Harlow Town Park and Museum Gardens January 2020 update The Town Park’s Walled Garden is the centre of volunteer activity, with Harlow College Supported Studies groups working there on the first three days of the week. On Thursdays the Town Park volunteers, Men’s Shed and Open Road work on various projects in the garden and park. Once a month we host the Town Park weekenders group on a Saturday afternoon. It’s been a busy time at both the Town Park and Museum Gardens. At the park we have started the restoration of the Newfoundland Garden (near to the Skatepark) by opening up views down the valley towards the bridge, removing some old conifers and replacing them with Silver Birch and other native trees. A new information board has also been installed, along with a watering point. The volunteers have been busy planting trees, along with a climate change shrub bed (plants that can withstand hotter and drier summers) and clearing ivy off trees. This has transformed a rather neglected area of the park and will hopefully attract more people to visit. The Museum Gardens volunteers continued to clear overgrown shrub beds and will shortly have a new shed for their tools and general welfare. Community Payback has helped clear dumped vegetation in the woodland by the car park and we are preparing a Management Plan for the three gardens there. The volunteers work here three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) and are always looking for new volunteers.
The Men’s Shed continues to develop in the Walled Garden and is now meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Groundwork East is continuing to work with local young adults, getting them more involved in the park and extending their work to local schools in the area. Silver Birch offers a specialist Dementia Service event twice a week at the Learning Centre. Christmas activities were arranged such as the Pets’ Corner Nativity Play, Christmas Carols on the Terrace and two local schools holding their concerts on the bandstand, despite some windy weather! If you would like more information on both Park and Gardens please contact Mike Levett on 01279 435466 or email mike.levett@harlow.gov.uk.
