By Jasmine Nguyen- James Bowie High School Division 39 S A chance to give back to the community, work with creative minds, and be productive— naturally, Key Club was an extremely rewarding experience for me. As a person who many consider to be unsociable, taciturn, and awkward, I was scared to collaborate with strangers or people I was only acquaintances with. Surprisingly, everyone was friendly and did not treat me like an outsider. Gradually, I became comfortable with them and even looked forward to staying afterschool for homecoming preparation. It has only been about two weeks since the club started the prep, so I know that the bonds I already feel will become even tighter. I had always wondered who decorated our school. Who made these amazing paintings that were hung up during events and holidays. Who made the lives of students brighter by transforming the dull hallways into something wonderfully colorful. The mystery of “who” was solved after joining Key Club. To participate directly in the making of these posters was a treat. People would see and appreciate our hard work, just like how I silently appreciated them in the past. However, I can now connect my gratitude to faces, to my group mates and the other members. It felt great to encourage others along with being encouraged. As for the process of cooperating itself, it was welcoming. It was nice to not be pressured into drawing perfectly. Whenever I made a mistake, such as painting outside the lines, no one got mad at me. Perhaps I was worried because of the many group projects I was in that resulted in passive-aggression and a tense atmosphere. I braced myself for some sighs of frustration, but was met with laughs and kind words. That really made me relax and unstiffen. Suddenly, I realized that the others might have the same fears as I did. I made sure that they did not feel bad for slipping up as well, and I hope that I helped them through my actions. I beat myself up a lot, especially feeling ashamed because I felt like I was not doing enough. It was not good for my emotional health to keep feeling this way, but I was unsure what I could do to feel more productive. Key Club has helped me feel like I was useful and doing something worthwhile with my time. Even though all we are doing are posters so far, I know that there will be many more volunteer opportunities to experience and learn from.
