Context Secret 7” is an annual event that combines music and art for a good cause. They take 7 tracks from 7 of the best-known musicians around and press each one 100 times to 7" vinyl. They then invite creatives from around the world to interpret the tracks in their own style, resulting in a one-of-a-kind sleeve for every 7”. The creatives are made up of famous names through to gems we unearth through artwork submitted to the secret 7” website. The winning 700 sleeves will be exhibited Downstairs At Mother in London on 12 & 13th April, then on Record Store Day the sleeves will be available for purchase for £45 a piece, the proceeds of which will all go to the charity War Child. There will be no name of who has created the sleeve, or even which song it’s for, hence the ‘secret’ 7”.
Brief or Tasks Secret 7” requires the designer to create a design for a record sleeve working with the 182 mm x 182 mm dimensions, with a 3mm bleed. There are no requirements in terms of visual style except that the design must not include the artists name or he song title. In the exhibition the designs will be acing forward so the brief only requires the front of the sleeve to be designed, the reverse is unnecessary. The file must be produced in CMYK to allow for easy printing, and be 300 dpi saved in an appropriate format. The song chosen is for Massive Attack’s Karmacoma. Their 1995 single release as part of their second album protection. Time allocated: 4 days Deadline 17th February
Preparation/Research suggestions Research into the visual styles currently adopted by the artist in question, Massive Attack. As well as this research, both primary and secondary will need to be undertaken in order to fully understand the concepts behind the song and it’s meanings. This is particularly important in the secret 7” brief as neither the band name or the song title can be used. General research into successful record sleeve design would also be beneficial.
Evidence – for this project students should submit The record sleeve itself as well as accompanying material in the form of a poster.
