EDITOR'S LETTER

Welcome

Editor’s Pick

Linda Hollander’s modern take on hanging baubles inspired me to dig into my bead stash to decorate my own tree !

Well, 2014 is certainly moving quickly and the well-loved merry season is almost upon us once more. Pretty soon the shopping centres will be sparkling with tinsel and baubles and you’ll be resisting the temptation of – or indulging in – candy canes and festive treats. While there are undoubtedly a few things about Christmas that I definitely cringe at – namely the urge to spend money on impractical gifts and hearing incessant carols everywhere I go – it remains my favourite occasion to craft for. It starts early; I catch the sales on Christmas supplies as early as Boxing Day and hoard my cute and pretty fabrics and trims for three quarters of the following year. I love that there’s no end to Christmas crafting and you can create as much or as little and make your decorating as understated or extravagant as you like. And it doesn’t stop at decorations; you can make practical items like trivets, tablecloths and clothing and then there are gifts to consider! Last year I handmade almost every gift I gave – it was exhausting! This year I’m starting earlier, I’ve had a whole year to brainstorm ideas and am very excited to put them all into motion. My first Christmas issue as editor of Handmade is a collection of bright projects, with modern designs and colours – I’m sure the unique ideas within these pages will inspire you. I hope you enjoy all your Christmas making this year, and don’t forget to join us on Facebook to share in more of the fun.

PROJECT

Starlight Fussy-cutting is an effective way of letting a fabric be the star of a patchwork design. Jennifer Reynolds wanted the simple 16 Patch block to be as impressive as her stitcheries, so she fussy-cut perfect motifs to fit into 2in squares.

Measurements Finished size: 27cm x 81.5cm (10½in x 32in)

Materials • 60cm (2⁄3yd) red tone-on-tone print for the border, appliqué, backing and binding • 20cm (¼yd) red/green geometric print for the fussy-cut 16 Patch block, appliqué and side borders – only a fat eighth is needed if you’re not fussy-cutting • Fat quarter of cream tone-on-tone Christmas print • DMC Stranded Embroidery Cottons: Green (989) • Anchor Stranded Embroidery Thread: Red (19) • 25.5cm (10in) square of fusible webbing • 30.5cm x 81.5cm (12in x 32in) rectangle of low-loft fusible batting

• Neutral-coloured thread for machine-piecing • Quilting threads: cream, green, red • Size 9 embroidery needle • Quilt-basting spray • Two 25.5cm (10in) squares of lightweight fusible woven interfacing • Water-erasable Frixion pen • Pencil • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat • General sewing supplies

Note: It is recommended all fabrics be 100 per cent cotton, pre-washed and well ironed. Requirements are based on fabric 112cm (44in) wide. The ¼in seam allowance used throughout is included in the cutting measurements. Please read through the instructions before you begin.

STITCHES USED Backstitch, chain stitch, stem stitch CUTTING From the red tone-on-tone print, cut: – one 12in strip and crosscut one 12in x 33in backing rectangle. From the remainder of the strip, crosscut two 2in x 10in strips for the scallop borders – two 1½in strips and trim each one to 1½in x 43in for the outer borders – three 2½in binding strips. From the red/green geometric print, fussy-cut: – eight 2½in squares for the 16 Patch block – two 5in x 8½in rectangles for the side borders. Set aside the remaining fabric 20

for the vase and stars appliqué. From the cream tone-on-tone Christmas print, cut – – eight 2½in squares for the 16 Patch block – two 10in squares for the feature stitchery blocks. PREPARATION Centre a 10in cream tone-on-tone print square right side up over the tree pattern on the pattern sheet and very lightly trace the design onto the fabric square using a sharp pencil. Transfer the star patterns onto the other 10in square in the same way, using the photograph as a guide to placement.

1

Trace the appliqué tree trunk once, the appliqué star centre five times and the scallop border shape twice onto the smooth side of the fusible webbing , leaving ½in between them. Cut the shapes out roughly ¼in beyond the lines.

2

Position the scalloped border shapes rough side down on the wrong side of the 2in x 10in red tone-on-tone print strips and fuse them in place. Cut them out neatly on the lines and set them aside.

3

Carefully position the star centres and tree trunk shapes on the wrong side of the red/green geometric print, ensuring the shape is centred on the section of the print that you wish to feature. Cut the shapes out neatly on the lines, then peel off the backing paper, position them over the traced designs and fuse them in place.

4

Fuse the lightweight fusible woven interfacing to the wrong side of the stitchery blocks.

Paint the lead, the tops of each light and the narrow stripes on the candy cane with Chromium Green Oxide and paint the voids in Mars Black.Trace the detail of the pattern back on.

TRANSFERRING THE DESIGN Trace the design from the pattern sheet onto tracing paper and transfer the basic outlines, without the lights and detail, using the transfer paper and stylus.

Side-load the ¼in angle shader with Mars Violet and apply the shading to Santa’s suit, see photograph. Paint the first highlight on the suit using the No 8 smushing brush and Matisse Red Light, then smush the final highlight with Permanent Orange.

1 2

4

Complete all blocking-in with the filbert brush except the smaller areas which you do with the round brush. Use the smushing brush dry and apply the paint to the cut-out using a circular, rubbing motion.

88

5 6

Mix a pale pink colour with Skin Tone Light and Titanium White and use the No 4 smushing brush to highlight the centre of the face, then shade under his hairline, under the eyebrows, down the right side of his face, above the moustache and down the left side of his nose with the 1/8in angle shader and Mars Violet.

7

Paint the eyes in Mars Black with the fine liner brush, then add tiny Titanium white highlight dots. Float a Titanium White highlight on the nose and cheeks with the 1/8in angle shader.

8

Apply Naphthol Crimson to the cheeks by dry-brushing it with the No 4 smushing brush.

9

Stipple the fur and hair with the deerfoot brush and Antique White – leave a little of the grey basecoat showing through. Use the mini liner and Antique White to stroke-in the hair and the beard, then use Titanium White to stipple the fur areas. Load the same colour onto the fine liner brush and paint highlights on the beard and hair.
