The beautiful and often erotic poetry of the “Song of Songs” found some of its most sumptuous settings in the motets of Palestrina, Lassus, Victoria and other Continental 16th-century masters, sung here by Britain’s “brightest new stars” of Renaissance polyphony, the singers of Stile Antico.

BACH Jesu, deine Passion Cantatas BWV22, 23, 127 & 159

Hk948 1c(!)!@?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Bach reserved some of his most elaborate cantatas for worship on the Sunday before the beginning of Lent - and it was for that very day in 1723 that he composed the cantatas BWV 22 and 23, as test pieces destined to gain him the post of Leipzig Kantor. The cantatas BWV 127 and 159 were written for the same Sunday in subsequent years.

BACH Brandenburg Concertos

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Long neglected on a library shelf in Brandenburg Castle, these six Concertos for several instruments have since become some of the best-known works in the classical repertoire for their musical inventiveness and their games of mathematical symmetry. Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music have endeavored to return to the original ‘chamber’ conception of the works, with one player per part. Also of interest is Egarr’s choice to use French baroque pitch, which is nearly a full step lower than modern tuning. This change adds a remarkable richness to the sound and improves balances in some of the concertos.

According to legend, Mozart was so rushed when writing K379 and K454 that he was forced to premiere the pieces with incomplete piano parts. Paying homage to this spirit of spontaneity in a programme of some of Mozart’s most beloved chamber works, Petra Müllejans and Kristian Bezuidenhout present a reading of these pieces that recaptures the freshness and volatility of those early performances.

Brahms had passed the age of forty before he finally deemed a string quartet worthy of appearing in his catalogue. Thus he joined those composers who, like Mendelssohn, Schumann and Dvorák, had succeeded in freeing themselves from the heritage of Beethoven in this genre. The work is extremely demanding for its performers, as is the Piano Quintet Op.34.

The rare, late 1920s and ‘30s recordings of the little-known Scandinavian soprano Eidé Norena are the subject of this release. Norena’s debut took place in Oslo, where she sang Cupid in Gluck’s Orfeo in 1907. These tracks date from the second phase of her recording career. Norena had established herself as a notable Juliette in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette and recorded six 78-rpm sides, five with Gaston Micheletti, a leading tenor at the Paris Opera. These excerpts are featured here on CD for the first time, and reveal a touching innocence combined with a worldly maturity. Other composers represented include Grieg, Handel, Haydn, Meyerbeer, Rimsky-Korsakov, Verdi, Bizet and Puccini.

In the 1947 recording of the Double Concerto heard on this release, Kulenkampff is partnered by cellist Enrico Mainardi, with Carl Schuricht conducting the L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Hk5 138c!)$@ ]T Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

It has recently become a favorite intellectual game to compare Josquin’s career with that of Beethoven. Essentially the point is that Josquin was as influential a composer in his time as Beethoven was in his; but the subplot is that Josquin ought to be taken as seriously as any later composer even though he lived so long ago and only wrote for voices. These Mass-settings are two of the finest to come from any pen. The Tallis Scholars have been performing the music of Josquin regularly in concert for over twenty years. Their 1986 CD of his music remains the only recording of Early Music to have won the Gramophone Record of the Year Award. This new release is the latest in The Tallis Scholars’ projected Complete Josquin Mass Cycle.

“Josquin’s music certainly rewards repeated listening, but it particularly shines when performed by such experienced, authoritative singers who’ve made a career not only performing this repertoire, but taking the time and committing the effort to get it right.” — CLASSICSTODAY.COM

Markus Becker (piano) Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra Michael Sanderling Hyperion • CDA 67636

Aa34571c!&^#^+U Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Though barely remembered now, both Salomon Jadassohn and Felix Draeseke were major figures in German musical life in the second half of the 19th century. Both began their studies at the Leipzig Conservatory but after independently encountering Liszt and his work at Weimar in the 1850s both became disciples of that composer. Jadassohn subsequently returned to Leipzig where he composed and had a long and distinguished teaching career, his pupils including Delius, Grieg and Busoni. Draeseke moved to Dresden and taught at the Conservatory there. Both composers’ concertos are expertly crafted and feature wonderfully idiomatic piano writing, as one would expect of Liszt pupils. While not ground-breaking these are thoroughly enjoyable examples of the genre and one must question why the Jadassohn works in particular, which have truly memorable themes, have been so completely forgotten.

Cellist Steven Isserlis’ own words give the background to this fascinating disc as he states, “There is no composer to whom I feel closer than to Schumann. He has been a beloved friend since I was a child; I remain as fascinated today as I was then by his unique blend of poetry, ecstatic strength and confessional intimacy.” Schumann’s affection for the cello ran deep. It was an instrument he had played in his youth, and considered taking up again when, at the age of twenty-two, an accident to his hand forced him to relinquish his dream of being a virtuoso pianist. His love for the instrument is clearly demonstrated by the cello parts in all four of his symphonies, as well as in the concertos for piano and violin, and of course throughout his chamber music.

The vocal sextet Cinquecento are rapidly becoming one of the most admired early music ensembles recording today. This latest release presents the music of Jacobus Vaet. Vaet would undoubtedly be among the best-known composers of the sixteenth century had he not died at the age of about thirty-seven. In his short career Vaet produced, among other things, nine settings of the mass. His Missa Ego flos campi, a parody mass on an extraordinary motet by Clemens non Papa (also on the disc), is a notable example of his particular artistry. A fascinating selection of motets also demonstrates the composer’s vivid approach to word-setting and imaginative choice of texts.

These appear in many guises: for instance the ‘first half ’ concludes with Beethoven’s piano sonata No. 32, with its extraordinary set of variations. Then Hough takes the listener on a whirlwind tour of the waltz, performing some of the gems of the genre with his trademark immaculate polish and unerring style.

In his day, Paganini’s Caprices were considered unplayable by most violinists, but the composer himself bestrode their difficulties with contemptuous ease. Paganini was the archetype of the virtuoso performer. His technique was so phenomenal, and his presence so magnetic, that he was popularly believed to be in league with the Devil. Virtuoso violinists are plentiful these days, but the challenges posed by the Caprices are still daunting. Few can achieve such brilliance in this repertoire as the young German violinist Tanja BeckerBender has in her debut recording for Hyperion.

Yumiko Tanimura (soprano) Valerie Bonnard (alto), Sébastien Droy (tenor) Christian Immler (bass) Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne Ensemble Instrumental de Lausanne Michel Corboz Mirare • MIR 081

A monument of musical history, the Mass in B minor, like Beethoven’s Missa solemnis to which it has often been compared, is one of the greatest manifestations of religious art. At once teeming with invention and astonishingly poetic, this gigantic work, a veritable compendium of Bach’s musical erudition, has achieved justifiably mythical status. On this new disc from Mirare, the great choral conductor Michel Corboz leads an ensemble of modern instruments and a stellar group of soloists. March 2009

Price Code: A21 (Suggested Retail Price: $21.98)

At the age of twenty, Bach traveled hundreds of miles to meet the great Dietrich Buxtehude. Though intending to stay only a few weeks, he remained for months. The three sacred works presented on this CD are among the very first written by the young Johann Sebastian in his first posts as Kapellmeister in Mühlausen and Weimar. They display the heritage and influence of the old master Buxtehude, but also the force, the modernity, and the genius of the future Kantor. On this fascinating recording, the period instrument Ricercar Consort is led by Philippe Pierlot.

Pieter Wispelwey (cello), Sydney Symphony, Jeffrey Tate Onyx Classics • ONYX 4042

Il80 40c$)$@ YO Price Code: A21 (Suggested Retail Price: $21.98)

Pieter Wispelwey, one of the world’s greatest cellists, is the latest star to join the Onyx roster. In this outstanding recording of 20th century cello music, Wispelwey presents his first recording of the Walton concerto, accompanied by the Sydney Symphony under the experienced baton of British conductor Jeffrey Tate. The works for solo cello are interrelated and comprise the Bloch Suite (written at the same time as the Walton Concerto in 1957), the early Ligeti Sonata (1948-53) and two works written for Rostropovich, Britten’s Ciaconna from the 2nd suite and one of Walton’s own contributions to the solo cello repertoire, the Passacaglia. For the concerto Wispelwey plays his usual Guadagnini cello but for the solo cello works he was thrilled to be able to record on the great ‘Magg’ Stradivarius from 1698.

Many 19th century Italian operatic composers had problems with censors. Verdi’s disputes over Rigoletto notorious, but many other works by Rossini and Donizetti were rewritten to appease the arbiters of what was deemed morally, religiously or politically correct. Another victim was Saverio Mercadante. Virginia, completed in 1850, was not performed until 1866 because the composer refused to make alterations. The work is set in ancient Rome where the heroine, daughter of the soldier Virginio, is assailed by the corrupt and powerful Appio as part of an ongoing conflict between patricians and plebeians. It ends with Virginia’s father stabbing her rather than relinquish his daughter to their oppressor.

Following on the phenomenal worldwide success of the first release, SDG continues their Brahms series with a stellar recording of the second symphony. The recordings from this series are drawn from John Eliot Gardiner’s two-year “Brahms and his Antecedents” project, which not only celebrated Brahms the composer but traced the roots from which Brahms drew his creative inspiration. On this disc, the symphony is paired with the dark and moving Alto Rhapsody and three choral works by Franz Schubert. The disc is elegantly packaged in the same style as SDG’s acclaimed the Bach Cantatas CDs and the liner notes feature an in-depth conversation between Gardiner and composer Hugh Wood.

testament

In Wilhelm Furtwängler’s vision, Brahms was like a composer who came from the same lineage of Bach and Handel, an artist who fused in himself an enormous physical presence and extreme sensitivity. Furtwängler considered Brahms as the successor of the ancient German and Dutch Masters such as Van Eyck. To him, the Brahms symphonies depict a savage, fantastic and almost demonic world. Ultimately, Furtwängler considers Brahms as the image of the “classical” German, representing most strikingly German art with all its asperities and its sweetness, its vehemence and its discipline.

The festival of Richard Strauss’ music held in London during October 1947 was the result of a joint initiative by Sir Thomas Beecham and Ernst Roth, Richard Strauss’s publisher at Boosey & Hawkes. A vital part of this initiative was the presence of the composer himself. Strauss and his wife were then living as impoverished exiles in Switzerland. UK performance royalties on the composer’s work had been frozen during the war, but if he came to England he could collect those royalties and gather new payments for performances of his music. The acetate recordings transferred onto this disc were taken from this festival and include Don Juan, the Burleske for piano and orchestra, Till Eulenspiegel and the Sinfonia domestica.

File in: World / Middle East / Syria “A voice for love” is how some have described Waed Bouhassoun, a talented Syrian musician who sings to her own accompaniment on the lute. The youthful Bouhassoun is undoubtedly the embodiment of love, as is borne out by the choice of poems and texts for this, her first recording. Sometimes with strength, sometimes with fragility, her voice intensifies emotion and meaning to the point of ecstasy in the poems of Ibn Zaydoun, Jalal-Eddine, Rumi, Wallada or even Tahar Abou Facha and Mahmoud Bayram al Tounissi, the famous lyricists to Oum Kalthoum. The purity and intimacy of this recording invite the listener to enter into a world alive with sensitivity and elegance.

About the film

“The music does the talking in Nomadak Tx, an exhilarating, feverishly globe-hopping doc...” — VARIETY

March 2009

File in: World / Europe / Spain / Basque In the early part of the new millennium, a pair of intrepid musicians who call themselves Oreka Tx (from the Basque word for “balance” and the initial letters of their chosen medium) took their txalaparta, a locally beloved but otherwise little-known instrument, and traveled to India, Lapland, Mongolia, and the Sahara in search of fresh collaborations, adventures and ideas. The result was an astounding documentary film called Nömadak Tx (“Nomadic Txalaparta”) which won multiple awards at international film festivals and is coming soon to theaters worldwide. The beautifully designed CD of the same name, which offers a wealth of newly arranged material, makes an ideal companion to the film. The txalaparta, although nearly extinct as recently as the 1950s, is inextricably tied to Basque culture and is now enjoying a renaissance. It consists of wooden planks supported by insulated stands and is struck from above by two players, each employing a pair of thick, pestle-like wooden sticks. The players create complex, lightning-fast, changeable rhythmic and melodic patterns, moving between the tenor range and bass notes so profound that they pummel the listener’s solar plexus. Inspired for life by their far-flung encounters, the men of Oreka TX have obliterated established boundaries of culture, time and space by embracing and transforming them.

Brakka System

So Kalmery World Village • 479023

Hk948 1c()%(@]T Price Code: A18 (Suggested Retail Price: $18.98)

File in: World / Africa / Mali So Kalmery, the roving ambassador of brakka (a vibrant music-and-dance style from his native Congo), is back in the spotlight with a new album, Brakka System. The fruition of more than thirty years wandering the globe, Brakka System is not just an album — it’s a journey through a lifetime, a musical voyage deep into the heart of one man’s soul. Kalmery sings in Kiswahili, English and French. His lyrics are simple, but his strong voice reverberates with life. Even when he is accompanied by an assortment of instruments including the didgeridoo, flute and sax, Kalmery manages to evoke the image of the musician as a troubadour, providing wholesome outdoor entertainment to the local townsfolk.

— All Music Guide

March 2009

“Kalmery approaches his music with a joy and jauntiness that’s rare, pulling strands from all styles for African music, whether it’s the dry guitar sound of Kenya, the rich polyrhythms of West Africa, the density of the northern deserts, or the joyful guitar and vocals that characterize so much South African music – he’s a pan-African man, the continent’s equivalent of Taj Mahal. There’s a wonderful warmth to his voice and writing that brings to mind a less-bland James Taylor.... His songs and arrangements show a remarkable sophistication, and there’s an irresistible verve about the whole album that makes Kalmery a talent well worth hearing on a debut that’s assured and thoroughly individual.”
