National Tourist Routes in Hardanger The National Tourist Routes comprise 18 selected motoring trips through majestic natural surroundings in Norway. Viewing points and rest areas have been created along the routes employing innovative architecture and thought-provoking works of art that reinforce the experience of the beautiful landscape. All of the 18 routes, from JĂŚren in the south to Varanger and in the north, have their own unique character in terms of the roads, the natural surroundings and history. National Tourist Route Hardanger and National Tourist Route Hardangervidda transport us back to sceneries and landscapes associated with national romanticism. Here you can experience mountains, fjords, waterfalls and glaciers around valleys of fruit orchards. Folgefonna National Park

Visit the summer ski centre FONNA Glacier Ski Resort www.visitfonna.no, or join a guided glacier hike into a different world. The Hardangerfjord route is a part of National cycle route no. 6 between Voss and Leirvik (191 km). The Norwegian Museum of Hydro Power and Industry The power station Tysso 1 next to the Hardangerfjord is a monument of the hydropower adventure that started in 1906. Trolltunga

Trolltunga is one of Norway’s most spectacular places. The hike is in high mountains and takes 10-12 hours. Ascent: 900 m. (p. 50-51) Wild nature – be careful! Four beautiful waterfalls – Husedalen valley

One of the most beautiful hikes in Norway. Four stunning waterfalls close to each other in Husedalen next to the trail from Kinsarvik to the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. Hardangervidda National Park

Hardangervidda National Park is the largest national park in Norway. This vast mountain plateau offers excellent hiking opportunities for both seasoned hikers and recreational hikers. www.turistforeningen.no

HM Queen Sonja’s panoramic hiking trail

This is one of HM Queen Sonja’s favorite hikes in Hardanger. The trail offers stunning fjord views and takes about 8 hours. A shorter alternative is to hike parts of the trail starting from Røte in Kinsarvik (p. 65). www.visitullensvang.no

ON THE FJORD Hardangerfjord sightseeing

Daily fjordcruise departing Norheimsund in the morning to Eidfjord. Calling the ports of Herand, Utne, Lofthus, Kinsarvik, Ulvik and Eidfjord. Return in the evening. Corresponding bus from Bergen 07:25, return from Norheimsund 17:50 (p. 90). Kayaking on the Hardangerfjord

The waterfalls

Driving in Hardanger takes you to the waterfalls (“foss” in Norwegian). The most famous are Vøringsfossen in Eidfjord (route 7, p. 18), Steinsdalsfossen in Norheimsund (route 7, p.40) and Låtefoss in Odda (route 13, p. 56).

THE HARDANGER BRIDGE

The Hardanger bridge opened in 2013, being one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. The main span is 1310 m and the towers are 200 m high. There is a separate lane for pedestrians and bicycles. The bridge makes travelling in Hardanger easier! (C 10)

FRUIT AND LOCAL PRODUCE The Fruit and Cider Route

In Ulvik you find this one of a kind route in Norway. Visit the three fruit farms Lekve, Syse and Hakastad offering a wide range of things to do and see. (p. 75) www.siderruta.no

Local farm shops

Visit one of the several farm shops in Hardanger and try some local specialities. The shops have different selections of locally made beverage and food. All shops have nice selections of products based on fruit and berries from the area. Bring a taste of Hardanger back home!

In May/June when the fruit trees are in blossom is Hardanger at its most beautiful. Depending on a warm or cold spring the blossoming season varies from year to year. In late summer and autumn fruit are for sale in the farm shops and directly from the farmers. Stopping along the road to buy fresh sweet cherries, plums, apples and pears is a nice experience. (p. 67)

THE BARONY IN ROSENDAL

THE PULPIT ROCK

“Preikestolen” (in Norwegian) is a plateau 604 meters above the Lysefjorden. The hike to the Pulpit Rock takes around 4 hours (in total). The Pulpit Rock is one of Norway’s best known nature attractions. In the cinema you can see the panoramic film “Fjord-MountainWaterfall” produced by Ivo Caprino, 20 thrilling minutes on a helicopter flight through fjords, between high mountains and canyons and over mighty waterfalls. The best-known waterfall in Norway. See vast quantities of water plunge 182 m from the Hardangervidda plateau into the Måbødalen valley. Excellent viewing point at Fossli Hotel, on route 7. The hotel is open around 20.05-15.09. Season: 01.06 – 15.09. During the winter the water is used for generating power. Trail to the foot of the Vøringsfossen, 90 min. round-trip. Parking at the upper end of the Måbø tunnel on route 7. National Tourist Routes started construction work for viewing platforms and more in 2015. Kjeåsen is 530 m above Simafjorden. Visit the mountain farm and experience these unique surroundings or simply enjoy the views. You can drive to Kjeåsen from Simadalen. Traffic up every hour and down every half hour. Good but steep tourist footpath to Kjeåsen from Simafjorden. The footpath starts by the fjord near Sima Kraftverk (power station). One of the biggest hydroelectric power stations in Europe. The power plant is built 700 m inside the mountain. The turbine hall is 200 m long, 20 m wide and 40 m high. Hardangervidda National Park covers 1/3 of Eidfjord municipality. The national park has a wide network of trails for summer hikes and winter skiing. There are many mountain lodges along route 7 and into the wilderness. With Eidfjord as a starting point there is a short distance between the high mountain plateau and the Hardangerfjord.

Skjervsfossen waterfall is located along the historic route along “Skjervet”, a short detour from route 13 between Granvin and Voss. It consists of two falls in succession, and drops 150 m. There are several paths for hiking near the waterfall, and the parking and rest rooms facilities has been improved by National Tourist Routes.

Granvin has many fine hikes to offer. Examples: - The old railway track. A foot- and bike path from Eide to Voss. - Post road to Ulvik, beautiful scenery and cultural sights, 4 hours. - A trip along the Granvinfjord. From Eide to Hamre. Map available at the town hall.

Experience local history at Granvin Bygdemuseum. The site includes six old buildings, the oldest dates from the 1700s. See the collection of objects from the area, including an exhibition of Johan Havaa’s botanic collection and the school museum in the old schoolhouse. (Krossdalen, Jondal) The hike starts at the summer farm Botsvatn (667 masl). A nice sandy path takes you from the parking area to Buførevegen paved by Sherpas up the hillside towards the treeline. Then cairns made by stones will guide you onwards towards Jonstein (1,344 masl). 3-4 hours roundtrip. A nice hike with beautiful views!

Sawmill in Herand

Boatbuilding was an important trade in Herand in times gone by. The logs were cut on a water powered saw mill, in full operation until the late 70s, catering for traditional boat builders. The mill was restored in 1909 and 1992. The saw is usually in operation in April, May and June. Guided tours on request all year.

One of the most popular waterfalls in Norway. The Steinsdalsfossen has a fall of 50 m and is special because you can walk safe and dry behind it. In the summer season you can take a short boatride from the welcome centre at Steinstø quay to the salmon farm on the fjord. ABOUT HIKING TO TROLLTUNGA • The trail starts in Skjeggedal, 7 km from Tyssedal. • This is a demanding hike. 23 km in total, minimum 10-12 hours. Ascent about 900 meters. • The start is a steep 400 meters ascent • Start early in the morning. • The weather in the high mountains may change fast, check the weather forecast before starting. From Tyssedal you can drive to Skjeggedal. From here it is an 10-12 hour walk to Trolltunga and back. Ascent around 900 metres. Information and hiking map can be obtained at the Odda tourist office or in Skjeggedal. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Bring food and water. No mobile phone coverage. The hike requires good physical condition. Parking fee in Skjeggedal. Respect the mountain. All nature-based activities and the use of the information provided are at your own risk. The church was built between 1200 and 1250, and is famous for its healing crucifix still in the church. According to legend it sweats once a year on “Olsok” (July 6th after the Julian calendar), and the sweat has healing power. Røldal was one of the most important sites of pilgrimage in Norway during the middle ages and pilgrims continued to come until 1835, longer than any other place in Norway. The church is beautifully decorated, and is still the parish church for Røldal. Guided tours during the summer season. There are several pilgrim trails in connection with Røldal stave church. In Odda and Røldal there is an abundance of hikes to choose from. Some examples: - Rossnos The highest peak around the town of Odda. The cairn on 1,401 masl can be seen from the centre of Odda. 6 hours return hike. - Strand-Sandvin Hike through beautiful farm land, and get close to the Strandsfossen waterfall. Signposted trail. 2 hours return hike. - Havrenås From the centre of Røldal through varied terrain. The peak is 896 masl. Nice view of Røldal from the top. 5 hours return hike, 400 meters ascent.

The World's smallest litterature house is in Røldal, the "Bokbua" at Kalvatræet. Local litterature and second hand books for sale. The scenery and waterfalls in Husedalen simply take your breath away. Four stunning waterfalls are close to each other along the hiking trail from Kinsarvik up to the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. A hike from the car park to the uppermost fall and back takes 5-6 hours. The area is easily accessible and a good alternative for hikes of any length. Hardanger Fossasti (footpath) is a light walk starting in Kinsarvik. Follow the path along the river and read the information boards along the way. Maps are for sale at the Tourist Office. Reisæterlia is in Folgefonna National Park. Sherpas from Nepal have built more than 2,000 stone steps for comfortable hiking. The hike starts at Reisæter (above Nå) at 300 meters asl, and ends at Eggje 1,200 meters asl. Duration: 4-6 hours. The trail is a part of the Pilgrim route from Jondal to Røldal stave church (p.55).
