Context Philosophy is a complex subject and many of the concepts can be difficult to understand. The book Sophie's world is a popular introduction to the world of philosophy. It was published in 1991 and has won the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in 1994. It was originally written in Norwegian and became a best seller in Norway. The novel was later translated into fifty-three languages, with over thirty million copies in print. The English version of the novel was published in 1995. It is one of the most commercially successful Norwegian novels outside of Norway. The book has since been adapted into a film and a PC game. Although this has attempted to simplify the ideas of philosophers the subject is still one that seems daunting and limited to those in academia.
Brief or Tasks Selecting a philosopher we will thoroughly research their ideas and history then communicate this information in an appropriate visual way to display to an academic audience with an existing interest in philosophy. There should be a strong emphasis on typography supported by the use of accompanying visual material and sound, with an aim to create a physical installation to be viewed by small groups. We would be looking to make the words of the philosopher come alive through the use of animation. We way to create an experience that both informs and provokes reflection in the audience with the use of light, darkness, sound and projection. Time allocated: 3 weeks
Preparation/Research suggestions In depth and thorough research into our chosen philosopher will form the basis of the whole project, we will each be assigned a particular area to research into, the history of the philosopher themselves, their ideas, controversy, in order to gain a fully formed body of research. As my role in the group is the typography I will need to look at visual styles that would be appropriate visually. Lastly, research into existing animations will have to be undertaken to understand how our own animation could possibly take form.
Evidence – for this project students should submit The installation animation itself and also an edited recording of the experience for use and promotion online.
