Context Trends are a constant source of debate within the design world. They have become taboo carrying negative connotations of a ‘copy cat’ nature and blind imitation that lack creativity. Present, hand craft has seen a revival with may trend forecasters stating that hand made is a current trend. Most commonly is the letterpress aesthetic, seemingly ‘random’ placed letters, imperfectly printed with a mismatched style, a total contrast to the work of the original letterpress printers. Brief or Tasks Create a practical project that forms a synthesis between the research undertaken as part of the essay component of cop3 and brings together the arguments documented in a visual piece. The project should show an understanding of the topic surrounding the question ‘Should the resurgence in the popularity of hand crafted design be seen as a trend or something more permanent? Using letterpress demonstrate through documented action reaction your personal experiences of the process, as well as producing a range of visuals focussing on opinions given by design studios and individuals surrounding the topic. Put into practice research learnt about the visual styles of letterpress, both the traditional style , with a focus on process and the newer, more aesthetically orientated style. This will be supported by constant evaluation of the process.
Preparation/Research suggestions Thorough research into the question of crafts ‘trend’ status and the reasons for this as this understanding will help form the ‘desirable’ visuals that have been deemed ‘trendy’. Undertake research into the history of letterpress, the more traditional styles, and the rules accompanying a letterpress printer as well as the more contemporary letterpress styles.
Evidence – for this project students should submit A minimum of 4 letterpress posters Evidence of experimentation, development and personal opinions towards the experience of participating in the letterpress process
