and negative feelings.
We have been invited by Hoka One One and WildTee in Milan in the Runaway store to see with our own eyes the work combined with Strobilo, who gave life to The Green & Gray Ring Project, a neuroscientific research that links outdoor activities to urban planning policies for determine in a scientific way what benefits derive from practicing sports in the middle of nature and in green areas compared to do the same in highly urbanized areas. We had a chat with Andrea Bariselli, Strobilo’s CEO & Chief Scientist, to find out more about this interesting project. What is Strobilo and what does it do? Strobilo is a Health & Climate-Tech company that uses the most
advanced neuroscience techniques in combination with AI to study the relationship between humans and planet earth. Using a multi-layered analysis approach, we can collect, study and predict an unprecedented amount of data. Can you tell us about your know out? Data acquisition will be performed on a significantly large sample of individuals wearin EEG (ElectroEncephaloGram) while performing experiences in nature and other natural environments. Our central goal is to obtain the brain wave data that are produced during such experiences.
46
The ability to build in-depth analysis of how our brains react to nature and, more importantly, to build large datasets is essential for identifying trends that can emerge as a result of individuals spending time in nature. The data will be aggregated and converted into "readable" terms thanks to metrics and algorithms. These act as a tool that can explain, certify and provide a simplified understanding of the intrinsic value of a person's experience. We can then correlate these subconscious experiences with the variables present in the natural environment and draw correlations.
THE PILL PROJECT ANDREA BARISELLI ITW
47
THE PILL PROJECT BY DENIS PICCOLO
What does the project would like to demonstrate? Scientific literature undoubtedly confirms that running improves cognition and promotes neurogenesis (the birth of new cells), but Strobilo intends to go further and demonstrate how the brain's reactions profoundly change depending on the context. Moving from an overstimulating urban environment to nature's relatively simple forms can instantly reduce stress, relieve depression, and help improve focus and memory. Do you believe that after a year and a half of pandemic we need more contact with nature? Absolutely, it has been a kind of natural consequence for many people who have poured into the beautiful natural areas of our country, but sometimes it has been done in a "wrong" way. It has been highlighted that most of us lack a real naturalistic sensitivity (or intelligence). There is a great deal of work to be done, especially on new generations to help them understand and become familiar with a language that evolutionarily belongs to us, but which we are forgetting. What do the first data you collected and processed show? The first data show a pattern that we had already guessed in some previous works. Every simple sport activity (even if done for a short time) helps to clean the cognitive field and to be much more focused and concentrated. It seems paradoxical: I go out to run and make a physical effort and instead of coming back home tired, exhausted, my brain is fresher and more responsive. We have also highlighted this in endurance sports, it is a skill that seems to grow with the time spent on the move. The underlying hypothesis is that the effect of the natural
scenario can increase this value tenfold and add other benefits. What is the final aim of this research? The final aim is to sensitize the local administration on the issue of sporting practice and on the contact with nature as a free and accessible "therapeutic" form, urging more investments and green transition policies of urban public spaces to allow for a better quality of life to its citizens.

Plastic Free Ride Life with no plastic is fantastic
Volunteering actions are the ultimate ways to experiencing democracy: you vote every day based on the type of community you want to live in. Raffaele and Sara know this very well because their story is of someone who tries to change things. Cyclists who love to travel free, as only the bike makes them feel. Their initiative, Plastic Free Ride, is a simple yet powerful project, capable of combining sport, passion, ethics and ecology. A project based on a famous quote from British explorer and environmentalist Robert Swan: "The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it." The responsibility for plastic pollution is collective and the fight to save the planet must involve each one of us. “The incredible thing is that too often we are not aware of the problem. We believe that the consequences of this pollution, as well as global warming, are something that will not affect us directly. In reality the problem is already here, it concerns all of us and the people we love. If we wait, if we do nothing, it will be too late.” Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues. The effects are capable of causing irreversible damage to the life of ecosystems, with consequences for wildlife and human health. Every week we eat about 5 grams of plastic, the equivalent, by weight, of a credit card. In the form of microplastics, there are more
than 5 trillion litter scattered across our oceans. It is as if every minute a garbage truck is being emptied into the sea. “Those who love cycling know it. Even on roads that offer breathtaking views, if you look down, you will find abandoned waste. Plastic Free Ride was born from a dream and is growing more and more every day. In the summer of 2019, took place the first bike trip from Torbole to Rimini: 400km collecting waste abandoned along the road. This first experience gave us confirmation of how serious the problem is. In the summer of 2020 we left for the second trip, from Torbole to Lucca. The goal this year,

however, is to cross all Italy from the Lessini Mountains to Santa Maria di Leuca. About 1000km to give our contribution and involve more and more people in this mission." Raffaele and Sara travel on their bikes, talking to people with concrete gestures and doing their part in defense of natural environments. With a bike trolley and armed with telescopic pliers, they collect as much waste as possible, mainly plastic, but also cans, glass, unsorted waste that is sorted into the collection bins. In fact, while this pandemic has reduced CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions, it has created an expo-

nential development of single-use plastics. Italy is the country that holds the sad record (first in Europe and second in the world) for the consumption of bottled water. To this must be added the personal protective equipment. Worldwide, 130 billion masks and 65 billion gloves are produced every month. “Everyone of us has their own scale of priorities. Some place economic well-being at the top, others look mostly for fun and so on. And the environment? The planet? They are our home just like the walls we live in. Quoting an ancient proverb: the land is not ours, we did not inherit it from our parents. We have borrowed it from our children.”
Then there is change, the one to which we must all contribute but in which the strong powers play a fundamental role. The will to change must start from each one of us, but the support of public bodies and private companies is needed. On the other hand, people and the community should give up the habit and convenience of the moment, get out of the usual patterns and think less selfishly. The real problem today is that the relationship between plastic and men is a great failure. "We always like to emphasize that the problem is not the plastic itself, but the use we made of it.”
53
We must reduce its mass use by replacing it with alternative methods, change our purchasing paradigms, become active promoters of this important battle. But there’s more. Stories like this one, the one of Raffaele and Sara, are also important to inspire trust, instill awareness, stimulate action towards a change. See the beautiful part of reality and start rebuilding from that. If we want everything to remain as it is, everything must change.
THE PILL PROJECT THOMAS LORENZI ITW
Saucony Shadow Rep Italia A real team made up of passionate runners and Saucony’s experts and enthusiasts. They are the 12 members of the Shadow Rep project who travel all over Italy to offer advice, support and collect feedback to be reported to the company in order to increasingly improve the relationship between brand, retailers and public. An all-Italian project created in order to offer a punctual service of monitoring the territory thanks to people ready to intervene and respond to the needs of the market. An extra piece that Saucony Italia wanted to add to be more closer to its public. Hi Thomas, who are you, what do you do and what is your know out? I'm Thomas Lorenzi, a former swimmer with a strong passion for the mountains. The trails led me to meet Saucony, become one of its ambassador and then one of the members of the Performance Italy department. I am currently responsible for athletes and events and the company's product technician. I select runners to sponsor, I manage races and events, I offer a technical training and divulgative service about all the technologies and news from Saucony. Furthermore, I am the “dad” of the Shadow Rep Italia project. My role is to coordinate activities, draw up calendars, manage customer visits and collect all the information that comes from the territory. What is the Saucony Shadow Rep Italia project? It is the personification of customer service, a sort of 2.0 customer care. It is basically a technical manager of the company who offers a
regional consultancy service in stores, informing customers about the latest Saucony news, advising which model is most suitable for that runner, and finally organizing shoe tests in the store. The shoe tests connect the company with the final consumer, who can collect advices both from our manager and from the shopkeeper. Currently the team consists of 12 people. Many belong to groups of runners, they are amateur runners or athletes of a good level, this makes them able to listen and fully immerse themselves in the specific needs of the runner. What feedback did you receive about this project and about Saucony in general? The feedbacks are extremely positive. We are getting a real increase in the perception of the brand. The proximity of the company to the stores plays a fundamental role, given not only by the visits to the cu-
54
stomer, but also by the possibility of trying several shoes at the same time. This project allows us to have a strong interaction with the end customer and a stable affiliation with the store. The capillarity of the team on the territory allows us to constantly monitor the satisfaction of shopkeepers, understand their needs and act accordingly. What is your favorite trail running shoe? I am from Belluno so my favorite activity is mountain running, I like to have a rather natural approach, so I love all shoes that offer direct, immediate, and "raw" contact with the ground. This is why my favorite off-road shoe is Peregrine with which I can express all my potential both on technical trails and on the most demanding descents. It has been my travel companion in several adventures and, as long as my body will allow me, I hope it will accompany me for a long time.

Scott Speed Carbon RC Scott Sports, leader in the design and production of sporting goods, renews its commitment in an important segment such as running with a new generation of shoes for road running.
If since 2012 the continuous development of the Kinabalu series has allowed the Swiss brand to make its way into the world of trail running, this growth certainly could not miss a shoe with other performances dedicated to road runners. Back in 2006, the company signed a contract with a Portland, Oregon, lab to create what would be Makani, the first carbon plate running shoe. In recent years Scott has been able to improve the technologies available to athletes by presenting ever lighter and more performing innovations, as in the case of the Palani model. But now, based on 10 years of research and development, Scott has created the fastest road racing shoes to date: the Speed Carbon RC. Lightweight and efficient, these shoes are able to return more energy than you put in. Carbitex DFX carbon fiber plate offers unique advantages by being dynamically flexible. When you increase speed and performance, being folded, the plate increases stiffness offering more power and efficiency. At low speeds and in walking phases, it maintains the elasticity necessary to facilitate movement. Speed Carbon is a shoe with a strong racing vocation, like the whole RC series. By holding it in your hand, its lightweight is immedia-
tely evident: in its 240 grams there is nothing superfluous. The mesh upper looks like a unique solution apparently without reinforcements. The foot is well wrapped in a lightweight and breathable TPU mesh, leaving ample movement at the ankle. The fit conveys great comfort, especially in the front, with a fairly wide and comfortable sole of the foot. The performance tongue wraps the foot well without creating compressions, improving
56
stability while running and limiting any chafing. The same spongy and waterproof material also extends over the instep and heel area. The sole/midsole area has a 5mm drop, with 30mm at the heel and 25mm at the forefoot. Here dominates a dual-density Kinetic Light Foam, the lightest and most responsive to date. It ensures even more rebound and a duration comparable to the one

of EVA. All the attention, however, is in the form, with an advanced rocker technology that gives greater efficiency: the Evolved Rocker2 platform. ER2 applies advanced understanding of biomechanical principles to promote a more dynamic running stance, reducing heel strike impacts and increasing functionality. Simply put them on, you will be able to run faster, for longer, using less energy. With Speed Carbon RC you can perceive the features that distinguish fast shoes, but with a decidedly soft impact on the ground. Its construction you can see a certain distance from the ground, an aspect that could give less sensitivity, but largely favors comfort, a feature not to be underestimated in a shoe that is a candidate to support even long distances. One of its greatest strengths is the reliability in the support and thrust phase. The structure of the shoe helps the running kinetics. At a fast pace this shoe
expresses the best of itself, releasing all its reactivity. In short, this shoes feature highest levels comfort and all the peculiarities of rolling and reactivity that are now the trademark of the company.

A new life Ferrino x Fendi BY M A R TA M A N ZO N I
Offering a new perspective of the outdoor world: it is starting from this statement that Ferrino has decided to accept Fendi's challenge to reinterpret the iconic Trivor 2 tent and the legendary Dry Up 22 backpack. A unique collaboration, created to offer the opportunity to introduce the outdoor lifestyle to those who have not yet had the opportunity to experience this extraordinary reality. Starting from an unprecedented and visionary point of view, the two prestigious brands, emblem of Made in Italy, have combined their creative ideas, their renowned quality and expertise, creating two masterpieces of style and functionality. Fendi, in fact, among some important collaborations, for its new Capsule Collection has chosen Ferrino’s Trivor 2 tent and Dry Up 22 backpack, which will be able to “trave” in the most prestigious international boutiques. The quintessential interpreter of this exceptional project has been Sarah Coleman, a multidisciplinary visual artist from New York City, who reinterprets design materials by applying them to everyday objects, infusing them with a sensation of luxury and an irony touch. According to the artist, we all deserve a second chance: it is from this philosophy that her inspirations are born, which border on art, fashion and design. What are the distinctive features of this capsule collection? How did you combine elegance and functionality? The collaboration with Ferrino is interesting precisely because it does not force Fendi fans to give up the elegance that has always distinguished the brand, but at the same time takes them by the hand, accom-
panying them to discover a new world, made of colors and fun. It is an interesting way for those who love Fendi to discover a new universe, thanks to quality products that are durable, resistant and easy to use in different situations. A unique opportunity to take immediately. You are carrying out a fashion evolution of the Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier principle that says that nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, but everything is transformed. How did you apply it in this capsule collection? Can you describe Ferrino's Trivor 2 tent and Dry Up 22 backpack? Are you satisfied with the result? Yes, I think they are great! I really like them very much. The tent is simple to set up, it is really intuitive and within everyone's reach, I like its simplicity. It is something accessible to anyone who wants to experience an outdoor adventure and is also super lightweight, which means easily transportable. The backpack is great too, I want one right away! It has a minimal design and clean lines, and is created with high quality and technical materials. It can also be worn and combined easily, both in urban contexts and for outdoor experiences, so it is super versatile. I appreciated the design and concept of the products, that are within everyone's reach, immediate. But also the great attention that the Turin brand pays to sustainability and the use of recycled materials. Where did you get the inspiration for the creative process? What I try to do with my work is to mix objects that otherwise would not interact with each other, for example by lining an old chair with a vintage
60
designer bag, which perhaps would not be used. I like to unite worlds that otherwise would not talk to each other. It seems to me that there is a sort of harmony, a kind of balance in this process, a conversation between two different realities. For the project in collaboration between Fendi and Ferrino, I prefer not to talk about inspirations but rather about functional work, which has relied on top-level outdoor experts, people who know how to realize quality products. What are the difficulties and what are the stimuli you encountered during this new challenge? At the beginning it hasn’t been that easy to enter this new dimension, but this is the type of challenge I love most, the process is always a very interesting and stimulating phase, even more than the satisfaction of seeing the final result. Combining different universes, imagining what they could become, exploring and reinterpreting brand codes, fascinates me a lot. I was really excited and motivated to give my best to make sure that the result of the work would have been something practical and efficient. I achieved it, also thanks to the considerable research effort that was carried out to create technical, functional and quality products. What is the meeting point between two icons of the outdoor and fashion world such as Ferrino and Fendi? Fendi’s Vertigo Pattern, as it is conceived, so fluid and never rigid, works very well both on the tent and on the backpack: it follows the lines in a natural way, without any forcing. Even the energetic graphic effects in summer shades and the multicolor

Many people have an emotional bond with some objects that they no longer use but do not want to throw them away: somehow I avoid having to face this detachment. We all deserve a second chance. patterns represent a unique and intriguing trait d'union. Furthermore, the combination of the high quality standards of both brands, which complement each other, works really well, and has ensured the success of this collab with exceptional results. Where did the idea of combining the Vertigo Pattern with products from the outdoor world come from? Maybe from the positive trend of the last few months in the sector? It is not necessarily a response to a trend, it is something that derives from the desire to make interact objects, fabrics and materials that usually belong to distant realities. This fusion interpretation does not necessarily mean making outdoor products fashionable, but rather offering the opportunity for a new point of view, a new perspective, a sort of bridge that leads to overcoming the space of misunderstanding. Do you like camping and outdoor experiences? Sure, I really like it! I have been camping since I was a child and I still love sleeping in a tent!
You are a visionary artist of upcycling, in what sense does your art creatively reuse products and materials with a touch of irony? What is the appeal of giving objects a new life and how do you interact with them? It all starts with choosing the materials I’m going to use: they must have great quality and last for a long time. It happens that some people are intimidated by sitting on a chair lined with a fabric from a high fashion house, and I try to break this preconception, this awe of luxury items. The idea from which I start is to offer a new life to unused objects: this reduces consumerism and avoids throwing away a product that combined with another can instead become something new, which still has so much to offer and which will be used in everyday life. Many people have an emotional bond with some objects that they no longer use but do not want to throw them away: somehow I avoid having to face this detachment. We all deserve a second chance. we do since the beginning. If you think that, for example, the double F stands for fun fur, you can see how this is applied in accessories, through our charms, but also in menswear collections, where you unexpectedly find materials put together. I aim at something that gives a new attitude, but always being very pragmatic, because for me functionality is very important. I love finding new solutions to things that may seem impossible, because nothing is impossible, it’s just a case of exploring until we can make it happen. ANNA FERRINO
I have always looked with great attention to how Fendi selects brands and approaches collaborations. When they turned to us, recognizing the value of our brand and our know-how regarding backpacks and tents, it gave me immense pleasure. A fruitful collaboration was immediately established between the teams of the two companies, facilitated by a common DNA, two Italian brands that work in their fields with greta seriousness, passion and expertise.

Wave of Change B Y S I LV I A G A L L I A N I
PHOTOS PIERRE FRECHOU
At the end of 2019, adventurous surfer Damien Castera joined the crew of the famous catamaran Nomade des Mers for a navigation of more than 1000 nautical miles (2000km) along the coasts of Mexico. From this adventure was born Wave of Change, a movie that retraced this story and that will be released on YouTube on Sunday night, June 27th.
Nomade des Mers is currently sailing around the world in search of low-tech innovation, pioneer in developing sustainable and affordable technologies. It all started in Bangladesh in 2010, when Corentin De Chatelperron, an engineer and founder of the Low-tech lab, was working on building a boat out of natural jute fibers. To prove jute’s usefulness, he set off on a solo expedition, sailing all the way to France in six months on the first prototype he named “Tara Tari.” This experience motivated Corentin to become more self-sufficient that’s why he decided to experiment for six months in the Bay of Bengal aboard a new jute-fiber boat, the “Gold of Bengal.” Along the way, he noticed the incredible ingenuity of the people he encountered as they applied simple,
accessible, and sustainable methods to address everyone’s basic needs. His interest for low-technology was born. In 2014, the Low-tech Lab started by creating a collaborative documentation platform and by setting sail on the Nomade des Mers for an aroundthe-world tour in search of low-tech innovation. He was later joined by Caroline Pultz, an interior architect originally from Belgium that fell in love with the idea of designing furniture using mycelium-based materials. On Nomade des Mers she now takes care of the living ecosystem on board and participates in brainstorming sessions about low-tech living spaces. Third member of the crew, Guénolé Conrad is an engineer from Brittany looking for adventure. After over-
65
seeing humanitarian projects in the jungles of Nicaragua, he embarked on the Nomade des Mers expedition in 2018. His role is to find low-tech projects around the world, to connect with people, and to organize stopovers for the boat. Damien Castera, together with photographer and videomaker Pierre Frechou, embarked on the catamaran taking advantage of the stopovers to slide to the rhythm of the waves. The movie that retraced this experience will also show low-technologies developed on board. Low-tech can be defined as any technology that is clean and simple. This means technologies that are affordable, made locally, have a low environmental impact, can be easily repaired, and more often

than not require a little bit of creativity. An entire encyclopedia of simple ingenious solutions to address our most basic needs: food, energy, water, and healthcare. In fact Nomade des Mers is a real-life floating laboratory with the aim of catalog and develop low-technologies all across the world. All the crew members combine their areas of expertise to fuse surfing and low-technologies. This fully self-sufficient expedition uses whatever is at hand, whether repairing an old board with mycelium (the vegetative part of mushrooms), growing food in their biosphere (spirulina, lettuce, etc), cooking with a solar oven, or even raising crickets. The only rule on board is to go with the flow of the waves and the wind, taking advantage of each stopover to surf from sunrise to sunset. A project that goes hand in hand with Picture’s philosophy of “Ride, Protect & Share” three words that represent the essence of who the company is: a snowboard, ski, surf, and outdoor clothing brand who, while not taking itself too seriously, still want to effect change. Since Picture started in 2008, it has always sought to push one step further to minimize its impact on the environment. This together with limi-
ting growth, changing conventional production models, and promoting reasonable consumption are all key pillars of this evolution. That’s why low-technologies best fit in this view thanks to their low environmental impact. We met Damien Castera himself to have some sneak peek about the upcoming movie. Hi Damien, how was the Wave of Change project born? It was born from the meeting with Corentin De Chatelperon, Nomade des Mers’ captain. We sailed together for the first time in 2019 and came the idea carry out an adventure that would combine surfing and low tech. That’s how Wave of Change was born. You joined the crew of Nomade des Mers, how did you relate with the other crew members? I joined to Nomade des Mers with photographer and videomaker Pierre Frechou. We quickly adapted to life on board and to the rest of the crew. Everyone had to take care of certain tasks on board, everyone had in charge their own low-techs. A lot of stuff to do. And then we shared surf sessions. What a good times! Nomade des Mers is a floating la-
67
boratory, what are the low-technologies it developed? Low-techs are minimalists technologies meeting basic needs in the fields of energy, food, waste management, hygiene, health, accessible to all and respectful of the environment. The idea is to test them on board, detail their mode of operation and make the construction plans freely accessible on the internet. Among the tools validated on board there were culture of spirulina and mushrooms, cricket farming, solar oven, wax for surfing based on beeswax, repair of a surfboard with mycelium, low-tech computer, cultivation of plants in hydroponics. What does it mean that this expedition is self-sufficient? The goal of this expedition was to travel in autonomy: using the winds to advance and low-tech inventions to live. Before leaving we collected unsaleable fruits and vegetables in a market in Puerto Escondido. The still edible parts were dehydrated, the rest was used to fed the crickets. Did you encounter any difficulties during the expedition? Not really. Everything went wonderfully well. This showed us that we could live with few means and a lot of imagination.

Say yes to adventure Marco & Alice ITW BY DENIS PICCOLO P H OTO S DA M I A N O L E VAT I
When and how did your first approach the mountains? Alice: The first approach I had with the mountains was thanks to my work, to photography. As a sportswoman, I was immediately attracted to this environment and to the people who were part of it, and from here was born the first incentive to improve, precisely for the photos: because the better you move in the environment and the more you know it, the better you can shoot it. Then I got more and more passionate, but like everyone at the beginning without too much experience since I came from the world of tennis. Only after having met Marco I can say that I have really started going to the mountains, with greater awareness, and for pure pleasure. Marco: I was born and raised in the mountains, with skis on my feet, but in a context of ski clubs and slopes. I have always frequented the mountains until I was 18, but without ropes and harness, just going hiking with my father, who has always been a mountain enthusiast. But my father was tied more to the context, to the environment, than to mountaineering itself. He took me to walk everywhere, even for third degrees and always without ropes. If I look back at those moments today, I think we were crazy at the time, but it is perhaps thanks to this past that I can move well on certain types of terrain. I then started ski mountaineering in the early 2000s and almost at the same time I started climbing at the crag. From the crag I moved on to multi-pitch routes, from multi-pitch routes to high mountain ridges un-
til I found myself wanting to make a living out of this passion in order to spend as much time as possible in this environment. When and where did you meet? We have known each other for years, although we are originally from the very opposite sides of northern Italy, Sauze d’Oulx and Trento. We have a lot of friends in common. We met for the first time in Piazza Duomo, in Trento. But at the time we didn't consider ourselves too much! Years later, we found ourselves at the wedding of the same mutual friend that made us meet. We liked each other, but the timing was definitely not the best! After another five years, without ever seeing or meeting, we found each other again. We had grown up, matured at distance. Each one had pursued his professional path, which, although we did not know it, had done nothing but prepare our third meeting. Did your love for the mountains help you unite even more as a couple? Alice: With Marco we do everything together. The mountain is a plus. It is certainly the place where we spend the most time, but what has contributed to our union is the fact that we want to share many moments, investing our free time together, whether it is going to the mountains, cycling, or practicing any other activity. There is a lot of complicity between us. Marco is my boyfriend, but also my best friend. I think it's great to share experiences and emotions with the person you love, and this is what united us in a strong way and that made our relationship so special.

What does it mean for you to work in an environment that you love and share it with your loved one? We believe it is essential to do a job that we enjoy. We spend much of the time of our life working, and we have been so lucky to turn our passion into a job. Furthermore, we were lucky a second time having found a person who likes to spend a lot of time in the mountains even in his/her spare time.
appreciate very much but fortunately nothing more! And it is good that the answer to this question is (and remains) short. When we didn't feel it, or there was even the slightest doubt of bad weather, or excessive heat, we always went back home aware that the mountains will remain there and we can always go back. Your “Avventuriamoci tutti” is a success. Can you tell us about this project? “Avventuriamoci tutti”, which means “Let’s all venture”, was born from the union of the passion for the mountains, for photography and filming. We started documenting our adventures to have a memory in the future, and for "fun" we started uploading the videos on YouTube. We then realized we had a small community of followers, and thanks to the our little adventures we were starting to inspire other people, so the term “Let's all venture” was born because it's not just us who venture, but we can all venture. Let's all venture wants to be a stimulus to explore, always, no matter the sport, the season or the level. It wants to be a push to live experiences. The project itself is constantly evolving, in the sense that everything depends on our climbs and adventures in the mountains. We would go to the mountains anyway, but it's nice to think that, by documenting our adventures, they can be inspiring for other people!
The mountains are beautiful, but they have many risks and dangers. When you are not together, how do you deal with the concern for the other one? Alice: I have yet to learn how to manage my worries. Obviously it is wonderful to go to the mountains together but I know very well that it cannot always be like this because it happens that sometimes Marco wants to carry out a more demanding project with some of his friends or colleagues, or he finds himself in the mountains for his work. The mountain is his habitat, I know that Marco is happy there and that what he does gives him great satisfaction. It reassures me to know that he is very cautious and considerate. In addition, we have been using a satellite device for two years, so even if the phone doesn’t work for two days we can be in touch and tell each other that everything is fine. Marco: I solved the problem. After Alice scared me a lot this winter, now in the mountains she is either comes with me or comes with me!
Is it difficult to make a living out of the mountains? I would say no, you can make a living out of the mountains, we would not change this lifestyle for anything in the world.
The most beautiful and the most difficult moment you shared in the mountains? Each climb we faced has been thrilling in its own way. La Barre des Ecrins was the one with the most beautiful sunrise, as well as our first 4000 together. The Matterhorn, on the other hand, was the most emotionally climb. Don Quixotte the longest route. And for each one of them we could mention a characteristic that distinguishes it. The only thing that remains constant is pizza and beer/s once the climb is over, the same evening! Fortunately, there was not a single super difficult moment. Each climb brought with it some worries, some psychophysical downturns, mostly dictated by fatigue. We faces some climbs in the fog that we did not
Future project? We have a very random list of climbs we would like to do but we don't plan anything in advance. We live for the day and try to fit everything between work commitments, weather, and the desire to work hard.
We believe it is essential to do a job that we enjoy. We spend much of the time of our life working, and we have been so lucky to turn our passion into a job.

The infinite run Roberto Isolda BY F R A N C E S C O PAC O G E N T I LU C C I PHOTOS DENIS PICCOLO
To most people, this niche discipline that is ultrarunning may seem absurd, incomprehensible and a little bit crazy. Long distance running, especially if we talk about distances beyond the marathon, are already considered extravagant, and in fact we are talking about a niche of runners, even if the number of participants over the years has increased exponentially. However, if for some reason it now seems acceptable to run many hours on trails, very long distances on road instead represent a niche in the niche of ultrarunners. Yet there are runners who push the concept of running to bring it back even more to its essence, eliminating the landscape component: they not only run on road, but often even on tracks of one or a few kilometers, to the extreme limit of running often around the athletics track for hours and hours. In short, by now you have understood it, we are talking about those runners who run fifty, one hundred, two hundred or three hundred kilometers around the 400-meter tartan athletics ring. The more classic distance gives way to time trials, that means six, twelve or twenty-four hour-run on track. Let’s think about it, why swimming in a 25-meter chlorinated pool back and forth, without seeing any views, without listening to music or talking to anyone is somehow acceptable, while running on track seems somehow absurd? I believe it is a mental limitation that for many people seems insurmountable or inconcei-
vable, yet there is a mystical and magical component in a twenty-four hour-run on track. In my experience I have never (yet) tried anything like this, so I decided to ask a few questions to Roberto Isolda, a rider from Varese, who is a great athlete of this discipline, to understand something more. Two word about Rob: he is a runner who has explored the discipline of ultrarunning far and wide, he has a very beautiful attitude towards running, a contagious joy for this sport and his passion is precisely this type of races. Rob loves running to the point of not disdaining running 50 or 100km on the treadmill, he is top 5 at the 100km del Passatore (a very famous road race) and was the only Italian invited to a 24 hour-run in the UK, organized by Centurion Running. Rob, let's start from the beginning: what is your favorite aspect of running? How did you come to race your first 24 hour-run? Running empties and fills you with new thoughts and priorities, for me it represents a simple activity that I like to do at the end of the day to free myself from accumulated stress. I started running long distances on track out of laziness: having water every 400 meters without carrying the weight, interrupting training at the first hint of crisis and not looking at the trail without the anxiety of getting lost are aspects that make the athletic gesture much simpler.
74
75
76
Why does a long distance runner who starts running on trails then move to the road and finally to the track? Usually it is the opposite in fact, but for work needs I started to maximize the time available. In the Varese area there are some beautiful trails, but that hour to get there could already become a good part of the training.
competitions? I usually train on track, two hours counterclockwise and two hours clockwise, alternating the work of the physiotherapist. If I can't go on the track, I take my water bottle and I run on the ring of the so-called Ethiopian Prealpine Plateau that is close to my home: it is a 6km dirt trail between corn plantations and horse farms inside the Ticino Park, a very monotonous trail, as I like it.
What are your 3 dream races or the 3 goals you would like to achieve as an athlete? I would like to run an American 100 miles, one of those run on dusty dirt roads, just as I would like to run the Spartathlon or run again the 100 del Passatore: the nice thing about alienating yourself on track or on a treadmill is that whatever the competition context will be, everything becomes super cool.
Is there any runner you are inspired by? I like the genuineness and simplicity of those who don't get too paranoid and don't find excuses for their defeats. One of the person that encompasses these qualities is Giorgio Calcaterra, although he’s gradually losing competitiveness, he emotionally moves a large audience, both for the legacy of his palmares, and for the positive messages he shares.
How do you feel before starting a 24 hour-run? How do you feel during the run and at the end of it? What emotions do you feel? Track races look like those movies with huge plot holes, you don't understand where the director is taking you and you wonder if there really is a way to explain what you are experiencing. Then sometimes you discover it and other times you don't. The beginning is always euphoric but after ten hours you realize it looks like a Romero's movie with all those zombies.
Tell us an anecdote that happened to you in one of these races. Before we talked about 24 hour races but you know what the funny thing is? I've never finished one! Years ago, around the fifteenth hour, I decided to lie down to rest for a few minutes on the camp bags that the organization made available in a room close to the track. I woke up the next morning when there was less than an hour to go. Is there anything you would like to say to the riders who will read this interview? The charm of running is its essentiality, we rediscovered it with the lockdown. You don't need to have races planned, you don't need breathtaking mountain trails, a pair of shoes is enough.
Are there any boring moments that make you hate running sometimes? The worst part is the central one, even in a six hours race. In fact, usually the playlist starts playing in the headphones and you think about something else or if the people around you are nice you get to know each other and share some laughs. In fact, the beauty of ultra races, unlike 10 to 50km road races, is the sharing and the human aspect that represent for me the most important part of the race.
What would you like to say to the non-runners who will read this interview? Get a pair of shoes, sooner or later will come that bad day or that strange sense of restlessness generated by various problems. I anticipate only that running has solved mine.

Intuition and intelligence are the cornerstones of any successful idea. Both the courage to leap into the void and the ability to control your movement once flying are required. The intuition of René Ramillon and Andrè Vincent was not a small one, and the reputation that the brand Moncler still boasts today is certainly the result of a continuous combination of daring and intelligence. Head and heart.
tents with telescopic structures, up to the then unclimbed summit of K2. Like all great stories, this one too begins with modest intentions and visionary ambitions. The first down jackets appear for the first time on the shoulders of the workers of the small mountain factory, with the aim of sheltering them from the cold. Still talking about intelligence, it must be said that the mountaineer Lionel Terray has been an incredibly visionary and has seen, right from the start, the mountaineering potential of the young brand, glimpsing, on the shoulders of those first workers, a possible specialist line for the most difficult expeditions. Outside the factory, on higher and more distant mountains.
“Moncler” is a simple word, now assimilated by millions of people around the world. Few people, however, know that its origin comes from the abbreviation of Monestier de Clermont, the small mountain village near Grenoble where, in 1952, two men, in a small factory, unknowingly started a global phenomenon. From the first padded sleeping bags, to

From a town of just five square kilometers, to the immensity of the Karakorum. In 1954 Moncler begins its rise: from the shoulders of his own workers, to those of Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni. The down jackets, children of the humble French laboratory, warm up the feat that will remain in the history of mountaineering and in the heart of every Italian: the first steps on the second highest peak on the planet. From that moment, a succession of sporting adventures in the harshest climates on earth officially sanctioned the birth of a marvel.
stand out stylistically without arrogance, they are unique. Mandrino also seems to have hit the mark in the attention to detail, another essential quality in mountain life and beyond. So here we find heat-sealed zips, innovative solutions that allow the passage of air into fabrics while maintaining high resistance to bad weather and very light materials that have a double advantage: agility of movement and minimum bulk. And it is precisely the freedom of movement that, climbing at high altitude, we appreciated the most. Linda and Mattia, two real mountain lovers, felt at ease on their home mountains. Winning the trust of mountain people is hard, Moncler has succeeded.
Just a few words, a necessary preamble to tell you about the new “Moncler Grenoble” collection that we put to the test on Monte Rosa. We too left from a small village, Alagna, at the foot of the wildest face of the entire massif, and reached the Indren Glacier, between the Pyramid Vincent and Punta Giordani.
The collection is characterized by its transversality, total freedom in creative choices and a double bond with nature. The last gem, in fact, is the brand's attention to sustainability. It shows that it has taken note of an epochal social change by trying, season after season, to create collections and garments that can last over time. It seems to us a good way for a big brand like this to respect the environment by contrasting, as far as possible, the serious transformation that is now taking place.
The new collection, designed by Sandro Mandrino, clearly intends to bring the brand back to its origins. Escaping, now as then, upwards. And, just like then, Moncler does it with the style that has always distinguished its character. The collection is complete and allowed us to climb the first section by mountain bike, and then continue on foot.
The Italian designer claims that the essence of Moncler Grenoble line is made of technique, quality, performance, heritage and style. And now we can only confirm it.
The minimalist design of the garments is appreciated, these products have the ability to

The Moonwalk Traverse BY M A R TA M A N ZO N I
PHOTO ROLO GARIBOTTI
There are those who call it a masterpiece. Others, like Colin Haley, define it as “the most impressive solo climb ever made in Patagonia”. With The Moonwalk Traverse, Sean Villanueva O’Driscoll, considered one of the strongest mountaineers in the world, has outdone himself. And he has achieved an undertaking that is destined to enter Patagonian history. 86
Patagonia is your second home, how was born the idea of The Moonwalk Traverse on Fitz Roy? I arrived in Patagonia in January 2020, before the pandemic, with Nicolas Favresse, my partner of many adventures, and we opened some new routes there. Then in mid-March Nico had to go back to Europe. At that point my plan was to stay in Argentina until the end of March, only then the lockdown started and they canceled all flights. I contacted the embassy in order to go home, but at the same moment I realized that I was in a wonderful pla-
ce, and so I decided to stay. Instead of the two months plannes, I stayed in Patagonia for a year and a half. I have always had this traverse in mind, I found it very fascinating: so long and wild, it offered a unique opportunity to experience a memorable adventure. I admired the skyline from below and I was sure it would be epic, but I had always thought of doing it with a climbing partner. You lived for a year and a half in your van in El Chaltén: is it during these days that you had the idea of trying the traverse? Has
87
anyone inspired you? During winter, daylight hours are few, so I spent a lot of time alone reading, playing and reflecting in the van. One of these nights, inspired by my friend Silvia Vidal, a very strong Spanish mountaineer who always carries out incredible projects and often spends more then thirty days alone on immense walls without contacts of any kind and no electronic equipment, I decided that I wanted to try a similar adventure, completely alone. For the first time, I didn't have an upcoming project with Nico and it
88
seemed like a unique opportunity. And so I came up with what I called The Moonwalk Traverse: it seemed like a long enough and demanding project, but I thought it was impossible, especially for the short windows of good weather that there are in the area. But then I thought that having a dream would certainly not hurt me, and so I began to fantasize, to inform myself better and to slowly believe that maybe it could be done. The traverse took you six days (February 5 to 10, 2021), just one more day than the Caldwell-Honnold team, which made them earn a Piolet d'Ort. Did you expect to take so little time? I knew that the Caldwell-Honnold team had taken five days to complete the traverse and therefore I thought I needed a good weather window of at least ten days, certainly no less than six, also because I was solo climbing, self-insured, and therefore slower. And so I patiently waited. Then, on my fortieth birthday, a six-day window came. The dream was becoming a reality. How did you move? I made the traverse in the opposite direction of Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold, from south to north, because it had never been done, it was something new. In Patagonia, in fact, it is north faces that get the most sun. Did you have any difficulties? On the first day, while I was carrying the backpack, which at the beginning weighed very much, about thirty kilos, some stones fell from above and damaged the rope, fortunately not drastically. I thought the expedition was over, but then I repaired it with tape and continued. The rope lasted all six days, and then, just when I had finished the traverse, it broke completely: at that point it would not really be usable anymore.
Did you have a telephone or any electronic devices with you? No, absolutely nothing. I also decided not to tell anyone what I wanted to do because they would think I was crazy. Only on the morning I left I told two people about it, and during the traverse I met just three other groups. Then, I don't know how, when I got back to El Chaltén everyone knew what I had done and cheered me, it was a wonderful moment. I have also received congratulatory emails from the best mountaineers in the world and from many journalists. What is the local population like? Did you feel lonely while living in the van? I really enjoyed having some time to be alone but I also met so many extraordinary people who have then become very good friends: the El Chaltén climbers community is really hospitable, open and generous, they welcomed me warmly right away, accepting me as part of them. Some people cry when reaching the top, others scream, others laugh. You play the flute on each peak. What do you play? My mother is Irish: I am very attached to that land and its traditions, especially to its music, so on each peak I play some melody from that country. They are important moments because they remind me that I climb mountains to have fun and to experience intense and special moments. During the climb you celebrated your 40th birthday. You are happy? Do you have any regrets or remorse? No regrets or remorses, I am happy, I live a wonderful, dreamy life. I am grateful for my friends and for everything I have. The Moonwalk Traverse is it the most exceptional experience you have had? I don't know, for sure it was really special. I was full of
89
both physical and mental energies, in a really positive mood, I lived intensely every moment up there. Everything went perfectly, and I was very lucky with the weather. Is there an Italian mountaineer that you particularly esteem? Certainly Walter Bonatti and his life’s philosophy, and then Matteo della Bordella and Ragni di Lecco which are my great friends and have a very positive energy. Future projects? I am leaving with Nico for an exploration expedition on a sailing boat in Greenland, we are going to climb any interesting routes we will find.

I'm on my way to Jacopo Larcher and Barbara Zangerl's house when they answer the phone. “We went to the crag, we thought we would come back earlier”. But these beautiful high-pressure days make you never want to leave the rock, especially if you are as strong as they are. She is Austrian, he’s Italian, they share a lot besides their passion for rock and climbing. Each of them need their own space but they are a passionate couple who have fun both vertically and in everyday life. This is demonstrated by the eleven days spent on El Capitan during the first solo repetition of Magic Mushroom, one of the hardest routes they have ever faced together. The harmony between them is real, it can be perceived even without seeing their faces. Smiles and knowing glances when answering a question emerge from the sounds of their voices. They enjoy themselves whenever they can by doing what they do best, climbing alongside brands like Black Diamond, Vibram, La Sportiva and The North Face that support them in every adventure. Together they have achieved prestigious climbs such as the first solo ascent of Gondo Crack, in Switzerland, Free Zodiac, on El Cap, Speed Integral, at the Voralpsee crag, and again the speed climb of Odysee, the most difficult route on Eiger. A great palmares that tells a lot about the athletic talent of the two climbers, but does not reveal what lies behind the activity on the wall. Jacopo and Barbara, how did you meet? The climbing community is
quite small. We met several times on the crag, but never had a strong bond. Then, in 2013, at Melloblocco we started talking and a few months later we got together. We found immediately well together, thanks also to the fact that we can share a passion that goes beyond everyday life. Do you ever get bored of each others? We have moments when we want to do something separately, but being both part of the world of climbing is also a great opportunity. It allows us to understand more easily why climbing is so much important in our lives. It's a deep understanding of what drives you to try certain projects that carry you away from home for months. While for Jacopo climbing also coincides with his work, for you Barbara is not the main activity. Have you ever thought of leaving your job at the hospital to fully devote yourself to climbing? Absolutely not. My profession is really important to me, it helps me maintain a balance in life, which otherwise would be governed entirely by climbing. If I had to work in a gym or otherwise spend my time only with activities related to climbing, I would soon lose motivation. Instead, I like
93
the daily routine, having shifts to follow, having to fit climbing between one activity and another. These are all things that push me to dream even more and to work hard to make my dreams come true without feeling the pressure. Jacopo, in 2011, after years of competitions, you left the competitive world to devote yourself to a more exploratory climbing. What happened? I felt a strong need to change. Competitions have taken me all over the world, but how can you say you've been to Australia or America if you've only seen gyms in those countries? Over time I began to develop a strong sense of discomfort which eventually led me to the decision to quit to enjoy a different climbing. It was a really difficult choice, the National team was also involved. In the end I finally decided to leave the competitive world but from a certain point of view I remained in the sector. What do you mean? I have never took part in any competition again, not even on an amateur level, but I’m currently working as a route setter for climbing competitions. It is a job that I really like and it allows me to still experience the world of competition, but in a more relaxed way.

It wasn't just a project, but six years in which I grew up with the route. A magnificent journey of maturation that witnessed both my development in trad climbing and as a person.
What has been your toughest project? Barbara: For me Magic Mushroom on El Cap. A really hard route with difficult cracks and then, even if it seems obvious, staying on the wall for eleven days is not at all easy. Jacopo: Certainly Magic Mushroom is one of the most difficult routes climbed together. However, if I have to think about the hardest project, Tribe in Cadarese immediately comes to mind. It wasn't just a project, but six years in which I grew up with the route. A magnificent journey of maturation that witnessed both my development in trad climbing and as a person. I still remember the great uncertainty that accompanied me up to a couple of weeks before I succeeded in the climb. It was really difficult to keep trying it without the evidence that it was really possible. I just trusted my feelings. What do you feel when you face a project like this where you have no certainty, where you have to try and try again several times. What drives you towards a new attempt? Talking about Tribe, it’s curiosity, the
desire to find out if it would actually be possible or not. There were moments of great difficulty. At first I made progress quickly, then I got stuck and it was difficult to keep motivation high but curiosity pushed me towards a new attempt. Then again to another and on like this. During difficult moments you have to learn to manage those feelings, those thoughts that want to convince you that you have just lost time. What does climbing represent in your life today? We could say that it is an important part of our life, but that would not be correct. It's a life style. It’s impossible to think about our days without climbing, without new projects. It offers us moments of great happiness, it allows us to get to know and to explore the world. For how many years have you been part of the Black Diamond family? We have been part of this family for so many years that it's hard to remember the first meeting. For us Black Diamond is like a family where we can talk about projects and ambitions with the certainty of being understo-
97
od and supported. Almost all of the company's interns are climbers, or in any case mountain enthusiasts. This facilitates dialogue because we know that they really understand what is behind every idea, every ambition. It is nice to see on the other side eyes that light up with your own joy when you talk about a dream. What's your favorite product? Difficult question. We could say all of them, each product in its own way is indispensable for us to carry out our projects. If we really have to choose, we should mention the Black Diamond C4, a traditional friend that is lighter than the previous versions, which allows us to practive the kind of climbing we love most. The Solution harness also deserves a mention, perfect when you want to spend a lot of time on the crag. Can you tell us a quote or a motto that particularly stimulates you? Barbara: Life is not measured through the breaths we take, but through the moments that take our breath away. Jacopo: Change is the only constant.

help but go back to a particular place, in Italy, in the north part of Sardinia, which is called Cala Sarraina, where I often go at sunset. But I find it exciting to go there also during the day when the mistral cools the daytime hours with its strong blow that, coming from the north, shakes the sea among the red rocks that protrude imposingly from the water, transforming the landscape into a painting that reminds me of German romanticism.
Enchantment and surprise are the feelings that capture us in front of so much beauty. The vibrant sun that sets towards the horizon, the shades of the sea that turns into a fiery expanse, the dazzling color of the vegetation pierced by light, the infinite palette of natural colors around us, the aromatic and intoxicating smell given by plants after a hot day, the last sound of insects before the night's rest, the flight of seabirds preparing for fishing. Sight, hearing and smell allow us to enjoy all this beauty that is transformed into a deep and natural pleasure that explodes within us.

Park your car at the edge of the road that leads to the sea, in Cala Sarraina you can choose to take the trail on the right and head west or the left one, heading east, after a first stretch north. Both directions put you on the trail of a longer route, the so-called Trekking delle Bocche, which winds along the stretch of coast that from Isola Rossa (Trinità d'Agultu and Vignola) arrives in Santa Reparata (Santa Teresa di Gallura) between the characteristic granites of Gallura overlooking the mythological Strait of Bonifacio and the nearby Corsica. A little known and explored coastal trail along 47km that can be divided into short stages. Almost entirely flat, the trail, between the typical Mediterranean scrub and the suggestive pink granite walls, runs along enchanted places, hidden inlets with crystal clear waters, beautiful beaches such as Tinnari, Li Cossi, Lu Litattaroni, amazing panoramic points, but also well-known tourist locations such as Costa Paradiso, Porto Bello di Gallura and Vignola Mare.

On hot and lazy days, starting right from Cala Sarraina, I like walking west, stopping to climb the gentle curves of the granite stones met along the way, arriving in Tinnari, giving myself a refreshing bath and then returning, on the same route, crossing the darkness surmounted by an indescribable amount of stars. I cannot help but, before going back to the state road and leaving the crystalline beauty of this place behind, stop along the hairpin turns and pick up a wild ingredient that I love. The area is dotted with wild plants of Ficus Carica, I like their common fruits that can be found our tables but it also offer us their own leaves. I like to pick them by choosing the youngest and most tender ones and, once back home, squeeze them in the extractor to obtain a greenish and fragrant liquid. The organoleptic features of these leaves are unique and unexpected. They are reminiscent of vanilla, hazelnuts, coconut and tropical
fruits, perfectly embracing the feelings of enveloping warmth generated by the images of the sunset. The extract can be used to flavor a yogurt by adding honey or walnuts or into water to flavor a drink. I also like to use it as a condiment on fresh summer dishes, while the leaves can be used as a wrap for cooking dishes in the oven or in a pan. They will be, for those who love to explore even with the palate, a truly unexpected discovery.

Run on the Wild Side ITW BY DENIS PICCOLO
P H OTO S BY PAO LO SA R TO R I
She is an osteopath who has recently discovered a passion for running in the mountains. He is a personal trainer who also runs an online fitness platform. They are Ilaria Magistri and Stefano Bianchi, friends and partners on mountain trails, united by a strong love for trail running. For them, training and competing together means supporting each other and sharing this strong passion that unites them. Ilaria, when did you start practicing trail running? I started trail running in 2019, Stefano instead started practicing with some friends who have a sportswear store specialized in trail running.
ning led me to integrate the two things that now find their perfect union in trail running. You tested Nike Pegasus Trail 3. What feeling did it give you? We had a great time! Pegasus Trail 3 proved to be a fast, highly cushioned and comfortable shoe. Both on rocky terrain and in changes of direction it proved to be reactive and performing. We both think it's a truly cushioned, comfortable model that guarantees grip and support on all types of terrain.
Ilaria, what is your relationship with trail running? For me, running means freedom, and running in nature is the greatest form of freedom I can imagine. How does trail running fit into your professional and personal life? One of the great advantages of being freelancers is precisely that of being able to include sport and free time as we wish in our professional life, and that also includes training and trail running.
What is your best advice on getting started with trail running? The best advice for those wishing to approach trail running would be to focus on excellent footwear and invest in quality equipment, such as technical clothing ideal for every season.
Ilaria, how did you fall in love with trail running? I fell in love with trail running while hiking, and my love for run-

What I like the most about trail running is that, unlike road running, I am not tied to looking at the clock, to keeping pace or set times. I prefer to run following my feeling, according to my body and listening to my heartbeat. Furthermore, the breathtaking views that this fantastic sport offers are incomparable to those of road running.
What is your best trick to stay injuryfree? The best way to avoid injuries is the shoe and the gradualness of training, it is certainly recommended to follow the advice of experienced sportsmen and professionals who can best recommend you about this activity.
Can you tell me about your relationship and what the other represents for you? We have a great connection, we always manage to find many things to talk about during our training, this means that we never get bored of each others’ company. We are very profound sometimes, telling each other a little about our lives, in addition to all this, together we share the beauty of the mountain and its silences.
Stefano, in your opinion, what does trail running give you that road running does not? What I like the most about trail running is that, unlike road running, I am not tied to looking at the clock, to keeping pace or set times. I prefer to run following my feeling, according to my body and listening to my heartbeat. Furthermore, the breathtaking views that this fantastic sport offers are incomparable to those of road running.
What does running in nature mean to you? It means connection, both with ourselves and with what surrounds us. It means taking some time for ourselves. It is a time in which we can isolate and disconnect a little from work and daily life, reconnecting with ourselves and everything around us.
Stefano, what is the most incredible place where you ran? I’ve traveled a lot, both for work and for leisure, and I have been lucky enough to be able to run in Peru, in the Colca Canyon. Ilaria, on the other hand, has always told me about the trails in the Courmayeur area, around Mont Blanc.
It is very difficult to find a partner to run with, what is the reason why you train and compete together? The reason why we train and compete together is because we always have a similar pace, sometimes it happens that one has to wait for the other but then we always reach the finish line together.
How did you meet and how was your strong running connection born? We met while attending the same university, but in reality we developed our connection while running.
Ilaria, a dream you would like to achieve? On a sporting level, I would like to run the Tor de Geants one day. Stefano, what about you? Competing in Patagonia, in Tierra del Fuego.

I’ve been known Jussi since, as a kid, I started snowboarding. I often met him during shooting and contest I took part in my previous photographer’s life. His style, clean and unmistakable, typical of many Finnish riders, has proven to be strong in many important events such as the Olympics, X-Games and US Open. Being a pro rider brings you to travel a lot, but most of them travel without really observing, without perceiving the immense value and endless connections and contaminations that this type of life can give you. But Jussi has always observed and assimilated, and from the beginning, he started documenting the world through his camera. Life is then made of meetings and coincidences, and it happens, while you’re looking at a shooting for Alba Optics, to discover that the photographer is Jussi himself.
Jussi, you have been one of my favorite snowboarders. I remember you having your camera almost always with you. My mom was a photographer and worked in a dark room developing black and white images, so I grew up around that and I was always interested about the process of photography. I got into photography around 17 when I started traveling for snowboarding and my passion for photography grew organically from there.
project was born and how it evolved? Mizu started from the desire to reduce single-use plastic waste, we wanted to create a cool brand that would inspire younger and like minded people to jump on board with our mission. It’s really cool to see how having a reusable water bottle it’s now the new normal while, when we started Mizu over 10 years ago, it seemed like a strange concept for some people. What do you miss and what you don’t miss from when you were a snowboarder? I miss the adventure side, going to explore new places around the world. But on the other hand, I love staying home now with my family and have more normal life. I’ve sort of transformed my passion for snowboarding into cycling and photography. The biggest thing I don’t miss is feeling like I have been on a car crash every day after filming, my body feels so much better now, it took me about 2 years to get my body in good shape after 20 years of abuse.
It seems that many artists and creatives come from the world of snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing in general. I guess skateboarding and snowboarding are a creative fields, photography is similar because it is the way you express yourself though the lens instead of a board. Also, as a snowboarder you always have to adapt, make something out of nothing, have a work ethic, the same that you will have to apply in commercial photography. You are one of the founders of Mizu. Can you tell me how this

Let's talk about photography and about you. What do you do now? How is your life? I do commercial active/lifestyle photography. I get to work with some amazing brands that appreciate authentic content. I do lot of work with brands such as Specialized, Thule, New Belgium Brewing and of course Alba. I absolutely love what I do, I get to work with people that love what they do and capture their passion, it makes my work easy.
focus on my own craft and try to create a feel and a style that belongs to me, instead of trying to mimic too much other artists’ work. We got in touch with you through the guys from Alba Optics, which are real crazy people, you took some beautiful photos for them, can you tell me how the collaboration with them was born and where did the shooting take place? It came out about very organically, Alba is a really cool brand that wants to show cycling in different way from some other brands and I’ve always appreciated that. With a couple of friends we did an overnight bike camping trip to Joshua Tree.
What kind of photography do you like? Is there any contemporary outdoor photographer you are inspired by? The key is to work with people that love what they do and want to share that, it creates an energy that will show in photography. Of course location and lighting are important, but I think the scene and the people are always the most important factor. There are lots of photographers I look up to, but at the same time I want to

rest and we are moving towards a search for exploration.I think there will always be a competitive side to everything, that’s just who we are as humans. But the outdoors is for sure blowing up, people are looking out for more real experiences and challenges. As a family, our kids always talk about the trip we did to Iceland or all the camping trips we did. Outdoors means adventures and that’s what life is all about!
It’s a magical place and cycling is always best way to see a place. We didn’t have much of a plan, we just decided to go with the flow and see what we would have find. Sleeping under the stars in the desert is one of the coolest things you can do. What does the word outdoor mean to you? It’s freedom. I’m always at peace when I’m outdoors, even just walking in the forest makes me feel so much better. Also the adventures and memories you have outdoors are amazing, I feel very lucky that I get to work outdoors in awesome places, it’s the best.

Running is a humble thing Mattia Bertoncini BY CHIARA GUGLIELMINA

119
In the modern world of smog-gray metropolises, muffled by the horns of exhausted traffic, men run to buy time. Up in the mountains, on the highest ridges beyond the grazing cows, men run to freeze time. We persist in looking for a motivation at any cost, in the strenuous search for a universal explanation. It is often the simplest answer that hides the truth.
every time, it is a lesson to remember. Here it all begins at low altitude, between green woods and easy trails. You pass through pastures and a cows, shelters and tourists in order to arrive on expanses of granite rock. Up there there is almost no one, some beaks, chamois if you are lucky and a few expert climbers. Beyond, just a wall of ice and stone: deep crevasses, hanging seracs and unstable rocks await those who set the summit of Monte Rosa as their destination.
“Sir, why are you running? Are you doing this for world peace? Are you doing this for women's right? Or for the environment? Or for animals?” “I just felt like running.” said Forrest. “They couldn't believe that one could run so fast, for no particular reason” he added. In this dialogue taken from the famous movie Forrest Gump by Robert Zemeckis, there’s an example of a man capable of extraordinary undertakings, without forced motivations to justify the purpose, the only thing that counts for him stands out strongly: his will.
With Mattia I went on a trek right there, where what begins as a narrow green tongue then opens onto a glacial basin guarded by Punta Giordani, the Pyramid Vincent, Punta Parrot and again by the noble Punta Gnifetti.
- The excursion may have ended before of what you will read, but in these days I let my imagination fly, it’s all I have left. -
Today I have the feeling that intention is no longer a sufficient reason to move us. There seems to be a higher purpose, at any cost. As if the elegance of the alternating movement of legs and arms were not enough for running. Forrest ran because he wanted to run. And there is nothing stupid about this. On the contrary, in the obsessive search for a purpose at all costs, I find nonsense. And a little bit of sadness. A man with physical disability and low intelligence was the character played by Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. Mattia is in no way inferior to anyone, but he is full of that simplicity that too often, today, I am unable to find.
In the mountains, everyone has their own environment. Beyond the green of the mountains, there is a hole left by an asteroid, with the rubble still moving: it is the place for a few people. This is the basin of the Piode Glacier. A refuge before the climb. A shelter among the giants. Mattia told me a lot of stories, moving like the landscape. In the green of the trees, on the trail walked by many people, he remained on the surface. Shyly he began to tell me about himself: “I'm Mattia Bertoncini and I live in Valsesia. Before running, I fell in love with the mountains. My grandparents have always had animals and my mom used to take me up there, among cows and goats, when I was just forty days old. From when I was a child until I was seventeen my summers were in the pastures, when I was not at school I was there. I liked to live as a breeder, a shepherd.” This is the 1500 meters’ Mattia.
I know Mattia first of all because he is from Valsesia. Then also because of his silent fame that precedes him. A hard worker: he runs a lot, he says little, he thinks well. He never speaks without thinking, his running has taught him that it is better to save oxygen for his legs. In Valsesia, especially if you venture under the largest massif of the Alps, it may happen that something remains in your heart. For me,

In the mountains there is a well-marked watershed between the lowlands and the highlands. You can't see it, but you can feel it. An invisible barrier that can be misleading. It is generally located above 2500 meters, but there is no precise rule. Like the famous Dante's gate, beyond which only “the lost people” are.
Mattia is almost as small as me. My difficulty in following in his footsteps is not justified by my short legs this time. We gain altitude quickly, approaching the first mountain pastures and he, who probably feels more at ease, continues: "The passion for the mountains understood as exploration, as a discovery through the journey, was passed on to me by my father who was an alpinist.” In the tone of his voice, as the green begins to mix with the first boulders of gneiss, I can perceive excitement. Mattia's story goes up with us. “My father climbed many peaks when he was young. I was eleven when he first took me to Gnifetti, Tagliaferro and Corno Bianco.” Challenging Valsesia’s classics climbs for expert hikers, often with passages on ropes. In short, not that bad for an eleven years old. He bends down to tie a shoe and with a spontaneous movement he passes his fingers on the rock still wet with as if to thank it: "Probably from those little big climbs with dad I realized that those spaces belonged to me.”
marmots whistling near and far. Beyond that, the mountain will probably sing and some hawks, an eagle, perhaps even a bearded vulture, and nothing more will shout. Meanwhile Mattia accelerates his pace without realizing it and his story becomes dense.
I have the impression of starting to feel more present Mattia at high altitudes. I let him go on while we leave the last refuge behind us before the big hole: Barba Ferrero. The last outpost before the granite and glacial amphitheater that awaits us. In my mind Mattia, as Virgil, explains to me that from now on I must abandon all suspicion. Only in this way, just like Virgil and Dante, we will be able to enter the secret things, that is, the places separated from the world.
“However, I haven't always run. I started with football, can you believe it? But it didn't take me long to realize it wasn't my sport. I have always preferred to take on my responsibilities, for better or for worse. A team sport does not fully allow this. I changed my mind and took part in some cross country races with the school and then I finally started, thanks to athletics, to run.” I feel that there is still something missing from the story. As if Mattia had found the "what": running. But not yet the “where". Meanwhile, we continue to climb and he finally slows down to drink. We are almost in the center of the big hole. The presence of the surrounding walls becomes heavier and heavier, but we are light. Mattia looks around and take a deep breath...
We are exactly on that border line and the sounds change with us too. The distant shouting of the holidaymakers gives way to the ticking of our poles on the hard stone. Further down, in the green, bees buzz, goats bleat and cows bellow. Up here, in the streaked gray, only a few bellowing in the distance, a roe deer and
“In the end, the first to really push me was Carluccio Chiara. -Come on, come and run with us! Come and try! - he told me. He has given me a lot and I feel I owe him a lot.” he says closing the water bottle.
12 4
12 5
“You know…” he goes on almost whispering: “They practiced mountain running.”
Mattia’s silhouette, seen from down here, stands out on everything around him. Legs and arms alternate with such naturalness as to seem separate from the uneven ground. I understand in that moment that I will never feel such a harmony. I am one of many people, but I am fortunate to know someone of those few.
That sentence whispered right in the center of the hollow echoes right into the cracks of our mountains and comes back to me. I feel it strong. I don't have time to drink because Mattia has already left. The Mattia of 3000 meters. I understand from his footsteps that his real arena is beyond that basin, outside that amphitheater. It is his own stage without spectators. Alone. Up. In the silence of ridges. As expected, all around me I hear nothing but my panting and our feet stepping on rocking stones. Granite blends with white flows, "our" Rosa welcomes us. Moreover, the name “rosa", that means “pink", given to the massif we love so much does not refer to the color of its peaks at dawn. In ancient language it meant "ice". In truth, it was and is the Ice Mountain.
I reach him on the ridge, with my steps. Once up there we stop. Beyond just the Signal Crest: a demanding mountaineering ascent climb up to the Regina Margherita hut which, like a sweet and austere mother, controls us from above. The air that hits us in the face is pungent, but peaceful. It welcomes us. That edge of ice that separates Valsesia from the Macugnaga Valley is our arrival. We are not climbers. Not yet at least. We take off our t-shirts to wipe away the sweat and stay bare-chested just to feel alive. And probably too slim, both of us. While Mattia hands me the hot tea, he looks even higher.
Towards the exit from the infinite hole, a red parallelepiped shines, it is the Resegotti Hut.
"I would like to climb a little more” he says to himself. He looks at the horizon and continues:
Unexpectedly, just when the fixed ropes begin to face the steepest part of the basin, Mattia adds: “I grew up a lot in those early years up and down the mountains and all of a sudden, when I was sixteen, I got hooked. I wanted to start running seriously. I realized that I do really well, that I had some potential, perhaps.”
"Competitiveness encourages you to do more and more. The strength at some point lies in knowing how to control this impulse. In knowing how to find a balance. The journey to go up is long, like today’s. But it takes very little to fall. A solitary and individual sport like this allows you to rely only on yourself and in life, even if we often delude ourselves otherwise, that's how it goes."
It climbs the final slope with enthusiasm. The fixed ropes become the handrail of the stairs of an apartment building, he knows they are there, but he doesn't need them. I prefer to enjoy the show from below, letting him perform. Here it is finally: the Mattia of 4000 meters. The sky runner.
We could talk for hours about the how and why, but in the end, Mattia runs because running is what he is. Today I saw it.
In short: In 2017 Salomon asked him to join its Team: the humble Valsesian shepherd becomes Salomon Ambassador.
And as a motivation it seems to me the most valid among the possible ones. Before returning to the realm of the many, just a few words:
In 2018 the first call-up to the Under 23 World Cup from which he will bring home:
“When I run I'm elsewhere. Don't look for me. I will not answer.
-3° place in Vertical (2018) -3° place in Sky Race (2018) -2° place in Combined (2018) -3° place in Sky Race (2019)
Don't worry. I'll be ok."

For most of the people, Sicily is a summer vacation destination, but in winter it's a draw for those looking for unusual ski touring experiences. Shanty Cipolli went in search of breathtaking scenery and exclusive skiing shots and the rare conditions he founded on Etna presented him with a unique opportunity. Hi Shanty, tell us something about you. I was born and currently live in Aosta, although I have lived in different places in my life. My passion for skiing was born very early. At the age of 2 my father took me skiing in the backpack with him for the first time and from there it was just an evolution: ski competitions, ski clubs and much more, but I was often bored, I only had fun in difficult snow situations. So I started practicing ski cross and after an injury one of my coaches pushed me to try freeriding. I started to stay more and more in the mountains and now I am also an aspiring Mountain Guide.
do you constantly look for increasingly top performances? I think it was my continuous search for difficult situations and conditions that made me grow and that still allows me to improve day after day. It is also a motivation that pushes me every day to go out and always test myself. What is your relationship with nature and the outdoors? I have always had a close relationship with nature, I have always loved the outdoor life, sleeping under the stars, bivouacking. I try to go out every moment possible because it makes me feel really good. For example, now that I have returned to live in the city center, I miss the woods a little.
What kind of skier are you? I love all snow conditions, the worse it is, the more I enjoy it! I like difficult and even complex snow situations and I try at all costs and on every slope to ski well, without ever neglecting aesthetics. The latter remains an important factor for me and in fact in the latest video in collaboration with Mammut on Etna it is the key factor.
We saw your last project with Mammut on Mount Etna, how was this idea born? In truth, it was born quite randomly. I was already on Etna to ski with Francesco Perrone because we were shooting Arriskicini, a personal project. That day it both snowed and erupted, the conditions were spectacular and so we moved as fast as possible, also contacting Mammut and the crew to carry out the project immediately.
From snow to lapilli, by now you have skied everywhere, how did you become so strong? Was it a natural evolution or

Etna is an active volcano but with very mild temperatures. Instead, you managed to show us another aspect of it. Do you think it is a truly hospitable mountain for skiers? Being used to the Alps, it turns out to be a hospitable environment! However, it can offer many possibilities. There are particular winds that blow circularly around the volcano and in a few seconds make the temperatures change, from mild heat to humid and freezing cold. Snow conditions are difficult and unstable. Not to mention the volcano which is highly unpredictable due to its continuous possible eruptions.
out, everything was fine, but at first they did not slide at all. The lapilli looks like sandpaper that hooks and blocks the ski base. Precisely for this reason I fell several times but fortunately not in dangerous points. After a few days, however, I was also able to adapt the skiing technique putting my weight a little backward, keeping the ski as flat as possible and using some tricks that made me slide a little more. The equipment in the world of skiing is essential, even more in these extreme conditions. What gears/products did you choose for this project? Did you throw the skis away at the end? I used Elan Ripstick 106, a freeride model which didn't break as much as you might expect. However, they are completely worn out now, there is no longer the base, only the wood remains. As boots I used Fischer Ranger 130. On the other hand, in terms of clothing, I tested several Mammut products, such as the La Liste Pro HS jacket, with which I felt very comfortable and despite some falls on the lapilli resisted well!
Despite the difficulties, you managed to ski on a terrain that was not at all simple. How is it to ski and cornering on these lapilli? Did you expect it to be simpler? No, absolutely no! It was terrible! Had I known in advance, I would have built a ski ideal for these conditions, perhaps with Teflon or in any case with a material that would have help me sliding on the snow. With normal skis, once the lower part was worn

This winter many people have discovered alpine skiing, do you think it will be a passing trend? Actually I prefer ski resorts, because they allow you to ski for much longer time than skins. In my opinion, the lockdown has undoubtedly stimulated people to discover a new sport and to approach outdoor activities in a different way, but we still need to work a lot on awareness of the dangers that may exist. In fact, if you look at statistics, you can see that there have been many more injuries this year in the areas where the resorts have remained closed than where they were open. In my opinion, however, people who started alpine skiing this year will continue to practice it next year, perhaps alternating it with classic skiing.
You’ve shown us that you can ski even in unlikely places and that sometimes “where” is more important than “how”. What do you think and what importance do you give to the journey? The journey is definitely more important than the destination. You can travel even half an hour from home, you don't have to go to the other side of the world. For example, starting on foot from your garden and walking for two days can certainly give us an experience that is perhaps more rewarding than taking a flight. The way you travel changes everything. Future projects? Are you planning to ski in even more unusual places? I am planning a trip to Mongolia, I am still collecting info and if borders will reopen there will certainly be a lot to explore! Near my house there are many descents that I would like to do both on Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa, but the real dream would be skiing on the Matterhorn.
What did you like about Sicily and its population? Hospitality. We actually had some difficulties due to the pandemic, for example in finding places where to eat, but we also met some wonderful people, such as the Guides and volcanologists who helped and supported us and the ladies who hosted us.
In my opinion, the lockdown has undoubtedly stimulated people to discover a new sport and to approach outdoor activities in a different way, but we still need to work a lot on awareness of the dangers that may exist.

It’s the beginning of 2020 and two expert mountaineers, Simone Moro and Tamara Lunger, find themselves on a bare glacier torn by huge crevasses at the foot of the Karakorum Chain. The goal is to reach the summit of Gasherbrum I and II in an alpine style and in the middle of the winter season. Gasherbrum Glacier
In 2011 it wasn’t like this, the glacier has been devastated! These are the effects of Global Warming…
If we make it through every crevasse we’ll soon be on the summit plateau, reaching the top from there will be easier.
138
With this ladder on my shoulders I’m feeling more like a painter than a mountaineer.
And with these flags to mark crevasses you look like Little Thumb, bro!
January 18th, 2020 5500 meters
Here’s the last big crevasse.
Come on! Come on! We’re almost out of this labyrinth of crevasses.
Oh Tami, what a relief! We’ve finally reached the plateau. But we have to be careful: there are huge crevasses here too!
Come on! Let’s cross!
139
I’m going first!
Are you okay Tami?
I’m not following in your footsteps. I’m walking a little more on the left that seems bett…
While Simone is thinking, Tamara is carrying out the all safety maneuvers and …
140
141
Despite the fall and the trapped hand, Tamara keeps a cold head to, first of all, set up a "dead body".
SIMOOOOO! Can you hear me?! My hand is slipping! If you’re safe cut the rope!
Meanwhile, in the crevasse, information isn’t that clear.
... Cut the rope!!
I’m not fuc@#%* cutting the rope! Please Simo, do something! I’m getting closer to the edge!
I’m placing an ice screw, in the meantime try to secure me!
142
Hang on Tami! I’m about to unload my weight…
OH! I’m finally free! Ouch!
14 3
Here I am Simo! I’ll secure you the best way I can and we’ll get out of here together! Hold on!
Ok! Ok! Belay safely please!
Fuck! The rope is too short. I have to untie myself if I want to save him. Meanwhile let’s better this “dead body”.
Please ice, don't give in or it’s the end! Please hold on!
14 4
… Did you manage to secure me?
It’s all set, you can climb! I’ll try to help you the best I can…
Is the belay safe?
Yes Simo! Trust me, you can climb!
So, to get out of here I will need to put my crampons on and take both ice axes. It’s an overhanging climb, it won’t be easy…
14 5
Simone starts the difficult climb
Ok, let’s go!
Come on Simo! Come on! You’re almost out. Take my hand!
Two hours after the fall
146
I was afraid of losing my hand, But I would have never left you behind, bro.
You did great! You passed with flying records the “glacier travel and crevasse rescue” mountaineering course.
Come on, let’s go now: we have to go back to the base camp before it gets dark.
I’m proud of you Tami. A lot…

“You will end up finding your way if you first have the courage to get lost”-Tiziano Terzani How many of us have experienced the sense of suffocation that can give a safe but predictable existence. In such a situation, where everything seems immutable, it is impossible to evolve. And it's not just a question of change. Those who try nothing new have no perspective. Those who have never experienced anything outside their small square of life are missing rationality, confident that the place they live is the best in the world. Which then maybe could really be, but without a comparison they can only delude themselves that it is so. Nobody should give up like this. Getting lost is scary. Since childhood older people encourage us to have precise points of reference, to stay away from what we do not know. And this is how we grow up, attached to our securities, terrified of the unknown,

the different and the alternative. After all, what does it mean to get lost? Take risks, get involved, swim against the tide, explore new possibilities and horizons. But above all to learn to deeply know ourselves. You can't judge your courage and worth if you don't test yourself. Those who never want to take risks must, inevitably, be satisfied with what they have.
