The narrative of Christ’s Passion as retold by Barthold Brockes (a dominant figure in early 18th-century German literature) is of such dramatic power that it was set to music by thirteen different composers (including Handel, Keiser and Mattheson). Telemann’s version, premiered in April of 1716, became so famous that JS Bach, no immature youngster at the time, copied it out in full 23 years later. René Jacobs has striven to restore this quite extraordinary score to life in all its rich complexity.

“Jacobs’ productions are characterized by a lush profusion of ideas, by vivid colours and clear lines, and by a rare emotional immediacy.” — FINANCIAL TIMES

Orchestre des Champs-Élysées Philippe Herreweghe harmonia mundi • HMC 902011

Hk948 1c(!)%@[Q Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Rarely did the premiere of a Bruckner symphony arouse such enthusiasm; even if, in this case, the first performance took place nearly twenty years after its composition. The work captivated listeners with its ineffable mystery (one thinks of late Beethoven), combining ‘Baroque’ logic with Romantic introspection. Parting company with Wagner, Bruckner had clearly found his own unique musical voice.

April 2009

Venice, 1625: the city of the doges is one of the principal artistic centers of Europe. At the Cappella San Marco, a profoundly original style of instrumental music is in the process of discarding all reference to the tradition of vocal polyphony. The era of Baroque stravaganze has begun! Now, in the hands of Maurice Steger, a supreme master of the recorder, this ultra-virtuosic art acquires a new lease on life.

The poetic pianism of Harold Bauer

Complete Recordings Harold Bauer (piano) APR • APR 7302

F0wr70oc!&#)@)s

Price Code: 2A12 (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $25.98) English born pianist Harold Bauer originally hoped to make his career as violinist but his piano playing so impressed Paderewski that he subsequently focused on that instrument. He had huge success in the USA and as a result became a US citizen in 1917. Bauer was not a crowd-pleasing virtuoso firebrand but rather a true musician. There is always a wonderful poetry to his art and he excelled in miniatures, such as the Grieg presented here, though his legendary recording of the Brahms f minor sonata (still a benchmark) shows he had the requisite virtuosity when needed. These new transfers by Ward Marston are the only ones currently available of Bauer’s legacy.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Ivan Fischer writes of Mahler’s masterpiece, “There is a unique purity and transparency in Mahler’s 4th Symphony. The enchanting sleigh bells take us to his inner child, to his dreams of angels, fairy tales, angst and pure, divine love. This child-like symphony needed a different orchestra: no dark tuba, no heavy trombones, no large arsenal of massive brass. A chamber orchestra in fact, where the clarinets act as mock trumpets, the solo violin tunes his strings sharper in order to scare us and the lightness of the whole orchestra lifts us up to his lovely, childish vision of paradise.”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD The inspiration for this recording was derived from that all-too-rare occurrence: a perfect marriage of instrument and composer’s music. The language of Haydn’s later keyboard writing, with its kaleidoscopic range of expression, is perfectly matched by the gem of a piano used for this recording, dating from Vienna c.1785. It is an instrument capable of amazing breadth of touch and response. Haydn’s last and greatest keyboard works richly deserve being heard on such a piano, in order that the fullest range of expression and depth of imagination contained in these remarkable pieces may be brought alive.

Their second volume of Haydn quartets features Op.64 No.6, Op.77 No.1 and Op.20 No.4.

Ten years ago Angela Hewitt recorded a version of The WellTempered Clavier that dazzled the critical world and recordbuying public. Now, fresh from her Bach World Tour — in which she performed the complete WellTempered Clavier from August 2007 until the end of October 2008 in 58 cities in 21 countries on six continents — Angela has made an entirely new recording of this most iconic of keyboard works. In a revealing and personal program note, Angela explains her reasons, both artistic and emotional, for this momentous creative decision. She speaks of the ‘new-found freedom’ that she discovered in her later performances, and especially her use of Fazioli pianos, “whose luminous, powerful, and also ever so delicate sounds opened new worlds to me and allowed my imagination to take flight.”

“Among modern-day piano recordings of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Angela Hewitt’s has long held a favored place for its stylish perception, controlled virtuosity, intelligent application of dynamics, and warm, beautifully balanced sonics.” — CLASSICSTODAY.COM

Bawdy 17th-century musical theatre English Stage Jig

City Waites, Lucie Skeaping Hyperion • CDA 67754

Aa34571c!& %$?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Today we think of a jig as simply a dance, but in late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century England the word was used to describe a short musical farce featuring songs, dancing and slapstick comedy. They could be satirical, sentimental, libelous, riotous and often downright obscene. These jigs all appear here in their premiere recordings. This unusual and delightfully bawdy offering from Lucie Skeaping and The City Waites gives us a unique and tantalizing glimpse of theatrical history. An entertaining cameo from Catherine Bott is among the many uproarious performances.

His two cello sonatas are recorded here by Czech cellist Jirí Bárta and Romantic music specialist Hamish Milne on a thoroughly enjoyable new disc. The first sonata is a fairly substantial work that not surprisingly requires a pianist of heroic stature as well as a first-rate cellist. The second sonata is a larger, more ambitious work with a true scherzo and slow movement as well as sonata-form first movement and finale.

Howard Shelley’s series of Clementi’s piano sonatas has received great critical acclaim and is increasing interest in this under-recorded composer. The sonatas in the present volume date from the period just after Clementi’s adventures in Europe of 1780-83 that included an unfortunate and well-known confrontation with Mozart. Clementi moved back to London and there had a considerable reputation as a performer, composer and teacher. His playing was praised, among other things, for its ‘novel freedoms in tempo and dynamics in the service of heightened expression’ and those qualities are noticeable in the works recorded here.

Concert review

“Gergiev caught the crucial moment of expectation to perfection. But in the end it was the shattering power of several hundred voices, an expanded orchestra and full cathedral organ that delivered the mightiest of Mahler’s symphonies with the sonic splendour it demands.” — Evening Standard (UK)

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Mahler attempted something truly novel in his eighth symphony that affected both its content and its overall structure. He attempted boldly to unify the entire work through the expression of a personal philosophical ideal — in this case the redemptive power of human love. Mahler didn’t much care for the moniker “Symphony of a Thousand.” He called it a “Barnum & Bailey” nickname, a gimmick created by an agent who booked the piece’s 1910 premiere in Munich. The first part of the symphony is built around a Latin hymn from the fourth century, “Veni, Creator Spiritus” (“Come, spirit of creation”). Part two retells the final episode of Goethe’s “Faust,” in which the title character finds salvation. This fiery new reading by Valery Gergiev was recorded in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.

His film provides an intimate look at Glass as a family man, delves into his spiritual life and produces some insights on how he composes music. Orange Mountain Music’s soundtrack to Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts contains much of the music from the film including a wide variety of music from every part of Philip Glass’s career. Included on this collection are selections from Einstein on the Beach, Etoile Polaire, Glass’ music for solo piano and more.

“Glass, at his best, is second to none.” — ROLLING STONE

MARTINŮ Piano Quintets Nos.1 & 2, Piano Quartet

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Chamber music, from duos to ensembles of up to nine instruments, occupies a significant place in the vast output of Bohuslav Martinů. There are few chamber formations whose possibilities he did not try out. Martinů’s piano quintets and piano quartet, instrumental formations that were favorites of 19th-century composers, incorporate his decidedly post-Romantic sensibility with striking and idiomatic writing. Surprisingly, until now, these three works have never been combined on a single disc.

File in: World / Middle East DuOud consists of two oud-playing Istanbul-based musicians; Tunisian born Jean-Pierre Smadja (already noted for two albums he issued as Smadj on MELT 2000), and Algerian born master oud player Mehdi Haddab (known for his work with the acclaimed French based trio, Evoko, and more recently Speed Caravan). Blending their North African heritage with the latest Western technology, the pair builds a musical cycle that looks to their African roots while absorbing and morphing contemporary music styles - break beats, jazz grooves and metal guitar. While DuOud are not the first to mix the North African lute with electronic technology, they do it with such an imaginative freedom that sets them apart from their contemporaries; their debut album Wild Serenade saw them nominated for the Best Newcomer award in the 2003 BBC Music Awards. On Ping Kong, DuOud hovers between tradition and futurism, with varying moods ranging from surf kitsch to contemporary groove. The album features cameos from Cyril Atef from Bumcello and Malouma.

“When it’s in the hands of masters like Smadj and Mehdi Haddab, they can make [the oud] sound like a lone voice in the desert, or like the central figure in a swirling studio mix. . . The Congo meets Algiers meets Delhi meets Paris: don’t try to pin anything down, just let their heady momentum carry you along.” — AMAZON.COM

File in: World / Africa / Tanzania Culture Musical Club began life as part of the youth organization of the Afro Shirazi Party during Zanzibar’s struggle for independence back in 1956. Today, Culture Musical Club is not only the largest, but also one of the most prolific and successful orchestras of Zanzibar as they present taarab music. In addition to innumerable performances in Stone Town, villages of Zanzibar and on Tanzania mainland, this group has toured internationally with outstanding success and has won over audiences in France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, the Arab Emirates and Reunion. They perform new compositions on a regular basis and have developed a distinct and uniquely Swahili style. Their CD releases have made the name Culture Musical Club known to audiences throughout the world, so much so that rehearsals in their clubhouse have become somewhat of a tourist attraction. This, however, does not interfere with the first and foremost aim of their social gathering — namely to enjoy music and “to be moved” by it, as the original meaning of the word “taarab” implies.

“Culture Music Club is one of the best kept secrets in African music, but their music is so appealing that to keep them a secret any longer seems just short of criminal.” — AFROPOP WORLDWIDE 23

Jazz master from South Africa Hope

April 2009

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo File in: World / Jazz A longtime audiophile demonstration disc. Hope will show off your system’s dynamic range as well as any record ever released. Hugh Masekela, the outstanding South African trumpeter, assembled a sevenpiece group and recorded this great set live at Washington, D.C.’s Blues Alley. The songs stretch over a period of nearly five decades and serve as an informal guided tour of Masekela’s life. The songs are honest and bare, and as for the sound — wow!

“Hope is one of those intensely visceral, large as life, and immediately present recordings that will make pretty much any system sound at least very good, and will cause better ones to raise goose bumps.” — The Absolute Sound

JAZZ

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo File in: Jazz Blue Train is John Coltrane’s most important and best selling album after A Love Supreme. This was the first fully realized masterpiece by Coltrane. The superbly executed and blended ensembles have a haunting quality and each solo is a memorable treasure. It is considered Coltrane’s first solo album, as it is the first he recorded featuring musicians and songs entirely of his choosing. All of the compositions were written by Coltrane.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo File in: Jazz This album is unique within Lee Morgan’s vast and rich Blue Note discography. With then current employer Art Blakey, band mate Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, the trumpeter abandons time constraints and stretches out on four, soulful, hard-bop compositions (the first and the last are by Cal Massey). These hard bop masters are constantly inspired by Blakey’s explosive grooves.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo File in: Jazz This is pure and exceptional hard bop by Jackie McLean. Featuring Blue Mitchell, Walter Bishop, Jr., Paul Chambers and Art Taylor, Capuchin Swing has all the wonderful elements of any classic Blue Note album: memorable compositions, strong solos and great feeling. But the album also finds the great alto saxophonist looking toward new frontiers with tracks like the harmonically edgy “Francisco.”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo File in: Jazz Rightfully considered one of Kenny Dorham’s best, this album features great originals and superb trumpet playing. The outstanding cast on Whistle Stop consists of Hank Mobley, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The title tune and “Philly Twist” are often heard, but the entire album represents a great composing achievement for Dorham.

“Tigran Hamasyan approaches nearly every tune as an arc, beginning in contemplation and building to a crashing fury”

new label

File in: Jazz Pianist Tigran Hamasyan has already done much to launch his name into the world of emergent young jazz lions. He has toured throughout Europe, moving beyond his native Armenia to take prizes in jazz competitions from Moscow to Monaco. In 2006, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition. On Red Hail, the sequel to his first album, New Era (2007), Hamasyan debuts a brand new band, Aratta Rebirth. Consisting of five young L.A. musicians (all more or less the same age as Hamasyan), Arrata Rebirth explores, pummels and mixes with incredible talent the musical styles that have always inspired its leader and composer — rock (hard rock and even new metal), Armenian folk music, groove and of course, classic jazz.

ROCK

Rickie Lee Jones APO • CAPP 51056 SA

Hk5308 c!)%^ VL Price Code: A28 (Suggested Retail Price: $28.98)

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo File in: Rock / Folk Rickie Lee Jones is one of the most complex singersongwriters of our time. Her career, which spans nearly three decades, has been full of unique musical expression. Jones’ style has crossed many genres including folk, rock, jazz, soul, spoken word and pop. Her voice echoes that of a 40’s jazz era performer, and has been an influence to many of today’s performers including Sheryl Crow and Tori Amos. Not since Billie Holiday has there been a vocalist who so completely transforms a song into her own. On It’s Like This, Jones envelops standards, showtunes, ‘70s soul, and even slick jazzrock, interpreting them with her familiar childlike, breathy shouts. Produced by Bruce Brody (who has also worked with Maria McKee and Bette Midler), this album is really a showcase for the dynamic vocalist. Several notable artists scatter themselves unobtrusively throughout the album. Joe Jackson, Ben Folds, John Pizzarelli, and Taj Mahal each lend a subtle bass line or harmony vocal, cautiously not stepping on any of Jones’ delicate lines.

“A rare treat, with Jones’ stripped-back, largely acoustic band brilliantly framing that voice...”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo File in: Rock Known for his slide guitar work, his interest in the American roots music, and, more recently, for his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries, Ry Cooder is ranked number 8 on Rolling Stone’s “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” Here, Cooder teams with North Indian musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt to create an exquisite musical realm, with both musicians playing exceptional slide guitar. Their collaboration evokes musical elements from many cultures and styles. Percussion is provided by Sukhvindar Singh on tabla and Cooder’s 14-year-old son Joachim on dumbek. This recording won a grammy ® Award in 1993.
