The National Tourist Routes comprise 18 selected motoring trips through majestic natural surroundings in Norway. Viewing points and rest areas have been created along the routes employing innovative architecture and thought-provoking works of art that reinforce the experience of the beautiful landscape. All of the 18 routes, from Jæren in the south to Varanger and in the north, have their own unique character in terms of the roads, the natural surroundings and history.

“Preikestolen” (in Norwegian) is a plateau 604 meters above the Lysefjorden. The hike to the Pulpit Rock takes around 4 hours (in total). The Pulpit Rock is one of Norway’s best known nature attractions. From 1 July - 31 August there is a daily bus service connecting Hardanger and Ryfylke for hiking to Trolltunga and Preikestolen. An alternative way of encountering nature and history in Hardanger. Examples are Tysso Via Ferrata – in the footsteps of the navvy. A climb along the pipelines from the Norwegian Museum of Hydro Power and Industry, Himmelstigen Via ferrata (‘the ladder to heaven’) to Trolltunga. Zip-line “Trolltunga Zippen”, 4-5 hours. Winter/ spring: ski or snowshoe hike to Trolltunga 19 March - 1 June, about 10 hours. See page 29.

7 Hardanger Basecamp Stay overnight in comfortable Mongolian Yurts situated in unique natural surroundings. Includes a free workshop “making fire”. You can combine your stay with nature related activities, offered by the B-Active Center in Ulvik. 1 The Viking burial site at Hæreid Starting point: The bridge in Eidfjord. The Hæreid plateau is about 100 meters above sea level. The largest selection of graves from the Iron-and Viking ages in Western Norway (about 400). Excellent view of the fjord along the trail.

3 Steinstølia Starting point: The quay at Steinstø. The trail is the old road to the summer pasture farm. Walking through an orchard on the way. Steep hike and beautiful views of the Hardangerfjord.

5 Buerdalen valley and glacier Starting point: Parking area in Buerdalen near Odda. Hike up to Buerbreen glacier, an arm of Folgefonna glacier. The last part of the hike is in steep terrain. See page 30.

This is one of HM Queen Sonja’s favorite hikes in Hardanger. The trail offers stunning fjord views and takes 6- 8 hours. A shorter alternative is to hike parts of the trail starting from Røte in Kinsarvik.

2 Sima Power Plant One of the biggest hydroelectric power stations in Europe. The power plant is 700m inside the mountain. The turbine hall is 200m long, 20m wide and 40m high. During the summer season there are daily guided tours and film show. Open for groups all year. See page 13.

Summer exhibiton 2016: Olav Christopher Jenssen. Kabuso presents exhibitions, concerts and other events all year round. Ingebrigt Vik Museum houses a collection of the works of the artist Ingebrigt Vik. Pieces in bronze, plaster and marble are on display. 5 Hardanger Akvasenter A visitor centre on a fully operational salmon farm. The centre has exhibits and an information desk, and you can visit the actual production facilities. Groups can order a lunch with tasty salmon dishes or samples. See page 23.

In the cinema you can see the panoramic film “Fjord-Mountain- Waterfall” produced by Ivo Caprino, 20 thrilling minutes on a helicopter flight through fjords, between high mountains and canyons and over mighty waterfalls. FONNA is a summer ski centre on the glacier Folgefonna. Alpine skiing, freestyle park, cross country tracks and guided snow shoe hikes. Hardanger Akvasenter On a fully operational salmon farm the visitors get the opportunity to see and learn about one of Norway’s main export industries. The centre has an exhibition with underwater cameras, videos and other exhibits explaining the life cycle of the salmon and modern aquaculture. A visit includes a guided tour on the facility, including feeding the fish. A recommended option for groups is to include a salmon lunch or sample tasting as a part of the tour. Røldal stave church The church was built in the 13 century and according to the legend, a cross in the church sweats every midsummer’s eve and the sweat has healing powers. During the Middle Ages, Røldal was the most important pilgrimage destination in Norway after Nidarosdomen in Trondheim. The church is still in regular use. Guided tours in the summer season.

Buerdalen and Buer glacier The Buer glacier is an arm of the Folgefonna glacier. There are marked footpaths to the edge of the glacier. A trip through the fertile Buerdalen is ideal on foot or by off road bike.

Biking: Along the National Tourist Route. Utne-Herand

Reisæterlia is in Folgefonna National Park. Sherpas from Nepal have built more than 2,000 stone steps for comfortable hiking. The hike starts at Reisæter (above Nå) at 300 meters asl, and ends at Eggje 1,200 meters asl. Duration: 4-6 hours. The trail is a part of the Pilgrim route from Jondal to Røldal stave church. The trail has wonderful views of the fjord and the mountains.

4 go-karts for kids over 8 years, and 10 go-karts for adults. 1 doublekart with passenger seat (over 8 years). The track is 578 m long, 7-8 m wide with timing equipment showing lap times. The track is known as exciting and challenging. You may hire the whole track for a group, or just a kart. The track is situated 2 km from the centre of Kinsarvik towards Husedalen valley.

Route 550 between Utne and Herand is a quiet road going through orchards and a beautiful landscape. 23 kilometres with amazing views. The bikeride may be combined with the boat service Hardangerfjord sightseeing. For rental bikes, see www.sykkelihardanger.no.

On the fruit farm Hakastad a wide range of traditional apple varieties are grown. They make a wide range of apple juices and ciders, varying in taste, sweetness and acidity. The good apple taste is central in all the products of the farm. Guided tours and a taste of the products for groups on request, 10-40 persons. Ulvik Frukt & Cideri is a part of the Fruit and Cider Route in Ulvik.

A traditional Western Norway fruit and sheep farm. Farm shop with homemade products like applejuice, jam, canned fruit and different products of lamb. This craft business is also an Économusée for fruitfarming. Guided tours for groups and product tasting or a simple lunch on request (capacity: 10-80 pers). Syse Farm is a part of the Fruit and Cider Route in Ulvik.

The newly opened Olav H. Hauge Centre in Ulvik offers a unique insight into the life and work of one of Norway’s most acclaimed poets. The exhibition also conveys poetry in many forms across language boundaries. The Olav H. Hauge Centre also has a museum shop, poetry library, poetry workshop and activities for children. Exhibition texts are in both Norwegian and English. The Green Cafe has indoor and outdoor seating right by the beautiful Ulvik fjord. A guided tour for groups can be booked in advance.

Hardanger Basecamp Stay overnight in comfortable Mongolian Yurts situated in unique natural surroundings. Ideal for individuals, families and small groups. Includes a free workshop “making fire”. You can combine your stay with nature related activities, offered by the B-Active Center in Ulvik. At the 100 year old Osa café you can have breakfast, dinner and during the day Belgian pancakes and snacks. In the Osa café they also offer an interactive nature talk with demonstrations making fire, edible plants, flintknapping and tastes of homemade products. (for groups max 30 p.)

B-Active B-Active offers activities and rental equipment. You can hire bikes, kayaks, rowing boats and a sail boat. You can join historical hikes into the old water tunnels in Osa, courses and workshops related to nature, stone age or bush craft skills. There are also guided hikes, guided bus tours and indoor archery. Simple catering for groups up to 50 persons in the B-Active cafe or on the Fjord terrace. Activities outside the season are available on request.

Hjadlane Galleri A privately owned gallery that features figurative contemporary art. The exhibitions often spotlight the thought-provoking and colourful images of Lars G. Polden and other artists. Guided tours on request all year.

Skjervsfossen waterfall is located along the historic route along “Skjervet”, a short detour from route 13 between Granvin and Voss. It consists of two falls in succession, and drops 150 m. The Fruit and Cider Route is a collaboration between Hardanger Saft- og Siderfabrikk, Syse Farm and Ulvik Frukt & Cideri. Festivals in May (Siderslepp) and October (Fruktslepp). All the farms are within walking distance, and every farm offers a truly unique experience.

Osa mountain
