It conceals small tavernas with rembetiko music, a popular Greek genre with lyrics that speak of love, heartbreak, passion, where the sound of the bouzouki dominates, and is very dear to us Greeks and well-known to the visitors of Greece. Piraeus also has a strong naval history. As you look at the imposing Greek ship-museum “G. Averof ” in the waters of the Hellenic Maritime Heritage Park and walk through its vibrant majestic interiors, you can feel the breath of history embracing you, travelling you to a heroic past. Leaving Piraeus, we will take you to the vineyards of Santorini, where its volcanic soil gives a distinctive flavour to all its products. he building, a characteristic landmark in the Omonia vicinity of the Athenian centre designed by the renowned architect Ernst Ziller, is in itself an occasion for a diving visit into the ‘spirit’ of Athenian classicism. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday however, the performances have supertitles in English, for city visitors to enjoy. Presented at the National Theatre stage for the first time is the iconic drama “A view from the Bridge”, by Arthur Miller. The devastating passion and the world of Eddie Carbone, an Italian immigrant in Brooklyn during the 50s, are brought to life by a theatrical company of established and up-and-coming Greek actors. very year, dance productions are among the strong cards at the international summer Athens Festival. So what should we expect to see in June at the former industrial complex of Peiraios 260? June starts off with the acclaimed Arkadi Zaides, who explores with Talos the relation between movement, new surveillance technologies and the future of borders. In mid-June, Bruno Beltrão, awarded with the Bessie Award, and his dance group Grupo de Rua, tackle the notions of conciliation, conflict, coexistence and collectivity with the project titled “Inoah”. THIS YEAR, THE FESTIVAL CURTAIN rises with “The Acharnians” at the imposing ancient theatre of Epidaurus, just two hours from Athens. In a world torn by wars, this comedy written by Aristophanes at the age of 19, and first performed in 425 BC during the sixth year of the Peloponnesian War, still remains topical. The project is undertaken by the experienced Greek director Kostas Tsianos, who notes that: “Our performance draws on popular tradition, echoing the Dionysian spirit so prominent in Aristophanes’ The Acharnians”. For years now, he has been a key figure at the entrance of the most prestigious hotel in Athens. Dressed in his emblematic uniform, he welcomes the distinguished guests with exceptional courtesy and charming social skills. He reveals exclusively to us the etiquette secrets of making a first impression, confirming that the true elegance of this hotel begins at its gates.

by Dimitris Taktikos, the longest-serving doorman of the luxurious Athenian hotel, who talks for the first time in his 30-year career: The guest will first of all look for a smile, then some helpful information that we can provide, and ultimately, a high level of service. I stand here on duty for many hours every day, always with a smile. My biggest reward is seeing returning visitors to Greece who remember me, and who once again choose to stay at the Grande Bretagne hotel. With a warm greeting, I say to them “Welcome back”, so they feel they have returned to a familiar place, just like home. This is the true definition of hospitality; feeling at home, says Dimitris Taktikos.

There is always a “fine line” with guests that I never cross. I may

come close, but never step over it. That is the rule, and my 33-year experience as a doorman has taught me where this fine line is. I always look at our guest in the eyes, and not at their pocket, like someone might assume. After all, they are our guests and I will welcome them like I welcome my friends at home. What I provide to human interaction at the entrance of the Grande Bretagne hotel, I feel is then returned to the fullest. In other words, I give 100 and get 120! The distinction between people of affluence is found in the details. In the end, the origin and extent of personal wealth determines their conduct. Naturally, there will always be outstanding guests whom you love having as guests... I’m cautious when it comes to suggestions in the city. I will not recommend a restaurant, if there is no quality guarantee, or suggest a walk in Omonia. When I recommend to guests where to go for a meal, I want them to return with a smile. These are suggestions that I call “We’ll still be friends-suggestions”. I want us both to have a smile. I have welcomed famous guests who were genuine star material: Elizabeth Taylor was such a star. Bill Clinton could easily be a star instead of a politician. Amal Clooney Alamuddin, though very simple, is a star. Sophia Lauren – whom I met at an older age – was stunning. Dazzling, both in appearance as well as in personality. Catherine Deneuve was magnificent, as was Alain Delon. Sean Connery and Roger Moore were true stars. However, Gérard Depardieu immediately stood out with his friendliness and demonstrativeness. The same goes for Diego Maradona who was extremely friendly.

I have also come across politicians who were very glamorous, such as François

Mitterrand, Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, and others like Yasser Arafat who was accompanied by draconian security. Konstantinos Karamanlis, Andreas Papandreou and Konstantinos Mitsotakis, from the socalled “old guard”, were also very affable and would greet everyone with a genuine interest and would stop for a chat. I am here to welcome our guests, to facilitate and to provide solutions to any desire, problem or demand. From accompanying a guest personally from the nearby street of Voukourestiou back to our hotel and making sure they are safe in the event of a demonstration in the city centre, to helping an elderly, or disabled person when in need of assistance. My job is not the easiest of jobs. I stand for long hours at the entrance, where anything can happen; an accident, or even a burst of tear gas during a demonstration. One is exposed being on the street... I may have been soaked in torrential rain, or stood under the scalding sun of the capital in my uniform, but I do not complain. Our guests care about us. They ask if I’m warm enough, if I’m cold, if I mind being soaked. Whatever the case, I don’t let weather ruin my mood. You are in demand if you become the best. Before complaining and grumbling,

an an old ship have a soul? Can its luxurious lounges have a memory that whisperingly recall the debates which lead to historic decisions? The officers and crew who take care of the “G. Averof ” believe that this is true of their ship. When you look at it, calm and imposing in the waters of the Hellenic Maritime Heritage Park, and walk through its vibrant majestic interiors, you can feel the breath of history embracing you, travelling you to a heroic past.

An eternal symbol of freedom

The 1909 Batlleship “Georgios Averof ” was based on an innovative design, but at an unbearable cost. With the bequest of national benefactor Georgios Averof, the authorities, rightly so, decided to name the ship after him, at the service of the Greek state. In September 1912, while much of Greece is still under Turkish rule, the nation allied with other Balkan countries and declared war on the Ottoman Empire. On 26th October, the Greek army occupied Thessaloniki. The Turkish fleet prepared to exit via the Straits of Hellespont (Dardanelles), in order to move fresh troops to the front. The Greek fleet with the flagship “G. Averof ” took action, and after liberating the islands of North East Aegean, confronted the Turkish fleet near Cape Elli. It stood out thanks to its speed, manoeuverability, mechanical superiority and with Pavlos Kountouriotis on its bridge, a descendant of a glorious Hydra naval family during the 1821 revolution. During the most critical phase of the December 1912 naval battle, Kountouriotis hoisted the flag signal with the letter “Z”, meaning independent action. The “G. Averof ” sailed forward alone at full speed against the entire enemy fleet. Employing smart manoeuvers and accurate gun fire, it inflicted severe damage and overwhelming blows forcing the Turkish warships to seek refuge in the narrow straits of the Hellespont.

second attempt by the Turkish fleet on the 5th January 1913, lead to their new defeat near Lemnos. They retreated, and the First Balkan War which led to the doubling of Greece’s size, was decisively determined. The naval battles of Elli and Lemnos became the golden pages in the lifetime album of “G. Averof ”. Still, they are not the only ones, since it has been active in almost all the great 20th century events. A memorable symbolic moment came in 1918, when it anchored out of Constantinople with the victorious Allied fleet of World War I. In the following years, it was always in the front line of the nation’s defense. Generations of sailor crews boarded this ship and affectionately called it “Barba Giorgos” (Uncle George), emphasizing its proverbial luck, thanks to which it never suffered significant damage. In the outbreak of World War II, “G. Averof ” was once again in the forefront. It served in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, and in 1944 it returned victorious under the commanding of Theodoros Kountouriotis, son of the legendary old admiral. Now disarmed, it awaited the end. However, it stood lucky once again thanks to its restoration, and in 1984 it was converted into a museum. Restorations were done with devotion and care, and its elaborate original objects were accumulated. Today, “Barba Giorgos” welcomes us still very much alive and cheerful in all its majesty. An immortal symbol of Greek maritime tradition, as well as a symbol of longing for all the people of the earth for dignity and freedom.

he life of the Battleship “Georgios Averof ” began in 1909, at the Orlando shipyard in Livorno, Italy. The launching took place in March 1910, and a few months later, the “G. Averof ” makes its first great journey. It will head to Portsmouth in England, to attend the coronation of the British King and equip with ammunition. From there, it will then return to Greek waters at the nation’s service and begin its legendary journey to glory.

his year marks its 250th birthday. It is not often you reach 250 years of age! As a result, the Royal Academy of Arts in London celebrates its anniversary accordingly. Having been remodeled by Sir David Chipperfield, with an extra 70% space added, it offers new free displays of art and architecture, site-specific installations by the Royal Academicians and a new online access platform to its treasures. The transformed campus opens in May, and along with it, the new exhibition venues at the Burlington Gardens, with the exhibition Tacita Dean: LANDSCAPE, as part of a unique tribute to the British artist in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery in London. Rodin and the Parthenon Sculptures 罗丹与帕特农神庙 WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION for the famous 19th and 20th century French sculptor when he created his iconic piece “The Kiss” in 1882? Surely admiring Aphrodite laying in the arms of her mother Dioni, just as it was sculpted by the hand of Phidias for the Parthenon’s east pediment. Being a regular visitor at the British Museum (“In my spare time I just haunt it”, he said), Rodin often sought inspiration in its halls. The exhibition “Rodin and the art of ancient Greece”, comes to showcase the artist’s love for the art of ancient Greece by presenting more than 80 sculptures and some of his sketches in a dialogue with the sculpture masterpieces of the Parthenon, that will be transported to the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery especially for the THE exhibition. However, the new kid on the block bears the name Lafayette Anticipations, that recently opened in Marais and is housed in a 19th century industrial building renovated by Rem Koolhaas and his OMA firm, an initiative of the Galleries Lafayette. The purpose? To act as an incubator for innovation and research by supporting and presenting artists from the fields of contemporary art, design and fashion. A LITTLE SILK is enough to unite a small town in Greece with one of the oldest cities in China. Soufli is linked to Hangzhou thanks to a precious textile fiber that appeared thousands of years ago in China and spread across the Asian continent to the Mediterranean, through the ancient trade network known as the Silk Road. Two museums that highlight silk culture in Greece and China, at Soufli and Hangzhou, closely collaborate for the first time to demonstrate the strength of this fine material. The small, but distinct Silk Museum of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation and the impressive China National Silk Museum, have signed a Cooperation Agreement laying the foundations for a broader cultural partnership to promote the culture of silk through cultural exchanges, joined exhibitions and the implementation of research and educational programmes. This collaboration is closely linked to China's “One Belt, one Road” initiative, including events, initiatives and transnational synergies along the Silk Road. Within the European Year of Cultural Heritage, the two museums are ready to embrace local communities, such as Soufli, an integral part of the silkgrowing heritage. hen Greek producers began to discover their land’s wealth from the outset, they turned to regions known from antiquity for their wines: the first was Santorini. Its vineyards extend throughout the island, especially in the areas of Pyrgos and Akrotiri. They are ancient vineyards protected by Unesco, among the few places worldwide not infested by phylloxera that follow the same traditional practices for thousands of years. The vineyards have an amazing rounded shape that protects them from the Aegean winds. Wine varieties for which Santorini is known: – The Assyrtiko, a white grape variety that stands out thanks to the volcanic soil for its metallicity and minerality of flavour. The Assyrtiko can produce sparkling wines, as well as aged wines. – Also made from the Assyrtiko is the sweet dessert wine Vinsanto with an intense molasses-like flavour. – The Mavrotragano, the red variety with its dark and crisp grapes that producers have been developing in recent years. one experiences in Piraeus is in fact, aural: A blend of whistling ships, clanking sea anchors, honking cars, hollering vendors, quarreling, teasing, laughing, music, farewells... There is no doubt that Piraeus is a boisterous city lively pulsating with energy. It is also a city with exciting contradictions: Unruly, but quaint. Modern, but with a reverence for the past. Extroverted, and yet, full of secrets. Economically dynamic, but with a soul of genuine folk. Although it is a stone’s throw away from the centre of Athens, it still retains its character; one that is unpretentious, uncompromising and uniquely charming.

The glory of the “wooden walls”

The fate of Piraeus has always gone hand in hand with that of Athens. It was the main communication portal for Athens and the principal source of its power. During classical antiquity, in the years of great prosperity, it was full of elegant buildings, magnificent temples and impressive fortifications. The most famous were the “Long Walls”, an impenetrable 7-kilometre fortified passage that connected Piraeus to Athens. The three harbours Munichia, Zea and Kantharos, accommodated merchant vessels that ensured the economic prosperity of the Athenian democracy. They also served the mighty Athenian war fleet which dominated the Mediterranean sea. These “wooden walls”, as the oracle of Delphi characterised the Athenian ships, triumphed in countless naval battles, the most famous being against the Persians at nearby Salamina in 480 BC. Then came the decline. During the Middle Ages, and after several sieges and raids, Piraeus’ magnificent monuments had fallen, and its name was almost forgotten. Sailors called it Porto Leone, because of the marble lion that stood at the entrance of Kantharos, the largest of its three ports. This emblematic sculpture was stolen by the Venetians in the 17th century and since then, it is on display at the entrance of the Venice Arsenal. 84 / ELEGA NT TR AV EL GR EECE

Triremes were the ultimate naval weapon during classical antiquity. They were agile and fast (reaching up to a speed of 10 knots), with three rows of oars and a crew of two hundred men. The 37-metre long Olympias trireme is an exact copy that also sails at sea from time to time. During the beginning of the 19th century, the only inhabitants of Piraeus were the monks of a monastery, and a customs guard who lived in a hut. Reconstruction began in 1834, when Athens became the capital of the newly established state. The pioneering urban planning designed by Kleanthes, Schaubert and Klenze, combined with the transition to steam-powered vessels and industrial progress, transformed the city. Piraeus became one of the busiest ports in Europe. In the mid-20th century, deindustrialization ensued. All these periods left their mark in the fabric of the city. Today, one can find well hidden neoclassical mansions in areas of old industrial buildings, port facilities of the inter-war period opposite modernist buildings, eclectic style public buildings next to vernacular houses, and contemporary apartment blocks embracing ancient ruins. It is an architectural blend, where even dereliction can hide within it a certain poetic beauty.

The Railway Station

It was constructed in the second half of the 1920s, and designed by the architect Ioannis Axelos and partially restored in 2001. This majestic eclectic-style building with its impressive dome serves thousands of passengers every day. The Athens-Piraeus railway line first operated with steam trains in 1869.

The Municipal Theatre

It was completed in 1895, and has since been the centerpiece of the city’s cultural life. The

By the early 20th century, Piraeus had become a refuge for many povertystricken native immigrants from the regions of Mani, Crete and other Greek islands, and coexistence was not always harmonious. Even though they lived in different neighbourhoods, there were still scuffles between them. In the 1920s, Greek refugees from Asia Minor were also added to this melting pot. Drapetsona, Keratsini and other impoverished Piraeus neighbourhoods were filled with shacks. Gradually, local tensions receded and a common identity and character began to emerge, which was constantly renewed by the new moral conventions brought by sailors from their travels. As a result, the people of Piraeus are characterised by their tenacity, their endurance and sincerity, but also by an optimism with which they deal with daily life. It is not by accident that the word “dobros” (meaning straightforward, honest and pure in one’s intentions), is widely used by locals.

The vernacular neighbourhoods

These are often unruly in their structure, but nonetheless, vibrant and genuine. A long tour of the city’s vernacular neighbourhoods would surely have to start from Drapetsona at the western end of the port, and after passing through the renowned “garidadika” (seafood tavernas) of Haravgi, it would end up in Perama where the road ends at the ferry port for Salamina.

The “legend” of Piraeus

indicate the informal clash between Piraeus and Athens, but also the struggle of the “maounierides” (a derogatory term used in the past to describe the people of Piraeus) to climb the social ladder. A taste of old Piraeus

Time seems to have come to a standstill at the “Eidikon”, a meze taverna and grocery store situated behind the old tobacco factories. It first opened in 1920, and very little has changed since then. The

owner’s manner is so “dobra” that if you are not familiar with the spirit of Piraeus, you might even find it somewhat rude. Rembetiko is a popular urban musical idiom that expresses the passions, woes and joys of the poor people in the most genuine way. A musical genre that was formulated during the third decade of the 20th century, when the musical tradition of the Asia Minor refugees intermingled with the working class culture of the Greek slums. Piraeus was its undisputed capital. Rembetiko was the music of Piraeus’subculture, and as a result it was relentlessly pursued by the authorities during the pre-war years. It later reached greater general acceptance and managed to significantly influence contemporary Greek music. The rembetiko songs speak of love, of great sorrow, of mistakes, of illegality and quite often their lyrics exude a genuine poetic flair. Many of these songs often mention the neighbourhoods of Piraeus.

Just like any large port, Pireaus has always had its promiscuous neighbourhoods where lawlessness and prostitution reigned. In 1875, an enclosed walled area resembling a prison was built at the Vourla neighbourhood of Drapetsona, in order to house all the brothels. It was a bleak place which remained unchanged for over half a century. In later years, it was used as an actual prison. During the late 1940s, the brothels of Piraeus were moved to Troumba, on the east side of the port. This was once an aristocratic district, mainly inhabited by wealthy merchants from the island of Chios. However, it was largely destroyed by the Second World War bombings and abandoned. This ‘void’ was filled with brothels, cabarets, dingy bars, cheap hotels and erotic cinemas.

It was a district that would feed off debauchery and unadulterated pleasure, with the neon lights from all sorts of shops glowing at night. Dangerous and decadent, but still very charming.

Decline and rebirth

Troumba lost its ‘flair’ in 1967, when the dictatorial regime of the time banned the running of brothels. For decades it was a mere shadow of itself, but in recent years it has reformed with an entirely new face. Today, it is filled with stylish restaurants, cafes, bars and has become one of the city’s busiest and liveliest neighbourhoods.

A view of the old Troumba has been preserved in several films. The most famous one being “Never on Sunday” (1960), by Jules Dassin and starring Melina Mercouri, who would later become the Minister of Culture. The film was nominated for five Oscars (winning one for the musical score by Manos Hatzidakis), and Melina Mercouri was honoured with the Best Performance Award at the Cannes festival. Another brilliant film is the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film nominee titled “Red Lanterns” (1963) by Vasilis Georgiadis, which describes the tortured life of five women just before the brothel ban in Troumba. f you need a small tasty boost between your strolls, shopping or sight-seeing, you can easily get something in hand. Your first option is, what else, a souvlaki, which is a definite option at Kostas (Pentelis 5, city centre, 2103228502), with good pies, well cooked and juicy meat, tomato, onions, yoghurt and parsley and... many decades of history. Also, the more recent Feyrouz, that is a quaint family establishment hidden in a small alley, very close to the square of Agia Irini (Karori 23 & Aiolou, 2130318060/Metro: Monastiraki). The lahmajoun and peinirli with a Middle Eastern aroma, all prepared by mama Feyrouz have many devout followers. On the wooden benches of Etnico (Kolokotroni 22 & Havriou, 2114113880/ Metro: Syntagma/Monastiraki), you can fit Indian samosas, and Mexican burritos, as well as an Arabic falafel, while a Hawaiian variation of sushi awaits you at the Poke (Petraki 7, 2103226653/Metro: Syntagma), a delightful street food stall where rice goes into a bowl with raw fish cut into small cubes on top, with a sauce and its accompaniments.
