Suggestions on how to take a fresh look at your vacations destination: -Be unprepared Deliberately shield yourself from as much foreknowledge of a place as possible and do not view travel guides and websites in advance. -Automatic Pilot After a few days of vacation, you start taking regular routes. Try to deviate from these “familiar” routes. -Leave the map at home With your mind free from destinations and goals you’ll be in a much better frame of mind to experience the journey itself. -Ask questions By asking the locals questions about the area (restaurants, cafes, nice spots to visit etc.), you will learn new things and feel more connected with the environment. Most people like sharing things about their neighbourhood. Apart from the fact that we have dialed down our expectations, we also realise that vacation times have ups and downs just like everyday life. As you take yourself with you on vacation, “yourself ” is the same person you are at home. Maybe on vacation we are on a nicer version of ourselves because we are vested and under less stress, but in the meantime, we still have our personal insecurities. Finally, there are images in our mind about how a vacation should go from day to day, and we have learned that it is best to get rid of them. It can also help us realize that we do not control most of what happens in our lives. he Dutch team, one of the favourite dance groups of the Greek audience, returns to the Athens Concert Hall in early February with three performances - among them, the latest work by awardwinning Marco Goecke, which just premiered in September. What else do choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot have in store for us? Their joint venture “Safe as Houses” inspired by the I Ching, the Chinese Book of Changes and J.S. Bach’s melodies. In addition, the performance “Partita for 8 Dancers” by Canadian Crystal Pite, based on Caroline Shaw’s musical arrangement Partita for 8 Voices from the album Roomful of Teeth. The ultimate Homo Universalis is honoured in 2019, five hundred years after his death. The series of events has already commenced in Athens with a triple exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci - 500 Years of Genius”, which unfolds the life and works of this great master and inventor through replicas of inventions, interactive machines, copies of his famous codes and audiovisual exhibits. With over 200 unique exhibits from the Leonardo da Vinci Museum in Rome and an analysis of the enigmatic Mona Lisa by Pascal Cotte and the Lumiere Technology Institute. In January, the Simon Boccanegra opera in a production by the Royal Opera House, comes to the Greek National Opera housed in the new cultural landmark of Athens, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre at the Faliron bay. One of the most famous operas by the Italian composer, and a true challenge for any baritone, was first written in 1857 with further additions made in 1881, in order to express Verdi’s political thinking and ideals for a united Italy, far from fratricidal wars, through the lips of the Genoa doge. Having won the Laurence Olivier Award three times, director Elijah Moshinsky draws inspiration from the art and architecture of the Renaissance. he National Gallery may be closed for renovations and building expansion works, but opposite the Greek Parliament, right in the heart of Athens, you can see part of its collections until early February. The exhibition “The Scent of a Woman in Greek Painting” at the B&M Theocharakis Foundation, exhibits 85 exquisite paintings that portray the female figure, which indirectly also speak about her position in Greek society. More than 145 working replicas and reconstructions of inventions provide answers at the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology Kostas Kotsanas, in the historic Art Nouveau building at the posh Kolonaki area. The two permanent exhibitions on technology, ancient musical instruments and games will introduce you to the Antikythera Mechanism and the robot-servant of Philon, the cinema of Heron, the lyre of Hermes, Apollo’s guitar and the Homeric phorminx. Running at the same time until the end of 2018, is a free-entry exhibition on the military technology of the ancient Greeks. THE ACCLAIMED choreographer Nacho Duato who has made the Spanish National Ballet renowned throughout the world, and is now general and artistic director of the Berlin State Ballet, collaborates for the first time with the Greek National Opera Ballet on a piece which deals with the soul’s decay titled “Herrumbre”, meaning rust in Spanish. A photograph of the Guantanamo prison showing prisoners on the ground like animals was the starting point for Duato to “construct” a resounding statement against violence and all forms of terrorism. ifissia is one of the m o s t p i c t u re s q u e ‘hubs’ in the northern suburbs of Athens. It is full of greenery, with more parks than the whole city, houses with memorable architecture and a history from ancient times to today. Access to Kifissia is easy, either by car or by public transport. My favourite is the train: Kifissia is the northern terminal station of an overground line that takes you all the way to the port of Piraeus. The train passes through the centre of Athens. The town has easy access to the airport via the Attica Road and it is also close to the National Road, which allows for quick weekend escapes. I chose Athens as a place to live and work in 1990, when I returned to Greece with a dream to create a branding agency based in Athens. Not only because I am Greek, but also because the climate is pleasant with at least six months of sunshine every year, and because of its easy access to most of Europe’s metropolitan cities. Kifissia felt like a natural choice for both home and office, since it combines quite a few interesting features. The first and most important is the proximity to nature while living in a small city with character.

y day usually starts with a brisk walk through the streets and some of the parks, such as the Alsos Sigrou, or the Alsos of Kifissia next to the train station, which are both beautiful for different reasons. Through these walks I have learned to appreciate Kifissia even more, since I’ve discovered some of the prettiest natural spots. Neoclassical buildings in Strofyli Street, the small houses in the Alonia area, the different studios of artists like the one of Antonia Lekatsa, a ceramist and friend and the studio of Sundayman, a musician of electronica. A likely stop, depending on the time I have, is Varsos, one of the oldest traditional dairies and confectioners in Kifissia and in Athens, where even now, being run by the third generation of owners, nothing has changed in the quality on offer. Having developed a friendship with Constantinos Varsos and his father, we chat a little before I take my Greek coffee under the morning Attica sun, along with a cream or cheese pie. It is a small breakfast to start a busy day, while sitting outside watching the city life unfold. After breakfast, I may choose some flowers from the street florist or some fresh nuts and dried fruit from my new favourite shop Carpo, then quickly walk back home and get to the office where I meet with the Red team and set priorities for the day. Our office is located near the centre of Kifissia, a convenient 15-minute walk from my home. It is a well balanced work space with a garden, a sunroom that serves as a meeting room and a loft studio.

sually, I enjoy having lunch at the office, since it is an opportunity to catch up with my sister and business partner Gina and the Red team on various issues, in a more informal way. When I have lunch outside the office, my favourite spot is Different Beast, a cool, easy going place with a well balanced menu and a relaxed atmosphere. On the other hand, a quite different option is Salumaio, an Italian classic, also suitable for business meetings. If time and distance allow it, Kifissia is an ideal place for business meetings (even though there are always those who prefer the centre of Athens), and having an excellent hotel infrastructure, it is also the neighbourhood we recommend for the accommodation of our business associates from abroad. The lush greenery, mild temperatures, as well as the great shops, cafes and restaurants make Kifissia an ideal destination for everyone. There is even a suggestion by the municipal authority to have tourist buses come to Kifissia from Syntagma; an idea that, if implemented, will also bring new visitors to the northern suburbs of Athens, who will undoubtedly enjoy with this lesser known part of the city.

o when I have visitors, my daily walk around the area is enriched by two additional stops that I love dearly: one is the Goulandris Natural Histor y Museum, one of Kifissia’s “gems” which opened its doors to the public in 1965, with botanical, zoological, geological and paleontological exhibits, as well as a delightful cafe restaurant, and the other is the Kouvoutsakis Art Institute, with a very interesting permanent collection and a variety of events. A cocktail along with some delicious Thai food at BUBA, is an ideal way to end the day. BUBA is a unique place created by one of the most imaginative and active Athenian entrepreneurs Constantinos Zouganelis: it is warm, with an adventurous bohemian atmosphere and eclectic taste. It is the perfect place to unwind, relax and socialise after an intense full day. Also highly recommended is the bar Escoba, an old classic bar for all “ages”. Its Rock ’n’ Roll style, along with a friendly atmosphere, makes it a classic local spot.

What do you recommend that the visitor to Greece takes back home? Something that will excite one of the 5 senses. That’s what we strive for in Anamnesia. Our country is so rich in flavours, aromas, images and sounds, that a reminder of such experiences will fill our daily life with warmth and optimism. Is the international audience aware of Greek artists? In the years of the financial crisis in Greece, many Greek designers dared to create collections from memorabilia which showcase the aesthetics of our heritage. Mainly because it has been created with a lot of love, personal care, time, and it is based on many collaborations with friends and acquaintances, who share the same values. The biggest difficulty you have faced? Financing an enterprise in a market that has been wounded by a prolonged crisis. Since our entire production is done in Greece, in support of Greek producers so that Anamnesia’s Greek DNA is more authentic, we all experience the same reality, and all transactions require mutual support, flexibility and trust from everyone. Your future plans? To take the Anamnesia products to all corners of the world, without one having to necessarily visit Greece. More than five hundred objects are about to find their place in the V&A, in order to showcase the influence of the French couturier and the homonym fashion house spanning 7 decades. Titled “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams”, the exhibition includes the revolutionary 1947 Bar suit, Princess Margaret’s 21st birthday dress, the groundbreaking Chicago ensemble by a 21-year-old Yves Saint Laurent, as well as creations by the designers who succeeded him as artistic directors of the fashion house, perfumes and accessories. Showcased in 11 sections will be the sources of inspiration for the collections (the historic outfits, the travels and gardens), as well as Dior’s love for British culture. Sixty-five years after a similar exhibition was held in France, the Pompidou Center’s tribute follows the evolution of one of the most influential artistic movements (1907-1917), from its initial Cézannian period to a hermetic analytical stage, culminating in a more synthetic version. Indeed, we are very intrigued by the choice of the Royal Academy of Arts to instigate a dialogue, through the Bill Viola/Michelangelo exhibition, between the American video-art master and the Italian Renaissance painter as a journey through the cycle of life. What will we see? A selection of Michelangelo’s most poignant works, including drawings of The Crucifixion and of course The Taddei Tondo, his only marble sculpture on British soil. This coming spring, the Louisiana Museum in Denmark surrenders to a colourful burst, the immersive images and sensuous dreamy landscapes of Pipillotti Rist. After all, the museum has an old acquaintance with the Swiss artist, as it was the first institution to acquire one of her works (Sip my ocean in 1996). Canal

The SNFCC Canal, which is 400 metres long, 30 metres wide, 70 to 150 cm deep with sea water processed in a reverse osmosis unit, restores the relationship between the local residents and the waterfront, as it incorporates the element of water. In addition to being a landscape feature, the Canal is host to weekly sailing and kayaking lessons for children and adults.

Esplanade

At ground level, a tree-lined pedestrian Esplanade runs parallel to the glass façade of the structure. Alongside is the Canal, which is a figurative extension of the adjacent sea. The Greek National Opera, the only Greek lyrical theatre, began operating at its new facilities at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in March 2017. From bridge to bridge

In the 18th century, the inhabitants of Zagori began to trade and the villages experienced economic growth, and were connected to the large European cities. However, movement of people and goods was restricted due to the rough terrain and rushing rivers. This was resolved by wealthy merchants who funded the construction of stone bridges. Dozens of bridges – named after their benefactors –, which are true works of art blend perfectly with the surroundings. Some of them rounded, others pointed, with one, two and three arches at their base. One of the most beautiful is the single-arched bridge of Noutsou-Kokkori between the villages of Dilofo and Koukouli. Built in the mid 18th century, it has also been used as a set for films and TV series. One can also easily get to the three-arched bridge of Plakida or Kontodimou (55m long) built in 1814, very close to the Kipi village. VIKOGIATROI (Doctors from Vikos) was a name given to the experiential doctors who would treat patients in the past with herbs collected from the Vikos Gorge. Today, the word is associated with a traditional coffee shop at the Koukouli village. Words can not describe the sensation when visiting Vikos for the first time. It is one of the world’s most impressive gorges (the deepest in proportion to its width according to the Guinness Book of Records), a gigantic “cut” splitting Zagori in two. It stretches for tens of kilometres and has vertiginous cliffs as deep as a thousand metres. The small homonym river flowing through the rare plants and medicinal herbs, eventually joins other streams to form the Voidomatis river – yet another “star” of the region. Rare animals such as roe deer, bears and golden eagles find their habitat in the virgin area surrounding the crystal clear river.

The food experience

Food in Zagori is just like the region itself: a pure and hearty experience, full of surprises. The traditional recipes are based on products from the region: meat and dairy products, wild greens and herbs, forest fruit and cereal grains cultivated in the small plateaus. Just like in the whole of Epirus, the pies really stand out, which can be had anytime of the day and on any occasion. There are dozens of variations, the best known being the kasopita (flour dough pie with oil, butter, egg and cheese) and the batsaria (a mix of wild greens and feta with corn flour porridge). Meat dominates the main dishes mostly with goat, lamb and veal, often combined with mushrooms, chestnuts and forest fruit, served with pasta, or potatoes. The meal is accompanied by the wines from Zitsa (an area close to Ioannina) and of course, the traditional tsipouro.

THE NATURE

Built at an altitude of 1200m right at the heart of Pindos and surrounded by dense forests, it is the starting point for unforgettable excursions into nature. Hikers love its trails – one of which is the famous Ursa Trail (trail of the bear), which recently won the Leading Quality Trail - Best of Europe certificate. For the winter sports enthusiasts, there are the skiing resorts of Politsies (or Profitis Ilias) and Karakoli. Relatively nearby is the Valia Calda National Park, possibly the most virgin area in Greece, as well as the artificial lake of the Aoos springs where one can go canoeing while having the snowy peaks as a backdrop. THE DISTINGUISHED PAST AND PRESENT

The inhabitants of Metsovo are known for their industriousness and patriotism. In previous centuries, many merchants made their fortunes abroad and made generous charitable donations to the whole of Greece. Today, the visitor can admire the mansions made of stone, the old churches, monasteries with the wood-carved iconostases and about 25 traditional water fountains. One can also visit the Averoff Art Gallery, a true ark of modern Greek art with more than 200 works by the most significant Greek painters, sculptors and etchers (Lytras, Gyzis, Volanakis, Parthenis, Chatzikyriakos-Ghikas, Tsarouchis, Moralis, Fasianos and others). THE LIVING FOLK TRADITION

Situated at the point where Epirus meets Thessaly and Macedonia, it is endowed with a very distinct folk tradition. Even today, we see elders in the streets proudly wearing local outfits and hear them speak the old Vlach language. The folk craftsmen of Metsovo are famous for their wood-carvings and hand-woven textiles that can be purchased from the town’s shops. THE CHEESES AND WINES

The Metsovo regionproduces some of Greece’s tastiest cheeses - including the metsovela, the batzisio and the most famous of them all, the metsovone. The latter matures for at least 3 months and has a very characteristic salty and spicy flavour, which seems to capture all the aromas of Pindos. It is simply irresistible! They also have a long tradition in winemaking and it is indicative that in the 18th century, the annual wine production exceeded 500,000 bottles. Today, the region’s wine is produced in one of the most mountainous vineyards in Europe. And indeed, a tour of the 1,200 oak barrels at the wonderful Katogi Averoff winery is a truly memorable experience. THE LOCAL GASTRONOMY

In the minds of many people, the word Metsovo is synonymous with good, hearty food. In the town’s tavernas, and nearby villages like Anilio, one can enjoy the local dishes like lamb with cauliflower, Metsovo sausage, kontosouvli, boiled goat, wild boar, trachanas, and a large variety of pies. To Paradosiako (+30 26560 42773). Oven cooked wild boar, pork tenderloin with a sauce from Metsovo cheeses and other delicious meals in a taverna with traditional decoration. Galaxias (+30 26560 41202) Local meats, boiled goat, leek meatballs and other dishes. The menu does not lack the local saganaki (fried cheese) with local metsovone. Fournos Tsiba (+30 2656 041951). A bakery which has been baking in a traditional stone built oven for over 200 years. It is famous for its pies with fresh local ingredients and fermented bread.

from Zagori to Metsovo

Discovering the most stimulating varieties from Epirus with the guidance of sommelier and wine consultant of the Panas Group, Konstantinos Tsatsaris.

etsovo and Zitsa are two of the most important wine producing regions in northwest Greece. Starting our tour from the picturesque Metsovo, it is worth mentioning that here we find one of the country’s most mountainous vineyards at an altitude of 1100m, belonging to Katogi Averoff, that introduces itself as a hotel & winery, and that is exactly what it is (2656042505 , www.katogiaveroffhotel.gr): one of the most beautiful wineries in the country, with the option of luxurious hospitality. Many European, as well as domestic wine varieties are cultivated in this estate, with the stand out ones being the Xinomavro (distinctive deep red colour, high acidity, intense tannins, rich body and strong tomato aroma), Vlachiko (a red variety with subtle tannins, good acidity, fairly good body and forest fruit fragrance), Roditis (a white variety, mostly used for blending, with a moderate aroma, medium body and high acidity), and the Asyrtiko (a white variety from Santorini with a strong body, a mineral aroma and sharp acidity). Heading towards Zitsa, it is worth noting that this area has been renowned for its wines since the 19th century, also mentioned in the poems of Lord Byron from 1809. Today, it hosts three wineries, the most significant being the Ktima Glinavos (2658022212, www.glinavos.gr), where apart from top quality sparkling and still wines, it also produces traditional tsipouro which is worth trying. Significant wine varieties are cultivated at the estate, like the Debina (a white variety with a strong fruity character, medium body, moderate acidity, best known for the famous Greek sparkling wines Zitsa), Malagousia (considered one of the country’s most aromatic white varieties with a balanced body and acidity), Bekari (a red variety from which still and sparkling wines are produced with a strong aroma of red fruit, full mouth sensation and moderate acidity), and the Vlachiko (as described above) which in this winery it is worth trying it in a blend with Bekari.

Even though the photo lens focuses on snapshots of contemporary Athens, as seen on the wall mounted black-and-white photographs, the menu travels back to the everyday urban cuisine of the 50’s and 60’s, making good use of local recipes and ingredients. FROM FARM TO TABLE | Located on a popular pedestrian street in the city centre, this restaurant by one the most renowned Greek farms is also a stone’s throw away from its own butcher shop. Here, quality meats play the starring role, many of which are enhanced in flavour through a dry aging process. You just pick your cut, they grill it in the open grill area and it lands straight on your table. As for the new “mountainous” dishes that precede it, like the delicious meat pie with ewe stuffing and caramelised onions and crispy phyllo, or battered eggs with mushrooms and smoked trachana (fermented grain mix with yoghurt or milk) - a totally Greek comfort food -, they all indicate that the kitchen does a remarkable job. eing an integral part of Greek culture, the taverna, the plain, everyday Greek restaurant, was always a place for meeting and sharing. Being a “custodian” of rebetiko music and folk song, a comfort shelter during hard times, a daily and festive outing, it would bring all social classes together sitting at its tables next to wood burning heaters and wine barrels. The wine carafes kept on coming, conversations would spark up, with meatballs and small fish sizzling in the frying pans, while people would share food, their joys and woes, raising the glasses to toast and drive out all evil. Many Sunday family meals traditionally took place there, with children running around playing with their marbles and toy cars, and eventually with nintendos and ipads. This still goes on. Tavernas serve a colourful mosaic of genuine Greek food with vegetable dishes cooked in olive oil and pulses, meat prepared in pots or in the oven, providing comfort and warmth, just like it is made at home. And when habits changed and saw the addition of Indian, Chinese, Thai, contemporary and fusion cuisine restaurants to the local culinary scene, the tavernas still stood strong. This is because these reassuringly homely flavours spark memories for the Greeks. A taverna’s kitchen is like a small folklore museum in its own right.
