About the trail: HM Queen Sonja of Norway is a passionate mountain hiker, and this is one of her favorite hikes in the Hardangerfjord region. The hike is long and demanding with a steep descent towards Lofthus. You will walk through forests, high mountains and lush orchards. Follow the dirt road from Røte up to Heng at 750 meters above sea level. From here the trail is marked with blue Ds (“Queen” in Norwegian is “Dronning”). The route down to Lofthus, including the “Monk steps”, is marked with red Ts.

About the trail: This is an historic route connecting Jondal and Krossdalen with Sørfjorden. A rough translation of Buførevegen is “the path to take the cattle and sheep into the mountains”. There are beautiful views of Sørfjorden and the Folgefonna glacier. The hike takes you into the Folgefonna National Park. The trail has been restored with assistance from Sherpas from Nepal rebuilding the trail with stones. Infoboard at Reiseter. Partly steep. Do not continue to hike past the first stone cairn (markers) at Reisetereggje (at 1,200 meters above sea level) without a local guide. The terrain is difficult and challenging.

EVERY YEAR THERE ARE SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS FOR HIKERS IN SERIOUS TROUBLE. PREPARE WELL, AND BE A RESPONSIBLE AND SAFE HIKER! CONSIDER JOINING A GUIDED GROUP.

ABOUT HIKING TO TROLLTUNGA • The trail starts in Skjeggedal, 7 km from Tyssedal. • This is a demanding hike. 23 km in total, minimum 10-12 hours. Ascent about 1200 meters. • The start is a steep 400 meter ascent. • Start early in the morning. After 1 September, start before 8:00 AM. • The weather in the high mountains may change fast. Check the weather forecast before starting. Do not hike to Trolltunga in heavy rain or in foggy weather. • It is always colder in the mountains than down by the fjord. • Intermittent mobile phone coverage along the trail (Telenor). • The nature is vulnerable, and camping is not recommended. Bring an emergency bivvy in case of bad weather or injuries. • The hike to Trolltunga is long and demanding and unforeseen situations may arise. Because of this, it is recommended to hike with a local guide.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO ODDA There are several good daily connections to/from Odda and Voss, Bergen, Stavanger and Oslo. National route planner on www.tidr.no Preikestolen: Trolltunga – Preikestolen express bus, see p.90 www.tide.no

TAKE WITH YOU ON THE HIKE • Sturdy mountain boots, warm clothing and rainwear, emergency bivvy, plenty to eat and drink, headlamp and a simple first aid kit. • Bring back all garbage.

About the trail: Historic tourist route that was established in the late 19th century. At that time, the tourists were taken on horseback from Sundal on the other side up to the glacier, on sledge across the glacier, and on horseback down to Odda. Today, in July and August, it is still possible to do the same tour (without horses) with professional guides from Folgefonni Breførarlag (Folgefonni Glacier Team) when crossing the glacier. The trail is quite steep. It is important to have good footwear, warm and windproof clothing, maps and a compass. The weather changes rapidly on the glacier, and it is often foggy. On the glacier you can stay overnight at the summit cabin at Holmaskjer.

About the trail: The hike goes into the high mountains where you will find snow all year round. Beautiful views and lovely valleys with several small lakes along the trail to Hallet grøne. Parts of the trail have stone steps made by local dam workers, later employed as dam keepers. The works were carried out in order to use the water for hydroelectric power stations. The path crosses the alpine ski slopes in Røldal on the return hike.
