HIGHLIGHTS IN HARDANGER OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Hiking to Trolltunga
Trolltunga is one of the most spectacular cliffs in Norway! The hike is up in the high mountains and takes 10-12h in total from the parking lot in Skjeggedal (P2) (p. 54-55). Trolltunga Active offers a combined bike, hike and via ferrata guided tour to Trolltunga and more trolltunga-active. com (p. 58). The Hardangerfjord route is a part of National cycle route no. 6 between Voss and Leirvik (191 km). cyclingnorway.no. Parts of the route follow the Norwegian Scenic Route Hardanger. The road between Utne and Jondal is highly recommended, you will be close to the fjord, the nature and the orchards. Allow yourself a stop at Hereiane (p. 32). HIKING Hikes with a fjord view
From the summits around the Hardangerfjord you get the most spectacular views. HM Queen Sonja’s panoramic hiking trail from Røte in Kinsarvik to Lofthus offers great views over the Sørfjorden, about 8 h (p. 68). From Mt Oksen (1241 masl) in Ullensvang there are wide views both east, south and west. Starting at Tjoflot, 6-7 h return hike (p. 68). Mt Melderskin (1426 masl) is one of the highest summits in the Rosendal Alps, offering stunning views over the glacial landscape and the fjord towards the Atlantic ocean. Starting at Kletta in Rosendal, 7-8 h return hike (p. 51). From Mt Samlen (470 masl) in Herand there are panoramic views over the Hardangerfjord. Starting at Åsleite 3 h return hike (p. 30).

Hiking in a glacial landscape

In the valleys Buardalen and Bondhusdalen you will see the icefalls coming down from the Folgefonna plateau glacier. Both valleys are gateways to the Folgefonna National Park, and you can clearly see how they are shaped by glacial activity. Buardalen and Buarbreen are in Odda, and the hike to the icefall is about a 4 h round trip hike (p. 59). Bondhusdalen and Bondhusbrea are in Sundal, and you can walk through the beautiful valley and continue along Lake Bondhusvatnet. The hike takes 2-4 h in total depending on how far you walk along the lake (p. 50)
Hiking to the mighty waterfalls
Along the trail through Husedalen valley from Kinsarvik towards the Hardangervidda mountain plateau there are four huge waterfalls. This is regarded as one of the most beautiful hikes in Norway. Seeing all the four waterfalls is a 5-6 h round trip hike (p. 67). In Eidfjord, you can walk through the canyon towards the foot of Vøringsfossen waterfall. When starting at Storegjel in the Måbødalen valley 1.5 h return hike, when starting at Fossatromma 2-3 h (p. 16).

National Parks
There are two National Parks in the Hardangerfjord region, Hardangervidda and Folgefonna. In Hardangervidda National Park there are marked trekking routes in the summer and ski touring trails in the winter. The municipalities Eidfjord, Ullensvang and Odda are all gateways to the Hardangervidda National Park. The core of Folgefonna National Park is the Folgefonna glacier, and it covers a large area including areas in Jondal, Kvinnherad, Odda and Ullensvang municipalities. HIGHLIGHTS IN HARDANGER MUSEUMS AND VISITOR CENTRES Visitor centres
The Norwegian Nature Centre Hardanger offers a geological time travel from ancient times showing the development of todays landscape, flora and fauna. This is a visitor centre for Norwegian nature, climate and environment and also a National Park Centre for Hardangervidda National Park norsknatursenter.no (p. 16). At The Folgefonn Centre in Rosendal you will learn about Folgefonna National Park, life in the Hardangerfjord and climate changes through interactive exhibitions folgefonnsenteret.no (p. 48). In Ulvik you can get to know the works of the poet Olav H. Hauge at the Olav H. Hauge Centre with exhibitions, poetry library and a poetry workshop haugesenteret.no (p. 77).

Museums
Agatunet at Aga is one of the few authentic remaining hamlets in Norway. There are buildings from different eras to visit and exhibitions to see agatunet.no (p. 66). Hardanger Maritime Museum in Norheimsund has different craft workshops, exhibitions and family friendly activities fartoyvern.no (s. 36). Hardanger Folk Museum at Utne offers exhibitions of Hardanger fiddles, Hardanger embroidery, folk costumes and more. Open air museum with historic buildings hardangerfolkemuseum.no (s. 66). At Kraftmuseet – the Norwegian museum of hydropower and industry in Tyssedal there are guided tours in the beautiful power station Tysso 1, film and exhibits showing the history of the hydroelectric power development in Hardanger kraftmuseet.no (p. 58).

Historic places
Baroniet Rosendal and the Manor house from 1665 at is the only barony in Norway and the smallest castle in Scandinavia. It is known among other things for its beautiful landscape garden and the rose garden. There is a rich culture and art program through the summer season baroniet.no (p. 48). Røldal stave church from the 13th century is known for its healing crucifix which still is in the church. The stave church is beautifully decorated inside (p. 59).

Galleries
Galleri G Guddal is situated at Guddalstunet near Rosendal. There are temporary art exhibitions and an art shop. Charming café in the old farmhouse galleriguddal.no (p. 48). At the art centre Kabuso in Øystese there are art exhibitions and a cultural program throughout the year. Hardanger Skyspace is a light installation by James Turrell, and tickets are sold at Kabuso kabuso.no (p. 37).

ON THE FJORD Express boat services
Hardangerfjord Sightseeing has daily services between Norheimsund and Eidfjord from 1 May to 30 September, calling at the ports of Herand, Utne, Lofthus, Kinsarvik and Ulvik. Corresponding bus services to and from Bergen norled. no (p. 94). Hardangerfjord Express Boat is an all year passenger ferry service between Bergen and Rosendal, also calling at Flesland quay next to Bergen airport rodne.no (p. 94).

RIB tours on the fjord

Experience the Hardangerfjord from a RIB. Trolltunga Active offers tours at Sørfjorden starting from the centre of Odda trolltunga-active.com (p. 58). In Eidfjord you can join Hardanger Fjordsafari on different RIB tours hardangerfjordsafari.no (p. 17). Norheimsund RIB Seafari offers RIB tours on the Samlafjorden and into Fyksesundet norheimsundrib.no. (p. 36)
Chartered tours
Tailored fjord tours with a local captain are available. The boat Pilagutt takes you on a fjord cruise or a fishing tour pilagutt.no (p. 30). With M/Y Iselina Bella (Princess 50) tailored tours also including overnight stays and catering are available hardanger-fjord.no (p. 67). Car ferry crossings
The car ferry crossings between Kinsarvik-Utne, Kvanndal-Utne and Jondal-Tørvikbygd are all a part of Norwegian Scenic Route Hardanger. HIGHLIGHTS IN HARDANGER Waterfalls
In Hardanger you will have close encounters with spectacular waterfalls! The five most known waterfalls (foss in Norwegian) are all easily accessed from roads. Vøringsfossen (p. 16) in Øvre Eidfjord is close to route 7, and also Steinsdalsfossen (p. 36) in Norheimsund is along route 7. Låtefoss (p. 60) in Odda along route 13, Furebergfossen (p. 51) in Mauranger along route 551 and Skjervsfossen (p. 26) is a short detour from route 13 between Granvin and Voss.

Blossoming and fruit
The fruit blossoming in Hardanger in May-June is a beautiful sight (p. 69). In the late summer and in the autumn you can buy fruit directly from the farms or from one of the local farm shops (p. 18, 26, 37, 38, 76). The one and only fruit and cider route in Norway is in Ulvik, with the three fruit farms Syse, Lekve and Hakastad (p. 76). Syse farm is also an Économusé for fruit farming (p. 76).

Viewing points and rest areas have been created along the routes employing innovative architecture and thought-provoking works of art that reinforce the experience of the beautiful landscape. The best-known waterfall in Norway. See vast quantities of water plunge 182 m from the Hardangervidda plateau into the Måbødalen valley. Excellent viewing platforms near Fossli Hotel 1 km from route 7. The hotel is open around 20.05-15.09. Season: 01.06 – 15.09. During the winter the water is used for generating power. Trail to the foot of the Vøringsfossen, more information at p. 16. National Scenic Routes started building several viewing platforms in 2015, and all the viewing platforms near Fossli Hotel are now completed. There is a path through the canyon going in to Vøringsfossen waterfall. It is an amazing hike through a wild landscape. Parking at Storegjel in Måbødalen valley or at Fossatromma. Halnekongen is a passenger boat summer service on lake Halnefjorden at Hardangervidda. There are two daily departures from Halne Mountain Lodge along route 7 to Skaupa and Sleipa. The tour is 13 km and takes about 40 minutes. You may just take the boat trip, and come back to Halne, or start hiking back to Halne or into Hardangervidda National Park. Kjeanes The hike starts from the parking lot at Sima power plant. Walk along the fjord to Kjeaneset, where the people at Kjeåsen kept their boats. Turn right for a steep ascent up the mountain side. There are ropes, logs and ladders along the path to make the climb possible. Marvellous views along the path ending up at Kjeåsen mountain farm. Climb very carefully! It is very steep and it might be slippery.

You can bike along the fjord from Eidfjord to Simadal and continue to the Skytjefossen waterfall. Skjervsfossen waterfall
Skjervsfossen waterfall is located along the historic route along “Skjervet”, a short detour from route 13 between Granvin and Voss. It consists of two falls in succession, and drops 150 m. Kvanndalsstølen – summer farm

A nice hike through the Kvanndal valley up to Kvanndal summer farm 560 meters above sea level. The marked path has been used since early times to take the cattle to the summer pastures. Start and end of the hike at Kvanndal quay. Walk north at Kvanndalsvegen from the quay passing private houses to reach the marked path to Kvanndalsstølen. From Ingebjørgfjellet (1210 masl) there are good views over Sørfjorden and Eidfjorden. The hike starts from Stokksel in Granvin. Turn towards Kjerland farm shop from route 7, and continue up the Stokkselvegen road (toll road) to the parking sign. The hike is in steep terrain and takes about 6 h in total. Average season is from June-September. From Ingebjørgfjellet there is a marked path continuing to Mt Oksen p. 68. Granvin B 10

From Seljenuten (700 masl) there is a great view of the Granvinfjorden and the Hardangerfjord. The hike starts at Hamre in Granvin about 7 km from the industrial area/centre of Granvin. Parking by the turn where the road splits. The terrain is steep but nice up towards Seljenuten. The hike takes about 4-5 hours in total. Average season is June-September. From Seljenuten there is a marked path continuing to Mt Oksen. Granvin C 9

From Nesheimshorgi (1150 masl) there is a wide view over lake Granvinsvatnet and the mountains around Voss. The hike starts at Havås in Granvin. Drive the Krokavassvegen road (toll road) up to Høgde for parking. Easy terrain until pond Håtjørn, then a steep path up Nautadalen to Nesheimshorgi. The hike takes about 4-5 hours in total. The exhibition «A journey through 9000 years» at Herand Kulturhistoriske Senter shows the development of Herand from the last ice age until the last century. The cultural trail in Herand is a walk through a landscape with traces of settlements from 9000 years ago at Hellerane, Bronze Age petroglyphs and Iron Age boat house remnants and burial sites. Saksaklepp is the highest peak in Jondal (1491 masl). From the summit there is a nice view over the Hardangerfjord and the Folgefonna glacier. The hike starts at Dravladalsdammen. Drive towards Folgefonna glacier (toll road NOK 100) to get there. The ascent from the parking is 650 m, and the hike takes about 5 h going up and down. Average season is July-October. Jondal D 8

Hereiane is situated along Norwegian Scenic Route Hardanger between Jondal and Utne. It is a unique undulating rocky landscape from the fjord up to the mountains. A nice picnic area and unusual rest room facilities along the road. A signposted path to Haugsvarden (370 masl) starts 100 m north of the picnic area. Choose between two options: From Botsvatn (Jondal) to Reisæter (Ullensvang) The hike starts at Botsvatn (667 masl) situated in Krossdalen (direction Folgefonna from Jondal). A sandy path takes you from the parking area to Buførevegen paved by Sherpas up the hillside towards the treeline. Then cairns made by stones will guide you across the high mountains towards Reisæter. DO NOT hike this trail in bad weather. 7-9 hours. Botsvatnlia-Jonstein A shorter alternative is to hike up Botsvatnlia, around Jonstein (1,344 masl) and down to Skarvabotnen. From Skarvabotn down to Botsvatn, follow the gravel road. In total 3-4 hours.

One of the most popular waterfalls in Norway. The Steinsdalsfossen has a fall of 50 m and is special because you can walk safe and dry behind it. The fall occured in 1699 when the river changed course. There is a footpath from the car park up to and under the waterfall. Along Norwegian Scenic Route Hardanger. Tourist information office. At the Folgefonn centre you will learn about life in the Hardangerfjord, Folgefonna National Park and climate change. In the interactive exhibitions topics like the global cycle of water, biodiversity at the Folgefonn peninsula, life in the depth of the Hardangerfjord and the oceans are presented. The only barony in Norway is in Rosendal, and the Manor House from 1665 is the smallest of its kind in Scandinavia. Visiting the barony is a time travel through changing eras, with rooms and interiors created by the owners during 250 years. The barony is kept in the same way as the last owner left it in 1927. It is well known for its beautiful rose garden and landscape garden created during 300 years. In the summer season there is a rich cultural programme with concerts, exhibitions, theatre in the courtyard and lectures. Halsnøy monastery

The monastery was established in 1163 by Erling Skakke. Visitors today will find monastery ruins from the 14th century, a large farmhouse from 1841 and gardens. Guided tours, exhibitions, lectures and concerts. The area is beautifully located at the inlet of the Hardangerfjord, and is one of several premises managed by the Sunnhordland museum. The gallery is situated at the beautiful Guddal farm that has been awarded the “Olavsrosa” from Norwegian Cultural Heritage. In the stone park there are boulders from the region worked on by the sculptor Bård Breivik and the mason Rolf Karlsen. You will learn about geological history and minerals. A 23 meter long timeline in granite shows the history of planet Earth, also including weapons and tools used by the first people to settle along the Hardangerfjord. In Kvinnherad there is a long history of building ships. The Skaaluren yard in Rosendal made a wide range of different ships. The Skaaluren collection covers the activity from 1855 to 1955, including a collection of tools, construction drawings, models and photos. The museum is located in an old warehouse next to the Folgefonn centre on the quay in Rosendal. Entrance is included in the Folgefonn centre ticket. Rosendal G 6
The Bondhus valley and the Bondhus glacier

The Bondhus valley is near Folgefonna National Park, offering a beautiful hike to Lake Bondhus and the Bondhus glacier. It is a an easy hike taking 2-4 hours, depending on how far into the valley you walk. Gravel road to Lake Bondhus, then a path continuing to Vetledalen (320 masl) where you can see the icefall of the Bondhus glacier up in the mountainside. Information boards along the route, but not completely signposted. Parking in Bondhusdalen, after turning off from the main road in Sundal, following signs to Bondhusdalen. Bremstølen (460 masl) offers a view of the Husnes town and the islands in the outer part of the Hardangerfjord. The starting point for the hike is along route 48, 1.5 km north of the Helland bridge. Parking at the forest road where the hike starts, or at the picnic area 150 m south of the forest road. The hike is about 5 km and takes 2 hours in total. Available all year. Husnes H 5

From Rosendal you can see straight up to Mt Melderskin (1,426 masl), one of the highest summits in the Rosendal alps. From the top there is a wide view over the coastal landscape, the fjords and the glacier. Drive towards the barony from the centre of Rosendal, and follow signs towards Melderskin. Starting point for the hike from the car park at Kletta. It is a demanding hike, 7-8 h in total. Season June – September. Rosendal G 6

From Sjethaug (285 masl) there is a wide view over Rosendal and the Hardangerfjord. The hike starts in the centre of Rosendal, is about 6 km and takes about 2 hours. Sjethaug may also be included in a hike via Mt Skålafjell or via the forest road at Neslia. At Sjethaug there is a cabin open for the public, and it is a nice place for a picnic. Available all year. It is a nice hike to walk from Rosendal to the summer pasture farm at Kjeldestøl. It is a charming place, ideal for a picnic. Every Wednesday 26 June – 7 August there are dairymaids at Kjeldestøl, selling coffee and snacks. Drive by the church in Rosendal, and park along the gravel road after 100m. About 40 min walk along the gravel road, then about 15 min on a signposted path towards Kjeldestøl. Available all year. Rosendal G 6
Furebergfossen waterfall

The waterfall is next to route 551 between Ænes and Sundal at the inlet of the Mauranger fjord, which is an arm of the Hardangerfjord. The mighty Furebergfossen waterfall follows the steep mountain side towards the fjord, and has a free fall of 20 meter. As the road crosses the waterfall you are guaranteed a close encounter! In Kvinnherad the coastal landscape meets the fjords, and it is an excellent region for travelling with boat. There are nice guest harbours in Husnes, Sæbøvik, Uskedal and in Rosendal. Kvinnherad church in Rosendal was built around 1250. The medieval church is built in stone, and the interior is beautifully decorated. From 1678 until 1910 the church was the property of Baroniet Rosendal, and in the burial chapel we can see the sarcophagi of the first barons and their families. Rosendal G 6

Vangssago old sawmill
In 2005 the Vangssago sawmill was moved from Vang in the centre of Rosendal to the entrance area of the stone park. The first sawmill at Vang was built in the 1590s, and the current sawmill was built in 1929. One of the most spectacular cliffs in Norway! From the parking lot in Skjeggedal (P2) there is a 28 km return hike to Trolltunga, 1,200 metres total ascent and a 10-12 hours hike. Information and hiking maps at Odda Tourist Office and the shop of Trolltunga Active in Skjeggedal. Sturdy hiking boots are required. Bring food and water. Partly mobile phone coverage (Telenor). Røldal stave church

The church was built between 1200 and 1250, and is famous for its healing crucifix still in the church. According to legend it sweats once a year on “Olsok” (July 6th after the Julian calendar), and the sweat has healing power. Røldal was one of the most important sites of pilgrimage in Norway during the middle ages and pilgrims continued to come until 1835, longer than any other place in Norway. The church is beautifully decorated, and is still the parish church for Røldal. Guided tours during the summer season. There are several pilgrim trails in connection with Røldal stave church. The Buar valley and the Buar glacier is one of the entrances to Folgefonna National Park. The path in the beautiful valley goes through a varied landscape in to the Buer glacier, which is a part of the Folgefonna glacier. Along the trail there are picnic areas, livestock farms and amazing waterfalls. The trail requires good physical condition, there are also some steep parts. Good parking facilities, fee NOK 150. The highest summit around Odda is Mt Rossnos (1,401 masl). Mt Rossnos is visible from the centre of Odda, and from the top there is a view over Folgefonna glacier, the Sørfjorden and Odda. The trail is about 8 km, and takes about 6 h in total. You may start in the centre of Odda, or park at Freimsvegen. From Odda, drive towards Tyssedal, turn right from the main road 300 m after the bridge crossing river Opo, and follow signs towards Rossnos and Freimstølen. Season June – October. Odda G 9

The scenery and waterfalls in Husedalen simply take your breath away. Four stunning waterfalls are close to each other along the hiking trail from Kinsarvik up to the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. A hike from the car park to the uppermost fall and back takes 5-6 hours. The area is easily accessible and a good alternative for hikes of any length. Season May – October. An easier alternative is to walk from the centre of Kinsarvik along the river to the first waterfall. This is one of HM Queen Sonja’s favorite hikes in Hardanger. The trail is in the high mountains between Kinsarvik and Lofthus and offers magnificent fjord views. The hike takes about 8 hours. The Pilgrim Trail in Reisæterlia

Reisæterlia is in Folgefonna National Park. Sherpas from Nepal have built more than 2,000 stone steps. The hike starts at Reisæter (above Nå) at 300 meters asl, and ends at Reisætereggje 1,200 meters asl. Duration: 4-6 hours. The trail is a part of the Pilgrim route from Jondal to Røldal stave church (p. 59). Stone cairns from Reisætereggje up in the high mountains to Botsvatn in Jondal. The 1,380 meter long bridge opened in 2013, being one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. There is a separate lane for pedestrians and bicycles, so you may cross the fjord on foot, by bike or in a car. It is a beautiful sight to behold when the fruit trees in Ullensvang are in full blossom around May. Routes between Bu and Odda and Odda - Utne - Jondal boasts numerous idyllic orchards.
