Long neglected on a library shelf in Brandenburg Castle, these six ‘Concertos for several instruments’ have since become some of the best-known works in the classical repertoire for their musical inventiveness and their games of mathematical symmetry. Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music have endeavoured to return to the original ‘chamber’ conception of the works, with one player per part. They will be performing this program in concert in March.

BACH Cantatas for Alto — BWV35, 169 & 170
Hk948 1c()* @?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
In 1726, Bach entered a new period of creative innovation in Leipzig. Renouncing the chorus, he built up a constant dialogue between solo arias and finely sculpted instrumental parts. The three cantatas presented here represent the culmination of this development, and have established their place as a peak of the recorded repertoire.

Vincent d’Indy is one of many great nineteenth-century composers whose reputation has suffered through the vagaries of fashion. Yet his fine body of works shows an imaginatively eclectic engagement with the musical trends of his age. This disc from Thierry Fischer and The BBC National Orchestral of Wales presents a fascinating selection of d’Indy’s orchestral works. Symphonic poems Wallenstein and Saugefleurie are paired with two charming single-movement works for solo viola and orchestra that showcase the talents of Hyperion artist Lawrence Power.

Aa34571c!&^$@?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
This disc juxtaposes two significant Russian works for violin and orchestra, each written by a composer with a close relationship to Tchaikovsky and each dedicated to the great violinist Leopold Auer. Both concertos are formidable display pieces and Ilya Gringolts, one of the great young violin virtuosos of today, dazzles in this repertoire. He is ably supported by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Ilan Volkov. Arensky’s concerto is a model of the flowering of Russian romantic nationalism and Tchaikovsky’s influence on his friend is pleasingly evident. Taneyev’s much larger Suite de concert is a clever synthesis of different styles from Baroque to Romantic and includes a musical homage to Tchaikovsky.

HAYDN London Symphonies Nos.93-104
Chamber music devotees will welcome this first volume of a new series by the award-winning Florestan Trio. Haydn’s piano trios are a uniquely important body of work. The form (where the piano took center stage and was accompanied by a violin and a cello) was quite popular in domestic circles. Haydn took the form beyond the salon and poured into these accompanied sonatas as much inventiveness and range of musical expression as he did into his piano sonatas and string quartets.

MacMillan had previously considered writing a passion and used the opportunity of the commission to produce a setting based on the Gospel of St John. The result is a highly dramatic work, featuring a small choir to provide the narration and a solitary baritone soloist to portray Christ. The work received its premiere on April 27, 2008 at the Barbican in London and was recorded for LSO Live.

Stephen Kovacevich (piano) Onyx Classics • ONYX 4035
Il80 40c$)#%@YO Price Code: A21 (Suggested Retail Price: $21.98)
After more than 40 years, pianist Stephen Kovacevich returns to the piece that brought him worldwide fame — in Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. In the 1990s, Kovacevich recorded the complete Beethoven sonatas for EMI and the set is now one of the standard recommendations. This recording effectively completes that cycle. Kovacevich made his sensational UK debut with this piece in 1961 and recorded it in a still-classic version for Philips in 1968. His conception has changed — it has a more live quality (despite being a studio recording) and more dramatic — quite simply, it picks you up and sweeps you along irresistibly to the very end. As a generous bonus, Onyx offers Kovacevich’s first-ever recording of music by Bach.
“In a period when Beethoven interpretation has become fairly standardized, Kovacevich remains a free spirit, making a profoundly personal response to the music and playing in an improvisatory style, which fits descriptions of how Beethoven performed his own music.” — The Boston Globe

Before this recording, which was made following a concert at the Royal Festival Hall, Rudolf Kempe had never conducted the Alpine Symphony. The sessions are particularly well remembered by horn player Alan Civil, who was famously cynical about many conductors. On his stand he would keep a complete pocket score of the work he was rehearsing, and was known to make musical points from it to conductors he felt were lacking in talent or detail. Rudolf Kempe, however, was one of the conductors (along with Beecham, Karajan and Klemperer) that Civil especially admired.

In the late 1940’s, the London Philharmonic attracted a very impressive list of celebrity conductors, thanks to brilliant managing by its former viola player, Thomas Russell. He was a major force in the Orchestra’s rebirth as a selfgoverning orchestra in 1940 when Sir Thomas Beecham was no longer able to maintain it. The LPO became a national symbol of survival and cultural ideals for the people of England during the war. As well as playing with Bruno Walter, the orchestra was led by Victor de Sabata, Ernest Ansermet, Erich Kleiber, Charles Münch, Paul Paray, Eduard van Beinum and Serge Koussevitsky. Oistrakh’s rocketed to stardom in 1937 when he won first prize at the Ysaÿe Competition in Brussels. Oistrakh’s playing was marked, apart from a phenomenal technique, by stylistic fidelity to works by different composers of different historical periods.

Testament’s highly acclaimed release of the legendary 1955 stereo recordings of the Ring made by Decca at Bayreuth featured the first of two cycles of performances conducted by Joseph Keilberth and staged by the Festival’s co-director Wieland Wagner. Partly for security, partly out of interest, Decca’s engineers, under Peter Andry, also recorded the second cycle, from which this first-ever release of Götterdämmerung is drawn. It provides listeners a chance not only to hear a different musical perspective but also to appreciate the amazing depth of Bayreuth’s casting resources. For these performances Martha Mödl took over as Brünnhilde while Hans Hotter, the production’s Wotan/Wanderer from 1952, took on the role of Gunther.

File in: World / Europe / Portugal António Zambujo was born in Beja, Alentejo (South of Portugal) in 1975. He fell in love with Fado when listening to Amália Rodrigues, Alfredo Marceneiro, Maria Teresa de Noronha and João Ferreira Rosa. And it was singing, when Zambujo was only sixteen years old, that he won a regional Fado contest. His professional career started when Mário Pacheco, the renowned Portuguese guitarist and composer, invited him to sing in his Club de Fado, in Lisbon. Soon after that Zambujo was chosen to take the role of Francisco da Cruz, Amalia Rodrigues’ first husband, in the blockbuster musical Amália. He performed the role continuously during the musical’s four year run in Lisbon and after that he toured all around Portugal achieving enormous success. His new record Outro sentido is a statement from a mature artist that has found his own unique Fado style.

Pynandí (Los Descalzos)
File in: World / South America / Argentina Innovative Argentinean accordion virtuoso and composer Chango Spasiuk’s latest CD is entitled Pynandí (Los Descalzos) (Barefoot), from an indigenous Guaraní word, referring to that nation’s impoverished rural populations. This is quite fitting as, like American blues, Portuguese Fado and Argentina’s own tango, the sunny, lilting chamamé was at one time considered too lower-class to be of interest to educated listeners. But that was before Spasiuk, with his uninhibited stage demeanor and flying blond hair, put his spin on it, delighting traditionalists while intriguing rock and jazz audiences. The current album is a love letter to the land of Spasiuk’s birth, capturing the red earth, blinding heat, and rough good humor and warm fellowship of laborers heading out for an evening’s fun. Each of the 15 tunes harbors a contradiction of some kind; although this music is seductively accessible, it is also anything but easy listening – in the best possible sense.
