Context Leeds College of Art is a special place to study. The creative atmosphere in the college is something that sets it apart from the rest, as well as it’s impressive range of courses and well known alumni. However, there is nothing in the college to commemorate this. One area of the building where all students pass through at some time through their day, and contains blank walls is the Mosaic café.
Brief or Tasks Leeds College of Art is a well known creative institution which has been established since 1846 it has a reputation as a leading arts college and has many well known alumni. The college has recently had a re-brand, yet this celebration of Leeds College of Art isn’t as obvious in the building itself. We will create a piece of artwork/chalk board design that will celebrate all aspects of the college, it’s history, it’s courses, it’s alumni as well as creating a hub where all courses can share important information about upcoming events. The medium of chalk means that the design can be altered easily and can be a fluid piece of design changing regularly if needed. The design will be visually exciting and engaging to all members of the college and will be created in the view to be sustained over the year. The tasks regarding the design will all be shared equally and the actual creation of the board will also be an equal collaboration as we all have an interest in hand drawn design.
Preparation/Research suggestions As this is a collaborative brief, Greta, Suzanne and myself will undertake research into the college itself. The institutions history, it’s range of courses, the alumni of the college and also some of the important news about upcoming events happening in the college. In order to place our project in a public area of the college we will have to contact the necessary faculty members and administration to get permission. This will involve a short presentation pitch about what we would like to produce. This will involve looking at a range of different chalkboard drawing methods, the best equipment, the board generation and the possible visual styles we could be inspired by.
Evidence – for this project students should submit The physical chalkboard installation in the college, photographed and the process documented in the form of a stop film animation. As well as the actual piece itself there will be supporting evidence in the form of a research book and the responses of those around the college.
