I’m not going to lie, I love the winter. I itch for crisp mornings and bright winter sunshine during the sweltering Australian summers and when the white stuff starts to fall in the Snowy Mountains, I immediately start preparing for a long-awaited snowboarding trip.

But I have to admit, three months of the cold is all I need. I’ve survived the obligatory flu, filled my hot-water bottle nearly 100 times and spent 12 weeks leaving for, and arriving home from, work in the dark, which is more than enough. So now I’m itching for spring, and that’s reflected in these pages.

Our annual Fetes and Fairs issue is packed with fun projects that are quick to make and great to sell at market stalls as well as plenty of bright floral designs that are perfect for springtime.

Materials • 25cm (¼yd) pale lemon homespun for the body • Fat quarter of Japanese floral print • Fat quarter of red homespun • Fat eighth of lightweight iron-on interfacing • 1m (11/8yd) of 12mm- (½in)-wide red bias tape • Ball of black 8-ply wool • White Gelliroll medium marking pen • Black Pigma Micron 01 marking pen • Prismacolour pencils: PC 925 Crimson Lake, PC 938 White, PC 937 Tuscan Red, PC 1012 Jasmine • Two small red ribbon flowers • Seven small wooden cocktail sticks • Sharp 2B pencil • Scrap of thin red ribbon • Scrap of black hat elastic • 9cm x 16cm (3½in x 6½in) rectangle of oriental print washi paper for the fan

CUTTING From the pale lemon homespun, cut: – one 20in x 10in rectangle for the legs and arms – one 4in x 8in rectangle for the head and neck.

Note: It is recommended fabrics be 100 per cent cotton, pre-washed and well ironed. Requirements are based on fabric 112cm (44in) wide. This doll is constructed using the trace, stitch and cut method. Templates are finished size and require a ¼in seam allowance to be added when cutting the fabrics. Read the instructions thoroughly before you begin.

From the red homespun, cut: – two 8in squares for the body and the skirt – two 6½in x 2 ¼in rectangles for the kimono sleeves.

From the Japanese floral print, cut: – two 20in x 3½in rectangles for the kimono – two 6½in x 2 ¼in rectangles for the kimono sleeves – two 2 ¼in x 9½in strips for the Obi belt.

PREPARATION Trace the pattern pieces for the body, arms and legs, including all markings, from the pattern sheet onto template plastic with a pencil, and cut them out neatly on the lines.

ARMS AND LEGS Fold the 20in x 10in pale lemon homespun rectangle in half with right sides together and press it well. Trace two arms and two legs onto the folded rectangle using the prepared templates and a pencil.

Pin the two layers together around each traced shape and stitch on the lines with a short stitch length, leaving the marked opening for turning. Trim a scant ¼in seam allowance beyond each shape and snip the curves.

Turn through each arm and leg, and smooth out the curves by running a turning tool along the stitched edges.

Then press them well and set them aside.

STITCHES USED Backstitch, colonial knot, lazy daisy stitch, running stitch, straight stitch PREPARATION Trace the shapes from the pattern sheet onto the baking paper with the pencil and cut them out on the lines.

PINK BROOCH • 15cm (6in) square of pink felt • DMC Stranded Embroidery Cotton: 1 skein each of light beaver grey (648), baby pink (818) • DMC Light Effects Thread: 1 skein of silver (E168) • 10mm (3/8in) round shank button: 1 pearlescent • 2mm (1/16in) round pearl beads: 8 pink • 3cm (1¼in) metal brooch back • 15cm (6in) square of fusible polymesh (optional) • 12cm (4¾in) diameter embroidery hoop (optional) GENERAL • Baking paper • Pencil and sticky tape • Small sharp scissors • General sewing supplies

Note Taetia used a square of fusible polymesh, which is trimmed away when the embroidery is almost finished, and a hoop. However, these can be embroidered whilst held in your hand.

Use clear sticky tape to stick the pattern pieces onto the felt. Cut around the shapes with small scissors, such as embroidery scissors, as it is easier to cut tiny shapes with a tight turning circle.

Peel the sticky tape off the felt. The felt isn’t damaged by the tape, plus the pattern is held in place while you cut and can be used again.

Needles & TEA What a sweet invitation idea! Jennifer Reynolds designed this little needlebook to invite a friend for a cuppa. Made easily in a day, it combines a lovely gift with a special message of friendship.

Measurements • Finished size: 14cm x 28cm (5½in x 11in) when open.

Materials • Fat quarter of pink/green stripe print • 25cm (10in) square of pink/white spot print • 15cm x 20cm (6in x 8in) rectangle of white hanky linen • 9cm x 10cm (3½in x 4in) rectangle of pink wool felt • 10cm (4in) square of fusible stitchery stabiliser such as

Weaveline or Whisper Weft • 16cm x 30cm (6¼in x 11¾in) rectangle of thin fusible Pellon • DMC stranded embroidery threads: Hot Pink (3607); Pink (3609); Green (704) • 10cm (4in) length of green baby ricrac • 7.6cm (3in) square of fusible webbing such as Vliesofix • Size 9 embroidery needle • Cotton threads for machine-sewing: white, pink, green • HB pencil • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat

CUTTING From the white hanky linen, cut: - one 4in x 5¼in rectangle - one 4in square.

From the pink/white spot print, cut: - one 4in square - two 1½in x 6¼in strips. Set the rest aside for the appliqué.

From the pink/green stripe print, cut: - two 1in x 4in strips - one 6¼in x 11½in rectangle - one 6in x 6¼in rectangle - two 1½in x 12in strips.

PREPARATION Lightly trace the cover stitchery design onto the 4in x 5¼in rectangle of linen with a sharp pencil, matching the vertical centres. Then trace the pocket stitchery design and the pocket template onto the centre of the 4in square of linen.

Trace the tree trunk and teacup appliqué templates onto the smooth side of the 3in square of Vliesofix, leaving ¼in between them. Fuse the shapes to

the wrong side of a scrap of pink/white spot print then cut them out carefully on the lines. Peel off the backing paper and fuse the shapes onto the stitchery

backgrounds with a warm, dry iron, ensuring the shapes cover the pencil lines.
