3D DESIGN PRINCIPLES BAID Designing an interactive public installation Friday 12 January 2018, at 1600

TASK DETAILS AND INSTRUCTIONS

• design an enclosed installation to sit in any public square in any city centre to intrigue and amuse the public. Your design should encourage visitors to experience both positive emotion and negative emotion in some way. • Your design must be informed by photos you’ve taken of the urban environment, taken either in Manchester City Centre or at Media City: either or, not both! • Use sketches, sketch models, debate & discussion to develop an appropriate design. • At the end of the module you will have completed 3 tasks:

TASK 1: A1 PHOTO RESEARCH BOARD: • Your photos could be of spaces, buildings, surfaces & textures you feel are representative of the urban environment in some way and which could also be categorised under 2 general headings: Positive and Negative. • This should be an entirely personal interpretation. •

Select the best, most descriptive 12 (only) photos

• Consider mood, colour, form, texture and scale. • Arrange the photos on an A1 sized sheet. Photos must be thoughtfully arranged and presented with care. • Do not include text other than a title block in the bottom right corner. Arrange the photos so it is very clear which you consider positive and which you consider negative.

TASK 2: DESIGN AND BUILD A MODEL TO REPRESENT YOUR DESIGN • This model will represent what your design would be like if it were built. Represent scale by inserting an appropriately sized model person. • Be imaginative and experimental. • Consider how positive and negative spaces could or should be linked • Do not turn spaces into restaurants, living rooms or galleries.

TASK 3: A1 PHOTO MOOD BOARD

• Containing photos of your model to help represent the experience visitors to your installation would have: what they would see and feel as they engage. • You are permitted to use exactly 12 photos. Do not include text other than in a title block in the bottom right corner
