“Preikestolen” (in Norwegian) is a plateau 604 meters above the Lysefjorden. The hike to the Pulpit Rock takes around 4 hours (in total). The Pulpit Rock is one of Norway’s best known nature attractions. From 1 July - 31 August there is a daily bus service connecting Hardanger and Ryfylke for hiking to Trolltunga and Preikestolen. 2 Trolltunga Trolltunga Active offers guided tours to Trolltunga on skis or snowshoes, in the period from early March to the end of May. The hike starts and ends in Skjeggedal and is, like the summer hike to Trolltunga, a demanding full day activity (10 to 12 hours). Trolltunga Active also offers other more easy snow- and winter activities.

3 Folgefonn glacier Snowshoeing with Folgefonni Glacier Team is an easy activity and fits everyone (from 12 years). As the blue ice at Folgefonna Glacier is covered by snow most of the year, tours are available all year round but routes will depend on actual snow conditions. February to June and October to December are very good periods for snowshoe walks on or around the Folgefonna Glacier.

In the historic houses at Hardanger Folk Museum (Utne) and Agatunet (Aga) groups may experience the culture and heritage of Hardanger at close range. Guided tours and special arrangements like Hardanger fiddle concerts, cider tastings or courses are available on request all year round. The permanent site-specific light installation Hardanger Skyspace by James Turrell gives a unique experience of light, perception and space, open all year round (sunrise and sunset).

HIKES AND WALKS Hardangerfjord is the perfect region to choose for scenic hikes and walks of all categories. There are options for everyone, from families with children to experienced ramblers. Several hikes in the region are also available in spring and autum, others are in high mountain area, available in summer season only.
Røldal
1 The Viking burial site at Hæreid Hæreid is the largest burial site with graves from the Iron-and Viking ages in Western Norway (about 400 mounds). Easy and short (1.5 hours) hike from the centre of Eidfjord, historical guide and map at Eidfjord Tourist Office. The Hæreid plateau is about 100 meters above sea level. Excellent view of the fjord along the trail.

5 Buerdalen valley and glacier Buer glacier is an arm of the Folgefonna glacier, near Odda. Marked footpath to the edge of the glacier, the last part of the hike is in steep terrain. Parking area in Buerdalen near Odda, road from Odda Camping is closed for busses and camper vans. Guided glacier hikes available (Flatearth Adventures) See page 30

7 HM Queen Sonja’s panoramic hiking trail One of HM Queen Sonja’s favorite hikes in Hardanger, offering stunning fjord views. The trail is in the high mountain, normal Season from July to mid-Spetember. A shorter alternative is to hike parts of the trail starting from Røte in Kinsarvik.

There are many different walking routes in Jondal, from easy to challenging hikes. Most paths are marked. Examples: • Elvastien (riverside path), a wonderful walk in the middle of Jondal (suitable for prams). • Sætveit- Fjellstøl- Vikanuten, magnificent views over Jondal and the Hardangerfjord. • Climb to the top of Saksaklepp, the highest peak in Jondal with a wonderful view over the fjord and glacier. • Åsleite-Samlen, from the top of Mt Samlen there is a marvellous view over the Hardanger fjord, roundtrip 3 hours.

Lots of good, varied hikes in the area. Examples: - Steinstølia, Steinstø – Bjørke. Steep hike through the orchards in Steinstø. Built in the 13 century. According to the legend, a cross in the church sweats every midsummer’s eve and the sweat has healing powers. During the Middle Ages, Røldal was the most important pilgrimage destination in Norway after Nidarosdomen in Trondheim. The church is still in regular use. Guided tours in summer season.

Hikes
In Odda and Røldal there is an abundance of hikes to choose from. Some examples: - Rossnos. The highest peak around the town of Odda. The cairn on 1,401 masl can be seen from the centre of Odda. 6 hours return hike. - Strand-Sandvin. Hike through beautiful farm land, and get close to the Strandsfossen waterfall. Signposted trail. 2 hours return hike. - Havrenås. From the centre of Røldal through varied terrain. The peak is 896 masl. Nice view of Røldal from the top. 5 hours return hike, 400 meters ascent.

Hardanger Cideri
Four stunning waterfalls close to each other along the hiking trail from Kinsarvik up to the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. Hike from the car park up to the uppermost fall and back 5-6 hours. Hardanger Fossasti, footpath along a river, is a shorter walk starting in Kinsarvik. Information boards along the way, maps for sale at the tourist information.

Trail in Folgefonna National Park, newly upgraded with more than 2,000 stone steps. Hike starts at Reisæter (300 masl), ends at Eggje (1,200 masl), 4-6 hours. The trail is part of the Pilgrim route from Jondal to Røldal stave church, good viewpoints.

Poetry Centre centrally located in the beautiful village Ulvik, offering a unique insight into the life and work of Olav H. Hauge, one of Norway’s most acclaimed poets. Skjervsfossen waterfall
Ulvik has spectacular areas with varied marked walking trails, starting from from Ulvik center. Examples: • Kvasshovden Opp, 0-1 030 m above sea level, marked trail, 7.5km. Osa mountain
Scenic mountain area 1 250m above sea level, located between Bergensbana/Rallarvegen and Osa. The Hardangerjøkulen glacier is one of the highest peaks in the area. Open road for traffic between May and September, 20km from the centre of Ulvik. Toll road.
